Santorini earthquake swarm intensifies but likely won’t trigger volcano Santorini earthquake swarm intensifies but likely won’t trigger volcano When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The earthquake swarm shaking the island of Santorini is intensifying. . | Credit: Aris Messinis/AFP via Getty Images Greek authorities have closed schools and deployed emergency crews as a swarm of earthquakes intensifies near the volcanic island of Santorini. Scientists aren’t expecting Santorini or other volcanoes in the region to erupt, but they warn more powerful earthquakes could be coming. People on Santorini began feeling tremors last week as a cluster of underwater earthquakes broke out beneath the Mediterranean’s Aegean Sea. These small earthquakes — mostly magnitude 3.5 or less — continued to intensify on Monday (Feb. 3). The largest earthquake so far was a magnitude 5, which struck 21 miles (34 kilometers) northeast of Santorini at 2:27 p.m. local time (7.27 a.m. EST), according to the University of Athens’ earthquake tracking website. The Greek authorities have responded to the earthquakes by ordering precautionary measures on Santorini and nearby islands, all of which are popular tourist destinations, the Associated Press reported. Santorini sits on the exposed part of a largely underwater volcano called the Santorini caldera. However, researchers believe the earthquakes there are driven by the movement of plates, or plate tectonics, rather than volcanic activity. David Pyle, a professor of Earth sciences at the University of Oxford who has studied volcanos in the Santorini caldera, told Live Science that the earthquakes by Santorini are likely caused by a series of faults — or zones where two blocks of rock move or slip against each other. However, he noted that the earthquakes were “unusual.” “The problem with this event is that we’ve just seen earthquake after earthquake after earthquake,” Pyle said. “It’s all underwater, and so it’s really hard to anticipate what’s going to happen next.” Related: Yellowstone National Park earthquake shakes hottest and oldest geothermal area The Aegean Sea sits on a small plate of crust, which is stretching as the nearby African plate slides beneath the Eurasian plate. Pyle noted that stretching in the Aegean’s crust creates stresses that move the faults driving the earthquakes. This isn’t the first time Santorini has experienced a series of small, concentrated earthquakes, known as an earthquake swarm. Magma moving beneath Santorini triggered a swarm around the island in 2011 and 2012, but that event was less severe than the ongoing swarm, which is northeast of the island. “The area that is being affected is a little larger [than in 2011 and 2012,] the rate at which the detected earthquakes are occurring is also larger, and the focus of the events is outside the Santorini caldera,” Pyle said. Kolumbo volcano RELATED STORIES —Scientists find hidden mechanism that could explain how earthquakes ‘ignite’ —Tibet earthquake: Deadly magnitude 7.1 quake hits holy city of Shigatse —Massive magnitude 7 earthquake strikes off California coast Most of the earthquakes have occurred between another underwater volcano, Kolumbo, which is approximately 4.4 miles (7 kilometers) northeast of Santorini, and the small island of Anydros. While plate tectonics appear to be driving the earthquakes this time, Pyle noted that researchers are unsure whether there’s a direct link between the tectonic activity and any potential volcanic activity at Kolumbo. “We actually don’t really know much about the deep systems supplying magma to the volcanos,” Pyle said. Kolumbo volcano last erupted in 1650, triggering a catastrophic tsunami that devastated islands in the region. Santorini was shaped by the earlier Minoan eruption in 1600 B.C., which was one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history, according to Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in New York. 4. DeepSeek research suggests Huawei’s Ascend 910C delivers 60% of Nvidia H100 inference performance DeepSeek research suggests Huawei’s Ascend 910C delivers 60% of Nvidia H100 inference performance When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Huawei Huawei’s HiSilicon Ascend 910C is a version of the company’s Ascend 910 processor for AI training introduced in 2019. By now, the performance of the Ascend 910 is barely sufficient for the cost-efficient training of large AI models. Still, when it comes to inference, it delivers 60% of Nvidia’s H100 performance, according to researchers from DeepSeek. While the Ascend 910C is not a performance champion, it can succeed in reducing China’s reliance on Nvidia GPUs. Testing by DeepSeek revealed that the 910C processor exceeded expectations in inference performance. Additionally, with manual optimizations of ***** kernels, its efficiency could be further improved. DeepSeek’s native support for Ascend processors and its PyTorch repository allows for seamless CUDA-to-***** conversion with minimal effort, making it easier to integrate Huawei’s hardware into AI workflows. This suggests that Huawei’s AI processor’s capabilities are advancing rapidly, despite sanctions by the U.S. government and the lack of access to leading-edge process technologies of TSMC. While Huawei and SMIC have managed to catch up with TSMC’s capabilities in the 2019–2020 era and produce a chip that can be considered competitive with Nvidia’s A100 and H100 processors, the Ascend 910C is not the best option for AI training. AI training remains a domain where Nvidia maintains its undisputable lead. DeepSeek’s Yuchen Jin said that long-term training reliability is a critical weakness of ******** processors. This challenge stems from the deep integration of Nvidia’s hardware and software ecosystem, which has been developed over two decades. While inference performance can be optimized, sustained training workloads require further improvements in Huawei’s hardware and software stack. Just like the original Ascend 910, the new Ascend 910C uses chiplet packaging, and its main compute SoC has around 53 billion transistors. While the original compute chiplet of the Ascend 910 was made by TSMC using its N7+ fabrication technology (7nm-class with EUV), the compute chiplet of the Ascend 910C is made by SMIC on its 2nd Generation 7nm-class process technology known as N+2. Looking ahead, some experts predict that as AI models converge to Transformer architectures, the importance of Nvidia’s software ecosystem may decline. DeepSeek’s expertise in the optimization of hardware and software could also significantly reduce dependency on Nvidia, offering AI companies a more cost-effective alternative, particularly for inference. However, to compete at a global scale, China must overcome the challenge of training stability and further refine its AI computing infrastructure. 7. Microsoft’s Bill Gates issues this key reminder to Nvidia bulls Microsoft’s Bill Gates issues this key reminder to Nvidia bulls Listen and subscribe to Opening Bid on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you find your favorite podcasts. Staying on top in the AI chip race won’t be easy for market darling Nvidia (NVDA) and its founder Jensen Huang, reminds one fellow tech billionaire. “The fact that Jensen doesn’t even make his own chips — that everyone has Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM) available — is all the more credit to him at the design level, the way they have done things is pretty fantastic. I would say I wouldn’t want to be Jensen necessarily because wow, other people are working on the same things,” Microsoft (MSFT) co-founder Bill Gates told me on Yahoo Finance’s Opening Bid podcast (video above; listen in below). Added Gates, “But so far he has stayed way ahead and Microsoft is an incredible customer and is always wanting to get as many of his chips as they possibly can. At the same time other big tech companies are working on their own AI chips.” This embedded content is not available in your region. Competition for Nvidia is sprouting up, as Gates correctly points out. With giants like Amazon (AMZN) announcing an $8 billion partnership with Anthropic to enter the AI chip space and Google (GOOG) dropping a supercomputer with an AI chip called Willow, it’s evident Big Tech companies want in on the action. Further, Broadcom (AVGO) and Marvell (MRVL) have released advanced custom chips. At the same time, the long-term demand for Nvidia’s powerful AI chips is being questioned arguably for the first time. DeepSeek is a ******** company that has bursted onto the tech landscape seemingly out of nowhere. It surprised markets and those trading hot AI names like Nvidia and AMD (AMD) after unveiling RI, its AI model that gave a ChatGPT-esque performance at a cheaper price tag. RI costs a reported $5.6 million to build a base model, compared to the hundreds of millions of dollars incurred at US-based companies such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Watch: Why billionaire investor Ray Dalio is concerned about tech valuations Fears mounted instantly that US companies are overspending on AI infrastructure, which includes Nvidia chips. “So what this [news] basically does is two things. One, it says there’s still a lot of innovation left and many companies can aspire to train these models. But, two, it also raises the really interesting question of do you need to spend billions of dollars in order to train cutting-edge, world-class models? I think the jury is still out there for things like that, but it’s basically upended our assumptions about where AI is going,” Snowflake CEO Sridhar Ramaswamy told me on Opening Bid podcast. 9. New-look Kookaburras suffer Pro League defeat to Spain New-look Kookaburras suffer Pro League defeat to Spain A new-look Kookaburras have begun their FIH Pro League title defence with a frustrating loss 2-1 to Spain. Mark Hager was forced to accept defeat in his first game as Kookaburras coach after a dominant display by the Spanish at Sydney Olympic Park on Wednesday. It was Australia’s first international fixture since their shock Paris Games quarter-final exit and featured only nine players from the 22-man squad that played in August last year. Former Kookaburras captain Hager, succeeding long-time coach Colin Batch, had named eight debutants in his side for the Sydney Pro League stage. Spain, looking to return to winning ways after losing 4-2 to the Netherlands to open the stage, took advantage of Australia’s inexperience. Max Caldas’s men were clearly the more daring side and fell just short of finding the opener in the first term. It was Pau Petchame who broke the deadlock in the second quarter and caught out debuting duo Tom Harvie – younger brother of captain Jake – and goalkeeper Mitchell Nicholson to draw first blood. Fellow debutant Ben White had crumbled under hot pressure from the Spanish and gave away the ball in Australia’s defensive half, starting the chain to Petchame. Spain conceded a penalty corner less than two minutes later, but the Kookaburras fluffed the chance to level the scores. Hager threw around the magnets for the second half and substituted Nicholson for another debutant, Jed Snowden. Snowden kept his mettle to see off a penalty corner but Spain were relentless and Nicolas Alvarez eventually found the back of the net in the final quarter. Australia claimed there was an obstruction within the penalty circle, but the goal stood after a video referral. Ky Willott then found a consolation goal for the Kookaburras. 10. Top ski resort becomes ‘hellish’ new flash point in overtourism trend: ‘A real assault’ Top ski resort becomes ‘hellish’ new flash point in overtourism trend: ‘A real assault’ Trends travel fast on TikTok — and not always for the better. One of Italy’s most popular skiing destinations has been overrun by TikTok tourists following in the footsteps of their favorite influencers. Viral influencer posts about Roccaraso, a top ski destination in central Italy, led 10,000 day-trippers to invade the resort last week, causing chaos on the slopes, traffic jams and accusations of bad behavior, CNN reported. After viral posts of snowfall at the location, tour companies in the city of Naples began to organize cheap tour buses for residents to spend a day in the mountains. Alongside an influx of cars full of visitors, 220 tour buses made a two-hour, 78-mile trip to Roccaraso, which infuriated the 1,500 local residents and ended up blocking the narrow resort roads. Visitors paid $20 for the trip, which included a sandwich, and were allegedly ignoring proper ski etiquette and sliding down on makeshift sleds made out of things such as saucepans. Some social media videos revealed visitors lighting barbecues and leaving trash in their wake. Local media is blaming one TikTokker: Rita De Crescenzo, a popular influencer from Naples. She had posted a series of videos on TikTok and other social media platforms telling people that they should come see the snow at Roccaraso. Tour companies and organizers quickly took advantage of the posts, offering deals for the ultimate tourist experience. The first buses of skiers reached Roccaraso early on Sunday since crowd control measures were put in place. © ANSA via ZUMA Press Municipalities around Roccaraso were prompted to enforce emergency crowd control measures in the aftermath, including limiting tour bus access. In a video response, De Crescenzo said it wasn’t her fault that the tour buses were blocking the roads and angering locals. “I made such a beautiful advertisement for Roccaraso where I was on Monday and Tuesday and the crowd went crazy because I put up wonderful videos,” she said in the post. Alongside an influx of cars full of visitors, 220 tour buses made a two-hour, 78-mile trip to the skiing destination. EMANUELE VALERI/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock Roccaraso Mayor Francesco Di Donato told CNN that the tour buses were “a real assault” on the area, which made the situation “hellish,” especially for residents who have homes around the resort or guests who have season passes. “Go to Roccaraso for 15 euros without a receipt? Throw your garbage in the snow? What are we talking about?” Francesco Emilio Borrelli, a Green Party politician from Naples, said in a Facebook video. “People who have passes and follow the rules were made to wait three hours in their cars for these people who didn’t have permission or passes to be there. Not in my name as a Neapolitan,” he added. Tour companies and organizers quickly took advantage of the social media posts, offering deals for the ultimate tourist experience. EMANUELE VALERI/EPA-EFE/Shutterstock Though some visitors clapped back on social media, alleging that locals were discriminating against them because they’re not from Naples, Di Donato said that their city of origin had nothing to do with the overtourism issue. “Roccaraso welcomes and wants to welcome more and more tourists, but civil and correct skiers,” he said. “The Roccaraso system is unable to contain the assault of those who come only on Sundays. We cannot put a thousand chemical bathrooms in a ski resort.” “I am on the street, these people do not have patience, they get nervous, they don’t give a damn about the machines that come. Sooner or later you risk the accident. I say it firmly: they have to face this phenomenon as if it were a soccer match,” the mayor said. On a regular two-day winter weekend, the resort typically sees about 20,000 skiers and an additional 15,000 who sled and trek — but the added 10,000 visitors last week added a security concern for the resort. 14. Myrtle Beach area projects to bring thousands of new homes. Here are some of 2025’s biggest Myrtle Beach area projects to bring thousands of new homes. Here are some of 2025’s biggest Whether it is new hotels slated to change the Myrtle Beach oceanfront or revitalization projects of former area landmarks, developers aim to add new cornerstones to Horry County in the new year. This rush to build runs the gambit from smaller projects to new residential communities with hundreds of planned units. During the 2023-24 fiscal year, Horry County issued 17,522 permits, up by more than 4,000 compared to 2018-19. The permits issued in 2023-24 had a construction value of $1.54 billion, and many of these permits include massive projects that contributed to that estimation. Given the pace of building and development throughout the Grand Strand, these are five notable projects worth watching in 2025. Is a new hotel opening on the Myrtle Beach oceanfront? Here’s what to know A rendering of a proposed new oceanfront hotel in Myrtle Beach, SC, with a pool on the roof. According to a presentation for the property shown during the November 12, 2024 City of Myrtle Beach city council meeting, the property will have close to 230 units. In the coming years, another high-rise hotel will reside along the Myrtle Beach oceanfront. Next to the Hilton Grand Vacations Club Ocean 22 Myrtle Beach at 2200 N. Ocean Blvd., the new property along 23rd Avenue North will also be a Hilton property. Called Ocean 23, the timeshare hotel will have 227 units — including 113 one-bedroom, 79 two-bedroom and 35 three-bedroom offerings. With the property’s boulevard-facing side being a maximum height of 253 feet, the new property will also feature a park. Previous renderings for the project shows two pools at the hotel, including a 520-square-foot pool and bar on the rooftop. Developers received approval for the hotel from the Myrtle Beach City Council in January 2025. Is U.S. 501 between Carolina Forest and Conway getting new mixed-use development? Here are the details A rendering for a proposed mixed-use development between Carolina Forest and Conway, SC. According to a traffic study conducted by the consulting firm Kimley *****, the project should be built by 2027. Along U.S. 501 near Gardner Lacy Road and Carolina Forest High School, the Myrtle Beach area could see its newest mixed-use, residential and shopping area open. Developers plan to build a massive new complex slated for completion in 2027. The Sun News obtained the plans via a Freedom of Information Act request for a traffic study commissioned to analyze the plan’s impact on U.S. 501 traffic. The project includes: About 30 buildings, including seven parking garages 1,890 new apartment units 6,300 square foot medical-dental office 267,800 square foot shopping center 139,100 square foot home improvement store 3,000 square foot drive-in bank 5,000 square foot gas station and convenience store 20,200 square foot restaurant space 2,500 square foot coffee shop with drive-thru The development could bring more cars to an area prone to traffic. Conducted by the consulting firm Kimley *****, the traffic study for the project estimated that the new mixed-use development creates 26,572 new daily trips at several intersections and roads along U.S. 501. While developers plan to finish the project in 2027, work will occur while Horry County completes road improvements to U.S. 501. The project includes completing a six-lane widening of U.S. 501 from S.C. 31 to the S.C. 544 interchange as part of its Ride III road infrastructure upgrades. The county estimates the work will cost $50 million and finish in 2026. More than a thousand homes are under construction near Conway as part of a massive development. Here’s what to know Auberon Woods is a 1,100-home development near Conway, SC, expected for completion in 2027. The development follows other large projects that will bring thousands of new homes to the Conway area. At Teddy Bear Circle near Highway 90, more than a thousand homes for prospective residents moving to the Conway area are planned. Auberon Woods is a 1,100-home community planned for a 758-acre land parcel. It will include amenities like a pool and clubhouse. The D.R. Horton project intends to build 194 single-family homes in 2025 and finish the project in 2027. The project isn’t the only massive development arriving in Conway. In January 2024, the City of Conway approved the construction of more than 3,300 single-family, townhomes and multi-family dwellings along Highway 701 South in a community called Warden Station. Myrtle Beach’s now-closed speedway will be turned into a new community. Here’s the plan The Myrtle Beach Speedway closed in 2020, and developers want to turn the old racetrack into a new community of townhomes and other units. Developers split the speedway into two separate parcels. The national homebuilder Lennar owns part of the closed speedway. Horry County Land Records’ map of the property shows Lennar’s plot divided into about 175 parcels. Trilogy Investment Company owns the other part of the speedway. In a June 2024 interview, the company’s CEO Jason Joseph told The Sun News that Trilogy’s community will include 226 townhomes, with units ranging from 1,200 square feet to 1,400 square feet. The Trilogy community will be called Rêve at Champions Point, and the first townhomes will be finished in 2025. Joseph added that the community will be built-to-rent, meaning residents cannot purchase their property outright. He added that built-to-rent appeals to residents 55 and older. “People are moving there and renting by choice not because of affordability necessary of buying but because they want the flexibility of movement,” Joseph said in a June 2024 interview. “You’re creating community; you have the benefits of home life. (Built-to-rent) give you the lock and leave flexibility as well.” Why were trees cleared in Carolina Forest? Will it close an area golf course? Construction workers cleared land near the World Tour Golf Links in the Carolina Forest section of Myrtle Beach. Horry County Land Records indicate the property’s designated for development. River Oaks Drive in Carolina Forest looks different in February 2025 than it did one year ago. Dense trees previously lined the road near the World Tour Golf Links and River Oaks Golf Club. Now, the trees sit in dense stacks on dirt-covered land prepped for development. According to Horry County Land Records, developers plan to build a new community called North Cove. The project is part of a larger plan to close River Oaks Golf Club and replace it. The Sun News reported in February 2024 that developers bought the course and will add 220 lots to the property. It’s unclear when the golf course will finally close. Source link #Myrtle #Beach #area #projects #bring #thousands #homes #2025s #biggest Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

McNamara scored in the third minute before Western United skipper Chloe Logarzo, who was overlooked for the Matildas, levelled the scores with a wonderful long-range strike in the 26th. But McNamara tapped home in the 36th minute then completed her hat-trick with a wonderful chip two minutes later, before being substituted with apparent cramp in the 57th minute. She now has six goals for the season, plus an assist, while City sit five points clear of second-placed Melbourne Victory. Rhianna Pollicina, who assisted in two of McNamara’s goals, added a fourth in the 59th minute, before Lourdes Bosch completed the rout in the 71st, ensuring City’s first ever win over their crosstown rivals. But there were concerns over United midfielder Melissa Taranto, who suffered a potentially serious left knee injury in the build-up to Pollicina’s goal. City opened the scoring when McNamara played the ball to Pollicina, who found her again with a wonderful through ball. McNamara burst forward to get away one-on-one with Matildas goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln, who denied her first strike with an outstretched leg, before the striker controlled the rebound and buried her second attempt. McNamara could have made it 2-0 in the 19th minute but took a loose touch as she charged towards Lincoln, who brilliantly blocked her attempt on goal. Seven minutes later, City lost the ball under pressure and Logarzo unleashed a powerful, fizzing long-range strike. City goalkeeper Malena Mieres denied several United attacks, before Bosch went on a dazzling run down the right then cut the ball back for McNamara to tap home. Two minutes later, Pollicina brilliantly found McNamara, who spotted Lincoln off her line and deftly chipped her. Logarzo hit the crossbar in the 54th minute but five minutes later Mariana Speckmaier slipped through Pollicina to score, before Bosch added a fifth. City travel to face Newcastle on Saturday while sixth-placed United play Sydney FC away on Sunday. 19. Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant Being Upgraded With a Contract Intelligence Feature Adobe Acrobat AI Assistant Being Upgraded With a Contract Intelligence Feature Adobe Acrobat’s artificial intelligence (AI) assistant is getting a new capability that will make it easier for users to get a quick breakdown of complex contracts. Announced on Tuesday, the new feature is called Contract Intelligence, and it adds a new workflow for the AI chatbot whenever a user opens a contract via Acrobat. The company says the feature can surface key details of the contract, which can otherwise get buried in lengthy text. Notably, in November 2024, Adobe released a paper about the SlimLM AI model that can function entirely within a smartphone and process documents. Adobe Acrobat Introduces AI-Powered Contract Intelligence In a blog post, the San Jose-based tech giant detailed the new feature for Acrobat’s AI assistant. The company said it developed the new tool on the basis of the feedback from the Adobe Acrobat Contract AI survey. The survey was conducted in January in partnership with research firm Advanis and included 1020 US-based consumers, 274 small business owners, 286 knowledge workers, and 202 technology leaders. The tech giant found that as many as 70 percent of consumers in the US admitted to not reading a contract before signing it. Similar sentiments were shared by 62 percent of the small business owners, 61 percent of the surveyed knowledge workers and 63 percent of the technology leaders. Adobe stated that the new Contract Intelligence feature within the Acrobat AI assistant solves this problem by improving the process of navigating through the information in contracts. With this, whenever a user opens a contract in Acrobat, the AI chatbot will automatically identify it as such. This will also work for scanned documents. Once recognised, the AI assistant will generate a contract overview and surface key terms and clauses in a single click. The AI will also summarise and simplify the contract language for ease of understanding and readability. Additionally, the feature will also recommend questions specific to the document to help the user gain additional information. Contract Intelligence also adds clickable citations next to the generated summaries and responses. Users can click on the citations to find the source of the information to verify the AI-generated outputs. Additionally, the feature also allows users to compare and look for differences between versions of up to 10 contracts. This also supports scanned documents. This feature is now available with the Acrobat AI Assistant add-on for both paid and free users. The feature is being added to the desktop app, web client, as well as mobile apps. It only supports the English language currently. Notably, the Acrobat AI Assistant add-on is priced at Rs. 398 a month. 21. Witnesses recall horror of Sweden’s worst school shooting Witnesses recall horror of Sweden’s worst school shooting Getty Images Police say they are still investigating the motive for the attack A student at the education centre in central Sweden has recalled how she and others tried to help one of the victims of what would turn out to be the worst school shooting ever to happen in Sweden. “A guy next to me was shot in the shoulder. He was bleeding a lot. When I looked behind me, I saw three people on the floor bleeding,” Marwa, who only gave her first name, told TV4 Sweden. Eleven people died after Tuesday’s attack at Risbergska school in Orebro, including the suspected gunman. Police say the number of those injured remains unclear. What is also not yet known is the motive for the attack, but police have said “everything indicates” that it was not ideological. Marwa said she and another friend tried to help the injured person by wrapping a shawl around the man’s shoulder “so that he wouldn’t bleed so much”. “Everyone was so shocked.” Teacher Lena Warenmark recalled hearing around 10 gunshots close to her study, telling Swedish public radio that she heard a few bangs in short succession, followed by a short pause, and then a few more. Ms Warenmark said she was confined to her study for over an hour. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the attack the “worst mass shooting in Swedish history” and said it was difficult to grasp the magnitude of what happened. Police said they heard reports of a shooting at an adult education centre in Orebro, 200km (124 miles) west of the capital city Stockholm, at 12:33 local time (11:44 GMT). The facility sits on a campus home to other schools. These centres are attended primarily by people who have not finished primary or secondary school. Police earlier warned the death toll could continue to rise as several people had been injured. Ali el Mokad, a relative of a man who is believed to have been studying at the school at the time of the attack, had positioned himself outside of a local hospital waiting to hear on his relatives’ condition. “It doesn’t feel very good actually,” Mr Mokad told Reuters news agency. He said that his cousin also knew someone at the school, and when she called her friend earlier, “she fell to the ground because she was crying so much”. “She thought what she saw was so terrible. She only saw people lying on the floor, injured and blood everywhere,” Mr Mokad said, describing the scene his cousin’s friend had witnessed. Such attacks are very rare in Sweden. While there have been school shootings in Sweden before, they have not been of this magnitude. Last September, there was a school shooting south of Stockholm, when a 15-year-old is suspected to have wounded a classmate – although that attack was linked to Sweden’s problem of gang violence. 22. US military plane carrying deported Indians due to arrive in Punjab US military plane carrying deported Indians due to arrive in Punjab A US deportation flight carrying Indian nationals accused of entering the country illegally is due to arrive in the state of Punjab. The US military aircraft carrying the deportees left Texas late on Tuesday. it’s headed for the city of Amritsar where authorities say they have put measures in place to process them. President Donald Trump has made the mass deportation of undocumented foreign nationals a key policy. The US is said to have identified about 18,000 Indian nationals it believes entered illegally. Trump has said India’s prime minister Narendra Modi had assured him that the country would “do what’s right” in accepting US deportations. Authorities in Punjab say they have set up special counters to receive the deportees, adding the individuals would be treated in a “friendly” manner. Journalists have begun gathering outside police barricades near an Indian Air Force building in Amritsar. The plane with 104 deportees on board is set to land at 13:00 local time (07:30GMT). They will be processed separately from regular passengers before boarding buses to their home states, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. Trump is increasingly using US military planes to return individuals to their home countries. However, deportation flights to India are not new. In the US fiscal year 2024, which ended in September, more than 1,000 Indian nationals had been repatriated by charter and commercial flights. In October, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported more than 100 Indian nationals who lacked legal grounds to stay in the US on a chartered flight, part of a rising trend in removals to India. That flight carrying adult men and women was also routed to Punjab, close to many deportees’ places of origin. No precise breakdown of hometowns was provided. Much of the migration from India to US appears to originate from the Sikh-dominated state of Punjab and neighbouring Haryana, which has traditionally seen people migrating overseas. The other source of origin is Gujarat, Modi’s home state. “That has been part of a steady increase in removals from the US of Indian nationals over the past few years, which corresponds with a general increase in encounters that we have seen with Indian nationals in the last few years as well,” Royce Bernstein Murray, assistant secretary at the US Department of Homeland Security told a media briefing in October. Encounters refer to instances where non-citizens are stopped by US authorities while attempting to cross the country’s borders with Mexico or Canada. A total of 5,477 Indians have been deported from the US by ICE between 2018 and 2023, according to official figures. More than 2,300 were deported in 2020, the highest in recent years. The number of undocumented Indian immigrants in the US is disputed. New data from Pew Research Center estimates 725,000 people as of 2022, making them the third-largest group after Mexico and El Salvador. In contrast, the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) puts the figure at 375,000, ranking India fifth among origin countries. Unauthorised immigrants make up 3% of the US population and 22% of the foreign-born population. In November, 1.44 million non-citizens in the US remain on ICE’s “non-detained docket with final orders of removal”, according to an ICE document, accessed by Fox News. The highest numbers come from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico, each with over 200,000 individuals awaiting deportation. China has 37,908 cases, while India has 17,940 on the list. The ICE document says the US government expects foreign nations to accept their citizens but faces resistance. ICE currently classifies 15 countries as “uncooperative”, including China, India, Iran, Russia and Venezuela. Eleven others, such as Iraq, Nicaragua and Vietnam, are considered at risk of non-compliance. “Factors that could lead to a country being classified as uncooperative include hindering ICE’s removal efforts by refusing to conduct consular interviews when necessary; refusing to accept charter removal missions; having an unacceptable ratio of releases when compared to removals and/or unacceptable average time from executable final order of removal to removal; and/or denying or delaying issuance of travel documents, such as passports,” the document says. India’s foreign ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said recently that India was “firmly opposed to ******** migration, especially as it is linked to other forms of organised crime”. “As part of India-US migration and mobility cooperation, both sides are engaged in a process to deter ******** migration, while also creating more avenues for legal migration from India to the US. We are keen to continue this cooperation. “At the same time, the government of India would need to do the required verification, including nationality of the concerned individuals before they are deported to India.” Last year, under former US President Joe Biden, 271,000 migrants were deported to 192 countries. 24. Novo Nordisk: A Top 2025 Pick and A New Opportunity Novo Nordisk: A Top 2025 Pick and A New Opportunity I love consumer instinct. Thank you, Peter ******, for teaching us about using our instincts as consumers along with megatrends and technical analysis. Last night we went to a dinner party and the conversation turned to Bowling Green, Nebraska, the Ozempic capital of the U.S. On December 2, 2024, I wrote a Daily called, Novo Nordisk, A Love Story. I wrote, “According to an article in the NY Post, the diet drugs have “changed the foods we eat, the ways we celebrate, and exercise, and travel, and dress, and talk about health and beauty.” It behooves you to investigate which companies are related to the life-changing characteristics the article mentions. I have been on this theme since 2023 and now have it as one of my major investment themes for 2025.” As Novo Nordisk (NYSE:) recently had positive news on a trial about its impact on kidney disease, the stock then gapped up, and then sold off back to major support. When folks are talking about the drug at dinner parties, and the fundamentals are intact, we get interested. It is also possible, NVO is offering us another low-risk trade setup. The Daily chart shows us that even after the gap higher, the price could not hold above the January 6-month calendar range. However, the move lower has kept price above the calendar range low. I like the momentum holding up despite the selloff. And should NVO get back above 85.00, that would look solid. On the weekly chart, we can clearly see the risk to under the 200-week moving average. Plus, in the last 2 weeks, NVO has been trading inside the bar from 3 weeks ago. The monthly chart has its own narrative. This chart has the 23-month and 80-month moving averages. While the price is in the middle of both moving averages, note the relative strength on the bottom of the chart. NVO on a monthly timeframe is massively oversold. If you add the low risk illustrated on the weekly chart, along with the rising momentum and calendar ranges on the daily chart, that is compelling enough. That a hot company with good fundamentals is oversold is yet another reason to keep this one on your radar. Duterte, the daughter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, has been accused of misusing millions of dollars in public funds and threatening to have Marcos assassinated. She has denied the charges and alleged she is the victim of a political vendetta.
