‘We haven’t done anything yet’: Hype building around the Broncos in 2025, but Adam Reynolds warns pundits not to get carried away
‘We haven’t done anything yet’: Hype building around the Broncos in 2025, but Adam Reynolds warns pundits not to get carried away
The Broncos have been tipped to be one the biggest risers this season, but skipper Adam Reynolds has reminded fans that his side hasn’t done anything yet even if there are high hopes that Ben Hunt’s return to the club and the arrival of Michael Maguire as coach can provide the leadership they need to be title contenders.
The Broncos endured a rough 2024 season which cost club legend Kevin Walters his job as coach, but it’s hard to see them running 12th again if their stars can buy into Maguire’s tougher approach.
The 2023 grand finalists start their season on Thursday night against the Roosters, and expectations will only grow if they can win in Sydney.

“We haven’t done anything yet,” Reynolds warned.
“Hypotheticals are all good, but if you listen to people on the outside, you end up on the outside.
“We know we’ve had a good pre-season and we’ve worked hard on it, but we just need to keep a lid on it.
“Nothing’s been done yet. We haven’t even kicked off our season yet. There’s still a lot of hard work left in front of us and we need to treat each week as importantly as the last.”
Reynolds, 34, will be joined by Hunt, 34, who is back at the Broncos after he left them in 2017 to join the Dragons.
The representative star will slot into the halves while five-eighth Ezra Mam is out suspended, with the Broncos to have a few fresh faces who impressed Maguire during the pre-season.
But all eyes will be on the veteran halves who have the potential to lead the most potent attack in the league if fullback Reece Walsh can produce his electrifying best after an up and down 2024.

“It’s great to have another leader in the team,” Reynolds said of Hunt.
“Experience plays a massive part. He knows when to pull the trigger and when not to.
“He’s got a good read on the game, he’s a super competitive person and he breeds that amongst the group as well.
“It’s important to have those types of calibre people in the team. He’s a winner and he’s shown that on the biggest stage.
“He’s going to be a handy addition who calms things down. When things don’t go perfectly out there, it’s good to have an experienced person to read the room and get us back to our processes.”

Chris Cuomo Pinpoints the Moment ‘It Was Over’ at Tense Trump vs. Zelenskyy Meeting: ‘Entirely New American Posture’
Chris Cuomo Pinpoints the Moment ‘It Was Over’ at Tense Trump vs. Zelenskyy Meeting: ‘Entirely New American Posture’
Donald Trump and JD Vance’s contentious meeting with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy represents an “entirely new American posture,” Chris Cuomo said Saturday, adding that “it was over” the moment Vance warned Zelenskyy he should be grateful to the president.
“We must all agree,” Cuomo implored viewers at the beginning of his program, “no one has ever seen anything like what we saw in the Oval Office today.”
But somehow, he added, there are “wildly different interpretations of what happened.” And despite what happened at the meeting, “I’m not sure if we know that anything has really changed.”
The “first sign” that the meeting was not going to go well was the appearance of Vance, “who’s been a ghost” since Trump in inaugurated, Cuomo said. Vance was “clearly not” at the meeting as “a friend to Ukraine Zelenskyy.”
“Now look,” he said, “trusting Putin is something without precedent of success for America. “Think about it. Has he ever been an ally on everything? Anything. As a matter of fact, he did renege on the Minsk agreements and I lived how it happened.”
Cuomo then shared his experience in Ukraine as a reporter.
“I’m telling you where I was standing in Donetsk, Ukraine at that time when they shot that plane down. There were all these Russian separatists and intel officers working for Putin. Okay?” he explained. “They even had a guy there claiming to be the leader of the province of Donetsk, which does not exist … I interviewed the guy. He went by the name Borosky, but he worked for Putin.”
Vance “is missing the history” he continued, and “was also totally out of role here to take it to Zelenskyy” as if the trio were on “some fringe podcast debating the state of the Ukraine military.”
The president and vice president were “both playing bad cop” in an “airing of grievances” that Zelenskyy identified as “an ambush” Cuomo continued.
Trump and Vance are actually angry about the fallout surrounding a 2019 phone call from Trump to Zelenskyy, Cuomo said, — an act that led to his first impeachment (Trump is still the only federal official to be impeached twice). In a phone call coordinated by Alexander Vindman, Trump attempted to leverage US military aid to Ukraine if Zelenskyy agreed to investigate President Joe Biden’s son Hunter and his role at a Ukrainian gas company. Trump was impeached for the first time on December 18, 2019.

Harm Reduction Australia flags possible ‘trust’ issues in NSW pill testing trial at Yours and Owls festival
Harm Reduction Australia flags possible ‘trust’ issues in NSW pill testing trial at Yours and Owls festival
NSW has launched its very first pill testing trial, but one key issue could be stopping festival goers from participating in the controversial health measure designed to prevent drug overdose disasters.
The NSW government trialled pill testing at the Yours and Owls festival over the weekend, but the trial appears to have delivered a much reduced sample size of tested drugs compared to similar trials in Victoria.
About 80 drug samples were tested across the two-day festival, according to NSW Health, with 103 patrons visiting the service out of the estimated 30,000 attendees.
This was compared to more than 600 samples tested at Victoria’s Beyond the Valley festival a few months ago, which had an estimated 35,000 attendees, according to media reports.
The NSW trial was run by the government, whereas trials in Victoria have been handed off to non-government entities.
Harm Reduction Australia president Gino Vumbaca told NewsWire a “trust” issue might have prevented more festival goers from engaging with the service.
“Some of the statements made by the government prior to it, just highlighting there will be sniffer dogs and police will be there, and it’s ******** to carry drugs, but come and use our pill testing service, probably didn’t help, or engender a lot of confidence,” he told NewsWire on Monday.
Camera IconOne in 10 drugs tested at Yours and Owls festival were different to what festival goers thought they’d purchased. Danielle Smith / Newswire. Credit: NCA NewsWire
“But it’s hard to know (for sure). You’d have to speak to the people there.”
He said in his experience, clients felt more comfortable interacting with NGOs than the government.
“Government agencies include the police and we’re talking about people using illicit substances,” he said.
“There’s a level of trust about government and non-government.
“We congratulate the government for introducing pill testing, it’s great.
“But there are experienced organisations who can deliver it.”
But despite the reduced numbers, the NSW trial looks to have protected some festival goers.
About one in 10 drugs tested in the trial were different to what festival goers thought they’d purchased, the government said.
Camera IconFestival goers could have small samples of substances tested by peer workers, health workers and analysts at the festival. NewsWire / Valeriu Campan Credit: News Corp Australia
Peer workers, health workers and analysts worked to test small samples of substances brought in by festival goers for purity, potency and adulterants as part of the free and anonymous service at Yours and Owls over the weekend.
NSW Health Minister Ryan Park, speaking with 2GB on Monday, said while feedback on the trial had been good, he didn’t “want to get ahead of ourselves”.
“If it’s helped one person, then to be honest it’s probably a success from my perspective,” Mr Park said.
The main drugs detected at Yours and Owls were MDMA (ecstasy), ketamine and ********.
The NSW Health data found more than one in 10 drugs tested were either not what festival goers thought they’d purchased, or the results were inconclusive.
“The Forensic and Analytical Science Service is performing confirmatory testing on all samples collected,” a NSW Health spokesman said.
However nearly 90 per cent of the drugs tested matched what patrons were expecting.
“There were drugs discarded and they were mainly discarded because they were not what the person had purchased or originally thought that they’d purchased,” Mr Park said.
Mr Park said festival goers signed a waiver to understand the testing was “not a free pass” and didn’t mean that taking the drugs was safe.
“What we’re there saying to them is ‘This is what we found, this is what the substance is these are the potential harms that we know, this is the way you can reduce that harm’,” Mr Park said.
“‘We prefer you not to take it and not to use it, but this is essentially what is in the substance that you’ve purchased’.”
No drug warnings were issued during the festival.
“No critical drug related harm events were reported to NSW Health at the Yours and Owls Festival,” a NSW Health spokesman said.
The trial was received positively by most people who used the pill testing service, according to the spokesman, with the majority of people rating the information provided and service as “very good”.
Most people also reported feeling “very confident” in being able to reduce drug related harm following the use of the service.
Camera IconNSW Health Minister Ryan Park said the trial had been a ‘real challenge’ for him. NewsWire / Simon Bullard. Credit: News Corp Australia
NSW Premier Chris Minns delivered the trial to “reduce harm and save lives”.
The decision to implement the trial was a “real challenge” for Mr Park.
“This is a challenge for me because I know the harms of illicit drug use,” Mr Park said.
“But where I got to was after speaking with parents of young people who have passed away, they said that the reality is this is what … young people are doing at times at these festivals, and they really just wanted to make it as safe as possible.”
Mr Park emphasised illicit drug use remained ********, and pill testing services would not be made available to suppliers.
However, he said he’d been advised the trial at Yours and Owls “helped patrons make safer choices by connecting them with qualified health staff who can provide information along with harm reduction advice”.
“NSW Health and NSW Police have worked closely and will continue to work closely with festival organisers and other stakeholders to ensure safe and effective implementation of the trial at future events,” Mr Park said in a statement.
“The trial will operate alongside other harm reduction and medical services at the participating festivals.
“I’m very grateful for all the staff at the Yours and Owls festival, the DanceWize peers and NSW Health staff who helped to deliver this important intervention, providing vital health advice and looking out for all the festival goers.”
The Wollongong festival, headlined by Fontaines D.C, Denzel Curry, The Kooks and the Goo Goo Dolls, welcomed the trial with open arms, with festival co-founder Ben Tillman earlier revealing he was thrilled with the government’s move.
Camera IconPolice patrol the Listen Out Music festival at Centennial Park in Sydney. Pill testing is now being trialled across NSW and Victoria. NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Credit: News Corp Australia
He said pill testing was something “we have been fighting for, for some time now”.
“While Yours and Owls maintains a zero-tolerance policy to ******** drugs, we are realists and see the abstinence-only approach as unhelpful,” Mr Tillman said.
“Pill testing is not a panacea. However, it is a proven harm-minimisation strategy that has been successfully implemented in many countries overseas for the past 20 or so years.
“Ultimately, we ask individuals to take responsibility for themselves and their decision-making to ensure they have a great time safely.
“We also encourage anyone who finds themselves or their mates in trouble to seek medical assistance immediately, there will be no judgment, you won’t get into trouble, patrons need to remember their safety and that of their mates is the most important thing.”
A mobile pill testing service is tipped to attend 10 festivals across Victoria during an 18-month trial, including Hardmission, Ultra and Pitch Music and Arts Festival, with a fixed-site service also slated to open in mid-2025.

The Skull society at WPI remains a well-guarded secret
The Skull society at WPI remains a well-guarded secret
WORCESTER — When asked, Worcester Polytechnic Institute alumnus Chris Girouard, Class of 2013, said he’d heard of stories about a secret society on campus connected to a small stone building, but that may be all they are, stories.
It’s called the Skull Tomb and as Girouard describes it, “a little building at the base of the hill near the library.”
As for the secret society, he said he sometimes “saw a bunch of hooded people near the building,” but said that sort of thing was common on campus during his time in Worcester.
The small stone building, constructed in the 1880s, was originally meant to house WPI’s electromagnetic laboratory, before the school’s newspaper moved in around the turn of the 20th century.
According to WPI, the building was used by one of its most famous alumni, Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocketry.
After graduating from WPI, Goddard worked in the school’s physics department for two years, before moving onto advanced study at Clark University. It was during this time that he continued experimenting on campus.
Plaque on the Skull Tomb at WPI.
“Legend has it that while using a lab in Salisbury, explosions caused some damage, and he was then moved to the Magnetic Lab (now Skull Tomb). Even here, neighbors complained of hearing loud noises,” the school wrote on its website.
That’s not the only legend surrounding the building, according to some, the building represents the remnants of a secret society on campus.
The society known as WPI’s Skull Senior Society, or the “skull,” was founded in 1911 and moved into the small building in 1921, which gave the building its current name of Skull Tomb.
The society is just one of the school’s nearly 200 organizations, including a men’s glee club, a theater group and more than a dozen fraternities and sororities.
According to WPI, juniors are nominated to become members of the society, composed of students, faculty, alumni and staff.
According to a document from WPI dated Nov. 15, 1998, there are three main goals of the Skull Senior Honor Society. First, members are tasked with preserving the history and traditions of WPI, “by way of reenacting certain events that have occurred throughout the school’s history.” Second, members should act as “a sounding board for student ideas and concerns.” And last but not least, members should aim to bring together different groups on campus to support the unified mission of WPI.
However, when asked, the school said it did not have anyone who could speak about the society.
The online community wasn’t helpful either, with simple responses like “it’s a secret.”
While the society no longer uses the stone building, it remains a reminder for students.
Maya, a junior, who did not wish to give her last name, was out in front of the school working on a project with classmates. She explained she was testing out a hypothesis regarding an ancient dodecahedron as a surveying device. As for the secret society, it’s no secret, she said.
“During freshman orientation we do a bridge crossing,” she said. “Then when you graduate, you cross back over the bridge. I remember seeing some of the Skull wearing cloaks as they cross back over the bridge.”
Pointing to the small stone building, Maya said she’s never seen anyone go in or out. It’s clear it remains locked and boarded up.
“The way people talk about them (the Skull society), they’ve got to exist,” she said with a laugh. “Or they at least want to you think they exist.”
The Museum of Worcester had a similar response, and admitted it has nothing within its archives except speculation.
In a WPI subreddit with more than 9,000 members, there are several discussions spanning decades regarding the secret society and the small stone building, the legends and other rumors on campus. Some believe there is a small hatch within the Skull Tomb that leads to a tunnel system under the campus and ultimately into the “Worcester Catacombs.”
When it comes to getting into the society, there are several stories about stealing a bronze goat sculpture to increase the likelihood of membership, and even the existence of other secret societies at WPI: Gilded *****, ****** Gavels, and Phoenix.
“You’ll be expelled if you’re caught in the steam tunnels that don’t exist,” one redditor wrote.
“If you step on the seal in the quad, it’ll take you more than four years to graduate,” another joked.
As for the quad itself, the Centennial Walkway decorates the school’s campus floor with bricks dedicated to those who have left their mark on the school. Many of the bricks identify members of the Skull society with pride, proof the society is alive, well and excellent at keeping secrets.
T&G engagement editor Sarah Barnacle is getting to know Central Mass. by exploring some of the best places to go and things to do in Worcester County. If you have an idea or suggestion, please email *****@*****.tld.

One month until racetrack housing plan run and done
One month until racetrack housing plan run and done
The chance to turn a historic racecourse into a “mini city” served by a high-frequency metro is a one-off opportunity that could end within weeks in a crucial vote, a state premier says.
The future of the 140-year-old Rosehill Gardens racecourse has been the subject of fierce debate since the NSW government reached a 2023 agreement with owner the *********** Turf Club to potentially redevelop the western Sydney site.
Under the plan, the land would be sold to developers to build more than 25,000 homes, with the proceeds – potentially worth up to $5 billion – funnelled into other racing, training and stabling venues.
But it has faced an uprising among some turf club members, who have opposed the ***** with the backing of high-profile trainers like Gai Waterhouse and Chris Waller.
The proposal is due to go to a vote on April 3 and NSW Premier Chris Minns on Monday said the plan for much-needed housing would not go ahead if the club opted against it.
“We’re not going to, in a compulsory way, take Rosehill off its members,” he told reporters.
“We’ll be disappointed, but we’ve got to get on with it.”
While providing an update on tunnelling for the Sydney Metro West, a 24km underground line between Parramatta and the city centre, Mr Minns added the window was about to close for adding another stop to cater to the Rosehill housing plan.
“This line and the potential for a (station) box at Rosehill is really only going to come about one time and the decision is going to be made in the next month,” the premier said.
Nine stops are already planned for the metro line, which is due to open in 2032, but Rosehill is currently excluded from those plans.
In addition to internal opposition, the potential redevelopment hit a stumbling block in late 2024 over claims Mr Minns failed to reveal a conflict of interest flowing from his long-time friendship with turf club official Steve McMahon.
The claims were raised by a Liberal-led committee following a parliamentary probe into the Rosehill proposal, which heard from Mr Waller – the Rosehill-based trainer of champion mare Winx – as well as a prominent backer in Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys.
In December, an Independent Commission Against Corruption assessment panel, including the watchdog’s three commissioners and senior staff, found no evidence of wrongdoing by the premier.
The turf club declined to comment.

The complete data protection system for your business
The complete data protection system for your business
Synology’s multifaceted NAS is legendary in the business and prosumer spaces, but many organisations just need the very best backup features without any distractions or complications. Synology has responded with an entirely new, purpose built backup appliance called ActiveProtect which manages, optimises and protects everything including Databases, Physical and virtual machines and SaaS that are potentially spread across fragmented, multisite and multi-vendor environments. It even handles backups of backups (with powerful deduplication) in one, centrally managed, dedicated solution. Here’s what you need to know.
Data protection is the top priority
The combination of cyberattacks and AI poses a greater threat to our data – and subsequently our organisations – than ever before. Backups remain a core solution but it’s important to evolve your strategy from Disaster Recovery into one of Cyber Recovery. What does that mean?
Early backups fundamentally mitigated system crashes. Then they moved to protect against (non-malicious) disasters where backups were not the target and the data impacted was usually at a local (or regional) level. Now, however, increasingly complex and sophisticated, AI-fuelled cyberattacks mean the scope has changed: attacks are now commonly maliciously targeted towards an organisation’s data (including backup and recovery systems) in a way that compromises restoration. The new paradigm has evolved from causing ‘simple’ service unavailability to comprehensively affecting the data integrity, confidentiality and reputation of an entire enterprise and supply chain.
It’s essential to know the common blind spots associated with cyber recovery. After all, many organisations don’t just have fragmented hardware environments, they utilise multiple data storage, application and software vendors which, themselves, have multiple rules and requirements (like being locked into AWS S3, for example). Coordinating an overarching backup strategy across multiple vendors is impractical for many organisations. Managing the management of such a backup environment, across multiple sysadmins and power users, is another problem altogether.
A complete solution
ActiveProtect is a purpose-built backup appliance that provides simplicity in evaluating the ideal setup – you only need to know the size of the data being backed-up. Synology has calculated all hardware requirements for you.
ActiveProtect is a centralised backup solution which backs-up all of your endpoints, including PCs and Macs, physical servers, virtual machines and cloud applications across all of your business’ infrastructure across multiple sites. It facilitates the management of all data across those sites, including backup servers, remote storage and hypervisors. Plus, it helps you set-up bespoke protection plans and archiving for all of it. Client-side encryption is provided to protect backup copies before they are stored. WORM storage enables you to store backup copies in remote storage with retention periods set to prevent deletion or modification during the data retention *******.
There are also granular user delegation controls to lock access to (high visibility) Monitoring, Restoration, Backup and System Management (with cluster architecture oversight) which have been designed with security as a priority. This means access controls come with options for MFA, SSO and 2FA sign-ins and all user activities and changes are logged. The initial set-up can take just 10 minutes.
ActiveProtect will also manage your firewall settings and create automatic rules, isolating backups and limiting access to specific ports and IPs.
Ironclad backup, quick restore
Immutable backups can be isolated across multiple storage devices including air-gapped storage with (flexible) time locks to ensure nobody can access them out of scheduled hours or until it’s safe to do so.
Automatic protection is provided for virtual machines based on host/cluster/folder organisation where the VM resides; cloud service policies are automatically assigned based upon the group to which the account belongs; and physical devices get backed-up using Connect Keys that are set-up during deployment.
ActiveProtect’s Fast Backups system enables Snapshots with Fast Block Tracking and Time-Consistent Point-in-Time management. It automatically checks for backup integrity, adds backup verification and even plans for recovery drills! This all facilitates instant restoration to production sites.
Other benefits include data deduplication, self-healing storage pool backups that use hot spares and self-configuring (new) hard drives; sandbox environments; and other multiple, diverse restoration capabilities.
Monitor your backup infrastructure with a single plan
Management is simplified with a single plan required for even the most fragmented of multisite organisations. Everything is scalable across multiple platforms including Synology C2, AWS S2, Synology NAS and new ActiveProtect appliances.
The latter includes hardware that ranges from the minuscule dual-bay, DP320 and larger DP340, four-bay boxes to the high-density, rack-mounted DP7400 units that can maintain up to 83.5TB each. The DP7400 is built as the main backup server, while DP340 and DP320 are designed for edge backups, differentiated by the size of the backup source.
With ActiveProtect it’s possible to create and manage custom protection plans, view up to 150,000 workloads and perform backups and retrieve data from an offsite location on one platform. You can monitor up to 2,500 sites and view your entire backup infrastructure – including primary backups, backup copies, tiered, and archived data – no matter where your data is located.
Act now before disaster strikes
With so many breaches occurring every week worldwide – whether caused by an organisation’s own failure or that of a third-party partner/contractor – and with mainstream media outlets regularly featuring them (and any other significant failures) on the evening news, data integrity and disaster recovery must no longer be the primary consideration of businesses.
The bad guys and their AI-fuelled, automated toolkits will do their best to cause as much damage to your organisation as possible, whether it’s for profit, malice, political reasons, or a combination of all three. As such, you need a holistic approach to backup that prepares for the worst but isn’t overly complex to implement and manage. That’s why, whatever size organisation you’re part of, you need to investigate Synology ActiveProtect right now.

If You Regularly Walk Around Your Home Barefoot, Doctors Have Something They Want To Say To You
If You Regularly Walk Around Your Home Barefoot, Doctors Have Something They Want To Say To You
When you walk in the door and kick off your shoes, does it actually hurt the health of your feet to walk around barefoot on hard floors? It’s not the most comfortable feeling, but doctors say there can be some benefits — with a few caveats.
Bare feet walking on a wooden floor towards a window, softly lit by natural light, creating a peaceful atmosphere
First, let’s start with a definition of barefoot: According to the Cambridge Dictionary — and experts ranging from podiatrists to dermatologists — walking barefoot means having no shoes or socks on.
“Barefoot is skin to ground,” explained licensed clinical podiatrist Dr. Robert Conenello. “Anything else is considered to be shod, as even socks alter the mechanics of movement.”
There are benefits to going barefoot at home.
Person walking barefoot on a wooden floor in a bright, minimalist room with a chair and part of a sofa visible
“I’m a big advocate for going barefoot at home,” Conenello said. “[The practice] increases intrinsic muscular strength within the feet.”
He explained that the primary benefit of walking barefoot is the reinforcement of the muscles in the feet, which tend to weaken “as we age and wear shoes.” These muscles are closely linked to our overall mobility, so their deterioration can contribute to reduced movement as we get older.
“Many of the pathologies that I see in my practice are due to the inability to engage these muscles for normal movements and metabolic efficiency,” Conenello added.
Dr. Hannah Kopelman, who has a focus in dermatology, agreed with that overall assessment, and also mentioned that going barefoot at home can have some unexpected benefits for the skin on your feet.
“Walking barefoot at home … allows your skin to breathe, which can help prevent moisture buildup and reduce the risk of fungal infections like athlete’s foot,” she explained.
Although not directly related to dermatology, walking barefoot at home can also offer a secondary skin-related advantage, one connected to sensory stimulation and overall wellness.
“Feeling the texture of different surfaces underfoot can be grounding and relaxing, almost like a mini reflexology session,” Kopelman said. “For those without underlying skin or foot conditions, this can be a natural way to connect with your environment and promote mindfulness.”
To put it concisely, opting to go shoeless and sockless in your clean home helps fortify your feet, providing long-term rewards while also reducing the risk of skin conditions. Additionally, it offers a kind of natural massage, which can be surprisingly relaxing.
But there are some potential downsides.

One potential downside of walking barefoot indoors is the increased exposure to irritants or allergens on the floor, such as dust, **** dander or cleaning chemicals, as Kopelman pointed out. For individuals with sensitive skin or chronic conditions like contact dermatitis or eczema, this could be a significant concern.
While Conenello acknowledges similar risks — such as stepping on pathogens like fungi in moist environments — he is quick to emphasize that “proper hygiene can help mitigate these risks.”
“Wash your feet frequently, dry them thoroughly and moisturize,” he advised.
Other painful risks associated with going barefoot include the potential for slipping on slick or wet surfaces, or stepping on something hard and sharp that could cause injury. As anyone who has ever stubbed a toe or accidentally stepped on a Lego can attest, such incidents can be excruciating. Kopelman points out that individuals with diabetes or poor circulation are more vulnerable to severe consequences, as “even a minor foot injury can lead to serious health issues.”
Kopelman also noted that, while walking barefoot can help strengthen muscles, the repeated practice of doing so on hard surfaces could potentially lead to foot fatigue or plantar fasciitis, a condition where the tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes becomes inflamed.
“Over time, the lack of cushioning can put stress on the joints, especially in those who already have foot or joint issues,” she explained.
There are times when you should wear shoes or socks.
Person wearing jeans stepping out of a brown ankle boot with one foot, while wearing a white sock, in a hallway
Though Conenello is generally a proponent of going barefoot, he advises wearing foot support when engaging in tasks that involve standing for extended periods of time — like when cooking.
“When standing for long periods barefoot, there can be excessive load to one area of the foot,” he said. “Even my professional cooks usually benefit from a shoe that allows them to balance weight over their entire foot.”
To illustrate the concept further, he made an analogy. “[Let’s say] that you developed some decent core strength through performing some planks,” he said. “I would not suggest you start adding significant time or weight to your exercise routine prematurely.”
There is, of course, a middle ground: socks.
According to Conenello, “there is nothing wrong with wearing socks.” They’ll simply decrease the benefits associated with being barefoot. “There is now a filter between the ground and the foot,” he said.
Kopelman added that socks can offer “minimal protection from minor abrasions or allergens while still allowing your feet to feel relatively free.” Direct contact with surfaces that may harbor bacteria or irritants is also minimized when wearing socks.
Taking all the pros and cons into account, walking barefoot at home — especially on clean and well-maintained floors — is not only safe, but generally healthy … unless you’re dealing with some sort of skin condition (think psoriasis, eczema or athlete’s foot, for example) that could be exacerbated by the presence of bacteria.
“Likewise, individuals with diabetes, neuropathy or poor circulation should avoid barefoot walking due to the increased risk of unnoticed injuries or infections,” Kopelman said.
Going barefoot selectively seems to be the best option. Moderation is, indeed, key.

American West firms up top-grade economics for ********* copper project
American West firms up top-grade economics for ********* copper project
American West Metals’ preliminary economic assessment has knocked out a whopping US$839 million (A$1.33 billion) revenue number for a 10-year mine with a net cashflow after tax of US$191 million (A$305m) at its flagship Storm Copper project in Nunavut in Canada.
The company’s development plans include an initial mining operation to target a resource of 10.3 million tonnes at an average grade of 1.3 per cent copper and 3.7 grams per tonne (g/t) silver.
The mine is forecast to produce almost 487,000t of high-quality copper concentrate at its back end, running at a grade of 17.1 per cent copper and 49g/t silver.
American West says the study has firmed up the economics of going down the lower-cost direct shipping ore (DSO) route for processing the Storm project, making it potentially one of the lowest cost producers out there.
The decision to pursue a DSO solution has come about because the near-surface, high-grade copper mineralisation is easy to process using simple ore sorters and pressure jigs.
DSO eliminates the need for a traditional flotation plant and tailings facility, reducing the project’s environmental impact and its capital costs.
Assuming a C1 cash cost of US$2.63 (A$4.20) per pound (lb), the study concluded the post-profit net present value of the project would be US$149m (A$240m) using a conservative 8 per cent discount rate.
As proof of its economic efficiency and profitability, the study has pinned down an impressively low initial capital expenditure of US$47.4m (A$76m), suggesting the project may be able to pay for itself within three years.
American West is exploring financing options, including off-take agreements and debt solutions, which could dramatically increase investor returns. A fully debt-financed scenario would push the project’s pre-tax internal rate of return to an impressive 135 per cent and an even quicker payback of less than one year.
An additional recent $18.8m funding deal – in exchange for offtake – with New York-based Taurus Funds Management has further strengthened American West’s financial position.
The initial economic study is an enormous milestone for the Storm Copper project. It is exciting to announce a low capital cost pathway to mine development with significant upside to expand the production profile and mine life as our continuing exploration identifies further copper resources.
The project sits in good company on Somerset Island in Nunavut and is close to some major base metal deposits, such as the long-running Polaris mine, which has 22mt running at 14.1 per cent zinc and 4 per cent lead.
Nanisivik, another closed mine, hosted an 18mt resource grading 9 per cent zinc and 0.7 per cent lead.
Both mines ran for more than 20 years.
American West is now building on a highly successful 23,000-metre drilling program in 2024, which unearthed several new high-grade copper discoveries. The company has set its sights on growing its inventory.
A strong electromagnetic anomaly, dubbed the Gap, was among the standout targets picked up last year and returned an impressive 20m at 2.3 per cent copper from just 28m depth.
The Cyclone Deeps prospect has hinted at a possible continuation of the already substantial main Cyclone deposit at depth, with drill intercepts such as 10m at 1.2 per cent copper from 311m.
The Squall prospect has also proved its promise, with drilling intersecting 1.5m at 2.36 per cent copper from 181.4m and ending in mineralisation.
Not to be left out of the excitement, the company’s Hailstorm prospect, within a broad 3 square kilometre geochemical soil anomaly, delivered a remarkable set of results, with surface chalcocite boulders assaying more than 50 per cent copper.
Encouraged by these results, American West will start a follow-up exploration program as soon as possible, aiming to unlock additional potential across its 110km-long project leases.
Management says there is very strong potential to quickly add tonnes to the existing mineral resource estimate.
The company saved almost $4 million in logistical costs by pre-positioning bulk supplies at site prior to the winter freeze, enabling it to make a cost-effective start to the 2025 field season.
American West can now start the paperwork for mining permit applications – with its preliminary economic assessment now in the bag – paving the way for feasibility studies and eventual production.
On the back of a strong financial case, low capital requirements and significant exploration upside, the Storm Copper project looks to be shaping up as one of the most attractive copper development opportunities in North America.
And with a new exploration drilling program just over the horizon, the American West appears extremely confident of increasing its resource base, coinciding nicely with a surging demand for the red metal from the green transition sector.

Why Greeks Fly Kites on Clean Monday
Why Greeks Fly Kites on Clean Monday
Tradition dictates that Athenians go to Filopapou Hill to fly kites on Clean Monday. Credit:Huhu Uet/Wikimedia Commons/CC BY 3.0
Kathara Deftera, or “Clean Monday”—the beginning of Lent among Orthodox Christians—is the day Greeks fly kites (which are symbolic of the Resurrection) and go on picnics outdoors. The holiday is also the unofficial start of spring for Greeks.
Young people and adults organize excursions to open areas all across the country so as to fill the skies with their kites.
Tradition dictates that Athenians go to Filopappou Hill to fly kites on Clean Monday. The hill near the Acropolis is usually shoulder-to-shoulder with kids and their families mostly attempting to fly a kite despite the crowds. The atmosphere is always fun and festive despite the sobriety of Lent.
How to make a kite for Clean Monday
Many traditional workshops have devoted themselves to the making of Clean Monday kites for over seventy years now. Although traditional wooden kites have sometimes been replaced by plastic ones, the kite-making handcraft still has its own secrets.
A light wooden frame on a paper body, cords on the balances and a single cord on the tail make the perfect traditional kite, ready to carry children and grown-ups off their feet if the wind is strong enough.
Making a traditional homemade kite is not easy. It requires patience and time to make it right. But what a great feeling it is to get outside after a long winter and fly a kit on Clean Monday! Here is how you do it:
According to some scholars, the custom of kite flying arrived in Greece from the East. Others claim that its origin in the Mediterranean is traced back to the experiments of ancient Greek mathematician Archytas (428-347 BC).
Kathara Deftera and Lent
“Kathara Deftera,” Greek for “Clean Monday,” is considered one of the most important annual feasts in Greece, commencing the ******* of Great Lent known as Sarakosti in the Greek Orthodox Church, which, despite its name meaning forty, usually lasts closer to 50 days.
The feast begins on the first day of the 7th week before the Greek Orthodox Easter Sunday.
Liturgically, however, Clean Monday—and thus Lent itself—begins on the preceding Sunday night at a special service in which all present bow down before one another and ask for forgiveness.
In this way, the faithful begin the Great Lent with a clean conscience, forgiveness, and renewed Christian love. The day of Clean Monday is sometimes called “Ash Monday” by analogy to Ash Wednesday, the day on which Lent begins in Western Christianity.
Clean Monday also puts an end to the riotous Carnival celebrations that preceded it, inviting all Orthodox Christians to leave behind the sinful attitudes associated with Carnival festivities—and non-fasting foods, which were largely consumed during the three weeks of the Carnival.
As a result, the feast, which is a public holiday in Greece and Cyprus, is celebrated with outdoor excursions, the consumption of shellfish and other fasting foods, as well as the widespread custom of building and flying kites.

Beloved L.A. staple Original Pantry Cafe closes after 100 years
Beloved L.A. staple Original Pantry Cafe closes after 100 years
Beloved in the city for a century, Los Angeles staple Original Pantry Cafe is closing its doors for good, despite efforts to save it.
Loyal customers waited for hours on Sunday to eat one more time at the iconic diner, located on the corner of Figueroa Street and James Wood Boulevard in downtown L.A.
“We’re hoping we’re not going to have to say goodbye,” one customer shared with KTLA’s Angeli Kakade. “I think you really don’t, it stays in your heart forever.”
The restaurant was owned by former L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan, and it was placed in a trust after his death in 2023.
While news of the trust selling the pantry has been ongoing for months, Unite Here! Local 11 – representing restaurant employees – was trying to negotiate a contract with the trust to help workers keep their jobs even if the restaurant sells.
Demonstrations took place this week to keep the pantry open – without success.
Riordan’s daughter sent KTLA a statement saying, “As with most Angelinos, our family saw the Pantry as our home away from home. Our hearts go out to all those involved in the Pantry as it moves on to its next chapter.”
This sentiment was shared by hundreds who showed up to bid farewell.
The union told KTLA that as of Sunday, the trust wouldn’t say if they had a buyer lined up or not, but representatives said the fight isn’t over.

Bubble tea chain that’s ******* than Starbucks sees shares jump on debut
Bubble tea chain that’s ******* than Starbucks sees shares jump on debut
Mixue’s popularity comes as many people in China are grappling with the country’s economic challenges [Getty Images]
Mixue Ice Cream and Tea may be unfamiliar to many of us but the ******** firm has more outlets than McDonald’s and Starbucks.
On Monday, the bubble tea chain’s shares jumped by more than 40% as they started trading on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
The company raised $444m (£352m) in the financial hub’s biggest initial public offering (IPO) of the year.
Mixue’s popularity comes as many people in China are grappling with the country’s economic challenges – including a property crisis, and weak consumer and business confidence. It sells ice creams and drinks for an average of six ******** yuan ($0.82; £0.65).
The company was founded in 1997 by Zhang Hongchao, a student at Henan University of Finance and Economics, as a part time job to help his family’s finances.
Its full name Mìxuě Bīngchéng means “honey snow ice city”, with its stores adorned with its Snow King mascot and playing the firm’s official theme tune on a loop.
According to Mixue, it has more than 45,000 stores across China and 11 other countries, including Singapore and Thailand. The firm has also said it plans to continue expanding.
That compares to “over 43,000 locations” for McDonald’s and Starbucks’ 40,576 outlets.
While it is often seen as China’s biggest bubble tea, iced drinks, and ice cream chain, it operates more like a raw-materials supplier than a traditional brand.
Unlike Starbucks, which operates more than half of its stores directly, almost all of Mixue’s outlets are run by franchisees.
Mixue’s strong market debut contrasts with its smaller rival Guming, which saw its share slide on its first day of trading in February.
Last year, shares in the owner of bubble tea chain Chabaidao also fell on their market debut.

*********** whose blood saved 2.4 million babies dies
*********** whose blood saved 2.4 million babies dies

One of the world’s most prolific blood donors – whose plasma saved the lives of more than 2 million babies – has died.
James Harrison died in his sleep at a nursing home in New South Wales, Australia on 17 February, his family said on Monday. He was 88.
Known in Australia as the man with the golden arm, Harrison’s blood contained a rare antibody, Anti-D, which is used to make medication given to pregnant mothers whose blood is at risk of attacking their unborn babies.
The *********** Red Cross Blood Service who paid tribute to Harrison, said he had pledged to become a donor after receiving transfusions while undergoing a major chest surgery when he was 14.
He started donating his blood plasma when he was 18 and continued doing so every two weeks until he was 81.
In 2005, he had the world record for most blood plasma donated – a title he held until 2022 when he was overtaken by a man in the US.
Harrison’s daughter, Tracey Mellowship, said her father was “very proud to have saved so many lives, without any cost or pain”.
“He always said it does not hurt, and the life you save could be your own,” she said.
Mellowship and two of Harrison’s grandchildren are also recipients of anti-D immunisations.
“It made [James] happy to hear about the many families like ours, who existed because of his kindness,” she said.
Anti-D jabs protect unborn babies from a deadly blood disorder called haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn, or HDFN.
The condition occurs at pregnancy when the mother’s red blood cells are incompatible with that of their growing baby.
The mother’s immune system then sees the baby’s blood cells as a threat and produces antibodies to attack them. This can seriously harm the baby, causing severe anaemia, heart failure, or even death.
Getty Images
Harrison at his 537th blood donation in December 1992
Before anti-D interventions were developed in the mid-1960s, one in two babies diagnosed with HDFN died.
It is unclear how Harrison’s blood came to be so rich in anti-D, but some reports said it had to do with the massive blood transfusion he received at 14.
There are fewer than 200 anti-D donors in Australia, but they help an estimated 45,000 mothers and their babies every year, according to the *********** Red Cross Blood Service, also known as Lifeblood.
Lifeblood has been working with Australia’s Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research to grow anti-D antibodies in the lab by replicating blood and immune cells from Harrison and other donors.
Researchers involved hope lab-made anti-D can one day be used to help pregnant women worldwide.
“Creating a new therapy has long been a ‘holy grail’,” Lifeblood’s research director David Irving said.
He noted the scarcity of donors committed to regular donation, who are able to produce antibodies in sufficient quality and quantity.

Microsoft to Shut Down Skype in May Following Emergence of Microsoft Teams
Microsoft to Shut Down Skype in May Following Emergence of Microsoft Teams
Microsoft has announced that it is shutting down Skype — its legacy video-conferencing platform — starting May 5, 2025. Debuted in 2003, it was known for its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)-based video telephony, video-conferencing and voice calling capabilities which led to its acquisition by the Redmond-based technology company in 2011. Although Microsoft in 2023 revealed that the platform still had 36 million users, its market share has decreased over time, with Microsoft’s own Teams app offering similar core features in addition to more functionality.
Skype Shutdown
As per Microsoft, it aims to streamline its free consumer communications offerings by making Teams the “modern communications and collaboration hub.” Aside from its one-on-one calls and group calls, messaging, and file sharing features, it offers more extensive functionality over Skype, including the ability to host meetings, manage calendars, and build and join communities for free. Microsoft reports that its video conferencing platform has grown nearly fourfold in the past two years, a surge initially driven by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 as users sought to stay connected for work, school, and personal use.
Skype Credit, subscriptions, and other paid features will no longer be offered to users, the tech giant says. Current Skype subscription users can continue to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal *******, while Skype Credits can be used till exhaustion. Starting May 5, Skype Dial Pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams.
With Skype’s planned phasing out, Microsoft says they will be able to login to the free version of Teams using their existing Skype credentials on any supported device. Chats as well as contacts will automatically be migrated to the new platform. To move from Skype to Microsoft Teams, users need to:
Download Teams on their device from the official Microsoft Teams website.
Log in with Skype credentials.
Start using Teams with all the Skype chats and contacts available from the offset.
Further, the tech giant is making sure users do not lose their connectivity during this transition ******* by allowing cross-platform calling. Microsoft Teams users will be able to call those with Skype accounts and vice versa.
