  3. ‘Untapped potential’: Shawn Blore had the best year of his life in 2024, now he’s tipping the same for Stefano Utoikamanu at the Storm ‘Untapped potential’: Shawn Blore had the best year of his life in 2024, now he’s tipping the same for Stefano Utoikamanu at the Storm Shawn Blore enjoyed the best year of his young career at the Storm last season, and it’s why he’s warned the rest of the NRL that new recruit Stefano Utoikamanu is set for something special as he begins his “golden opportunity” in Melbourne. Utoikamanu was one of the most sought-after props on the market last year, with the Storm edging out the Bulldogs to sign the one-time Blues forward on a three-year deal. The 24-year-old is seen as the missing piece of the puzzle at a Storm side that is overflowing with superstars in key positions but fell short in the grand final where the Panthers dominated the middle. Camera IconShawn Blore told Stefano Utoikamanu last year that his career would reach new heights at the Storm. Credit: Supplied Man mountain Nelson Asofa-Solomona missed that match through suspension, while veteran Christian Welch was medically retired last month, with Utoikamanu tipped to provide the star power up front that they’ve been missing. He had some terrific games at the Wests Tigers but is now ready to take the next step in his career, with the big man showing off his power with a try in the Storm’s second pre-season match. “He probably has that sense of having untapped potential,” Blore said. “You could probably use me as an example of coming down and playing good footy, so for him, this is a golden opportunity. “I remember sending him a message after the grand final and said this is the place you want to be if you want to be a great player. “The amount of care and love they have for you here is second to none, and so far in the pre-season, he’s been playing like he’s been here for five years. “You saw a taste of what he can do in the trials, but honestly, that’s nothing for him.” The minor premiers will be just about unbeatable if their star recruit follows in Blore’s footsteps after the back-rower went from winning six games in his first three seasons with the Tigers to starting in a grand final. Blore had career highs in all the major stats last season as he averaged 73 minutes per game on the left edge and turned into a genuine weapon in attack. Her also earnt a Test debut with Samoa. “I knew I had a good game of footy in me, but I just needed someone to get it out of me,” he said, with Blore finishing in the top 10 for offloads in the NRL last year. “I still feel like I’m at the tip of the iceberg in terms of getting better and playing even better footy than I have been. “When I look at last year, of course I look at it as a successful season, but I still feel there’s a lot more left in me that I don’t really know that’s there. “I’m grateful for the season that I had, but it makes me even more excited for the season coming ahead.” Source link #Untapped #potential #Shawn #Blore #year #life #hes #tipping #Stefano #Utoikamanu #Storm Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  4. Albuquerque man shot at Smith’s after intervening in suspicious activity Albuquerque man shot at Smith’s after intervening in suspicious activity ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It was a typical trip to a local grocery store for one Albuquerque man until he saw suspicious activity and decided to intervene. Jeremy Gibson said he was walking out of the Smith’s on Carlisle and Constitution when he noticed three young men putting on neck gaiters. “In a very nonchalant way, I just kept walking, and I said, ‘Hey, why are you guys putting masks on? Are you getting ready to rob the store?’ And it was more of just a comment, but then their eyes got really big, and I knew that they were actually getting ready to rob the store,” said Jeremy Gibson, victim. One person killed in officer-involved shooting in northeast Albuquerque Gibson said he warned security of the potential danger, and as he was leaving the parking lot, shots rang out. One bullet hit and went through Gibson’s face. He recalled immediately losing sight in his left eye. Without a phone, Gibson said he drove to the Hampton Inn on Carlisle, where a couple checking in helped him. Gibson said the last he heard from detectives, they were still looking into video evidence. But he’s frustrated he hasn’t learned more in the nearly two weeks since the shooting. With at least four more surgeries ahead of him, Gibson is grateful to the friends, family members, and strangers who’ve raised nearly $20,000 to help with medical bills. 6. Covid inquiry focuses on PPE deals and the use of a ‘VIP’ lane Covid inquiry focuses on PPE deals and the use of a ‘VIP’ lane Getty Images The Covid public inquiry will start four weeks of hearings on Monday, looking into the purchase and distribution of billions of pounds’ worth of medical equipment during the pandemic. In total, it’s thought £48bn was spent on personal protective equipment (PPE), the test-and-trace programme, hospital supplies and the vaccine rollout. Nearly 10% of contracts were awarded to firms with a link to the Conservative government in power at the time, according to the organisation Transparency International. Bereaved families have accused the inquiry of a “potential whitewash” after it emerged representatives of PPE suppliers will not be called upon to give evidence. The ‘VIP lane’ This fifth section of the inquiry will hear from 50 witnesses, expected to include law experts, civil servants, politicians and transparency campaigners. Questioning will cover the value of contracts awarded to companies in the pandemic, spending controls, the prevalence of fraud and the steps taken to eliminate it. The inquiry will also look in detail at the use of the so-called “VIP lane” – officially known as the high priority lane – to award government contracts. Introduced in April 2020, the idea was to treat offers to supply PPE with greater urgency if they came with a recommendation from ministers, MPs, members of the House of Lords, or other senior officials. At the time the government said there was a “desperate need” to protect health and social care staff, and it was argued swift action was required to secure PPE. A National Audit Office report later found that up to the end of July 2020, about one in 10 suppliers in the high priority lane was awarded a contract, while the figure was less than one in 100 for other suppliers. The government ordered more than 30m masks, gowns and other items of PPE during Covid, with contracts totalling £14.6bn. This part of the inquiry will also look at the purchase of ventilators to help patients breathe, as well as millions of lateral flow and PCR tests. Lobby’s father, Femi – a 60-year-old regular gym-goer with no underlying health conditions – died of Covid in April 2020 Whitewash claims Bereaved families have accused the inquiry of “protecting PPE suppliers from scrutiny”, after it emerged the inquiry would not seek evidence from commercial firms involved in the contracts. Lobby Akinnola, whose father Femi died in April 2020, said individual suppliers need to be held to account. “If people are not called to give evidence, then how are we ever going to know what went wrong?” he asked. “Covid cost the lives of nearly 250,000 people in the ***, and if we don’t take every step we can to learn from mistakes, we are going to leave a weakness in our response.” A spokesman for the Covid inquiry said it did not need to hear evidence directly from PPE firms as the focus “is on how the government responded to suppliers’ offers”. “Our role is not to pursue criminal investigations into individuals or suppliers – that is a matter for law enforcement,” he said. The inquiry also ruled in January that any sensitive evidence about PPE Medpro, the supplier linked to Baroness Michelle ***** and her husband Doug Barrowman, would be held in private to avoid prejudicing any criminal investigation. The inquiry’s chair, Baroness Hallett, has already taken evidence on other subjects including pandemic planning and political decision-making, the impact on the NHS and the vaccine rollout. Future phases later this year will cover the care sector, test-and-trace, the impact on children, and the economy. 8. An Undervalued Wide Moat Stock to Buy According to Analysts An Undervalued Wide Moat Stock to Buy According to Analysts We recently compiled a list of the 12 Undervalued Wide Moat Stocks to Buy According to Analysts. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) stands against the other undervalued wide moat stocks. As per BlackRock, European equity gains have managed to outpace the US to start 2025. Despite this, the asset manager expects the US to reclaim leadership this year as the corporate earnings strength and the AI theme broaden out. The US equities have long exceeded the performance of their global peers. BlackRock expects that this has been made possible because of deeper capital markets and relative deregulation which promote risk-taking. The US can keep its edge, despite the S&P 500 lagging so far this year. As per Savita Subramanian, head of US Equity and Quantitative Strategy for BofA Global Research, the market has been broadening out. Last year and the year before that, the mega-cap tech companies managed to outperform the rest of the S&P. However, in the current year, broader market trends are visible. As per Subramanian, higher productivity and reshoring of manufacturing to the US are the 2 positive forces that are expected to fuel potential market growth beyond the tech sector. As per Reuters, the volatility is expected to increase due to tariff announcements, policy changes from President Donald Trump, and job cuts, resulting in uncertainty. Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial in Troy, Michigan, has a year-end forecast for the S&P 500 of 6,500 as his “base case.” READ ALSO: 7 Best Stocks to Buy For Long-Term and 8 Cheap Jim Cramer Stocks to Invest In. BlackRock expects that mega-cap tech and other AI-linked stocks will keep driving the US equity returns, mainly as and when the AI adoption grows. That being said, there are signs of earnings strength broadening beyond technology. The analysts now anticipate tech to post 18% earnings growth this year in comparison to 11% for the broader index. As per the LSEG data, this is a smaller gap versus 2024. Overall, strong economic growth, broadening of earnings growth and a quality tilt underpin the firm’s conviction and overweight in US stocks as compared to other regions. The valuations for the big tech are backed by healthy earnings, and less lofty valuations for several other sectors. As per Kristy Akullian, CFA, Head of iShares Investment Strategy, there are tailwinds potentially favoring US equities over the rest of the world, mainly large-cap companies. The relatively easy financial conditions, healthy consumer balance sheets, and the expectations of deregulation and tax cuts continue to support the positive view. Story Continues To list the 12 Undervalued Wide Moat Stocks to Buy According to Analysts, we used a screener and sifted through several media reports to choose companies having an economic moat and that analysts see upside to. Next, we filtered out the ones that trade at a forward P/E of less than ~20.0x. Finally, the stocks are arranged in ascending order of their average upside potential, as of February 28. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 373.4% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 218 percentage points (see more details here). Wells Fargo & Company (WFC): ‘The Number One Bank, Well-Run and All-American,’ Declares Jim Cramer! A team of bankers in suits, discussing the success of the company’s banking products. Average Upside Potential: ~12.2% Forward P/E as of February 28: ~13.5x Number of Hedge Fund Holders: 96 Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) is a financial services company, which provides diversified banking, investment, mortgage, and consumer and commercial finance products and services. The financial services giant enjoys a wide economic moat, stemming from the cost advantages and switching costs. Furthermore, its extensive branch network and healthy market position offer a solid foundation for growth. The focus on efficiency and cost-cutting initiatives resulted in improving operational performance, placing it well to capitalize on economic recovery. Analyst Glenn Thum from Phillip Securities maintained a “Buy” rating on the company’s stock, providing a price target of $85.00. The rating is backed by a combination of factors, such as Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC)’s financial performance and strategic initiatives. As per the analyst, the outlook for 2025 is positive, with expected growth in NII due to loan expansion and reduced market funding costs, together with further decrease in expenses. Such factors, along with the continued increase in non-interest income, mainly in investment banking and trading activities, support the rating. Elsewhere, Bank of America Securities also gave a “Buy” rating on Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC)’s stock with a price objective of $86.00. For FY 2025, the company expects net interest income to be ~1% – 3% higher than in 2024 and non-interest expense of ~$54.2 billion. Oakmark Funds, advised by Harris Associates, released its Q4 2024 investor letter. Here is what the fund said: “Wells Fargo & Company (NYSE:WFC) was the top contributor during the quarter. The U.S.-headquartered diversified bank’s stock price rose after reporting what we see as solid third-quarter earnings where the company’s efficiency ratio continued to improve as expenses were well controlled. The fee income segment also performed well, growing 12%. In addition, Wells Fargo had the opportunity to repurchase $3.5 billion in shares during the *******, bringing the full-year repurchase to roughly $16 billion. In November, the stock price continued its upward trend following the U.S. presidential election as investors are optimistic that the financials sector will benefit from ******* regulations and lower corporate taxes, thus stimulating a better environment for dealmaking. We continue to believe that Wells Fargo is a competitively advantaged bank that can use its superior business mix and return potential to unlock further value.” Overall WFC ranks 11th on our list of the undervalued wide moat stocks to buy according to analysts. While we acknowledge the potential of WFC as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some deeply undervalued AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns, and doing so within a shorter time frame. 10. ******* family ‘financially broken’ by wait for benefits ******* family ‘financially broken’ by wait for benefits Kerry Bolton Oliver Hercombe’s family said they had been “financially broken” by the additional living costs since his ******* diagnosis Families of children and young people with ******* are struggling financially for several months waiting for benefits to help cover extra costs caused by the illness, according to a charity. Young Lives vs ******* says families need “immediate” help with additional living costs, which amount to £700 a month on average – and is calling for quicker access to the funds. One family has said they were left “financially broken” by the extra living costs after their 16-year-old son Oliver’s leg had to be amputated because he had a rare type of *******. The government says it is committed to giving people access to benefits in a “timely manner”, but acknowledges that “waits are too high”. ‘If I don’t have electricity, he can’t walk’ Kerry Bolton, from Solihull, said she had to wait five months before a decision was made on her benefits application after her son Oliver was diagnosed with *******, aged 16. “The hospital is an hour away from us and I don’t drive. It was costing us £48 a day for us to travel in taxis there and back.” Oliver later underwent a leg amputation, meaning his family had to buy new clothes to fit him. They also faced higher electricity bills to charge his prosthetic leg, Ms Bolton said. “Ollie’s leg needs electricity…if I don’t have electricity, he can’t walk.” Ms Bolton said she also had to use more energy to heat her home to keep Oliver warm, because of his immunosuppression treatment. Kerry Bolton Oliver’s prosthetic leg needs to be charged regularly, which has increased the family’s energy bill, his mother says During a child’s ******* treatment, families may need to travel to distant appointments, buy special food, use more electricity and heating, pay for childcare for siblings, and stay in hotels. Under *** law, ******* patients may be entitled to benefits to help with costs. However, patients are not eligible for financial support until they have been ill for three months. They then face a further wait of four months on average for their application to be assessed, according to Young Lives vs *******, which has interviewed hundreds of patients and put out a new report. The charity is calling for families to qualify for benefits immediately following a diagnosis. Danielle Roberts Nine-year-old Jasmine’s family had to make long car journeys for her treatment Danielle Roberts, from North Wales, told the BBC that she experienced financial “strain” as soon as her nine-year-old daughter Jasmine was diagnosed with ******* last year, but she did not receive any benefits for eight months. “We were just thrown into this world where…our child’s got ******* and we don’t know if she’s going to survive, along with dealing with the financial impact. “You’ve still got all these bills to pay on top of going back and forward to hospital, which was an hour and 15 minutes away, extra food, accommodation”. Ms Roberts said having to take long periods off work added to the financial strain. “My income was dramatically reduced because it’s hard to work when your child is in hospital… and you don’t want to work, you should be able to spend time with your child when they’re poorly.” Form filling “What we’re seeing is heartbreaking,” Young People vs *******’s chief executive Rachel Kirby-Rider told the BBC. “People don’t have that disposable income, they don’t have that money in savings. “Having to wait seven months for disability benefits is driving a lot of families into debt and impacting families at a time they just want to concentrate on getting their child well.” The charity is also concerned about the application process, as the 50-page forms were “tricky, long and complex”, asking families for detailed descriptions about their child’s needs. The process should be made “simple and efficient”, it says, by using medical evidence alone to make applications. Ms Roberts said she struggled to find the “head space” to complete the application form when her daughter Jasmine was ill. “They asked so many questions and you’ve got to send added proof… you don’t want to have to think about that really as well as ‘is my child going to be OK?’. “It’s something that shouldn’t have to be done when you’re going through that traumatic time.” A Department for Work and Pensions spokesperson said: “We are committed to ensuring people can access financial support through Personal Independence Payment and Disability Living Allowance for children in a timely manner. “But we recognise waits are too high, and we have increased the number of staff to respond to the increase in claim volumes.” Source link #******* #family #financially #broken #wait #benefits Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  11. Navarro records rare ‘double-bagel’ to win Merida Open Navarro records rare ‘double-bagel’ to win Merida Open Top seed Emma Navarro has made made light work of qualifier Emiliana Arango with a crushing 6-0 6-0 victory in the final of the Merida Open as the American claimed her second career title. World No.10 Navarro, who won the WTA 250 Hobart International last year, needed just 55 minutes to lift her first WTA 500 trophy, wrapping up a dominant run at the hardcourt event in Mexico, in which she didn’t drop a set. With a strong serve and powerful groundstrokes, Navarro never allowed Arango to enjoy a break point at the Yucatan Country Club, while the US Open semi-finalist won 71 per cent of points on return. The 23-year-old became only the fifth player this century to win a WTA final with a 6-0 6-0 scoreline, and the first since Iga Swiatek’s victory over Karolina Pliskova at the 2021 Italian Open. Arango, who will reach a career-high singles world ranking of 80 on Monday, could not find her stride following a nearly three-hour three-set semi-final battle against fellow qualifier Daria Saville of Australia late on Saturday. The Colombian world No.133 reached Sunday’s decider on the back of an 11-match winning streak, including last week’s winning run at the WTA 125 Cancun Open, but had to play three sets in each of her last three matches. In Texas meantime, top seed Jessica Pegula took out the Austin Open final. Pegula was too good for fellow American McCartney Kessler, winning 7-5 6-2 in 84 minutes, 24 hours after beating Aussie Ajla Tomljanovic in the semis. It was Pegula’s 16th final and second of the year after her runner-up finish to compatriot Madison Keys at the Adelaide International in January. Pegula, who converted six break points to three, moved up three spots to ninth in the Live Race Ranking, while the 25-year-old Kessler entered the Top 50 from her run to the final. Both players will look to make a big impression at the WTA1000 Indian Wells tournament this week. With AAP. 12. Israel’s military is told to prepare to defend a Druze community outside Syria’s capital Israel’s military is told to prepare to defend a Druze community outside Syria’s capital JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s defense ministry on Saturday said the military has been instructed to prepare to defend a Druze settlement in the suburbs of Damascus, asserting that the ********* it has vowed to protect was “under attack” by Syrian forces. The statement, citing an order from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, follows an Israeli warning last weekend that the forces of neighboring Syria’s new government and the insurgent group that led last year’s ouster of former President Bashar Assad should not enter the area south of Damascus. Saturday’s statement indicates that Israeli forces could push farther into Syria as its new authorities try to consolidate control after more than a decade of civil war. Israeli forces recently set up posts in a buffer zone and on strategic Mt. Hermon nearby. There have been no major clashes between Israeli troops and Syria’s new forces. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. “We will not allow the terrorist regime of radical Islam in Syria to harm the Druze. If the regime harms the Druze, it will be harmed by us,” the statement said. There was no immediate response from Syria’s government. The Druze are a religious ********* who live in southern Syria and in Israel’s Golan Heights, where they navigate their historically Syrian identity while living under Israeli rule. Israel’s statement followed the outbreak of unrest Friday in the Druze settlement of Jaramana, when a member of the security forces entered and started shooting in the air, leading to an exchange of fire with local gunmen that left him dead. On Saturday, gunmen came from the Damascus suburb of Mleiha to Jaramana, where they clashed with Druze gunmen. That left one Druze fighter dead and nine other people wounded, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor. The Israeli warning last Sunday to Syrian forces and Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the main former rebel group, made clear that Israeli forces would stay in parts of southern Syria for an indefinite *******. “We demand the complete demilitarization of southern Syria in the provinces of Quneitra, Daraa and Sweida from the forces of the new regime,” that earlier statement said. “Likewise, we will not tolerate any threat to the Druze community in southern Syria.” After the fall of Assad in December, Israel seized the U.N.-patrolled buffer zone on Syrian territory. The zone was set up under a 1974 ceasefire agreement. Syria’s new authorities and U.N. officials have called for Israel to withdraw. Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s government has been under pressure to protect Israelis living near border areas in the north as it tries to return residents of the north to their homes. 14. Zelensky bruised but upbeat after diplomatic whirlwind Zelensky bruised but upbeat after diplomatic whirlwind Reuters “Bruised but motivated,” was how one of Volodymyr Zelensky’s entourage described how they had been feeling, as a small group of journalists crammed into what felt like an even smaller room at Stansted Airport. The British state had done its best to give the Ukrainian president “all bells and whistles” when he arrived in the *** for a summit with 18 world leaders after his dressing down by Donald Trump and JD Vance on Friday night, a government source told me. He shared an embrace with Sir Keir Starmer outside No 10, where he was greeted with spontaneously cheering crowds, and met with King Charles for tea. But it was telling that in the 90 minutes before his plane’s wheels went up as he heads back home, Zelensky wanted to go on the record to make his arguments to the world – this time speaking only in Ukrainian – to make sure he was not misunderstood. Watch: Are you aware of truce reports? Having been slammed in the White House, then feted in the ***, his mood, in public at least, was not downhearted. “If we don’t keep our spirits up, we’re letting everyone down,” he said. He made positive noises about Sir Keir and French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan to grab hold of the plans for peace before presenting them to the US, for Europe to up its game, developing its own more convincing security guarantees. Zelensky told me he would be prepared to give Donald Trump one of his demands – to sign the minerals deal that would give the US access to someone of Ukraine’s resources. Beyond that, despite all the pressure of a three-year war, under all the demands from the White House which, fairly or not, has the power to protect or abandon his country, on Sunday night Zelensky stood firm. He told us it was wrong at this stage to discuss giving up territory Russia has captured, and it was too early to be “talking about lines”, which the prime minister had mentioned earlier. He would not apologise to Trump or express regret for anything that happened in the Oval Office, which at the moment, the US president’s camp is repeatedly calling for. Even the boss of Nato called for Zelensky to find a way to reset his relationship with the US leader. Yet in the stuffy room at Stansted, there was not much in Zelensky’s tone that suggested he was interested in making nice. He said he had travelled for hours to get to the White House – his visit was a mark of respect. He also said he would never “insult anybody” and the conversation as it erupted had not been a positive for anyone. Zelensky chose his words very carefully. He tried to an extent to avoid a post-mortem of what went on. He was not rude about Trump – he barely mentioned him by name – and suggested tensions would pass. If you watched the full horror of what happened in the Oval Office you may well not blame Zelensky for feeling it’s simply not for him to say sorry. Watch: Mineral deal still “ready to sign”, Zelensky tells the BBC If you listen to him talk about what has happened to his country, you can understand why it feels so impossible at this stage for him to acknowledge compromises might have to come to end the war. Watching him in person talk about the violence and the suffering that has been unleashed, you sense his total disbelief that anyone might not see the world his way, where Russia’s aggression means Putin must not be spared punishment, and his people should be protected at all costs. But the reality? Neither Zelensky nor any Western leader so far has persuaded Trump to adopt that moral clarity on this war. And even if it’s painful, without a willingness to compromise, it’s hard to see an end to this war. Zelensky is though, a master communicator – genuine, doubtless, but also a performer by trade. “Our freedoms and values are not for *****,” a message of no surrender Zelensky wanted to communicate, along with a willingness to sign the minerals deal. He again expressed his thanks for the backing of the US and other countries. But don’t forget right now, for all of the encounters we have with the leaders involved in public, there are so many more between them and their teams behind closed doors. Just when our conversation was coming to an end, a suggestion that Macron and Sir Keir were proposing a month-long truce as part of their plan for peace reached my phone. Did President Zelensky know and would he agree such a deal, I asked. “I am aware of everything,” he joked, getting a laugh in the room, then offering handshakes and photos on his way out to the plane. He may wanted to have had the last word at the end of a dramatic and difficult weekend. But the conversation about this conflict has many weeks, if not many months to run. 15. LATIKA M BOURKE: Australia should be ready to join Europe’s Coalition of the Willing LATIKA M BOURKE: Australia should be ready to join Europe’s Coalition of the Willing Former Ambassador to Russia Peter Tesch, says Australia should be ready to support the Coalition of the Willing that the British and French are assembling to secure any peace deal in Ukraine. Mr Tesch, a veteran of Australia’s public service who most recently served as deputy secretary in the Department of Defence until 2022 and is now a visiting fellow at ANU’s Centre for European Studies, said that it was in Australia’s interests to contribute to securing Ukraine’s peace both symbolically and strategically. “There is symbolic and political value in demonstrating that democracies are not going to abandon democracies to the predations of an autocracy,” he told The Nightly in an interview by phone. “If (Russian President Vladimir) Putin gets his way then it fundamentally recasts European security, transatlantic security and regional security and it demonstrates that we are going to be dealing with a very different world of regional empires.” He said Mr Putin had brought the conflict into Australia’s neighbourhood by involving North Korean troops on the frontlines in Europe, as well as increasing Russia’s partnership with Beijing and Pyongyang during two recent visits. “Putin, by his own actions, by his connivance with North Korea, with his demonstrated intent to undermine existing global security orders means victory or defeat in Ukraine matters to our broad interests,” Mr Tesch said. “And it also matters to us because it matters to countries that matter to us.” Camera IconUkraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky, Britain’s Prime Minister Keir Starmer and France’s President Emmanuel Macron meet in London. Credit: WPA Pool/Getty Images He added that any role Australia contributed would benefit Australia’s small but highly capable military. “We could actually learn from the experience of Ukraine militarily and Europe geopolitically and geostrategically,” he said. He said any *********** role would be unlikely to involve military platforms, material or troops but would take in Australia’s other capacities. “We have a highly capable but small ADF, but we have great skills in planning and strategic analysis and great capacities in some of the areas seen repeatedly in Ukraine, for example, on drones, and we do have a convening and marshalling authority,” he said. He added that it would help recast the narrative in the region, “which all too often we leave to Beijing and Moscow”. Britain and France have begun planning a Coalition of the Willing of European and non-European countries as part of efforts to rescue the collapsed relationship between the Trump Administration and Ukraine following Friday’s Oval Office showdown when an angry US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance berated President Volodomyr Zelensky for not being grateful enough. A planned minerals agreement was not signed and Mr Zelensky was kicked out of the White House after the televised argument and told to return only when he was ready for peace. *** Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is acting as an intermediary between the two and on Sunday, convened more than a dozen European leaders as well as a handful of NATO leaders to discuss how to guarantee Ukraine’s peace after any negotiation which President Trump wants to strike, to bring the three-year war which Mr Putin began to an end. When asked if non-European countries could join the Coalition of the Willing, Sir Keir Starmer gave a one-word answer: “Yes.” Sir Keir said the time for Europe to talk was over and action was now required and that “boots on the ground” and ”planes in the air” had to be provided to guarantee any peace deal. “Not every nation will feel able to contribute,” he told reporters at Downing Street, after hosting leaders are nearby Lancaster House. Asked if he wanted to see non-European countries involved, including Canada, whose outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau attended the pow-wow, Sir Keir was emphatic. Camera IconKing Charles III hosts Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Sandringham Estate Sunday. Credit: WPA Pool/Getty Images “On the countries beyond Europe, obviously we’ve had Canada here who’ve traditionally taken a forward-leaning role,” he said. “They’ve been working very hard with us on issues like training. “And they’ve been a reliable ally, and I’m encouraging of that because they are already deeply invested on that in Ukraine — as I say, they’ve worked on the training — so, yes.” Mr Trudeau said everything was on the table. “Canada will be there and is open to doing what is necessary,” he said. Turkey and Norway, which, like Canada, are both members of NATO but not part of the European Union also attended the London summit. His response paves the way for the ***’s allies and NATO’s partner countries to consider sending troops, something Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles did not rule out on a visit to London last December and New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has already said he is open to supporting. The debate was kickstarted last year when Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told The Nightly that non-NATO partner countries could be part of missions to help keep the peace on the continent saying the involvement of North Korea had shown the interconnectedness of the Indo-Pacific’s security threats with Europe’s. Australia is part of the Indo-Pacific four nations that also includes New Zealand, Korea and Japan. The leaders have been invited to the last three NATO leaders summits because of the growing threat that China poses globally. Australia, alongside Five Eyes intelligence sharing partner Canada, has also been helping train Ukrainian troops in Britain. When asked if Australia would back troops, Mr Marles said at the annual meeting of Australia and the ***’s defence ministers in London a few days later: “We will continue to look at ways in which we can support Ukraine for as long as it takes and we work really closely with the *** in terms of what that commitment looks like.” Since then, New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has said: “We do support a lot of peacekeeping missions around the world, and this is something that we would be open to working through.” New Zealand, which is also a member of the Five Eyes, also contributes troops to the ***’s training programme, which is set to move from Britain to Ukraine. Mr Luxon was backed by New Zealand’s Labour party. However, the Coalition in Australia has been quick to scotch any troop commitment to Ukraine. The opposition’s home affairs spokesman James Paterson said, “There’s been no request for *********** troops as part of a peacekeeping force, and I think it’s premature to speculate about that,” he said. “Let’s see where we go. “But I think we also have to recognise that our own neighbourhood is a pretty tough environment, and we’ve got our own security challenges here, which are our first priority.” Europeans start to shift gear European leaders threw their arms around Zelensky in London; the Ukrainian leader met King Charles for almost an hour. The President wore ****** military attire to meet the King, the same style of clothes that provoked wrath of the Trump Administration and MAGA supporters who said the clothing that President Zelensky has adopted since his country was invaded was a sign of his disrespect. The meeting appeared to make progress on how Ukraine’s security could be guaranteed if President Trump is successful in negotiating a ceasefire. But Sir Keir stressed that anything Europe agreed, which would be taken to the Trump Administration would require the US to endorse and guarantee with their own security contributions. US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz told CNN’s State of the Union: “What type of support we provide or not is to be negotiated.” He said there would quite clearly have to be a “security guarantee” conceded by the Russians and the Ukrainians would have to cede territory and that the end of the war would have be permanent. President Trump has previously said the minerals deal that was supposed to be signed but was abandoned after the Oval Office showdown would have put United States citizens on the ground as they mined Ukraine for its resources, and this would have provided a deterrent to Russia. The European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen said the goal was to turn Ukraine into a “steel porcupine that is indigestible for potential invaders”, and that included Ukraine’s economic resilience. She said Europe needed a massive surge in its defence and that she would present European leaders with a plan for how to rearm at a meeting on Thursday. Sir Keir announced that he would use the ***’s export financing scheme to enable Ukraine to buy 5000 light-weight Starstreak surface-to-air missiles, produced in Belfast, worth £1.6 billion. He said the world was at a “crossroads in history” and that it was “time to lead.” Source link #LATIKA #BOURKE #Australia #ready #join #Europes #Coalition Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  16. Forensic expert shares opinion on ‘unusual’ circumstances Forensic expert shares opinion on ‘unusual’ circumstances Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s deaths as well as that of their dog could be the result of a tragic accident, according to forensic pathologist Dr. Michael Baden. A criminal investigation into the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa was launched Wednesday after New Mexico authorities found the 95-year-old actor, the 65-year-old classical pianist and one of their dogs dead in their Santa Fe home under circumstances deemed “suspicious.” Santa Fe Sheriff Department officials have said that there were no obvious signs of foul play and no external trauma was seen on either Hackman or Arakawa. After preliminary autopsies were completed, Santa Fe Sheriff Adan Mendoza confirmed that the couple had tested negative for carbon monoxide and the Oscar-winning actor had likely died about nine days before the bodies were discovered. Gene Hackman, Wife Found Dead At Santa Fe Estate: What To Know About The Property During an appearance on “Fox Report,” Baden explained that Hackman’s pacemaker, which the sheriff said last recorded an event on Feb. 17, could offer a key clue. “That event would have been a cardiac arrest caused by an abnormal pulse rate,” he said. “The pacemaker keeps track of the pulse, and when it gets down too low, it discharges. And that’s all in the record.” Read On The Fox News App Dr. Michael Baden shared his expert opinion on the “unusual” circumstances behind Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa’s deaths. “So the autopsy showed he didn’t have any injury,” Baden continued. “There was no carbon monoxide. And he had — the most common cause of death in this country — severe heart disease, coronary artery disease and high blood pressure perhaps, from what’s been released. So that would cause him, having cardiac arrest in the mudroom, to collapse right there.” In a search warrant affadvit released by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office and obtained by Fox News Digital, investigators stated that they had found Hackman’s body on the floor in a mud-room with a walking cane and sunglasses nearby. According to the documents, the detectives suspected that the actor may have “suddenly fallen.” Baden shared his theory that Arakawa’s death may have occurred after Hackman’s pacemaker stopped while she was trying to help her husband. The affidavit stated that Arawkawa was found on the ground in a bathroom with a space heater near her head. An orange prescription bottle was found near Hackman’s wife, according to a search warrant affidavit. It appeared to be open, with pills scattered on a countertop. Authorities listed thyroid medication, blood pressure medication and Tylenol among the items they took from the house. The couple and one of their dogs were found dead on Feb. 26. Gene Hackman’s Death Mourned By Hollywood: Antonio Banderas, Gary Sinise, Francis Ford Coppola Remember Star “His wife was found in the bathroom,” Baden said. “They haven’t released the information about her findings, except that she did not have carbon monoxide in her, and that what appears to be from the scene and from what’s been said is that she found her husband in the mudroom.” Baden explained that in an agitated state, Arakawa could have rushed to the bathroom to get Hackman’s blood pressure medication before falling to the floor while scattering the pills and taking the space heater down with her. “She may have struck her head on the way down and had some internal injury to the brain that doesn’t show up on the outside or bleeding in the inside of the brain,” Baden said. “Or that she may also, at 65, had severe heart disease and excitement can cause a trigger to the cardiac rhythm causing death under those circumstances. I think the first, that striking her head would be more common.” Baden theorized that Hackman suffered a cardiac event and Arakawa may have died while trying to get his medication. According to the affidavit, the deceased dog, a ******* Shepherd, was found “10-15 feet” away from Arakawa in a closet of the bathroom. Two other living dogs were discovered on the property. Detectives observed that “one of the healthy dogs was initially observed near the deceased female (inside the bathroom) and the other healthy dog was observed outside the residence.” “What was perplexing to me initially with the release was the death of a dog also, which I thought was free in the house,” Baden said. “And that’s why I think that the carbon monoxide[theory] was a very good thought with them breathing in the same air. But it turns out from what they say, that the dog was constrained in his cage or kennel and would have died from just dehydration and lack of water during the nine-day ******* that he couldn’t get out of the kennel.” Baden noted that his theory could explain why an emergency call wasn’t immediately made after Hackman experienced the cardiac event on Feb. 17. A maintenance worker who discovered Hackman and Arakawa’s bodies called 911 on Feb. 26. Gene Hackman And Wife’s Deaths Called ‘Suspicious,’ Bodies Showed Signs Of ‘Mummification’ “The circumstances and who he was — he was beloved by so many — are what make it so unusual,” Baden said. “Because heart disease and collapsing and dying with a pacemaker is common in the United States.” “But the circumstances of the two of them isolated by themselves,” he continued. “And that may have been the reason that 911 wasn’t called, for example, while his wife was trying to get him some medication and fell.” The couple were discovered dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Like What You’re Reading? Click Here For More Entertainment News Hackman and Arakawa were last publicly photographed together on March 28, 2024. Hackman was spotted holding onto his wife’s arm. He held onto a walking cane in his other hand. Arakawa looked out in the distance and held up her arm to support her husband. The couple were pictured outside Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Santa Fe. Hackman has lived in the area since the 1980s. While Hackman and his wife mainly lived a private life, the last event they attended together appeared to be the 2003 Golden Globes, when he was honored with the Cecil B. DeMille Award. During a Friday appearance on “Today,” Sheriff Mendoza said that the medication that was found on the property was “very important evidence at the scene.” “That information was collected . . . passed to the medical investigator to help them make a determination. . . . Yes, we’re looking at that specifically and other medications possibly in the residence. . . . That is something of concern,” he said. Click Here To Sign Up For The Entertainment Newsletter Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza is pictured speaking at a press conference regarding the deaths. When asked whether Hackman and his wife died simultaneously or whether one died before the other, the sheriff replied, “I think that’s very difficult to determine. I think it’s going to be pretty close.” Mendoza previously stated that toxicology tests were ordered for Hackman and his wife because the manner and cause of death have not been determined. While appearing on “Today,” the sheriff said the toxicology report may take up to three months for results or “possibly longer,” depending on how “busy the laboratory is.” Mendoza added his team hopes the results come “sooner rather than later.” Mendoza said he is “pretty confident there is no foul play, just based on the lack of evidence of foul play.” “But we, of course, we’re not ruling that out. . . . The autopsy results, the official results, will steer us in the right direction. That could change, obviously, and we’re not ruling that out. This is an open investigation. It’s a couple [of] days old. We’re putting together the timeline. We’re trying to figure out all the evidence. . . . The autopsy is key, and that’s going to take some time.” Fox News Digital’s Stephanie Giang-Paunon contributed to this report. 20. You can eat these 5 invasive animals to help population control, US Fish & Wildlife Service says You can eat these 5 invasive animals to help population control, US Fish & Wildlife Service says The U.s. Fish and Wildlife Service wants you to control the invasive species in your area. What is a good hunt without eating the prize? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is promoting these five invasive species to cook up on the grill. An invasive species is an introduced non-native organism that begins to spread or expand its range from an original introduction and can potentially harm the environment, economy or human health. Invasive species outcompete native wildlife, destroy habitats and mess up ecosystems. First on the list is the Nutria, an oversized wetland-loving rodent. These creatures were first brought to the U.S. via Elizabeth Lake, California, in 1899 for fur trade but began escaping over time. Their nonstop munching and burrowing destroy plants that keep marshes stable, inevitably leading to the loss of habitat for others. The meat of a Nutria is lean and mild and tastes like rabbit – a good recipe for gumbo. 17 October 2024, Schleswig-Holstein, Lübeck: 17.10.2024, Luebeck. A nutria (Myocastor coypus) stands in the Schellbruch nature reserve in Luebeck on the lower Trave on a meadow next to an embankment. The animals originate from South America and are considered an invasive species. The rodents, which were deliberately introduced and also released into the wild in the past because of their fur, are now found throughout Germany and may be hunted almost everywhere. Nutria meat is considered very tasty. Photo: Wolfram Steinberg/dpa Photo: Wolfram Steinberg/dpa (Photo by Wolfram Steinberg/picture alliance via Getty Images) Another invasive species you can eat is the Northern Snakehead, a sharp-toothed species that can live outside the water for several days. That kind of ability allows them to wiggle into other freshwater habitats. Snakeheads lie and wait at the bottom of shallow, slow-moving water before striking like a torpedo at its prey. Despite their odd appearance, these creatures offer delicious firm, white and flaky meat. They can be grilled or fried into a tasty fish taco – if you’re brave enough to try it. The Green Iguana is the third tasty invasive species on the list, as these cold-blooded creatures plunder Florida’s native plants and destabilize seawalls. These animals often burrow along or under seawalls or sidewalks, which causes them to collapse. Their meat is often referred to as the chicken of the trees for its mild flavor. You can try roasting or grilling these creatures for a tasty meal. BOYNTON BEACH, FLORIDA – JANUARY 04: An iguana populates the Green Cay Nature Center & Wetlands on January 4, 2024 in Boynton Beach, Florida, United States. The warm climate of Florida provides a welcome habitant for animals of many species. Next on the list, we have the invasive Carp, a family of fish native to Europe and Asia. Common carp have been in the U.S. for over 100 years. The four kinds of invasive carp were imported into the states for use in aquaculture ponds. An aquaculture pond is a body of water in which aquatic animals are raised for food. Through flooding andaccidental release, the ******, silver, bighead and grass carp have found their way into the Mississippi River system. This is like a giant freshwater highway for these carp to access many of the country’s rivers and streams. These surprisingly tasty fish can be grilled, blackened or turned into crispy fish cakes. Lastly, we have one of the more obvious invasive species, the feral hogs or wild boars. Tourist’s Body Found Mangled After Shark Attack During Diving Mishap Much like the invasive carp, the hogs and boars hailed from Europe and Asia. These big creatures tear up forests, farmlands and wetlands across the country. The feral animals can also transmit diseases to others on farmlands, which can result in financial loss to farmers. 24 January 2025, Brandenburg, Groß Schönebeck: Wild boars, photographed in an enclosure in the Schorfheide Wildlife Park. Surprisingly, wild boar is some of the best-tasting invasive meat you can get. They are also some of the most popular invasive species to hunt. Feral hog hunting is encouraged in many states, so you’re not just getting a good meal, you’re doing your duty as a conservationist. The animal has a leaner and richer flavor than store-bought pork. Wild boars can be cooked in everything from smoked barbecue chili to burgers, tacos and even pasta. Grind it for burger meat, braise it for tacos, or go above and beyond and create a wild boar ragu over your pasta. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service encourages you to get out there and “Save a Swamp and Sauté a Nutria” for your community.
