Downtown L.A.’s Last Department Store About to Close
With bare shelves and signage declaring discounts of up to 70%, the Macy’s department store on 7th Street in downtown Los Angeles is heading for its final days. Last February, the department store’s owners announced that 150 locations were going out of business. “Closing any store is never easy,” Tony Spring, chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. said in a statement. “But as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores.”

This Macy’s reopened as part of The Bloc shopping center in 2015, but is a descendant of The Broadway store, which opened at this same location more than half a century ago. That store relocated from its namesake street four blocks east in 1973 in a spot it had occupied since 1896. The closure of Macy’s means that downtown Los Angeles will be without a full department store for the first time in almost 150 years.

Coulter’s was L.A.’s first department store, opening at Temple and Spring Streets in 1878, and was taken over by The Broadway in 1961. Every one of L.A.’s grand old home-grown department stores, including Robinson’s, Bullocks, and the May Company, evolved into Macy’s. Seventh and Broadway was once the nation’s busiest intersection, sporting the flagship Bullocks store, Clifton’s Cafeteria and the 2,450-seat State theater along a row of 13 cavernous vaudeville and movie houses. A tangle of overhead wires powered the largest electric railway system in the world, which dropped off shoppers at the intersection for a day of shopping and entertainment.

Downtown Los Angeles once made its name as the place to shop at fine stores, brimming with amenities like tea rooms, auditoriums, ticket agencies, free gift-wrapping stations, and dedicated personal shoppers paid on commission. Those grand edifices, along with luxury hotels, movie palaces and towering office buildings defined the center city for generations.

I never saw a crowd at this Macy’s and there are many newer places to shop downtown, from the discount bazaars of Santee Alley to the magnificent Apple Tower Theater store, the luxury boutiques at ROW DTLA and the fancy Swedish clothier Acne Studios on Broadway. We still have a Target, Uniqlo, and Nordstrom Rack around the corner from Macy’s, and a Ross and Burlington Coat Factory on Broadway, just not an old-fashioned department store.

As this last descendant of long-gone stores that were beloved by generations of Angelenos fades away, we look back on what shopping downtown meant in the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries with historic photos from the Los Angeles Public Library photo collection.

A Delta flight that had just taken off from Boston Logan International Airport had to quickly return after a “smoky odor” was detected in the cabin shortly after takeoff, the airline said.
The plane landed safely on Sunday morning and none of the 92 people on board were injured, Delta said.
Delta Flight 1398 was en route to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport in an Airbus A220, according to the airline.
The flight had to turn around after the crew reported fumes in both the flight deck and the cabin, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane returned to Boston at about 9:35 a.m. Sunday.
The airline said an emergency was declared in order to get priority from air traffic control.
Delta said it is “working to get passengers on their journey as quickly and safely as possible.”
The FAA is investigating the matter.

FA Cup ball: Pep Guardiola criticises ball after 20 shots off target
FA Cup ball: Pep Guardiola criticises ball after 20 shots off target
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has criticised the ****** used in England’s domestic cup competitions.
His comments follow those of Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, who was ridiculed earlier in the season when he expressed his anger over the ball being used in the Carabao Cup after a defeat against Newcastle in the semi-final.
City were 3-1 winners in the FA Cup against Championship side Plymouth on Saturday, but had 20 shots off target in the match.
Guardiola said he was not happy with the Mitre ****** used in the FA Cup.
“The ball in the Champions League is exceptional, the ball in the Premier League is exceptional, this one isn’t,” he said. “It’s difficult to control.
“When you lose it [sounds like] you’re complaining, but the ball is not right. In many years it’s happened in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, I know it’s a business and they come to agreements.
“You know how many shots went over? Look at other games. Normally the ball goes inside from these shots. “
Nike ****** are used in the Premier League, with Adidas ****** utilised in Uefa’s European competitions, and Puma ****** for the EFL Cup.
In response to Guardiola’s comments, a Football Association spokesperson said: “Mitre’s Ultimax Pro ball – used in the Emirates FA Cup and all other FA competitions – has been tested in accordance with Fifa testing.
“All footballs in the professional game are required to meet the Fifa Quality pro accreditation, and this ball delivers against all of the testing requirements.
“Alongside Mitre, we understand that preference is subjective, but we’re confident that the ball performs well. With over 350 goals scored in the knockout competition so far, it provides an exciting element to such a competitive tournament.”
City’s three goals in Saturday’s FA Cup game came from 29 shots, of which nine were on target.
In their 4-0 Premier League win over Newcastle United on 15 February, Guardiola’s side had 11 shots with seven on target.
Clubs are given the relevant ****** to train with before cup fixtures.
In the weekend’s FA Cup action, several Premier League sides had a higher percentage of shots on target than in their previous league matches, including Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Bournemouth, Wolves and Newcastle.

XTRIS is a fast-paced arcade-style Playdate game you won’t be able to put down
XTRIS is a fast-paced arcade-style Playdate game you won’t be able to put down
I love a game that screams things like “neato!” and “godlike!” while I’m feverishly pressing buttons and darting my eyes around the screen, trying to make my fingers work as fast as my brain. My skills in the Playdate game XTRIS are definitely not godlike, but there’s just something about that classic arcade announcer voice that makes me think each time, “this is the one where I’ll finally crack the leaderboard.” (It never is).
XTRIS is a $3 game by Fletch Makes Stuff that’ll have you chasing a moving X around a board made up of either four, five or six tiles. The timer’s set to 60 seconds, and in that time you have to land on the X as many times as possible. Each X you collect will go tumbling dramatically off the grid and be added to your score, which is faintly displayed in the background.
If it sounds easy, it’s not. The X moves fast, and as you race after your target using the D-pad to control the movement of a ****** square, things become increasingly intense. The music builds like an alarm that’s telling you time is almost up, and flames start shooting up from the bottom of the screen. All the while, the announcer (voiced by Jordan Carroll) is shouting words of encouragement that start to feel a little ominous by the end. It’s wonderfully chaotic. Despite the relatively simple presentation, XTRIS really lives up to its promise of being a “juicy arcade action directly into the palm of your hand.”
For each of the three levels — Tetromino, Bridge and Squiggle — you’ll be able to see how other players scored, and how you stack up against them. And once you’ve played a certain level a few times, you’ll be shown your own score trends to see how you’re improving (or plateauing). I keep telling myself, “just one more try” when I finish a round, and we all know how that goes.
There’s a Zen Mode for each level as well, so you can work on your dexterity without the time crunch and with a chiller track playing. If you poke around in the menu, you can also find some unlockable characters and symbols to switch up the appearance of the game, swapping the X for something like a frog or a slice of pizza. XTRIS is available on the Playdate Catalog now for $3.

Crypto prices rally after Trump backs ‘crypto reserve’
Crypto prices rally after Trump backs ‘crypto reserve’
US President Donald Trump has revealed the names of five cryptocurrencies that he says he’d like to be included in a new strategic reserve to make the US “the Crypto Capital of the World”.
The market prices of the five coins he named – Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Solana and Cardano – all swiftly jumped after the announcement.
During Trump’s presidential campaign, he aggressively courted the crypto community. The previous US president, Joe Biden, had overseen a crackdown on crypto due to concerns about fraud and money laundering.
It is unclear how the new stockpile will work. More information is expected on Friday, when Trump plans to host the first Crypto Summit at the White House.
In a social media post on Sunday, Trump said he had signed an order which “directed the Presidential Working Group to move forward on a Crypto Strategic Reserve that includes XRP, SOL, and ADA”.
About an hour later he added in another post: “And, obviously, BTC and ETH, as other valuable Cryptocurrencies, will be at the heart of the Reserve.”
The first three coins he named jumped by up to 62% on Sunday.
Bitcoin and Ethereum also jumped by more than 10% each.
The posts marked a new upward turn for crypto prices, which had dropped sharply since spiking after his election.
Shortly after taking office in January, Trump signed an executive to create a presidential working group tasked with proposing new crypto laws and regulations.
The order called on the group to “evaluate the potential creation and maintenance of a national digital asset stockpile” that could use “cryptocurrencies lawfully seized by the Federal Government through its law enforcement efforts”.
It is unclear whether creating a new national strategic stockpile would require an act of Congress.
Trump had previously been a crypto critic, telling Fox News in 2021 that Bitcoin is a “scam”.
But in recent weeks, both he and his wife Melania Trump have launched their own cryptocurrencies, leading to accusations that they are trying to profit from his White House policies.

Wall Street ends higher after Zelensky, Trump clash at White House
Wall Street ends higher after Zelensky, Trump clash at White House
Wall Street has ended higher after a choppy trading session, with Dell Technologies dipping and other tech stocks climbing after a meeting between the US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky ended in disaster.
Zelensky and Trump traded verbal blows at the White House before the world’s media on Friday. This created fresh uncertainty over Ukraine’s war with Russia for investors already worried about sticky US inflation and a tepid economy.
The S&P 500 moved lower immediately after the clash before recovering and ending the day with a gain.
Zelensky left the White House without signing a much-vaunted deal between Ukraine and the US over the joint development of natural resources.
“The news, if you watched it live, it was pretty worrisome. It got heated, and Zelensky is considered an ally of the US,” said Adam Sarhan, chief executive at 50 Park Investments.
“That’s why the market sold off, but then cooler heads prevailed. Zelensky either is going to make a deal or he’s not.”
Dell dropped 4.7 per cent after the PC maker forecast a decline in its adjusted gross margin rate for fiscal 2026.
Peer HP Inc fell 6.8 per cent after its quarterly profit forecasts missed expectations.
Nvidia and Tesla rose almost 4 per cent each and lifted the S&P 500.
The S&P 500 climbed 1.59 per cent to end the session at 5,954.50 points.

The Nasdaq gained 1.63 per cent to 18,847.28 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.39 per cent to 43,840.91 points.
Volume on US exchanges was heavy, with 17.5 billion shares traded, compared to an average of 15.4 billion shares over the previous 20 sessions.
All 11 S&P 500 sector indexes rose, led by financials , up 2.1 per cent, followed by a 1.8 per cent gain in consumer discretionary.
For the week, the S&P 500 fell about 1 per cent, the Nasdaq lost 3.5 per cent and the Dow climbed almost 1 per cent.
The Nasdaq lost about 4 per cent for all of February, its deepest monthly loss since April 2024. The S&P 500 fell 1.45 per cent for the month and the Dow lost 1.6 per cent.
Earlier, a Commerce Department report showed inflation rose in January in line with expectations. However, consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the economy, dropped 0.2 per cent after an upwardly revised 0.8 per cent increase in December.
This could complicate the Federal Reserve’s deliberations on monetary policy.
“Spending came in lower than we were looking for… most of it I would attribute to a cooling economy, which presents a dilemma for the Fed in the sense that you still have inflation and you have an economy that is moving lower. If you add them together, that equals stagflation,” said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Spartan Capital Securities.
Friday’s report is important for investors trying to gauge the next move for the central bank after policymakers reiterated a hawkish stance. Investors worry Trump’s policies, especially trade restrictions, could exacerbate US inflation.
“Tariff talk certainly is having a negative effect on the stock market, and it probably will keep a lid on stock market advances until there’s more clarity around that,” said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.
Traders see the Fed lowering borrowing costs twice by December, little changed from before the report, according to data compiled by LSEG. Investors will assess comments from Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee later in the day.
The CBOE Volatility Index, also known as Wall Street’s fear gauge, touched a one-month high and was last up at 21.26 points.
Advancing issues outnumbered falling ones within the S&P 500 by a 7.1-to-one ratio.
The S&P 500 posted 39 new highs and 14 new lows; the Nasdaq recorded 43 new highs and 332 new lows.

Tony Robbins calls on Americans to get ‘head out of the sand’ and says Social Security isn’t enough, urging action
Tony Robbins calls on Americans to get ‘head out of the sand’ and says Social Security isn’t enough, urging action
Tony Robbins issues dire warning about retirement — calls on Americans to get ‘head out of the sand’ and says Social Security isn’t enough. Here’s the ‘ultimate power’ you need now
America’s Social Security program is both popular and woefully underfunded.
Experts have been warning that the social safety net millions of Americans rely on is on the verge of fraying. Now, personal finance author and motivational speaker Tony Robbins is calling on people of all ages to start weaving their own safety net.
“Time to get your head out of the sand and do some easy number crunching to find out where you are and where you need to be,” his website advises.
“Remember this: Anticipation is the ultimate power. Losers react; leaders anticipate.”
Robbins might be preaching to the choir. According to the AARP, 74% of Americans believe Social Security will not provide enough to live on during their retirement. Two-thirds of them also consider the monthly benefits too low to live on.
If you share these concerns, here’s what you can do to secure your financial future.
Since Social Security payments are likely to be insufficient, creating your own independent nest egg seems like an obvious solution. Robbins recommends setting a target to save at least 20 times your annual living expenses to fund a comfortable retirement.
On average, U.S. adults currently believe the “magic number” to retire comfortably is $1.46 million, according to the Northwestern Mutual 2024 Planning & Progress Study. This estimate is 15% higher than in 2023, even though Americans’ average retirement savings dropped to $88,400 in 2024, down nearly $1,000 from $89,300 in 2023 .
Read more: Home prices in America could fly through the roof in 2025 — here’s the big reason why and how to take full advantage (with as little as $10)
Simply put, most Americans know they need to be saving and know how much they need to save but are failing to actually act and accumulate cash.
A relatively simple savings and investment plan should help you stay ahead of the game. The average U.S. household income in 2023 was $80,610.
If you’re in your mid-30s and you have that kind of income, you can reach the $1.46 million milestone within 31 years by putting away 10% of that income ($8,000 a year or $666 a month) and investing it in a low-cost index fund that has historically delivered a 10% annual return.
Story Continues
If your retirement is less than 30 years off, or you’re struggling to save because of debt and the cost of living, consider moving somewhere where the cost of living is lower.
Given the rising cost of living, lackluster Social Security benefits and lack of retirement savings, it’s easy to see why many Americans find it more appealing to retire abroad.
As of 2024, 21% of Americans said they would like to move abroad, up from just 10% in 2011, according to a Gallup poll. Meanwhile, the Social Security Administration recently reported that more than 760,000 retirees were collecting their benefits while living overseas.
Moving to a country with reasonable quality of life and lower costs of living, such as Japan, Panama, Portugal or Greece could be a solution for those struggling to beat the ongoing retirement crisis.
Despite its flaws and insufficiencies, Americans broadly support the Social Security program and want their government to salvage it.
A January 2025 poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found two-thirds of Americans believe the government is spending “too little” on the Social Security program. An AARP survey found 85% of Americans support salvaging the program even if it means higher taxes for everyone.
According to the National Institute on Retirement Security, 87% of U.S. adults said the program’s funding should be a top priority for elected officials, regardless of the nation’s fiscal situation.
Given the program’s popularity, taxpayers should consider reaching out to members of Congress to push for funding reform.

Who is Brad Sigmon? The South Carolina ********* set for first U.S. firing squad execution in 15 years
Who is Brad Sigmon? The South Carolina ********* set for first U.S. firing squad execution in 15 years
“Ladies and gentlemen of the jury,” Brad Sigmon testified at his trial in July 2002. “I am guilty.”
The South Carolina killer was placed on death row after pleading guilty to the double ******* of his ex-girlfriend’s parents, striking them each nine times in the head with a baseball bat.
More than two decades later, the 67-year-old is set to become the first inmate to die by firing squad in the U.S. since the ********* Ronnie Lee Gardner in 2010 and the oldest person ever to be executed in South Carolina.
On March 7, Sigmon is set to be strapped to a chair, a hood placed over his head with a target marking his heart in the death chamber at the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia, where he is being held.
Standing about 15 feet away, three volunteers are then expected to open fire at him through a small opening.
In June 2021 Sigmon avoided “Old Sparky,” the 113-year-old electric chair housed at the Central Correctional Institution in Columbia, as the law gave death row inmates the statutory right to choose their method of execution, including firing squad – which was not yet available.
Sigmon narrowly avoided the electric chair in 2021 (South Carolina Department of Corrections)
He was again given reprieve that year and for a third time in May 2022 due to the state not having a supply of drugs to administer a lethal injection.
Sigmon chose his manner of execution, the other two choices being lethal injection and electrocution.
The South Carolina Supreme Court ruled last July to allow executions to resume after a 13-year hiatus, with ********* Freddie Eugene Owens put to death by lethal injection two months later in September 2024. The high court also ruled that death by firing squad was a legal form of punishment, despite criticism that it is an inhumane form of justice.
Sigmon didn’t pick the electric chair over fears it would “burn and cook him alive,” his attorney Gerald King wrote in a statement.
He decided against being administered a fatal dose of pentobarbital after three previous recipients of the lethal injection in the state were not declared dead for at least 20 minutes despite it set to work in a fraction of the time, his lawyers added.
Opponents of the death penalty called on Governor Henry McMaster to grant Sigmon clemency soon after his death warrant was issued on February 7. However, no South Carolina governor has previously commuted the sentence of a death row inmate.
Sigmon, whose online prison records show no violent offenses, is “deeply remorseful,” King said.
On Wednesday, his attorneys filed a motion with the state’s Supreme Court requesting a stay of his execution. They said he is being forced to choose a violent death by firing squad because, without more information, he believes the lethal injection would lead to a tortuous death.
The crime
Sigmon is set to be the first death row inmate to die by firing squad in the U.S. since 2010 (South Carolina Department of Corrections via AP)
Sigmon and his partner, Rebecca Barbare, had been in a relationship for about three years before it ended at the beginning of 2001. The pair had been living together in a trailer park near his girlfriend’s parents, David and Gladys Larke, in Greenville.
After a night of smoking crack ******** and drinking, Sigmon told a friend that he would “get Becky for leaving him the way she did” and “tie her parents up,” according to court documents.
When Barbare took her children to school, Sigmon arrived at the Larkes’ house at about 8 a.m. armed with a baseball bat, which he used to bludgeon the couple to death.
The husband’s “skull was basically almost broken in two,” the court heard during the trial.
Sigmon stole David Larke’s gun and waited for his ex-girlfriend to arrive home.
Upon her arrival, Barbare was ushered into a car at gunpoint. The woman managed to jump out of the vehicle and escape the scene, evading shots fired in her direction, per the documents. Sigmon then managed to flee the state.
Sigmon later testified that he told officers he had planned to both kill Barbare and himself.
A manhunt was launched and he was eventually captured at a campground in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, after being on the run for 11 days. He was then extradited to South Carolina.
The trial
An undated photograph inside the Broad River Correctional Institution’s execution room (AP)
After his arrest, Sigmon was indicted by a South Carolina grand jury for two counts of ******* and a first-degree burglary charge, among other offenses.
He eventually stood trial in July 2002 where prosecutors sought the death penalty due to the Larkes’ “most horrific death.”
They presented evidence that the victims likely lived for up to five minutes after the assault, hemorrhaging and coughing up blood.
Sigmon’s defense team presented testimony regarding his mental state and extensive history of drug use stemming from his “recurrent major depressive disorder” or his “chemical dependency disorders,” according to court documents.
The jury unanimously found him guilty on both ******* charges and he was issued two death sentences along with 30 years in prison for the burglary charge.
Sigmon was placed on death row on July 20, 2002.

US aircraft carrier enters South Korean port as show of force
US aircraft carrier enters South Korean port as show of force
SEOUL (Reuters) – The U.S. aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson arrived at the southern city of Busan in South Korea on Sunday as a show of force, South Korea’s navy said.
The visit was part of the “ironclad” commitment of the United States to extended deterrence and to show readiness by the military alliance between Seoul and Washington against North Korea, according to the navy.
The nuclear-powered vessel belonging to Carrier Strike Group 1 was joined by the guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton and the USS Sterett guided-missile destroyer, the navy said.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a test launch of strategic cruise missiles last month and ordered full readiness to use its nuclear attack capability, according to state media.
It marks the first time a U.S. aircraft carrier has called at the country since June when the nuclear-powered Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Busan to take part in joint military exercises.
In November 2023, the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson visited in Busan.

Trudeau to bring up Trump’s threat to annex Canada in meeting with King Charles
Trudeau to bring up Trump’s threat to annex Canada in meeting with King Charles
********* Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will meet with King Charles III, the country’s head of state, on Monday where he will discuss U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to make Canada the 51st state.
The king has come under criticism in Canada for being silent about Trump’s threats to annex Canada.
Trudeau said in London on Sunday he will discuss matters of importance to Canadians with Charles and said “nothing seems more important to Canadians right now than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation.”
Charles is the head of state in Canada, which is a member of the British Commonwealth of former colonies.
Overall, the antiroyal movement in Canada is small, but the silence of the monarch on Trump’s threats have spurred talk in recent days.
Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney said “for Canadians disappointed that King Charles has not commented” on Trump’s threats he can only act on the advice of Canada’s prime minister.
“The Government of Canada should ask the Head of State to underscore ********* sovereignty,” Kenney posted on X.
The king, who met Sunday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, has invited Trump to come to Scotland for a state visit.
Trump comments on Tate brothers, King Charles invitation and Ukraine during Starmer meeting
13:10
Though Canadians are somewhat indifferent to the monarchy, many had great affection for the late Queen Elizabeth, whose silhouette marks their coins. She was the head of state for 45% of Canada’s existence and visited the country 22 times as monarch.
Visits by Charles over the years have attracted sparse crowds
“Canadians will need to decide what purpose King Charles III serves as King of Canada if he can’t even speak up for our sovereignty,” Artur Wilczynski, a former ********* public servant, posted on X.
Abolishing the monarchy would mean changing the constitution. That’s an inherently risky undertaking, given how delicately it is engineered to unite a nation of 41 million people that embraces English-speakers, French-speakers, Indigenous tribes and a constant flow of new immigrants.

*** Open: Teenager Luke Littler thrashes James Wade in final to win £110,000 in Minehead
*** Open: Teenager Luke Littler thrashes James Wade in final to win £110,000 in Minehead
Wade started poorly, missing double eight to win the first leg, and Littler punished him to steal an early break of throw before he powered into a 3-0 lead with a staggering average of more than 120.
Littler then won a scrappy 20-dart fourth leg as Wade blew an opportunity to get a foothold in the match, before normal service resumed in the fifth.
Wade’s efforts turned to calamity in the ninth leg when he was left wincing after he jabbed himself in the hand with a dart when stepping from the oche.
Indeed, a whitewash looked on the cards before Wade scrambled to land a messy 21-dart 10th leg with double five.
Littler, who threw nine 180s, went into cruise control for the remainder of the contest, which allowed Wade to bag another leg with a checkout of 85 to reduce the deficit to 10-2.
It made little difference to the outcome as Littler ruthlessly closed out a match in which Wade was barely able to land a glove on him.
“He absolutely bashed me to bits but what can you do against that?” Wade said.
“He was the far superior player, as much as it kills me to admit it, but it is what it is. For me, it’s a great step in the right direction.
“Fair play to Luke – at the moment, he’s probably the best or the second-best darts player in the world.”

‘This is going to be clunky’: Swans begin AFL comeback
‘This is going to be clunky’: Swans begin AFL comeback
This is going to hurt.
The pragmatist in Sydney coach Dean Cox is never one to waste time with pretence.
“I said that to the players. Pre-Christmas, I said, this is going to be clunky,” Cox told AAP.
“It’s going to not feel right at times. We’re going to get exposed, and I don’t know when it’ll all gel.”
Figuring out how to guide an AFL team after a heartbreaking grand final loss as a first-year coach can be a bit like that.
Even more so when the team had also been belted in a grand final only two years previously, and have lost four in total since the club’s last premiership.
By halftime of last year’s decider, any chance of Sydney emerging with their first flag in 12 years was all but shot.
The Brisbane Lions had silenced the minor premiers with seven-straight goals in the second term to build a 46-point lead at the main break.
Finals hero Isaac Heeney could hardly walk with a stress fracture in his ankle, and proven stars Errol Gulden and Chad Warner struggled to fire in his place.
Sydney, the side that had been leading the league since round nine, lost by 60 points.
Parallels to their 81-point grand final hammering to Geelong in 2022 were easily drawn, though Warner, in the aftermath, admitted this felt worse.
John Longmire stepped down as coach less than two months later, citing the need to rest after 14 seasons.
It was his fourth grand final loss since guiding the Swans to an epic grand final win over the Hawks in 2012.
Cox was handed the keys after a long stint as Longmire’s assistant, ignoring overtures to return home and coach West Coast.
He set the tone of his tenure with a day-long review of their loss to Brisbane and walked away clear in focus.
“The way we defend, we needed to change,” Cox said.
“It wasn’t just the grand final – that was one part of it.
“Towards the back end of the year, we dropped away from what we were really known for – a real hard, contested, uncompromising brand of footy.
“That’s something we have to get back to.
“The difference between having to do everything from your back half is different than playing a front-half game of footy.”
Conquering the mental game will be just as important for Sydney under Cox.
The Swans had lost their resolve and connection under immense pressure from the Lions, kicking just nine goals from 49 inside-50s.
In comparison, Brisbane slammed through 18 majors from 51 entries.
Another look at the stat sheet will show Sydney gave up 62 turnovers to 53 and allowed the Lions to take 267 uncontested possessions to their 189.
“One thing we’ve tried to do over the whole pre-season is to test the players mentally off the field,” Cox said.
“It’s all about them being able to problem-solve and adapt themselves, identify a situation, stay calm, clear on what they need to do.”
Hawthorn are first up on the long road back to a grand final, welcoming last year’s late-season bolters to the SCG on Friday.
The Swans will have to go about it without their skipper Callum Mills (foot) and key ball winner Errol Gulden (ankle).
Mills is not expected to return earlier than the club’s round-three bye after suffering a plantar fascia tear, while Gulden is set for a lengthy time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery.
Gulden fractured his ankle in their final pre-season match against Gold Coast.
There are also question marks on the fitness of stars Tom Papley (ankle), Brodie Grundy (knee) and Logan McDonald (ankle).
Punters would be forgiven for looking at the undermanned line-up and predicting a tough path ahead for the Swans, but Cox is sticking to his convictions.
“Oh, well, that’ll always come. The external narrative you can’t change,” Cox said.
“For me and for the footy club, it’s about a new start.
“We need to implement what we’re trying to change, and whether that’s straight away and you get results or it’s not, we’re on a course to be as consistent as we possibly can.
“We’re under no illusions. We’re going to get tested.”

Measles vaccines given long ago could be less effective now, doctors say
Measles vaccines given long ago could be less effective now, doctors say
For those who were vaccinated for measles many decades ago, there’s a chance the protection has worn off by now.
Amid the current measles outbreak in West Texas — and with cases also reported in New Mexico, New Jersey and several other states — some doctors are warning about the possibility of legacy vaccines becoming less effective over time.
Measles is a highly contagious virus for those who have not previously been infected or vaccinated, with up to a 90% chance of transmission.
Measles Cases Continue To Spread In Multiple States Following Child’s Death
The measles vaccine was first introduced in 1968. Three years later, in 1971, the MMR vaccine made its debut, providing a trifecta of protection against measles, mumps and rubella.
Some doctors are warning about the possibility of legacy vaccines becoming less effective over time.
A couple of decades after the release of the MMR vaccine, measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000.

“The standard recommendation from health authorities like the CDC is a two-dose series of the MMR vaccine,” Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier told Fox News Digital.
“For most people, these two doses provide lifelong immunity — about 97% effectiveness against measles.”
The question of whether someone should get another measles vaccine depends on a few factors, like their vaccination history, age and health status, according to Saphier, who practices in New York.
“If you’re an adult who got both doses as a kid, you’re likely fine unless you’re in a high-risk group — such as healthcare workers or travelers to outbreak areas — where a booster might be considered,” she said.
People born before 1957 presumably have natural immunity, as they were likely exposed to measles before vaccines became available, according to the doctor.
“Adults who were vaccinated for measles between 1963 and 1968 should check their vaccination history to determine which vaccine they received,” Saphier advised.
Measles Outbreak In Texas Continues To Worsen In Kids
“During that time, a version of the vaccine that used an inactivated form of the virus was available that was found to be not as effective and was ultimately withdrawn.”
Studies show that antibody levels can wane over decades, but actual measles cases in fully vaccinated people remain rare, Saphier added.

“No hard data says people need a third shot routinely, but if you’re worried, a blood test can check your antibody levels,” she said.
“As with everything in medicine, there are rare risks to vaccinating and substantial risks to not vaccinating.”

Each person’s situation is different and should be weighed carefully after a thorough conversation with a trusted medical team, Saphier added.
Dr. Marc Siegel, clinical professor of medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center and a Fox News medical contributor, also emphasized the importance of measles vaccinations — “particularly with the number of circulating measles cases and underimmunized people coming into the U.S. at a time when there is a big measles surge around the world.”
The measles vaccine was first introduced in 1968. Three years later, in 1971, the MMR vaccine made its debut, providing a trifecta of protection against measles, mumps and rubella.
For those who are traveling to an area where a measles outbreak is occurring, he recommends that they see a doctor for a measles “titer test” and get a booster if they are not showing immunity. (The titer test measures an individual’s level of immunity to the virus.)
“This is not yet an official suggestion anywhere, but I do check measles titers in many of my patients, and if they are low, I may give a booster as a precaution,” Siegel said.
MMR is a live virus vaccine and cannot be given to pregnant women or immunocompromised people, the doctor noted.

So far in 2025, a total of 164 cases of measles have been reported in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
A vast majority of those (140) are in Texas. Nine cases have been reported in New Mexico, with the remainder in California, Georgia, Kentucky, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
