All in the mind? The surprising truth about brain rot | Health & wellbeing
All in the mind? The surprising truth about brain rot | Health & wellbeing
Andrew Przybylski, a professor of human behaviour and technology at Oxford University, is a busy man. It’s only midday and already he has attended meetings on “Skype, Teams, in person and now FaceTime audio”. He appears to be switching seamlessly between these platforms, showing no signs of mental impairment. “The erosion of my brain is a function of time and small children,” he says. “I do not believe there’s a force in technology that is more deleterious than the beauty of life.”
Przybylski should know: he studies technology’s effects on cognition and wellbeing. And yet a steady stream of books, podcasts, articles and studies would have you think that digital life is lobotomising us all to the extent that, in December, Oxford University Press announced that its word of the year was “brain rot” (technically two words, but we won’t quibble) – a metaphor for trivial or unchallenging online material and the effect of scrolling through it. All this has sown widespread fears that the online world that we – and our children – have little choice but to inhabit is altering the structures of our brains, sapping our ability to focus or remember things, and lowering our IQs. Which is a disaster because another thing that can significantly impair cognitive function is worry.
It may come as some relief to hear, then, that for every alarmist headline there are plenty of neuroscientists, psychologists and philosophers who believe this moral panic is unfounded. “Since 2017, there has been a constant drumbeat of: ‘Screens and tech and social media are a different universe that is bad for you and bad for your kid,’” says Przybylski. “And two things happen. The first is low-quality research that confirms our biases about technology. It gets immediate press because it’s consistent with our existing biases. It’s really easy to publish low-quality research that kind of shows a correlation, and then exaggerate it, because it’ll get attention and it’ll get funding.”
No one is denying that dangers lurk online, but that doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to come to harm. “Living is risky, leaving the house is risky, crossing the street is risky,” says Przybylski. “These are all things that we have to help young people learn to do – to size up risks and act anyway. The internet is risky.”
It seems like common sense that mental health has gone down as tech use has gone up. But it just isn’t scientific
There has also been, he says, “a real push in opinion pieces and popular-press books that are sloppy scientifically but stated so confidently. The ideas in these books are not peer-reviewed.” The published studies they cite tend to have small samples and no control groups, and to be based on associations rather than proving cause. “People will say: ‘The iPhone was invented in 2007 and Instagram became popular in 2012 and, oh my God, look, tech use has gone up at the same time mental health has gone down!’ It seems like common sense – that’s why you have this kind of consensus. But it just isn’t scientific.”
In 2023, Przybylski and his colleagues looked at data from almost 12,000 children in the US aged between nine and 12 and found no impact from screen time on functional connectivity (“how different parts of the brain kind of talk to each other”, he explains), as measured with fMRI scans while the children completed tasks. They also found no negative impact on the children’s self-reported wellbeing. “If you publish a study like we do, where we cross our Ts, we dot our Is, we state our hypotheses before we see the data, we share the data and the code, those types of studies don’t show the negative effects that we expect to see.”
‘Young people with access to phones say they’re happier across a wide range of metrics of wellbeing.’ Photograph: Steven Robinson Pictures/Getty Images
And of course no one talks about the positive effects of tech, such as finding connection and community. “If we zoom out, we find that if young people have access to phones that can connect with the internet, if they have high-speed internet at home, their wellbeing is higher. They say they’re happier across a wide range of metrics of wellbeing.
“When the Lancet commission on self-harm does an evidence review, when the National Academy of Sciences in the US does an evidence review, when academic researchers do their meta scientific research, these things don’t come out in line with this tech panic,” he says. “That’s because this tech panic is not based on evidence. It’s based on vibes.”
The “study” that spearheaded this cascade of concern in 2005, and is still quoted in the press today, claimed that using email lowered IQ more than cannabis. But Shane O’Mara, a professor of experimental brain research at Trinity College Dublin, smelled a rat when he couldn’t find the original paper. It turns out there never was one – it was just a press release. That finding was the result of one day’s consultancy that a psychologist did for Hewlett Packard. He would later state that the exaggerated presentation of this work became the bane of his life.
Alongside a survey on email usage, the psychologist conducted a one-day lab experiment in which eight subjects were shown to have reduced problem-solving abilities when email alerts appeared on their screens and their phones were ringing. He later wrote: “This is a temporary distraction effect – not a permanent loss of IQ. The equivalences with smoking pot and losing sleep were made by others, against my counsel.”
The studies finding changes to brain structure sound particularly alarming, even if they are looking specifically at people with “problematic internet use”, as opposed to the general population. The trouble with these studies, says O’Mara, “is that they can’t determine cause and effect. It may be that you go on the internet [excessively] because you’ve got this thing there already. We simply don’t know, because nobody has done the kind of cause-and-effect studies that you need, because they’re too big and too difficult.”
Besides, brain structures change throughout life. Grey matter has been observed to decrease during pregnancy, for instance, and start regrowing after, along with other brain changes. “The brain is remarkably plastic,” agrees O’Mara.
He also thinks we’re being deeply ahistorical when we berate ourselves for scrolling cute animal reels, celebrity regimes or cup-winning goals on social media. “Humans have always been distractible. We’ve always sought solace in the evanescent. If you look at the history of media in the ***, just as a simple example, back in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, how many millions of tabloids were sold every day? Staggering numbers, because people indulged in that stuff. This is something people have always done, and we’re being a bit moralistic about it.” Has the internet age led to greater numbers of plane crashes or patients dying on operating tables? “The answer is no: we’re much better at all of those things.”
We’ve always had to watch out for our “attentional bottleneck”, he says. “For as long as I’ve been reading and researching in psychology, we’ve always taught our students: ‘Don’t do two things at once. You can’t.’” Multitasking and its associated dilution of efficacy were not invented by the internet. As Przybylski alluded to, having children is a classic route to task-juggling, with constant interruptions leading to intelligent adults not being able to string a sentence together. Similarly, if you use your smartphone while driving, of course you’ll increase the likelihood that you’ll ******.
Be smart about how you use your devices. Manage the devices – don’t let them manage you
What about the terrifying proclamations that tech is on the rise while IQ is in decline? I call Franck Ramus, the head of the cognitive development and pathology team at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris. Mercifully, he says it’s not yet clear if IQ is truly going down. Scores rose globally during the 20th century but growth started slowing towards the turn of the millennium. This plateau effect had long been expected, as we neared the limits of the human brain. “Height has been increasing over decades, but we’re never going to reach three metres, are we? So there are limits to human physiology, including brain size.”
Any small IQ decreases that do seem to have been detected, Ramus says, aren’t considered conclusive at this point – the studies would need further replication. “There’s a meta-analysis of all the data until 2013, and the score seems to be progressing at least until 2010 or so. At the same time, it is true that some studies have documented a slight decrease in some countries. For example, there is a widely discussed Norwegian study that found a slight decrease in the last two decades. But there are also a greater number of studies that continue to observe increases.”
‘Some apps and games may improve memory, multitasking skills, fluid intelligence and other cognitive abilities.’ Photograph: Alina Rudya/Bell Collective/Getty Images
As for screen exposure, he says, what do we even mean by that? “It could be anything. The screen is just a medium but what matters is content. So when you talk about screen, you might as well talk about paper. Paper is another medium, and anything can be written on paper.”
This brings us neatly to Plato, who wrote about brain rot in relation to the invention of writing, says Tony Chemero, a professor of philosophy and psychology at the University of Cincinnati, whose 2021 paper in Nature Human Behaviour asserted: “Technology may change cognition without necessarily harming it.” “This worry that people are having, Plato had as well, 2,500 years ago or so, writing about how the written word will make people stupid because their memories will be worse and they’ll be worse at telling stories.”
Chemero does not love smartphones or AI – and laments the hassle the latter has created for professors like him having to find new ways to check their students aren’t handing in ChatGPT-generated work. “But the one thing that they don’t do is make us stupid,” he says. “Over the history of hominids, many of our biggest challenges have involved adapting to new kinds of environments – and that’s being smart. This is just a new environment we’re in.” So while he can still remember the phone numbers of high-school classmates, younger people’s brains are simply freed up for other activities. “What we really want from technology is to do the things that are difficult and boring, such as lots of complex calculation, rote memorisation: humans just aren’t very good at that without technology.”
The relevant question, he says, is what is memory in this situation, when we’re outsourcing some of it to tech? “Is it something that your brain does or is it an ability that you have? If [technology helps you] remember more things while your brain does something different, I don’t think that your memory is worse. It’s just different. What really matters is what we are able to do.” After all, the secret to human success has always hinged on our use of tools. “Being smart is being able to do lots of stuff. And I don’t think our phones are making us less able to do many things.”
‘Go out for a walk. Get up and get moving. We just need to develop new ways of interacting with these media.’ Photograph: Stanislaw Pytel/Getty Images
Gary Small, the chair of psychiatry at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey, has studied potential harms and benefits of digital technology use. He too steers clear of studies based on mere associations. “To my knowledge,” he says, “there’s no compelling evidence that using digital technology or using devices is going to cause permanent brain damage.”
In terms of the negatives, he believes that certain platforms and content can be addictive. “It could be porn, shopping, gambling. This technology heightens human behaviour, puts it on steroids, accelerates all these issues.” He mentions a study two years ago for which he and colleagues sent a group of 13-year-olds off to nature camp, and assessed their emotional intelligence (reading emotions on faces) and social intelligence (describing a social interaction) before and after. “And we found that five days away from screen time led to significant improvements in both, and we had a control group on that.” This showed, he says, that the negative effects of phone use are temporary, and go away when we put our phones away.
And there are positives. “In our work, in our social lives, screens keep us connected. We can be much more efficient. We can get information much more rapidly. I can collaborate with people across the globe.” While the fatigue you can get from not taking breaks is real – “you can get physical symptoms, headache, neck pain, shoulder pain, mental fatigue, no question about it” – using the internet can be stimulating brain exercise in itself. “The study we did, for me at least, was cause for some optimism.” His team taught older people to search the internet while they were in an fMRI scanner and found that their neural activity increased.
The study also states: “Certain computer programs and video games may improve memory, multitasking skills, fluid intelligence and other cognitive abilities. Some apps and digital tools offer mental health interventions providing self-management, monitoring, skills training and other interventions that may improve mood and behaviour.”
So rather than hampering your cognitive (and possibly even parenting) abilities by fretting about brain rot, he says, “be smart about how you use your devices. Manage the devices – don’t let them manage you. I try to practise what I preach” – namely, by taking regular breaks and choosing appropriate modes of communication. “So many times I see these long email threads trying to deal with complex, nuanced issues. Best response is: ‘Call me or let’s meet.’”
Przybylski, meanwhile, doesn’t shield his young children from smartphones or games consoles. “It’s perfectly OK to have some time dedicated to leisure, and why not some screen activities,” he says. Content quality is a consideration, and, “like every activity, it should be only a reasonable amount of time. I think many of the negative effects that are attributed to screen exposure are not intrinsic to screen exposure. They just reflect the fact that time can be lost for other activities that would have positive effects.”
Likewise, O’Mara isn’t worried about spending most of his working day using a computer. “We just need to develop new ways of thinking about how we interact with these media. Go out for a walk. Get up and get moving. That’s very, very good for you, if you want to relieve a feeling of incipient anxiety caused by these things.” It’s all about balance and avoiding the temptation to multitask too much. O’Mara suggests making time for reading a book uninterrupted, or leaving your phone in another room while you’re watching TV. “Be intentional about your media choices,” he says.

Sony Group President Hiroki Totoki will add the CEO role from April 1, while incumbent Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida will remain as chairman, the entertainment and technology conglomerate said on Wednesday.
The moves cement the leadership position of Totoki, who assumed the president’s post in 2023 and has also served as finance chief of the company.
Sony, once famous for its consumer electronics such as the Walkman, is aiming to strengthen its position in entertainment, with Yoshida credited with helping to have engineered the shift.
Totoki already helms Sony’s earnings briefings and took the role of chairman of the key gaming unit behind the PlayStation 5 console as it took steps to improve margins.
“(Totoki) spearheaded growth strategies for the Sony Group, such as our investments in content IP and semiconductors, and is a leader capable of shaping our vision and strategy for future growth,” Yoshida said in a company statement.
Lin Tao will become the first woman to serve as chief financial officer, after serving as an executive at the games business, with Hideaki Nishino to become CEO of that unit after serving as head of the technology side of the business.

Dearborn Heights home invasion turned shootout caught on camera, three injured
The Brief
A home invasion turned into a shootout in Dearborn Heights.
The homeowner, his girlfriend, and the suspect were injured.
The suspect is facing several charges. Meanwhile, everyone is okay.
DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. (FOX 2) – A home invasion led to a shootout in Dearborn Heights over the weekend, injuring the homeowner and the suspect.
What we know
The horrifying moment was caught on camera as Benjamin Nevers got into a shootout with a man who broke into his home on North Brookside.
“My foot completely shattered,” he said. “They have screws and plates, immediate surgery, and then I got hit in the back right here as well.”
Benjamin said his girlfriend, who was lying in the bed behind him during the incident, was also shot.
“I know she got shot in the back, and it like traveled up and it like hit her kidney and I think it’s lodged in her chest right now – like they can’t get the bullet out cause it’s too dangerous. So, I know they are watching her and it’s going to be a couple more days,” he said.
He said he and a friend had just got back from the Bahamas and were looking for a quiet night when two suspects appeared on security video breaking in through a kitchen window and milling around the house.
His friend was held down at gunpoint in the living room.
“Then I woke up, and I was just quick enough to react to grab my gun and ***** it and I just sat there and kind of waited. I knew they were going to come to my room,” he said.
As soon as the gunman came in, the shootout began. On video, Ben shoots his gun at the off-screen suspect as he is also shot.
Later, an outside camera caught the injured suspect struggling to leave the house.
Police arrested the suspected shooter and investigators identified him as Phillip Price, who now faces charges of assault with intent to *******, armed robbery and other charges as part of a 21-count indictment.
“The bag that they tried to get was right there and there was a bottle of Don Julio in it and a chocolate bar and then there was a studio microphone that I have like these guys did this for nothing,” Ben said. “I’m just happy everybody is alive and well. I’m kind of glad the guy who shot me is still alive too. I don’t want to kill nobody.”
Benjamin Nevers launched this GoFundMe page to help support his girlfriend’s recovery from her gunshot wound.

XL bully dog ban a ‘huge burden’ on policing, chiefs say
XL bully dog ban a ‘huge burden’ on policing, chiefs say
Police enforcement of the ban on owning XL bully dogs is placing a “huge burden” on forces, police chiefs have said.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said they are facing a “number of challenges in kennel capacity, resourcing and ever-mounting costs”.
The NPCC lead for dangerous dogs, Chief Constable Mark Hobrough, said kennelling costs and veterinary bills in England and Wales had risen from £4m in 2018 to more than £11m between February and September 2024 – during the first eight months of the ban.
He added that by April this year, forces predict they could have spent £25m, a rise of 500%.
The ban was introduced in England and Wales on 1 February 2024 following a number of attacks involving the dogs. Similar restrictions were also introduced in Scotland, while in Northern Ireland, XL bullies now have to be muzzled and kept on a lead in public.
It is a criminal offence to own an XL bully dog where they are banned without an exemption certificate, meaning unregistered pets will be taken and owners possibly fined and prosecuted.
“Policing will uphold the government’s decisions, and we’ll act robustly to do so, but the ******* picture is a focus on responsible dog ownership,” Mr Hobrough said.
He said that while the force’s response to the ban has “driven down” the number of dog attacks, “the demand has been and continues to be simply huge”.
“As of today we have not received any additional funding to account for this,” he added.
He said conversations were “ongoing” with the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs but there had been no formal agreement on funding “to account for these additional demand factors”.
Since the XL bully ban, police forces have increased their kennel capacity by a third. But the NPCC said kennel spaces were “reaching capacity”, with costs “increasing by the day”.
The policing body added that it can cost around £1,000 a month to keep an XL bully in a kennel.
In total, between February and September 2024, police forces in England and Wales seized and euthanised 848 dogs at an estimated cost of £340,000, said the NPCC. It said these were dogs surrendered to the police by owners who had not complied with the ban, or not taken advantage of a compensation scheme.
In the same time *******, police seized a total of 4,586 dogs suspected of being banned, including XL bullies. So-called Section 1 dogs are banned in the *** under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, and also include the American pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, Dogo Argentinos, and Fila Brazileiro.
NPCC tactical lead Supt Patrick O’Hara said he did not think all XL bullies were automatically dangerous, but they had the “propensity” to be by their “sheer size and power”.

Brazil will not use its air force for U.S. migrant deportations
BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil will not use its air force planes to assist with the deportation of Brazilian migrants in the United States, the South American country’s top diplomat said on Tuesday, just days after a major flare up in neighboring Colombia over the issue.
On Sunday, Colombia and the United States pulled back from the brink of a trade war caused by a spat over deportation flights utilizing military aircraft including U.S. planes that transported shackled migrants.
A day later, Brazil summoned a senior U.S. diplomat to discuss the deportation of Brazilian migrants, after it condemned handcuffing of deportees on a flight to repatriate migrants from the United States.

‘Will see a specialist’: Campbell Graham suffers cruel injury setback, Latrell Mitchell cleared to make Souths return in round 1
The Rabbitohs are sweating on scan results after the club confirmed that the luckless Campbell Graham suffered a hand injury at training this week, but there is better news with Latrell Mitchell cleared by the NRL to play in their season opener.
Graham missed the entire 2024 season due to a sternum injury that required surgery, with the star centre hoping to finally return in round 1.
But those plans are now on hold with it unclear just how serious the injury is, with Graham to meet specialists this week.

“Rabbitohs centre Campbell Graham has sustained a hand injury at training this week,” the club confirmed in a statement.
“He has gone for scans on his hand and will see a specialist this week to determine a course of action for rehabilitation of the injury.
“The Rabbitohs will update members and supporters once more information is known.”
Graham won the George Piggins Medal in 2023 having scored a career-high 16 tries that year, and he spoke recently about how excited he was to be back after the Rabbitohs were ravaged by injuries last year.
“I never really had any doubts in terms of playing. It was more angst to get back out there,” he said late last year.
“The end of this rehab journey is over. I’m fully training and my focus is back on playing footy.”
There is some better news for the club with the NRL confirming that superstar fullback Latrell Mitchell will be available for round 1 after it decided that he could include the All Stars clash as part of his one-match ban.
Mitchell was suspended, fined and ordered to undergo education training for bringing the game into disrepute after a photo was released on social media showing him standing near a white substance in a hotel room in Dubbo last season.
The decision from head office means he’s free to face the Dolphins in round 1 on March 7 in a spicy clash between Wayne Bennett and his former side.
Mitchell has played in six All Stars matches, with the Souths fullback captaining the Indigenous side last year.
The NRL has also allowed Josh Addo-Carr to serve part of his four-game ban in the annual clash, with the Eels recruit set to make his club debut against his former side the Bulldogs in round 3.

Apple’s iPhones to support Starlink direct-to-cell coverage in US
Apple’s iPhones to support Starlink direct-to-cell coverage in US
(Reuters) – Apple’s iPhone devices are now eligible to test SpaceX-owned Starlink’s direct-to-cell capability that provides coverage from space, according to T-Mobile, a partner in the program.
T-Mobile and Elon Musk’s SpaceX are currently testing the Starlink cell network on a trial basis after receiving approval from the Federal Communications Commission in November last year.
The trial offers ‘text via satellite’, while voice and data features will be added in the future, according to the T-Mobile website.

T-Mobile initially only listed a few Android smartphones as eligible devices to test the network, but has now added iPhone devices with the latest iOS 18.3 software update.
Bloomberg News first reported on Tuesday that Apple, SpaceX and T-Mobile had been secretively working to add support for the network in its latest iPhone software.
Apple and SpaceX did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment outside regular business hours.
In October last year, the FCC had allowed SpaceX and T-Mobile to enable Starlink satellites with direct-to-cell capability to provide coverage for cellphones in areas of North Carolina hit hard by Hurricane Helene.

Nothing Tipped to Launch Three Smartphones Before Unveiling Flagship Phone 3 This Year
Nothing Tipped to Launch Three Smartphones Before Unveiling Flagship Phone 3 This Year
Nothing Phone 3 is reported to be in development as the company’s next flagship smartphone and the successor to the Phone 2. However, before it sees the light of day, the British original equipment manufacturer (OEM) could launch as many as three smartphones, according to claims by a tipster. The company is gearing up to introduce a new smartphone on March 4 which is speculated to be the purported Nothing Phone 3a and the tipster suggests that it could kick off the launch blitz.
Launch of Nothing Smartphones
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), tipster Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) claims that Nothing has three smartphones which are scheduled to launch ahead of the Nothing Phone 3. This includes a new phone which is confirmed to debut on March 4. Thus, people who were waiting for the flagship launch might have to “wait a little longer”.
People waiting for Nothing Phone 3 have to wait a little longer…
There are 3 devices planned ahead of it. The madness starts with Phone 3a..
— Yogesh Brar (@heyitsyogesh) January 28, 2025
While the company has only shared teasers without revealing the moniker, it could very well be the successor to the Nothing Phone 2a.
Meanwhile, two other smartphones are also said to be in line for debut. An internal email allegedly sent by CEO Carl Pei earlier this month references not only the Nothing Phone 3 in the company’s 2025 roadmap, but also a “landmark” launch. This indicates a new smartphone could become part of the company’s lineup this year.
Notably, Nothing Phone 2a was launched in March 2024 and was followed up by the Phone 2a Plus in August. The company could follow a similar trend with its successor that is slated to debut next week, possibly at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2025.
Nothing Phone 3a Leaks
Nothing’s upcoming launch event has the tagline “Power in Perspective”. The phone is teased to have a Glyph interface around the two camera rings, which are stacked vertically at the back. This not only suggests that the phone will come with the company’s signature design language, but also a redesigned rear camera setup.
Nothing has previously stated that it plans to offer breakthrough innovations in terms of the user interface. It is said to be the company’s first step towards offering an AI-powered platform.

Daniels double-double but Hawks lose sixth straight
Daniels double-double but Hawks lose sixth straight
Dyson Daniels’ typically-busy performance couldn’t prevent his Atlanta Hawks falling to a season-high sixth straight NBA loss as they were beaten 100-96 by the Houston Rockets.
*********** starter Daniels scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block in Tuesday night’s home game.
Trailing 96-80 with 5:41 remaining, the Hawks almost pulled off a big comeback, closing within two in the final minute before bench star De’Andre Hunter missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer with 12 seconds left.
The Hawks (22-25) have stumbled in recent games and sit ninth in the eastern conference after starting the season brightly and reaching the NBA Cup semi-finals.
They have not won since beating defending champions Boston 119-115 in overtime on the road on January 18.
The Rockets (32-14) conversely have now won 10 of 12 and moved 1 1/2 games ahead of Memphis for the No.2 seed in the Western Conference.
Jalen Green scored 25 points for the Rockets and Alperen Sengun added 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Trae Young had 21 points and nine assists for the Hawks while Hunter added 16 points.
The Hawks shot just 11 of 47 from 3-point range. After hitting three of their first seven 3-pointers, Atlanta went 8 of 40 the rest of the game.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Hawks as they now travel to Cleveland play the eastern conference leaders on Thursday.
In Philadelphia, last season’s Most Improved Player Tyrese Maxey scored 43 points as the 76ers overcame the injury absence of Joel Embiid and Paul George in a 118-104 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.
Maxey continued his recent hot scoring streak as he tries to keep the Sixers (18-27) within striking distance of the play-in tournament. He had averaged 30.4 points over the last 10 games.
LeBron James scored 31 points for the Lakers (26-19) but fellow superstar Anthony Davis left the Lakers without a key cog when he was forced out in the first half with an abdominal muscle strain.

Mississippi deer hunting: Hunter in MS takes huge 10-point buck
Mississippi deer hunting: Hunter in MS takes huge 10-point buck
When a hunter in Mississippi first saw a young buck during the 2021-22 deer season, he thought it had potential to become a trophy.
He was a 10-point and with time, the Hinds County buck became a 150-class giant.
“This was my No. 1 buck to get on this year,” said Dylan Cadby of Livingston, Louisiana. “I actually had a 3-year history with him. He was a 2 1/2-year-old, which are a dime a dozen.”
But deer like this one aren’t a dime a dozen. The buck’s antlers were nearly symmetrical and Cadby knew they’d only get ******* with time. He talked with hunters on adjoining properties and asked them to let the buck, which he named Baby Ten, walk for a few years to see what he might become and it paid off.
“This year he was 5 1/2 years old and he changed completely,” Cadby said. “This year he blew up.”
Dylan Cadby of Livingston, Louisiana harvested this huge buck while hunting in Hinds County, Mississippi.

Big Mississippi buck became hard to pattern
But the buck’s antlers weren’t the only thing that changed. His behavior did, too. In previous years, the buck would show up on camera regularly and would eat at feeders and food plots. This season he didn’t eat in food plots or visit feeders.
He would also disappear for periods of time. Cadby said the buck showed up on camera before archery season began in the fall and then Cadby had no photos or sightings of him for roughly a month.
“I thought somebody had killed him in that early velvet season,” Cadby said.
However, the buck was alive and well. Photos of him began coming from trail cameras, but they weren’t consistent until the end of November. All the while, Cadby was hunting and kept passing on other good bucks in the hope of getting the big 10-point.
“I was crazy for passing on these bucks, but I wanted him,” Cadby said. “I had my heart set on Baby Ten.”

Hunter passes on another big buck, second-guesses decision
Photos of the buck began coming from a wooded area with white oaks that were dropping acorns and on Dec. 10, Cadby was in a stand near them and got there early that afternoon.
“With those white oaks on the ground, they were feeding early,” Cadby said. “I got in the stand about 2 o’clock.”
And 30 minutes later, deer began moving into the area. After a while, a big mature buck came into view, but Cadby didn’t shoot.
“It was a deer that any other year, if I didn’t have a target buck, I would have taken,” Cadby said. “He was a good deer.
“He was knocking on 130 inches as an 8-point. When I saw him walk off I said, ‘Man, you’re crazy.’ I was second-guessing myself. I really was.”

Does lead big buck to hunter
Cadby didn’t have a lot of time to dwell on his decision. Fifteen minutes later, he saw two does coming to the area and they were looking behind them. Cadby figured a buck was following them and he was right. It was Baby Ten and he was 60 yards away.
“I was shocked, honestly,” Cadby said. “I didn’t expect to see him even though I was in a good spot. When I seen the horns, I got excited.”
To keep his nerves from getting the best of him, Cadby focused on the deer’s body rather than the huge antlers. Cadby made the shot and knew it was good.
“After I shot, I came to pieces,” Cadby said. “I called every hunting buddy I have and said, ‘Hey, I smoked a good one.'”
Buck was everything hunter expected
Cadby called a friend with a tracking dog. He knew he didn’t need a dog to recover the buck, but this dog was young and needed to get some experience under his collar. Cadby knew this would be an easy job for the dog.
The dog came and found the buck 30 yards away. It was everything Cadby expected.
The buck had a 17 1/2-inch inside spread with main beams measuring 21 3/4 inches and 22 inches. The longest tine is 11 inches. Cadby has not had the deer scored yet, but with the measurements taken along with the mass, he said it will be in the 150s.
“He has crazy mass,” Cadby said. “It’s between his G2s and G3s is where it’s crazy mass.”
And although Cadby said he’s thankful to have taken the buck, it came at a price.
“A lot of neighbors were hunting him,” Cadby said. “It stinks to see that chapter close, but I was tickled I was the one to be able to take him.”
