  1. Sponge away the dross and ephemera of my life and you're left with a series of moments in which I wonder: is now the right time to get into Legend of Heroes? I've been planning to play Nihon Falcom's 17-part RPG series ever since a respected peer gently suggested that my enthusiasm for Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest marked me out as a Basic ******, and that if I ever want to experience a real role-playing game, I should give LoH a go. 5. Get ready, Guardian — Bungie just unveiled what's coming up in its sci-fi shooter, Destiny 2, including two new expansions and major seasonal and core game updates coming to both paying and free players, all badged under the "Year of Prophecy." Year of Prophecy is the first year to boast four "major content beats," with two paid expansions and two major updates. The former is paid content while the latter will be available to all players. First up is Rite of the Nine, a "fresh take on dungeon diving for both seasoned dungeon crawlers and those stepping into the depths for the first time" that is already available to all players for no additional cost. While the dungeons themselves — Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep — will be familiar to some, even the most hardened Guardian can expect "unique twists" in which you'll reconnect with Orin and refreshed dungeon weapons. Then, on July 15, we'll get the brand-new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, a "multiyear saga that will unfold across multiple expansions." A paid-for expansion, The Edge of Fate will reintroduce us to the Nine, powerful and mysterious beings who existed long before the Traveler, as two characters "step into the spotlight" — new ally Lodi and Warlock Vanguard, Ikora. The expansion will take place on new destination Kepler, described as "inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2’s dungeons and destination design which encourages deep exploration, mystery, and player-driven discovery." Expect new enemies, weapons, gear, and "destination-specific abilities." At the same time, on July 15, "major core game innovations" will roll out, including revised armor and gear systems "to create richer opportunities for buildcrafting" and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. "Players will be able to easily choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the newly introduced Solo Ops," Bungie explained. "Fireteam Ops and Pinnacle Ops reinforce quick fireteam action and longer-form cooperative content, while the new Solo Ops activities are specifically designed for solo players who want short, self-contained gameplay sessions without the need for a fireteam. "Additionally, players can tailor activities to match their desired gameplay and the specific rewards they are chasing. 50 all-new modifiers will allow deeper gameplay customization and offer greater challenges for players, while curated activity rotations will ensure there is always something new to chase." As typically happens with a new expansion, pre-order sweeteners are available, including an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. From September 9, a second major update will go live — Ash & Iron — with the second expansion of the year, Renegades, going live on December 2. Finally, March 3 sees the Shadow & Order major update roll out. Destiny 2: Renegades, the second expansion in the Year of Prophecy, is inspired by the "legendary Star Wars universe" and "merges Destiny’s distinctive storytelling and gameplay with themes and elements drawn from the iconic sci-fi franchise." All this will be welcome news to many Destiny 2 players after Bungie laid off 220 staff — that's 17% of its entire workforce — in July 2024, less than a year after 100 other layoffs at Bungie. Of course, Destiny 2 isn't the only game keeping Bungie busy right now. Marathon was revealed in May 2023 as a reboot of the classic Bungie franchise, but it was only in the last month that we got our first real look at it. In IGN's Marathon hands-on preview, we wrote: "After playing enough Marathon to get a pretty good feel for it in its alpha state, I’m already fairly confident it’ll scratch the Bungie PvP itch that’s been left unscratched for a number of years now. Here’s hoping they’ll knock it out of the park when it comes to PC and consoles in September." Vikki Blake is a reporter, critic, columnist, and consultant. One of the programmers behind the very first Grand Theft Auto has praised Rockstar for delaying GTA 6's initial release to May next year, observing (not in so many words) that the developers could have rushed out an early release consisting of a city's worth of T-posing NPCs and whitebox freeways, and people would still have paid top dollar for the game. 12. Amid all the excitement for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has issued a surprise patch for Starfield, adding ‘Very Low’ display settings to improve performance, additional support for Creations (mods), as well as fixes for quests, vehicles, the user interface, and the Shattered Space DLC. The update is currently in Steam beta, which PC players can opt into. In a post on its website, Bethesda called for feedback, and published patch notes, below. This update does little more than add a few new features and make bug fixes, which means Starfield players are still waiting for news on potential DLC. Space-set RPG Starfield launched in September 2023 as Bethesda’s first brand new IP in 25 years. But it was not as well received as the studio’s previous games in the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises, and the Shattered Space expansion, released a year later in September 2024, has a ‘mostly negative’ user review rating on Steam. Despite reaching 15 million players, some wondered whether Bethesda might walk away from Starfield to focus on its other franchises. Bethesda itself has said it has "exciting things" planned for Starfield this year, amid growing discontent from players about a lack of communication and updates. In June 2024, Bethesda insisted it remained committed to supporting Starfield, and confirmed at least one other story expansion would release following Shattered Space. In an interview with YouTube channel MrMattyPlays, Bethesda Game Studios’ Todd Howard said the developer was aiming to release an annual story expansion for “hopefully a very long time.” In March, speculation that Starfield would soon be confirmed for release on PlayStation 5 ramped up after fans spotted a PlayStation logo on Bethesda’s official Creations website. The logo was attached to a work-in-progress ship decals Creation for Starfield, and although the Creation was removed, fans were left wondering whether Bethesda’s so-far PC and Xbox-only sci-fi game would soon make the jump to PS5. While it’s easy to forget about Starfield given all the attention on Oblivion Remastered, its players are hoping that Microsoft and Bethesda go big on Starfield at its Xbox Games Showcase broadcast on June 8. Could it announce the PS5 version and a new expansion at the same time? Could it shadow-drop both, following Oblivion Remastered’s lead? Fans only have a handful of weeks to find out. 13. Hazelight's fan-favorite co-op adventure, Split Fiction, has sold almost four million copies. Publisher EA confirmed the milestone in its latest financial results, calling the game a "hugely successful launch" and name-checking it as one of the reasons the publisher ended the 2025 financial year with a "strong finish." "4 MILLION SOLD!!!!" developer Hazelight exclaimed on social media in response to the news. "So many of you have picked up Split Fiction already, it’s amazing… "Seeing the fun you have with our game and the love you show for Mio, Zoe and each other warms our hearts here at Hazelight. And so many hot dogs made… " Split Fiction pulls you into the many worlds of two fiction writers in a boundary-pushing co-op adventure that allows two people to play even if only one owns the game. It only launched in March, but is yet another hit for Hazelight and designer Josef Fares, selling over 2 million copies in just a week. It's also down as a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title as Hazelight gets going on its next game. A movie based on Hazelight’s game is also in the works, with Story Kitchen, the video game adaptation specialist behind the Sonic films, said to be assembling writers, a director, and the cast, which will include Sydney Sweeney. We said Split Fiction was "an expertly crafted and absorbing co-op adventure that pinballs from one genre extreme to another", writing in the IGN Split Fiction review that it was "a rollercoaster of gameplay ideas and styles that are usually discarded as quickly as they’re introduced. This keeps it fabulously fresh for its full, 14-hour duration." Vikki Blake is a reporter, critic, columnist, and consultant. Kicking things off is Berserk - Kentaro Miura's dark fantasy manga about a large man swinging a large sword at demons, full of panels that are very good at conveying thrilling duels with a bunch of slash marks and captions that say 'snick' a lot. 19. Kuro Games has finally confirmed that Cartethyia will become a playable character in Wuthering Waves via drip marketing. She is a 5-star character and will be released in the upcoming version 2.4 update. Unfortunately, the developers did not share any details about Cartethyia’s Attribute and weapon type. That said, we do have an idea, thanks to all the recent leaks. Cartethyia will release in WuWa 2.4 Kuro Games finally drip-marketed Cartethyia, also known as Fleurdelys, on Wuthering Waves’ official social media accounts, confirming that the Blessed Maiden will be released in version 2.4. Furthermore, the post reveals that she is a 5-star unit, which shouldn’t be surprising considering her role in the story. The drip marketing post also reads: "The powers of the Sentinel and Threnodian clash and unite within her, propelling her into an uncertain future. Whether the future is bright or dim, she will hold the blade firmly and confront all that comes her way." [Hidden Content] Cartethyia’s splash art also shows her adult self (Fleurdelys), so we can look forward to playing her in both forms in Wuwa. That said, it is unclear if the second form will be locked behind Resonance Liberation or if she can transform by charging her Forte and using the Skill. Given Cartethyia’s connections with the Sentinel Imperator, the Threnodian Leviathan, and the Dark Tide, it is safe to say she will be one of the strongest characters in the game, similar to Jinhsi from Huanglong. Expected Attribute and weapon Kuro Games has not announced Fleurdelys’ Attribute and weapon type. However, based on the recent leaks, it is speculated that she could be an Aero unit. Furthermore, Cartethyia is seen using a Sword in the game, so it will likely be her weapon of choice. Luckily, the developers usually reveal the element and weapon type soon after the character drip marketing, so you won’t have to wait long for official confirmation. Since Cartethyia is the first character to be revealed for the Wuthering Waves 2.4 update, she will likely be in the first phase. Thus, you can expect her banner to be released on or around June 12. 21. In the latest video in Nintendo’s Creator’s Voice series, Final Fantasy Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be getting a Switch 2 release. Intergrade is the expanded PS5 version of the 2020 PS4 release Final Fantasy VII Remake, the first chapter in the remake trilogy that greatly expands upon the classic 1997 PS1 RPG Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade made some improvements to the PS4 version’s graphics and lighting, and also included Remake’s Intermission DLC, which centers on plucky ninja Yuffie’s arrival in Midgar. Final Fantasy VII Remake Integrade is currently available on PS5 and PC. However, Hamaguchi revealed that with the Switch 2’s improvements over its predecessor, it will be possible to bring the game to Nintendo's handheld platform. “With the power of the Switch 2, we can now recreate Midgar with full specs,” he stated. “Being able to play this game on the Switch 2 in handheld mode means you can play it on the train while commuting to work,” Hamaguchi added, saying that the portability will also make it easier for people to directly discuss and show others the game and their progress. The Switch 2 version will also incorporate GameChat, enabling players to talk to friends while playing and share their screens in real time. “I’m very excited to see this game playable on a portable system,” Hamaguchi enthused, adding that “I have high hopes that we can build a strong partnership between Nintendo and the Final Fantasy brand.” Although only Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade has been confirmed for Switch 2 so far, Hamaguchi ended with, “I hope players are looking forward to the Final Fantasy VII Remake series on Switch 2,” suggesting that Rebirth and the upcoming final entry in the trilogy will also see Switch 2 releases in the future. Of course, the Final Fantasy series originally started out on Nintendo consoles, before switching to the PlayStation 1 and its CD-ROM format for Final Fantasy VII, the first 3D entry, in 1997. With the remake, it seems that FFVII will finally be available on Nintendo hardware. 24. The Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device in Genshin Impact is a world boss located in Natlan. While it is easily visible on the map, getting to its location for the first time can be confusing, since it is on a small island at the corner of Natlan. This guide will help you reach the Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device boss and give you a small tip to beat it. Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device boss location and how to reach Screenshot by Destructoid The Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device boss is on the small island southwest of the Atocpan region in Natlan. Unfortunately, there's no land connecting it to the mainland of Natlan, so getting here for the first time may be tricky. If you have Furina, you can use her Elemental Skill to walk on water and get to the island. Screenshot by Destructoid For those without Furina, teleport to the waypoint southwest of the Children of Echoes and head straight towards the shore to find a couple of Koholasaurus near the Secret Source Dragon Idol. Indwell the Saurian and swim to the boss's island. You will also find a lot of Phlogiston Particles on the way, so you can use the Aquadash skill to get there faster. Once there, unlock the teleport waypoint for fast travel next time. Tips to beat the boss You can use brute force to beat the Secret Source Automaton Overseer Device boss in Genshin Impact. However, during the battle, it may enter the Sweeper Mode, during which it will start using hydro pump attacks, and these attacks also get stronger as time passes. Furthermore, the boss's elemental resistance significantly increases in this state. Screenshot by Destructoid The only way to stop the boss is to use Cryo attacks, so it's best to use a proper Cryo team or at least bring one Cryo unit that can perform fast Cryo attacks, such as Ayaka or Wriothesley.
