  1. Commander of Navy Ship Involved in F/A-18 Friendly Fire Incident Turns over Command Commander of Navy Ship Involved in F/A-18 Friendly Fire Incident Turns over Command The commanding officer of the USS Gettysburg — the Navy ship whose crew shot down one of its own fighter jets in the Red Sea in late December — has finished out his tour on the ship and transferred off, an online statement announced last Thursday. Capt. Justin Hodges was relieved as the commanding officer of the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser during an uncommon “at-sea” change of command ceremony on Jan. 30, the statement said. Despite several ongoing investigations into the friendly fire incident looming over the ship and its crew, Navy officials said Hodges was leaving the ship under regular circumstances and that the change of command was occurring on schedule. Read Next: First 10 Migrants Arrive at Guantanamo Bay and Will Be Held in Terrorist Prison However, other details surrounding the change of command — details that could offer insight into whether the ongoing inquiries into the mishap that left a F/A-18 Super Hornet destroyed at the bottom of the Red Sea impacted Hodges’ future in the Navy — were not immediately available. Navy officials at the Pentagon couldn’t immediately say if Hodges received an “end of tour award,” a commendation that is largely considered traditional in all but the most egregious of circumstances, or where Hodges’ next duty station was following his time aboard the Gettysburg. According to service data provided to Military.com by the Navy, Hodges had been the Gettysburg’s commander since February 2023. He had previously served aboard the aircraft carriers USS Eisenhower and USS Nimitz. On Dec. 22, the USS Gettysburg crew fired on an F/A-18 that had just flown off the deck of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier in the Red Sea, destroying the aircraft and forcing its two aviators to eject. One of the two sailors suffered minor injuries. The U.S. military was conducting airstrikes targeting Yemen’s Houthi rebels at the time. Since then, few details have been released about the incident and the investigations are still ongoing. However, the Navy’s top aviation officer said in mid-January that officials have already done “a big debrief, basically, to make sure we know what happened and why.” The Navy’s statement on Hodges’ change of command made no reference to the incident. Hodges’ awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, four Navy Commendation Medals and a Navy Achievement Medal, according to records provided by the Navy. “Serving as the commanding officer of this extraordinary crew has been the privilege of a lifetime,” Hodges said in the statement. Meanwhile, the Gettysburg’s new commanding officer, Capt. John Lucas, said “what struck me most about this crew was your attitude and resiliency.” “I am motivated, honored, and humbled to be your commanding officer,” Lucas said. 2. Lawmakers bash Trump’s Gaza proposal Lawmakers bash Trump’s Gaza proposal Criticism and concern spread across both sides of the aisle Tuesday night after President Donald Trump announced that the United States “will take over the Gaza Strip.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called the proposal “problematic,” adding that he does not think his constituents would be excited about sending U.S. soldiers to take control of Gaza. “We’ll see what the Arab world says, but you know, that’d be problematic at many, many levels,” Graham said. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., slammed the proposal as “deranged” and “nuts,” calling U.S. military presence in the region “a magnet for trouble.” “I don’t know where this came from, but I can tell you … that would not get many expressions of support from Democrats or Republicans up here,” said Kaine, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee. Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said there were “a few kinks in that slinky.” Asked to elaborate, he said: “Obviously it’s not going to happen. I don’t know under what circumstance it would make sense even, even for Israel. Now, if Israel is asking for the United States to come in and provide some assistance to ensure that ****** can never do again what they did, I’m in. But us taking over seems like a bit of a stretch.” Trump announced his proposal after a bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. He said the United States intends to take “long-term ownership” of the war-torn Gaza Strip, after having said earlier that Palestinians had no choice and would not “want” to return to the area following the Israel-****** war. “We’ll own it. We’re going to take over that piece, develop it and create thousands and thousands of jobs, and it will be something the entire Middle East can be proud of,” Trump said of Gaza, adding that he envisioned many people living in the area and said it could become “the Riviera of the Middle East.” Netanyahu called the move something that could “change history” and said it was a “worthwhile” proposal that should be explored. Upon hearing of Trump’s remarks, Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., clutched his face in shock, saying he was at a loss for words. “You can report that I was speechless,” said Coons, a Foreign Relations Committee member. “That’s insane. I can’t think of a place on Earth that would welcome American troops less and where any positive outcome is less likely.” Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said the proposal failed to address Palestinians’ concerns. Asked whether it was something the United States could handle safely, she said: “I don’t think it’s something that’s in America’s best interest.” Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., the only ************ American member of Congress, was blunter. She called the proposal “ethnic cleansing” and “fanatical bull—” on X. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment Tuesday night on lawmaker reactions. Some congressional Republicans voiced their support for Trump’s remarks. Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Richard Hudson, R-N.C., both members of the House Republican Israel Caucus, were among those supporting the proposal. “President Trump will never stop working to ensure historic and lasting PEACE!” Hudson wrote on X. “Let’s turn Gaza into Mar-A-Lago,” Mace said in her post. 4. Red Wall Labour MPs want tougher message on immigration to head off Reform Red Wall Labour MPs want tougher message on immigration to head off Reform A group of Labour MPs is calling for a stronger message on immigration and more investment from the government to head off the electoral threat of Reform ***. The Red Wall group has requested a meeting with Sir Keir Starmer. Some of its 40 members represent seats in the north of England and Midlands which were once Labour heartlands but where first the Conservatives, and now Reform, have been gaining ground. A recent YouGov opinion poll has suggested Nigel Farage’s party is one point ahead of Labour in voting intentions. The Red Wall group wants to see the government shout more loudly about what it has been doing to remove ******** immigrants but they also want to see more investment in northern England to shore up support. The group’s convenor, Bassetlaw MP Jo White, has also called for the introduction of ID cards. Labour Together, an influential think tank which helped Sir Keir win his party’s leadership, is working with the group. Its chief executive, Jonathan Ashworth, himself a former MP and shadow minister, told the BBC the organisation was re-orienting its efforts to take on the threat of Reform and was working closely with Red Wall MPs. Its own research suggests that Nigel Farage’s party is particularly vulnerable on health policy and the future of the NHS. Farage said that Labour should focus its efforts on tackling cross-Channel migrants before attacking Reform. Reform won just five seats at the general election last year but came second in 98 constituencies, including 89 Labour seats. The Red Wall caucus wants more investment in infrastructure for the north of England, where Reform was ahead of the Tories in dozens of seats last year. One Red Wall MP who is a member of the group told the PA news agency a key concern was that Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ push for economic growth had focused too heavily on wealthier areas in the south. Pointing announcements of funding for transport links between Oxford and Cambridge as well as backing of the Heathrow Airport expansion, they said: “That has no effect whatsoever on the red wall. “It’s not going to create growth in the forgotten areas where Reform are more likely to be second.” Source link #Red #Wall #Labour #MPs #tougher #message #immigration #Reform Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  6. Lake Shasta waters rise during atmospheric river. Here’s how full reservoir is Lake Shasta waters rise during atmospheric river. Here’s how full reservoir is Lake Shasta waters lapped 30 feet from its top after an atmospheric river dropped more than 8 inches of rain in the Redding area since last Friday — and a new storm is expected to bring more rain to the region. Last weekend’s rainstorm pushed Lake Shasta levels up almost four feet between last Friday and Sunday, according to California Department of Water Resources data. Here’s how full Lake Shasta and other North State lakes were at the start of the week, and how much more rain Lake Shasta could get. How high are Lake Shasta water levels? As of Monday, Lake Shasta levels sat at 1,037 feet above sea level — up 5 feet from the previous day, according to the state. The lake has gone up nearly 10 feet since last Friday, Jan. 31. California officials consider Lake Shasta full when water levels reach 1,067 feet above sea level, so there’s room for more. That’s good since two more storms — the first of which started Monday — could drop another 3.5 inches for rain by Friday, the weather service forecasted. Anderson Creek floods property along ****** Ferry Road south of Anderson on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025. An atmospheric river moving over the Redding area through the weekend dumped about 8 inches of rain. Note to readers: If you appreciate the work we do here at the Redding Record Searchlight, please consider subscribing yourself or giving the gift of a subscription to someone you know. How full is Lake Shasta? As of midnight Monday, Lake Shasta held 82% of its total capacity. That’s about a fifth more (120%) than it usually holds this time of year, according to historic data from the California Department of Water Resources. How many families would it take to drink, wash, use up water currently in Lake Shasta? Just for fun, here’s an approximation of how many California families it would take to use up the water currently in Lake Shasta in a calendar year. Scientists measure water volume in acre feet. One acre-foot is equivalent to 325,851 gallons of water. That’s “considered enough water to meet the needs of two families of four for one year,” according to the city of San Diego. As of Monday morning, Lake Shasta held not quite 3.6 million AF of its 4.55 million AF capacity. That’s enough for about seven million families for a year — not accounting for major variables like evaporation, according to San Diego’s formula. How much have Lake Shasta waters changed since the beginning of the wet season? Winter weather fluctuated from very dry, to very wet, to very dry again since November. Lake Shasta waters fell to their lowest point of 2024 (985.52 feet) on Nov. 18, according to the state. More: How deep are Lake Shasta, Lake Oroville, 5 other popular California reservoirs? Then lake levels went up 40 feet by Jan. 2, 2025, following six weeks of rain and an unusually wet December. The weather service reported Redding got 19.76 inches of rain between Oct. 1, 2024 and Jan. 9, 2025, compared to its historical average of 13.29 inches. Until last Friday, most of January was bone dry, with unusually warm afternoons and freezing cold mornings. Trinity Lake, as seen from Trinity Dam, was 85 percent full on May 1, 2024. How full are other North State lakes, Trinity and Oroville? Lake Shasta isn’t the only North State lake benefiting from winter storms. The California Department of Water Resources reported the following water levels at these far Northern California reservoirs. Data reflects changes between midnight on Friday and midnight on Tuesday. Lake Oroville in Butte County went up more than 10.21 feet since Friday morning. It’s 79% full. That’s 131% of its historic average for this time of year. Trinity Lake (formerly Clair Engle Lake) located in Trinity County, northeast of Weaverville, went up 3.26 feet. It’s 80% full, 125% of its historic average. 8. Hamstrung Juan Mata in doubt for ALM Sydney derby Hamstrung Juan Mata in doubt for ALM Sydney derby Western Sydney marquee player Juan Mata concedes a hamstring injury could sideline him for a cut-throat Sydney derby. Mata was forced out of last Friday’s 1-0 win over Brisbane after just 11 minutes and faces a race against time for Saturday night’s A-League Men clash with Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium. “Unfortunately, I felt my hamstring the day before the game,” Mata said on Wednesday. “I felt something in training, but I thought it was fine. “I woke up OK, warm up, (felt) nothing, but in the game, taking the first corner … I felt something in the hamstring, and I tried to keep going, but I couldn’t really run or sprint, so I thought it was better to stop as a precaution. “And let’s see. I’m feeling better every day, so let’s see. “I had a little injury, so there’s something there. I was hoping that there was nothing in the scan, but the scan was not clear. So I’m taking every day as it comes and see how I feel for the weekend … but a hamstring is never good news.” A decision will likely be made on Friday as to whether the 36-year-old plays in the high-stakes clash. The eighth-placed Wanderers sit just three points behind fifth-placed Sydney. “If I end up not playing it’s a pity, because, of course, this is a very nice game to play, and hopefully a good game for us,” Mata said. “The table now is very tight. We are almost on the same amount of points, so it’s important to get points. Now the season is getting to a key point. “So yeah, I’ll try my best to be in the game, because, of course, the atmosphere and everything is going to be so good. Let’s see how I develop until Friday, Saturday.” Sydney marquee player Douglas Costa, who has battled his own soft-tissue injuries, saw the lighter side of things. “I hope no,” Costa joked when asked if he knew whether Mata was playing. “Nah, I’m just kidding – he’s a friend of mine. “He’s an amazing player, so for the show, if he’s on the field, it’s going to be better. “I’d love to see him play even more now against me in one of the biggest games in Australia.” Brazilian Costa, 34, returned earlier than expected to feature against Adelaide last Friday and will likely be involved off the bench. “I’m really happy to be back at the right time, then I can help my teammates in one of the most important games for us in the season,” Costa said. “Of course it didn’t surprise me, because I worked every day to be fit and be well, to go again.” Source link #Hamstrung #Juan #Mata #doubt #ALM #Sydney #derby Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  9. Ancient Roman helmet turns up in unusual location: ‘Exceptionally rare’ Ancient Roman helmet turns up in unusual location: ‘Exceptionally rare’ Archaeologists recently found an ancient Roman helmet in an unusual location, a Danish village. Vejle Museums announced the discovery of numerous ancient artifacts, including the Roman armor, in a press release published Jan. 29. The excavation took place in the town of Løsning in the fall. The statement explained that archaeologists noticed “two unusual iron plates” during a dig and were initially unsure what they were. “At first glance, it was unclear what these plates had belonged to,” Vejle Museums said. “However, using X-ray imaging, conservators and archaeologists were able to see beneath the thick layers of rust covering the objects. Metal Detectorists Discover Hoard Of Priceless Gold Coins Dating Back To Biblical Times Danish archaeologists found various items at a dig site, including an ancient Roman helmet. “The result revealed an extremely rare find: the remains of a Roman helmet.” Read On The Fox News App This marks the first time an ancient Roman helmet was found in Denmark. According to the press release, the two plates “consist of a neck guard and a decorated cheek guard from a so-called crest helmet, a type used in the Roman Empire in the 4th century.” Metal Detectorists Stumble Across 1,200-Year-old Treasure, Unusual Christian Artifact In Viking Graves Historians digitally reconstructed the Roman helmet to show what it may have looked like. “Roman helmet finds from the Iron Age are exceptionally rare in southern Scandinavia, and there are no direct parallels to this discovery,” officials said. In addition to the Roman artifacts, multiple Iron Age weapons and armor were found, including “an incredibly valuable chainmail shirt.” Experts believe it was buried by a chieftain. “The manner in which the war equipment was buried suggests it was an offering to higher powers,” the release noted. Click Here To Sign Up For Our Lifestyle Newsletter A variety of artifacts, originating from the Iron Age to Ancient Rome, were recently unearthed in Denmark. The chainmail was found along with fragments of bronze neck rings, or “oath rings,” which officials said symbolized power and influence. “Only a very small number of chainmail shirts from the Iron Age have been found in the southern Scandinavian region,” the statement noted. “The chainmail from Løsning Søndermark is particularly remarkable as it is the first discovered in association with a settlement, rather than in a burial or bog find. For more Lifestyle articles, visit foxnews.com/lifestyle “Producing chainmail required expertise, access to resources, and a significant, sustained effort. As a result, these costly pieces of armor were owned exclusively by the highest warrior elite in society.” The Roman helmet is the first of its kind found in Denmark. Archaeologists will now analyze deposits where the weapons were buried to determine if there was any greater significance to the burials. “The nature of these deposits suggests that the weapons were part of ceremonies or sacrificial rituals associated with a chieftain’s residence,” Vejle Museums said. “This indicates that they are not remnants of a weapons workshop, military barracks, or similar contexts. “Ongoing excavation work and subsequent analysis of the materials will hopefully reveal whether the equipment belonged to local warriors or if it represents spoils of war from a defeated enemy.” Original article source: Ancient Roman helmet turns up in unusual location: ‘Exceptionally rare’ Source link #Ancient #Roman #helmet #turns #unusual #location #Exceptionally #rare Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Florida man follows, pulls gun on driver at intersection: police Florida man follows, pulls gun on driver at intersection: police The Brief A man was arrested over the weekend after he allegedly pointed a gun at a driver at a Clermont, Florida, intersection. Robert Bloebaum faces a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. CLERMONT, Fla. – A Florida man was taken to jail after he allegedly pulled out a gun on a driver at a Clermont intersection on Sunday morning. Road rage investigation The backstory On Feb. 2, at around 8:37 a.m., Clermont police officers responded to the victim’s home for a report of a road rage incident. The victim said he left his residence around 8 a.m. to go to an auto parts store. When he approached the intersection of North Ridge Boulevard and Grand Highway, he said a silver Toyota 4Runner pulled out in front of his vehicle and was driving well under the speed limit. The victim said he drove around the Toyota, at which point the driver began “aggressively” following him “too closely,” according to the arrest report. MORE HEADLINES: The victim then sped up to create distance and stated it appeared “the driver was trying to play chicken with him.” At the intersection of Shady Nook and East Desoto Street, both the victim and the Toyota driver got out of their vehicles. The victim told law enforcement he was going to ask the driver why he was following him and why he almost struck his vehicle, but that’s when the suspect pointed a gun at him and told him to leave, authorities said. The victim left, and continued to the auto parts store. After shopping inside the store, the victim noticed the Toyota was in the parking lot just a few spots from his vehicle. The suspect reportedly continued to follow the victim in his vehicle, but the victim eventually sped off, losing sight of the vehicle. He went home and reported the incident. Who is Robert Bloebaum? What we know Robert Bloebaum, 47, of Clermont, was identified as the suspect and was found driving the same vehicle the victim described to law enforcement. Police also found a loaded 9mm handgun on him. Booking photo of Robert Bloebaum (Credit: Lake County jail) The other side Bloebaum told police he had slowed down for Sandhill cranes crossing the road when the victim’s car drove past him. He admitted to following the victim and believed they were “playing chicken,” according to the arrest report. Bloebaum claimed the two got out of their vehicles at an intersection but denied pointing a gun at the victim, officials said. Regarding his Toyota being parked outside the auto parts store, Bloebaum said it was merely a coincidence, as he is a “frequent customer” there, the report stated. He was arrested on a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was booked into the Lake County jail but was released after posting bail. A criminal history search revealed no prior assault or battery arrests for him in the past six months, investigators said. 14. Electric vehicle sales brake as car market slows again Electric vehicle sales brake as car market slows again *********** drivers have put the brakes on new car purchases for the sixth month in a row, with electric vehicles suffering a particularly slow start to the year. The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries revealed the extent of the slowdown on Wednesday, with sales figures from January showing the market fell 3.3 per cent or by almost 3000 vehicles. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles as well as SUVs remained the only models resistant to the downturn, as typically popular categories like utes and diesel vehicles tumbled in popularity. Continued tough economic conditions remained the driving factor behind the slump, chamber chief executive Tony Weber said, which saw most fewer new vehicle sales across most categories. Passenger vehicle sales fell by 22 per cent during the month, for example, while sales of light commercial vehicles, such as utes and vans, were down by 10 per cent, and heavy vehicles down by 3.2 per cent. Electric cars suffered one of the biggest sales drops, however, with *********** drivers buying 3832 EVs in January compared to more than 8300 the month before. “Sales of battery electric vehicles were remarkably low and, based on data from all sources, EVs accounted for just 4.4 per cent of sales – the lowest since October 2022,” Mr Weber said. “This is a major concern because consumers are turning away from EVs at the time the Commonwealth government has introduced the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard.” The standard, which came into effect in January, sets an emissions limit on vehicle brands to encourage the ***** of more environmentally friendly vehicles. Penalties for exceeding the standard’s emissions targets won’t be enforced for six months, but Mr Weber said the government should review other incentives to win over buyers. “The government needs to reconsider the steps it can take to build consumer confidence in EVs, otherwise their ambitious NVES targets will not be met,” he said. Unlike electric, petrol and diesel vehicles, however, hybrid cars defied the sales trend to record more than 14,000 sales during January – an increase of more than 50 per cent. Plug-in hybrid vehicles also grew in popularity, reaching 1908 sales, and Electric Vehicle Council chief executive Julie Delvecchio said when combined with battery-powered vehicles, Australians had now bought more than 300,000 electrified vehicles since 2011. “We know we’re far from mission-accomplished – there’s still much more work to be done to drive wider EV adoption – but Australia is heading in the right direction,” she said. SUVs remained the most popular style of vehicle for *********** drivers during January, according to the figures, with sales rising by almost six per cent and making up more than 60 per cent of all new cars sold. Toyota’s hybrid SUV, the RAV4, also claimed the title for most popular vehicle during the month, besting Ford’s Ranger ute and the Toyota HiLux. 18. AI may move at the speed of light but Nvidia’s machine learning model for frame generation took 6 years to develop AI may move at the speed of light but Nvidia’s machine learning model for frame generation took 6 years to develop When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Getty Images Earlier today we reported how Nvidia’s DLSS upscaling tech went from an idea popping out of CEO Jensen Huang’s head to a SIGGRAPH keynote in just two weeks. Now it turns out it took rather longer to develop the AI model for Nvidia’s frame generation technology, fully six years in fact. Again, the revelation comes from a new book on Nvidia, The Nvidia Way: Jensen Huang and the Making of a Tech Giant by Tae Kim. Development of Nvidia’s Frame Generation technology, which inserts AI-rendered game frames in between frames rendered in the traditional GPU 3D pipeline, was headed up by Bryan Catanzaro at Nvidia Research. Author Kim says Catanzaro spent six years developing a sufficiently accurate AI model for the frame generation feature. “While we were working on it, we saw continuous improvement in the quality of results, so we kept working. Most academics don’t have the freedom to work on one project for six years because they need to graduate,” Catanzaro explains in the book. Kim says frame generation and DLSS more broadly are poster examples of Nvidia’s new approach to gaming graphics. While Nvidia is still committed to rolling out new GPUs on a regular basis, Nvidia Research and other groups within the company would pursue additional “moonshots” in parallel. As we revealed in the other story, Jensen Huang instantly saw how DLSS could be used to increase the prices of Nvidia GPUs. The clever aspect of DLSS and frame gen in that regard is that it doesn’t scale costs. Nvidia can decide, for instance, to make a more complex GPU. That will not only cost more to develop, but each and every GPU will cost more to manufacture. But with DLSS and its adjacent technologies, for the most part Nvidia only has to pay to develop the algorithms which then work across a suite of different GPUs without the need for a huge investment in hardware features and without dramatically increasing the cost to manufacture GPUs. It’s a very clever approach, both in terms of increasing performance and scaling profit margins up. In that sense, it’s the perfect technology. The only downside for us gamers is that we can see all the money Nvidia is making at the same time as only releasing incremental increases in traditional GPU raster performance. In an ideal world, Nvidia would put just as much effort into scaling the traditional rendering hardware as it does into these new AI-accelerated features. However, the new RTX 50 series hasn’t been a huge step forward in raw performance, instead relying on Nvidia’s new Multi Frame Generation technology to boost performance using AI. That’s good for Nvidia’s bottom line, no doubt, but we’d much prefer to see the underlying capability of Nvidia’s GPUs scale a bit more, too. 20. Housing Minister John Carey blames former Barnett Liberal government for housing crisis Housing Minister John Carey blames former Barnett Liberal government for housing crisis Housing Minister John Carey has blamed the “mess” left behind by the Barnett government in 2017 for Perth’s homeless crisis, four weeks out from the State election. At a forum organised by Shelter WA on Tuesday night, the Greens set the biggest target for social housing, promising to use their votes in a new-look legislative council to push for an extra 5000 social and affordable homes each year and at least 10 per cent in new private developments. “It’s hugely urgent and, unfortunately, we have frankly been treading water in housing on every statistic,” Greens MLC Brad Pettitt said on Wednesday. “We’re really happy to back in what the sector is calling for, WA can afford it. “We hope that we will have the balance of power in the upper house after this election and we will be really using that to push government to actually deliver on things.” Mr Carey said the Government has added 2800 social homes since 2021, but The West *********** revealed this week that WA’s public housing stock remains about 400 short of 2017 levels. “Everyone understands in this room that every State is facing the critical challenge of housing supply,” he told the Shelter WA forum. “I want to assure everyone our Government takes this task with serious and resolute focus to boost social housing in WA and provide Western Australians with safe and secure housing. We know that providing a house transforms someone’s life. It gives them the security, the emotional well being to move on to another stage. “But let’s not forget the history of what we inherited. We inherited a mess . . . we inherited a decrepit and ageing housing system.” Shadow Housing Minister Steve Martin said Labor had failed to adapt to the current economic climate, as he committed to transfer ownership of 1000 new social homes to community providers – if elected. He said the Liberal party won’t outbid Labor, but won’t undo $140 million committed to homeless services in the budget. “We will boost the asset base of those providers by about $500 million, enabling them to unlock new investment in the sector,” Mr Martin said. “WA’s community housing providers do fantastic work supporting vulnerable Western Australians, our policy will support that work and build resilience and capacity in the sector.” Nationals leader Shane Love promised to invest $10 million to combat rough sleeping and expand data collection via the by-name list, which identified 1869 people homeless in December in Perth, Rockingham, Mandurah, Bunbury and Geraldton. “We know homelessness has worsened in WA,” Mr Love said. “The real figure is likely even higher because WA Labor has failed to expand the program beyond a handful of locations.” Labor has promised to spend $10.4 million to expand the HEART outreach program in Perth and Mandurah, if elected, $6 million for more community housing and $3.1 million for support services in Bunbury. 21. Adani, ***** Profit Misses Add to Alarm Over India Stocks Outlook Adani, ***** Profit Misses Add to Alarm Over India Stocks Outlook (Bloomberg) — A deepening slowdown in corporate earnings is fueling fresh concern over India’s $4.1 trillion stock market, and threatening to undermine Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s latest efforts to revive growth. Most Read from Bloomberg Citigroup Inc. and HSBC Holdings Plc are among banks that have cut profit forecasts as the latest earnings from some of India’s top firms, including Adani Enterprises Ltd. and ***** Motors Ltd., trailed estimates. Local brokerage JM Financial Ltd. expects the benchmark NSE Nifty 50 Index’s earnings to grow less than 5% this fiscal year, the slowest pace since the pandemic. Some strategists say even that forecast may be too optimistic. To make matters worse, the global backdrop is becoming more challenging as US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies spur uncertainty and raise the odds of further dollar strengthening. Some strategists are skeptical that the record $11.5 billion in tax cuts announced by Modi’s government last week will be enough to counter these headwinds and help earnings recover. “There is room for downward revisions as we don’t think there is going to be a V-shaped recovery in earnings,” Rajat Agarwal, an Asia strategist at Societe Generale Pvt., said by phone. “Tax cuts are not a big positive for the earnings recovery, as consumption has a lower multiplier effect on the economy than capex.” At the heart of the issue is India’s economic slowdown. The global growth champion is stumbling after a pandemic-era consumption ***** slowed and inflation spiked. The government has lowered its growth projection for the fiscal year to the weakest since the pandemic. JM Financial expects profits for the three months ended December to be up just 4.4% year-on-year, making it a third straight quarter of single-digit growth. Out of the 39 Nifty 50 companies that have posted results so far, earnings for 19 have missed estimates, data compiled by Bloomberg show. And markets are punishing weak results. ***** Motors, the Indian parent of luxury sport utility vehicles Jaguar Land Rover, saw its shares plunge more than 7% after it reported a 22% drop in net income, missing expectations. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd., the biggest carmaker, also saw its stock drop after profit missed estimates, hurt by higher input costs mainly due to the rupee’s slide against the US dollar. Story Continues Shares of Adani Enterprises, the flagship firm of the ports-to-power Adani conglomerate, dropped more than 5% intraday on Jan. 30 after it reported a 97% plunge in quarterly profit, weighed down by its coal trading unit and a foreign-exchange loss. The dismal earnings picture comes at a difficult time for Indian stocks, which are struggling to find catalysts to stem a selloff that has erased over $600 billion from the market value of companies on the MSCI India Index since a peak in late September. Global funds have pulled more $20 billion on a net basis during this *******. They were sellers for 22 straight days through on Feb. 3, making it a record streak for daily withdrawals in data compiled by Bloomberg. India’s equity downturn comes after a yearslong rally that saw the Nifty 50 gauge cap a ninth straight annual gain in 2024, making the market a favorite among global investors. The momentum faltered after Modi’s party shifted its focus toward ******** projects after an unexpected loss of its parliamentary majority in June. The pivot has slowed investment-driven growth, the key driver behind the market’s over 200% surge since the pandemic, and put pressure on corporate profits. There are expectations that as the positive impact of tax cuts flows through the economy, consumer firms — which account for about 18% of the main index — will support profitability. JM Financial estimates that Nifty 50 earnings can rebound to 18% in the next fiscal year, driven by greater urban spending, recovery in rural demand and the ongoing expenditure on infrastructure. For now though, corporates remain concerned about weak demand. Mentions of the word “slowdown” in earnings calls of companies in the Nifty 500 — the broadest gauge in India — hit the highest level since the pandemic, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. “Consumption is returning as key investment theme but it would be too early to say it alone can revive earnings growth,” said Mohit Khanna, a fund manager at Purnartha Investment Advisers Pvt. While the tax savings may spur spending “it is a little difficult to assess what would be the quantum of earnings growth,” he said. Most Read from Bloomberg Businessweek ©2025 Bloomberg L.P. 23. Celtics flex muscles to win battle of NBA heavyweights Celtics flex muscles to win battle of NBA heavyweights Jayson Tatum scored 22 points and Derrick White added 20 as the Boston Celtics showed their championship credentials with a win over the Cavaliers in a match-up of the top teams in the NBA’s Eastern Conference. Boston, the defending NBA champions, executed in the final minutes on Tuesday night (Wednesday AEDT) and held off the Cavs (40-10), who lost for just the fourth time in 28 home games. Kristaps Porzingis added 19 points and Jaylen Brown 16 with nine rebounds as Boston won their fourth straight game and improved to 2-1 against Cleveland this season. The Celtics have a 36-15 overall season record. Donovan Mitchell scored 31 points and Darius Garland 25 for the Cavs, who cut a 15-point deficit to four in the fourth quarter. But the Celtics, who have won four straight, didn’t buckle and responded in every crucial moment to put away the Cavs. In Chicago, *********** Josh Giddey scored 24 points and rookie Matas Buzelis matched that tally as the Bulls cooled down the visiting Miami Heat 133-124. Giddey was a constant threat during his 30 minutes on the court, complementing his 24 points with five rebounds and seven assists. Coby White scored 22 points and Ayo Dosunmu added 21 and nine assists for the Bulls, who played their first game since trading two-time All-Star Zach LaVine to Sacramento on Sunday. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo each scored 23 points for Miami. The Bulls trailed 114-118 with five minutes to play, but an 11-2 run helped secure the win. Bulls center Nikola Vucevic, also the subject of trade speculation, finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. In Philadelphia, Joel Embiid had 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in his first action in a month to lead the 76ers to a 118-116 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, who fell to 0-2 since trading star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. Embiid recorded his first triple-double of an injury-plagued season in which he’s appeared in just 14 games. A left knee injury sidelined the seven-time All-Star for the previous 15 games, and he wore a large brace on the knee. But he looked like his usual self, especially down the stretch. Embiid’s layup with 22 seconds left put Philadelphia ahead by a point. He grabbed a rebound on the Mavericks’ next possession, then defended the final play of the game when Dallas turned it over. Tyrese Maxey had 33 points and 13 assists for the Sixers. Kyrie Irving scored 34 points for the Mavs and Naji Marshall added 19. Newly acquired Anthony Davis (abdominal injury) didn’t play but was courtside after Sunday’s trade that brought him to Dallas in exchange for Doncic. Max Christie, also part of the deal, scored 15 points. *********** Dante Exum had a solid game for the Mavs, contributing 14 points, four assists and a rebound in his 20 minutes on court. In Toronto, Karl-Anthony Towns had 27 points and 20 rebounds and Jalen Brunson scored 28 points as the New York Knicks held on to beat the Raptors 121-115 for their eighth win in 10 games. And in New York, Keon Johnson and D’Angelo Russell made three-pointers in the final 10 seconds as Brooklyn stunned Houston 99-97 for their first home victory in two months. 24. Ice storm takes aim at Midwest and Northeast. Here’s the forecast. Ice storm takes aim at Midwest and Northeast. Here’s the forecast. A winter storm could bring sleet and freezing rain to the Midwest and Northeast late this week, potentially causing treacherous travel conditions and power outages for millions of Americans from Minnesota to Maine, forecasters say. According to AccuWeather, warm, humid air from the south will collide with arctic air from the north as a low-pressure system moves east — atmospheric ingredients that could trigger accumulating snow and dangerous ice along its northern edge. “As the mild air mass clashes with frigid air farther north, the ingredients for a major ice storm are expected to be in place beginning Wednesday across a zone spanning from the Midwest to the Great Lakes,” AccuWeather meteorologist Brandon Buckingham warned. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. The system will then move east, bringing snow and ice to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast by Thursday. How much ice and snow is expected? National Weather Service/NOAA Up to a quarter inch or more of ice is possible in Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio, AccuWeather reported. And up to a half inch is possible for parts of the central Appalachians north through Pennsylvania and southern New York. One to three inches of snow is expected in parts of northeastern Pennsylvania, eastern New York, northern Connecticut, western and central Massachusetts, as well as Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, per AccuWeather, with up to 6 inches or more possible in higher elevations. What makes ice storms so dangerous? Commuters navigate a snow-and-ice-covered road in Chicago in 2022. (Scott Olson/Getty Images) Ice accumulation could make for hazardous road conditions for those in the storm’s path, which include large portions of Interstates 80 and 94. For cities along the I-95 corridor, including Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, a briefer ******* of icing is expected before a changeover to rain. The same areas of the Midwest and Northeast could face power outages as the ice and freezing rain will be followed by cold, gusty winds behind the storm. Wind gusts of 40-50 mph are expected across the Great Lakes on Thursday, and gusts in excess of 30 mph are possible across the Northeast Friday. “A light glaze of ice can create treacherous driving conditions on bridges, highways and ramps in a matter of seconds,” AccuWeather chief meteorologist Jonathan Porter explained. “A half inch of ice accumulation can add 500 pounds of extra weight or more to power lines. Tree branches coated in ice can snap and fall on power lines.” Stormy start to February The ice storm is just the start of what forecasters say could be a stormy February for much of the same region. Behind this system is a second winter storm that could bring snow and ice from the upper Midwest and Great Lakes to parts of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast beginning on Saturday. A third storm is possible early next week, AccuWeather said, with “the potential of colder air and more moisture that could bring snow and icy impacts to a larger area.” And February is historically the month with the most snowstorms in the Northeast. According to NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information, more “high-impact” snow storms occur in February than in any other month.
