Vodafone owner TPG bans workers from ******** AI chatbot DeepSeek
Vodafone and iiNet owner TPG has banned workers from using ******** artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek, believed to be the first *********** company to do so.
It comes after the chatbot platform was banned from all *********** Government devices after it was found to pose an unacceptable level of security risk, with many businesses expected to follow suit.
The direction from the Home Affairs Department early last month was made under the same framework used to prohibit TikTok from Government-issued devices in 2023.
On Wednesday, TPG tech security general manager Lee Barney said not only did it ban DeepSeek at work but also urged employees to not use it in their personal lives.
“We have banned DeepSeek across TPG and are recommending our people to not use it in a personal capacity,” he said in a statement provided to The Nightly.
“The speed of AI developments and how information is ingested and used needs to be met with a measured and cautious approach from both the public and corporate Australia.”
The launch of DeepSeek, developed by a Hangzhou-based startup, rocked US tech stocks last week after it claimed its models functioned on par with its US competitors like OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT.
NASDAQ-listed chipmaker Nvidia’s share price dropped by roughly 17 per cent last Monday, wiping almost $1 trillion off its market value.

Detroit arson suspect may be in Tennessee, investigators say
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Fire investigators in Detroit are asking for help to locate a man suspected of causing an explosion that damaged several cars in August.
On August 15, a suspect was seen on video throw an object into the front passenger seat of a 2018 Chevy Traverse parked at a Post Office in the 17300 block of Harper Avenue in Detroit. The suspect poured an accelerant inside the vehicle and set it on fire, causing an explosion.
Proposed law would lower handgun carry age to 18 in Tennessee
Six vehicles were damaged from the blast, including four that were burned by the explosion. The suspect was knocked off of his feet and suffered burns to his face.
Detroit fire investigators believe the suspect left Detroit and may be headed to either Tennessee or Texas. He is described a heavy-set male. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and blue jeans with a dark hoodie.

Anyone who may have information regarding the suspect or the crime is asked to call the Detroit Police Department’s Arson Unit at 313-596-2940, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-Speak Up, or DetroitRewards.tv.

USPS temporarily suspends accepting packages from China and Hong Kong
USPS temporarily suspends accepting packages from China and Hong Kong
The United States Postal Service announced Tuesday night that it is temporarily suspending accepting packages sent from China and Hong Kong until further notice.
The suspension is effective immediately, the USPS said. Letters and flats are not included in the suspension, it said.
The postal service did not provide a reason for the suspension or say how long it expects it to last.
Earlier Tuesday, Beijing announced it would counter President Trump’s new 10% tariff on ******** goods with retaliatory tariffs of its own. China said starting next Monday it would implement a 15% tariff on coal and liquefied natural gas products along with a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery and large-engine cars imported from the U.S.
Mr. Trump’s tariff increase also eliminated a duty-free exemption for low-value packages coming from China. The “de minimis” exemption allows goods valued at $800 or below to come into the United States without paying duties or certain taxes.
But it has faced scrutiny due to a surge in shipments claiming the exemption in recent years.
U.S. officials pointed to the growth of ********-founded online retailers Shein and Temu as a key factor behind this increase — and Tuesday’s halt could delay parcels from both companies from entering the country.
U.S. officials have also said the growth in shipments makes it harder to screen goods for security risks.
Mr. Trump says he plans to speak with ******** President Xi Jinping in the coming days.

Where is Nikvard in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? – Magnum Opus Quest
Where is Nikvard in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2? – Magnum Opus Quest
In Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, you’ll pick up a quest relatively early on called ‘Magnum Opus’, but it’s a lengthy one that’ll sit in your quest log for quite some time. It could be many hours until you finish it, and there are quite a few steps along the way to resolving it.
Fortunately, I’ve put together a Magnum Opus quest guide, designed to help you conquer the most troublesome objective – finding Nikvard in Kingdom Come Deliverance. He’s a slippery character, but in this guide, you’ll learn Nikvard’s location in just a few steps.
Finding Nikvard in Kingdom Come
Magnum Opus will be handed to you by the Lower Semine Miller if you follow his quest line.
It requires Henry of Skalitz to find his way into Trosky Castle and liberate a book that’s hidden somewhere within, but details are sparse. As the quest pieces itself together, Henry concocts a plan to get himself inside, but things quickly turn awry.
Once you’ve made your way into Trosky Castle (against your will), you’ll find yourself facing the objective with almost nothing to guide you on your quest. Talking to the Scribe and some of the castle’s occupants doesn’t reveal much, and ultimately, you learn that Nikvard has the book, but nobody knows where he is.
Where to Find Nikvard for Magnum Opus
Nikvard has the book – that much is obvious.
If you want to go through the various speech checks and minor actions to advance the quest and level up some skills, feel free to follow the quest as it was designed. If you’d rather skip that and head straight to Nikvard’s location to force the completion of the quest, then you’ll need to go here:
Look for the red flag!
The red and yellow flag marker is where you’ll find Nikvard in KCD2.
The location of the Magnum Opus in Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 is actually outside the castle grounds. It seems that Nikvard had a spot of bother with his digestive health and the book ended up falling down a latrine, passing through the sewer pipe and landing on the floor outside the castle.
It’s sitting immediately alongside Nikvard’s dead body, which is a shame. He seemed like he would have been a nice guy.
Don’t worry, the guard standing nearby commenting on the dead body won’t mind you taking the book – but the Miller will comment on how badly it smells when you take it back to him.

Adrian High School band director charged with criminal ******* conduct
ADRIAN — Adrian High School‘s band director has been charged with four counts of criminal ******* conduct and has been placed on leave.
Aaron Michael Mykeloff, 50, of Raisin Township was arraigned Tuesday on four counts of first-degree criminal ******* conduct, according to online Lenawee County District Court records. The records show the offenses took place in 2022 in Raisin Township. Bond was set at $400,000.
Mykeloff is alleged to have had a ******* relationship with a minor, a news release from the Raisin Township Police Department said.
A probable cause conference is scheduled for Feb. 11, and a preliminary examination is set for Feb. 18, both before District Judge Laura J. Schaedler.
Mykeloff has been placed on leave, a news release from Adrian Public Schools said.
“Naturally, Adrian Public Schools is actively cooperating with law enforcement,” the release said. “The District is also conducting its investigation into these off-duty, off-site allegations.”

The charges are not related to his employment, the district and police said.
“We understand that the recent information regarding Mr. Mykeloff is difficult to process and will leave students confused, upset and uncertain,” a note sent Monday to band parents and students said. “Tomorrow, High School Principal Mr. Skeels will be in both first and second hour band class, as well as 3rd hour guitar class, to support students and help process this information. He will also discuss the plan to ensure that planned band activities can move forward.”

Mykeloff is represented by attorney Elias Muawad of Bloomfield Hills. Muawad said Tuesday that he had no comment because he has not yet received discovery in the case, such as police reports.
The maximum penalty for the charges is life or any number of years in prison.
Anyone with information to add about this case may contact Sgt. James Briggs or Chief Kevin Grayer at the Raisin Township Police Department by calling 517-424-4615.

Nissan may call off merger talks with Honda, source says
Nissan may call off merger talks with Honda, source says
By Maki Shiraki and Daniel Leussink
TOKYO (Reuters) -Japan’s Nissan may call off its merger talks with Honda, according to a person familiar with the matter, adding that Nissan’s board members were due to meet in the near future to decide a course of action.
The development puts in doubt a tie-up that would create the world’s third-largest automaker by sales and raises fresh questions about how hard-hit Nissan could ride out its latest crisis without external help.
Reports of the merger talks ending sent shares of both carmakers higher on Wednesday, with Honda up more than 2% and Nissan up 1.6% against a slight decline in Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 index.
Honda, Japan’s second-largest car maker, and Nissan, its third-largest, last year said they were in discussions to merge their businesses, in what would mark a pivotal change for an industry that faces a vast threat from China’s BYD and other new electric vehicle entrants.
But those talks have been complicated by growing differences on both sides, according to two people familiar with the matter, both of whom declined to be identified because they were not authorised to speak to the media.
Nissan’s board is due to soon meet to discuss calling off the merger talks after Honda sounded it out about becoming a subsidiary, one of the people said, adding that such an arrangement was a departure from the original spirit of their discussions.
Honda, with a market value nearly five times ******* than Nissan, is increasingly worried about its smaller rival’s progress in its turnaround plan, said the other person.
Japan’s Asahi Shimbun newspaper earlier reported that the merger could be called off.
Spokespeople for both companies on Wednesday did not comment on whether merger talks were off, but said they would make an announcement in mid-February, as previously flagged.
Nissan has been hit harder than some other carmakers by the shift to EVs, having never fully recovered after years of crisis sparked by the arrest and ouster of former Chairman Carlos Ghosn in 2018.
The tie-up talks have coincided with the disruption posed by potential tariffs from U.S. President Donald Trump. Tariffs against Mexico would be more painful for Nissan than for Honda or Toyota, according to analysts.
Nissan’s long-term alliance partner Renault had said it would be open in principle to the merger with Honda. The French automaker owns 36% of Nissan, including 18.7% through a French trust.

Alphabet will invest about $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025
Alphabet will invest about $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet Inc., speaks at the inaugural 2024 Business, Government and Society Forum at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in Stanford, California, on April 3, 2024.
Carlos Barria | Reuters
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is planning another big year of spending as it continues to build out its artificial intelligence offering.
“We are confident about the opportunities ahead, and to accelerate our progress, we expect to invest approximately $75 billion in capital expenditures in 2025,” Pichai said in Tuesday’s earnings release announcing the investment plan.
The capex figure came in ahead of the $59.73 billion consensus estimate for Google, according to Visible Alpha.
On its earnings call, Alphabet said it expects $16 billion to $18 billion of those expenses to come in the first quarter. Overall, the expenditures will go toward “technical infrastructure, primarily for servers, followed by data centers and networking,” finance chief Anat Ashkenazi said.
Alphabet’s announcement came alongside a mixed fourth-quarter earnings report. Shares fell 8% after the company topped Wall Street’s earnings estimates by 2 cents per share, but fell short on revenue expectations.
Alphabet and its megacap tech rivals are rushing to build out their data centers with next-generation AI infrastructure, packed with Nvidia’s graphics processing units, or GPUs. Last month, Meta said it plans to invest $60 billion to $65 billion this year as part of its AI push. Microsoft has committed to $80 billion in AI-related capital expenditures in its current fiscal year.
The recent rise of China’s DeepSeek open-source models has led to some concerns about whether companies need to invest as heavily in their buildouts. Those fears rocked financial markets early last week, spurring a sell-off that contributed to the worst one-day market value loss for a company in history.
Many technology CEOs have called attention to the ******** startup and its implications for U.S.-based tools. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said DeepSeek is showing “real innovations,” while Palantir CEO Alex Karp told CNBC last week that competing AI models means the U.S. needs an “all-country effort” to develop the technology faster.
In addition to infrastructure purchases, Alphabet said it expects headcount growth in 2025 “in key investment areas such as AI and cloud.”

Victoria releases alert for infectious ‘Q fever’ disease
Victoria releases alert for infectious ‘Q fever’ disease
A dangerous and infectious disease that can cause long-term health complications is spreading across Victoria, prompting the state’s health department to issue a fresh warning to residents.
There were 77 cases of the Q fever disease in 2024, the department said, a “significant increase” on the previous five years.
Q fever is a disease caused by infection with Coxiella burnetii bacteria, the department’s alert states.
It is mainly spread to humans from cattle, sheep and goats but can also spread from other domestic and wild animals such as kangaroos, camels, rodents, cats, dogs, birds and wallabies.
While some people with Q fever will not show any symptoms or come down with only a mild illness, the department warns that some may come down with a severe “flu-like illness” with fever, sweats, chills, headaches, joint pain, fatigue and weight loss.
Camera IconPeople who work with animals or in slaughterhouses are at greater risk catching Q fever. Wikipedia Credit: Supplied
It can also cause long-term complications such as heart disease, bone and joint infections and vascular infections.
Some 10 to 15 per cent of people with severe infections develop long-term chronic fatigue, the department said, known as Q fever fatigue syndrome.
People who work with animals are most at risk of catching the disease, with the infection commonly transmitted through the inhalation of dust or aerosols contaminated with bacteria from birth fluids, *******, ****** or blood of infected animals.
Health officials are urging agriculture, livestock and dairy farm workers to get vaccinated against the disease.
“People working in high-risk occupational groups are strongly recommended to be vaccinated against Q fever which provides a high level of protection,” the alert states.
“However, people who have previously had Q fever or have already received the Q fever vaccine should not be vaccinated due to the risk of adverse reactions.
“It is necessary to be screened for previous exposure prior to vaccination.”
Q fever can also be treated with antibiotics.
The alert states high-risk groups can also take steps to reduce their risk of exposure, such as washing hands and arms thoroughly in soapy water after any contact with animals.

(Reuters) – The U.S. Postal Service will temporarily suspend accepting inbound parcels from China and Hong Kong Posts until further notice, the USPS website showed.
The change, effective from Feb. 4, will not impact the flow of letters and ‘flats’ from China and Hong Kong, according to the website.
USPS did not immediately comment on whether this was tied to U.S. President Donald Trump’s change to ending ‘de minimis’ shipments from China and other countries.

Stretched hospitals get $1 billion in ‘landmark’ deal
Stretched hospitals get $1 billion in ‘landmark’ deal
Public hospitals and health services will receive $1.7 billion in extra funding to help save more lives.
Anthony Albanese revealed this money would increase the federal government’s contribution to public hospitals by 12 per cent, raising its total funding across the states and territories to $33.91 billion in 2026.
This commitment will help reduce emergency room waiting times, manage ambulance ramping and cut waiting lists.
“This matters to people, and this decision today will help save lives and lead to better outcomes for our nation’s hospitals,” the prime minister told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.
Australia’s hospitals have been placed under increasing pressure as the population ages, people become more sick and the consequences from the COVID-19 pandemic continue to ripple through the system.
Without government intervention, the Commonwealth’s share of public hospital funding would only continue to drop.
“The existing arrangements … simply aren’t fit for purpose,” Health Minister Mark Butler said.
“We have a terrific public hospital system in Australia, staffed by some of the best trained doctors, nurses and health professionals anywhere on the planet, but it is a hospital system under very, very serious pressure.
“This is a landmark deal between the states, the territories and the Commonwealth.”
With Australians set to head to the ballot box some time before May, the government has used this announcement to remind voters of Labor’s record on health.
“Our priority is strengthening Medicare, not ensuring that every taxpayer pays for someone to get a free lunch or karaoke night or weekend away at the cost of low and middle income earners,” Mr Albanese said in reference to the opposition’s tax-free lunch policy.
“Labor created Medicare and will protect it.”
The federal government has also tripled the bulk-billing incentive and delivered urgent care clinics across Australia.

Anthony Albanese declares perpetrators of anti-Semitic crimes should be ‘hunted down and put in the clink’
Anthony Albanese declares perpetrators of anti-Semitic crimes should be ‘hunted down and put in the clink’
Perpetrators of anti-Semitic crimes should be “hunted down (and) put in the clink”, Anthony Albanese has declared after the arrest of two men in Perth on charges related to hateful graffiti over the weekend.
The Prime Minister said these arrests, and others around the country, showed police were getting on with the job of cracking down on anti-Semitism.
“That’s a good thing,” he said.
“On the issue of anti-Semitism, we have a very clear position: I want to see people who are perpetrators of this, what are crimes, hunted down, put in the clink and dealt with.
“That’s what I want. And we’ll provide all of the authorities the resources to do so.”
Parliament is dealing with stronger federal hate crimes laws on Wednesday, with independent MP Allegra Spender seeking to broaden the remit to better tackle anti-Semitism.
Her electorate of Wentworth in Sydney has also been the target of multiple arson and graffiti attacks.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has repeatedly linked the issue of anti-Semitism to his record on cancelling visas as Home Affairs and immigration minister, including in a speech to colleagues meeting in Canberra on Tuesday.
However, it’s believed the two men arrested in Perth are *********** citizens – meaning they do not have visas to cancel.
Mr Albanese said as far as he was aware, all those charged with anti-Semitic crimes in recent months have similarly been Australians.
“I’m not aware of any non-citizens but in terms of the arrests, there have been a range of arrests made – including under Operation Avalite and by state and territory jurisdictions – and what that indicates is that the police are getting on with the job that they have,” he said.

Treasury says Elon Musk’s DOGE has “read only” access to payment systems
Treasury says Elon Musk’s DOGE has “read only” access to payment systems
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team has been given “read only” access to the Treasury Department’s federal payment system, and federal expenditures have not been affected, the Treasury said in a letter to Congress late Tuesday.
The letter, from Jonathan Blum, a Treasury official, said that a review of the Treasury’s Fiscal Service payment system has not caused “payments for obligations such as Social Security and Medicare to be delayed or re-routed.”
“Treasury has no higher obligation than managing the government’s finances on behalf of the American people, and its payments system is critical to that process,” the letter read.
Tom Krause — a technology executive who is a member of Musk’s DOGE team and is working on a review of the payment system — has also been granted a top secret security clearance, according to the letter.
“Mr. Krause is a longtime technology executive. His decades of experience in building companies and managing balance sheets as a chief financial officer are of great benefit to this review,” the letter reads. “In order to allow him to perform this function, he has been hired as an expert/consultant by the federal government and designated in a role commonly used across Administrations—a “special government employee” —pursuant to applicable law.”
Democratic lawmakers have expressed concern that access to the system could allow DOGE, which disburses nearly 90% of all federal payments, to restrict disbursement of federal funds.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, said that Blum’s letter raised more questions than answers.
“It asserts that a set of Treasury staff members have ‘read-only’ access but fails to answer questions about non-Treasury employees, like those working for Elon Musk and DOGE,” Warren said in a statement, released shortly after after Treasury’s
The Treasury’s letter came in response to a call from Senate Banking Committee Democrats, which includes Warren and Sen. Ron Wyden, for the Government Accountability Office “to investigate Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent’s decision to grant access to sensitive government payment systems to Elon Musk and other “Department of Government Efficiency” employees.”
DOGE is not a government department, but a task force established by Mr. Trump to find ways to cut federal spending.
