Where is flu surging in the US? Some hospitals are overwhelmed in states with high rates
Flu activity is still spiking across the United States as the country faces a winter wave of respiratory illness. The post-holiday surge in influenza cases and hospitalizations is straining hospitals, leading to overflowing emergency rooms and prompting some facilities to limit patient visitors.
The 2024–2025 flu season — which has sickened an estimated 20 million Americans so far — is in full swing. However, there’s more to come before the season peaks, according to experts.
As of Jan. 31, seasonal flu activity remains elevated and continues to increase across the country, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in its latest FluView weekly surveillance report for the week ending on Jan. 25.
Last week, the flu test positivity rate jumped to over 29%, up from 18% in mid-January.
At least 41 states and Washington, D.C., are currently reporting high or very high levels of influenza-like illness activity, per the CDC‘s most recent data.
“We are right now in the middle of a nationwide epidemic of seasonal influenza that is filling emergency rooms,” Dr. William Schaffner, professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, tells TODAY.com.
The majority of the cases in the U.S. are being caused by influenza A, primarily the H3N2 and H1N1 strains, according to the CDC. Flu A tends to be more aggressive in adults and hit earlier than flu B, but flu B can surge later in the season.
The increased flu activity comes as the country also sees high levels of norovirus and COVID-19, as well as surges in respiratory syncytial virus or RSV — which some have dubbed a “quad-demic.” While it’s expected to see these four viruses surge in the winter, the spike in respiratory illness is keeping doctors and hospitals very busy.
Seasonal influenza is a common and highly contagious respiratory illness. In the U.S., flu activity tends to peak between December and February, per the CDC. However, the 2025-2025 year’s flu season started late and has yet to peak, experts say.
The 2025 flu season
Last year’s flu season peaked in late December, but this year’s season got off to a slower start. Influenza activity started increasing dramatically in early December, says Schaffner, and has “taken off” since.
So far, the CDC estimates there have been at least 20 million illnesses, 250,000 hospitalizations and 11,000 deaths from influenza this season. This includes 47 pediatric deaths, 16 of which were reported last week.
Currently, there are multiple indicators of high flu activity in the U.S., including positive laboratory tests, outpatient and emergency department visits, and hospitalizations, a CDC spokesperson tells TODAY.com. “Mortality associated with influenza is also increasing,” the spokesperson adds.
As of Jan. 31, emergency department visits for influenza are “very high” nationally, according to the CDC. Flu-related hospitalizations started spiking after the holidays and continue to increase, especially among people ages 65 and older.
Wastewater surveillance is also showing very high levels of flu activity across the U.S. According to WastewaterSCAN, which monitors viruses through municipal water systems, influenza A is in the “high” category nationwide as of Jan. 26. Flu B remains in the “low” category, but positive detections are rising, a spokesperson for WastewaterSCAN tells TODAY.com.
The latest CDC FluView data show that flu activity dipped during the first two weeks of January. However, a spokesperson for the CDC said this decrease could’ve been “due to changes in healthcare seeking or reporting during the holidays rather than an indication that influenza activity has peaked.”
“We have a really long way to go with this flu season,” Dr. David Janz, director of medical critical care service at University Medical Center in New Orleans, tells TODAY.com. “We aren’t even halfway up (last year’s) curve of influenza hospitalizations. … We’re maybe 25%.”
It’s unclear how the rest of flu season will pan out, and it’s too soon to tell how its severity will compare to past seasons, experts say.
“We’re in the midst of influenza and it’s bad, but whether it’s different than previous years, we won’t know that for months,” Dr. Jason Newland, the Division Chief of Infectious Diseases at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, tells TODAY.com.
“The current levels of influenza activity are within the range of what has been seen at this time during past seasons,” the CDC spokesperson says.
The 2023-2024 flu season was “moderately severe,” and caused an estimated 40 million illnesses and 28,000 deaths, per the CDC. “Last year, we had over 200 pediatric deaths from flu, that was a really bad year,” says Newland.
Where is flu surging in U.S.?
Map of outpatient influenza-like illness activity in U.S. for 2024-25 flu season
The following U.S. states reported “very high” influenza-like illness activity during the week ending Jan. 25, according to the latest CDC data:
The District of Columbia and New York City are also reporting very high levels of influenza activity, according to the latest CDC data.
Some hospitals feel strained as flu cases rise
Every winter, hospitals fill up around this time of year due to respiratory illnesses, and this year is no exception.
In early January, influenza hospitalizations reached a record high of 10.2 per 100,000 — this is the highest peak weekly rate observed during all flu seasons since 2010, according to the CDC.
Hospital bed occupancy for influenza has doubled in the last month, rising from 1.7% during the week ending Dec. 28 to 3.4% during the week ending Jan. 25, per the latest data from the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network.
The sudden surge in flu cases, along with other respiratory viruses, is overwhelming some hospitals.
Tennessee is one of several states currently experiencing the highest levels of flu activity in the U.S.
“My hospital is jammed,” says Schaffner, who is based in Nashville. “We have people on stretchers, on gurneys in the emergency room waiting to be admitted, and this is true across the country.”
California is also being hit hard. San Diego in particular is seeing a steady rise in flu cases and hospitalizations, Dr. Francesca Torriani, an infectious disease specialist at UC San Diego Health, tells TODAY.com. Compared to this time last year, flu-related emergency department visits are nearly double that of last year in San Diego County, she says.
Also in San Diego, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center has deployed a temporary tent outside their emergency department to triage and treat low-risk patients in response to high volumes of patients with flu symptoms. The hospital is seeing about 15-20 flu patients per day in the tent, which helps open the availability of beds in the ER for other health concerns, Sharp HealthCare tells TODAY.com.
Louisiana is another influenza hot spot. Janz, who works with LCMC hospitals in south Louisiana, says the number of patients hospitalized and in the ICU with influenza has jumped by about 30% since December.
“We’re able to deal with that influx pretty well,” says Janz. However, he notes that the surges in flu-like illnesses can quickly strain hospitals already busy with other patients.
In South Carolina, three major hospital systems have tightened visitor restrictions due to increased influenza, NBC affiliate WYFF4 reported. Last week, Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, Prisma Health and Bon Secours St. Francis began restricting children under 16 and anyone with flu symptoms from visiting hospitalized patients as a safety measure.
Flu is also surging in the Midwest, especially in Ohio. Amid a backdrop of increased RSV and COVID-19 activity, “our hospitals get really busy,” says Newland, who works in Columbus. However, according to Newland, this year’s flu season is less of an outlier and more of a return to the pre-pandemic normal.
Although older adults are driving most hospitalizations, flu is hitting people of all ages. In Oregon, another state seeing very high flu activity, two children have died from flu in recent weeks, NBC affiliate KGW8 previously reported.
As flu activity continues, experts warn that ER wait times and bed availability may be affected. “We’ve got a lot of work left to do for this season, and it still puts all these hospitals at risk,” says Janz.
Influenza symptoms
Flu symptoms can range from mild to severe. Common flu symptoms include:
“People are going to feel bad for a few days, but it’s something that usually people can ride out at home,” says Janz.
Some people are at higher risk of developing severe illness or complications due to influenza. According to the CDC, these include but are not limited to:
People with weakened immune systems
People with underlying chronic health conditions
Flu treatment
Most people will recover from flu without treatment, the experts note. Supportive care such as rest, fluids and over-the-counter medication can help manage symptoms.
The CDC recommends staying home for at least 24 hours until after your fever is gone, except to seek medical attention.
Flu can be treated with antiviral drugs, such as Tamiflu, which are especially important for people at higher risk of severe illness, the CDC says. These require a prescription and are most effective when taken within 48 hours after symptoms begin.
If you are in a high-risk group, feel very sick or have any concerns about flu season, contact your doctor. “They can walk you through when to go and when to not to go in,” says Newland.
In some cases, going to the emergency room may be necessary.
“If people start having difficulty breathing, or if people start getting confused or having really high fevers, or they’re unable to eat or drink for days … I would recommend people seek health care,” says Janz.
How to protect against flu
It’s not too late to get your annual flu shot, the experts say. The influenza vaccine can help protect against flu and its complications, which is especially important for high-risk individuals. It’s recommended by the CDC for everyone ages 6 months and older.
The flu shots for the 2024-2025 season include three flu viruses: two flu A strains (H1N1 and H3N2) and one influenza B strain. Flu B can surge later in the flu season, so the flu shot can offer continued protection for months, TODAY.com previously reported.
In addition to getting your flu shot, you can protect yourself and others by taking the following steps:
Wear a mask in crowded, indoor spaces.

Rubio demands Panama ‘reduce China influence’ over canal
Rubio demands Panama ‘reduce China influence’ over canal
Tom Bateman
State Department correspondent in Panama
Reuters
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, right, was greeted by Panamanian foreign minister Javier Martinez-Acha on his arrival in Panama City
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has demanded that Panama make “immediate changes” to what he calls the “influence and control” of China over the Panama Canal.
America’s top diplomat said Panama must act or the US would take necessary measures to protect its rights under a treaty between the two countries.
The warning follows President Donald Trump’s vow to retake the canal and a meeting between Rubio and Jose Raul Mulino, Panama’s conservative president, in Panama City on Sunday.
The two men appeared to emerge from their two-hour meeting with different interpretations.
Mulino told reporters he did not see a serious threat of US military force to seize the canal, saying he had proposed technical-level talks with the US to address Mr Trump’s concerns about ******** influence.
However, Trump’s vow to retake the canal has sparked a significant backlash in Panama. Protesters in Panama City on Friday burned effigies of Trump and Rubio.
Riot police moved in on another crowd of demonstrators, firing tear gas and wrestling people away. The clashes were small-scale, but the resistance to the US president’s stance is widely felt.
On Thursday, Mulino said the issue of the canal’s ownership would not be up for discussion with Rubio.
“I cannot negotiate or even open a negotiation process about the canal. It’s sealed, the canal belongs to Panama,” he said.
Mr Trump’s comments about the canal included an unfounded claim that ******** soldiers are operating it. He also said American ships were unfairly charged more than others, despite the fact such a practice would be unlawful under treaty agreements.
The waterway is in fact owned and operated by the Panamanian government, under a neutrality treaty signed with the US decades ago. However, ******** companies have invested heavily in ports and terminals near the canal. A Hong Kong based company runs two of the five ports close to its entrances.
But President Trump’s muscular approach – even refusing to rule out military action to take the canal – has ******** a strongly patriotic reaction in the small strategic nation.
“It’s ridiculous,” says Panama City resident Mari, who asked not to have her surname published.
“There’s a treaty that he has to respect, and there’s nothing in the treaty that says that we cannot have ports run by the ********,” she told the BBC, pointing out that there is ******** investment in American ports and cities.
EPA
Demonstrators came out in Panama City on Friday to protest Rubio’s visit
Surrounded by tourists and stalls hawking Panama hats and souvenirs, Mari explained that many residents have strong memories of US control of the canal and don’t want to go back.
The US and Panama signed a treaty in 1979, starting a handover process that saw Panama take full control of the canal in 1999.
“We could not cross into the canal zone without being arrested if we didn’t follow all the American rules. The minute you stepped across that border, you were in the United States,” Mari said.
“We had no rights within our own country, and we will not put up with that again… We are very insulted by [Trump’s] words.”
For some, Trump’s refusal to rule out the use of military force has also triggered suspicion and fear. It evokes memories of the 1989 US invasion of Panama to depose de facto ruler General Manuel Noriega, a conflict that lasted several weeks and rapidly overwhelmed Panamanian forces.
“I was the political leader of the opposition when Noriega said he was going to kill all the leaders of the opposition if the US were to invade,” recalled former Panama congressman Edwin Cabrera, speaking to the BBC by the locks of the canal’s Pacific entrance.
“I heard the bombs and started seeing people dying… The only thing President Trump and Rubio have left to say is that they will invade us,” he told the BBC. “I wouldn’t like to live that again in the 21st Century, relive the imperial experience. Panama is in the middle of war between two powers, the USA and China, while we are looking at the sky.”
Hotel worker Andre Howell says Panamanians don’t see enough of the benefits from the Panama Canal
Marco Rubio is the first Hispanic Secretary of State and is well known for his hawkish positions on some leaders in the region and on China. While Panama closely co-operates with the US on many issues, Mr Rubio’s visit is meant to signal the administration’s intolerance of countries soaking up ******** investment in what the US sees as its own backyard.
In Panama, he claims China could ultimately use its interests at the ports to block US merchant or war ships in the event of a conflict or trade war.
“If China wanted to obstruct traffic in the Panama Canal, they could. That’s a fact… That’s what President Trump is raising and we’re going to address that topic… That dynamic cannot continue,” Mr Rubio said on Fox News last week.
Despite the overwhelming support among ordinary Panamanians for their country’s ownership of the canal, some remain sceptical of their own leadership, arguing profits from the waterway don’t filter through to enough ordinary Panamanians.
“What you see here – that the United States and Donald Trump want to take back the canal – that’s what we call cause and effect,” says Andre Howell, a hotel worker in the historic centre of Panama City.
“They’re not administrating the Panama Canal the right way… No Panamanians have [the] benefits,” he said.

Diddy Was Taken To A Hospital Late At Night A Month After Allegedly Having A ‘Meltdown’ In Jail
Diddy Was Taken To A Hospital Late At Night A Month After Allegedly Having A ‘Meltdown’ In Jail
Sean “Diddy” Combs was recently removed from his MDC jail and transported to a hospital late at night.
This comes as he awaits his sex crimes trial scheduled for May 5 after being charged with sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation to engage in prostitution.
Sean “Diddy” Combs’ latest hospital stint comes a month after it was revealed that he had a “meltdown” in jail during the holiday *******.
Why Was Diddy Taken To A Hospital Late At Night?
MEGA
According to a report, Diddy had to be taken from prison to a nearby hospital on Thursday night.
A law enforcement source close to the situation informed the New York Post that the rapper was transported to the Brooklyn Hospital Center at around 10 p.m.
This late-night movement was allegedly done in order not to draw attention from prison staff or other inmates.
Multiple sources also confirmed to the news outlet that the rapper was taken to the hospital for an MRI scan, a noninvasive test used to examine the organs, tissues, and skeletal system with high-resolution images produced by the MRI machine.
The rapper reportedly did not stay overnight at the hospital and was returned to his cell a few hours later.
Diddy’s reason for going to the hospital is still unclear, as a source told Page Six that he had a knee issue, and another claimed to NYP that the rapper was involved in a prison fight.
Although the music mogul’s team has yet to clarify his hospital visit, a Bureau of Prisons spokesperson said of the situation: “For privacy, safety, and security reasons, we do not comment on the conditions of confinement for anyone in our custody to include medical status or medical trips.”
Diddy Has Had Problems With His Knee In The Past
MEGA
Diddy has reportedly had a long history of knee issues, previously undergoing four surgeries in two years due to his knee.
In 2020, the music mogul shared on his Instagram Stories that he was prone to having accidents, stating, “I’m clumsy. I trip. I fall. I fall in holes.”
“It’s always been like that,” he continued, per Page Six. “This is my fourth surgery in two years. I’ve had two rotator cuffs, a knee replacement, and now it’s on quad.”
“At the end of the day, this is God’s work to slow me down,” Diddy concluded.
The Rapper Recently Suffered A Massive ‘Meltdown’ In Jail
MEGA
Diddy has seemingly been having a tough time in prison, as his recent hospital visit comes a month after he was reported to have had a “meltdown” over his multiple failed bail attempts.
On Thursday, December 26, the rapper allegedly had a breakdown because he couldn’t believe he was still stuck in the MDC prison months after his arrest on sex crime charges.
According to the Daily Mail, the rapper had expected to be “out on bail by now” due to the “high-powered legal team” he assembled for his defense.
However, the failure of their efforts to secure his release appeared to have taken a toll on him, making “spending the holidays behind bars” a “nightmare.”
Diddy’s team has yet to confirm the occurrence of a “meltdown” since the alleged incident was reported.
Diddy Has Lost A Considerable Amount Of Weight Amid His Stay In Jail
MEGA
Diddy has been in detention at the MDC since his arrest on September 16, 2024, and being locked up in detention appears to have taken a physical toll on him.
Law and Crime reporter Elizabeth Millner reported that during the rapper’s last hearing in January, he looked like he had lost a lot of weight.
The journalist noted that Diddy “appeared just astonishingly thinner” and also “appeared greyer a little bit.”
“A lot different from the luxury lifestyle that he was living before, but he appeared very noticeably thinner, and maybe being locked up in detention is starting to wear on him,” Millner added, per Page Six.
The Rapper Was Recently Accused Of Sex Trafficking Two More Victims In His Federal Case
MEGA
As he awaits his trial in May, the legal issues keep mounting for Diddy. Federal prosecutors recently revised their indictment against him to include the sex trafficking of two new female victims.
The filing, which was made on Thursday in the Southern District of New York, accused Diddy of employing the use of threats to force at least three women “to engage in commercial sex acts’ which the rapper called “Freak Offs.”
“Like the Freak Offs, these commercial sex acts involving Combs and a female victim were prearranged, sometimes lasted multiple days, were sometimes electronically recorded by Combs and often involved Combs distributing a variety of controlled substances to the victim, in part to keep the victim obedient and compliant,” the legal documents read, per Page Six.
Diddy’s lawyer, Marc Agnifilo, has since slammed the revised indictment in a statement, noting that it contains “no new offenses.”
“The prosecution’s theory remains flawed,” Agnifilo said. “The government has added the ridiculous theory that two of Mr. Combs’ former girlfriends were not girlfriends at all but were prostitutes.”

Traders work at the New York Stock Exchange on Jan. 29, 2025.
NYSE
Stock futures tumbled Sunday night to kick off a new trading month as investors weighed new U.S. tariffs on goods from key trade partners and their potential impact on the economy and corporate profits.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average slid 528 points, or 1%. S&P 500 futures dropped 1.9%, while Nasdaq-100 futures lost 2.7%.
President Donald Trump on Saturday slapped a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada. He also placed a 10% levy on imports from China. The U.S. does about $1.6 trillion in business with the three countries.
Canada responded with retaliatory tariffs of its own, while Mexico said it would explore levies on U.S. imports. The ******** government, meanwhile, said it would file a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization.
“Markets may now need to take the rest of Trump’s tariff agenda literally rather than just seriously … If this new level of seriousness gets priced in suddenly, Monday could be a rough day for markets,” Wolfe Research head of U.S. policy and politics Tobin Marcus said in a note.
Traders are also looking ahead to the biggest week for fourth-quarter earnings, which have become increasingly important in determining the state of the market as tariff concerns ramp and artificial intelligence stocks remain under scrutiny. More than 120 companies in the S&P 500 are set to report their results, including tech names Alphabet, Amazon and Palantir, as well consumer giants, including Walt Disney and Mondelez.
The January nonfarm payrolls report will also be out Friday, adding color to the employment picture so far this year. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect that 175,000 jobs were added last month. The unemployment rate is predicted to have remained unchanged at 4.1%.
Stocks are coming off of a volatile few weeks. The three major U.S. indexes ended Friday’s trading session in the red, but traders still closed off the first month of the year with gains. The S&P 500 gained 2.7% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite added 1.6% in January, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average outperformed during the *******, jumping 4.7%.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs taken from prison to hospital late at night
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs taken from prison to hospital late at night
Sean “Diddy” Combs, who is awaiting his sex trafficking trial behind bars, was taken from a Brooklyn prison to a nearby hospital late Thursday night, Page Six can confirm.
A law enforcement source first told The Post that the embattled music mogul, 55, was transported from the Metropolitan Detention Center to the Brooklyn Hospital Center at around 10 p.m.
An insider exclusively tells Page Six that transport was made after dark in order to be inconspicuous, as they did not want to attract attention from other inmates or prison staffers.
Multiple sources confirmed to The Post and Page Six that Combs went to get an MRI, which is a non-invasive medical imaging test that produces detailed images of almost every internal structure in the human body, including the organs, bones, muscles and blood vessels.

A source says the “Last Night” rapper’s knee was bothering him and so he went to get it checked out.
We’re told Combs did not stay overnight at the hospital and was back at his cell within a few hours.
A separate source speculated to The Post that the musician had been involved in a prison fight or had some other emergency, but we’re told that was not the case.
Reps and attorneys for Combs did not immediately return Page Six’s request for comment.
A Bureau of Prisons spokesperson, meanwhile, told The Post, “For privacy, safety, and security reasons we do not comment on the conditions of confinement for anyone in our custody to include medical status or medical trips.”

Combs has had a long history of knee problems. In 2020, he underwent his fourth surgery in two years.
The “Bad Boy for Life” rapper admitted via his Instagram Stories at the time that he was very accident-prone, saying, “I’m clumsy. I trip. I fall. I fall in holes.
“It’s always been like that. This is my fourth surgery in two years. I’ve had two rotator cuffs, a knee replacement, and now it’s on quad.”
He concluded at the time, “At the end of the day, this is God’s work to slow me down.”

Five years later, Combs is facing a slew of ******* assault lawsuits and serious jail time for multiple charges, including federal sex trafficking, racketeering and transportation to engage in prostitution.
He has pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing, but will have to wait until his trial begins on May 5 before he is able to fight to be a free man again.
The Bad Boy Records founder has been denied bail three times and there have been reports that his prison stint is starting to take a toll on his body.

A reporter for Law and Crime claimed after a hearing last December that Combs appeared “astonishingly thinner” and grayer than when he was first taken into custody three months prior.
However, a source told Page Six at the time that the former “Making the Band” producer was “fit, healthy and fully focused on his defense.”
“He has been very active, remains in good spirits, and, as always, he was happy to see his children,” the insider added. We were also told that Combs works out regularly.

Mali hostage ordeal ends in exit for Resolute Mining CEO Terry Holohan
Mali hostage ordeal ends in exit for Resolute Mining CEO Terry Holohan
Resolute Mining boss Terry Holohan has called time on his tenure at the Africa-focused gold play.
Mr Holohan was due to return to his role as chief executive this week after taking time away following his release by Mali’s ruling military junta who held him — and two other Resolute executive — captive for almost two weeks over a tax dispute.
Resolute reached a tax settlement deal that cost it more than $250 million to secure the trio’s release in late November.
The company announced just a few weeks later that *** national Mr Holohan would take leave until the end of January to spend time with his family.
But in an update to the *********** Securities Exchange on Monday — which was devoid of any personal statement from Mr Holohan — the company said it was now discussing the terms of a proposed settlement to end his employment.
Resolute was the latest in a string of miners to be caught up in the impoverished nation’s attempts to squeeze more money from foreign players by pressuring them to renegotiate agreements under threat of losing their operating licences.
Chief financial officer Chris Eger — who has been acting CEO during Mr Holohan’s absence — will take on the top job permanently and will join the board.
Group financial controller Dave Jackson, who had been filling in for Mr Eger, becomes the miner’s new CFO.
Resolute chair Andrew Wray said Mr Holohan had played an important role and improved operational performance across the business.

The dual-listed precious metals miner operates the Syama gold operation in Mali. It has so far paid $US160m ($260m) to Mali’s military government under the terms of the settlement that freed its executives.
Mr Eger told investors at a results presentation late last week that Resolute had not locked in a new mining code with the country’s officials, punting back talks amid wider negotiations across the industry.
“We are rebuilding the relationship with Mali,” he said.
“But we’re being extra vigilant to how the overall politics in West Africa evolve.”
When a deal is inked, it would be expected to add about $US250 per ounce to Resolute’s all in costs profile.
Resolute posted unaudited revenue of $US800m through the year amid a strong global gold price.
“From an operational and cash generation perspective 2024 was one of the strongest years Resolute has had in recent times,” Mr Eger said.
“The operations at Syama continue to perform extremely well.”

VGChartz’s Taneli Palola: “The nominees for Best Original Music Score of 2024 were once again a mix of entirely new soundtracks and updated rearrangements of old favourites. From the wonderful reorchestrations of Persona 3 Reload and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, to the entirely new original scores of Astro Bot, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, the top contenders of the year are unlikely to be much of a surprise to anyone, though as always some excellent scores missed the top five, and only one can take home the top prize.”

Earth’s Underworld Is Full of Life, And It Goes Deeper Than We Ever Knew
Earth’s Underworld Is Full of Life, And It Goes Deeper Than We Ever Knew
The surface of our Earth is wriggling with life: it’s the defining feature of our planet, which, far as we know, makes it unique among the cosmos. But we may have underestimated how deep beneath our feet Earth’s creatures can thrive.
In an ambitious 8-year census, an international team of scientists has found an astonishing diversity of microbes living beneath our planet’s surface, deeper than anything we’ve discovered prior.
Led by microbial ecologist Emil Ruff from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in the US and bioinformatician Isabella Hrabe de Angelis from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Germany, the study has turned up lifeforms as deep as 491 meters (1610 feet) below the ocean floor, and even further below land: up to 4,375 meters (2.7 miles) deep.
The team analyzed samples from more than 50 locations across the globe, collected from above and below Earth’s surface, as well as sites like caves and deep-sea hydrothermal vents that form the surface threshold.
Surface samples were collected from soils, sediments, or water columns, while subsurface samples were retrieved from boreholes, mines, aquifers, or the fluid from fracking.
The diversity of life forms discovered follow an unexpected pattern.
“It’s commonly assumed that the deeper you go below the Earth’s surface, the less energy is available, and the lower is the number of cells that can survive,” Ruff says.
“But we show that in some subsurface environments, the diversity can easily rival, if not exceed, diversity at the surface.”
This was particularly true for microbes in marine environments, and for microbes from the taxonomic category known as the archaea domain, which became more genetically rich, with diversity more evenly spread, the deeper researchers looked. Bacterial diversity in the marine subsurface was unexpectedly high compared to surface ecosystems.
Life in these underworlds runs on a very different timeline to Earth’s bustling surface. With no sunlight, energy is sparse and must be harvested from the surrounding materials and their chemical reactions: hydrogen, methane, sulfur, serpentinization, the dead (or living) bodies of neighboring microbes, and even radioactivity.
These ecosystems move at a tectonic pace. Scientists estimate that some cells in the deep biosphere divide only once every thousand years.

“It makes sense to be evolutionarily adapted to absolutely minimize your power and energy requirements and optimize every single part of your metabolism to be as energy efficient as possible,” Ruff says.
The study assessed the microbial diversity among 478 archaea and 964 bacteria, along with 147 metagenomes from various marine and terrestrial locations.
Surface and subsurface life actually tended to fall along a continuum of diversity and structure, rather than existing as two separate ecosystems with a clear divide.
But there were marked differences in how marine and terrestrial ecosystems were composed, regardless of surface or subsurface habitat.
“The selective pressures are very different on land and in the sea, and they select for different organisms that have a hard time living in both realms,” Ruff explains. As above, so below.
The team notes that there was almost too much data available for certain environments, for example the marine surface, while data was scarce or missing for other environments, like caves or soils.
If life can exist so far beneath our planet’s surface, perhaps it’s possible further afield: as Ruff says, “understanding deep life on Earth could be a model for discovering if there was life on Mars, and if it has survived.”
Liquid water on other planets could have given them rocky subsurface habitats very similar to Earth’s, just three meters below their surface. If that’s the case, any alien encounters might require some digging.
This research was published in Science Advances.

‘We’re obviously concerned’: Albanese Government seeks urgent talks after Trump’s tariff move
‘We’re obviously concerned’: Albanese Government seeks urgent talks after Trump’s tariff move
Australia is in a strong position to deal with the economic fallout of US President Donald Trump’s steep 25 per cent trade tariffs on ********* and ******** products and ten per cent on goods from China, Foreign Minister Penny Wong said on Monday.
The Albanese Government has stepped up measures to reassure the business community after the tariffs were announced at the weekend, with Trade Minister Don Farrell seeking talks “as soon as is humanly possible” with his US counterpart, according to the AFR.
The move by the Trump administration has sparked global alarm about an escalating trade war with far-reaching economic implications.
Canada has already announced retaliatory tariffs against its neighbour and China has pledged to take unspecified “countermeasures” against the levies and is planning to challenge the tariff at the World Trade Organisation.
“We are obviously concerned about this development,” said Employment Minister Murray Watt about the US announcement.
“Given that Australia is a trading nation, there’s about one in four *********** jobs that depend on trade, and we have a very strong trade relationship with the US that we want to see remain intact,” he told ABC Breakfast News.
There have been no signals so far that the US is likely to impose tariffs on Australia, and the Government does not believe that Washington is poised to do so.
“One of the key points that we’ve made is that not only do we have a free trade agreement between our two countries, but the US has had an unbroken trade surplus with Australia back to the 1950s,” said Mr Watt.
“We know we’ve seen that President Trump for some time has been talking about taking action against countries with whom the US has a trade deficit. It’s actually the reverse here, the US supplies more goods and services to Australia than we supply to the US.”
Senator Wong, also made this argument to the Trump administration when she met with her US counterpart Marco Rubio on the day after Mr Trump’s inauguration in Washington.
“President Trump is implementing the agenda he said he would … obviously that’s going to affect global markets,” she told reporters in Canberra on Monday.
“We understand that and we also understand that we best approach this by our close engagement with the United States.”
“The US has a two-to-one trade surplus with Australia and every good and service from the US comes into our country free of tariffs.”

State Government tips in $4 million to extend regional airfares zone cap scheme to mid-2026
State Government tips in $4 million to extend regional airfares zone cap scheme to mid-2026
The State Government has allocated an extra $4 million to the regional airfares zone cap scheme to extend the program to mid-2026.
The government on Friday said a review of the scheme and renegotiation of terms would start in the middle of this year, with the six-month extension until mid-2026 ensuring there would be no gap in the service while this occurred.
The scheme introduced in July 2022 allows residents of WA regional towns to buy return fares between their location and Perth at reduced rates from a range of airlines.
The program prices tickets from towns with 1000km of Perth at $199 one-way, and $299 one-way from towns more than 1000km away from the State capital.
The government said regional residents had embraced the scheme, with more than 420,000 capped airfares having been flown, significantly reducing the cost of return flights to Perth for personal reasons, including for specialist appointments and family visits.
