FDA Just Upgraded The Recall Of Costco Grocery Item To The Highest Alert Level FDA Just Upgraded The Recall Of Costco Grocery Item To The Highest Alert Level It’s a new week and we have another food recall to bring to your attention. But this one is a repeat of sorts, so we are asking you to check your freezers, y’all. Last October, as we previously reported, Costco issued a recall for Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with lot number 8512801270 and a best by date of 11/13/2024. Now, this recall has been upgraded by the FDA and given the highest level of risk, a Class 1. Related: These Costco Staples Are The Latest Victims Of Ongoing Listeria Recalls The FDA defines a Class 1 recall as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” The impacted packages of salmon were manufactured by Brooklyn-based Acme Smoked Fish Corp and sold at Costco stores between October 9 and 13. And while these have long since been removed from Costco store shelves, there is concern that customers have them in their freezers and are unaware of the danger. Consumption of food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns. Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems can occur. So do a sweep of the freezer and don’t take any chances. If you have one of these packages, go ahead and throw it out. Number of dog attacks rose after XL Bully ban as police chiefs admit it will be no ‘overnight fix’ Number of dog attacks rose after XL Bully ban as police chiefs admit it will be no ‘overnight fix’ Dog attacks rose in the first five months of the ban on the XL bully breed, figures obtained by The Independent revealed – as police chiefs warn the legislation will be no “overnight fix”. Under the change to the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 last year, on 1 February it became ******** to own an XL bully without a certificate of exemption. The announcement by then prime minister Rishi Sunak was prompted by a series of attacks involving the breed, including the fatal mauling of a man by two dogs near Walsall in the West Midlands. But the move faced opposition from animal ******** groups, such as the RSPCA and Dogs Trust, who said banning the XL bully would not stop attacks, while highlighting a “lack of data” behind the decision. On Wednesday, Chief Constable Mark Harborough admitted the National Police Chiefs’ Council had not yet seen evidence of a reduction in dog attacks, although official figures are not yet available. Patrick O’Hara, the NPCC’s tactical lead for dangerous dogs, added that no forces have yet reported a reduction in incidents and many are putting in additional staff to cope with demand from policing dangerous dogs. The officers expect numbers of XL bullies to decrease gradually over time, but warned it will not be an “overnight fix” and will be a “generational change” spanning the lifetime of a dog. In August, data obtained by The Independent showed the number of recorded incidents of out-of-control dogs injuring people or guide dogs had risen by nine per cent since the ban came in. In the five months since 1 February there were 6,392 attacks recorded by police in England and Wales, up from 5,888 in the same ******* in 2023. The data came from 27 police forces which responded to a freedom of information request. Since the ban there have also been at least seven fatal dog attacks. They include the death of Esther Martin, who was attacked by two XL bullies in Essex. Ashley Warren, 40, has denied being in charge of a dog which caused injury resulting in death while dangerously out of control in a private place. Esther Martin, who was fatally mauled by two XL bully dogs in Jaywick, Essex. A man has been charged by police over the incident on 3 February (PA) In August, David Daintree died when his own XL Bully dog turned on him at his home in Accrington. In the same month, Nicholas Glass was found dead in the garden of a relative after being mauled by four dogs – two of whicih were XL bullies. XL bully owner Sophie Coulthard said the figures proved breed-led legislation was not the solution to tackling the number of attacks. Last year, she was given the green light to bring forward a High Court challenge to the government’s ban on the breed. Speaking to The Independent, she said: “The PM [Rishi Sunak] said it was important to keep the public safe, but this ban has not kept the public safe. “We said all along it was a knee-jerk reaction and that there was an opportunity for real reform in the *** and much better legislation, and this [the data] shows that.” Ms Coulthard said a surge in dog ownership during the pandemic – 11 million in 2023 compared to 9.6 million in 2021, according to charity PDSA – led to irresponsible breeding, which in turn contributed to the rise in attacks. She said that XL bully dogs had been disproportionately headlined for dog attacks, while other breeds didn’t get the same exposure. “This was a quick win from a Conservative government which was in a position where they needed to win votes and put ticks in boxes while they were struggling, and as we can see now it has not brought the solution we all wanted,” added Ms Coulthard. She wants a stricter licensing scheme for breeders, to enforce ******** and good ownership. Sophie Coulthard and her XL bully dog. She says the government ban was a knee-jerk reaction and would not reduce dog attacks (Sophie Coulthard) Dogs Trust and the RSPCA are part of the Dog Control Coalition, which strongly opposed the ban on bullies. The group also had a representative on a working party set up by Defra aimed at reducing dog bites and promoting responsible dog ownership. Despite finishing in July 2023, its findings aren’t yet published. A spokesperson for Dogs Trust said: “We do not believe that banning further types of dog is an effective or sustainable solution to protecting public safety. “Breed specific legislation fails to deliver what it was designed to do. It has not reduced hospital admissions from dog bites, it has not improved public safety and it has not reduced the number of dogs conforming to the breeds or types it legislates against.” The group, which wants Labour to urgently review legislation, also said a ban on breeds led to the “unnecessary suffering and euthanasia of many dogs”. Following the ban on XL bullies, the National Police Chiefs’ Council said 848 dogs were surrendered by their owners and euthanised, with no assessment of their dangerousness, costing forces £340k in vet fees. The first year of XL Bully ban is estimated to cost police £25million in vet and kennel fees alone, said the NPCC In Augusts, RSPCA’s dog ******** expert Dr Samantha Gaines told The Independent she was not surprised by the rise in attacks and urged the new Labour government to change its approach to protecting the public. Supporters of the XL bully breed during a protest against banning the dogs in central London last year (Getty) “This current approach is not working, as is evident by these figures, and needs a complete overhaul, not only to better protect public safety but also to ensure good dog ********,” she said. “We want to see the government commit to tackling the root causes of aggressive behaviour in dogs, which are complex but include improving and enforcing current breeding and dog control regulations, and to promote responsible dog ownership, in order to effectively protect public safety while also ensuring better dog ********.” However, there are some who say the ban on bullies is working. The Centre for Evidence-Based Regulation of Dangerous Dogs (CEBRDD) claimed in August that the breed was proportionately behind more attacks than any other breed in 2023. A spokesperson told The Independent that the ban had been effective in stopping the ***** of the dogs and preventing attacks in public. He claimed that scientific research showed the dogs were almost three times more likely to kill than any other breed, adding that moves for responsible ownership and education, while important, were less effective without breed bans. Highlighting the fatal dog attacks by XLs this year, the CEBRDD also said the rise could have been down to an update in Crown Prosecution Service guidance with dog-on-dog attacks now considered under the offences recorded by police forces. The ban on bullies gained cross-party support last year, including from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer and then shadow environment secretary Steve Reed, who pledged to update the Dangerous Dogs Act and review the list of dangerous breeds if his party won the election. Other breeds banned are American pit bull terriers, Japanese tosas, dogo Argentinos and fila Brasileiros. In August, a Defra spokesperson said: “Ongoing attacks show we need to do more to protect the public from dangerous dogs. “We continue to work with the police, local authorities and animal ******** groups to encourage responsible dog ownership across all breeds. The ban on XL bullies is there to protect public safety, and we expect all XL bully owners to comply with the conditions.” Source link #Number #dog #attacks #rose #Bully #ban #police #chiefs #admit #overnight #fix Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Astronomers discover 196-foot asteroid with 1-in-83 chance of hitting Earth in 2032 Astronomers discover 196-foot asteroid with 1-in-83 chance of hitting Earth in 2032 When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. An illustration shows a small asteroid racing past Earth. | Credit: Robert Lea (created by Canva) A newly discovered asteroid, designated 2024 YR4, has a 1-in-83 chance of striking Earth in December of 2032. The asteroid is estimated to be 196 feet (60 meters) wide, and it is currently 27 million miles away. The near-Earth object (NEO) discovered in 2024, which is around half as wide as a football field is long, will make a very close approach to Earth on Dec. 22, 2032. It’s estimated to come within around 66,000 miles (106,200 kilometers) of Earth on that day, according to NASA’s Center of NEO Studies (CNEOS). However, when orbital uncertainties are considered, that close approach could turn out to be a direct hit on our planet. Such an impact could cause an explosion in the atmosphere, called an “airburst,” or could cause an impact crater when it slams into the ground. This is enough to see asteroid 2024 YR4 leap to the top of the European Space Agency’s NEO impact Risk List and NASA’s Sentry Risk Table. “Odds have slightly increased to 1 in 83,” Catalina Sky Survey engineer and asteroid hunter David Rankin wrote on BlueSky. “This is one of the highest probabilities of an impact from a significantly sized rock ever.” Amateur astronomer Tony Dunn shared a simulation of the asteroid approach on his X feed. The asteroid is rated three on the Torino risk scale, which indicates a close encounter that warrants close attention from astronomers and an over 1% chance of impact. Where could asteroid 2024 YT4 hit Earth? Asteroid 2024 YR4 was initially found by a NASA-funded project called ATLAS, using the project’s telescope located in Rio Hurtado, Chile. Rankin was then able to recover the asteroid from data collected by the Catalina Sky Survey. Space.com reached out to Rankin to learn more about asteroid 2024 YR4. His initial message was clear: “People should absolutely not worry about this yet,” Rankin told Space.com. “Impact probability is still very low, and the most likely outcome will be a close approaching rock that misses us.” Rankin added that, currently, the “risk corridor” for impact runs from South America across the Atlantic to South Africa. “It is just important to keep in mind that its orbit is still too uncertain to know if it will hit, and right now, the most likely outcome is a miss,” he said. “This impact corridor estimation will eventually go stale with new observations and better orbit calculations.” Credit: Robert Lea (created with Canva) after Daniel Bamberger, Northolt Branch Observatories And, he says, even if 2024 YR4 does hit Earth, this isn’t an immediate cause for great concern. There is still a great deal astronomers don’t know about this asteroid, and many of these characteristics have a significant influence on the damage it could cause. “Size and composition are big players in possible damage, along with impact location,” Rankin said. “It’s hard to constrain size and composition with the current orbital situation, as it’s outbound. Typically, the best way to constrain size is with radar observations and those are not possible right now.” He says that astronomers will have a shot at estimating these characteristics in 2028 when 2024 YR4 will make a less risky close approach to Earth, passing within around 5 million miles (8 million kilometers) of our planet. Astronomers can calculate the size of a distant asteroid based on the amount of light it reflects, or its “absolute magnitude.” The problem is, however, that asteroids have varying surface compositions. They can be dark or shiny, and that impacts light-related size estimates. “Based on the calculated absolute magnitude, it’s about 196 feet (60 meters) wide, but that assumes a certain surface reflectivity,” Rankin said. “If the asteroid has a darker surface, that number is too small; if it has a more reflective surface, that number is too high.” That is why they need that radar data to be more sure of the size of asteroid 2024 YR4. What damage could asteroid 2024 YT4 cause? Let’s say the data we have on asteroid 2024 YT4 is currently correct. What kind of risk does an impact by this asteroid pose to Earth? “It is likely around the same size as the 1908 Tunguska rock or the Meteor Crater rock,” Rankin said. “So, while impact effects would be more localized than regional, it certainly has the potential to do serious damage to the area it hits.” Tunguska is currently the largest recorded asteroid strike event in human history, though we know of many greater impacts in prehistoric times. The most notable of these is the catastrophic Chicxulub impact, which happened around 66 million years ago and wiped out two-thirds of life on Earth and ended the reign of the dinosaurs. The Tunguska explosion flattened some 500,000 acres of Siberian forest on June 30, 1908. This image is from the Leonid Kulik expedition in 1927. | Credit: Evgeny Krinov Tunguska was less dramatic, but was no slouch in terms of damage. Releasing the same energy as the detonation of up to 50 million tons of **** when it exploded in the atmosphere over a sparsely populated region of Russia, the blast flattened an estimated 80 million trees over an area of 830 square miles ( 2,150 square km) and possibly killed three people. “If [asteroid 2024 YT4] is made of stony material, it could cause a significant air burst and fireball reaching the ground,” Rankin said. “If made of iron, it will punch right through the atmosphere with little trouble and make an impact crater. This is why understanding not just the orbit but also the composition and size are so critical.” Related Stories: — Earth’s mini-moon has finally departed. Will it ever return as a ‘second moon?’ — Asteroid the size of 3 million elephants zooms past Earth — Astronauts could mine asteroids for food someday, scientists say Rankin and astronomers across the globe will now endeavor to learn as much as they can about asteroid 2024 YT4 before 2032. “We will have the opportunity to continue to track this rock through February with 8-meter class telescopes, which we plan on doing at Catalina Sky Survey,” Rankin said. “It is possible that even after February, we will not know for sure if it will hit or miss in 2032. We should be able to determine that better by 2028, when it should be visible again.” Source link #Astronomers #discover #196foot #asteroid #1in83 #chance #hitting #Earth Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Microsoft Probing If DeepSeek-Linked Group Improperly Obtained OpenAI Data Microsoft Probing If DeepSeek-Linked Group Improperly Obtained OpenAI Data Microsoft Corp. and OpenAI are investigating whether data output from OpenAI’s technology was obtained in an unauthorized manner by a group linked to ******** artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek, according to people familiar with the matter. Microsoft’s security researchers in the fall observed individuals they believe may be linked to DeepSeek exfiltrating a large amount of data using the OpenAI application programming interface, or API, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the matter is confidential. Software developers can pay for a license to use the API to integrate OpenAI’s proprietary artificial intelligence models into their own applications. Microsoft, an OpenAI technology partner and its largest investor, notified OpenAI of the activity, the people said. Such activity could violate OpenAI’s terms of service or could indicate the group acted to remove OpenAI’s restrictions on how much data they could obtain, the people said. DeepSeek earlier this month released a new open-source artificial intelligence model called R1 that can mimic the way humans reason, upending a market dominated by OpenAI and US rivals such as Google and Meta Platforms Inc. The ******** upstart said R1 rivaled or outperformed leading US developers’ products on a range of industry benchmarks, including for mathematical tasks and general knowledge — and was built for a fraction of the cost. The potential threat to the US firms’ edge in the industry sent technology stocks tied to AI, including Microsoft, Nvidia Corp., Oracle Corp. and Google parent Alphabet Inc., tumbling on Monday, erasing a total of almost $1 trillion in market value. OpenAI didn’t respond to a request for comment, and Microsoft declined to comment. DeepSeek and hedge fund High-Flyer, where DeepSeek was started, didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment via email. David Sacks, President Donald Trump’s artificial intelligence czar, said Tuesday there’s “substantial evidence” that DeepSeek leaned on the output of OpenAI’s models to help develop its own technology. In an interview with Fox News, Sacks described a technique called distillation whereby one AI model uses the outputs of another for training purposes to develop similar capabilities. “There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled knowledge out of OpenAI models and I don’t think OpenAI is very happy about this,” Sacks said, without detailing the evidence. In a statement responding to Sacks’ comments, OpenAI didn’t directly address his comments about DeepSeek. “We know PRC based companies — and others — are constantly trying to distill the models of leading US AI companies,” an OpenAI spokesperson said in the statement, referring to the People’s Republic of China. “As the leading builder of AI, we engage in countermeasures to protect our IP, including a careful process for which frontier capabilities to include in released models, and believe as we go forward that it is critically important that we are working closely with the US government to best protect the most capable models from efforts by adversaries and competitors to take US technology.” © 2025 Bloomberg L.P. Are Gold Miners a Better Bet Than Gold Right Now? Are Gold Miners a Better Bet Than Gold Right Now? Investing in the ETF is pretty much an investment in the metal itself. If gold rises in price, you make money; if it falls, you lose money. However, an investment in a gold mining ETF is much more complicated. , the featured ETF for gold miners, is a basket of stocks that are involved in the exploration and development of gold mines, and the production of gold from those mines. Therefore, gold mining companies and the ETF are far more subject to move according to overall market conditions. prices could rise, and one can still lose money in gold miners. This is TradingView’s chart of gold miners () versus Gold. Valuations in gold mining stocks remain cheap compared to the precious metal which is currently nearing new all-time highs. We do see the potential that the ratio has bottomed out though and could favor the miners going forward. This is what we are watching for with the silver-to-gold ratio. is also underperforming and that too is flashing a cheap ratio. In the past, we have seen miners lead gold prices. For now, though, looking at the chart of gold miners on a Daily and weekly timeframes, a few conclusions can be drawn. Why am I even focusing on gold miners right now? Gold miners primarily track inflation by monitoring the “all-in sustaining cost (AISC)” which calculates the total cost of producing an ounce of gold. AISC considers operating expenses, capital expenditures, and exploration costs A rising AISC indicates a significant impact from inflation on their operations. The daily chart of GDX shows an Accumulation Phase. The 50 DMA is under the 200-DMA but the slope on the 50-DMA is sloping up. GDX has cleared the 6-month calendar range high. GDX is outperforming the benchmark while the momentum remains in a bearish divergence. The weekly chart is in a Bullish Phase. GDX over a longer timeframe, underperforms the benchmark. Apple Partners With SpaceX to Offer Starlink Satellite Connectivity on iPhone; Beta Testing Commences Apple Partners With SpaceX to Offer Starlink Satellite Connectivity on iPhone; Beta Testing Commences Apple is bringing the Starlink network to iPhone, according to a recent report published by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. It is speculated to work similarly to the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on iPhone that lets users get in touch with emergency services when they do not have a cellular network or Wi-Fi connectivity. The Cupertino-based technology company has partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has developed the Starlink satellite network, along with a US telecommunications provider to commence its testing in beta. Starlink Network on iPhone Apple introduced the Emergency SOS via Satellite feature with the iPhone 14 models in 2022 in the US and Canada. While it offers cellular connectivity using one of Globalstar’s 24 satellites in low-earth orbit, the Starlink partnership is said to bring the same functionality too, explains Apple. In a report, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman highlighted that it will arrive as an alternative to the company’s in-house service and will be limited to the US. Initially, it will only enable texting services but will also be expanded to offer data and voice calls in the future. For its rollout, the iPhone maker has partnered with T-Mobile and the service is currently available in beta. Customers can reportedly sign up to access an “early version” of the Starlink service on select iPhone models. As per Gurman, the latest iPhone models, such as the iPhone 16, currently supports this initiative and Apple plans to introduce it to the Apple Watch Ultra later this year. This capability is said to have been introduced on iPhone with the latest iOS 18.3 update released on Monday. A small batch of iPhone users with T-Mobile as their carrier are reported to have received the following message: You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3. As per Gurman, T-Mobile iPhone models, which are part of the programme and at a location without cellular connectivity, will first try to pair with SpaceX satellites. Alongside, iPhone users will also be able to enable texting via Globalstar and contact emergency services through Apple. And while the existing Emergency SOS via Satellite requires them to point their phone towards a satellite, the Starlink service is reported to work automatically. ******** AI firm on US national security radar ******** AI firm on US national security radar US officials are considering the national security implications of an apparent artificial intelligence (AI) breakthrough by ******** firm DeepSeek, according to White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. The announcement comes as there were reports the US navy has banned its members from using DeepSeek’s apps due to “potential security and ethical concerns”. Meanwhile, the maker of ChatGPT, OpenAI, has promised to work closely with the US government to prevent rivals from taking its technology. Earlier this week, DeepSeek’s reportedly cheap yet powerful AI model caused a slump in the stocks of US technology firms as investors questioned the billions of dollars they are spending on new AI infrastructure. “I spoke with [the National Security Council] this morning, they are looking into what [the national security implications] may be,” said Ms Leavitt, who also restated US President Donald Trump’s remarks a day earlier that DeepSeek should be a wake-up call for the US tech industry. According to CNBC, the US navy has sent an email to its staff warning them not to use the DeepSeek app due to “potential security and ethical concerns associated with the model’s origin and usage”. The US Navy did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BBC News. Speaking on Fox News, the recently appointed “White House AI and crypto czar”, David Sacks, also suggested that DeepSeek may have used the models developed by top US firm OpenAI to get better. This process – which involves one AI model learning from another – is called knowledge distillation. “There’s substantial evidence that what DeepSeek did here is they distilled the knowledge out of OpenAI’s models,” Mr Sacks said. “I think one of the things you’re going to see over the next few months is our leading AI companies taking steps to try and prevent distillation… That would definitely slow down some of these copycat models.” OpenAI echoed this in a later statement that said ******** and other companies are “constantly trying to distill the models of leading US AI companies.” “As the leading builder of AI, we engage in countermeasures to protect our [intellectual property]… and believe as we go forward that it is critically important that we are working closely with the U.S. government to best protect the most capable models”. Meanwhile, DeepSeek says it has been the target of cyber attacks. On Monday it said it would temporarily limit registrations because of “large-scale malicious attacks” on its software. A banner currently showing on the company’s website says registration may be busy as a result of the attacks. Yuyuan Tantian, a social media channel under China’s state broadcaster CCTV, claims the firm has faced “several” cyber attacks in recent weeks, which have increased in “intensity”. DeepSeek shot to fame only last week as AI geeks lauded its latest AI model and people began downloading its chatbot on app stores. Its rise caused a slump in US tech stocks, many of which have since recovered some ground. But America’s AI industry was shaken by the apparent breakthrough, especially because of the prevailing view that the US was far ahead in the race. A slew of trade restrictions banning China’s access to high-end chips was believed to have cemented this. Although China has boosted investment in advanced tech to diversify its economy, DeepSeek is not one of the big ******** firms that have been developing AI models to rival US-made ChatGPT. Experts say the US still has an advantage – it is home to some of the biggest chip companies – and that it’s unclear yet exactly how DeepSeek built its model and how far it can go. As DeepSeek rattled markets this week, President Trump described it as “a wake-up call” for the US tech industry, while suggesting that it could ultimately prove to be a “positive” sign. “If you could do it cheaper, if you could do it [for] less [and] get to the same end result. I think that’s a good thing for us,” he told reporters on board Air Force One. He also said he was not concerned about the breakthrough, adding the US will remain a dominant player in the field. Treasure Coast city ranked No. 3 nationwide for home price increase over past decade Treasure Coast city ranked No. 3 nationwide for home price increase over past decade Port St. Lucie ranked No. 3 out of 122 mid-sized U.S. cities in the largest increase in home prices over the last decade, according to a Construction Coverage study. The city saw a 175.9% increase in home prices from 2014-24, substantially out-growing national averages and standing out against other Florida cities in the real estate market, according to the construction and real estate consulting business. The median home price increased by $251,491, from $143,013 in 2014 to $394,504 in 2024, while the median household income was $74,928. Port St. Lucie was one of eight Florida cities that saw over 190% price increases — about double the national average. That put Florida No. 2 among 15 states, with a 132.2% increase. McLaren kicks off definition drilling at WA titanium project McLaren kicks off definition drilling at WA titanium project McLaren Minerals is gearing up for a six-week infill drilling program to gather metallurgical samples, explore for extensions and strengthen its resource at the company’s existing McLaren titanium sands project in Western Australia’s Eucla Basin. The campaign is designed by ERM Australia Consultants and kicks off in two weeks. It is expected to cover 6000 metres of air core drilling. The program’s top priority is to collect about five tonnes of sample material, which will be sent to IHC’s Mining laboratory in Queensland to conduct further metallurgical studies. The company’s conceptual prefeasibility study is based on a medium-sized, 10 million tonne per annum (tpa) spiral concentration plant, which could produce up to 400,000tpa of ilmenite in concentrate annually. IHC’S metallurgical test work will check if the currently designed process flowsheet is fit for purpose or whether it still needs tweaking to improve recoveries. It will also be used to refine an optimal strategy to deal with the residual clay impurities, known as slimes. Earlier work confirmed a 75 per cent recovery rate for ilmenite, altered ilmenite and titanium dioxide minerals when the sample material was passed through wet concentration and beneficiation plants. The overall recovery rate of titanium was 57 per cent, while zircon recovery was 70 per cent. The final product from processing testwork, ilmenite, was judged to be of sufficient grade to be a sulphate ilmenite, while the rutile was typically 95.7 per cent titanium dioxide with only 1.5 per cent iron impurity. The zircon had less than 265 parts per million uranium and thorium, which is considered low by industry standards. Slimes reduced to less than 200 grams per tonne when a 3 per cent gypsum settling agent was added. Our upcoming drilling program marks an exciting step forward for our McLaren titanium project. This program will provide essential data for metallurgical testing, enhance resource confidence and explore the potential for extensions, ensuring we continue to progress toward our development goals. The campaign also aims to conduct infill drilling to increase the company’s confidence in the existing total 280-million-tonne resource, which is grading at 4.8 per cent. In particular, the company is targeting an improvement in its indicated category, which currently stands at 79Mt grading 6 per cent heavy minerals. As the orebody remains open in all directions, the rig will also be mobilised, particularly to the southern and eastern fringes of the deposit, to test for extensions to the existing orebody. Adding to its recent momentum, McLaren also confirmed two exploration licences covering the bulk of the deposit have been successfully extended for a further 18 months until September 2026. With drilling rigs set to mobilise in the coming weeks, McLaren is positioning itself for a busy year ahead as it pushes towards unlocking the full potential of its titanium-rich asset. Trump order set to halt supply of ****, malaria drugs to poor countries, sources say Trump order set to halt supply of ****, malaria drugs to poor countries, sources say By Jennifer Rigby LONDON (Reuters) – The Trump administration has moved to stop the supply of lifesaving drugs for ****, malaria and tuberculosis, as well as medical supplies for newborn babies, in countries supported by USAID around the globe, a memo reviewed by Reuters showed. On Tuesday, contractors and partners who work with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) began receiving such memos to stop work immediately, sources said. The move is part of a wider freeze on U.S. aid and funding put in place since Trump took office on Jan. 20, while programmes are reviewed. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. One such memo went to Chemonics, a large U.S. consulting firm which works with USAID on the supply of medicines for a range of conditions worldwide. The memo covers the firm’s work on ****, malaria and tuberculosis as well as contraception and maternal and child health supplies, one USAID source and one former USAID official told Reuters. “This is catastrophic,” said Atul Gawande, former head of global health at USAID who left the agency this month. “Donated drug supplies keeping 20 million people living with **** alive. That stops today.” Chemonics and USAID did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. Interruptions in treatment for diseases mean that patients risk getting sick, as well as, in the case of **** in particular, transmitting the virus to others. It also means drug-resistant strains may emerge, Gawande said. He said other partners had also received notices that meant they would be unable to deliver medicines to clinics even if they had them in stock, or open the clinics if they are funded by the U.S. That includes organisations working with 6.5 million orphans and vulnerable children with **** in 23 countries, he said. Trump ordered a 90-day pause in foreign development assistance on Jan. 20, the day he took the oath of office, pending assessments of efficiencies and consistency with U.S. foreign policy. His administration has also put on leave about 60 senior career officials at the USAID, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday. The administration’s actions threaten billions of dollars of life-saving aid from the world’s largest single donor. In fiscal year 2023, the U.S. disbursed $72 billion in assistance. It provided 42% of all humanitarian aid tracked by the United Nations in 2024. All the Historical Inaccuracies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows That Ubisoft Chose to Ignore ******** Off the Fans All the Historical Inaccuracies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows That Ubisoft Chose to Ignore ******** Off the Fans Would you be surprised to hear that Ubisoft is under fire once again for the historical inaccuracies in Assassin’s Creed Shadows? This is a topic that we’ve already discussed at length back when the game was first revealed. But with the March 20, 2025 release date coming up soon, there are new problems. The whole situation is a can of worms at this point. | Image Credit: Ubisoft The game just had its last Early Preview build go out to content creators and reviewers. And it doesn’t look pretty. From having a terrible grasp of seasons to having armor, clothing, and architecture that is historically not possible, people online have brought up a lot of concerns. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is just getting no love from fans Is it nitpicking or actually valid? | Image Credit: Ubisoft Let’s first look at the biggest issue which is one that we’ve already talked about before. Yasuke is one of Assassin’s Creed Shadows‘ two protagonists and the devs have presented him as a samurai, but is it true? Yasuke was an African man who served under Oda Nobunaga, but there is no concrete evidence that he was ever granted samurai status. People online previously pointed out that he was more of a sword-bearer or bodyguard, and his brief time in Japan makes his portrayal as a full-fledged warrior questionable. However, Reddit user u/ParallelPain went to great lengths to find and compile evidence that suggests that he was indeed a samurai alongside the other things suggested as well. Comment byu/JumboTheCrab from discussion inAskHistorians Another issue that people bring up is the presence of ******** influences in the game’s depiction of Japan. Fans have pointed out that some of the in-game architecture and artistic elements resemble ******** styles rather than Japanese ones. 背景は日本というよりも中国っぽく見えます。なんだか奇妙な雰囲気がありますね。 — Dr. Alaric Naudé (@Goryodynasty) January 27, 2025 Comment byu/DecisionTechnical461 from discussion inOutOfTheLoop This brings us to the newest and perhaps most talked about problem and that is the watermelon and sakura trees. A new screenshot from the Early Preview shows Yasuke near a stall selling watermelons while cherry blossoms bloom in the background. According to people online, this scene is an agricultural impossibility because watermelons did not reach Japan until the Edo ******* (1603-1868), decades after the game’s 1579 setting. FYI, watermelons >are never seen in the same season as cherry blossoms (summer vs spring) >didn’t reach Japan until the Edo *******, long after the Sengoku ******* But Ubisoft HAD to include watermelons for the legendary forgotten ****** samurai HAHAHAHAHAHA remarkable [Hidden Content] — Kangmin Lee | 이강민 (@kangminjlee) January 27, 2025 On top of this, cherry blossoms bloom in spring, while watermelons are a summer fruit. So how are they both in the same scene? The community has used these factors as proof that Ubisoft is more interested in creating a visually appealing but inaccurate world rather than respecting historical facts. Ubisoft is the one that claimed to be accurate in the first place The devs can’t back pedal on their words now. | Image Credit: Ubisoft There is also a screenshot of a female sumo wrestler character from the Early Preview which has gotten some backlash. In the picture, the game shows her having an active ability called Rikishi which literally translates to “strong man.” There’s also evidence that suggests the Sengoku ******* was full of famines and food shortages. So how would there be a female sumo wrestler of that size? But why does any of this matter when Assassin’s Creed has never been about historical accuracy in the first place? This is the main question that people have asked in response to the many complaints. The answer is simple. The developers themselves have mentioned that they “maintained historical fidelity” and that “keeping it authentic” was their main goal. (Via Famitsu/Reddit) So yeah, fans are rightfully ******* and there is nothing Ubisoft can do. Back in July 2024, the company released a statement attempting to address concerns. In it, the company acknowledged the criticisms from Japanese players and apologized for certain mistakes, such as the inclusion of ******** subtitles in promotional materials. But they also defended their portrayal of Yasuke, arguing that his role as a samurai is open to interpretation. Ubisoft also reiterated that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a work of historical fiction rather than a documentary. Well, you shouldn’t have promised “historical fidelity” then. The company is contradicting itself by marketing the game as historically accurate while simultaneously dismissing concerns over inaccuracies. Trump signs 4 new executive orders, transforming military
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Trump signs 4 new executive orders, transforming military Trump signs 4 new executive orders, transforming military President Trump signed a bevy of new executive orders Monday evening that have the potential to significantly transform the Defense Department (DOD). The new orders prevent transgender people from openly serving in the military, greenlight the process of developing a missile defense shield to protect the U.S., and reinstate service members that voluntarily left or were forced out of the military over COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Trump also penned an expected executive order that would “abolish” every diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) office within the DOD and Department of Homeland Security, the latter of which houses the U.S. Coast Guard. All four were signed late Monday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s first formal day in office. The president revoked an executive order from his predecessor, former President Biden, penned in 2021 that allowed transgender people to serve in the military. He also directed Hegseth to set new military preparedness requirements. Trump said “expressing a false ‘gender identity’ divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service.” The order directs the Defense Department to begin forging sketches for “an Iron Dome for America,” a missile defense system that would protect Americans from potential “ballistic, hypersonic, cruise missiles” and other space-based attacks from “peer, near-peer and rogue adversaries.” The project was discussed during the Reagan administration but was never developed. The president vowed on the campaign trail that he would ensure service members who were either dismissed or left the military after refusing to get a COVID-19 vaccine will be reinstated. He delivered on that promise late Monday, signing an order that also allows them to retain “their former rank and receive full back pay, benefits, bonus payments or compensation.” “The vaccine mandate was an unfair, overbroad, and completely unnecessary burden on our service members,” Trump said. “Further, the military unjustly discharged those who refused the vaccine, regardless of the years of service given to our Nation, after failing to grant many of them an exemption that they should have received.” The executive order banning DEI programs bars the Pentagon, Armed Forces and related educational institutions from promoting or advancing “un-American, divisive, discriminatory, radical, extremist and irrational theories,” including suggesting the U.S.’s founding documents were “racist,” “sexist,” or pushing “gender ideology.” It also directs Hegseth to set in motion an “internal review that documents actions taken in pursuit of DEI initiatives, including all instances of race and sex discrimination and activities designed to promote a race- or sex-based preferences system.” The report is expected to be delivered to the Defense chief within 90 days. X Money Digital Payments Service Unveiled; Platform Partners Visa to Introduce P2P Payments X Money Digital Payments Service Unveiled; Platform Partners Visa to Introduce P2P Payments X Money was unveiled on Tuesday by Elon Musk’s X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. The new digital wallet and payments service is set to enable users to send and receive money, in a peer to peer (P2P) system. Users will be able to transfer money from their bank account to a digital wallet, then transfer funds to another wallet on the platform. X Money will work with US-based payments firm Visa, and the service is expected to compete with apps like Cashapp, Venmo, and Zelle. X Money to Use Visa Direct for Instant Fund Transfers X CEO Linda Yaccarino announced details of the new platform on Tuesday, stating that support for X Money accounts would arrive “later this year”. The platform has partnered with Visa, and users will be able to instantly transfer funds into their ‘X Wallet’ using Visa Direct, she added. These funds can be used to make P2P payments on the service. In addition to moving funds into the digital wallet, X Money will also allow users to link their debit card to their account and make P2P payments on the platform, the CEO said in the post. P2P payments are currently supported by various apps in the US, from Cashapp to Venmo (or even Apple Pay Cash). Users will also have the option to transfer funds (presumably from their X Wallet) to their bank account. There’s no word from X on when X Money will be available to users. Visa said in a post on X that US–based X Money account users would be able to make real time transfers using a debit card. One Step Closer to an ‘Everything App’ After purchasing Twitter and rebranding it to X, Elon Musk made his plans for the platform clear. The billionaire plans to build X into an “everything app” inspired by ******** apps like WeChat with support for making payments, making purchases, messaging and other functionality. X has been working on adding support for digital payments for the past couple of years now. In December 2023, Musk told ARK Invest’s Cathie Wood that X would require approval in the form of licences from several US states, before it could begin operations as a money transmitter. As of Wednesday, a support document for the payment platform reveals that X has received licences from 41 states, and that X Payments LLC is also registered as a Money Service Business (MSB) with the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN). X Money could eventually compete with PayPal, the payment services company that was formed after Confinity merged with the Elon Musk-run X.com bank in 2000. The billionaire has had plans to launch a payments platform for over two decades, and they could finally come to fruition later this year with the launch of X Money. Steve Smith enters elite club with 10,000th Test run Steve Smith enters elite club with 10,000th Test run Steve Smith has written his name in the history books as only the fourth *********** to score 10,000 Test runs. Having famously finished the recent home summer just one run short, Smith reached the milestone with a single to mid-on on day one of the series opener against Sri Lanka in Galle on Wednesday. The *********** contingent of the crowd stood and applauded as Smith scampered home from the first ball he faced off Prabath Jayasuriya. Smith smiled at the umpire, and raised his bat, first tentatively and then with clear satisfaction. Only minutes later, Smith was dropped on one run by Jayasuriya, surviving to hold his place opposite Usman Khawaja at the crease. He may have missed the chance to celebrate in front of friends and family after being caught behind on 4 at the SCG against India, but the significance of the milestone was not lost on Smith. Smith is only the 15th player to reach 10,000 runs and fourth *********** behind former Test captains Ricky Ponting (13,378), Allan Border (11,174) and Steve Waugh (10,927). “I probably thought about that a little bit too much in Sydney a few weeks back,” Smith said the day before play began against Sri Lanka. “I’ve never really been one for milestones but to tick off 10,000 with those guys would be pretty special.” Ponting appears destined to remain ahead of his countrymen for the foreseeable future; the Tasmanian superstar is second on the all-time rankings behind only India’s ‘Little Master’ Sachin Tendulkar (15,921) Smith is also one of only two active Test players to have scored 10,000 runs, with former England captain Joe Root fifth on the all-time list with 12,972. The next-most prolific active ***********, Usman Khawaja, has scored barely half as many as Smith. Smith holds the distinction of holding the second-highest average (55.86 before play) of anyone to have reached the milestone, trailing only Sri Lanka legend Kumar Sangakkara (12,400 runs at 57.40). Smith would undoubtedly have joined batting’s most elite club earlier in his career but for a year-long suspension handed down over his role in the Newlands ball-tampering scandal of 2018. The 35-year-old has long been coy on his retirement plans but could nevertheless pass Waugh by the end of his career to become the third-most prolific Australia Test run-scorer of all time. He is likely to overtake Pakistan middle-order maestro Younis Khan (10,099) and retired Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar (10,122) to finish the calendar year in 13th place on the rankings for most Test runs.
