The operation was conducted by over 100 agencies statewide from January 26 to February 1, 2025. The operation, conducted from January 26 to February 1, 2025, highlights the ongoing efforts to combat human trafficking and provide support to victims. 547 arrested in human trafficking operation What We Know: Authorities from the LAPD, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,, and over 100 law enforcement agencies participated in Operation Reclaim & Rebuild. The operation resulted in the arrest of 547 individuals across California for various criminal charges related to human trafficking. 333 exploiters were arrested. 11 minors were rescued and placed in protective custody. 166 adults were identified as trafficking victims and received support services. ‘Preying on young girls and boys’ Local Perspective: Los Angeles County saw significant enforcement efforts, with over 230 arrests made by the LAPD, LASD, and Long Beach Police Department. The LAPD alone reported 205 arrests, including suspects accused of trafficking minors as young as 14 years old. “Our actions saved one 14-year-old, three 15-year-olds, one 16-year-old, and two 17-year-olds from lives that were being exploited by abuse and danger,” said LAPD Chief of Police Jim McDonnell. “Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar business and should be viewed as nothing short of modern-day slavery,” District Attorney Nathan Hochman said. “Los Angeles County has the tragic distinction of being one of the nation’s capitals of human trafficking. This is completely unacceptable and must be stopped. The victims are some of the most vulnerable, defenseless individuals in our community, often just kids, and they need our protection and the prosecution of their tormentors. Please know if you are engaged in these despicable acts, we will come after you, arrest you, prosecute you, and see that you spend years behind bars.” 230 arrests in LA County What we know: Many of the arrested suspects now face serious felony charges, including human trafficking of a minor, pandering, and pimping. Several high-profile cases have already entered the court system. According to the district attorney’s office: Jamaree Beckly faces up to 13 years and four months in prison if convicted of human trafficking of a minor and pandering an adult. Derran Adkins could face 70 years to life plus 20 years due to prior felony convictions for human trafficking of a minor and an adult, with allegations of great bodily injury. Fabian Gilbert is charged with pandering and felony firearm possession while out on bail, facing up to eight years, eight months in prison. Kevin Thomas faces up to 12 years in prison for pandering, with a prior serious or violent felony conviction. Albert Walker is charged with pimping, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for February 19. William Dixon III, Dvon Davonte Langhaslip, and Osborne Brown face pandering charges, with possible sentences ranging from six to twelve years in prison. The oil and gas giant posted full-year 2024 adjusted net income of $18.3 billion, reflecting a 21% fall from $23.2 billion a year earlier. Analysts had expected TotalEnergies’ full-year 2024 adjusted net income to come in at $18.2 billion, according to an LSEG-compiled consensus. The energy major reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter adjusted net income of $4.4 billion. The results buck a trend of consecutive quarterly losses. TotalEnergies’ adjusted net income had dropped for five straight quarters to notch a three-year low in September last year. In a trading update published last month, TotalEnergies said its fourth-quarter results would likely benefit from a slight increase in hydrocarbon production, stronger gas trading and a modest increase in refining margins. Paris-listed shares of TotalEnergies are up around 6.8% year-to-date. The world’s top oil and gas companies have seen profits fall from record levels in 2022, when Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine prompted international benchmark Brent crude to jump to nearly $140 per barrel. OnePlus 13 review: the rapid Android with a gorgeous fabric back | Android OnePlus 13 review: the rapid Android with a gorgeous fabric back | Android OnePlus is trying to prove you don’t need a Samsung or a Google to have a top-tier premium Android in 2025, and mostly succeeds. The OnePlus 13 is the latest in the Oppo sub-brand’s series of keenly priced phones. Despite becoming more expensive every year, the £899 (€1,049/$899) new model still costs a little less than its £1,000-plus Google and Samsung rivals. The OnePlus comes in a choice of colours, including a particularly attractive blue microfibre back version as pictured, which feels great and stands out in the sea of glass and metal slabs modern phones have become. The expansive screen has thin bezels and curved edges. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian The 6.8-in screen is bright, sharp, smooth and colourful, putting it on par with some of the best. The bevelled metal sides are almost retro, reminiscent of the OnePlus X from 2015, but make the 13 fairly easy to handle. Though it is still a big phone requiring two hands to wield most of the time. The handset is well-built with IP68 water resistance against immersion, similar to most competitors, and an unusual IP69 rating against 80C water jets, should it end up in the dishwasher by accident. Rapid in use with the fastest new chip The OnePlus is one of the first handsets to use Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, which will no doubt find its way into most high-end Androids in 2025. In tests, the chip is about 40% faster than its predecessor and makes short work of games and other intensive tasks. But the OnePlus feels even faster in day-to-day use than the numbers suggest as the software has been tuned for speed, rapidly responding to app launches, taps, swipes and other interactions. Even the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in the screen is super fast at unlocking the phone. It still has OnePlus’s signature alert slider for quickly switching between ring, vibrate and silent modes. The phone lasts a consistent 50 hours on a full charge when used on a mix of 5G and wifi with the screen actively used for about six hours. That means charging it every other day, or nightly on very heavy usage days, which is roughly on par with top competitors. A full charge using a standard 45W USB-C charger (not included) hits 50% in under half an hour and completes in 68 minutes, or as little as 37 minutes if you buy a special 100W SuperVooc charger. The phone has up to 50W wireless charging too. The phone does not contain recycled materials but is generally repairable, with screen replacements costing £280. The company does not publish product environmental impact reports, but is included in parent-company Oppo’s yearly sustainability reports. Composite: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian The 13 runs Oxygen OS 15, which is the firm’s customised version of Android 15. It behaves like most western versions of Android and is truly rapid in operation. It has a few rough edges, such as text descriptions of features displayed only in ********, but also a good amount of customisation options for those that like to tinker. A few new AI tools have been added that were lacking from previous versions as it tries to play catch up with rivals. It has a few of Google’s AI features including its Gemini voice assistant, Circle to Search, and writing tools in Gmail and Messages. The OnePlus photos app now has a few AI editing tools, too, one of which is able to erase reflections from pictures shot through windows with impressive results. OnePlus has some AI summary, writing and proofing tools of its own, but they are confined to its Notes app and an odd pop-out dock at the side of the screen. They are hit and miss and feel tacked on rather than being part of the system like better rivals. OnePlus will provide only four years of Android updates with six years of security patches, ending on 7 January 2031. That falls far short of the seven-plus years of full software and security support provided by Apple, Google and Samsung. Camera The camera app has most of the tools you need to take a good photo and plenty of modes with which to experiment. Photograph: Samuel Gibbs/The Guardian The 13 has three 50-megapixel cameras on the back, including a 0.6x ultrawide, 1x wide and 3x telephoto that can reach 6x magnification before requiring digital zoom, plus a 32MP selfie camera on the front. The triple rear camera is a marked improvement over the phone’s predecessor, shooting detailed and well-balanced images across a range of lighting conditions. Images from the ultrawide can look a little soft, but the telephoto camera is one of the best at 3x zoom. The phone also does a good job of capturing motion and handles low-light conditions very well. OnePlus has a tendency to overbrighten and over-sharpen images more than rivals, but otherwise the 13 is the closest yet to the best in the business. Most people will be very happy with the results. The camera app also has a solid set of features including a “master” mode for manual control, fun macrophotography, slow-mo, tilt-shift and time-lapse modes, and a setting to shoot photos at the full 50MP resolution of the sensors. Price The OnePlus 13 costs from £899 (€1,049/$899). For comparison, the Google Pixel 9 Pro costs from £999, the Samsung Galaxy S25+ costs £999 and the iPhone 16 Pro costs £999. Verdict The OnePlus 13 is the most expensive non-folding smartphone the company has made, but the money has mostly been spent wisely to create a top-tier phone that rivals the best in the business on many, if not all fronts. It sets a new speed benchmark as one of the first phones of 2025 with the new top Snapdragon 8 Elite chip from Qualcomm, which is expected to be used in most high-end Androids this year. The camera is improved on predecessors and the closest OnePlus has come to the best in the business from Google, Samsung and Apple. The screen is great, the two-day battery life is good and the phone looks particularly special in the blue microfibre version. The Oxygen OS Android software is rapid, making the phone feel very fast indeed, but has a few rough edges. It has a couple of good AI tools from Google, but many of OnePlus’s own AI features are poorly integrated and not quite up to scratch. OnePlus also lags Google and Samsung on software updates, which is a shame. At just shy of £900 the OnePlus is certainly not a budget option. But it undercuts big-screen rivals by about 10% and is well worth considering alongside the top Androids this year. Pros: Slick, attractive design, good screen, long battery life, rapid performance and top Android chip, good camera, water resistance, Google Gemini and other AI tools. Cons: Oxygen OS has rough edges and poor AI integration, fewer AI tools than rivals, software support short of best, more expensive than predecessor. A 40-minute train ride from the sights, Massy is one of the banlieues that ring the French capital. A satellite limbo town, it is part of Paris’ sprawl, but left out of the sell made around the world. What is for certain in these suburbs, though, is football’s dominance. As you walk up from the station, through Massy’s gauntlet of squat apartment blocks, you pass youngsters wearing kits from around the world – Arsenal, Juventus and Real Madrid. The letters P, S and G are spray-painted on to spare surfaces. It is not surprising. Paris is perhaps the most productive city in the world in forming football talent. But Paris is not entirely pre-occupied by football. One rugby club in particular still holds out. Massy, formed in 1971, are in the third tier, attracting crowds of around 2,500 to a compact stadium. Their impact, though, is oversized. In the clubhouse, small, framed photos line the walls. The subject of each wears a blue France shirt. Bastareaud stares down from one. Cameron Woki – a star of the 2022 Grand Slam team – is two spots along. Sekou Macalou, part of the squad at the 2023 Rugby World Cup, is there. Yacouba Camara, who played at Japan 2019, is too. Jordan Joseph, named as the best young player in the world in 2018 and now a fully-fledged international, is another. It is an extraordinary wellspring of talent. Not least for its location. In the 1970s, the French national team was made up almost entirely of players south of the Loire River, drawing on the sport’s small-town heartlands. By the 1990s, that watershed was less distinct. Jimmy Marlu, a product of Massy, was one of the first Parisians to break into the France team. Serge Betsen, also born and brought up in the capital, was of the same era., external Since the turn of the century, though, the trickle has grown to a torrent, with around 50 Parisian players, the vast majority with family backgrounds outside mainland France, having represented France’s men’s team. France have not picked a team without a player trained at Massy for the past five years. More than 200 players have come from the club to represent their country at age-grade, sevens and senior level, both men’s and women’s. Leo Barre is one of the latest. Steven Grygelko, who performed under the name Heklina, was found dead at a flat in Soho, central London by his friend Joshua Grannell. Mr Grannell said he was “furious” it had taken almost two years for police to make a public appeal to find three men, who detectives say were at the flat hours before Mr Grygelko was discovered. In March 2023, a review by Baroness Casey into the force found institutional homophobia, racism and misogyny. Peaches Christ Productions Steven Grygelko, who performed under the name Heklina, Joshua Grannell, aka Peaches Christ Mr Grygelko, 55, and Mr Grannell had been staying in London preparing to put on a performance of their drag parody show Mommie Queerest at Soho Theatre. Detectives released CCTV footage last month of three men who may have “vital information” about what happened. Mr Grannell criticised the police for failing to keep him and Mr Grygelko’s next of kin informed over the investigation. “When I left London they had assigned me with a family liaison officer. “They convinced me that we would be updated weekly, that we would be included in the process, that we would be informed of anything. “I got on that plane, and every email went unanswered for months and months. “They just completely ignored us.” Mr Grannell said they had still had not been officially told the cause of Mr Grygelko’s death, which is being treated as unexpected, and accused the Met of dismissing him and his friend as “trash”. “I hate being the person who incorrectly would cry homophobia, if it’s not homophobia. But they have left me no choice.” Peaches Christ Productions The pair had been sharing a flat in Soho when Mr Grygelko died Mr Grannell found his friend’s body when he returned to their flat one morning and told officers he was “certain” that someone else had been there before he arrived. “The door was not only not locked, but it wasn’t shut all the way. “I went to put my key in, and the door just opened.” A Met spokesperson said “a number of enquiries” had been pursued before issuing the CCTV appeal. Det Ch Supt Christina Jessah said the force appreciated Mr Grygelko’s next of kin “had been frustrated by the pace of the investigation” and lack of updates. She added: “We apologise and will be taking steps to correct this.” She said officers were also continuing to speak to London’s LGBT+ community to address wider safety concerns. Met Police Police released CCTV of three men believed to have been at the Soho flat of Mr Grygelko The Met has been trying to improve confidence in policing following a number of scandals, including failures in the investigation into the serial killer Stephen Port. A number of reforms have since been made, including introducing new community liaison officers, but according to research published by the mayor’s office for policing and crime, only 55% of LGBT+ respondents said that they trusted the Met, compared to 73% of those who did not identify as LGBT+. Mr Grannell, who performs as Peaches Christ, described his friend as a “trailblazer” who had opened the doors for many other drag artists. “Heklina was maybe one of the funniest people I’ve ever met. She was dark and hilarious and what she didn’t want the world to know was that she was secretly kind. “Quietly behind the scenes, she was constantly helping people out. Shares extended its record run on Wednesday after BlinkLab announced it had signed up Ohio-based medical centre PriMED as part of its autism registrational trial, which is seeking to recruit a total of 1000 participants. BlinkLab hopes to commercialise a smartphone app to help diagnose autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in young children. The company is chaired by Brian Leedman, who co-founded ResApp Health, which used a similar technology as a diagnostic tool for respiratory problems. It was bought by US giant Pfizer for nearly $200 million in September 2022. Mr Leedman is confident of BlinkLab’s ability to recreate ResApp’s success. “I think that this type of technology is highly appealing to the large technology companies, such as the big pharmas, Apple Health, Google Health,” he said. When asked he if was open to BlinkLab being acquired, Mr Leedman said: “For the right price, absolutely”. Over the past six months, BlinkLab shares have surged 77 per cent to 42.5¢.
