The Dyson handheld vacuum I’ve been waiting for is finally here, and it looks set to blow all other handheld vacs out of the water
The Dyson handheld vacuum I’ve been waiting for is finally here, and it looks set to blow all other handheld vacs out of the water
Dyson has launched the Dyson Car+Boat handheld vacuum
It has many of the same features as Dyson’s full-sized stick vacuums
Available in US now for $199.99, and in the *** from 4 Feb at £249.99
I’ve been waiting for Dyson to release a handheld vacuum, and my patience has finally paid off: today, the brand unveiled the Dyson Car+Boat, and it looks set to outshine the rest of the best handheld vacuums currently on the market.
The Car+Boat looks like someone took a Dyson stick vacuum and shrunk it in the wash. You can’t really tell from the press photos, but this thing is dinky. That pint-sized build packs a punch though – this handheld model has a lot in common with the best Dyson cordless vacuums from the wider range, including powerful suction, useful detail tools, advanced filtration and a long battery life. Unfortunately, the similarity also extends to the price – its list price is $199.99 / £249.99, which is cheaper than the cheapest Dyson stick vacuum, but much more expensive than your average car vacuum.
Before I get too far into it, I’ll be clear that despite being called the Car+Boat, this is not a wet-dry vacuum. It’s just a regular handheld vacuum, aimed at people who might own a boat. Dyson is nothing if not aware of its target market. Other things its designed to tackle include dirt, debris, allergens, **** hair, upholstery and bedding.
Let’s start with battery life, which is the bit that I’m probably most excited about. Most cordless handheld vacuums offer you a maximum of 30 minutes of cleaning, but sometimes it’s more like 15 minutes. Here you have a full 50 minutes, which is up there with the best full-sized cordless vacuums on the market – and, in fact, longer than you’ll get with the Dyson V8 .
That accounts for the fact that cleaning cars, furniture and, uh, boats, is fiddly. It takes time to do it properly, and there’s nothing more annoying than running out of juice once you’ve wedged yourself into a footwell. With nearly an hour of cleaning, you have time to get into every nook and cranny.
Dyson also promises top-notch suction. The proof will be in the testing (a full review is in the works) but the specs look promising – the motor spins at 110,000rpm, same as on the V8, which is the oldest Dyson stick vacuum in the current lineup. There’s a fully sealed filtration system that can capture 99.99% of particles as small as 0.3 microns (the same as all but the very newest and most expensive Dyson stick vacuum). That includes dust mites, **** dander and other allergens.
The Dyson vacuum attachments are similar to those you’ll get with a full-sized stick vac, too. There’s a Mini Motorized Tool for pulling up stubborn dirt and sticky hair, a 2-in-1 Combination Tool (pictured above) that combines a dusting brush and wide nozzle, and a Crevice Tool for edges and narrow gaps.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
While this is the only dedicated handheld in the current Dyson lineup, its not the first handheld from the brand. Most recently, there was the Dyson Humdinger, which has just been discontinued in the US, and which left the *** lineup back in 2022. Of course, any of Dyson’s cordless stick vacuums can be used in handheld mode by removing the floor wand and adding a detail tool, but the main vacuum unit tends to be too bulky and heavy to be an ideal choice as a car vacuum.
The Dyson Car+Boat is available in the US from today (29 January) at Dyson.com, and will go on ***** at third-party retailers the first week of February. It has a list price of $199.99. In the ***, it will go on ***** at Dyson.co.*** from 4 February, with a list price of £249.99.

Labour must make economic growth ideas work this time
Labour must make economic growth ideas work this time
Labour were talking about economic growth for months before the general election and they have been talking about it for months afterwards as well.
The thing is, there hasn’t been any, or next to none of it.
This is a problem, for the daily lives of millions of us, and the government’s prospects and popularity, when, as the prime minister puts it in an article in The Times today, “growth is the defining mission of this government”.
The economy is coughing, spluttering and wheezing – “the sickness of stagnation and decline” as Sir Keir Starmer puts it — and the government’s critics – including, privately, some of its own senior ministers – reflect now that their doomy and gloomy language early on did not help, and perhaps made things worse.
So now they are trying to change the vibe. The talk will emphasise action, dynamism and optimism.
Here are eight words, in four quotes from the Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ speech to business leader this morning which give you a sense of that:
“Huge potential.”
“Exciting developments.”
“Great companies.”
“Fundamental strengths.”
The mantra from folk at the top of government is their craving for what they call “visible proofpoints”.
This is Westminster speak for cranes in the sky and shovels in the ground – things they can point at which people might associate with progress.
But here is the rub: so many of these ideas will be keenly contested.
That is precisely why some of them carry the distinct aroma of déjà vu – ideas tried but never actually delivered before.
Take the expansion of Heathrow Airport. There has been talk of a third runway in west London since not long after the Wright brothers were first airborne.
Now there will be more talk of it and no planes for ages, even if a planning application is actually successful.
I hear that an internal piece of work commissioned within government concluded the new runway would not be finished before 2040 and the biggest rise in passengers would be people in transit – getting off one plane and immediately getting on another – and so some wonder how much benefit that would actually bring the country.
All those arguments begin now, or start again now.
But what the government wants to achieve here is deliver a massive signal of intent – and a willingness to embrace those inevitable arguments and win them.
There will be more of them, and noisy ones too, with their plans, again not original, to economically turbo charge the areas around and between Oxford and Cambridge.
A corridor of massive potential but pathetic transport connections is the thrust of the argument – how come it takes two and a half hours by train to make a journey between two cities 66 miles apart?
Now there is talk of a dual carriageway, better rail services, new homes, new reservoirs; a splurge of busyness to transform the region into “Britain’s Silicon Valley”.
There is little doubting the government’s ambition: the prime minister is comparing his vision to the deregulation of the City of London under Lady Thatcher and the revolutions of globalisation under New Labour.
The big questions are will it work, and what happens if it doesn’t?
So many western economies are weathering an era of the scars of the financial crisis, conflict, pandemic and the colossal and rapid transfer of economic heft to China and the east.
Sclerotic has become the new normal, with huge consequences politically, economically and socially – how we see ourselves, how many imagine the future.
Can, this time, a big shove from the government turn things around?

ADX banks $2.3m in oil, gas sales revenue from European expansion
ADX banks $2.3m in oil, gas sales revenue from European expansion
ADX Energy has banked $2.3 million in sales for the latest quarter from its Austrian oil and gas projects, with net production averaging 218 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The oil and gas explorer and producer operates primarily in Austria and Italy, with interests in the Vienna Basin and the Sicily Channel. It is proactively developing its Austrian asset base and exploring new opportunities in energy-starved Europe.
ADX started commercial production from the Anshof-2A sidetrack oil appraisal well in Upper Austria in December last year and also began testing the Welchau-1 gas discovery.
ADX also successfully secured a gas exploration permit in Italy’s Sicily Channel and renewed its Austrian licences until 2028 and secured the extension of $1.25m loan notes until March 2026.
The company had $9.1m in the bank at the end of the quarter.
While the initial results from Welchau-1 testing have been disappointing, the Welchau discovery is significant and warrants further evaluation given the presence of hydrocarbons, the shallow onshore location in a potentially large structural setting with deeper potential and identified follow-up exploration opportunities.
Tchacos said due to its structural and reservoir complexity, Welchau would require further work to determine the potential of the play and ADX would continue to develop its Austrian asset base focussing in the near term on multiple low risk, proven, drill ready and quick to commercialise oil and gas prospects.
ADX now plans to enhance its exploration portfolio and form partnerships for near-term drilling prospects, aiming to create shareholder value.
Next quarter’s planned activities include continued monitoring and sampling of the Welchau-1 well and resolving environmental clearance objections so that it can recommence flow testing operations.
ADX will also dive deep into its new gas exploration permit covering 346 square kilometres in the highly prospective Sicily Channel.
Historical drilling in the area has confirmed the presence of “sweet” natural gas in shallow reservoirs ranging from 700 metres to 1300m deep. The project can be progressed quickly due to the presence of high-quality seismic data.
It also offers ADX an opportunity to deliver to Europe a cleaner, locally sourced gas supply as the company opens a new frontier for itself in southern Europe to complement its existing and highly successful gas-producing fields in Upper Austria.

Robot dog battles drone in fireworks fight, sparking future warfare concerns
Robot dog battles drone in fireworks fight, sparking future warfare concerns
A robotic dog fighting an aerial drone is the future of warfare that one would expect in science fiction.
But a video depicting this real-life scene has gone viral on social media sites in China and brought up discussions about a future where machines engage in warfare and what it would take to become the ultimate victor.
Fighting with drones has gone from futuristic to a common theme in warfare. At the turn of this century, the US flew its first drones with wings as wide as 66 feet (20 m) and a cruising altitude of 50,000 feet (15,000 m), but it cost millions of dollars to build one.
In just over two decades, drones have become smaller, nimbler, and so inexpensive to produce that they have become dispensable.
Last month, the Ukrainian defense ministry confirmed that its armed forces used more than 1.2 million drones in 2024 during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War. On its part, Russia has produced over 1.4 million drones as both sides deploy hundreds of drones in their attacks.
Dog vs Drone
The clip circulated on social media does not mention the location of the shot but shows the drone with fireworks fitted onto its landing gear. The dog also has a fireworks firing mechanism mounted on its back, and the two are dueling each other while dodging shots fired.
In the short clip, the drone also moves away from its position along an arc to present a new angle of attack, forcing the dog to maneuver itself and combat the new threat. It is unclear from the clip if the two robots are being controlled manually or are operating autonomously, but it has opened up discussions on what warfare means in the near future.
Users on social media went ahead to speculate that this was the ‘First Machine War’ and ‘Dawn of Modern Warfare powered by artificial intelligence,’ reported the South China Morning Post (SCMP), while others commented on the advantages of these drones in certain environments and how they could be deployed.
Civilian tech turns to military might
From the imagery available, it appears that both the drone and the robotic dog used in this demonstration are not of military build at all. The drone is likely from DJI, while the robotic dog is from Unitree. Both manufacturers are based in China and strongly maintain that their technology is for civilian use only.
Last year, Shenzhen-based DJI categorically suspended its operations in Russia and Ukraine since its technology was being used for military applications. Interesting Engineering has previously reported how robotic dogs can be easily equipped with a gun to fire at targets. Amidst all this, China has tightened its export policies about drones and their components to prevent military use.
However, other companies such as China North Industries Group Corporation (Norinco) have demonstrated a robotic wolf that can support military operations such as reconnaissance and transport and even help in attacks during operations, the SCMP report added.
The ******** military has also showcased two versions of the robotic dogs, built by Unitree, in joint military exercises with Cambodia last year.
This signals China’s real intent to use drones for military purposes in the near future. This is unsurprising since even technology as benign as Microsoft’s Holo Lens has found a military application. Drones and robotic dogs have far greater utility on the battlefield, and it is only a matter of time before we see them deployed more frequently.
China is priming itself to become the main supplier of these units. The question is how will the US respond?

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 Price Details Surface Online
Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S25 series of smartphones earlier this month, including the base, Plus, and Ultra variants. Later this year, the South Korean tech giant is expected to introduce the next generation of foldable smartphones, including the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Over the past few weeks, several details, including display, chipset and production units, about the purported handsets have surfaced online. A tipster has now hinted at the expected price of the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 Price (Expected)
According to an X post by tipster PandaFlash (@PandaFlashPro), the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 will launch at the same prices as the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 in most markets.
At launch, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 price in India started at Rs. 1,64,999 for the 12GB + 256GB option, while the 512GB and 1TB variants cost Rs. 1,76,999 and Rs. 2,00,999, respectively. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6, on the other hand, was priced at Rs. 1,09,999 for the 12GB + 256GB, while the 512GB option was listed at Rs. 1,21,999.
Hence, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 are expected to be priced in the country at similar rates as the existing models.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7 Features (Expected)
An earlier report claimed that Samsung is planning to produce three million units of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and two million units of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in 2025. They are expected to carry the yet-unannounced Exynos 2500 chipsets.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is tipped to sport an 8-inch inner screen and a 6.5-inch cover display, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 could get a 6.85-inch main screen and a 4-inch outer panel. For optics, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to have a 50-megapixel primary rear sensor alongside a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 10-megapixel selfie shooter.

West Virginia resort destroyed in overnight fire
MORGAN COUNTY, W.Va. (DC News Now) — A resort in West Virginia burned down late Sunday night in what was described as a “tremendous loss to the Morgan County Community.”
Multiple units responded to a massive fire that broke out at Coolfont Resort in Berkeley Springs. Just after 9:45 p.m. on Jan. 26, a second alarm was requested.

At about 10:20 p.m., the command advised firefighters to start rehab/air unit, according to the Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company.
In the fire’s aftermath Monday morning, it was clear the damage done to the Coolfont Resort was substantial.
The Coolfont has a rich history in the area, dating back to the 1960s, according to its website. It is located at the base of Cacapon Mountain.
Golden Mile Alliance seeks to strengthen Frederick through its dynamic cultural diversity
The main building of the resort completely collapsed in the flames.
The state fire marshal was on the scene Monday afternoon to investigate the cause.
Firefighters from four Morgan County units responded along with support from units in Berkley County, Washington and Frederick Counties in Maryland, Frederick County in Virginia and Fulton County in Pennsylvania.
“It’s an iconic landmark here in Morgan County,” said Happy Rone with the Morgan County Berkeley Spring Chamber of Commerce. “It’s just unimaginable to know that when we got up this morning it was no longer. There are so many memories there of events, of dinners, of lunches, of going to the pool there.”
The resort was popular as a picnic destination, for its dining and lodging and many outdoor, mountain amenities.

Elon Musk gave the cold shoulder to Norway’s $1.4 trillion sovereign wealth CEO Nicolai Tangen after the fund snubbed the Tesla CEO’s pay package—twice
Elon Musk gave the cold shoulder to Norway’s $1.4 trillion sovereign wealth CEO Nicolai Tangen after the fund snubbed the Tesla CEO’s pay package—twice
Tesla CEO Elon Musk declined to dine with Nicolai Tangen, the head of Norway’s Norges Bank Investment Management, which manages a sovereign wealth fund that is one of the carmaker’s largest shareholders.
A series of text messages from October show that Musk canceled plans to attend a dinner at Tangen’s home in Oslo, Norway with the CEOs of Nestle, Ferrari, Novo Nordisk, and DoorDash after the Government Pension Fund Global voted against ratifying his Tesla pay package last June. The fund, which follows a set of strict investment guidelines, chose not to support Musk’s options grant first in 2018, and again a second time in 2024. In its vote rationale, the fund stated that it appreciated the significant value generated under Musk, but it was “concerned about the total size of the award, the structure given performance triggers, dilution, and lack of mitigation of key person risk.”
Musk’s award was previously valued at $56 billion, and Tesla’s increase in market cap has since driven the value to $100 billion. A majority of Tesla shareholders supported the second ratification vote and Musk appealed a ruling rescinding the award earlier this month.
The pay package is the largest executive comp plan in history.
Several month after the fund’s second “against” vote, Musk turned down Tangen’s invitation to the dinner party.
“This would be very difficult and expensive for me to attend,” Musk wrote in text messages first reported by the Norwegian business publication E24. “When I ask you for a favor, which I very rarely do, and you decline, then you should not ask me for one until you’ve done something above nothing to make amends. Friends are as friends do.”
Tangen responded: “Noted and fully understand. As a large shareholder we cheer for you. Good luck with everything.”
The text messages were obtained through the Norwegian equivalent of the Freedom of Information Act. Further text messages show that when Musk learnedprevious text message had become public, he confronted Tangen.
“Did you send my text messages to the press,” Musk asked Tangen.
Tangen informed Musk that as the head of his country’s sovereign wealth fund his text messages were “automatically public record.”
“They have not sent your personal comments, just the part where you said you were not coming to the conference,” Tangen told Musk. “The country is obsessed about you, but this is not reflecting badly on you. Still sorry for any inconvenience.”
Story Continues
Musk sent screenshots of an exchange he had with an unnamed third party who had also accused Tangen of giving the press their text messages. In that conversation, Musk called Tangen a “dangerous politician” who was using the “fund to promote himself.”
NBIM, which is the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, has a roughly 1% stake in Tesla.
Tesla and NBIM did not respond to a request for comment.
Last December, Delaware chief judge Chancellor Kathaleen McCormick upheld her verdict from January voiding Musk’s pay package on grounds the board had not been sufficiently independent when negotiating his compensation. Musk’s package granted him 12 tranches of Tesla stock if the company hit certain milestones for revenue and market capitalization. Since 2019, Tesla’s market cap has risen more than $1 trillion dollars.
Tesla’s current market cap is estimated at $1.3 trillion, after its stock price rose roughly 60% since President Donald Trump won the November election. That rise is a major source of Musk’s wealth, which is roughly $417 billion, according to Forbes.

Oppo Find N5 Compared to Apple iPad Pro M4 to Showcase How Thin the Foldable Will Be
Oppo Find N5 Compared to Apple iPad Pro M4 to Showcase How Thin the Foldable Will Be
Oppo Find N5 is confirmed to go official on Oppo’s home turf next month. The foldable phone is expected to debut in global markets outside China as OnePlus Open 2. As we wait for the formal reveal, a company executive teased the Oppo Find N5’s slim profile on social media by comparing its thickness with the Apple iPad Pro M4. Oppo is calling the upcoming handset as the world’s thinnest foldable, but the actual dimensions of the phone is still under wraps.
Oppo’s Next Foldable Phone Will be Thinner Than an iPad Pro
Billy Zhang (@BillyZhangOPPO), Oppo’s President of Overseas Marketing, dropped a teaser on X showing off the Oppo Find N5 placed next to an iPad Pro M4, which is Apple’s slimmest tablet yet. “We’ve pushed our engineering to ensure an optimal experience, folded or unfolded, and I can’t wait for users to get their hands on it next month,” he wrote. The difference in thickness from front to back is clearly visible in the image.
I can’t believe how slim our latest foldable is.

— Billy Zhang (@BillyZhangOPPO) January 24, 2025
The official didn’t reveal the size of the Oppo Find N5. The iPad Pro (M4) measures 5.1 mm front to back and the Find N5 appears to be half the size of the iPad. The upcoming foldable is likely to be just 4mm thick when unfolded.
Oppo Find N5 launch will take place in February. It is confirmed to come with 50W wireless charging support and will have an IPX9 rating for water resistance. The phone is tipped to launch in global markets as the OnePlus Open 2.
Oppo earlier compared the Find N5 to an iPhone 16 Pro Max. Company’s Chief Product Officer Pete Lau recently claimed that it will come as the world’s “thinnest foldable phone”.
The Oppo Find N5 is expected to feature a 6.85-inch LTPO display with a 2K resolution. It could run on the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset. It is expected to be one of the first foldable to use the chipset. It is also said to pack a 6,000mAh battery and a Hasselblad-backed triple rear camera unit, including a periscope shooter. The phone could offer 80W wired fast charging and support satellite connectivity.

Here are the best vehicles to buy in 2025
Here are the best vehicles to buy in 2025
The Brief
Edmunds’ 2025 Top Rated Awards highlight the best vehicles in six categories.
The 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid wins Best Car, with impressive fuel efficiency and performance.
Tesla Model 3 and Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid lead their electric categories for affordability and range.
Looking to buy a car this year? Edmunds wants to help.
Every year, the Edmunds Top Rated Awards are bestowed on the best vehicles of the year. The winners didn’t just ace their track tests, they distinguished themselves as class leaders in extensive real-world evaluations.
There are six main categories: best car, SUV and truck, and electric versions in the same categories. This year, there are some new champions, while others are repeat winners. The starting prices listed below include destination charges.
Edmunds top rated car: Honda Civic Hybrid
The 2025 Honda Civic isn’t just this year’s best car; it might be the best Honda Civic ever. A big reason why is the newly available hybrid powertrain. The EPA estimates that it helps the hybrid versions of the Civic get up to 49 mpg in combined city/highway driving, a stellar result that Edmunds confirmed in its real-world testing. Pleasingly, this doesn’t come at the expense of power; indeed, the hybrid’s acceleration is on par with that of the sporty Civic Si. All Civics also provide ample passenger space and many easy-to-use technology features.
Starting price for a Civic sedan with the hybrid powertrain: $30,100
2025 Honda Civic Hybrid (Credit: Edmunds)
Edmunds top rated electric car: Tesla Model 3
Tesla made significant updates to its popular Model 3 last year, propelling this electric sedan to the Top Rated podium for 2025. It has affordable pricing, plenty of range, and a more premium and better-assembled cabin than before. It’s well suited for daily commuting as well as longer trips. The Model 3 Long Range All-Wheel Drive version went 338 miles on a single charge in the independent Edmunds EV Range Test. Afghanistan women refugees ready for Melbourne clash
Afghanistan women refugees ready for Melbourne clash
More than three years after fleeing Afghanistan as the Taliban swept to power, a women’s team of refugee cricketers will play an exhibition match in Melbourne on Thursday, hoping it will be a first step on the path to full internationals.
Afghanistan is an established force in the men’s game, having reached the semi-finals of last year’s T20 World Cup co-hosted by the United States and West Indies.
But women’s sport has been disbanded in the country since the Taliban takeover in August, 2021.
The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) had 25 contracted women players in 2020 but most now live in Australia in exile, with others settled in Canada and Britain.
Developing women’s cricket in Afghanistan was no picnic before the Taliban, with miniscule funding, security concerns and conservative attitudes holding back its development.
But there were green shoots as girls’ teams and tournaments sprung up in the provinces after the men’s rise on the international stage.
The ACB made plans for the contracted women’s players to head to the Middle East for their first international tour.
Kabul native Tuba Sangar, a former ACB staffer developing the women’s program, remembers the players showing off their new cricket bats and kits.
“It was an amazing moment for all of us,” she told Reuters on Wednesday.
“Playing cricket in Afghanistan was not easy. But there really was a lot of hope that we could develop and compete internationally.”
Months later, the players were dumping their cricket gear in a panic as the Taliban stormed Kabul.
One teenage player, Feroza Afghan, burnt her kit and spent three months travelling overland with family members before crossing into Pakistan, having to negotiate more than a dozen internal checkpoints.
Sangar also left in a hurry with other female staff working at the ACB. She resettled in Canada via Kuwait and is now a community support worker for a non-profit in Ontario province.
Australia played a big role in helping the women’s cricketers evacuate along with football players and other athletes.
The government issued humanitarian visas and arranged for them to board planes out of Kabul.
Cricket Australia has facilitated Thursday’s match at the Junction Oval in Melbourne which has the Afghanistan XI playing a team arranged by Cricket Without Borders, a non-profit body supporting the women’s game.
Captained by Nahida Sapan, it will be the first time the Afghan women have competed as a team since leaving the nation.
Though cricket’s global governing body, the International Cricket Council, recognises Afghanistan as a full member and funds its cricket board, the exiled women remain unfunded.
The Australia-based cricketers play for local clubs.
Cricket Australia boss Nick Hockley said this week he hopes the Afghan women can play more games as a team and eventually represent the country on the international stage.
CA will not schedule international matches against the men’s team, though, on moral grounds, citing “deteriorating human rights” for women and girls in Afghanistan.
The policy has drawn accusations of hypocrisy given Australia will play Afghanistan at World Cups and other major global tournaments when prestigious trophies are at stake.
CA’s stance also leaves Sangar cold.
“I believe that cricket should not suffer for politics,” she said.
“I don’t believe that’s the right decision.
“If you ask any Afghanistan woman how they got into cricket, they will say it was from watching the men and being inspired.”

Shares of LVMH dropped 5% on Wednesday after slightly better-than-expected annual results from the world’s largest luxury company threw doubt over a broader recovery in the luxury sector.
The owner of brands including Louis Vuitton, Moët & Chandon and Hennessy posted revenues of 84.68 billion euros ($88.27 billion) for 2024, exceeding the 84.38 billion euros forecast by LSEG analysts and equating to organic growth of 1% versus the previous year.
Shares were down 5.26% by 8:24 a.m. London time.
Investors have been looking for further confirmation of a recovery in the luxury sector after Cartier owner Richemont reported its “highest ever” quarterly sales figure over the festive shopping *******. However, declining sales in LVMH’s critical fashion and leather goods and wines and spirits segments pointed to continued pressure within the group.
LVMH on Tuesday attributed its revenue growth to solid demand within its selective retailing division — which includes retailer Sephora — and perfume and cosmetics. Growth was also broadly driven by consumers in the U.S., Europe and Japan, while the wider Asia Pacific region — and notably China — lagged.
The French luxury goods giant is seen as a bellwether for the wider luxury industry, which has faced significant pressure over recent years amid declining China sales and broader macroeconomic headwinds.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated shortly.

Czech central bank governor to present plan to hold reserves in bitcoin, FT reports
Czech central bank governor to present plan to hold reserves in bitcoin, FT reports
(Reuters) – Czech National Bank Governor Ales Michl said that he will present a plan to the central bank’s board to invest in bitcoin and added that it was “very likely” the bank would cut interest rates by 25 basis points next week, according to an interview published by the Financial Times on Wednesday.
Michl said he will present the plan to the board on Thursday, and if approved, the bank could eventually hold as much as 5% of its 140 billion euro ($146.13 billion) reserves in bitcoin, according to the FT.
“For the diversification of our assets, bitcoin seems good,” he said.
He added that bitcoin would trend higher even without the backing of U.S. President Donald Trump since it’s an alternative investment for many people.
Bitcoin hit a record high earlier this month when Trump, who has pledged to be a “crypto president,” was sworn in.
It has more than doubled in value in 2024, driven by the U.S. market regulator’s approval for exchange-traded funds tied to its spot price, and optimism over easing regulatory hurdles under Trump.
Michl, too, highlighted wider investor interest in bitcoin since BlackRock and other firms last year launched bitcoin exchange traded funds, according to the FT.

Restoration works of the farm at Greece’s former royal estate near Athens are rapidly progressing and soon, the museum building connected to the estate’s farm life will be completed, the Greek Ministry of Culture announced.
Selected wooden and metallic objects, along with pieces of historic agricultural machinery are being preserved in order to become part of the permanent collections in the museum building (a former cowshed), dedicated to the agricultural production of the Tatoi estate, the ministry said in a statement. The metallic objects include signs with animal names, watering objects and silos. Agricultural tools include milk jars, a sickle, a sieve and a demijohn. The wooden objects, including tools and agricultural machinery, were found inside the farm buildings. Among them are a tractor, oak barrels and a wine case.

Lina Mendoni, the Greek Minister of Culture said that the restoration project at the estate’s farm is expected to be completed within 2025, adding that the objects being preserved along with the agricultural machinery were used in order to keep the estate’s owners self-sufficient. “The quantity [of agricultural products] produced was enough to allow them to be sold within and out of Greece,” Mendoni said. “Some examples are the butter and milk of Tatoi but also the varieties of wines from the royal vineyards. The Ministry of Culture has registered the names and brands of the estate’s products, in order to re-use them in the new food and hospitality services,” she added. According to the Greek Ministry of Culture, both the wooden and the metallic objects are in a bad condition, mostly because of their long-term storage under unsuitable conditions.
Restoration projects at the estate include the creation of museum buildings as well as leisure center facilities at a cost of several million. Most of the buildings have fallen into disrepair after decades of abandonment and neglect.

The Tatoi estate covers an enormous total area of 4,500 hectares, which is approximately 45 million square meters.
It was first owned by the Greek royal family in the 1870s. Since then, it has endured numerous changes of ownership and usage, following the turbulent political life of the country during the late 19th and the 20th century.
Located on a slope of Mount Parnitha, the estate lies 27 kilometers (16 miles) from downtown Athens, in an area covered by woods, with rivers and abundant wildlife.
The Palace complex also includes a large number of buildings which all served different purposes for the royal family while they lived there.
Originally designed as a summer retreat for the family, it later became the permanent residence of the Greek royals, who found its premises more private compared to the official Royal Palace in downtown Athens.
It was Greece’s King George I who originally had the idea of establishing a summer retreat for his family.

Molon Lave: The Ancient Greek Phrase of Defiance Turned Global Marketing Tool
Molon Lave: The Ancient Greek Phrase of Defiance Turned Global Marketing Tool

It was in 480 BC during the second Persian invasion of Greece, when King Leonidas of Sparta ahead of the legendary Battle of Thermopylae responded by the phrase “Molon Lave” (‘Come and Take Them’ in ancient Greek) to Persian King Xerxes’ demand that the Spartan army lay down their weapons and surrender to his army. The outnumbered Greeks were eventually annihilated, though they held Thermopylae for three days and inflicted serious damage to the Persians, while delaying them from reaching Athens.
That’s how the story ended back then. But little did King Leonidas know that over 2,500 years later, his “Molon Lave” phrase (also spelled “Molon Labe” by many) would not only become immortalized through the centuries but moreover, it would thrive as a global marketing tool -linked to the ***** of weapons, wine, olive oil, expensive watches and even cigars.
King Leonidas I reigned the ancient city-state of Sparta, a warrior society, from 489 to 480 BC. Subjected to military drills since early manhood, the Spartans had become one of the most feared and formidable military forces in the ancient Greek world, attaining legendary status in their wars against Persia. At the height of Sparta’s power, between the 6th and 4th centuries BC, according to Peter Connolly, a British historian and the scholar of the ancient world, other Greeks commonly accepted that “one Spartan was worth several men of any other state.”
“The appeal of Molon Lave comes from its Spartan origins,” Effie Delimarkos-Fletcher, a Greek-American communications expert and marketing strategist tells Greek Reporter. “Spartans themselves have come to symbolize power, strength, resolve, and defiance, which was catapulted into the mainstream with the debut movie of ‘300.’ As a result, aligning with the phrase “Molon Lave” is a distinct way for a brand to signal strength and prowess in an area worth defending.”
Moreover, there are few other phrases like “Molon Lave,” where two single, short words are able to convey all that, perhaps the most famous military last stand of all time, embodies -defiance, strength and resolve. Spartans were expected to be men of few words, famous for using “laconic phrases,” named after Laconia, the region of Greece, including the city of Sparta, whose ancient inhabitants had a reputation for verbal austerity. A laconic phrase was used for efficiency (as during military training and operations), for emphasis or to deflate a pompous speaker.

Military, the industry where Molon Lave has the largest appeal as a brand
From tactical patches and other military paraphernalia sold online, to assault rifles sold in stores across the United States, the phrase “Molon Lave” graces thousands of military-related products.
According to Delimarkos-Fletcher, Molon Lave and its English translation “Come and Take Them” has been present in the country’s early DNA as it is said to have been used as far back as the Revolutionary War. Even so, it is better known for its connection to the Texas Revolutionary War, when the phrase was stitched onto a flag that has come to be associated with the defiant spirit of the state. In more recent times, many U.S.-based militia groups and paramilitary organizations have taken the phrase “Molon Lave,” and often the depiction of a Spartan helmet, signaling defiance for gun regulations.
“Because Molon Lave has been adopted by militia-type groups in the United States, securing the Molon Lave trademark is done by companies looking to appeal to that target,” Delimarkos-Fletcher says.
And that’s exactly what at least one US.-based company had done. A short Greek Reporter investigation revealed that, while there are hundreds of knives and weapons with the phrase “Molon Lave” appearing on them in different variations, in 2015 this one company has gone as far as to apply for and successfully register a year later a trademark for the original Molon Lave phrase in Greek (ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ) for one of its knives selection. The company, advertises the knives on its website by stating “It takes a bold individual to make a statement of defiance like ‘Come and Take Them (Molon Labe),’ we provide the knives that re-enforce the bravado.”
But can a company apply and secure a trademark for the use of a common, ancient phrase like Molon Lave, that seems almost free for anyone to use?
According to Pamela Koslyn, a Los Angeles-based attorney specializing in intellectual property law, U.S. legislation allows a company to successfully apply for a trademark for a brand new phrase, or an “ancient” phrase or an invented word/phrase, with the age and origin of the phrase being irrelevant.
“A trademark isn’t a monopoly on a phrase, it’s a source identifier of some phrase associated with some goods or services. Like knives. Or olive oil. Or wine. These are all actual “live or pending marks of Molon Lave…There’s also a ******** textile seller called Molon Lave,” Koslyn tells Greek Reporter. “If a user has a registered trademark on a phrase in a particular class, e.g. knives, that means the user own the exclusive right to use their mark in association with their goods or services and can theoretically successfully sue and enjoin any competitor who infringes those rights by using the same or confusingly similar mark for the same or confusingly similar goods or services.”
Still, Koslyn notes, that one in two trademark applications to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) fail not only because they’re not viable or available but moreover because of the complexity of the law and the time needed to find out if an application has been approved by USPTO -a process that could take months if not years.

The famous ancient Greek phrase many want to own
But few actually register the phrase in order to enhance their branding or make their products stand out more. Given the enormous competition among companies to win the hearts of consumers, proper branding and marketing could mean the difference between life and death for a company. And given its global fame, that’s exactly what “Molon Lave” does.
Nowhere is this more obvious than in the United States, the beating heart of global consumerism. A family-owned farm winery in Virginia was established in 2009 under the name “Molon Lave.” Aside from informing its customers that it also produces “kokkineli,” a traditional Greek style rose, the winery fully explains on its website the origins of its name, noting that “‘Molon Lave’ is a phrase that has inspired throughout the centuries a sense of dignity and pride, and a unique perception of life.”
Another Florida-based company named “Molon Labe” is selling high-quality cigars, spirits and coffee, as with most other businesses, also using a Spartan helmet on its logo. Moreover, the cigars are wrapped in paper bearing the phrase in Greek. The company on its website gives no explanation as to why it chose the specific name.
A consumer browsing the handmade watches of the ***-based company. Credit: Greek Reporter
Greek Reporter’s investigation also found a watch company with the name “Molon Labe” based in the ***, selling handmade, military watches inspired by the phrase, with some having a price tag of over $1,500. There’s also a global security company named “Molon Lave,” an information technology service activity company in the *** and a gym in Cyprus, featuring on its premises the bust of a muscular Spartan soldier alongside the “Molon Lave” phrase, which is showcased in ancient Greek type. The list goes on.
With a fortitude reminiscent of the very people it once represented, the phrase “Molon Lave” survived to this day as one of the few expressions that so efficiently evoke an immediate connection not only to power but also to Greece.
It is no wonder the phrase has also been adopted as the name of a “small, Greek authentic restaurant” in Ontario, Canada, which on its website says that it’s “based on the Spartan epic saying Molon Lave, which means ‘Come and Get Them,’” and has a mission “to celebrate and share Greek cuisine and culture.”
At the same time, a thriving Greek olive oil brand named “Molon Lave” based in Sparta, the place where King Leonidas and his Spartan warriors once lived, is probably one of the more successful examples using the phrase as a marketing tool.
Delimarkos-Fletcher says many using the phrase may not even know its true origins so it is refreshing to see Greek-related businesses reclaiming Molon Lave as they “seek to evoke a connection to the best known story of Greek strength and prowess.”
“Other brands are just using ‘Molon Lave’ as shorthand for having something powerful enough that others want for their own,” Delimarkos-Fletcher tells Greek Reporter.
