  1. Ferocious Kambosos Jr eyes new challenge, fresh glories Ferocious Kambosos Jr eyes new challenge, fresh glories Hungry as ever, George Kambosos Jr has eyes only for his next rival as he chases a place in *********** boxing history alongside the great Jeff Fenech. “Ferocious” Kambosos returns to the ring on March 22 against Indonesian senator Daud Yordan in his long-awaited first fight in front of Sydney home fans since 2016, long before his rise to a unified world lightweight champion. Stepping up to the super-lightweight ranks, Kambosos is bidding to join Fenech as a multi-division champion of the world. But that can only happen if he makes a successful debut in the 140-pound ranks against the distinguished Yordan, who is not only a formidable fighter but also a Member of the Indonesian Regional Representative Council. “My focus is on March 22,” Kambosos told AAP on Wednesday. “Yordan is no slouch. You don’t get a record of 43 wins and 31 knockouts, of two IBA titles and WBA world title challenger and formerly No.1 rated in the world by just luck. “So this is a dangerous fight. He will come with everything he has. “He’s a puncher, knockout artist, has a country behind him.” Adding to the spice, the bout will take place two days after Australia’s World Cup qualifier against Indonesia at Allianz Stadium when legions of his countrymen will be in the NSW capital supporting both the nation’s soccer team and Yordan. “He’s not going to want to be embarrassed,” Kambosos said. After first having his unbeaten 20-fight professional record shattered twice by pound-for-pound superstar Devin Haney, then also losing to the legendary Ukrainian Vasyl Lomachenko, Kambosos contemplated his future. But only briefly. The 31-year-old insists the fire still burns. “You never call it in,” Kambosos said. “I’m a warrior, I’ll fight till the day I die. “Yeah, of course I could ride into the sunset and bring my big boat out this afternoon and go fishing and have a good time with my kids and family, but I love fighting. “Where else are you going to find me? “I went 11 rounds with Lomachenko. He’s a legend, one of the all-time greats in history. “So you don’t you go 11 with him and go two times with Haney … I beat (Teofimo) Lopez. “For me, there’s so much more in the tank and now moving up a decision, I feel stronger, I feel better, more focused.” In addition to ultimately having the chance to emulate four-division belt holder Fenech as a multi-weight world champion, Kambosos could also join fellow Hall of Famer Kostya Tszyu in the history books. Tszyu dominated the super-lightweight ranks during his illustrious career and now Kambosos Jr feels “it’s time” to join the division. “It’s been a long time coming to move into the 140 division,” he said. “Making that 135 is not easy. The older you get, the harder it is, and I got to the point where it’s time to move up. “I’ve beaten the No.1 guy there already – Teofimo Lopez. “I’ve fought two hell of a fights with Devin Haney, who was a champion in recess. “I look at (Richardson) Hitchins, yes, he got a good win against Liam Paro but I don’t think he’s one-tenth of Devin Haney and Lomachenko and the guys that I’ve gone to war with. “So I get a lot of confidence coming into the division.” Source link #Ferocious #Kambosos #eyes #challenge #fresh #glories Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Child survived stranded at scene A 30-year-old woman was killed and a 7-year-old child was injured in an overnight single-vehicle collision on Highway 168 near Prather in eastern Fresno County. The California Highway Patrol reported that a concerned person called 911 on Monday morning to say the woman had failed to arrive home as expected after midnight. A “Be On the Lookout” alert was broadcast for the missing driver and the vehicle. CHP spokesperson Mike Salas said a few hours later officers were notified of a child found on the right shoulder of Highway 168, east of Qualls Prather Road. Officers and deputies responded and found that the woman’s Subaru had left the roadway and overturned several times down an embankment. The woman was found outside of the vehicle. She was identified by the coroner as Bailie French of ****** Valley. “It appears neither the driver nor the child was wearing seatbelts during the ******,” Salas said. “It remains unclear whether the driver was ejected from the vehicle or exited it after the ****** occurred.” The 7-year-old boy was taken to Valley Children’s Hospital with moderate to major injuries. Salas said the child was at the ****** site for 12 hours before going to the highway for help. He was reunited with his father at the hospital, Salas said. 3. Adin Ross and FaZe Plan to Build a Crypto-Backed GTA 6 RP Server Adin Ross and FaZe Plan to Build a Crypto-Backed GTA 6 RP Server Grand Theft Auto’s RP scene is what has kept GTA 5 so popular for all these years. If you venture onto Twitch, you’ll often see that Grand Theft Auto 5 sits at the top of the charts at any given time, and that’s because of the success of ‘GTA RP’. These servers offer a more immersive experience, allowing players to have jobs, join gangs, and generally live out virtual lives on modded servers. Big streamers have enjoyed the amount of viewers they’ve accrued while exploring the GTA RP world. Now, one of the most prolific creators of them all, Adin Ross, has joined forces with FaZe Banks, and the pair plan to create a GTA 6 RP server backed by cryptocurrency, which players will be able to ‘earn’ as they play. But Probably Not During a recent stream, Adin Ross and FaZe Banks outlined their GTA 6 RP vision, expressing their desire to create a server linked with a token or two that you can use to earn money while you play GTA 6 online. Adin Ross explained: When GTA 6 drops, me and Rick here are going to make the biggest server together. We’re going to do the best s*** ever and I promise you, it’s going to be completely crypto — everything pro-crypto about it. It’s going to change the game because GTA 6 – I promise you guys – they already bought FiveM, it’s going to be all RP. I’ll have the best and biggest server, I promise you I will. We’re going to put a lot of money into it. This is my passion. Currently, Rockstar Games supports the modding and RP communities that exist at the heart of the Grand Theft Auto franchise. However, the gaming titan does not allow cryptocurrencies to be integrated in any way with the slew of GTA RP servers out there. This will be a huge sticking point for Adin Ross and FaZe Banks’ plans. Adin ross announces GTA 6 news Historically, ventures linking games with the blockchain, NFTs, or cryptocurrencies have fallen flat on their faces. Ubisoft tried to set up an NFT marketplace tied to Ghost Recon, and it didn’t work at all. Recently, Midnight Society, the developer behind the NFT-backed DEADROP, announced a studio shutdown. The most dedicated GTA RP players live out virtual lives on the platform. They’ll hold down a job, earn in-game cash, buy and customise houses, meet up with their friends, and even accept punishment from the police when they commit crimes. All of this is done in a world populated by other players. It’ll be a big seller when GTA 6 is released, but if the track record represents anything, it’s that a solid RP ecosystem won’t exist until a few years after GTA 6 has hit the open market. 5. Dolphins’ Kaufusi switch confirmed, old foe a new ally Dolphins’ Kaufusi switch confirmed, old foe a new ally Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi is set to move up into the front row this year and partner a warhorse he once regarded as enemy No.1. The 32-year-old has made the right edge as a second-rower his domain. It is where the Queensland stalwart smashed opponents on the way to NRL premierships for the Storm in 2017 and 2020. Kaufusi has previously wrangled with NSW prop Daniel Saifiti, who has joined the Dolphins from Newcastle. Now they will be working together. The retirement of inspirational Dolphin founding captain and prop Jesse Bromwich has left a vacancy up front. Kaufusi will hand over his second-row position to new signing Kulikefu Finefuiaki from North Queensland. Oryn Keeley is another option to play in the position after returning from a foot injury. It is not as though Tongan international Kaufusi is not effective as a back-rower. It is about the make-up of his team. Kaufusi has played as a middle for Tonga and on occasion last season for the Dolphins. “I will be doing my best to come off the back fence,” Kaufusi said. “I actually started off in the front row in my NRL career. It is a different position from the back row, but I will be doing my best to see how I go.” Saifiti is in the mix to play as a starting prop for the Dolphins, and despite their rugged history as Origin opponents, Kaufusi is looking forward to the liaison. “Clubland is clubland, but it is a different beast at the Origin arena. There is a certain … dislike for the other side and I am sure we both carry that,” he said. “He is a big addition to our squad, let alone our forward pack. We will miss Jesse, but I think he will fill that void.” The Dolphins, now under new coach Kristian Woolf, are yet to play finals football after fading in the latter rounds in 2023 and 2024, after being inside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. “We will definitely be doing our best to make finals,” Kaufusi said. “We have been close a couple of times. We are still young as a club and we will definitely be pushing for it.” Source link #Dolphins #Kaufusi #switch #confirmed #foe #ally Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  6. China has delayed or redirected 600,000 tons of wheat imports, sources say China has delayed or redirected 600,000 tons of wheat imports, sources say By Naveen Thukral and Peter Hobson SINGAPORE/CANBERRA (Reuters) – China has delayed imports of up to 600,000 metric tons of mostly *********** wheat and offered some of these cargoes to other buyers as ample domestic supplies reduce demand in the world’s top buyer of the grain, two trade sources with direct knowledge of the matter said. China accounted for 6% of global wheat imports in the year to June 2024, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. With its outsized role in the market, the country’s lower intake may pressure benchmark Chicago wheat prices, which remain below $6 a bushel after falling to a four-year low of $5.14 in July. [GRA/] The country is well-stocked after plentiful corn and wheat harvests and to support local prices that have fallen as a result it does not want new wheat to arrive until as late as April, the sources said. One of the sources, a Singapore-based trader at an international company that sells U.S. and *********** wheat into Asia, said he had direct knowledge of four shipments carrying around 240,000 metric tons, three from Australia and one from Canada, that ******** buyers were trying to resell in Southeast Asia. The trader said he had heard from other traders that around 10 ships in total from Australia and Canada were being delayed resold, each carrying around 60,000 tons of wheat. “China has postponed the delivery time of several wheat cargoes that were to be shipped from Australia and Canada,” he said. “There are ample supplies in the ******** market and their local prices have fallen.” A source at a major grain trader in Australia said he had direct knowledge of two wheat shipments booked for delivery to China in February, one of which has been delayed to April. “The other is sailing, but the buyer plans to divert a chunk (of the grain onboard) to Thailand.” China has delayed or redirected a total of eight to 10 *********** shipments that were booked for delivery in January or February and has booked no shipments for March, he said. “China just doesn’t want anything showing up until April,” he said. Early last year, ******** wheat importers cancelled or postponed about 1 million metric tons of *********** wheat cargoes as growing world stockpiles dragged down prices. Still, in the first three months of 2024, China imported 1.7 million tons of wheat from Australia, down from 2.5 million tons in the same ******* a year earlier, and 923,000 tons from Canada, up from 783,000 tons a year earlier, according to ******** trade data accessed using Trade Data Monitor. Story Continues Australia begins each year with freshly harvested wheat and has been China’s main first-quarter supplier in recent years. China’s state-run COFCO, which is the importer of most of these delayed or redirected cargoes, is paying the costs of delaying shipments, including charges to hold back grain, and will take any gain or loss from reselling grain, the source in Australia said. COFCO did not immediately reply to an email from Reuters requesting comment. “China wants to protect its farmers. After a good corn crop, they have more than enough corn for feed. So now all of a sudden the wheat they were importing for feed and flour has been wound back to just flour,” the trader in Australia said. China’s state stockpiler Sinograin said on Monday it plans to add new stockpiling sites in northeast China to expand purchases of domestic corn harvested in 2024. 8. Suzuki ends production of multiple models for Australia as new safety regs loom Suzuki ends production of multiple models for Australia as new safety regs loom Up to four Suzuki models could soon become unavailable in Australia, where the popular three-door Jimny 4×4 may also face a sales hiatus. Production of the current Ignis, S-Cross, Vitara and Swift Sport has ended for Australia, with Suzuki Australia managing director Michael Pachota confirming to CarExpert they’ve reached the end of their local lifecycles. Suzuki Australia says it will have enough stock of the aforementioned models to continue selling them this year. “Whilst we have stopped production orders of these vehicles, we will have inventory to continue sales in 2025,” said Mr Pachota. “In effect, the product is not ‘axed’, more so each model specified is actually at the end of its life cycle, which was always part of our product planning. “Whilst Jimny XL is unaffected, Jimny 3-Door currently does not meet the newly introduced ADR requirements, however investigations in overcoming this are already at play and our position on this product are yet to be confirmed – sales at this stage will continue in 2025.” Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert *********** Design Rule 98/00, which comes into effect on March 1, 2025, outlines specific performance requirements for autonomous emergency braking (AEB) systems. While the above Suzuki models all come standard with AEB – except the Ignis, which doesn’t have the potentially life-saving automatic braking technology – they may not meet the requirements of the new regulation. For context, all new models launched since March 2023 have been required to meet the ADR, but all new cars and SUVs sold from March 2025 must be compliant with the regulation. This regulation has already resulted in the axing of multiple Mitsubishi models – including the ASX (which is set to be replaced by a rebadged Renault Captur), the Eclipse Cross and ******* Sport – as well as the Mazda 6. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Suzuki Australia had previously confirmed the Ignis would not be available after February 28, 2025 as it lacks AEB, but the non-compliance for the S-Cross, Vitara and Swift Sport comes as more of a surprise. While the Suzuki Jimny also comes standard with AEB, the system fitted to the three-door is different to that in the newer five-door Jimny XL. Jimny three-doors are equipped with a single camera that feeds images and data back to its safety systems, while the Jimny XL has a dual-camera system that makes it more capable. It’s understood the three-door will this year be upgraded with the dual-camera system. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Suzuki is also set to launch a handful of new hybrid models, either based on existing nameplates or brand-new vehicles for Australia. The company says the Fronx will launch in June or July, while hybrid versions of the Vitara and S-Cross “will be the subject of a Q3 announcement”. Last year Suzuki revealed a facelifted Vitara with an updated ‘Dual Sensor Brake Support II’ AEB system, which includes an expanded detection area and the ability to detect vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians directly or diagonally ahead of it. Initially due to arrive in Australia during the first quarter of 2025 (January to March), it was subsequently delayed to the second quarter (April to June). Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert A new S-Cross hybrid was previously said to be due in the third quarter (July to September), however, it’s not yet known whether this has an upgraded AEB system compared to the one in the current petrol-only model. While Suzuki also launched a new Swift in Australia last year, a replacement for the previous Swift Sport warm hatch has not yet been revealed globally. Last month, Suzuki delivered 1431 vehicles in Australia, including 712 Jimnys, 345 Swifts (understood to mostly be the new-generation model, not Swift Sports), 218 Vitaras, 83 Ignises and 73 S-Crosses. 10. India’s palm oil imports hit 14-year low as rival oils gain, dealers say India’s palm oil imports hit 14-year low as rival oils gain, dealers say By Rajendra Jadhav MUMBAI (Reuters) – India’s palm oil imports in January plunged to their lowest level in nearly 14 years as refiners replaced the tropical oil with cheaper rival soyoil because of negative refining margins for palm oil, five dealers said. Lower palm oil imports by India, the world’s biggest buyer of vegetable oils, could weigh on benchmark Malaysian palm oil prices, but support U.S. soyoil futures. Palm oil imports plunged 46% in January from the previous month to 272,000 metric tons, the lowest since March 2011, according to estimates from dealers. India imported an average of more than 750,000 tons of palm oil every month in the marketing year that ended in October 2024, says trade body the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India, which is set to publish its January import data by mid-February. Reuters reported last month that palm oil imports would sink to a multi-year low in January as refiners were shifting to soyoil. Soyoil imports in January rose 4% from a month earlier to 438,000 metric tons, the highest in seven months, while sunflower oil imports jumped 9.5% to 290,000 metric tons, dealers said. Lower shipments of palm oil brought down the country’s total edible oil imports in January by 15.6% to 1 million tons, the lowest in 11 months, according to dealers’ estimates. Negative margins for palm oil prevailed for Indian refiners last month, which discouraged them from making overseas purchases, said Rajesh Patel, managing partner at GGN Research, an edible oil trader. Palm oil usually trades at a discount to soyoil and sunflower oil, but falling stocks have lifted its prices above rival oils, whose supplies are abundant. Palm oil traditionally accounts for more than half of India’s total edible oil imports, but its share fell below 30% for the first time in more than a decade, said Sandeep Bajoria, CEO of Sunvin Group, a vegetable oil brokerage. India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, while it imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. 11. “One of the eight playable characters” Is Based on a Battle Mechanic We All Abused in the Base Game “One of the eight playable characters” Is Based on a Battle Mechanic We All Abused in the Base Game FromSoftware doesn’t really leave behind shortcuts to give the players an easy way around their games’ hardest parts. However, it is precisely what happens in Elden Ring, and its one mechanic is going to be pivotal once again in the upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign. Main Cover for Elden Ring Nightreign | Image Credit FromSoftware The culprits here are the spirit ashes, a section of usable items in the game that allows the player to summon spectral echoes of different warriors, helping the tarnished win his battles fighting alongside a friend. In the upcoming game, one character will wield them as their exclusive means of combat. Elden Ring Nightreign and The Ashen Warrior Elden Ring Nightreign will be embracing a base game’s mechanic | FromSoftware Let’s be honest, spirit ashes are the ultimate way to cheese your way out of Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Elden Ring, especially when you use one like the Mimic Tear or the ****** Knife Tiche. These allies have often felt like an easy-mode switch for the game, and now, FromSoftware has seemingly embraced the abuse, flipping it into a dedicated playstyle rather than a cheese for the players. As revealed earlier, there are going to be eight different pre-defined characters that players will get to choose from. Giving more insights on the same, the director of Elden Ring Nightreign, Junya Ishizaki, revealed the following in an interview via IGN. The element of ashes itself also appears in ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. However, the way ashes are handled is different between ELDEN RING and ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN. That’s because one of the eight playable characters is a character who mainly fights using ashes. Traditionally, the studio has always nerfed overpowered mechanics post-launch of any title. However, this time around, instead of dialing back the Ashes, Nightreign leans into the chaos and offers the player a dedicated character that fights mainly using the said mechanic. While the intention behind this move remains unclear, it is almost a dream come true for those who have always depended on ashes to fight their way through the game. Why Elden Ring Nightreign will possibly be a blazing success Elden Ring Nightreign builds up on the same foundation as Elden Ring | FromSoftware While the upcoming game might have nothing to do with Elden Ring’s extensive storyline, it is still built on the same foundation. Shadow of the Erdtree, in contrast, was a DLC that gave us a deeper insight into Miquella’s journey and how it relates to our tarnished one. However, Nightreign will be an experience that will explore the co-op aspect of the franchise. Additionally, the aforementioned Ash-based character stands out as one of the most surprising gameplay shifts that FromSoftware has ever attempted. Spirit Ashes are a beloved feature in the base game, and turning them into a full-fledged character class feels like a challenge to both casual and hardcore players. This unexpected move by the studio could ultimately end up shaping the entire fighting meta of the coming title, which has already gone on network tests and is getting ready to be released further this year. 13. Far Cry New Dawn at 60 FPS now on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Far Cry New Dawn at 60 FPS now on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S DJStotty1336d ago (Edited 1336d ago ) I simply said the following :- “We knew about Series X not running Xbox One X versions of BC games months ago” – Fact, regardless of how you want to spin it about batches. 20 games (the ones in the list) run the Xbox One code, like you said, but as stated by the teams themselves, this is to enable FPS boost. It is only an issue, for those that want the FPS boost, along with the One X enhancements, for the majority, they will take the sacrifice of resolution downgrades, to play at a higher framerate, if that is what they want. Best explained by the article itself :- “Unfortunately, FPS Boost has hard limits because no game code is being touched. If a game doesn’t run at a stable performance level, the Microsoft backwards-compatibility team can’t adjust game settings or resolution to best reach the target frame rate.” So what they are essentially saying, is they can not reprogram games they do not own, to enable the resolution to be stable, along with using FPS boost, so they have to use the base code, to enable the doubling of framerate. If they started delving and dabbling in other games source code, they will have a mightily fine and hefty lawsuit coming there way. This will only be addressed for the 20 games in question, via a developer patch. Expect these to be fixed in due course as and when. But to label things as “lackluster upgrades” when there is only 1 upgrade involved FPS boost, is nothing short of fanboyish. The has a 50:50 mix of bullish and bearish technicals: The MACD and Stochastics are bullish, On-Balance-Volume and +DI/-DI are bearish. The tie-breaker is bullish relative outperformance of the S&P 500 to the . yesterday’s price action closed Friday’s breakdown gap. The is the more bearish of the indices. It has ‘sell’ triggers in the MACD, On-Balance-Volume and +DI/-DI with stochastics close to completing the set. Since breaking the trend in December it has been moving in a sideways pattern with 20-day and 50-day MAs converging. As with the Russell 2000 ($IWM) and S&P 500, it has managed to close Friday’s breakdown gap, but the index is likely to struggle from here. The sits at an interesting juncture. There is a shorting opportunity if you are a bear as the index again tags what was once support, now resistance. It may be a slow burner though, and take a few days to play out. Going against this is the net bullish play in technicals. After the two positive days we have seen I suspect today will be one of consolidation. 17. S&P 500: Key Economic Data This Week Likely to Drive the Next Big Move S&P 500: Key Economic Data This Week Likely to Drive the Next Big Move Stocks finished the day higher in another volatile trading session. Most gains came following the report, which was weaker than expected at 7.6 million versus estimates of 8.0 million. Meanwhile, last month’s numbers were revised to just over 8.1 million. The JOLTS numbers are so difficult to predict and have such significant revisions that, in my opinion, the only numbers that matter are the revisions. Still, the liked it, stocks rallied, and the gap from yesterday’s decline was filled. That gap fill now becomes resistance at 6,040 and, with a rise above resistance, paves a path to 6,085. However, if the index cannot clear that resistance level, we will likely see the 5,840 gap, which has been open since mid-January. Getting beyond the very short-term, though, I still think that where the stock market goes from here is based on where bond yield goes, and for now, the is still hovering around the 4.5% level. But that is going to be changing over the next couple of days, I would think, given the , , , and numbers coming this week and the report early next week. The problem for the 10-year is that if it falls below 4.5%, it could head back to 4.4% and then down to 4.15%. The quarterly refunding announcement today at 8:30 a.m. will also have a say, especially if the Treasury signals that it plans to issue more debt on the back of the curve. The data is also likely to shape inflation expectations. The shows that inflation expectations are at a point of no return. 20. ‘This research will provide new directions’ ‘This research will provide new directions’ Reining in overactive oxygen could be key to unlocking the potential for battery tech that delivers impressive energy retention and durability, according to a lab summary published by Tech Xplore. The research involves common lithium-ion packs, which are pivotal to energizing our electric vehicles and other devices, as well as for storing intermittent renewable energy. The findings could help future packs hold more electricity for longer stretches of time, according to the team’s report. The breakthrough was led by researchers at South Korea’s Pohang University of Science and Technology as experts were working on a lithium-rich layered oxide material. It’s considered a next-generation cathode substance for lithium-ion batteries, per the summary. The cathode is one of two electrodes in a power pack. When a battery cycles, ions move between the anode and cathode through a substance called electrolyte, per the U.S. Department of Energy. Using lithium-rich layered oxide, or LLO, as the cathode material has been found to increase energy density by up to 20% over common nickel-based versions, the summary stated. Energy density is the amount of electricity the pack can store per pound. The LLO adds lithium and manganese while reducing nickel and cobalt content, making the component more “economical and sustainable,” per the researchers. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? However, there’s a big “but” surrounding the chemistry. Packs with this type of cathode typically experience capacity fading and voltage decay, which has “hindered its commercial viability,” the experts wrote. The reason has been hard to pin down. The Pohang team decided to turn their attention to the electrolyte, and the release of oxygen that happens where the substance interfaces with the cathode. As a result, they boosted the electrolyte composition, reinforcing the interface. This resulted in reduced oxygen flight, per the research report. “By tailoring surface reconstruction pathways, we control the overall phase and electrochemistry evolution mechanisms,” the team said in an abstract published by Energy & Environmental Science. The work garnered impressive results. The enhanced electrolyte had an 84.3% energy retention rate after 700 charge/discharge cycles. Traditional versions typically produce a 37.1% retention rate after 300 cycles, all according to the summary. The Pohang team is not alone in its impressive battery innovations. Plenty of them are happening in Korea. A pack that can extinguish its own fires is being developed by a team at Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology, as another example. Safety, reduced cost, and improved performance are common goals. Success is crucial to expanding use of cleaner battery-powered tech, now prevalent in our backyards and on our highways. By switching to electric yard tools, for example, you can enjoy a quieter, exhaust-free work day while limiting production of heat-trapping air pollution. The fumes are linked by U.S. government medical experts to increased risks for lung, heart, and other health problems. The Pohang team’s findings could soon help to power more of the cleaner tech, as the research also delivered stability, increasing the cathode’s lifespan and performance, according to the summary. “We believe this research will provide new directions for developing next-generation cathode materials,” Professor Jihyun Hong said, per Tech Xplore. 22. Henriques steers NSW to one-day crushing of Tasmania Henriques steers NSW to one-day crushing of Tasmania NSW secured an important One-Day Cup bonus point as Moises Henriques guided his side to a commanding seven-wicket win over Tasmania in Launceston. Chasing 206 for victory, the visitors always looked in control on Wednesday as Henriques delivered an unbeaten 71 from 83 ******. They reached 3-209 in just 38.3 overs, locking in the additional point that put them on top of the table with two regular-season matches left to play. Matthew Gilkes (46 off 63) and Oliver Davies (40 not out off 36) also delivered with the bat for NSW. Davies produced a highlight when he smashed Aidan O’Connor over the UTAS Stadium roof. Josh Philippe set the tone for the NSW run chase, belting six boundaries in his 30 off 22 deliveries. He looked in fine touch before attempting to leave a rising Gabe Bell (3-29, 10 overs) delivery that cannoned off his elbow and back down onto the stumps. Henriques’ composed knock included five fours and two sixes, and came after he removed both Tasmania openers and finished with bowling figures of 2-31 from eight overs. Ben Dwarshuis also shone with the ball, claiming 4-39 from 8.1 overs to help NSW bowl out Tasmania for 205 after NSW sent the hosts in to bat. Caleb Jewell (37 off 42) and Jake Doran (34 off 62) were among the five batters who got starts for Tasmania, but none went on with the job. NSW quick Liam Hatcher (1-40) provided a comical moment in the field when he fumbled a regulation catch at deep square-leg, stuck out a right boot to keep the ball alive and kicked it back up into his hand. The schoolyard hacky sack-style move was followed by a clumsy somersault after Hatcher had grasped the catch, which removed Raf MacMillan off Dwarshuis’s bowling, and was greeted by laughter from teammates. Both sides are back in One-Day Cup action on Thursday next week, with NSW taking on Queensland in Brisbane and Tasmania hosting Victoria in Hobart. 23. Hidetaka Miyazaki Created His Hardest Souls Game by Combining 2 Previous Ideas For a “Ferocious” Battle System Hidetaka Miyazaki Created His Hardest Souls Game by Combining 2 Previous Ideas For a “Ferocious” Battle System From designing brilliant level designs to creating the best battle systems ever seen, Hidetaka Miyazaki has set himself apart from nearly every other game director out there. Not only did the culmination of his experience lead to the massive success of the Souls franchise, but the purity in his craft allowed him to make his hardest game ever back in 2019. Hidetaka Miyazaki is the renowned director behind the Souls games | The Game Awards Show Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was an experimental title for FromSoftware that took off when it was first released. It even became the face of the studio for the longest time before Elden Ring, which happened to be the director’s take on an open-world game, released in 2022. How Hidetaka Miyazaki crafted Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice Sekiro remains one of the best video game titles by the director yet | FromSoftware The renowned director is known for pouring his soul into every video game he has been a part of, whether that be Elden Ring, the Dark Souls series, or the massively successful PlayStation Exclusive, Bloodborne. However, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice was where he was able to show a part of himself that he was never able to express before. The 2019 FromSoftware title takes us back to a Feudal Japan setting, with the perfect blend-in of mythology and supernatural elements along with the old-fashioned punishing level design the director is known for. Revealing in an interview via The Verge, Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed the following about how he crafted the perfect battle system for the game. The genesis for Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice came from two ideas we had for a game. The first was that we wanted to enjoy the multi-layered maps we’ve come to create from another perspective, as well as move through them with greater freedom, both laterally and vertically. The second was that we wanted to create a more ferocious, more dynamic battle system filled with tension and strategy. He essentially revealed that one of his primary objectives was to bring a new way to look at maps along with better freedom to enjoy every nook and cranny of it. Furthermore, Hidetaka Miyazaki wanted an ever-changing battle system, which would have required major tension and strategy to be utilized properly. How Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice fits perfectly into the world of Souls games Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice comes from the same pack as Bloodborne, Dark Souls | FromSoftware Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice may be the most mechanically unique game Miyazaki has ever made, but its DNA is unmistakably Soulsborne. Just like any other game made by the studio, Sekiro calls for mastery and punishes foolishness and hesitation. The game’s bosses, like Genichiro Ashina, embody FromSoftware’s brutal design philosophy. While everything about it might seem a little different from the usual Hidetaka Miyazaki world, Sekiro never truly leaves the Souls pack. Like every Souls game that has come before and after, the 2019 FromSoftware title has undoubtedly left a mark on the gaming world, mostly because of how the director chose to shake things up this time. An illustration shows a rotating supermassive ****** hole. | Credit: Robert Lea (created with Canva) Scientists have discovered that some supermassive ****** holes rotate much more rapidly than expected. The discovery came as the result of a new form of “****** hole archeology” that links ****** hole spins to the gas and dust they have consumed to grow over 7 billion years of cosmic history. The findings, courtesy of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) suggest a few things. For one, the early universe may have been more orderly than previously suspected. And secondly, the growth of supermassive ****** holes through the merger chain of progressively larger and larger ****** holes (triggered as galaxies collide and merge) may be supplemented by the objects voraciously feasting on surrounding gas and dust. “We have studied the giant ****** holes found at the centers of galaxies, from today to as far back as seven billion years ago,” team member Logan Fries, from the University of Connecticut, said in a statement. “Unexpectedly, we found that they were spinning too fast to have been formed by galaxy mergers alone. “They must have formed in large part from material falling in, growing the ****** hole smoothly and speeding up its rotation.” Measuring balck hole spin isn’t easy Despite being cosmic monsters that shape the entire galaxies around them, supermassive ****** holes with masses millions or billions of times that of the sun (and their more diminutive stellar-mass counterparts) are overall quite simple. They can be individually defined by just three characteristics: mass, spin, and, less importantly, electric charge. As physicist John Wheeler wittily explained this lack of distinguishing features: “****** holes have no hair.” “****** holes seem so exotic, but you can describe them completely with just two numbers: mass and spin rate,” Fries explained. “The problem is that mass is hard to measure, and spin is even harder.” (Left) Artist’s impressions of a ****** hole and its accretion disk with different spins. (Right) the corresponding multiwavelength spectrum that would be observed in each one. | Credit: Left: NASA/JPL-CaltechRight: Logan Fries and the SDSS collaboration The speed at which a ****** hole spins is difficult to distinguish from the speed at which the surrounding flattened cloud of gas and dust — the accretion disk — rotates. “The challenge lies in separating the spin of the ****** hole from the spin of the accretion disk surrounding it,” Jonathan Trump, team member and a University of Connecticut researcher, said in the statement. “The key is to look at the innermost region, where gas is falling into the ****** hole’s event horizon. “A spinning ****** hole drags that innermost material along for the ride, which leads to an observable difference when we look at the details in our measurements.” A cosmic fossil record The team tackled the challenging task of determining the spin of ****** holes using the SDSS’s Reverberation Mapping project. This project has been making extremely precise mass measurements for hundreds of ****** holes while also conducting detailed observations of the structures of the voids’ accretion disks. This data comes in the form of spectra, or light emitted across the electromagnetic spectrum. With this in hand, scientists can begin to measure the rate at which a central ****** hole spins. A subtle shift in the wavelength of light reveals a great deal about the rotation of the ****** hole. When material falls into the ****** hole, it also brings with it angular momentum — that rotation reveals details of a ****** hole’s past diet. “I call this approach ‘****** hole archaeology’ because we’re trying to understand how the mass of a ****** hole has grown over time,” Fries said. “By looking at the spin of the ****** hole, you’re essentially looking at its fossil record.” An illustration of a supermassive ****** hole in the early cosmos. | Credit: Robert Lea (created with Canva) This “fossil record” can be decoded when scientists compare the observed rate of spin to what is predicted. Currently, the favored model suggests supermassive ****** holes grow by mergers triggered when their home galaxies collide and merge. Because these individual galaxies have their own rates of rotation and random orientation, when they merge, these rotations could cancel out. Or, at least, they could combine together. Both outcomes should be equally as likely. Given this, scientists expect that ****** holes should spin very slowly. That isn’t what this team discovered, however. A graph of observed ****** hole spin over the history of the universe, from past to present running left to right. The thick colored dots represent the observed spins of ****** holes – blue shows rotation in the same direction as the accretion disk, gray shows little or no rotation, and red shows rotation in the opposite direction. The green oval shows what would be expected from ****** hole growth by smooth accretion; the pink oval shows what would be expected from mergers. | Credit: Left: Logan Fries and the SDSS collaborationTop right: NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI)Bottom right: NASA/CXC/M.Weiss Not only did this research reveal that many ****** holes are spinning more rapidly than expected, but it also showed that ****** holes in more distant galaxies spin even more quickly than those in the local universe. This suggests the spin of ****** holes could build gradually over time. One way that could happen is through the ****** hole’s accumulation of angular momentum by its gradual accretion of dust and gas. Related Stories: — NASA X-ray telescope Chandra discovers ****** holes ‘blow’ on their food to cool it down — Supermassive ****** holes in ‘little red dot’ galaxies are 1,000 times larger than they should be, and astronomers don’t know why — ****** holes can squash star formation, James Webb Space Telescope finds Researchers could further test this idea and verify these results using observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which, in its three years of operation, has been finding supermassive ****** holes from earlier and earlier epochs of the universe. “****** holes really do sit at the frontier of human understanding,” Juna Kollmeier, the Director of SDSS-V, the current phase of the SDSS, said in the statement. “We undertake massive surveys like SDSS to build an empirical astrophysical picture of their fundamental properties against which our theoretical models can be put to the test.” Fries presented the team’s findings on Jan. 14 at the 245th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in National Harbor, Maryland. 25. The Verdict on Alessandro Michele’s Valentino Couture Debut The Verdict on Alessandro Michele’s Valentino Couture Debut As the curtain went up in the pitch-****** theater, glowing red words ran like an English Lit ticker tape across a ****** digital screen — “eccentricity, gothic, occultism, Madame Butterfly, existentialism” — in a continuous, random and unceasing stream. Then a woman in a Harlequin ball gown, with a skirt so big it seemed more like a tent with a torso on top, materialized out of the dark. She made her way from stage left, walking slowly to the center where she turned to face the audience, then exited stage right. This exact choreography would repeat itself 48 times throughout the show as an operatic voice sang a mournful cathedral song. So went “Vertigineux,” or “Dizzy,” Alessandro Michele’s first couture show for Valentino, the brand he joined last year after parting ways with Gucci. And it wasn’t just his Valentino couture debut, it was his first couture, *******. There was excitement in the air. Despite the current seismic shifts in fashion, it’s not often that the couture, the most elite and expensive sector, gets a shot of new blood. Especially from a designer who has a history of changing how people dress. Giorgio Armani had celebrated the 20th anniversary of his Armani Privé the day before the Valentino show, and viewing the signature parade of 93 star-dusted suits and slinky, chinoiserie-inspired gowns was a reminder that, back in 2005 when he dared breach the barriers of the couture, he was viewed as an arriviste (now he’s the establishment, with a hôtel particulier of his own to show for it). Chanel’s new designer, Matthieu Blazy, will start later this year; for now, the studio team offered a smartly light-handed take on the classics: mini bouclé suits and swishy 1920s tea dresses in Jordan almond shades. That left room for some new ideas. Maybe Mr. Michele would have them. Maybe he would, at least, get beyond the corset, which has become the most ubiquitous item of the season on almost every runway (it is, after all, the fashion version of Ozempic). Ludovic de Saint Sernin even based his whole guest designer stint at Jean Paul Gaultier on the undergarment: corsets in leather, lace or brocade; corsets romantic, provocative and tough. Even corsets for men. Though the most interesting take belonged to Gaurav Gupta, who added his instantly recognizable mythological swirls to a bustier worn with oversize trousers, like a ****** come down to Greenpoint. The designer is becoming known for his statement-making red carpet gowns (Megan Thee Stallion was in his front row; Usha Vance wore one of his looks during the recent U.S. presidential inauguration) but the restraint demanded by daywear gave him a dose of unexpected cool. Still, it wasn’t as unexpected as the fact that upon entering the Valentino show, guests found a 200-page “script” on their chairs that contained a meditation on “the poetics of the list.” One that also included a quote from the Italian philosopher and novelist Umberto Eco and then list upon list of yet more words for each outfit, more than 50 for the first look alone. Clearly something different was in store. That’s one way of putting it. What transpired was, in fact, an exercise in designer self-indulgence — a fancy dress party of Shakespearean costume dramatics adorned in the pomp and circumstance of the intellectual. For all the incredible work and thousands of seamstress hours and fabulous materials that went into each piece (1,300 hours in the first look alone, according to the show notes), if the emperor got some new clothes for a royal cosplay convention, they might actually look like this. Like, for example, Marie Antoinette playing an English governess romping through the fields of Le Petit Trianon in a floral silk chiffon shirtdress with a giant panniered skirt. Or the Queen of the Prairie in a patchwork ball gown complete with Elizabethan ruffs at the neck and wrists. Or a Hussar in metallic jacquard pantaloons and matching feather headdress. Even the occasional day look, and there were some, seemed to have been unearthed from 1960s movie sets at Cinecittà studios in Rome (or the Valentino archives, as in the case of one narrow ****** dress with a panniered turquoise overskirt, inspired by a look from 1985). When Mr. Michele brought his big-tent, more-is-more, vintage bricolage to Gucci, it seemed like a relief after the nouveau riche-ness of that brand’s previous incarnation. In the context of Valentino couture, the balance has tilted away from something for everyone (even though Mr. Michele’s use of models that spanned the decades was laudable) and toward old-fashioned excess. At the end of the show, the digital screen started glitching dramatically as strobe lights came on and all the models walked out into a windstorm. At a news conference later Mr. Michele, his hair in two Heidi braids, perched on a thronelike tapestry-covered gilded chair and explained his affinity for lists, which he said originated in his childhood and was “a way of bringing order to my apparent disorder.” Fair enough, but where was the customer in all that? Maybe struggling to get her dress through the door. It’s not that couture needs to be practical, or even realistic. But it should show some sensitivity to the modern condition. Otherwise it’s just a museum piece. Source link #Verdict #Alessandro #Micheles #Valentino #Couture #Debut Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
