  3. 401(k)s have a ‘portability failure,’ and that’s a problem for employees 401(k)s have a ‘portability failure,’ and that’s a problem for employees Listen and subscribe to Decoding Retirement on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. The 401(k) system, introduced in 1978, is showing its age and grappling with significant challenges. Currently, only about 50% of workers have access to these plans through their employers, and the system wasn’t built to accommodate today’s increasingly mobile workforce, according to Laurie Rowley, co-founder and CEO of Icon, a retirement solutions firm. This has resulted in major issues with account portability and a troubling number of lost retirement accounts. In a recent episode of Decoding Retirement, Rowley highlighted these shortcomings within the US retirement system. “The portability failure of the 401(k) plan is because it was never constructed to be portable,” Rowley said. “There’s all these patchwork systems that people can use,” she said, but added that those systems are imperfect. This embedded content is not available in your region. According to Rowley, when an employee leaves an employer with a 401(k) plan, one of four things typically happens. Some leave their 401(k) behind. Rowley noted that some 25% of all assets in 401(k) plans are abandoned or lost. That’s 29 million people who have lost their 401(k) plan. “When they walk away from it, they forget where it is,” she said. Others roll their 401(k) plan into an IRA. About $800 billion has been rolled out of 401(k) plans and into IRAs. A tiny segment of people choose to roll it into a new employer’s 401(k) plan, but it’s often “a hard thing to roll into another employer’s 401(k) plan,” she said. In still other cases, the employee cashes out their 401(k). “That’s the portability failure, in my opinion,” she said. “It’s a lot for us to expect people to make these decisions every time they change jobs about where they’re going to put the retirement plan, what investments they’re going to have. … It’s the most important asset that people have in their life, and we’re asking them to change it every couple of years. That’s where the problem comes in.” One way retirement account owners can address the “portability” challenge is to roll over their 401(k) into an IRA. “I absolutely think that every individual should keep their retirement plans with them,” she said. “I think they should take it out of that employer’s plan and put it into an IRA so that they have control of it.” That way, “they know where it is,” she continued. “They can monitor their investment. They can watch the fees and their portfolio and not be subject to losing their plan … I think people need to keep that asset with them through their whole life.” Story Continues Sabrina Leberecht and husband Christian from Wittenau carry a rowing boat to Lake Tegel. (Andreas Gora/picture alliance via Getty Images) · picture alliance via Getty Images Rowley’s firm offers another solution called the Portable Retirement Plan (PRP). A PRP functions much like a traditional plan, where employees contribute to their accounts through payroll deductions. “It’s a combination of a workplace retirement plan and an individual plan,” she said. “We know that getting folks to save through their employer is a really good way for people to build their [wealth].” The key difference is that the PRP eliminates the cost, complexity, and fiduciary responsibility for the employer, making it easier to set up and manage, Rowley said. Under her solution, plans are established on Icon’s platform and Icon assumes the fiduciary responsibility for the individual. “We can put them into a personalized portfolio that’s tailored to their needs, and their savings go directly into their own account that they own because it’s a form of an IRA,” she said. This approach, according to Rowley, ensures that when an employee leaves their job, they can take their plan with them, eliminating the need for rollovers. “You don’t have to change your investments,” she said. “You don’t have to change anything about your plan. You just disconnect from your employer. And you can go on to use your plan at your next employer.” Each Tuesday, retirement expert and financial educator Robert Powell gives you the tools to plan for your future on Decoding Retirement. 4. Ontario to remove U.S. alcohol from shelves after Trump’s tariffs announcement Ontario to remove U.S. alcohol from shelves after Trump’s tariffs announcement Ontario Premier Doug Ford speaks during a campaign stop at Walker Construction in Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, January 31, 2025. Carlos Osorio | Reuters Ontario will pull all American alcohol from its government-run liquor shelves beginning Tuesday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on ********* imports. Outlets of the Liquor Control Board of Ontario will also take U.S. products out of its catalog so other retailers can’t order or restock those items, according to a Sunday statement by Premier Doug Ford. “Every year, LCBO sells nearly $1 billion worth of American wine, beer, spirits and seltzers. Not anymore,” Ford said. “There’s never been a better time to choose an amazing Ontario-made or *********-made product.” Ford’s announcement came just hours after ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau slapped retaliatory tariffs of 25% against $155 billion of U.S. goods. The LCBO is one of the largest wholesalers of alcohol, selling more than 1.1 billion liters of alcohol products in Ontario in 2023. According to the Observatory of Economic Complexity, Canada primarily imports hard liquor from America with an estimated $320 million in sales. The U.S.’s second main export destination for liquor as of October 2024 is Canada, with a $25.9 million trade value, according to the OEC. In a statement provided to CNBC, the LCBO said it will be stopping all sales of U.S. alcohol products online and in stores “indefinitely,” adding that it is the “importer of record” for all American alcohol into Ontario. LCBO currently lists more than 3,600 products from 35 U.S. states, the statement added. The move follows other similar ********* premiers’ announcements of retaliation to the tariffs, including Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston directing the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation to remove all American alcohol from their shelves on Tuesday and British Columbia Premier David Eby directing the BC Liquor Distribution Branch to “immediately stop buying American liquor from “red states” and remove the top-selling “red-state” brands from the shelves.” Source link #Ontario #remove #U.S #alcohol #shelves #Trumps #tariffs #announcement Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. Marcus Rashford transfer: Manchester United to Aston Villa Marcus Rashford transfer: Manchester United to Aston Villa In public, Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim tried to counter the view that he wanted to jettison Rashford. But United insiders believe the former Sporting boss felt it would be better for everyone if the forward was no longer around. Even towards the back end of last week, there was still hopeful talk of a resolution on Rashford’s part. Now the reality is sinking in. Amorim has got his way. What has been very difficult to pinpoint, even though Amorim has given some frank interviews, is the detailed reasoning why the coach was so willing to let him leave. It was all sparked when Amorim dropped Rashford for the Manchester derby on 15 December. Three days earlier, the forward had been substituted 11 minutes into the second half of what looked like being an embarrassing Europa League defeat by Czech side Viktoria Plzen. Rasmus Hojlund came on to replace him and scored two goals to turn the match into a 2-1 win. Rashford his been omitted from 11 of 12 squads since. The one time he did make a squad – the 2-0 home Premier League defeat by Newcastle on 30 December – he was left on the bench. Afterwards, Amorim was asked why. When he had to address the subject again before Thursday’s Europa League win over Romanian side FCSB, Amorim seemed as if he was starting to get irritated. There is no doubt he has used the Rashford situation as a test of his strength. Sir Alex Ferguson, an illustrious predecessor, may well have approved. “If the coach has no control, he will not last,” Ferguson explained in a case study for Harvard Business School, published in the weeks after his retirement in 2013. “You have to achieve a position of comprehensive control. Players must recognise that as the manager, you have the status to control events. Before I came to United, I told myself I wasn’t going to allow anyone to be stronger than I was. Your personality has to be ******* than theirs.” Amorim’s latest comments on the Rashford saga were not as polished but the sentiment was the same. “You [the media] want to make it personal,” said Amorim. “I have nothing against Marcus but I have to make the same rules for everybody.” It was more or less the same message Amorim delivered at the Etihad Stadium in dropping Rashford and forward Alejandro Garnacho for the Manchester derby win over City. In various forms, it has been repeated at least half a dozen times in the interim. “It’s important, the performance in training, the performance in the games, the way you dress, the way you eat, the way you engage with your team-mates, the way you push your team-mates, everything is important in the context of beginning something, when we want to change a lot of things,” Amorim outlined. “It’s the small details. When people in our club are losing their jobs, we have to put the standards really high.” Source link #Marcus #Rashford #transfer #Manchester #United #Aston #Villa Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  8. DeepSeek might not be as disruptive as claimed, firm reportedly has 50,000 Nvidia GPUs and spent $1.6 billion on buildouts DeepSeek might not be as disruptive as claimed, firm reportedly has 50,000 Nvidia GPUs and spent $1.6 billion on buildouts ******** startup DeepSeek recently took center stage in the tech world with its startlingly low usage of compute resources for its advanced AI model called R1, a model that is believed to be competitive with Open AI’s o1. However, SemiAnalysis reports that it took DeepSeek $1.6 billion in hardware costs and 50,000 Hopper GPUs to develop its next model, a finding that undermines the idea that DeepSeek reinvented AI training and inference. DeepSeek operates an extensive computing infrastructure with approximately 50,000 Hopper GPUs, the report claims. This includes 10,000 H800s and 10,000 H100s, with additional purchases of H20 units, according to SemiAnalysis. These resources are distributed across multiple locations and serve purposes such as AI training, research, and financial modeling. The company’s total capital investment in servers is around $1.6 billion, with an estimated $944 million spent on operating costs, according to SemiAnalysis. DeepSeek took the attention of the AI world by storm when it disclosed the minuscule hardware requirements of its DeepSeek-V3 Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) AI model that are vastly lower when compared to those of U.S.-based models. Then DeepSeek shook the high-tech world with an Open AI-competitive R1 AI model. But then the reputable market intelligence company SemiAnalysis revealed its findings to indicate that DeepSeek used some $1.6 billion of hardware for R1. DeepSeek originates from High-Flyer, a ******** hedge fund that adopted AI early and heavily invested in GPUs. In 2023, High-Flyer launched DeepSeek as a separate venture solely focused on AI. Unlike many competitors, DeepSeek remains self-funded, giving it flexibility and speed in decision-making. Despite claims that it is a minor offshoot, the company has invested over $500 million into its technology, according to SemiAnalysis. A major differentiator for DeepSeek is its ability to run its own datacenters, unlike most other AI startups that rely on external cloud providers. This independence allows for full control over experiments and AI model optimizations. In addition, it enables rapid iteration without external bottlenecks, making DeepSeek highly efficient compared to traditional players in the industry. Then there is something that one would not expect from a ******** company: talent acquisition from mainland China, with no poaching from Taiwan or the U.S. DeepSeek exclusively hires from within China, focusing on skills and problem-solving abilities rather than formal credentials, according to SemiAnalysis. Recruitment efforts target institutions like Peking University and Zhejiang University, offering highly competitive salaries. Some AI researchers at DeepSeek earn over $1.3 million, exceeding compensation at other leading ******** AI firms such as Moonshot, according to the research. Due to the talent inflow, DeepSeek has pioneered innovations like Multi-Head Latent Attention (MLA), which required months of development and substantial GPU usage, SemiAnalysis reports. DeepSeek emphasizes efficiency and algorithmic improvements over brute-force scaling, reshaping expectations around AI model development. This approach has for many reasons led some to believe that rapid advancements may reduce the demand for high-end GPUs, impacting companies like Nvidia. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. A recent claim that DeepSeek trained its latest model for just $6 million has fueled much of the hype. However, this figure refers only to a portion of the total training cost— specifically, the GPU time required for pre-training. It does not account for research, model refinement, data processing, or overall infrastructure expenses. In reality, DeepSeek has spent well over $500 million on AI development since its inception. Unlike larger firms burdened by bureaucracy, DeepSeek’s lean structure enables it to push forward aggressively in AI innovation, SemiAnalysis believes. DeepSeek’s rise underscores how a well-funded, independent AI company can challenge industry leaders. However, the public discourse has been driven by hype. Reality is more complex: DeepSeek’s success is built on strategic investments of billions of dollars, technical breakthroughs, and a competitive workforce. What it means is that there are no wonders. As Elon Musk noted a year or so ago, if you want to be competitive in AI, spend billions per year, this is apparently what was spent. 10. Forget the RTX 5090 – the RTX 5070 is the best gift Nvidia has given PC gamers in ages Forget the RTX 5090 – the RTX 5070 is the best gift Nvidia has given PC gamers in ages Yes, I know, we’re all very excited about how powerful Nvidia’s RTX 5090 is, and presumably many of us are also very upset that Nvidia apparently thought seven cards per retailer would be enough stock for launch day (note to Jensen Huang: that was a joke, please take your hitman off speed dial). But even though it does look mighty impressive – and as per our RTX 5080 review, the middle child of the Blackwell generation is no slouch either – there’s a different GPU I’m really looking forward to this year, and it’s the lowest-spec desktop card Nvidia announced at CES 2025. That’s right, I’m talking about the RTX 5070. Now, I’ve always had a soft spot for Nvidia’s xx70 GPUs; I rocked a GTX 970 back in the day, and I was a strong supporter of the RTX 3070 when it came out back in 2020. These cards typically find the right balance between performance and pricing; not too expensive, but still perfectly capable of delivering a solid gaming experience to the average consumer. And with the RTX 5070, I think we could be in for a treat – not least because Nvidia has seemingly done the unthinkable. A pleasant surprise See, at launch, the current-gen RTX 4070 cost $599 / £589 / AU$1,109. I thought that was a pretty fair price at the time – certainly better value for money than the higher-end Lovelace GPUs, and something we praised it for in our review. I was expecting to see the exact same price tag for the RTX 5070, but no: Nvidia has actually lowered the list price, bringing it down to $549 / £549 (around AU$880). I’m really not exaggerating when I say that this is nuts. Obviously, we don’t have performance figures for the RTX 5070 yet, so there’s every possibility Nvidia does ****** the pooch on this one, but let’s be honest: this card will likely sit somewhere between the RTX 4070 and RTX 4080, with $50 / £40 shaved off the price tag to boot. That’s great! That’s not all, either; I’m just talking about my raw performance expectations here, but that’s without even factoring in Multi Frame Generation, which combined with DLSS 4 and Reflex 2 provides a serious performance boost for RTX 5000 GPUs without many of the drawbacks seen in previous iterations of Nvidia’s upscaling and frame-gen tech. Access to these tools – which can be retroactively improved by Nvidia – is a key winning factor for the 5070. With that price tag, the RTX 5070 has genuine potential to be the new 1440p gaming king – or even a reasonably priced 4K card, once we see how well DLSS 4 and MFG actually perform on a more affordable Blackwell card. Personally, I have high expectations… don’t let me down, Nvidia. You might also like… Source link #Forget #RTX #RTX #gift #Nvidia #gamers #ages Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. SNP to consider banning cats SNP to consider banning cats SNP ministers are to consider banning **** cats, in a bid to protect birds and other wildlife. An official report for the Scottish Government suggests establishing containment zones where residents can be forced to keep their pets indoors, or stopped from owning them altogether. The report claims that domestic cats have a “significant impact on wildlife populations” as they hunt for fun, torture prey through play, and bring maimed animals home to their owners. SNP ministers said they were “fully considering” the report, by the Scottish Animal ******** Commission, which claims domestic cats are threatening rare wildcat populations by competing with them for food and habitats, and passing on diseases. It recommends consideration of “compulsory containment” of cats in vulnerable areas, meaning they would not be allowed outside. The late Alex Salmond, former SNP leader, canvassing a cat owner in 2015 – Simon Dawson/Bloomberg It suggests that, in new housing developments in rural areas, a stipulation could be added that cats “may not be kept”, especially when homes were close to endangered bird populations or other under-threat animals. The report says that forcing owners in “vulnerable areas” to neuter their pets, in an effort to prevent the expansion of feral cat populations, is worth further consideration. Cats Protection, the charity, criticised the calls, describing Scotland as a “nation of cat lovers” and saying everyone should have the right to enjoy the benefits of a feline companion. “Ideally, all cats should have the choice to access the outside world,” Alice Palombo, the charity’s government relations officer for Scotland, told The Mail on Sunday. “Cats need to be able to perform natural cat-like behaviours if they’re to live happy, healthy lives. While some cats tolerate living indoors, missing out on these vital experiences can lead to stress-related problems like spraying, excessive grooming or physical illness.” John Swinner – the First Minister, pictured here at an animal hospital in Glasgow – must decide whether to act on the recommendations of the report – Danny Lawson/PA The Scottish Animal ******** Commission was set up in 2020 by Nicola Sturgeon to provide recommendations to ministers on the “******** of sentient animals in Scotland”, based on “scientific evidence and ethical considerations”. The report says pets have a “huge potential impact” on other animals, and claims that cats bring home tens of millions of animals – mammals, reptiles and amphibians – every year in the ***. It adds: “Given that only a proportion of prey are brought home… the actual number of wild prey killed could reach at least 700 million vertebrates per year in the ***. “While the killing of prey by a cat may not necessarily be regarded as a ******** issue, domestic cats have a tendency to play with their prey and bring back live often injured prey to their owners.” The report states that containment areas have been set up in parts of Australia, where under the law the pets must be kept within a property 24 hours a day. The commission estimated that domestic cats kill 700 million vertebrates in the *** every year – Frantic00/iStockphoto The only exceptions are for enclosed outdoor runs or if owners take cats for walks on a lead. Douglas Ross, the former Scottish Tory leader, said: “Over the last 18 years, the SNP have failed to make any difference to major countryside issues such as sheep worrying, oil thefts and lack of adequate infrastructure. “The SNP government has battered through planning applications where wildcat numbers were notably at risk, such as the Clashindarroch 2 wind farm. “So any sudden pretence to care about native species will be treated with suspicion by conservationists.” A Scottish Government spokesman said: “We will fully consider the recommendations of the Scottish Animal ******** Commission.” Source link #SNP #banning #cats Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  13. Somalia says at least 46 militants killed in US strike Somalia says at least 46 militants killed in US strike At least 46 militants from the Islamic State group were killed in a US air strike on their positions in northern Somalia, local authorities say. “Among them are 12 foreign fighters,” said General Mohamed Ahmed, the military spokesman for the semi-autonomous region of Puntland, where the attack took place on Saturday. “We believe they come mainly from Arab countries.” The information could not be independently verified. US President Donald Trump wrote on Saturday on X that he had ordered the air strikes. In a statement, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the action, via the US Africa Command, was in co-ordination with the Somalian government. There have been repeated US drone attacks on Islamist militants in Somalia but these were not usually publicly highlighted. Last month, the Puntland authorities announced an offensive against the Islamists in a mountainous region. At the time, there was also talk of air support from the United Arab Emirates. For years, Somalia has been fighting Islamists who have carried out attacks both in the country itself and in neighbouring states. 14. Study Reveals a Simple Trick to Communicate With Your Cat Study Reveals a Simple Trick to Communicate With Your Cat A cat squints its eyes while laying on a bed. Cats have a reputation for aloofness (and flooffiness), but if you and your feline friend aren’t bonding, maybe you’re just not speaking their language. Never fear – research from 2020 has shown that it’s not so difficult. You just need to smile at them more. Not the human way, by baring your teeth, but the cat way, by narrowing your eyes and blinking slowly. By observing cat-human interactions, scientists confirmed that this expression makes cats – both familiar and strange – approach and be more receptive to humans. “As someone who has both studied animal behavior and is a cat owner, it’s great to be able to show that cats and humans can communicate in this way,” Karen McComb, a University of Sussex psychologist, said in a 2020 statement. “It’s something that many cat owners had already suspected, so it’s exciting to have found evidence for it.” If you’ve spent any time around cats, you’ve probably seen their ‘partially closed eyes’ facial expressions, accompanied by slow blinking. It’s similar to how human eyes narrow when smiling and usually occurs when the ***** is relaxed and content. The expression is interpreted as a kind of cat smile. Anecdotal evidence from cat owners has hinted that humans can copy this expression to communicate to cats that we are friendly and open to interaction. So, a team of psychologists designed two experiments to determine whether cats behaved differently towards slow–blinking humans. In the first experiment, owners slow-blinked at 21 cats from 14 different households. Once the cat was settled and comfy in one spot in their home environment, the owners were instructed to sit about 1 meter away and slow-blink when the cat was looking at them. Cameras recorded both the owner’s and the cat’s faces, and the results were compared to how cats blink with no human interaction. The results showed that cats are more likely to slow-blink at their humans after their humans have slow–blinked at them, compared to the no–interaction condition. The second experiment included 24 cats from eight different households. This time, it wasn’t the owners doing the blinking but the researchers, who’d had no prior contact with the cat. For a control, the cats were recorded responding to a no–blink condition, in which humans stared at the cats without blinking their eyes. The researchers performed the same slow–blink process as the first experiment, adding an extended hand toward the cat. And they found that not only were the cats more likely to blink back, but they were also more likely to approach the human’s hand after the human blinked. “This study is the first to experimentally investigate the role of slow blinking in cat-human communication,” McComb said. “And it is something you can try yourself with your own cat at home or with cats you meet in the street. It’s a great way of enhancing the bond you have with cats. Try narrowing your eyes at them as you would in a relaxed smile, followed by closing your eyes for a couple of seconds. You’ll find they respond in the same way themselves, and you can start a sort of conversation.” Dogs may be much more enthusiastically demonstrative than cats, but this news isn’t a surprise for cat lovers. Research in recent years has shown that our feline friends are much more in tune with their human housemates than previously supposed and that comparing them to dogs is a disservice. Cats, for example, respond in kind to humans who are receptive to them – so if you find cats standoffish, that might be a problem with you, not the kitty. Likewise, cats echo the personality traits of the humans they live with – this may be related to why cats seem to pick up when their humans are sad. They also can recognize their names (although they choose to ignore them a lot of the time). And their bonds with their humans are surprisingly deep. It’s difficult to know why cats slow–blink at humans this way. It’s been interpreted as a means of signaling benign intentions since cats are thought to interpret unbroken staring as threatening. But it’s also possible that cats developed the expression since humans respond positively to it. With domesticated animals, it’s often impossible to tell. Either way, it does seem to help forge a rapport. And that’s a good thing to know. Learning how to improve our relationships with these enigmatic animals could also be a way to improve their emotional health – not just in the home environment but across a range of potentially stressful situations. “Understanding positive ways in which cats and humans interact can enhance public understanding of cats, improve feline ********, and tell us more about the socio-cognitive abilities of this under-studied species,” said psychologist Tasmin Humphrey of the University of Sussex. “Our findings could potentially be used to assess the ******** of cats in a variety of settings, including veterinary practices and shelters.” You’re going to try it right now, aren’t you? The research has been published in Scientific Reports. An earlier version of this article was published in October 2020. Deport me back to Bulgaria, pleads benefits cheat Deport me back to Bulgaria, pleads benefits cheat Stoyan Stoyanov, 28, was sentenced to four years in prison for his role in a gang that ‘systematically plundered’ the ***’s ******** system – Central News A convicted Bulgarian benefits fraudster who wants to be deported cannot be sent home as prosecutors are still trying to recover the money he stole. Stoyan Stoyanov, 28, was sentenced to four years in prison in 2024 for his role in a gang that carried out the largest benefit fraud operation ever uncovered in the ***. The Bulgarian nationals “systematically plundered” the country’s ******** system and admitted to stealing upwards of £50 million of taxpayers’ money over a four-and-half-year *******. Galina Nikolova, 39, Tsvetka Todorova, 53, Gyunesh Ali, 34, Patritsia Paneva, 27 and Stoyanov were jailed for a combined 25 years in May last year at Wood Green Crown Court. At a confiscation hearing last week, Stoyanov, who has been released on licence, demanded to be sent back to his own country as he had a “right to a normal life”. The court heard that a deportation order was made against him and that he has been released from detention on immigration bail until the conclusion of confiscation proceedings against the gang. Because of a number of delays, the proceedings could continue into the summer. Patritsia Paneva, Gyunesh Ali, and Tsvetka Todorova, all pleaded guilty to the fraud charges Robert Morris told the court on behalf of Stoyanov that the suggestion of him holding £25 million in hidden assets – as alleged by prosecutors – was “ridiculous”. Stoyanov’s barrister argued that the gang themselves had not made anywhere near as much as was being claimed. David Aaronberg KC, the judge, said that he was also “struggling to understand” how the Crown Prosecution Service had concluded that Stoyanov, who was described as an “assistant”, could have so much hidden wealth. The gang made false benefits claims for Universal Credit with an array of forged documents that used the identities of real people, who were living in Bulgaria, complicit in the scheme and received a share of the money. They claimed the people were living and working in the ***, making them therefore entitled to benefits. So far, £1 million of the gang’s haul has been recovered. Mr Morris said that Stoyanov was now living “hand to mouth” and wanted to be deported so that he could return to his young children in Bulgaria. He said that Stoyanov’s “life was on hold” as a result of the conviction and he was not able to work, adding that he is also unable to claim benefits. During his sentencing hearing, it emerged that Stoyanov had continued to process £17,000 in fraudulent claims at the gang’s “benefits factories” after his arrest in May 2021. Stoyanov was arrested by police in May 2021 – CPS Mr Morris continued: “He has been released on licence. He is now subject to immigration bail and an order has been made on his deportation. The only reason he is still in the country is a result of the [confiscation] proceedings.” As the hearing was drawing to a close, Stoyanov stood up in court and demanded to make representations to the judge in person. Speaking via a translator, he said: “I appreciate everything that has been done by everybody in this courtroom but I am not happy with the dates. “Why is it my family, myself and my wife and our three children – all of whom have health issues – why should we all suffer? Don’t we have the right to lead a normal life the way normal people do? Where is the fairness in that?” Stoyanov is the partner of Nikolova, who is one of the gang’s ringleaders and is still currently in prison serving an eight-year sentence. Stoyanov ordered to comply Responding to the outburst, Mr Justice Aaronberg said: “The reality is you don’t have the right to a completely normal life because you have been convicted of an extremely serious offence.” While he expressed some sympathy with his situation, the judge said that Stoyanov was required to comply with the court’s orders until the confiscation proceedings were concluded. On behalf of Nikolova, Simon Farrell KC also argued that the gang had obtained benefits primarily for people living in Bulgaria and did not themselves have the vast sums that were stolen. He requested that proceedings were concluded quickly so that Nikolova could also be deported. He said: “The effect of what is going on is a constant kicking of the can down the road, and she remains in custody and is not deported.” The Telegraph previously revealed that the scheme was only uncovered after a lone Bulgarian police officer told British authorities that his home city of Sliven had suddenly become awash with cash and criminals who were “living like barons”. The group had thousands of “customers” and joked about the Department for Work and Pensions’ inability to catch them in messages shared on WhatsApp. At the sentencing hearing, Mr Justice Aaronberg said the criminals were able to operate undetected for years because of a “woefully inadequate checking system” at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). The Telegraph understands that the true cost of the fraud will probably be hundreds of millions of pounds more than the DWP’s estimate. A DWP spokesman said the gang carried out a “sophisticated, targeted attack on the benefits system”, adding: “It’s right that we bring these fraudsters to justice and recover taxpayers’ money where possible.” Fraudster ‘revelled’ in profits The gang member handed the second longest sentence was Gyunesh Ali, who was jailed for seven years. Ali was said to have “revelled” in the vast amount of money he made through the offence, which he used to fund a lavish lifestyle. Philip Kazantzis, Ali’s barrister, asked on his behalf that when he is released from prison, he is allowed access to a laptop and “games console”. Under the current conditions of his licence, he would only be permitted one computer and a phone upon release. Mr Justice Aaronberg said he would grant the order amendment. Todorova, who operated her own fraud with a similar methodology and stole just under £300,000, was handed a three-year sentence. She served 18 months in prison – half her sentence – and has therefore already been released. She is also waiting to find out whether she will be deported. It is understood that Todorova – unlike the others – would like to remain in the ***. In an interview with Bulgarian media after her release, she described her time inside British prison as similar to being on holiday. A Home Office spokesman said it did not comment on individual cases. Source link #Deport #Bulgaria #pleads #benefits #cheat Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. ‘Unjust and unjustified’: Poilievre outlines tariff response – National ‘Unjust and unjustified’: Poilievre outlines tariff response – National Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has outlined a wide-ranging plan for retaliation against U.S. tariffs, saying “we must put Canada first,” during an address to Canadians on Sunday. Speaking to the country from Vancouver, Poilievre shared a wide-ranging plan for retaliation, a day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced counter-tariffs worth $155 billion. “Common sense conservatives condemn President Trump’s massive, unjust and unjustified tariffs, which will damage both American and ********* economies,” Polievre said. U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25 per cent tariff on most goods from Canada and a 10 per cent tariff on ********* energy products on Saturday. The tariffs will come into effect at 12:01 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Feb. 4. In an address to the nation on Saturday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hit back against Trump’s tariffs with retaliatory measures that will include immediate tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods as of Tuesday, followed by further tariffs on $125 billion worth of American products in 21 days’ time to “allow ********* companies and supply chains to seek to find alternatives.” Story continues below advertisement 3:45 Trump tariffs to hit Canada on Tuesday Outlining his own seven-point plan for retaliation on Sunday morning, Poilievre said the government must respond by recalling Parliament, issuing “dollar-for-dollar” tariffs on the U.S., approaching key U.S. states that will be “up for grabs” in the 2026 congressional election, passing an emergency “bring it home” tax cut, boosting interprovincial trade, and rebuilding the military, among other points. Dollar-for-dollar tariffs should be aimed at “maximizing the impact on American companies while minimizing the impact on ********* consumers and businesses,” he said. That meant targeting U.S. products that Canada can do without, that consumers could buy elsewhere, or be manufactured in Canada — such as steel and aluminum, Poilievre said. 2:41 Trump tariffs will likely hurt U.S. consumers, negatively impact political relations Poilievre then said the “tariffs must not be a tax grab,” saying all money gained from tariffs should be put towards a “an immediate, emergency, ‘bring it home’ tax cut.” Story continues below advertisement “The tax cut would be designed to save jobs, create jobs, crush inflation and boost our economy. We need to cut taxes on work, investment, energy, home building and making stuff at home.” Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. That meant axing the Liberal carbon tax and the capital gains tax, as well as Bill C-69, and “green light job-creating projects” such as LNG plants, pipelines, mines, factories and port expansions. He then said Canada must focus on free trade across the country and “knock down interprovincial trade barriers.” “We sell twice as much to the Americans as we sell to ourselves. These interprovincial barriers are destructive.” 4:27 ‘Buy *********’: Freeland suggests ‘boycott’ of US goods amid Trump tariffs Further, Poilievre said Canada needed to “rebuild our military and to take back control of our borders,” citing ******** immigration and fentanyl overdoses as well as guns coming to Canada from the U.S. Story continues below advertisement Poilievre’s final point was to approach key U.S. states that will be “up for grabs” ahead of the 2026 congressional election. “To pressure the administration to back down, we must… let their congressmen and senators know that they will be running on a bad economic record if refinery workers have lost jobs because ********* oil can no longer make it to them, or if young families can’t buy homes because lumber is even more expensive for home builders, or families that are already suffering from inflation are paying more for gas because our energy has become more expensive due to American tariffs.” Trending Now Ford tells LCBO to pull U.S. booze from shelves Trump’s tariffs on Canada are coming. How soon could prices rise? 5:41 How Trump’s tariffs impact Canada’s economy Like Trudeau a day earlier, Poilievre also took the opportunity to address Americans during his speech. “You are our friends. You are our neighbours. We share the longest undefended border in the history of the world. You buy our products and we buy yours,” Poilievre said. Story continues below advertisement “You have a trade surplus with us when energy is excluded and when it is included, the deal is even better for you because you buy our oil and our gas at massive price discounts. Not because we’re nice Canadians, but because here at home we’ve made really dumb decisions to prevent us from exporting our energy to any other countries.” Asked at what point the Canada-U.S. relationship would be beyond repair, Poilievre said: “Our friendship with the Americans is not based on any one politician. It is based on our centuries long history of trade, a friendship of common defence, of fighting on the battlefield, arms locked together against common enemies.” He also stated that he believed Canada was “already in a trade war” that “no one will win.” 2:45 Trump offers Canada no reprieve from 25% tariff threat Earlier on Sunday, Trump again blasted Canada and other trade partners on social media. Story continues below advertisement He repeated his claims that the U.S. pays “hundreds of billions of dollars” to subsidize Canada, and once again suggested Canada should become part of the U.S. “We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use. Without this massive subsidy, Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!” During Poilievre’s address, the Conservative Leader once again railed against the idea of Canada becoming the “51st state,” saying Canada is “independent and we are a proud nation. And we will come through this as an independent and a proud sovereign nation.” Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trudeau said Canada’s response “will be far reaching and include everyday items such as American beer, wine and bourbon, fruits and fruit juices, including orange juice, along with vegetables, perfume, clothing and shoes. 20. Ukrainian men charged after army draft officer killed Ukrainian men charged after army draft officer killed Ukrainian prosecutors have charged two men over the killing of an army draft officer in the central Poltava region, leading a top general to call for swift punishment as he warned of growing disrespect towards members of the military. One of the suspects, who was being driven to a military training centre on Friday with other conscripts, called an acquaintance who then arrived at the scene and shot dead one of the accompanying officers, the Prosecutor General’s office said. The two men fled but were arrested a few hours later, the office said in a statement, adding that police had seized a hunting rifle, ammunition and two cases of hand grenades from the alleged shooter. One suspect was charged with obstructing the military and *******, and the other with aiding and abetting military obstruction. Ukraine’s war mobilisation campaign has been in the spotlight as military analysts and foreign officials describe Ukraine’s manpower shortage at the front as a key battlefield weakness. The call-up effort has been marked by faltering enthusiasm for service amid reports of draft-office corruption, poor training and instances of weak battlefield command amid reports of attacks on draft officers or recruiting centres. Mykhailo Drapatyi, the commander of Ukraine’s ground forces, condemned the draft officer’s killing on Sunday, describing it as “a red line that cannot be crossed” and calling for the perpetrators to be swiftly punished. “We have no right to silently observe the growing wave of contempt toward defenders of Ukraine,” Drapatyi said in a statement on social media. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged allies to provide more support on Sunday, saying more than 1400 Russian air strikes had targeted his country in the past week. “Every day, Russia attacks Ukraine with drones, missiles and aerial bombs,” he said on Telegram. Accompanying his statement was a video showing images of death and destruction in Ukrainian cities. Russia attacked Ukraine with about 50 missiles, nearly 660 drones and more than 760 glide bombs in the past week, he said. “Russia will not stop on its own. The world must force it to end this brutal and unprovoked aggression,” Zelenskiy said. “Strengthening our defence is absolutely necessary. We need better protection – air defence systems, long-range weapons and sanctions pressure,” he said. According to Ukrainian authorities, 15 historical buildings in the centre of the port city of Odessa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, were damaged in Russian rocket attacks. 23. ‘Eternity Is What Matters’: Christian Plane ****** Victims Transformed This Man’s Life ‘Eternity Is What Matters’: Christian Plane ****** Victims Transformed This Man’s Life As the nation continues to mourn the 67 lives lost when an Army ****** Hawk helicopter collided with American Airlines Flight 5342 Wednesday night, victims’ personal stories are beginning to be told. Among those killed was married couple Bob and Lori Schrock, farmers from Kiowa, Kansas who reportedly ran Premium Grain Inc. Their friend, Michael Simpson, told CBN News about their powerful influence over his life — and their deep faith in Jesus. He said his friendship with Bob started decades ago when Simpson, president of Freedom Gates Boys Ranch, a Christian residential program that serves kids in need in Hazelton, Kansas, was just 12 years old. Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start” “A few other men in the weight room taught me how to lift weights, kept me accountable with that,” he said, calling Bob’s influence “ridiculously encouraging.” “The weights were great, but the encouragement … as a 12-year-old kid, having people that are adults that are taking the time to walk across the gym, and encourage you, and tell you ‘good job,’ and give you advice … it’s not a common thing.” Simpson said this motivation helped him as a young person, noting that, decades later, he still maintained the same friendship with Bob. “Up until a few weeks ago … we’d see each other in the gym,” he said. “We’ve been doing it since I was a kid.” In addition to those personal acts of service to Simpson, he said Bob and Lori were also known for kindness, goodness, and faithfulness in their local community. “The best definition of integrity is doing the right thing when nobody’s watching,” he said. “And they just did the right thing and didn’t need people to know.” The couple, according to Simpson, was driven by their Christian faith and values, expressing a “tremendous, walked-out, fruitful faith.” As time went on, Simpson began to have more spiritual conversations with Bob. And, about a decade ago, Simpson confided in him about a calling on his heart: to work with at-risk kids from “hard places.” When he told Bob he was considering quitting his job and getting into this ministry, Bob gave him faith-filled advice. “I was getting ready to quit my job running cranes in the oil field to come out and be a part of the ministry full time,” Simpson said. “Bob … just encouraged [me], like, ‘Man, is this what you feel like the Lord’s wanting you to do?’” It was then Simpson realized Bob truly follows the Lord’s promptings and he was encouraged to head down the path of helping young people. Simpson suddenly understood that “this is a guy that just doesn’t go to church and just doesn’t say that he’s a follower of Christ.” Instead, Simpson saw a deeply rooted faith. The support carried well beyond that, too, as Bob ended up supporting Freedom Gates Boys Ranch, spending what was likely tens of thousands of dollars to help make the pasture look good for the kids, among other assistance. The kind deeds haven’t been lost on Simpson. “I didn’t have a lot of friends like that,” he said. “They don’t make a lot of people like that.” Simpson, like so many friends and loved ones of those lost in this tragedy, said he’s been experiencing “waves” of pain in recent days as he reflects on the loss of Bob and Lori. One area of reflection has been Simpson’s care for young boys in tough situations — something he now realizes was likely motivated, in part, by Bob’s investment in him as a child. “I’ve never really thought about that until the last couple of days,” he said. “I never really put a lot of those pieces together until I’m like, ‘Wow, well, we have a weightlifting program here at the ranch.’ You know, why? Because I know how powerful it was for me to have that program and to have people mentor me into helping me get myself better physically.” Simpson continued, “That would not be the case if it wasn’t for Bob and a couple of other guys there at the gym that encouraged me.” Looking back, he sees the pure love and care through which Bob operated — a kindness that came with “no agenda” and no expectation of anything in return. And the impact has been profound. Despite the difficulty of speaking out about his friends, Simpson said it’s important, as he knows Bob and Lori loved the Lord and would want others to know the truth. “I know, based on the fruit that they had in their life and the profession from themselves, that they have a relationship with Christ,” he said. “They have a love for the Gospel. … I know I will see my friends again.” Simpson also reiterated a past conversation he had with Bob about the importance of keeping an eternal perspective. Bob spoke about people who have a fear of losing material things. “He [said], ‘They have no idea the peace that is found when you know that none of it belongs to you,’” he recalled. “We’re here for a short amount of time, and eternity is what matters. That’s what Bob would tell me.” He continued, “And I know that that’s what he would want the world to know. It’s like true peace and hope can be found in a relationship with Christ, and you are here today and can be gone tomorrow — and eternity is what matters.” Source link #Eternity #Matters #Christian #Plane #****** #Victims #Transformed #Mans #Life Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  24. Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China could drive up prices of cars, electronics, fuel, food and more Trump’s tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China could drive up prices of cars, electronics, fuel, food and more On Saturday evening, Trump signed executive orders to impose tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), with a White House claiming the move is meant to hold the US’ largest trading partners “accountable to their promises of halting ******** immigration and stopping poisonous fentanyl and other drugs from flowing into our country.” The orders put 25 percent additional tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, the one exception being that energy products from Canada will be subject to a 10 percent tariff. Imports from China will also face a 10 percent tariff. The broad tariffs are expected to take effect on Tuesday and could have ramifications not only for American businesses, but for consumers too. Mexico, Canada and China are the top suppliers of US goods imports, each accounting for hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of products coming into the country each year, data from the US Department of Commerce and the show. Those products span a wide range of categories, from agriculture to transportation/automotive, fuel, electronics, wood, furniture, alcohol and more. Mexico and Canada dominate US imports of agricultural goods, with Mexico supplying items like fruits, vegetables and nuts, and the bulk of imported animal products like beef coming from Canada, according to and the . The two countries have also been our top suppliers for transportation equipment, including cars and car parts, and crude oil. Canada is responsible for almost 60 percent of US crude oil imports according to the , which noted in a report last month that the new tariffs “might affect the U.S. crude oil market and consumer fuel prices.” Imports of electronics have largely come from China, and Mexico follows closely behind. Trading Economics data also show machinery, toys and games, furniture and plastics among the top goods imported from China in recent years. The electronics sector could take an additional hit down the line, as Trump has said he also , along with pharmaceuticals and steel. Leaders from Canada and Mexico have both responded to the tariffs, on US goods in retaliation. ********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Saturday announced a 25 percent tariff on roughly $107 billion (155 billion ********* dollars) worth of US goods, Reuters reports. In a statement released after the announcement of the tariffs, John Murphy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Senior Vice President and Head of International, warned that Trump’s new tariffs could negatively affect both consumers and the supply chains. “The President is right to focus on major problems like our broken border and the scourge of fentanyl, but the imposition of tariffs under IEEPA is unprecedented, won’t solve these problems, and will only raise prices for American families and upend supply chains,” Murphy said. “The Chamber will consult with our members, including main street businesses across the country impacted by this move, to determine next steps to prevent economic harm to Americans.” Source link #Trumps #tariffs #Mexico #Canada #China #drive #prices #cars #electronics #fuel #food Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
