  2. Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to play fullback in 2025, Dolphins narrow captaincy search down to four players Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow to play fullback in 2025, Dolphins narrow captaincy search down to four players The Dolphins won’t make a call on their new captain until closer to the start of the season, but one major position has been locked in with new coach Kristian Woolf confirming Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow will play fullback in 2025. “The Hammer” carved up at left centre for the Maroons last year with a hat-trick in the State of Origin opener and then two tries in three games for Australia in the Pacific Championships, but he’ll return to fullback where he’s spent the majority of the past two seasons at club level. Tabuai-Fidow was shifted to centre for the final two games of the 2024 season as part of a major backline reshuffle, but Trai Fuller – the man who replaced him at the back – ruptured his ACL and will be unavailable for most of the year. Woolf said he chatted with the speedster late last year about the role and Tabuai-Fidow made it clear that he wanted the No.1 jersey. “The Hammer has been going really well. I’ve been really pleased with how he’s come back after Christmas,” Woolf told Mornings with Matt White on SEN. “The thing with Hammer is you always want to walk in in the morning and see him with a big smile on his face enjoying what he’s doing, and at the moment, that’s what I’m seeing. “The plan for him is that he’s going to play fullback. He’s our fullback, and I think that’s his best position for us. “I know he played centre at representative level, and that was probably because there were so many good players around at rep level, particularly at fullback. “He’s got that ability to play two positions and do them really well, but we’re very happy with what he brings as our fullback, and that’s where he’ll be playing.” While a key position in the Dolphins spine has been confirmed, Woolf says he’s yet to settle on who will replace Jesse Bromwich as skipper for the new season. Kodi Nikorima and Mark Nicholls filled in as captain at stages last year, with Woolf revealing one of those men is in the mix for the full-time role that will be decided after their pre-season matches. “That’s a good question because I haven’t come up with it just yet,” Woolf confessed. “That’ll be something we do before round one. There are a number of candidates. “We’ve got a really good leadership group over the last few years with guys like Kenny Bromwich, Felise Kaufusi, Mark Nicholls and Tom Gilbert who have all been a part of that and they’ve all developed really well. “Jesse Bromwich is a great role model for those guys so we’re pretty well off. That’ll be where our captaincy comes from, and I know that any one of those four guys would do a terrific job and would do the club and supporters really proud. “I want to get into our trials and see how our games go to see who our players want to follow when they’re on the field. I’ll make my decision after that.” Source link #Hamiso #TabuaiFidow #play #fullback #Dolphins #narrow #captaincy #search #players Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. ‘One of the best sites in the country’ ‘One of the best sites in the country’ A remote U.S. island hopes to develop a world-class energy facility that will help it deal with the hours of electricity outages during adverse weather. Eastport, Maine, is the United States’ easternmost city, and the island community is no stranger to losing connection to the mainland electricity supply during big storms. As reported by Inside Climate News, the island hopes to change this by becoming energy resilient — a move that has put it at the forefront of Maine’s renewable energy transition. The move was spearheaded by an Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project grant that was awarded in 2021. This grant funded work to develop energy generation and storage right there on the island. Now, an initiative driven by local people is looking to build a microgrid that runs off solar and tidal power. This could help the island cope with hours of outages and move islanders away from using diesel, which generates harmful and polluting emissions. Eastport already has solar power operating on the island, but the community of 1,300 residents hopes to supplement this by taking advantage of the strong currents that are found nearby. “This site off of Eastport is one of the best sites in the country for tidal power,” said Stuart Davies, the CEO of the Ocean Renewable Power Company, per Inside Climate News. These developments in Eastport align with the goal of ensuring the U.S. is powered by 100% renewable energy by 2035. Swapping to renewable energy is essential to cut pollution that comes from dirty energy sources such as coal, oil, and gas. Clean energy, produced by solar, wind, and tidal among other sources, is much better for the environment and public health, and is less expensive. Watch now: CEO reveals form of energy that has ‘polled across political lines’ for over a decade In addition to sourcing funding for its renewable energy goals, the Eastport community is also looking to increase the energy efficiency of its homes. The city’s energy committee has secured funding to help residents identify where their homes need improved insulation. Weatherizing your home is a surefire way to reduce heating and cooling costs, saving you money on utility bills while also cutting pollution. 5. Embattled England have ‘point to prove’ in Ashes finale Embattled England have ‘point to prove’ in Ashes finale Captain Heather Knight believes having a “point to prove” can help England return to their best and avoid becoming the first team in women’s Ashes history to be whitewashed. Down 12-0 after being swept by Australia in the ODIs and T20s, England can save some pride by winning the historic day-night Test at the MCG, starting on Thursday, to end the points-based multi-format series. Competitive in most matches on tour, England slumped to their lowest point on Saturday night when they were embarrassed by 72 runs in the third and final T20. After being bowled out for 90 in that match, a raw Knight said she was “gutted” and was “trying not to cry”. But four days on from the disaster in Adelaide, the 34-year-old said the team had shifted focus to the opportunity of playing in the first Test at the MCG since 1949. “Everyone’s really disappointed with how we’ve performed so far,” she said on Wednesday. “We feel like we haven’t played our best cricket at all as a side. “As a leader, you kind of feel responsible a little bit that things haven’t gone their best. “I’m probably someone that is at my best when I’ve got a bit of a point to prove and I certainly do have that this week.” Outspoken Australia batter Grace Harris taunted England after the last game, saying she wanted to “embarrass” them with a whitewash. Since the women’s Ashes shifted to multi-format in 2013, the biggest margin has been a 12-4 result three times (twice to Australia and once in favour of England). But Knight brushed aside Harris’ sledge, saying England didn’t need any extra motivation to bounce back. Veteran pacer Kate Cross bowled in the nets on Tuesday to try to prove her fitness but has been ruled out of returning for the match. 6. Rates drop ahead of Fed meeting Rates drop ahead of Fed meeting Most mortgage rates have decreased today. According to Zillow, the average 30-year fixed rate is down by seven basis points to 6.67%, and the 15-year fixed rate has dropped by six basis points to 5.97%. So, will mortgage rates continue to fall after the Federal Reserve’s announcement about federal funds rate movements tomorrow? It depends. First of all, experts aren’t forecasting a fed funds rate cut this week (or at the next few meetings), so mortgage rates wouldn’t decrease due to a lower Fed rate right now. But if Fed Chair Jerome Powell makes positive comments about the year’s outlook, home loan rates could react by ticking down. This embedded content is not available in your region. Dig deeper: How the Federal Reserve rate decision impacts mortgage rates Here are the current mortgage rates, according to our latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.67% 20-year fixed: 6.40% 15-year fixed: 5.97% 5/1 ARM: 6.65% 7/1 ARM: 6.58% 30-year VA: 6.10% 15-year VA: 5.52% 5/1 VA: 6.05% Remember that these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth. Read more: How to get the lowest mortgage rates possible Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form. These are the current mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.71% 20-year fixed: 6.53% 15-year fixed: 6.05% 5/1 ARM: 6.65% 7/1 ARM: 6.69% 30-year VA: 6.12% 15-year VA: 5.88% 5/1 VA: 6.02% 30-year FHA: 6.27% 15-year FHA: 6.13% Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Refinance rates are usually higher than purchase rates. This embedded content is not available in your region. A mortgage calculator can help you see how various mortgage term lengths and interest rates will affect your monthly payments. Use the free Yahoo Finance mortgage calculator to play around with different outcomes. Our calculator also considers factors like property taxes and homeowners insurance when calculating your estimated monthly mortgage payment. This gives you a better idea of your total monthly payment than if you just looked at mortgage principal and interest. As a rule of thumb, 15-year mortgage rates are lower than 30-year mortgage rates. When comparing 15- versus 30-year mortgage rates, know that the shorter term will save you money on interest in the long run. However, your monthly payments will be higher because you’re paying off the same loan amount in half the time. For example, with a $400,000 mortgage with a 30-year term and a 6.67% rate, you’ll make a monthly payment of about $2,573 toward your mortgage principal and interest. As interest accumulates over decades, you’ll end up paying $526,337 in interest. If you get a $400,000 15-year mortgage with a 5.97% rate, you’ll pay about $3,369 monthly toward your principal and interest. However, you’ll only pay $205,411 in interest over the years. If that 15-year mortgage monthly payment is too high, remember you can always make extra mortgage payments on your 30-year loan to pay off your mortgage faster and ultimately pay less interest. With a fixed-rate mortgage, your rate is locked in from day one. However, you will get a new rate if you refinance your mortgage. An adjustable-rate mortgage keeps your rate the same for a set ******* of time. Then the rate will go up or down depending on several factors, such as the economy and the maximum amount your rate can change according to your contract. For example, with a 7/1 ARM, your rate would be locked in for the first seven years, then change every year for the remainder of your term. Adjustable rates sometimes start lower than fixed rates, but once the initial rate-lock ******* ends, you risk your interest rate going up. ARM rates have also been starting higher than fixed rates recently, so they’re not as good of a deal as usual. Dig deeper: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage — Which should you choose? In 2024, mortgage rates trended downward from early August to the Sept. 18 Federal Reserve meeting, when the central bank announced a 50-basis-point slash to the federal funds rate. Since that announcement, mortgage rates have increased or held steady for the most part. The Fed decreased its rate again at its November and December meetings (by 25bps each time). The trajectory of future mortgage rates will largely depend on the Federal Reserve’s decision on whether or not to cut the federal funds rate at its 2025 meetings. The Fed will announce its January fed funds rate decision tomorrow. According to the CME FedWatch tool, it is all but guaranteed the fed funds rate will stay the same at the January meeting. This means rates probably won’t significantly drop in the next couple of months. Dig deeper: Understanding the Fed’s rate decisions — Do we want high or low interest rates? According to Zillow data, today’s 30-year fixed rate for both purchases and refinances is 6.67%. These are the national averages, so keep in mind the average in your state or city could be different. Your rate will also vary depending on your personal finances. Mortgage rates will probably gradually drop throughout 2025, but they’re unlikely to plummet anytime soon. Mortgage rates should go down in 2025, though probably not as drastically as previously expected. Depending on what happens with the economy, inflation, and the Fed, any decreases may be relatively small. 8. BYD considering simpler warranties for Australia BYD considering simpler warranties for Australia BYD has one of the more confusing warranty offerings in Australia, but that could soon change. The ******** auto brand backs its products with a six-year/150,000km vehicle warranty, an eight-year/160,000km high-voltage battery warranty and an eight-year/150,000km drive unit warranty, however, other components have shorter, varied periods – some as low as six months. When asked whether the BYD brand could move away from its current aftersales offering, BYD Asia-Pacific boss Liu Xueliang told CarExpert through a translator: “We would take that into our consideration.” “That is already under consideration right now.” Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. In 2022, BYD’s local distributor EVDirect adjusted its capped-price servicing scheme after early criticism of its cost, but defended its warranty, arguing it was being transparent in outlining the differing periods. 9. Walking This Much Every Day Could Add Up To 10 Years To Your Life, Longevity Docs Say Walking This Much Every Day Could Add Up To 10 Years To Your Life, Longevity Docs Say “Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.” You might think that in order to live longer and healthier you have to spend a lot of time and money on high-tech treatments and supplements with funny names. (Look no further than entrepreneur Bryan Johnson who estimates that he spends $2 million dollars a year on biohacking pursuits that include blood plasma transfusions and upwards of 100 supplements daily.) But, according to the experts who study it, longevity can come a lot simpler—and cheaper—than you might expect. “There’s a lot of evidence in animal models and humans that lifestyle interventions—we’re not even talking about drugs—can have a dramatic effect on how long you’re going to live,” says Eric Verdin, MD, the president and CEO of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging. So, while the longevity and anti-aging market is projected to grow from $63 billion in 2023 to $183 billion in 2028, per Grand View Research, it turns out that the nonnegotiables for aging well are, well, basically free. Some more good news? No matter where you’re starting from, you can make a difference for your future self. “The earlier you start, the more of a leg up you have,” Dr. Verdin says. “But, it’s never too late.” Here’s what you can get started with today. Meet the experts: Eric Verdin, MD, is the president and CEO of The Buck Institute, a leading biomedical research organization on aging. Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD, is the scientific director of the National Institute on Aging, which is part of the National Institutes of Health. Deborah Kado, MD, is a geriatrician and co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center. What does longevity mean, anyway? When thinking about longevity, you might be thinking about adding years to your life, but for experts who study aging, it’s equally as important to prioritize the quality of those years too. Unfortunately, with age comes an increased risk for illnesses like ******* and dementia, mobility challenges, and a whole host of problems that might interfere with your day-to-day. “We need to distinguish between longevity in terms of how long you want to live and healthy longevity, which is living longer, but also maintaining great vitality, physical, and cognitive function,” says Luigi Ferrucci, MD, PhD, the scientific director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Aging. “I think that our attention should really be on the second one.” That’s why docs are more concerned with “healthspan”—a.k.a., the amount of years you can spend not just living but in good health—and why all of these tips not only promote a longer lifespan, but a healthier one, too. Here’s what scientists *know* can increase your healthspan.1. Go on a walk for 30 minutes every day. Getting active makes a huge difference when it comes to longevity. Even walking 30 minutes per day can reduce your risk of heart attack, stroke, Alzheimer’s, *******, Parkinson’s, and neurodegeneration, and potentially increase your lifespan by seven to 10 years, says Dr. Verdin. “The most powerful anti-aging drug that we have today is physical activity,” he says. The CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate to high intensity and two days of strength training per week for a reason. Not only does exercise target the hallmarks of aging, but it also boosts your circulatory and metabolic system, improves insulin resistance, and helps keep you agile and independent. As for what your physical activity should look like: Ideally, your fitness routine includes aerobic activity, like walking, running, or swimming, strength training—which is especially important for women to maintain bone density—and flexibility and mobility work, according to Dr. Ferrucci. Exercise was able to add a little over five years to individuals in a 2024 study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Work out like a longevity expert: Dr. Ferrucci does 15 minutes of strength training per day, Pilates two times per week, and goes on a run two to three times per week. 2. Stay on top of your doctor’s visits. Going to the appropriate doctors for annual check ups is super important if you want to live longer and healthier, says Dr. Ferrucci. This includes any recommended screenings for your age, staying on top of your blood pressure and cholesterol, and getting to the dentist. “It’s becoming clear that [poor] oral health is one of the most important sources of inflammation, and inflammation has a really strong negative effect on different organs’ health,” he says. (It’s true: Inflammation is the precursor of most modern chronic diseases, per previous WH reporting.) Your annual visits are the first step when it comes to preventative medicine. Having an annual exam led to a 45 percent reduced risk of all-cause mortality in healthy adults according to a 2022 meta-analysis of observational studies in Preventative Medicine. 3. Spend as much time as you can socializing. Everyone has a different social battery, but make sure you’re getting the most out of yours. Feeling connected to others can make an impact on how long you live, with one 2022 study published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health finding that socializing anywhere from occasionally to every day increased the lifespan of older people. (The more frequently, the higher the increase.) Deborah Kado, MD, a geriatrician and co-director of the Stanford Longevity Center, says socialization is arguably the most important factor when it comes to longevity. “One thing I learned from my patients is the importance of having purpose,” she explains. Staying connected to your loved ones and community can help you achieve that, she says. 4. Prioritize whole foods over processed ones. When it comes to what you eat, there’s no perfect diet, says Dr. Kado. But, there are some things you can prioritize. First, eating less processed foods (think: anything in a package with a long shelf-life) is important. Greater exposure to ultra-proccessed foods is associated with a higher risk of adverse health outcomes, including *******, sleep issues, cardiovascular disease, and more in a 2024 review in the BMJ. Instead of processed foods, go for whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and meat. One underrated source of protein? Fish, says Dr. Ferrucci. He minimizes red meat and tries to eat as much fish as possible because of its protective benefit against cardiovascular disease. Eat like a longevity expert: Dr. Kado prepares most of her meals herself and prioritizes whole foods over processed ones. 5. Stick to a sleep routine. You’ve definitely heard just how important sleep is for your health, but it’s easier said than done. While it might not feel like you have a lot of control over how well you do when your head hits the pillow, one thing you can control is how you wind down beforehand. Following the same routine every night can increase your chances of getting some sleep, says Dr. Ferrucci. This means going to bed at a consistent time, shutting down screens before bed (Harvard Health recommends cutting yourself off two to three hours early), and doing the same activity to get ready for bed. Maybe it’s meditation, journaling, reading a book, or having a cup of cherry juice—just make it consistent. Are there any supplements that promote longevity? There isn’t much research supporting any one supplement in terms of its benefits for longevity—except for potentially vitamin D, says Dr. Ferrucci. Still, he’s not sold on either D or a multivitamin being super beneficial, unless directed to by your doctor, of course. It’s also worth keeping in mind that supplements aren’t regulated and could potentially cause harm. So, while supplements might not help, you should make sure they’re not hurting either by discussing them with your doctor first, says Dr. Ferrucci. “It’s not as easy as taking a pill,” says Dr. Kado. But the 20-year-old, who played 18 games in 2024 but only six in his rookie season of 2023 due to injuries, after being taken as fourth pick in the draft, has had his round 1 hopes hit. North Melbourne takes on the Western Bulldogs on March 15 in their opening fixture of the season and Sheezel, the 2023 rising star winner who will be vice-captain of the Kangaroos this season, said Wardlaw had “worked so hard to get his body right”. “I’m shattered for George, I’m not too sure of the extent of it,” he said. Camera IconGeorge Wardlaw is waiting on scans for his injured hamstring. Michael Klein Credit: News Corp Australia “We’ll see how bad it is but I’m shattered for him and we’ll wrap our arms around him. “He’s worked so hard on his body the last few years to get it right so if this is a bit of a setback it will be hard for him. “He was so fit and firing and ready to go and hopefully he will still be able to show that this year.” Assistant coach Leigh Adams said Wardlaw’s resilience would be tested. “He’s done 90 per cent of the pre-season, he’s been really fit and strong … it’s a shame he’ll probably miss some footy,” he said. “The one thing I do know about George is that he’s really resilient and he’s been through it a few times now so he will do his rehab really diligently and make sure he gets himself nice and strong and fit and ready to go but how long that is, we’re not too sure.” Source link #North #Melbourne #young #gun #George #Wardlaws #run #stopped #hamstring #injury Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  15. Should You Eat Chicken And Eggs During The Bird Flu Outbreak? An Infectious Disease Doctor Explains Should You Eat Chicken And Eggs During The Bird Flu Outbreak? An Infectious Disease Doctor Explains “Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links.” The bird flu has been infecting American flocks for years, leading to a series of infections and increased egg prices. But now, there’s a new twist: A different strain has been detected in U.S. poultry. So far, bird flu outbreaks in the U.S. have been from a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) called H5N1. That strain has been responsible for all the egg shortages and infections in humans. Now, a strain called H5N9 was just detected on a duck farm in California, according to a report from World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH). “This is the first confirmed case of HPAI H5N9 in poultry in the United States,” the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in the report, per Reuters. To make things more complicated, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government organizations are not allowed to publicly comment on this and other public health matters due to a communications pause put in place by the Trump administration, per The Washington Post. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is nominated to be the head of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will likely address this at his confirmation hearing on January 29. Here’s how H5N1 and H5N9 are different, plus how to protect yourself from bird flu, according to an infectious disease doctor. Meet the expert: Thomas Russo, MD, is a professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York. What’s the difference between H5N1 and H5N9? H5N1 and H5N9 are both strains of avian flu, explains Thomas Russo, MD, a professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York. H5N9 is a rare form of the influenza A virus that causes highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), a.k.a. bird flu, Russo says. While H5N1 and H5N9 are similar, they’re definitely different—a little like second or third cousins, Russo says. “They’re a little distant,” he says. Both strains can cause HPAI, which can cause these symptoms in humans, per the CDC: mild flu-like upper respiratory symptoms pneumonia requiring hospitalization Is poultry safe to eat? Yes, Russo says that poultry is safe to eat right now. “People should follow appropriate food safety measures,” he says. “Just make sure your poultry is appropriately cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit.” It’s also important to wash your hands well with soap and water after handling raw chicken and poultry. To put things in perspective, Russo says you’re much more likely to get something like salmonella from poultry than bird flu. “The concern of infections from one of these avian influenza viruses is trivial compared to other infections you could get if you don’t handle it properly,” he says. Are eggs and milk safe to eat? Yes, eggs and milk are safe to eat. However, Russo says it’s important to cook your eggs well and to wash your hands after handling eggs. “Don’t eat raw eggs,” he adds. In terms of milk, Russo says it’s important to avoid raw milk, which has contained bird flu in the past. Unfortunately, since so many flocks are being killed due to infections, egg prices are soaring across the country. They’re likely to stay high until the outbreaks are under control. Is there a bird flu vaccine? There is a bird flu vaccine, and a federal stockpile holds several million doses, per The New York Times. However, Kennedy, who has been an outspoken vaccine critic, previously said on X that the bird flu vaccines “appear to be dangerous.” Basically, if a bird flu vaccine is needed, there are concerns that people will actually have access to it. How can I protect myself from bird flu? If you don’t currently work with livestock and don’t have a backyard flock of birds, Russo says that “your risk is extraordinarily low.” However, he recommends doing all of the things mentioned above and steering clear of dead animals, if you happen to spot any. Ultimately, Russo says that the average person should not be stressed about bird flu right now. “There is no grounds for panic at this time,” Russo says. 18. Starbucks’ Niccol aims to tame the chain’s mobile order floods Starbucks’ Niccol aims to tame the chain’s mobile order floods By Juveria Tabassum and Waylon Cunningham (Reuters) – Starbucks’ new CEO, Brian Niccol, has a vision to make Starbucks into a classic coffeehouse, but he has to contend with an unusual challenge: the company’s mobile orders are as disruptive as they are popular. “They come in flooding faster than our customer can get there,” Niccol said in a call with investors on Tuesday. He said baristas’ rush to pile those orders on the counter comes at the expense of providing a more personal touch to in-store customers. Niccol called out mobile ordering as a bottleneck five times during the call, and said the company — which on Tuesday posted a smaller-than-expected drop in comparable sales — would work toward sequencing mobile orders with the help of an algorithm to improve efficiency behind the counter. In some ways, Starbucks’ abundance of mobile orders has presented an opposite problem to what Niccol faced six years ago when he was CEO of ******** restaurant chain Chipotle when he oversaw the launching of a mobile app and drive-through lanes dedicated to orders from that app, called Chipotlanes. Niccol told investors in October 2018 that he believed less than half of Chipotle’s customers knew they could order through digital channels. “We need to improve that dramatically,” he said at the time. Starbucks introduced mobile ordering in 2015, and customers quickly took advantage of it. Mobile orders took precedence for Starbucks under Niccol’s predecessor Laxman Narasimhan as the company focused on driving traffic through its rewards program members tapping into offers and discounts on the app. In contrast, comfortable seating, ceramic mugs and baristas with Sharpies and personalized messages on coffee cups have been at the center of Niccol’s attempt to take Starbucks back to its roots, and the hustle of mobile orders stands counterintuitive to that strategy. The company is piloting an in-store prioritization algorithm to sequence mobile orders away from the current first-come, first-served basis, said Niccol, who was awarded compensation of nearly $96 million in 2024, a year in which he joined Starbucks as CEO in September. The pay package made Niccol one of the highest-paid executives in corporate America. “I was in one of our stores this morning where we’ve already started to put this algorithm in,” Niccol said. “That happens behind the scenes, and it smoothes out those rushes of mobile orders such that our teams are able to provide great moments of connection for the in-cafe customer and the mobile order customer as well.” (Reporting by Juveria Tabassum in Bengaluru and Waylon Cunningham in New York; Editing by Leslie Adler) Source link #Starbucks #Niccol #aims #tame #chains #mobile #order #floods Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  20. Mysterious New Jersey drones were ‘not the enemy’ Mysterious New Jersey drones were ‘not the enemy’ The mysterious drones that lit up skies across the US late last year were authorised by federal regulators and “not the enemy,” the White House has announced. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had approved the drones for research and many also belonged to people in the area, President Donald Trump’s press secretary Karoline Leavitt said at her first White House briefing on Tuesday. The drones were spotted in New Jersey and other nearby states in November and December and led to rampant online speculation about their origins and intentions. Authorities never provided definitive answers about the sightings, saying only that they were not a danger to the public or national security. “In time, it got worse due to curiosity,” Ms Leavitt said of the online rumours. “This was not the enemy.” The statement, made at Ms Leavitt’s first official press conference for the Trump White House, is the most definitive statement yet that there was nothing nefarious about the phenomenon. The previous Biden administration had also concluded there was likely no national security threat invovled. Last December, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said it received more than 5,000 drone sighting tips from concerned citizens. Even former Maryland governor Larry Hogan reported that he saw dozens of drones over his home. New York’s governor touted the state’s drone detecting technology to worried residents. The FAA then temporarily restricted drone flights over 22 cities through January. The previous Biden administration had previously confirmed that residents had spotted drones as well as manned aircraft, but officials had stressed there was “no foreign involvement”. The FAA regulates drone use and flights in the US. Nationally, more than one million drones are registered for use, according to the agency. About 409,000 are registered for commercial use, while about 385,000 are used recreationally. In mid December, four federal agencies declared the investigators had “not identified anything anomalous” about the reports. The sightings, they said, were actually a combination of lawful drones from hobbyists and law enforcement, as well as planes, helicopters and “stars mistakenly reported as drones”. 22. ‘The data of millions of Italians is at risk’ ‘The data of millions of Italians is at risk’ The jury is still out on whether the ******** AI upstart DeepSeek is a game changer or possibly part of an elaborate plan by its hedge fund parent company to short Nvidia and other tech stocks. Whichever it might be (maybe both?), DeepSeek and its large language model has made some major waves. Now, it’s catching the eye of data protection watchdogs. In what appears to be the first major move from one such watchdog since DeepSeek went positively viral in recent days, Euroconsumers, a coalition of consumer groups in Europe, has with the Italian Data Protection Authority filed a complaint related to how DeepSeek handles personal data in relation to GDPR, the data protection regulatory framework in Europe. The Italian DPA confirmed today that it subsequently wrote to DeepSeek with a request for information. “A rischio i dati di milioni di persone in Italia,” it notes. (“The data of millions of Italians is at risk.”) DeepSeek has 20 days to respond. One key detail about DeepSeek that many noticed is the service is made and operates out of China. Per its privacy policy, this includes the information and data that DeepSeek collects and stores, which is also housed in its home country. DeepSeek also briefly notes in its policy that when it transfers data to China from the country where DeepSeek is being used, it does so “in accordance with the requirements of applicable data protection laws.” But Euroconsumers — the organization that brought a successful case against Grok last year over how it used data to train its AI — and the Italian DPA want more detail. Addressing Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence and Beijing DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence, the Italian DPA said it wants to know what personal data is collected, from which sources, and for which purposes – including what information is used to train its AI system – along with what the legal basis is for processing. It also wants more details on those servers in China. Further, it writes in its information request, it wants to know “in the event that personal data is collected through web scraping activities,” how users who are “registered and those not registered to the service have been or are informed about the processing of their data.” The news outlet MLex notes that Euroconsumers also highlighted that there are no details regarding how DeepSeek protects or restricts minors on its services, from age verification to how it handles minors’ data. (DeepSeek’s age policy notes that it is not intended for users under the age of 18, although it does not provide a way to enforce that. For those between the ages of 14 and 18, DeepSeek suggests these younger users read through the privacy policy with an adult.) Story Continues The consumer groups and the Italian watchdog are the first to make a move against DeepSeek. They might not be the last, although follow-ups may not be as swift. Earlier today, DeepSeek was a prime topic at a press conference at the European Commission. Thomas Regnier, Commission Spokesperson for Tech Sovereignty, was asked whether there are concerns at the European level over DeepSeek related to security, privacy, and censorship. Yet the main message was: it’s too soon to say anything about any investigations. “The services offered in Europe will respect our rules,” Regnier noted, adding that the AI Act applies to all AI services offered in the region. He declined to say whether DeepSeek, in the EU’s estimation, respected those rules or not. He was then asked whether the app’s censorship on topics that are politically sensitive in China fell afoul of free speech rules in Europe and if that merited an investigation. “These are very early stages, I’m not talking about an investigation yet,” Regnier said quickly in response. “Our framework is solid enough to tackle potential issues if they are here.” We have contacted DeepSeek regarding the Italian DPA complaint and will update this post as more information becomes available. 23. Trump administration offering buyouts to nearly all federal workers Trump administration offering buyouts to nearly all federal workers A woman walks down the stairs in front of the U.S. Capitol building, ahead of the presidential inauguration of Donald Trump, in Washington on Jan. 15, 2025. Marko Djurica | Reuters The Trump administration is offering millions of federal workers the option to accept buyouts through a government-wide “deferred resignation” program if they resign by Feb. 6. Those who accept the offer will receive pay and benefits through Sept. 30, according to a draft email obtained Tuesday by NBC News. The sweeping buyouts are being offered to “make sure that all federal workers are on board with the new administration’s plan to have federal employees in office and adhering to higher standards,” a senior administration official told NBC on condition of anonymity. “We’re five years past COVID and just 6 percent of federal employees work full-time in office. That is unacceptable,” the official said, citing a report from Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, who co-chairs the congressional DOGE caucus. The White House expects up to 10% of federal employees to take the buyout, the official said. The emails will be sent starting Tuesday afternoon, NBC reported. Buyouts are being offered to all full-time federal employees except military personnel, U.S. Postal Service workers, roles related to immigration enforcement and national security, and “any other positions specifically excluded by your employing agency,” the emails will say, according to NBC. The offers come as President Donald Trump’s administration pushes federal employees to return to the office five days per week, scrapping work-from-home allowances implemented during the coronavirus pandemic. Trump signed an order on his first day in office directing all executive-branch agencies to end remote-work rules. The administration, which has promised massive cuts to purported government waste, is also signaling that most federal agencies will likely be downsized through restructurings and headcount reductions. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told NBC in a statement that if federal workers “don’t want to work in the office and contribute to making America great again, then they are free to choose a different line of work, and the Trump Administration will provide a very generous payout of 8 months.” To accept the buyout, federal employees simply have to reply to the email with the word “Resign,” the emails reportedly instruct. The federal labor union American Federation of Government Employees quickly criticized the Trump administration’s buyout plans. “Purging the federal government of dedicated career federal employees will have vast, unintended consequences that will cause chaos for the Americans who depend on a functioning federal government,” AFGE said in a statement. “Between the flurry of anti-worker executive orders and policies, it is clear that the Trump administration’s goal is to turn the federal government into a toxic environment where workers cannot stay even if they want to,” the group said. 25. *********** sect members guilty in girl’s death *********** sect members guilty in girl’s death Fourteen members of an *********** religious group have been convicted of the manslaughter of an eight-year-old diabetic girl who was denied insulin for almost a week. Elizabeth Struhs died at home in 2022, having suffered from diabetic ketoacidosis, which causes fatally high blood sugar. The court heard that Elizabeth’s treatment was withheld because the group, known as the Saints, opposed medical care, believing God would heal her. Her father Jason and the group’s leader Brendan Stevens were on trial for ******* but were convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter. Twelve other members, including Elizabeth’s mother and brother, were also convicted of manslaughter. All had pleaded not guilty. The judge-alone trial lasted several months and has received international attention since it began in July 2024. Prosecutors called some 60 witnesses when building their case, painting a picture of an “intelligent” child who suffered greatly in her final days. “She was described as speaking little, needing help going to the toilet, and being incontinent,” prosecutor Caroline Marco said of the lead-up to Elizabeth’s death, adding that the girl would have endured vomiting, extreme lethargy, and a loss of consciousness. The congregation, meanwhile, prayed and sung for Elizabeth, whose health deteriorated as she lay on a mattress on the floor of her home in Toowoomba, about 125km (78 miles) west of Brisbane. However, no effort was made to call a doctor, and authorities were not notified until 36 hours after her death, as the group believed she could be brought back to life, the court heard. The 14 defendants, aged between 22 and 67, represented themselves at trial, having all refused legal representation.
