  1. Trump tariffs rattle Wall Street — here’s what the movers and shakers are talking about Trump tariffs rattle Wall Street — here’s what the movers and shakers are talking about Trump the Tariff Man has struck, unsettling a ginned up Wall Street that had expected 2025 to be a year of strong economic growth and further big gains for hot AI trades such as darlings Nvidia (NVDA) and Microsoft (MSFT). The Trump administration levied tariffs of 25% on Canada and Mexico and 10% on China on Saturday, citing issues like fentanyl and ******** immigration. Duties on all three economic powerhouses will kick in on February 4. “WILL THERE BE SOME PAIN? YES, MAYBE (AND MAYBE NOT!). BUT WE WILL MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND IT WILL ALL BE WORTH THE PRICE THAT MUST BE PAID,” President Trump warned in a Truth Social post on Sunday. Reactions across Wall Street began to trickle in on Sunday, and it would appear economists and strategists agree on Trump’s pain shout-out. Here are some of the most actionable insights from the Street that have crossed my inbox so far. “Our economists expect that fully implemented tariffs would have meaningful consequences. A recession in Mexico becomes the base case. US Inflation could be 0.3% to 0.6% higher vs baseline over the next 3-4 months (putting headline personal consumption expenditures inflation at 2.9% to 3.2%) and US growth could be -0.7% to -1.1% lower versus baseline over the next 3-4 quarters (putting real GDP growth at 1.2% to 1.6%). We see a similar or larger growth drag than the 100 basis point hit to Asia and China’s growth in 2018-19. Full implemented tariffs with staying power don’t appear to be in the price of key markets: A bullish scenario for US Treasury duration, as weaker growth expectations increase demand beyond short maturities; meaningful US Dollar strength relative to Peso & ********* Dollar; US equities may come under pressure, and services should outperform consumer goods.” Watch: What Morgan Stanley’s CEO sees for the 2025 M&A market “US growth is likely to take a hit as countries move away from US exports, investment falls, and employment declines. Federal receipts should increase, all else equal; some research estimates $1 trillion over the next decade. Our macroeconomic teams have estimated a 40 basis point increase in inflation and a 40 basis point drag on growth in the back half of the year.” “Timing of Trump’s tariff announcement likely offended both ******** government and people because the country is still on ******** New Year holiday. Moreover, news of the tariff slap arrived in China in the morning of February 2, coinciding with this lunar year’s 5th day, which is the day for most ******** to worship their God of Wealth with offerings and wishes. Unfortunately, Trump stole the attention with his wealth-destructing tariffs, an inauspicious development indeed. This first 10% tariff seems at least aimed to gain an upper hand in the negotiation on TikTok, or force Beijing to the table if negotiation hasn’t started.” Story Continues “Many investors we’ve spoken with continue to feel recent rhetoric may be a negotiation tactic given timing has been pushed out since Inauguration Day and timing was briefly pushed to 3/1 before being reversed. Implications to demand destruction longer-term always remains a key concern. Among our coverage, we see the biggest financial risk to Alcoa (AA), GrafTech International (EAF) and Cleveland Cliffs (CLF). On AA, ~40% of Alcoa’s operating smelter capacity is in Canada (vs. only 13% in the US) and ~70% of that production is shipped to the US. Management has indicated it would take 1-2 quarters for trade flows to reshuffle, which would have material implications on near-term earnings. On EAF, its Mexico-based Monterrey facility is the primary source of supply for its US and North America-based customers, likely driving customers to shift to cheaper US-based production (i.e., ******/Resonac) and/or India imports, which have been on the rise as of recent. If US graphite electrode pricing were to move high enough (and stay sticky) this could incentivize GrafTech to restart its US-based St.Mary’s facility, but this is a high-cost facility and the underlying demand environment remains sluggish. On CLF, we note risk to its newly acquired Canada exposure given 25-40% of SteelCase’s revenues (FY22-1H24) were largely generated in the US.” “For the near term, we expect Beijing to impose only symbolic tariff increases (if any) on China’s imports from the US. We also expect China’s informal retaliation (such as directing commodity purchases away from the US) to be light as Beijing continues to explore a broader deal with Trump. Could Beijing mollify Trump with actions on fentanyl? The biggest US complaint with Beijing is that ******** chemical companies are the main source of precursors for fentanyl products, which are then produced in Mexico and third countries. US-China cooperation on fentanyl has improved since the November 2023 Biden-Xi summit, though Beijing could do more to satisfy US concerns with a tougher crackdown on firms exporting to Mexico. Beijing will likely take some specific actions in this regard in coming months, while promising to take stronger measures as a part of a potential US-China deal. What about the broader outlook on US-China trade tensions? We continue to hold a base case that Trump will end up imposing additional tariffs on China imports beyond this initial 10%. These may wait for the outcome of trade policy reviews due on April 1, but of course could come sooner (if Trump becomes impatient) or later (if he explores a US-China trade deal). Trump’s fondness for tariffs, the optics of a very large deficit with China, and the domestic politics of targeting China all make it unlikely that he stops here. We do not dismiss the possibility of a US-China trade deal, though see the political bar as fairly high, especially in this first year of Trump 2.0.” This embedded content is not available in your region. 4. 160,000 people protest against far-right party in Berlin 160,000 people protest against far-right party in Berlin Tens of thousands of people took to the streets of Berlin to protest what they see as a breach of a taboo in post-war ******* politics. The protests came after some parties voted alongside the far-right party, Alternative for Germany (AfD), over a non-binding resolution on immigration last week. Christian Democratic Union (CDU) leader Friedrich Merz, who is tipped to be Germany’s next chancellor, had tried to rely on support from AfD twice last week, including for a bill aimed at curbing immigration. The move sparked anger among many, with organisers of the demonstration saying people had turned out to condemn what they see as a breach of the country’s agreement not to work with the far right at the national level. The demonstrations come three weeks before national elections and follow similar protests across Germany on Saturday. Police estimate that about 160,000 people came out to protest on Sunday. The rally began just outside the Bundestag, Germany’s parliament building and moved on towards the CDU’s headquarters. Protester Anna Schwarz, 34, told AFP she was joining a political rally for the first because “we can no longer avert our gaze”. “(We want to) make as much noise as possible to call for the self-described ‘democratic’ parties to protect this democracy,” she said. The CDU is leading in the polls ahead of Germany’s snap election this month. The AfD is currently polling in second place, although Merz has ruled out any kind of coalition with them. On Wednesday, a non-binding motion over changes to immigration law passed through Germany’s parliament. Two days later, a bill aimed at reducing immigration numbers and family reunion rights was rejected by Germany’s parliament by 350 votes to 338. The bill was put forward by the CDU and backed by the far-right. The strategy was widely condemned, including by Merz’s predecessor as CDU leader and former chancellor Angela Merkel, who accused him of turning his back on a previous pledge not to work with AfD in the Bundestag. Merz defended his actions as “necessary” and said he had not sought the party’s support. “A right decision doesn’t become wrong just because the wrong people agree to it,” he said last week. 6. Two top security officials at USAID placed on leave, sources say Two top security officials at USAID placed on leave, sources say Two top security officials at the U.S. Agency for International Development have been placed on administrative leave, the latest in a series of suspensions and layoffs at the American government’s primary humanitarian aid agency. President Trump is considering dramatic changes to USAID, as advisers examine where there’s overlap with other agencies or where its spending runs counter to the president’s stances. USAID Director for Security John Vorhees and Deputy Director for Security Brian McGill were put on leave Saturday night, two sources confirmed to CBS News. Two sources told the Associated Press that move came after the two officials refused to allow personnel from the Elon Musk-run Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to access classified material in restricted areas. DOGE spokesperson Katie Miller did not respond to requests for comment, but did repost the AP article on X with the comment, “No classified material was accessed without proper security clearances.” Vice President JD Vance is in charge of figuring out next steps for USAID reform, per one person familiar with Trump’s decision. A spokesperson for Vance declined to comment. No executive order was imminent — officials are still in the planning phase, sources said last week. But the president is interested in reforming the agency, they said. One option is to possibly fold it into the State Department, but other possibilities are on the table, two sources told CBS News. Republican Rep. Brian Mast, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which provides oversight of the State Department, said Sunday on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” that USAID is “likely going to be rolled more closely under Secretary Rubio.” USAID already reports to the Secretary of State but the Trump administration is looking at ways to combine it or fold it into the State Department. Mast did not detail what specific changes will be made but indicated that he intends to initiate changes via Congress as well. USAID was established in 1961 by an act of Congress. “I would be absolutely for, if that’s the path we go down, removing USAID as a separate department, and having it fall under whether the other parts of the United States, Department of State, because of its failure,” Mast claimed on “Face the Nation.” Margaret Brennan Margaret Brennan is moderator of “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.” She is also the Network’s chief foreign affairs correspondent based in Washington, D.C. and a contributing correspondent to “60 Minutes.” Source link #top #security #officials #USAID #leave #sources Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  7. Vance Confronted About Claim That Biden Banned White Air Traffic Controllers Vance Confronted About Claim That Biden Banned White Air Traffic Controllers Vice President J.D. Vance was cornered on Fox News Sunday after he claimed that his Democratic predecessors ordered the Federal Aviation Administration “not to hire” white people. Speaking with host Maria Bartiromo on this weekend’s broadcast of Sunday Morning Futures, Vance claimed that Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama prevented white candidates from seeking air traffic controller jobs with the government. “There have been a number of lawsuits from people who would like to become air traffic controllers against the Obama and Biden administration, who basically said, ‘We were told not even to apply because of the color of our skin,’ because they were white people.” He added, “Under the DEI regime of the Biden administration, they weren’t welcome. It means that we don’t have the best and the brightest sometimes in these positions.” Vance was echoing claims from his boss Donald Trump and other Republicans that DEI hiring practices were ultimately responsible for the tragic plane ****** that claimed 67 lives in D.C. last week. But Bartiromo jumped in, noting, “We knew for years that we had a shortage at air traffic control.” Vance then went on, “Well, part of the reason why we had a shortage in air traffic control is because we were telling our air traffic controllers not to hire people because of the color of their skin. That is a scandal. And it is a scandal, thankfully, that has stopped under the leadership of Donald Trump.” Unfortunately for Vance, Bartiromo then pressed him further on his claims, asking, “Do you have any evidence that any of those hires that were there at the control Wednesday night were DEI hires.” He didn’t. “This is not saying that the person who was at the controls is a DEI hire, but let’s just say, first of all, we should investigate everything,” he said, adding, “there is a very direct connection between the policies of the last administration and short-staffed air traffic controllers. That has to stop.” Source link #Vance #Confronted #Claim #Biden #Banned #White #Air #Traffic #Controllers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. Education Department employees placed on leave after DEI training Education Department employees placed on leave after DEI training Dozens of employees who attended a diversity training course encouraged by former Education Secretary Betsy DeVos during President Donald Trump’s first administration have been placed on paid leave as part of Trump’s targeting of DEI programs, a union official told NBC News. Sheria Smith, president of American Federation of Government Employees Local 252, which represents hundreds of Education Department employees, told NBC News that at least 55 employees were placed on leave as of Friday evening and that she expected the number to grow as she learns more. The affected workers included a public affairs specialist, civil rights attorneys, program manager analysts; loan regulators and employees working to ensure special needs children with individualized education programs get necessary accommodations from schools. A letter to the affected employees obtained by NBC News said they would continue to receive their full salaries and benefits and would not be required or expected to do any work-related tasks or to come into the office during the leave. It also said their email access would be suspended. “It looks like they’re entrapping people, because they encouraged people to take these trainings … and are now maybe using these trainings as a basis to put them on administrative leave,” Smith said. Smith added that she is worried Trump, who has said he wants to eliminate the Department of Education, is hoping “employees will eliminate themselves.” “I think it is shock and awe. They’re trying to send us emails that make no sense and are super confusing, to intimidate us or to make us run scared so we quit,” Smith said. “They’re trying to make employees feel like they will soon get fired. And at the same time, they are trying to entice employees with an offer to pay them eight months salary if they just resigned,” Smith added. “So it seemsit as if you’re choosing between affirmatively resigning, where they’re saying that you might possibly get paid eight months salary and benefits, or eventually getting fired.” Smith and Brittany Holder, a spokeswoman for the American Federation of Government Employees, believe hundreds of employees attended the Diversity Change Agent trainings. An email shared with NBC News shows the department in 2019 had a goal of training 400 employees under this program. In the email shared with NBC News, which was sent during Trump’s first term, a human resources official with the Department of Education wrote to employees encouraging them to take a two-day, voluntary course as part of the agency’s “Diversity Change Agent” training in March 2019. The email said “We have 25 seats available for this course. The Department’s strategic and comprehensive approach to equipping staff with skills in leading a diverse workforce includes the Diversity Change Agent Program. Graduates of this course are expected to serve as role models, spending some of their official duty time performing activities designed to improve the Education Department’s capacity to attract and retain a diverse workforce. This effort is essential to sustaining a clear and effective Department-wide program.” The email also said, “Thank you for helping us move toward achieving the goal of 400 Diversity Change Agents ED-wide. Your positive actions are the catalyst on our journey to achieving ED’s diversity and inclusion objectives.” Subodh Chandra, a civil rights lawyer who is representing one of the employees placed on paid leave in the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights, told NBC News that his client was appointed to the employment, engagement and diversity and inclusion council formed during Trump’s first term by his political appointees, Kimberly Richey and Kenneth Marcus. Chandra said his client is a West Point graduate, an army veteran, and a former prosecutor who is confused about being placed on leave. “My client, a veteran, did nothing to violate any executive order. Nor did any of his similarly situated colleagues. He doesn’t even run a “DEIA” project. He was only a member of an inactive committee on which he was appointed by Trump’s own political appointees from the first term,” Chandra said. Overall, dozens of workers at the Department of Education and Energy who did not specifically work in diversity, equity and inclusion roles have been placed on paid leave as part of Trump’s effort to eliminate DEI initiatives throughout the federal government, according to Smith and Holder. Holder said at the Department of Education, the union believes there were only two employees in specific DEIA roles and both of those workers were placed on leave within days of Trump taking office. Then, this past Wednesday evening, at least two more employees who attended the diversity training were placed on leave. Then on Friday evening dozens of employees who attended the diversity trainings were informed via email that they were being put on leave. Holder said separately, that at least 14 employees at the Department of Energy were put on paid leave as part of Trump’s executive order targeting DEIA programs. She said only three of the employees had titles specifically related to diversity and inclusion positions and that the others had jobs that included tasks like encouraging veterans to work for the Energy Department as well as working with employee survey data to make workplaces better. Many of the positions were part of the “culture office” but most did not work on DEIA programs. “People are worried they are going to lose their jobs,” Holder said. “People are worried and angry.” A spokesperson for the Education Department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. 12. Battlefield’s Community Test Program Will be Revealed Tomorrow Battlefield’s Community Test Program Will be Revealed Tomorrow · · February 2, 2025 DICE and EA have announced that the first details on the next Battlefield’s community test program will be revealed tomorrow. The announcement was posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) account, where it was said, “Tune in tomorrow at 5PM CET / 8AM PDT for more on the upcoming #Battlefield community testing program.” Last week, Insider Gaming exclusively reported that Battlefield playtests were once again ramping up to test the multiplayer and Battle Royale experiences of the game. While details on what will be announced tomorrow are incredibly slim, several sources have suggested that we’ll get our first look at pre-alpha gameplay of the game (abliet, only a few seconds). Insider Gaming also understands that playtests for the next Battlefield title have been a weekly occurrence for months, with DICE and the other Battlefield studios relentlessly gaining player feedback; something they didn’t do for Battlefield 2042. From small feedback sessions to large-scale player tests, Battlefield is now taking the much-needed “player first” approach to ensure that the next Battlefield game is a success, with the teams leaning from its mistakes of the series’ past couple of installments. 13. Manchester United ‘trying everything’ to sign players, says Ruben Amorim Manchester United ‘trying everything’ to sign players, says Ruben Amorim United head into the final day of the transfer window with speculation that they will further strengthen Amorim’s squad, even though insiders are playing the prospect down. Deals for Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel and Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku are regarded as unlikely. Although, after spending £25m on Lecce defender Patrick Dorgu and signing Arsenal youngster Ayden Heaven in the last 48 hours, it is not entirely clear whether the club would have to sell players in order to fund further signings. “We are trying everything to improve the team without making the mistakes of the past and also trying to balance the urgency of the moment,” said Amorim. “We know all of the aspects of our club in the moment but we are trying everything. “This market is really hard on clubs to make some deals. I want to improve the team so badly. I know what the team needs. Sometimes it’s possible, sometimes it’s not. When the window closes we will see the players that we have.” It is evident United need something to give them a lift. They have now lost five of their last six Premier League home games under Amorim. Incredibly, that means Amorim has lost more league games at Old Trafford than Jose Mourinho (four) in two-and-a-half years as United manager, and as many as Louis van Gaal (five) in his two seasons. Yet there is trepidation about United’s ability in the transfer market. Antony, signed from Ajax for £81.3m, has already joined Real Betis on loan. Tyrell Malacia, who cost £13m in 2022, also looks set for a move away from Old Trafford. Neither has proved to be value for money and there are plenty of others in Amorim’s squad about whom the same accusation could be levelled, which is why the club’s Profit and Sustainability position has repeatedly been described as “tight”. 17. Is Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) the Best Dividend Stock on Robinhood? Is Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) the Best Dividend Stock on Robinhood? We recently published a list of Top 10 Best Dividend Stocks on Robinhood. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ)) stands against other top best dividend stocks on Robinhood. The start of 2020 marked a turning point for retail trading, driven by increased market volatility, stay-at-home orders, and commission-free trading across platforms, which led to a surge in activity and a rise in new traders. Many of these new traders, particularly in their 20s and 30s, found the stock market more accessible than ever, as high prices had previously kept them from participating. With sports events canceled, many turned to stock trading as a replacement for sports betting. As stock prices hit historic lows, younger investors flocked to platforms like Robinhood. Founded in 2013 by Vladimir Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, Robinhood quickly became a fintech favorite. The app, which pioneered commission-free trading, amassed 13 million user accounts and gained significant brand recognition, surpassing legacy brokerages like Charles Schwab and Fidelity, as well as app-first competitors like Webull and Dough. According to analysts, Robinhood has significant growth potential, particularly if it can encourage customers who have opened accounts to invest larger sums of money on the platform. Piper Sandler analyst Patrick Moley highlighted that while 10% of US adults have a funded account with Robinhood, the company currently controls less than 0.3% of the $65 trillion in retail assets in the US As of June 2024, Robinhood has facilitated over $200 million in asset transfer and retirement account contribution matches for its customers. This initiative helped the company secure over $13 billion in net deposits during the second quarter, with assets under custody reaching a record $140 billion—an increase of 57% from the previous year. Additionally, retirement assets more than doubled, nearing $9 billion. Though Robinhood experienced significant growth in its customer base during the COVID-19 pandemic, as people stayed home and invested in their government stimulus checks, years later, the platform has continued to attract even more customers, many of whom have become more knowledgeable and now expect advanced tools, which Robinhood has adapted to offer. Robinhood has been focusing on organic growth by implementing strategies such as deposit matches and marketing initiatives, as well as investing in both its current operations and new ventures. Additionally, the company has been using mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to accelerate its business expansion. Story Continues In addition to technological improvements, shifts in asset classes and market structure have also played a role in the emergence of new investment products. One of the most notable innovations in 2024 was the introduction of event contracts, especially those based on elections. In addition, many other brokerages, fintech firms, and financial institutions introduced a wide range of new products that reshaped how retail investors could manage their investments, all while generating profits. The shift began in January when the Securities and Exchange Commission approved spot bitcoin (BTCUSD) exchange-traded funds. This decision enabled retail investors to gain cryptocurrency exposure through their brokerage accounts, eliminating the need to open digital wallets for direct crypto purchases. From Monday, distillers and brewers will be required to pay $104.31 per litre of alcohol to the taxman, with the Federal Government raking in $8 billion annually in beer and spirit taxes. As Australians enter an election year, *********** Hotels Association WA chief executive Bradley Woods said high cost of living meant the hidden tax increases made it harder for many to afford a social beer or drink. “Western Australia’s pubs, bars, and taverns are vital social and economic hubs, but are unfairly impacted by an outdated tax system that are driving up costs for venues and consumers alike,” Mr Woods said. “The hospitality industry needs relief. That’s why we are calling for a 40 per cent discount and a freeze on excise rates for beer and spirits sold on-premise in licensed venues. This measure would support the industry and ensure Australians can continue to enjoy responsible socialising without excessive costs. “It’s time to tell your federal election candidates that enough is enough. Australians deserve a fair go, and that means a taxation system that supports rather than punishes social venues.” The calls were echoed by Spirits & Cocktails Australia chief executive Greg Holland, who said the excise had climbed by 20 per cent on pre-pandemic prices. 20. How Skepticism Is Hurting Your Finances (and How To Change Your Outlook) How Skepticism Is Hurting Your Finances (and How To Change Your Outlook) ©Ramit Sethi It’s common for people to be skeptical when it comes to their money. In fact, according to a 2023 Gallup survey, almost 50% of the population aren’t even confident their money is safe in a bank. Research from the same year conducted by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) supported this fact. Their polling showed that only 39% of Americans have faith in the financial system. For You: I’m a Financial Advisor: 10 Most Awesome Things You Can Do for Your Finances in 2025 Find Out: 4 Things You Must Do When Your Savings Reach $50,000 Not only are Americans skeptical about money, but they also experience uncertainty in their financial lives. Of the people surveyed in a 2024 Wells Fargo study, 43% have a scarcity mindset, meaning they focus on what they don’t have. This can also exacerbate financial skepticism, because if you’re worried you don’t have enough or you’re concerned about paying your bills, you’re less likely to be curious about ways to build your financial future. While a healthy amount of skepticism is good to avoid scams and be wary of financial products that seem too good to be true, it can also be a hindrance, according to a recent newsletter by money expert and New York Times best-selling author Ramit Sethi. Here’s how he said your mindset affects your money. Sethi opened his newsletter writing about a time when he worked in San Francisco with intelligent colleagues who regularly mocked “outdated” marketing methods. They were skeptical of any company that used ads, for example, that couldn’t be strategically tracked — like billboards in Times Square. However, Sethi had a healthy sense of curiosity. He did not immediately dismiss traditional marketing or traditional financial advice. By being curious and open to learning, Sethi explained, he was able to build an incredibly successful business. He learned many different types of marketing methods and figured out what worked and what wouldn’t for his business. This commitment to learning helped him to build the company he has today. If, like Sethi’s colleagues, you tend to approach finances with skepticism first, you may be missing out on opportunities and lessons that could help you succeed. Check Out: 8 Must-Read Personal Finance Books of 2024 for a Fresh Start in 2025 Sethi called his approach the “D-to-C” principle, which stands for “disparagement to curiosity.” So, instead of instantly mocking an idea and thinking that it’s dumb or would never work, Sethi instead embraces curiosity. He recommended asking good questions, learning from experts and staying curious. Story Continues Sethi isn’t the only expert voice encouraging curiosity. In fact, according to a 2022 BBC article that reviewed several studies about curiosity, this trait can actually predict how successful a student will be academically. Curiosity is even a better predictor of success than a student’s IQ. Curiosity in personal finance might look like researching concepts you don’t understand or speaking to someone about their investments that might be unfamiliar to you, like crypto. Just as skepticism can hurt your finances, curiosity can help them. When you’re curious about money, you’re more open to learning new things, hearing ideas and trying out different methods to pay off debt or invest. Surrounding yourself with other people who are curious can also help you to cultivate a growth mindset, which can set you up for financial independence later in life. 22. This month may bring the Powerbeats Pro 2 and a new party invitation service for iCloud This month may bring the Powerbeats Pro 2 and a new party invitation service for iCloud The long-awaited Powerbeats Pro 2 could make their official debut in little more than a week from now. In the Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman reports that sources have told him the $250 earbuds will arrive on February 11 and boast heart-rate monitoring on top of upgrades like an H2 chip and improvements to noise cancellation. We should also see some new colors, like orange, according to Gurman. Beats teased the upcoming launch of the Powerbeats Pro 2 back in September, revealing only that they’d drop in 2025. Apple is also reportedly working on a new event invitation service for iCloud that sounds like it could rival the likes of Partiful and Calendly. The details are scant, but Gurman reports that the iCloud-based service code-named Confetti “offers a new way to invite people to parties, functions and meetings.” It could be introduced as soon as this week, he notes. Apple recently made some updates to its Calendar app with the rollout of iOS 18, like a new month overview and finally tying in Reminders. Confetti integration could add another convenient planning feature. 23. Holly Willoughby’s Celebrity Bear Hunt and Olly Alexander’s album Holly Willoughby’s Celebrity Bear Hunt and Olly Alexander’s album Getty Images This week, Holly Willoughby and Bear Grylls head to the wilds of Costa Rica for a brand new TV series, Celebrity Bear Hunt. But that’s not all the week has in store. Olly Alexander’s new album is coming out, Leon Edwards will be talking Donald Trump on Louis Theroux’s podcast, and it’s the 25th anniversary of The Sims. Read on for this week’s biggest releases… We’re going on a (celebrity) bear huntNetflix New TV series Celebrity Bear Hunt drops on Netflix on Wednesday, hosted by Holly Willoughby. Twelve celebrities, including former Spice Girl Mel B, Strictly head judge Shirley Ballas, and chef and rapper Big Zuu, will be dropped into the Central American jungle. So far, so predictable. But this show comes with a twist. We’re told those who fail to impress will be hunted down by survival expert Bear Grylls and, if captured, face elimination from the show. Holly admits her idea of “outdoorsy” usually involves taking the dog for a walk and ending up at a pub lunch (I’m with her on that). But the 43-year-old says she dug deep, and forced herself to be brave: “As you get older, you should always push yourself to try new things.” Olly Alexander goes back to the 80s By Mark Savage, Music correspondent Getty Images When Olly Alexander played Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton last summer, it was just a couple of weeks after his Eurovision dreams came crashing down around his ears. But the star handled it all with his typical good humour. “And now,” he announced from the stage, “for the song that was only 17 places away from winning the Eurovision Song Contest… It’s Dizzy!” Dizzy may have faced a chilly reception in Sweden, but it sounds fresh and exciting on the former Years & Years singer’s new album, Polari, which comes out on Friday. His first release as a solo artist, it sees the star embrace the sounds of 80s club culture, with influences ranging from the ******-coded pop of Erasure and **** Shop Boys to the thunderous drum sounds of Janet Jackson and Art Of Noise. If you’re not familiar with the origin of the title, Olly explained it to me like this: “Polari is kind of considered the lost language of gay men, who would use it to communicate with each other in secret when homosexuality was criminalised. So it’s got a really beautiful, rich history, which I found so inspiring whilst I was making the music.” Olly is hosting a couple of acoustic shows and Q&A events to promote the album in Brighton, Liverpool, Nottingham and London. I dare you to ask what he really thinks about Eurovision. Leon Edwards talks TrumpGetty Images British UFC fighter Leon Edwards’ defeat by American Belal Muhammad last July ended his 12-fight winning streak. On Tuesday, he will be opening up about that rare loss to Louis Theroux on his podcast. But that’s not all that’s on the table. I’ve been told he will also be talking about his upbringing, including moving from Jamaica to Birmingham, being arrested for carrying a knife and his father being killed when he was 13 years old. He will also discuss Donald Trump’s involvement in UFC, and the time he had dinner with controversial British-American influencer Andrew Tate. Apparently, the chat also sees Louis doing 35 continuous press-ups. I feel tired just writing that. Humple Borpnah to The SimsEA/Maxis By Tom Richardson, Newsbeat reporter That’s “Happy Birthday” if you’re a Sim, the virtual people made famous by one of the best-selling video games of all time. The series, which turns 25 on Tuesday, was a smash hit on its original 2000 release, and has since become a genuine cultural phenomenon. Popstars including Katy Perry have recorded songs in Simlish – the gibberish language spoken in the games – and Margot Robbie is set to produce a film inspired by the universe. Naturally, publisher Electronic Arts and developer Maxis have plans to mark the big day. They’ve already re-released the first two games for PC players and on Tuesday, they’ll launch a 25-hour livestream expected to star some of The Sims community’s biggest streamers. There’s also a big in-game update for The Sims 4 containing new item drops and nostalgic rewards. If all of that makes you say “Ugh… groble!” (“Eww, gross!”), then another big game release this week, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, might be more your speed. The Czech-made medieval epic is a sequel to the 2018 sleeper hit, and early previews have been positive. 25. Why Nvidia Stock Plummeted This Week Why Nvidia Stock Plummeted This Week Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) stock saw a big valuation pullback in this week’s trading. The graphics processing unit (GPU) leader’s share price fell 15.8% from its level at the previous week’s market close, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. Nvidia was hit with sell-offs this week as information surrounding the new R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model from DeepSeek signaled a potential paradigm shift in AI training and inference. In addition to the possibility that new approaches to AI software could mean lower demand for Nvidia’s GPUs, the company’s stock also saw pullbacks in conjunction with geopolitical and macroeconomic pressures. Nvidia stock saw a massive pullback in Monday’s trading, closing out the daily session down 17%. The sell-off worked out to a roughly $600 billion pullback in the GPU leader’s market capitalization and marked the biggest-ever valuation pullback for a company on a pure-dollar basis. The Monday sell-off for the stock was spurred by the market’s reaction to a new AI model from DeepSeek — a ******** company. According to information from DeepSeek and other reports, its R1 model was matching or beating the performance of OpenAI’s latest GPT model. At the same time, it reportedly took under $6 million to train — far below the $100 million training figure for OpenAI’s model. Strikingly, DeepSeek’s model was said to be able to perform reasoning and inference applications with far lower processing and cooling requirements. Nvidia’s incredible valuation rise has been powered by the central role that its advanced GPUs play in training and running high-performance AI applications. If more efficient artificial intelligence models are able to deliver high levels of performance with lower processing needs, it could hurt demand for Nvidia’s hardware. In addition to the immediate business-specific implications of DeepSeek’s technology, Nvidia stock also lost ground in conjunction with broader geopolitical dynamics related to artificial intelligence. The R1 model highlighted the possibility that the U.S. is losing its lead over China in AI and the rising tensions between the two countries. Even if R1 winds up having a relatively minimal impact on Nvidia’s business, the trajectory of relations between the U.S. and China could have a big impact on the company’s valuation over the next five years. Adding more bearish catalysts, Nvidia stock was pushed lower by macroeconomic catalysts on two fronts. For starters, the Federal Reserve said at its meeting this week that it would be keeping the benchmark interest rate at its current level. The central banking authority also gave some cautious commentary about the outlook for rate cuts this year and indicated that it was waiting to see the impacts of new economic policies before making any moves. Investors then got another bearish development late in the week’s trading when the Trump administration announced that it would be rolling out new tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada. Story Continues Nvidia continues to have a strong lead in the GPU market, but it looks like the stock could continue to be volatile in the near term. The company is scheduled to release its fourth-quarter results on Feb. 26, and the report is poised to be an important performance catalyst for the AI leader’s valuation and the stock market at large.
