  3. ‘We’re truly in a shortage’ ‘We’re truly in a shortage’ As farmers struggle with a bird flu outbreak, the price of eggs is climbing. According to reports from The Guardian, U.S. egg prices have already skyrocketed and are expected to rise due to severe shortages. What’s happening? An outbreak of bird flu has affected about 14.7 million egg-laying hens, per The Guardian, causing the price of eggs to climb as much as 40 cents a week. While bird flu has been in the U.S. since 2022, this outbreak is the largest and is impacting millions of hens. According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of affected hens since January has surpassed the number of affected hens in all of 2023. “Based on the amount of birds that we have lost in the last few months, and the hen population, there just isn’t enough production to support the amount of demand that we have,” Karyn Rispoli, managing director of eggs at the price-tracking firm Expana, told The Guardian. “We’re at a point now where we’re truly in a shortage.” The egg shortage has impacted prices, not only influencing the direct cost of a carton of eggs at a grocery store but also causing the prices of items that utilize eggs to go up. Because the price of eggs has increased, bakeries, for example, are also increasing their prices to reflect the shortage. The average price of eggs in stores was just above $4 in mid-January, reported The Guardian, an increase from about $2.50 a year ago. However, consumers have encountered prices significantly higher than this average, posting shocking videos across social media. One internet user shared a TikTok video after seeing a $15 carton of eggs. Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality? Why is the rise in egg prices important? The rise in egg prices highlights the widespread impact of the current climate crisis. As food prices continue to climb, they provide a stark reminder of how extreme weather and the increase in diseases have impacted the agriculture industry. The use of dirty energy and the subsequent overheating of our planet play a direct role in the rising costs of grocery store products. What’s being done about bird flu in hens? While ending the current outbreak of bird flu is challenging, egg producers have been advocating for the federal government to fund vaccine research and biosecurity to prevent future outbreaks. Since scientists are still trying to determine whether the disease is airborne, more research is needed to better protect flocks of chickens. Outside of political advocacy, small lifestyle changes can help combat the climate crisis and, in turn, help protect our food supply. By ditching single-use plastics, taking public transportation when possible, and shopping secondhand, you can reduce your environmental footprint and help protect the planet from extreme weather events that impact our food supply. 6. What I Wish I’d Done Differently What I Wish I’d Done Differently Alexandru Miroiu / Shutterstock.com If you’re responsible for paying bills, you’ve probably heard of autopay. Autopay allows you to set up automatic bank withdrawals or credit card payments to cover your bills. The payment method appeals to consumers for two reasons: it simplifies bill payments and can save you money. When you put a bill on autopay, you don’t have to remember to submit a manual payment, eliminating the likelihood of a missed due date and associated credit score ding. Plus, some companies offer a slight interest rate reduction or bill discount when you set up automatic payments. Discover Next: 13 Banks With Immediate Sign-Up Bonuses and No Direct Deposit Required Explore Next: 12 SUVs With the Most Reliable Engines However, autopay isn’t perfect and can cause major money management problems. Keep reading to see the stories of two consumers who experienced autopay issues, what they learned from them and what advice they have for others. That way, you can avoid the same fate. Also here are 11 bills you should never put on autopay. Dr. Darla Bishop, author of “How to Afford Everything” and founder of Finansis, said she used autopay for most of her recurring bills because it kept her organized when her life got hectic. “I didn’t want to risk forgetting a payment and hurting my credit score,” she said. “Autopay gave me peace of mind and helped me stay consistent, even during tough times, like when I lost a family member and was too distracted to keep up with payments manually.” Recently, her bank’s autopay system didn’t recognize a manual payment she made earlier in the month and still processed the regularly scheduled automatic payment. As a result, her cash flow was temporarily impacted, leading to unnecessary frustration. If she could go back in time, she would have paused autopay the month she submitted a manual payment. Trending Now: 3 Signs You’ve ‘Made It’ Financially, According to Financial Influencer Genesis Hinckley While Bishop plans to continue using autopay due to its convenience, she has adjusted her strategy. “I now set autopay for the minimum due on credit cards to avoid late fees but make manual payments for any additional amounts. That way, I avoid overpayments while still getting the benefits of autopay,” Bishop said. Her major takeaway from the experience was to pay attention to how payments get applied. “It’s important to know whether extra payments go toward the principal balance or are applied to future payments. In many cases, you need to specifically direct how those payments should be allocated,” she added. Story Continues Miranda Marquit, MBA, is a financial wellness advocate who also uses autopay often. “Autopay can be a great way to stay on top of bills, especially if you travel a lot. So, I have it for my utility bills, insurance, student loans and other recurring bills,” she said. Over the years, she’s had two autopay-related issues. The first happened when she and her then-husband both made purchases from the same checking account on the day a large credit card automatic payment was also scheduled to come from that account. The bank processed all of the transactions at once, resulting in a negative account balance. Marquit ended up with a cash flow problem and two overdraft fees totaling $70. The next issue happened when her apartment lease got renewed. The property management company didn’t factor in her discounted rent for renewing for two years, so her automatic payments were higher than they should have been. She didn’t notice the overcharge for two months and when she brought it up, the property management company fought her on refunding the overage and adjusting the autopay amount. Like Bishop, Marquit will continue to use autopay because it makes her life easier overall. However, she’s monitoring it much more closely. “I have a money date with myself twice a month just to review transactions and bills and make sure the autopays [sic] are accurate,” Marquit said. “I wish that I had originally taken the time to look at my monthly cash flow and understand how money moves through my personal economy before setting [automatic payments] up,” said Marquit, in reference to a few negative experiences. Luckily, you can often pick the date an automatic payment gets processed to accommodate your cash flow. However, Marquit didn’t do that previously and let all her automatic payments cluster together. “There have been a couple of times where all the autopays came out at once, just before income reached my account and I either ended up with returned payments (and their fees) or overdrafts (and their fees),” she said. In addition to the wisdom from her story, Bishop offered the following two autopay best practices: Test autopay with one or two bills to see how it works before setting it up for all of your monthly obligations. Sign up for alerts from your bank to stay on top of upcoming payments and account balances. “Autopay has been a lifesaver for me, but it’s not perfect. Staying proactive — by double-checking your payments and understanding your bank’s system — can help you avoid hiccups like overpayments. It’s a tool, not a replacement for regular account management,” Bishop added. 8. Keir Starmer announces £1.6bn missile deal for Ukraine Keir Starmer announces £1.6bn missile deal for Ukraine Sir Keir Starmer has announced a £1.6bn missile deal for Ukraine, following a summit of European leaders in London. The prime minister also announced “a number” of allies had signed up to a “coalition of the willing”, alongside France’s President Emmanuel Macron, prepared to commit troops to the Ukrainian frontline in the event of a peace deal. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky attended the meeting, where 17 European leaders and ********* premier Justin Trudeau discussed next steps in securing peace for Ukraine. The Lancaster House summit in London comes after a televised press conference from the White House, where President Trump told Zelensky he was not grateful enough for US support. “My support for Ukraine is unwavering,” said Sir Keir, adding he felt a personal responsibility to end Russia’s ******** war and guarantee Ukraine “a lasting peace based on sovereignty and security”. “I am also clear that national security is economic security,” he said. “As well as levelling up Ukraine’s air defence, this loan will make working people here in the *** better off, boosting our economy and supporting jobs in Northern Ireland and beyond. “By doubling down on our support, working closely with key partners, and ensuring Ukraine has a strong voice at the table, I believe we can achieve a strong, lasting deal that delivers a permanent peace in Ukraine.” Sir Keir will now discuss his four-step plan with Trump, aiming to persuade the US leader to provide a security guarantee for Ukraine. The PM said his coalition “will intensify planning now, with real urgency” and reiterated that the “*** is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air”. He said: “Together with others, Europe must do the heavy-lifting but to support peace in our continent and to succeed, this effort must have strong US backing. We’re working with the US on this point.” Speaking to journalists after the summit, the PM said he did “not accept that the US is an unreliable ally”, and that the discussions formed a plan that would see the US as allies. The deal will allow Ukraine to use £1.6bn of export finance to buy more than 5,000 air defence missiles, which will be made in Belfast. Sir Keir added: “This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now, and strengthen Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes, because we have to learn from the mistakes of the past.” The PM referred to the Minsk ceasefire deal, made a decade ago between Putin and the then-Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, and violated by Putin. Sir Keir said Ukraine must be able to negotiate peace from a position of strength, and the advanced air defence missiles would enable that. The deal will also create 200 jobs in Northern Ireland and directly support a further 700 jobs in the ***, the Ministry of Defence (MOD) said, through the manufacture of more than 5,000 lightweight-multirole missiles (LMM), which will treble production at Thales factory in Belfast. Earlier this week, the government announced defence spending will rise to 2.5% of national income by 2027 and rise again to 3% “in the next parliament”, giving a rough deadline of 2034. The *** is at a “critical moment” for the future of Ukraine and the security of us all in Europe, Defence Secretary John Healey said. He said: “This new support will help protect Ukraine against drone and missile attacks but it will also help deter further Russian aggression following any end to the fighting. “This new deal delivers on the ***’s ironclad commitment to step up military support for Ukraine, whilst boosting jobs and growth at home.” The missile deal is part of a series of “mega-projects” for Ukraine, being delivered by the MoD’s Hirst taskforce, which aims to build long-term relationships with Ukrainian industry to restore and modernise their defence industrial base. This builds on the 100 Year Partnership signed by the PM and Zelensky in Kyiv in January, which commits to £3bn a year of export finance to acquire military equipment from *** companies. The *** National Armaments Director Andy Start described the latest move as a “critical next step” for the taskforce. He said: “The ***’s defence industry has supported Ukraine from the start of the war and this important contract underlines industry’s ability to scale up production at pace to deliver the world-class defence equipment Ukraine requires. “The substantial increase in LMM production capacity will benefit both Ukraine’s fight tonight, as well as the longer-term security of the ***.” Source link #Keir #Starmer #announces #1.6bn #missile #deal #Ukraine Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Alexander, a four-star cornerback recruit in the class of 2025, was the passenger in a car that crashed around 9 p.m. ET in a suburb of Indianapolis. Per the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Alexander was in a BMW that had tried to pass a car on a two-lane road. From WTHR: “This maneuver was attempted just before the hillcrest. Upon coming over the hill, the BMW saw the Toyota traveling north and realized a ****** was imminent,” the HCSO said in a news release. Police said the BMW pulled to the right to avoid hitting the Toyota and then over corrected, resulting in the vehicle rotating and driving off the east side of the road. The Toyota veered off the east of the road to try and avoid the ****** and ended up hitting a mailbox. Police said the BMW slid through the grass and hit a tree, resulting in the BMW catching on fire. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi issued a statement about Alexander’s death Sunday morning. Alexander was an early enrollee at Pitt in January and was set to begin spring practice with the team. “I received a call this morning that no parent, teacher or coach ever wants to get — the news of the sudden loss of a young and promising life,” Narduzzi wrote. “Our entire program is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of Mason Alexander’s passing. Mason had just enrolled at Pitt in January following his early graduation from Indiana’s Hamilton Southeastern High School. Even during that short time, he made a great impression on all of us. Mason was proud and excited to be a Panther and we felt the same way about having him in our Pitt family. He will always be a Panther to us. The Alexander family and Mason’s many loved ones and friends will be in our prayers.” Alexander committed to Pitt over the summer after an official visit and signed with the school in the December early signing *******. 13. Volodymyr Zelensky meets King Charles at Sandringham Volodymyr Zelensky meets King Charles at Sandringham Volodymyr Zelensky has met King Charles III at Sandringham, after attending a summit of European leaders on ending the war in Ukraine. As the Ukrainian president arrived at the King’s Norfolk residence, local residents, some holding Ukraine flags, gathered outside the estate to witness his entrance by helicopter. Zelensky was in London over the weekend for the talks on European defence, after a fiery exchange with US President Donald Trump in the White House on Friday. Europe is facing a “once in a generation” moment for security, *** Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said after the summit had concluded. The King has previously expressed support for Zelensky and Ukraine, saying the country had experienced “indescribable aggression” following Russia’s “unprovoked attack on their land”. The Ukrainian people have shown “truly remarkable courage and resilience in the face of such human tragedy”, the King said last year. They first met during Zelensky’s surprise visit to the *** in 2023. It is understood today’s meeting was requested by the Ukrainian president, with the agreement of the *** government. Sunday’s meeting has allowed Zelensky to meet the King well before Trump’s second state visit to the ***, which was offered when Sir Keir presented the US president with an invitation letter from the monarch during a visit to Washington last week. While the Ukrainian leader’s visit is an official one, it is less formal than a state visit. Traditionally second-term US presidents are not offered a state visit and have instead been invited for tea or lunch with the monarch at Windsor Castle. Sir Keir said Trump’s last state visit in 2019 had been a “tremendous success” and that the invite for a second visit was “truly historic” and “unprecedented”. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office after reading the letter, Trump said he accepted the invite and that it would be an “honour” to visit the “fantastic” country. When the trip will take place has yet to be announced. Sir Keir dismissed calls by SNP first minister John Swinney to cancel the invite to Trump after his disastrous Oval Office meeting with Zelensky – in which he accused the Ukrainian leader of “gambling with World War Three”. A ‘Stop Trump’ online petition has amassed almost 80,000 signatures since it launched on 28 February. 24. Royal Caribbean passengers angry over major change Royal Caribbean passengers angry over major change When Utopia of the Seas began sailing out of Port Canaveral, it marked a first for Royal Caribbean. The ship became the first Oasis-class ship to move immediately into sailing short 3-4 day itineraries. Previously, the cruise line had moved Allure of the Seas to Port Canaveral to gauge demand for Monday through Friday and Friday through Monday sailings. That proved very successful and it was a major draw for new cruisers. Related: Popular US port to add new fee for cruise passengers The thinking behind using top-tier equipment for shorter sailings is that it exposes people to the best the cruise line has to offer without a long commitment. That, in theory, gives them enough of a taste that they want to come back for more. Using Utopia of the Seas for shorter sailings was an unprecedented move as new Oasis-class ships had always sailed weeklong itineraries. The move has clearly been successful. Royal Caribbean Group CEO Michael Bayley talked about the success of Utopia of the Seas during the cruise line’s third-quarter earnings call. “This quarter, we launched Utopia of the Seas, a ship that has quickly become a game changer for a short Caribbean product, which serves as an important entry point for new to cruise and new to brand. It also skews toward millennials and younger guests. The demand for Utopia has been incredible and has well exceeded our expectations for both ticket prices and onboard revenue,” he said. Image source: Royal Caribbean. Royal Caribbean bets big on short cruises Using Utopia of the Seas for 3-4 sailings has been successful enough that in 2025 Wonder of the Seas will sail those same itineraries out of Miami. This is part of a larger plan by the cruise line to offer more shorter sailings that stop at Royal Caribbean’s private island Perfect Day at CocoCay, and in some cases, its upcoming new beach clubs in Nassau and Cozumel. By the 2026-2027 winter cruising season, only Symphony of the Seas sailing out of Galveston and Allure of the Seas have not been committed for 3-4 day sailings. Symphony will sail 7-day itineraries from its Texas port while the cruise line has not shared where Allure of the Seas, which is currently receiving a massive overhaul while in dry dock, will be sailing out of or what itineraries it will sail. Royal Caribbean will be using its newest class of large ships, Icon-class, to sail 7-day itineraries. Icon of the Seas sails out of Miami while the upcoming Star of the Seas will sail 7-night itineraries from Miami. The third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, will first sail in Europe before offering 7-night cruises out of Fort Lauderdale. Royal Caribbean passengers are not happy Many regular cruisers are not happy to see five of the seven Oasis-class ships committed to sailing 3-4 night itineraries. They shared their comments on the company’s Facebook page. “Been on a cruise and 4 days is definitely not long enough. We went 7 days, and both agreed we should have gone the 10 days! Our thoughts today are, if it was possible, we could again it would be for two weeks,” Sheila Powers wrote. Debbie Havens had doubts as well. “I LOVE the Oasis class ships especially Wonder. We live a distance away and usually do back-to-back weeks for 14 days. Smaller trips make it so much more expensive. They should leave some for the week vacations,” she posted. Many people suggested that short cruises only make sense if you live near the port. “I will never do 3, it’s too much hassle. I am doing a 4 and I have done a 5 but I live so close to a port that it’s worth it. If I had to fly, I would never do less than 7,” shared PilesofLaundry113 on Reddit.
