  2. ‘New ********’ didn’t want to turn the page on Pancho Villa’s raid of Columbus ‘New ********’ didn’t want to turn the page on Pancho Villa’s raid of Columbus The March 9, 1916, edition of The New ******** bore news of the first foreign invasion of U.S. soil since the War of 1812. “VILLA INVADES THE U.S.” the headline blared. “Bandits burn and kill in Columbus,” read the sub-headline below it. One of the wire service stories below is headlined “‘Death to Americans’ Pancho’s cry; wants to choke hated gringo.” Another article, also from an unspecified wire service, tells quite the story: “American torn from wife’s arms, shot like a dog and roasted.” “American Citizens on American Soil Enticed From Home by Blood-Mad Torch-Squad of ******** Brutes and Shot Down; Murderers Laugh at Woman’s Frantic Appeals for Mercy; Bandits Go Through Hotel Firing Into Rooms at Defenseless Occupants,” the headline below it elaborates. Earlier that day, around 2:30 a.m., about 485 ******** revolutionary troops under the command of Francisco “Pancho” Villa crossed the border into the United States, as Friedrich Katz describes in his 1998 book The Life and Times of Pancho Villa. Though it’s not known if Villa crossed the border himself, he gave his troops coordinated, strategic instructions beforehand. One group would attack the border town of Columbus, just north of Puerto Palomas, Mexico, from the north while another would attack from the southwest. By around 4 a.m., troops were in position and started to move in. Map A display at the Pancho Villa State Park Visitors Center in Columbus showing Villa’s 1916 attack on the city. Fred Griffin, a U.S. Army sentry, was reportedly the first to be shot dead by the Villistas — his death alerting the rest of the town. Villa’s stealthy coordination of the attack had gone out the window. The quiet town had heard the shots, and the organized military operation turned to chaos. While some Villistas focused the attack on the town’s barracks and military presence, others looted buildings and set them ablaze. As legend goes, the town’s clock tower was struck in the early minutes of the raid, freezing the clock at 4:11 a.m. forever — a snapshot of the attack, now on display in Santa Fe’s New Mexico History Museum. Around 5:30 a.m., a Villista bugler sounded the order for retreat, and the revolutionary troops fled south to the border, many riding U.S. cavalry horses they had stolen during the raid. When the dust settled, 17 Americans lay dead in the streets, including 10 civilians. Villa’s men took more casualties than the Americans, amounting to at least 70 dead, and at least seven captured, six of whom were later hanged, as reported by The New ********. U.S. troops followed in pursuit of Villa’s about 15 miles into Mexico, failing to capture Villa but killing a few retreating attackers. That incursion into Mexico would kick off an 11-month “Punitive Expedition,” led by Brig. Gen. John “****** Jack” Pershing, which led around 100,000 troops into Mexico in a failed effort to apprehend Villa. Plane A model plane at the Pancho Villa State Park Visitors Center in Columbus similar to the ones that would have been used during Brig. Gen. John “****** Jack” Pershing’s unsuccessful “Punitive Expedition” seeking to capture Villa. The expedition marked the first use of motorized vehicles and aircrafts for U.S. Army operations. There was an upside to the expedition for the U.S., though — it marked the first use of motorized vehicles and aircrafts for U.S. Army operations. While the planes had no guns or bombs, they proved to be valuable scouts for the U.S., and pilots earned expertise in military aircraft which would prove useful in the soon-to-follow World War I. ‘New ********’ calls for blood “ENOUGH,” reads the headline of a New ******** article printed March 10, the day after the raid. The article goes on to claim the attack as proof the U.S.-supported ******** President, Venustiano Carranza, “is unable to restore or maintain order in Mexico,” and to express an ode of support to the U.S. troops entering Mexico in pursuit of the raiders. “This newspaper believes we have had enough of mere ‘punish-after the fact,’ what we want is punishment that will mean prevention.” The New ******** goes on to write the only “adequate measure” to prevent Villista violence would be “nothing short of the death of Villa and every one of his followers involved in the raid,” adding “they should be shot down with no more consideration [than] that given a ***** monster or a rattlesnake.” The article also misreports the number of Villista raiders as being “a thousand bandits,” with the real number likely less than half that. Newspaper The March 9, 1916, edition of The New ********, with news of Pancho Villa’s attack on Columbus. On June 30 of that same year, The New ******** reported the hanging of four Villistas in Deming for taking part in the Columbus raid, and the earlier hanging June 9 of two other men. One man, Jose Rodriguez, was granted a stay of execution and sentenced to life in prison. “This completes the disposition of the cases of the Columbus raiders,” The New ******** wrote. Why attack Columbus? Why Villa ordered his troops to attack Columbus is still a point of debate for historians. “We’re still trying to unfold those layers of history about him and trying to figure out what is myth and what is legend,” said State Historian Robert Martinez. One theory is that the raid aimed to kill one man — Sam Ravel, a merchant who supposedly absconded with money Villa gave him to buy weapons. At the time of the raid, Ravel was 80 miles away in El Paso for a doctor’s appointment. Others center Villa’s desire for revenge against the United States. Trail Dust: Questions remain about Villa’s raid on Columbus Pancho Villa rides at the head of his rebel army in Mexico in 1916. American soldiers pursued Villa into Mexico after the raid on Columbus, N.M., but he eluded capture. He was assassinated by political enemies in Mexico in 1923. In 1915, he was infuriated at America’s recognition of Carranza as legitimate president and humiliated by his army’s defeat at the Battle of Celaya by Carranza. He suspected Carranza was aided by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, who was rumored to have let Villa’s foes use U.S. railroads to transport their troops. On Jan. 9, 1916, 17 Americans aboard a Mexico North-Western Railway train were pulled off by Villa’s forces, lined up and shot one by one. One Texan reportedly feigned death, returned to El Paso, and enraged the population with news of the attack. On March 5, 1916, at least 20 ******** prisoners were burned alive in El Paso after they were soaked in kerosene to delouse them and someone lit a match, by accident or not, resulting in the death by fire of all the men. Just four days later, Villa sent his men to burn and raid Columbus. Martinez pushed back on the idea that revenge was in Villa’s mind alone. He argued instead the raid was one “defining moment” of ********-American tensions, which had been building for “at least 60 years,” he said, starting with the ********-American War, which ended in Mexico losing more than half of its territory including New Mexico. “Pancho Villa violated that border. But the Americans had violated that border before — and were violating it economically and politically during the revolution, which contributed to the tensions.” Tensions were also deeply felt by the agrarian peasant ******** revolutionaries, who were displeased with both ******** authorities and American interference with Mexico, Martinez said. “ People like Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata — they’re at the right place at the right time, but it’s not enough for there to be tension amongst the people. They have to be strong, charismatic leaders,” he said, equating their “folk hero” status to figures like Daniel Boone, and Paul Bunyan. “People like Pancho’s army — they just didn’t wake up one day and say, ‘We have nothing else to do today. Let’s raid into a little New Mexico town.’ There are reasons. It’s just a little cloudy as to what they were — but that’s history,” said Martinez. There is still debate today over the deadly attack. But if Villa being the namesake of dozens of ******** restaurants across the country — including the “Pancho Villa Burritos” food truck in Columbus — is anything to go by, then it’s safe to say, at least in some circles, an admiration for him lives on. 10. Reach drilling confirms gold model in WA’s prospective Murchison Reach drilling confirms gold model in WA’s prospective Murchison Reach Resources’ latest drilling program has confirmed the company’s gold model with mineralisation intersected in every hole, validating historical results at the company’s Murchison South gold project, near Paynes Find in Western Australia’s gold-rich Murchison region. The company now plans to optimise pit shells targeting the shallow, higher-grade, narrow-vein gold encountered within the project’s low-grade mineralised envelopes. The envelopes extend to a depth of 100 metres to 150m and have the potential for extensions. Independent mining consultant Mining Plus has been charged with the task of incorporating the latest data into the gold model they constructed to focus on high-grade areas within an optimal pit shell design. Mining Plus is an international firm operating across Europe, Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas, servicing projects in more than 40 countries globally. The Murchison South project, formerly known as the Primrose project, comes with an inferred mineral resource at its Blue Heaven deposit of 1.04 million tonnes grading 3.2 grams per tonne (g/t) gold for 105,000 ounces. Reach has an extensive historical database of about 300 drill holes from previous work at Blue Heaven. It drilled 11 holes in the latest program to test the accuracy of Mining Plus’ mineralisation model. An additional three holes were exploration holes seeking to test the estimated position of the Primrose fault. Management believes the drill program successfully met its objectives due to all drilling being conducted along the perceived position of the Primrose fault and encountering gold mineralisation in every hole drilled. The company’s focus was to define high-grade gold areas within the existing resource to determine prime areas for future mining development. It says the results confirm its model that gold-bearing quartz veins host the intercepts and remain open at depth. Reach now has an opportunity to expand the resource to improve the project’s viability or catch the eye of a willing suitor. The company also has a non-JORC compliant resource at its ****** deposit that it can target with additional drilling to elevate to JORC-compliant status. The non-compliant resource stands at 124,000t at 2.1g/t gold for 8300 ounces. The Primrose fault runs through the projects’ ****** deposit, up along its Blue Heaven deposit to the north and continues further north to other untested ground held by the company. We are very pleased with the results of this program as they align with and confirm the interpretation of the mineralisation from the model recently developed by Mining Plus. There are over 300 holes drilled at our Blue Heaven deposit, including high grade, shallow intersections and a JORC-inferred resource. New gold assay results from Murchison South consist of 9m at 1.32g/t from 50m, including a high-grade slice of 1m going 6.59g/t from 52m, and a 9m hit running at 1.07g/t from 58m. They provide evidence of continuity of the precious yellow metal from reasonably shallow depths. The latest hits from the 14-hole 1463m campaign come hot on the heels of standout results from the company’s first two reverse circulation drill holes. One hole returned a stellar interval of 41m running at 2.01g/t gold that begins from surface. It included 15m at 2.01g/t from 2m and a high-grade 5m section at 10.01g/t from 36m. Previous standout gold drill results from 300 historical holes include 2m going 50.5g/t from 22m and a superb 3m at 92.1g/t from 41m, including 1m at a super grade of 271g/t from 42m. The company will shortly choose samples to undergo initial metallurgical testing to better understand the potential for gold recovery. Management says the project has an existing mining lease and native title agreements in place. Like many fellow goldies at present, Reach may consider engaging in a profit-sharing arrangement with a specialist firm. Any specialist firm will need to be prepared to fund mining and hauling of ore to a nearby processing plant. Profits would be split equally between Reach and a specialist mining firm after processing costs. Reach could easily consider going it alone to some degree, as it has a healthy $4 million sitting in its bank account. Management has indicated its top 20 shareholder base is stable, reflecting their belief in the company’s ongoing strategy to maximise its existing projects on hand. Reach has refocused its recent efforts on the Murchison South project to enable the development of a small optimised open pit, high-grade gold operation. With gold prices booming at more than $4600 in local dollars, the strategy makes perfect sense. Is your ASX-listed company doing something interesting? Epic’s Worst Decision Was Killing Fortnite’s Best Storyline Without a Second Thought Epic’s Worst Decision Was Killing Fortnite’s Best Storyline Without a Second Thought Fortnite‘s decision to kill the best storyline it had come up with is a decision that fans find a little hard to digest, especially after giving it so much buildup over multiple chapters. Fortnite is known for creating compelling storylines. Image Credit: Epic Games The Seven was one of Fortnite’s biggest ongoing storylines that included a mysterious group of intergalactic soldiers, each with a distinct character trait, who fought against the Imagined Order (IO) and protected the Zero Point. However, their story was left unfinished, and a huge chunk of this narrative went unexplored. Epic Games pulled a Night King with The Seven The Foundation was The Seven’s leader in command. Image Credit: Epic Games Similar to how the Night King was hyped up right from the first episode of season 1 in Game of Thrones and then failed to live up to the expectations of the fans since a huge chunk of his character was left unexplored, The Seven too faced a similar fate in Fortnite. The Seven’s narrative is by far one of the most interesting ones in the game, and even the hype around it was immense. Epic had opened so many storylines and had built it up to another level. However, it just mysteriously died down. The game was also recently criticized for a bug that makes some skins useless. The Seven deserved a better end; these intergalactic warriors just disappeared on us one day without any prior notice, leaving a void behind. It is highly unlikely that players will see them return in future chapters. They were intergalactic warriors who just disappeared from the world of Fortnite one day. There are some claims that The Seven were either consumed or corrupted by Chrome. Fortnite has long been known for its interesting collabs. Fortnite had struck gold with The Seven content Fans are not satisfied with how The Seven’s story ended. Image Credit: Epic Games The Seven were a very interesting lot; they consisted of seven intergalactic warriors, including The Foundation, The Scientist, The Visitor, The Paradigm, The Origin, The Imagined, and The Order. The Visitor, as the name well suggests, was the first one to ****** land, inside a meteor, on the island in Season 4. After his arrival, the other followed in the following seasons and chapters. The war against IO lasted for a long time, and within that *******, The Seven gave players amazing content and helped launch The Collision after defeating Dr. Slone and ending IO’s control. Their story was left half cooked, and Epic Games did not put in any efforts in either closing or building on them. This is one of the biggest reasons why players were not happy with how things turned out with The Seven. What do you think about it? Let us know in the comments below. 15. Cops tout arrests during state-first pill-testing trial Cops tout arrests during state-first pill-testing trial More than 20 people were charged with drug possession at a weekend music festival that took part in a landmark NSW government-backed trial of pill testing. The two-day Yours and Owls music festival in Wollongong was the first of 12 festivals to have the NSW Health-run service as part of a controversial year-long pilot program. The Minns government announced in December it would allow the trial of pill-testing at music festivals – a practice some other states have adopted – from early 2025. Officers said they would keep a highly visible presence, including sniffer dogs, at the festival, except in or around the pill-testing site. Police on Monday said they charged 23 people with possessing prohibited drugs across the festival’s two days. Some 51 drug detections, mainly for MDMA, were made and 24 future court attendance notices were issued. Six patrons were ejected from the festival, police said. Earlier, Health Minister Ryan Park said abound 100 festival-goers used the drug testing facility, which he said was a “really positive” result. “This has been a policy that we’ve discussed with NSW Health and the team for a long time,” Mr Park told ABC radio. “It was about making sure that predominantly young people are as informed as possible when it comes to the use of these drugs.” He said 90 per cent of drugs tested contained the substance attendees had intended to purchase, with MDMA, ketamine and ******** most common. “People thought it was a really good addition to the music festival,” Mr Park said of the trial. Pill testing is legal in Queensland and the ACT, while Victoria launched a trial over summer. Advocates say pill testing is a proven harm minimisation strategy used in many countries for decades, while opponents say it sends mixed messages about the risks of using and possessing illicit drugs. The first step includes the development of an “intelligent phone” that supports AI agents. Honor said it will co-create agentic AI capabilities with partners. The second step includes the physical AI era, which also refers to robotics. The ******** brand highlighted that the industry will need to work together to create an open AI ecosystem. The final step includes the AGI era, where it claimed that the technology will expand the boundaries of human potential. While much of the corporate vision was focused on future developments and Honor’s positioning in the ongoing AI wave, the company also demonstrated a couple of new AI technologies. In collaboration with Google Cloud and Qualcomm, Honor showcased a graphical user interface (GUI)-based mobile AI agent that can reserve a table at a restaurant by using third-party services. In the demonstration, the agent was also able to add the reservation information in Honor’s calendar app. The company said it can also alert users to leave at a particular time, considering current traffic conditions. The agentic experiences will be added to its devices in international markets in the near future. The company also introduced AiMage, its new brand for in-house imaging technology. AiMage is powered by AI Kernel which offers support for hybrid device-cloud AI models. Honor will add a 1.3 billion parameter AI model on-device that can improve image clarity by 50 percent. The server-based AI model comes with 12.4 billion parameters and focuses on enhancing the quality of telephoto images. Honor’s AiMage will also power a new tool dubbed AI Upscale that can restore old portraits. The feature will first be rolled out to the Honor Magic 7 Series 1, starting March. It also plans to launch an AI Deepfake detection tool in the international markets via its smartphones. Ahead of the MWC 2025, Honor also introduced the MagicBook Pro 14, a new AI PC to select global markets. Highlighting its commitment to the ecosystem-based approach, the company announced that the Honor Magic series devices will receive seven years of Android OS and security updates. This will first be implemented in the European Union market. Additionally, the company said it will achieve operational carbon neutrality by 2024, and plans to reach carbon neutrality across its entire supply chain and products by 2050. Nasdaq Tests 200-Day MA, S&P 500 Holds Firm as Russell 2000 Breaks Weekly Trend Nasdaq Tests 200-Day MA, S&P 500 Holds Firm as Russell 2000 Breaks Weekly Trend Friday’s Oval Office meltdown points to a future of nuclear proliferation. How markets react to this and the long-term prospects for the U.S. remain to be seen, but it’s not good for either nation if the impasse continues. Will China step in and offer a deal to Ukraine in exchange for security? Will Russia eventually take it all in the absence of U.S. military aid? Can *** and Europe offer a plan that holds the stasis quo until European forces are in a position to resist? Markets may not react at all, but sellers are in a position to advance their position off the back of this uncertainty. The () broke below support of the rising channel on the weekly time frame; although on the daily time frame it managed to dig in its nails at support. On a more positive note, the index was able to find support at the 50-week MA despite the close outside the rising channel. The finished last week with a bullish piercing pattern following a successful test of the 200-day MA on higher volume accumulation. While this may be good enough for a rally to mount a challenge of its 50-day and/or 20-day MA, it will be a ******* challenge to get past 20,000. The also enjoyed a significant bullish piercing pattern coming off a mid-level support. The index has come close to retracing the entire trading range following the February ‘bull trap’. On the flip-side, technicals are net bearish. Other areas to watch are Breadth Metrics. The Percentage of Nasdaq Stocks Above Their 50-day MA has slipped to its low of 30%. Nasdaq Bullish Percents have made a new swing low on net bearish technicals. And the Nasdaq Summation Index is approaching the sixth month of its bearish divergence on net bearish divergences. None of these breadth metrics are good news for the Nasdaq in the long term, and we are long overdue for a move below its 200-day MA despite Friday’s successful test. 23. Fraudsters stole £40k from Hertfordshire man via phone scam Fraudsters stole £40k from Hertfordshire man via phone scam Julian Paszkiewicz Radio 4, You & Yours Stephen Stephen said dealing with the fraud had taken him seven hours a day to resolve since it first began three weeks ago A man targeted by fraudsters who got his mobile phone number from an energy company said he often woke up in the night thinking “what next?”. Stephen, from Hertfordshire, had more than £40,000 taken from a savings account after his name and email address address was used to get the information from EDF. Within 48 hours of his mobile phone number being divulged, his accounts with O2, Nationwide Building Society and Virgin Media had all been compromised. EDF said such incidents were rare but it took them seriously and added: “We are sorry for the difficulties this fraudulent caller has caused Stephen.” Reuters The energy company said its verification processes were followed but it was subsequently made aware the call had been fraudulent The man, who is being identified only as Stephen, told BBC Radio 4’s You and Yours programme he was alerted to the criminal action on 3 February. He received a text from O2 confirming he had changed his password. After telling O2 he had not changed his password, the firm said he must have been a victim of a Sim swap scam, which sees his mobile number used and transferred to a new Sim card. The next morning, EDF emailed him asking for feedback on his recent contact with the company, despite him not having made that call. He was told its fraud department would get in touch but a week later had heard nothing. Accounts raided Meanwhile, O2 confirmed his new sim card was on its way, but it was connected to a different mobile phone number. Its shop staff told him to check his emails and he discovered from his email provider Virgin Media that someone had changed his password. As he was trying to fix that, criminals raided his accounts. On 5 February, he could not access his Nationwide credit card. The building society then upped his security. Reuters He became aware of the fraud when O2 sent him a text confirming he had changed his password, which he had not Worse news was to come, when he learned his National Savings and Investments password had been changed. “After an hour of talking to different people there, they said, ‘You’ve actually taken out a very large amount of premium bonds, over £40,000’,” said Stephen. ‘£50 to close the case’ After more than a week, EDF finally responded about the call it thought Stephen made at 11:00 GMT on 3 February. EDF explained the fraudster had his name and email address and had asked EDF to give them his mobile number, which the company did. “I said, ‘Why would you do that?’ They said the person had gone through security. ‘With a name and email address’, I asked?,” he said. “EDF said, ‘Yes’ – and then offered me a £50 goodwill gesture to close the case. “I was just amazed and I thought: ‘How can they do this and does that mean all my other bank and building society accounts are compromised as well?’.” The call from the fraudster to EDF happened three hours before O2 received a request to move his number the sim-swap scam. Criminals do it to bypass two-factor authentication to change passwords and access anything else you need a code from a text message for. Stephen reported the fraud to Hertfordshire Police and it was passed it on to Action Fraud as the crime was believed to have been committed outside the county. In 2021, Action Fraud, the ***’s reporting centre for fraud and cyber crime, received about 500 reports – last year this had grown to more than 2,000. Getty Images BBC One’s Scam Interceptors host Nick Stapleton said this type of fraud was devastating because victims were unaware until it was too late Cybersecurity expert and host of BBC One’s Scam Interceptors, Nick Stapleton, advised people to think about what they shared on social media. “If you’ve got a social media account that’s not protected and has things like a picture of your dog with its name underneath, or of your family with their names tagged, scammers can use those to get past security questions,” he said. He also recommended adding a PIN number to the sim card, which can be done in a phone’s settings, and the use of authenticator apps to generate random codes, instead of ones sent by text. Stephen believed poor customer service helps criminals by giving them more time. “Some nights I just wake up in the night thinking, what next? It’s been very difficult really,” he said. National Savings and Investments said it had refunded him the money taken from his account. Nationwide Building Society said the fraudulent purchases were blocked, adding that as well as meeting its legal obligations, it needed to balance security with customer service. O2 Virgin Media confirmed the scammer telephoned its call centre requesting a new sim and had hacked Stephen’s emails. A spokesperson said he had been offered “£125 as a gesture of goodwill”. EDF, which has nearly six million *** customers, said: “The security procedures were followed. We subsequently recognise this was fraud. “These incidents are rare, but we take them seriously and are reviewing our processes. We have also discussed this incident with the Information Commissioner’s Office.” Source link #Fraudsters #stole #40k #Hertfordshire #man #phone #scam Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  24. Earthquake hits Hollywood as stars gather for Oscars afterparty Earthquake hits Hollywood as stars gather for Oscars afterparty A magnitude 3.9 earthquake has hit Hollywood as some of the globe’s top stars began celebrating after the Oscars. The earthquake’s epicentre was measured in North Hollywood, just miles from where the awards ceremony was hosted at the Dolby Theatre. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The quake struck shortly after 22:00 local time as celebrities were gathering at the popular Vanity Fair afterparty. Those in the area reported a sudden jolt of energy, with some screaming and seeing high-rise buildings wobbling like jelly. The US Geological Survey (USGS), which tracks such events, said the earthquake was felt miles across Los Angeles. There was no tsunami alert issued as a result of the relatively minor earthquake. The Los Angeles Fire Department said that the earthquake was felt across downtown Los Angeles but the agency was not entering into “Earthquake Mode” over the incident. For stronger earthquakes, first responders and officials do assessments of the area to ensure there is no structural damage to buildings and infrastructure. The quake is among about 40 that have hit Southern California since the start of March – though nearly all of these were magnitude 1 earthquakes that aren’t typically felt by residents, according to USGS data reviewed by the BBC. Last month, there was a magnitude 3.7 earthquake that struck the nearby Malibu area. In December, a strong magnitude 7 earthquake jolted northern California and caused a short tsunami alert for those in northern California and southern Oregon. BBC correspondents covering the Academy Awards in the heart of Hollywood reported fierce shaking and even some screams as the sudden jolt scared visitors. To some, it sounded like a bomb went off with the rumble. One resident called it the biggest earthquake she’d felt and was surprised it was only a magnitude 3.9. “I felt that in my bones,” she remarked. The BBC’s Emma Vardy said she was retouching her makeup for some final Oscars filming when the quake struck. Her diamond earrings wobbled in the mirror and she realized the high-rise she was in was shaking. “I have felt a lot of quakes over the past two years in Los Angeles but currently, I am on the 15th floor of our media centre in Hollywood,” she remarked. “Feeling a building of that size move around like jelly is quite an experience.” Sam Granville and Emma Vardy contributed to this report.
