  3. FDA Approves Suzetrigine, First Non-Opioid Painkiller in Decades FDA Approves Suzetrigine, First Non-Opioid Painkiller in Decades The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved suzetrigine, a non-opioid painkiller, for short-term pain management. This approval marks the first time in over two decades that a new pain relief mechanism has been introduced. Suzetrigine, which selectively targets sodium channels on pain-sensing neurons, has been developed as an alternative to opioids, which have been linked to addiction and overdose crises. The drug is expected to provide pain relief similar to opioids but without the associated risks of dependency, sedation, or overdose. Targeting Sodium Channels for Pain Relief According to research presented at a major anesthesiology conference last year, suzetrigine, now branded as Journavx, works by blocking the NaV1.8 sodium channel subtype, which plays a key role in transmitting pain signals. Unlike traditional sodium channel-blocking drugs like lidocaine, which act on all nine subtypes indiscriminately, suzetrigine is designed to target pain-sensing neurons specifically. This selectivity reduces side effects and allows the drug to be taken orally rather than requiring local application. Clinical Trials and Effectiveness In clinical trials, more than 80% of participants reported effective pain relief after surgery or injury. Trials on individuals undergoing procedures such as bunion removal and tummy tucks showed that suzetrigine provided pain relief comparable to opioid-based regimens, with fewer side effects. Paul White, an anesthesiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, stated to Nature, that increasing non-opioid options could significantly reduce opioid dependency. Challenges and Future Prospects Suzetrigine has been priced at $15.50 per pill, a cost that remains higher than generic opioids but is considered cost-effective given the expenses associated with opioid addiction treatment. While its effectiveness in chronic pain conditions remains uncertain, pharmaceutical companies are advancing similar drugs targeting sodium channels, aiming to expand non-opioid pain relief options. 6. Formula 1: More Than Equal and Manchester Metropolitan University hoping to develop female F1 drivers Formula 1: More Than Equal and Manchester Metropolitan University hoping to develop female F1 drivers The main obstacle for anyone trying to enter F1, be they a man or a woman, is money. Wealth speaks loudly in the paddock and, as Stanton points out, it is one of the few sports “where your financial capability is as important as your talent”. But with women making up on average only about 10% of those in motorsport and many sponsors unwilling to take a chance on even the best female drivers, the lack of opportunity means the physiological demands of a modern F1 campaign on a woman’s body are still unknown. While Coulthard believes there is no physical reason a woman cannot compete in F1, a VO2 Max test, for example, shows a male’s score is typically around 20% higher than a female’s with the same fitness level. Stanton says it would be remiss if the development programme did not compare the two sexes. “When we do our talent identification, we look at how they stack against the current field, which is boys and girls. We then look at the female field and try and gain an understanding of how they look there,” he added. “We try to flip that lens every now and again to see it from both sides.” When it comes to competing against boys in karting, Lana Flack, from Australia, and Skye Parker, from Trelogan, Wales, know first-hand how hostile events can be when the sexes are mixed and girls are winning. Lana, 13, found herself the victim of sabotage when she was heading for championship glory, while Skye, 14, – who has also been selected as part of the FIA’s Girls on Track programme – was told “this is why women shouldn’t race” while being wrongly accused of taking another driver out. They hope that with support they will be able to break down barriers like this to fulfil their ambitions. “My big dream is to be a multiple F1 world champion,” Parker says. “But I have to get one first.” Source link #Formula #Equal #Manchester #Metropolitan #University #hoping #develop #female #drivers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  8. A Man Found a Tiny Gold Lock in the Dirt. It’s an ‘Extraordinary’ Example of Ancient Roman Craftsmanship. A Man Found a Tiny Gold Lock in the Dirt. It’s an ‘Extraordinary’ Example of Ancient Roman Craftsmanship. A tiny Roman lock made of gold was recently discovered in a ******* field. It was once damaged, but experts reconstructed the locking mechanism to see that it would have worked well. The miniature box lock was likely once used to protect a small chest, similar to today’s jewelry boxes. MISSING: a lock from a specialty Roman craftsman. Either third or fourth century A.D. Tiny, intricate, and made of gold. If found, please celebrate, restore, and study to your heart’s content. Luckily for archaeologists, that definitely-not-just-made-up ‘missing’ flyer can now be taken down, as a small lock matching that exact description was recently discovered in a ******* field. It is so exquisite (and complex) that experts had to create a replica of the object just to understand how it worked. The miniature find—which is less than half-an-inch square—is “smaller than the one-Euro coin but so much more valuable,” Georg Lunemann, director for the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Association, said in a translated statement. Constantin Fried, a licensed searcher, originally reported finding the lock in a Petershagen-Frille field. “I could hardly believe it myself when I held the find in my hand,” he said. “Such Roman [locks] are usually much larger and made of iron or bronze parts.” This one was gold. And so small. Based on its shape, technical structure, and decorations—according to Barbara Rüschoff-Parzinger, archaeologist and head of culture for the association—the lock was actually a miniature version of a more common style made during the provincial Roman era. Locks of this kind were typically used to protect chests, but the size of this one probably means it was more likely used to guard something much smaller—maybe something akin to a modern-day jewelry box. Since it was very similar to other Roman locks of the day, experts believe the miniature version was made in a specialized workshop. “The extraordinary find from Petershagen shows the high level of artistry of the provincial Roman blacksmith and locksmith craft,” Rüschoff-Parzinger said. “Perhaps a member of a local elite brought an exquisite gem back home as a souvenir or gift when he returned from Roman military service,” speculated Michael Rind, director of archaeology for the association. Of course, the key for the lock—not to mention the container it was locking—were not found, but the research team still wanted to learn more about the contraption. The outer sheet of metal was finely decorated, and investigations showed a rusted iron core inside, but traditional X-rays didn’t provide much additional detail on the inner workings due to gold’s density. So, the team tried a technique known as neutron computed tomography to gain a clear view of the internal components, which include a spring frame and guide rail, bolt, latch, and base plate. “They also showed that the mechanics are largely complete, but damaged, because people had obviously poked around in the lock at the time, probably to break it open or to clear a blockage,” Fried said. Despite the damage, the function was easily reconstructed, and restorers created a replica four times the size of the original. The tiny find is unlike any ever found in Europe, Rind said, begging the question as to whether the technically complex lock was a one-off creation—or just the only one found. Credit: Shutterstock Researchers from Shenzhen MSU-BIT University, a collaboration between Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Beijing Institute of Technology, have reportedly developed a new computational algorithm that can significantly enhance the efficiency of peridynamics (***), a non-local theory used to model fractures and material damage. The new method increases performance by up to 800 times, dramatically improving the speed of large-scale material simulations. Peridynamics is widely used to predict material failure in aerospace, civil engineering, and military applications. However, traditional *** simulations require significant computational resources, making large-scale studies slow and impractical. Associate Professor Yang Yang and her team tackled this problem by leveraging Nvidia’s CUDA technology to optimize algorithm design and memory management. Their ***-General framework achieved up to 800x speed gains on an Nvidia RTX 4070 compared to traditional serial programs and 100x faster performance than OpenMP-based parallel programs. In large-scale simulations with millions of particles, it completed 4,000 iterative steps in five minutes. For high-scale 2D uniaxial tensile problems, it processed 69.85 million iterations in under two minutes using single precision. The enhanced computational efficiency means researchers can now conduct simulations on consumer-grade GPUs instead of relying on costly, high-performance computing clusters. This has broad implications for industries that require detailed material analysis, including: Aerospace and Defense: Improved modeling of material stress and failure in aircraft structures. Engineering and Manufacturing: More efficient testing of materials for construction and industrial applications. Military Research: Faster development of impact-resistant materials for defense systems. The ability to achieve high-performance simulations on widely available GPUs also reduces reliance on restricted foreign technology. Given ongoing trade restrictions and sanctions, this breakthrough allows China and Russia to potentially advance research without depending on high-end computing hardware from Western countries. This development also marks a significant step in computational mechanics, enabling faster and more accessible simulations for material science, engineering, and defense applications. The study was notably published in the ******** Journal of Computational Mechanics on January 8, 2025, and the research team believes that this optimization could extend beyond peridynamics, improving GPU performance for other scientific computations. 19. With 30-day tariff break, will Canada get serious on easing internal trade? – National With 30-day tariff break, will Canada get serious on easing internal trade? – National Industry groups in Canada breathed a sigh of relief Monday when U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to pause tariffs on Canada after a phone call with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. But Canada is not out of the woods yet, they argue, and now is the time to dismantle some interprovincial trade barriers to blunt the impact of future tariffs Trump may decide to impose. Canada’s Committee on Internal Trade met last week to discuss how to open up trade between Canada’s provinces. “By working together with our provincial and territorial colleagues to remove internal trade and labour mobility barriers, we can unlock new market opportunities, attract investment and boost economic growth,” Anita Anand, minister of transport and internal trade, said in a statement after the meeting. The ********* Chamber of Commerce says it is encouraging to see political momentum on removing barriers between provinces, but it needs to be sustained. Story continues below advertisement “With the growing uncertainty in our trade relationship with the U.S., we can’t afford to ignore opportunities to strengthen trade within our own borders,” Randall Zalazar, director of government relations at the Chamber, told Global News. “Governments across Canada need to keep this momentum going, both to boost our economy and to improve long-term stability.” More on Canada More videos Dennis Darby, president and CEO of ********* Manufacturers and Exporters, told Global News that in the short term, Canada should prepare to support any businesses that would suffer losses or any Canadians that would lose their jobs as a result of Trump’s threatened tariffs. But there are long-term problems Canada should start tackling now, he said. “We need to start looking at those long-term things, everything from interprovincial trade barriers right through to long-term ways to attract more investment,” he said. “If the U.S. didn’t exist and we had to trade east-west [within Canada], we’re not as set up to do that as we could be.” Story continues below advertisement 6:24 U.S. tariffs: Preventing trade barriers between provinces and territories among solutions, Joly says The 2024 fall economic statement cited International Monetary Fund numbers on how much opening up internal trade could grow Canada’s economy. “According to a study by the International Monetary Fund, Canada could increase its GDP per capita by as much as 4 per cent—or $2,900 per capita estimated in 2023 dollars through liberalization of internal trade in goods,” the budget document said. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. Matt Poirier, vice-president of the Retail Council of Canada, said removing regulatory barriers would make trade more efficient, but he isn’t very hopeful. “This is one of those advocacy graveyards that everyone talks about. And we talk in circles but nothing really gets done,” he said. 0:50 Trump tariffs: Premier Houston urges Canada to remove inter-provincial trade barriers Among the sectors watching closely is agriculture, which is export-reliant. Story continues below advertisement “Over 80 per cent of what we grow in Canada — the wheat, the barley, the canola — we export internationally,” said Kyle Larkin, executive director of Grain Growers of Canada. Larkin said this is because many grain farmers find it difficult to drive their own produce to grain elevators in neighbouring provinces because of different regulations around trucking. While most grain farmers wouldn’t mind a two-hour drive across a provincial border, it’s not as simple as that. “One province may allow you a maximum weight of X, while another province may allow a lower weight. So you’re not allowed to transport as much grain as you would like. And you may have to do more round trips. It causes major inefficiencies in the way that grain farmers deliver their grain,” he said. Poirier said Canada’s retail sector has long called for a harmonization of transport corridors. “If a tractor-trailer has to stop at the Manitoba border and unhitch its wagon because it’s a whole set of different regulations going from Ontario or Alberta or take the long way around by detouring through the United States, that has a cost to it,” he said. A trades professional licensed in one province would have to get re-licensed to work in another province. Darby said Ottawa should work to make it easier for someone to get accredited in another province. Story continues below advertisement “If you’re a welder in Alberta and you’ve met the requirements, then that should be sufficient to work in Ontario, Quebec or Atlantic Canada,” he said. Zalazar, from the ********* Chamber of Commerce, said most provinces are open to mutually recognizing accreditation, with three notable holdouts. Trending Now Made in Canada vs. Product of Canada: Know the difference to ‘Buy *********’ Trump says Iran would be ‘obliterated’ if it assassinated him “A mutual recognition pilot project is already in motion, with seven provinces and three territories on board. If the remaining three provinces – British Columbia, Quebec and New Brunswick – step up and join, we could see real economic benefits. The government of Canada estimates [this would give] a $200-billion boost to Canada’s economy,” Zalazar said. Darby said this would not necessarily mean falling professional standards. “Canada’s been involved in mutual recognition regulations with Europe and U.S. for years and years. It doesn’t tend to be the lowest common denominator [that is accepted]. It tends to be who has the best regulation, which is the most comprehensive and is the fairest,” he said. Story continues below advertisement What about alcohol sales? Some experts say one sector where consumers often feel the effects of those barriers is the ***** and purchase of alcohol across provincial lines. Some provinces, however, are changing course. Starting this month, wineries in B.C. can now directly ship wine to consumers in Alberta, the result of an interprovincial deal that was agreed to last year. The process allows Albertans to order wine from more than 300 B.C. wineries in exchange for the Alberta government getting its share of applicable taxes. The agreement will run for one year and will be evaluated. Premier David Eby said in a statement that the new direct-to-consumer program is “a win” for wineries and for communities that rely on the industry. 21. Santander shares jump 7% after lender announces record quarterly profit, 10-billion-euro buyback Santander shares jump 7% after lender announces record quarterly profit, 10-billion-euro buyback A sign hangs from a branch of Banco Santander in London, U.K., on Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010. Simon Dawson | Bloomberg via Getty Images Shares of Banco Santander jumped after Spain’s largest lender reported record profit in the fourth quarter and announced plans for 10 billion euros ($10.4 billion) in share buybacks from 2025 and 2026 earnings and anticipated excess capital. The bank’s net profit picked up by 11% year-on-year to 3.265 billion euros in the fourth quarter and by an annual 14% to 12.574 billion euros across the full-year stretch, as Santander noted a pick-up in customer activity, robust margin management and growth across operations — particularly in retail. The lender added eight million new customers in 2024 to 173 million. Shares of the lender were up 7.3% at 08:42 a.m. London time. “We have announced record results for the third consecutive year as we continue to grow revenue, profitability and returns,” said Santander Executive Chair Ana Botín in a statement accompanying the results, stressing the bank’s scale to build its own technology platforms allows it to reduce its cost-to-serve and improve its operating leverage. “Our track record shows that in a challenging market we outperform peers and in 2025 we expect to grow our bottom line and profitability – with revenue stable and costs falling. And we are only scratching the surface of our potential,” she said. This breaking news story is being updated. 23. Polar Bear Fur’s Natural Oil Prevents Ice Build-Up, Study Finds Polar Bear Fur’s Natural Oil Prevents Ice Build-Up, Study Finds Polar bears rely on their thick fur and blubber to survive in the Arctic, but recent research has revealed that their fur also plays a crucial role in preventing ice accumulation. Unlike other cold-weather animals, which rely on structural adaptations in feathers or fur, polar bears benefit from a natural oil that stops ice from sticking. The discovery sheds light on how these animals remain stealthy while hunting and could lead to the development of eco-friendly anti-icing materials across various industries. Study Identifies Oil as Key to Ice Resistance According to a study published in Science Advances, researchers investigated whether the anti-icing effect of polar bear fur was due to its structure or chemical composition. Bodil Holst, a physicist at the University of Bergen, initially examined the microscopic structure of the fur, finding it similar to human hair. This led to further tests on the role of fur oil in preventing ice formation. Chemist Julian Carolan from Trinity College Dublin collaborated on experiments that involved freezing blocks of ice onto different materials, including polar bear fur, human hair, and ski skins treated with fluorocarbons. The study found that unwashed polar bear fur was as effective as high-performance ski coatings, while washed fur required significantly more force to remove ice, highlighting the critical role of its natural oils. Implications for Future Anti-Icing Technologies Pirouz Kavehpour, a mechanical and aerospace engineer at the University of California, Los Angeles, noted to science.org that polar bears differ from penguins, whose feather structure provides anti-icing benefits. The findings could inspire new coatings for skis, aircraft, and other surfaces, replacing synthetic chemicals with environmentally friendly alternatives. Researchers believe the specific ratio of glycerols and waxes in polar bear fur could be key to developing sustainable solutions. 24. Fin Smith set to start at fly-half for England against France in Six Nations Fin Smith set to start at fly-half for England against France in Six Nations Marcus Smith is set to start at full-back and Fin Smith at fly-half for England in Saturday’s Six Nations match with France at Allianz Stadium. If confirmed, it will be a first Test start for Northampton’s Fin Smith, 22, after winning his previous seven caps from the bench. It means Marcus Smith is poised to switch to his more unfamiliar position of full-back, having started England’s last eight games at number 10. England will confirm their starting XV and replacements on Thursday. France travel to Twickenham having thrashed Wales in round one, buoyed by a 53-10 victory in this fixture two years ago. Meanwhile England were beaten by Ireland in Dublin, a result which leaves Steve Borthwick’s side on a record seven-match losing run against tier one nations. “We are the England rugby team and we want to win and we know the expectations that come with it,” senior coach Richard Wigglesworth told the Rugby Union Weekly podcast. “I have no problem with people wanting to see more wins because that is what I want and what we are all working towards. “The outcome that we want is to win, so we are not avoiding that.” England are also set to make changes in the back row and in the back three, with Tom Willis understood to be in line for a first Test start at number eight. Wigglesworth says the coaches need to weigh up consistent selection with picking the right team to beat France. “What England did for many, many years was chop and change the team, so you end up with low levels of cohesion and low levels of trust in the coaches,” he said. “And that didn’t work for a long time. “We know what hasn’t worked in the past and we don’t want to be panicked into making the same mistake. “But we have to weigh up all those things and get the right team on the field.” Source link #Fin #Smith #set #start #flyhalf #England #France #Nations Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
