Bitcoin jumps nearly $14,000 in three days on Trump’s crypto reserve announcement Bitcoin jumps nearly $14,000 in three days on Trump’s crypto reserve announcement Jakub Porzycki | Nurphoto | Getty Images Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Bitcoin Over the weekend, Trump announced the creation of a strategic crypto reserve – a pivot from the “bitcoin stockpile” he previously touted – that he said will include ether, XRP, Solana’s SOL token and Cardano’s ADA, in addition to bitcoin. Bitcoin rose as high as $95,000, while the smaller coins rocketed double digits. It was welcome news to investors, who have been anxious for cryptocurrencies to come out of their consolidation. Last week, bitcoin fell under the key $90,000 level for the first time in three months to, at one point, 25% below its January all-time high. That break below support put it at risk of a ******* slide toward $70,000. Losses in smaller, riskier coins have been even steeper. “The weekend news is exactly the type of catalyst investors have been looking for to feel reassured about follow through from the U.S. administration with respect to its crypto friendly policies,” Joel Kruger, market strategist at LMAX Group, told CNBC. “Now that we’ve already seen a healthy correction in February, this sets the stage for the start to the next leg higher for crypto assets.” Investors this week will be watching for clues about the direction of the reserve plans. White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks teased in a post on X that there would be “more to come” at the first White House Crypto Summit, scheduled to take place this Friday. How long prices stay elevated may depend on the details disclosed at the event. 2. Frontier Airlines passenger who punched window and was restrained by crew and other fliers is charged Frontier Airlines passenger who punched window and was restrained by crew and other fliers is charged A Frontier passenger started punching the seat in front of him and a window, an FBI affidavit stated. Raul Ramos Tamayo was restrained by crew and other passengers on the flight from Dever to Houston. Police met the flight when it landed and he could face a prison sentence or fine if convicted. A Frontier Airlines passenger could be given a prison sentence after being restrained midflight by other travelers last month. Raul Ramos Tamayo, 31, was on Frontier flight 4856 from Denver to Houston, per an affidavit from an FBI special agent. About 30 minutes after takeoff, he started punching the seat in front of him, witnesses are said to have told the FBI. After crew members approached him, Tamayo is alleged to have started punching a window, resulting in damage. The affidavit stated that the cabin crew then asked for help from any law enforcement officers or able-bodied passengers, several of whom helped restrain Tamayo with flex cuffs around his wrists and ankles. Tamayo was then put back into a seat and surrounded by the passengers who subdued him for the rest of the 2½-hour flight, it added. Officers from the Houston Police Department met the flight at the gate at George Bush Intercontinental Airport. Tamayo was charged with destruction of aircraft or aircraft facilities. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison sentence and a fine of up to $250,000. The FBI affidavit cited an internal airline report that said the damage included a cracked window, broken window shade, and broken outer lining of the window. The total cost of the damage was estimated at $1,546. “Based on my experience as a Special Agent, I know that a passenger on an aircraft must not cause damage to the aircraft, especially when the aircraft is in flight,” the affidavit read. While cases of unruly passengers remain above pre-pandemic levels, it isn’t clear that they always result in prosecutions. Some airlines are taking more legal actions themselves. Ryanair, Europe’s biggest airline, said in January it was suing a passenger for about $15,500 because the individual caused a flight to divert. “When the public flies, they need to feel confident that they are doing so under safe conditions,” said Nicholas J. Ganjei, US Attorney for the Southern District of Texas. “Given the fact that greater Houston has two major international airports, with tens of millions of travelers a year, the Southern District of Texas is always ready to prosecute those that endanger the safety of passengers.” Read the original article on Business Insider Source link #Frontier #Airlines #passenger #punched #window #restrained #crew #fliers #charged Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  3. Blizzard’s Logic of Not Including a Loot Filter In Diablo 4 Is Annoying but Somehow It Makes Sense Blizzard’s Logic of Not Including a Loot Filter In Diablo 4 Is Annoying but Somehow It Makes Sense Few things are as divisive as loot management in dungeon-crawling action RPGs. Diablo 4 players have been clamoring for a loot filter since launch, but Blizzard seems determined to swim against the tide. Their reasoning? It’s not just about the loot—it’s about the whole darn economy. Diablo 4′s accidental endgame boss: loot. | Image Credit: Blizzard Entertainment While endgame players struggle with an overwhelming flood of items, Blizzard’s stance might feel a bit tone-deaf to some. Yet, in a twist worthy of Sanctuary itself, their logic isn’t entirely without merit. It’s just… different. And in true Blizzard fashion, they’ve managed to both address the issue and dodge it simultaneously. Why Diablo 4′s loot philosophy is both maddening and methodical Blizzard’s approach to loot in Diablo 4 is well-intentioned but can be frustrating for players drowning in drops. In a recent Q&A video, Game Designer Aislyn Hall laid out their philosophy: So, the way that we think about loot in Diablo IV right now is that we want you to basically use, like, ‘every part of the animal.’ It’s a noble idea, really. In theory, every piece of gear should have value, whether you’re wearing it, selling it, or turning it into crafting materials. But in practice? It can feel overwhelming and increasingly frustrating, especially when you’re an endgame player trying to sort through mountains of loot after a high-level run. Hall continued: When you find loot, when you find Legendaries—even if you don’t plan to use them—we want you to be able to salvage them and for that to flow into the economy of how you’re interacting with systems, like the Blacksmith and the Enchanter and all the different crafters. This approach makes sense from a design perspective. Blizzard wants a robust, interconnected economy where every drop contributes to your character’s progression. But the problem begins when you’re knee-deep in World Tier 4 Nightmare Dungeons, drowning in more loot than a dragon’s hoard. At that point, picking through every drop feels less like economic strategy and more like a part-time job sorting through digital yard ***** leftovers. The community’s cry for change and Blizzard’s careful consideration Loot management is becoming the real grind. | Image Credit: Blizzard Entertainment Players aren’t just whining for the sake of it—the endgame loot situation in Diablo 4 can genuinely get overwhelming. When you’re sifting through hundreds of items after a single Helltide, even the most dedicated hoarder would cry uncle. The devs aren’t completely deaf to these pleas. Hall acknowledged: We won’t ever say never to a loot filter, wholesale, and that’s something that we want to hear people’s feedback from the community on all the time, and I think that’s really important. It’s a classic Blizzard non-answer answer. They’re listening, but they’re not committing. It’s like when your parents said they’d “think about it”—you knew it probably wasn’t happening, but there was just enough hope to keep you from throwing a tantrum. The irony is that other ARPGs have already solved this problem. Path of Exile 2 and Last Epoch both feature robust loot filters that let players customize their experience. It’s not rocket science—it’s just good game design. So, where does this leave Diablo 4 players? Stuck between a rock and a hard place, or rather, between a mountain of loot and Blizzard‘s economic vision. For now, it seems players will have to keep playing inventory Tetris and praying to the RNG gods for that perfect drop. What’s your take on Diablo 4‘s loot situation? Are you drowning in useless legendaries, or do you appreciate Blizzard’s “waste not, want not” approach? Share your thoughts in the comments below! 4. Lokko is an upcoming mobile, PC and PS5 project from Sony’s India Hero Project Lokko is an upcoming mobile, PC and PS5 project from Sony’s India Hero Project Lokko is a new creation from developer Appy Monkeys This India-based developer created it in conjunction with Sony’s India Hero Project Lokko offers cross-play with mobile, PC and PS5, and Dualshock features for all three When it comes to development hubs, one of the less discussed areas of the world is in India. Well, not on our end of course as we’ve often looked at upcoming projects like Indus Battle Royale, and wondered aloud about what it says about the future of Indian game development. It seems that the future might be here now, with the upcoming 3D platformer Lokko. Lokko comes courtesy of Sony’s India Hero Project, which is an incubator that works with Indian developers to help develop their next hit release. Developer Appy Monkeys have created Lokko as a result of this partnership, a 3D platformer packed with level editors and an in-depth avatar creator; the objective? Deliver pizzas on time while duking it out with the monopolistic Goobol food corporation. The most interesting part of this project? It’s the fact that Lokko is not only cross-platform but also cross-play compatible and uses the power of Dualshock in all its versions. Lokko-motion It’s not hard to see that Lokko offers all the greatest hits of many modern success stories in gaming. Lokko has character customisation, level creation and a relatively low-poly aesthetic, similar to something like Roblox. But at the same time, this comes backed with the power of PlayStation and plenty of potential to offer a credible alternative to that aforementioned platform. Gameplay-wise, it doesn’t look as if we’re reinventing the wheel, but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what developers Appy Monkeys have in the works. And I’m certainly excited to see what else arrives from the India Hero Project too. While we don’t have a solid release date on Lokko (aside from sometime this year) you can still check out another excellent indie release that’s just gone cross-platform in the shape of eldritch fishing simulator Dredge from ****** Salt Games! 5. Vaccine critic RFK Jr. backs measles vaccine amid deadly Texas outbreak Vaccine critic RFK Jr. backs measles vaccine amid deadly Texas outbreak Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a noted vaccine skeptic, voiced support for the measles vaccine Sunday amid a deadly outbreak in the Southwest, mainly in Texas. An unvaccinated child who died in late February in Texas was the first U.S. fatality from the highly contagious disease in a decade. Recently confirmed as health secretary, Kennedy has previously made numerous false and misleading claims about the safety of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine and had downplayed the growing outbreak, saying annual outbreaks were “not unusual.” But on Sunday, Kennedy said he was “deeply concerned about the recent measles outbreak,” in an opinion piece published by Fox News. “Vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons,” he wrote. However, he said, “The decision to vaccinate is a personal one,” and he urged all parents to “consult with their healthcare providers to understand their options to get the MMR vaccine.” He said he had directed federal health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), to provide support to Texas health authorities. The CDC and other health agencies have faced staffing cuts in recent weeks as part of President Trump’s sweeping overhaul of the federal government. Kennedy said health workers, officials and communities were responsible for “ensuring that accurate information about vaccine safety and efficacy is disseminated” and making “vaccines readily accessible for all those who want them.” Kennedy has dismissed critics who say he is anti-vaccine, claiming his views were mischaracterized and insisting he was advocating for “common sense” policies. Kennedy wrote in the piece that, “The current Texas outbreak has predominantly affected children, with 116 of the 146 cases occurring in individuals under 18 years of age. The DSHS reports that 79 of the confirmed cases involved individuals who had not received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, while 62 cases had unknown vaccine status. At least five had received an MMR vaccine.” Dr. Céline Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, said recently on “CBS Mornings” that even a slight dip in vaccination coverage can lead to outbreaks. “This is a measles outbreak that began in a very close-knit, rural, Mennonite community that has very low vaccination rates. And unfortunately, we have seen vaccination rates exemptions … really soar in Texas in recent years,” she said. While measles was declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, outbreaks persist each year. Vaccination against the respiratory virus is very effective at conferring immunity — with two doses estimated to be 97 percent effective, according to the CDC. Last month, Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious disease physician and senior scholar at Johns Hopkins, told CBS News the outbreak in Texas was “troubling, because this was completely preventable.” He pointed out that Texas “has the lowest vaccination rates, the highest school exemption rates from measles vaccination — having a measles outbreak, including hospitalizations of individuals who’ve been infected with measles.” Adalja said it should act as a reminder that measles is still a risk when proper precautions aren’t taken. 6. Piers Morgan returns to Good Morning Britain after almost four years Piers Morgan returns to Good Morning Britain after almost four years Yasmin Rufo Culture reporter PA Media Piers Morgan has returned to Good Morning Britain almost four years after he left ITV over controversial comments about the Duchess of Sussex. The 59-year-old re-joined his former co-presenter Susanna Reid and Ed ****** on the show to discuss his recent conversation with US President Donald Trump. The TV presenter walked off the morning programme on 8 March 2021 after he said he did not believe claims made by Meghan Markle during her and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah Winfrey. On Monday morning, Morgan started his interview saying: “Hang on, are we just going to ignore the fact I haven’t been here for 1,453 days?” He then tried to give Reid a hug, which she rejected, saying: “No, I don’t want a hug.” Former MP ****** offered to hug Morgan, saying: “We don’t mind hugging.” Morgan also remarked to Reid that she had “moved on so fast” to a new co-presenter, to which she replied: “I’ve got a couple of new husbands now.” ****** assured Morgan that she did not hug him either, to which Reid responded: “No, I don’t do hugs, as you know.” Launching into the interview, Morgan said he had a phone call with Mr Trump on Friday ahead of the US president’s clash with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. He said Mr Trump had been in an “upbeat mood” on the call where they had discussed numerous topics including Ukraine. “I’ve had screaming matches with him, literally, and then an hour later, we’re laughing and joking, doing a fun interview. “So I always think with him, focus on what he does, not what he says, or the general drama and chaos. “And secondly, understand that this is almost uniquely in modern times, a Republican president in America who wants peace, not war.” At the end of the interview, Morgan told ****** to stop wearing ties but the former MP replied: “Piers, as you know, I always do what the editor wants.” To which Morgan quipped: “Or what Susanna tells you to do, bad for her brand if you take the tie off.” Reid said it had “nothing” to do with her and pointed out the exit to him, saying: “There’s a door there. I’m not sure if you recognise it Piers?” The episode of GMB that Morgan stormed off from four years ago is the most complained about show in Ofcom history with more than 54,000 complaints lodged. The Duchess of Sussex also made a formal complaint to ITV about Morgan. The media watchdog later ruled that Good Morning Britain was not in breach of the broadcasting code over Morgan’s comments but said they were “potentially harmful and offensive”. 8. Pokémon TCG Pocket’s new drop event is underway, with Gible up for grabs Pokémon TCG Pocket’s new drop event is underway, with Gible up for grabs Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket’s latest drop event is underway Log in and take on solo battles for a chance to grab Gible There’s even more besides in Promo Pack A Series Vol. 5 Despite a successful launch, February was a bit of a rocky month for Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket. The somewhat botched incorporation of trading went down like a lead balloon and required more than a bit of damage control. Fortunately, as we head into March, things are becoming a little more balanced, especially with a chance to nab fan-favourite Pokémon Gible in the newest Drop Event. From March 3rd to the 17th, Poke-fanatics can jump into the event and duke it out in solo battles to win Promo Pack A Series Vol. 5. Naturally the headlining Pokemon in these cards is the humble Gible, a Dragon & Ground-type Pokémon who boasts a fierce personality. Of course, Gible isn’t all that’s available in these packs, and the great thing about Pokémon TCG Pocket’s promo events is that, unlike some other releases, you get plenty of additional cards with their own uses to add to your deck. Blasting off agaaain-! The trading disaster, even if it’s a bit strong to call it that, is certain to be a make-or-break moment for Pokémon TCG Pocket. Promo events such as this have proven popular but they also don’t do much that isn’t already done by other popular digital TCGs, so I reckon that we’ll have to keep a closer eye on how more distinct features like trading are changed over the coming month to see if Pokémon TCG Pocket can continue to stand out. It’s certainly doing well on the downloads front, having passed over 100 million as mentioned before. But that’s to be expected for something from such a mainstay of the TCG scene. In the meantime though, don’t go in unprepared if you’re planning to jump into it. Instead, be sure to check out our list of the best decks for Pokemon TCG Pocket to get prepped! 9. The Ancient Greek Roots of Southern Italian Music and Dances The Ancient Greek Roots of Southern Italian Music and Dances Greek culture has been prevalent in Southern Italy since the 7th century BCE. Photo of 4th century BCE red figure volute-crater found in Puglia. Credit: Ghettoniala Public Domain The musical tradition of the Italian Greek populations of Southern Italy remains strong to this day, as do the variations of the language that has been spoken since the 8th century BCE. The popular tarantella folk dance and the accompanying songs are part of a long tradition of two ancient cultures that have influenced each other through the centuries. The first Greek colonies in modern day Italy were established in the south around 700 BCE by Achaeans. They were organized around two main centers. The first is located in the southeastern tip of Italy (in the Puglia region) and specifically on the Salento peninsula. The second center is located in Calabria, southeast of Reggio. As the colonies multiplied, the term Magna Graecia (Greater Greece) came into effect, a term that several of the local descendants of the ancient Greek settlers like to use to this day. In both Salento and Calabria, two dialects were semi-officially used before the unification of Italy into a single state in 1861. One was Greek with two subdialects, which in the Grecia Salentina region is called Griko, while in the Bovesia region, the similar Grecanico is spoken. The other, the Romance dialect, is derived from Latin, but is distinct from the official Italian language. Its exclusively oral transmission ensured its continuity and survival for over a thousand years. Archaic-Doric, Hellenistic and Byzantine influences from the local Romance dialect are found in these Greek linguistic idioms of Southern Italy, due to the long coexistence of the two dialects. Greek musical traditions The musical tradition of Magna Graecia goes alongside the customs and the linguistic traditions that developed over the years. It includes songs that correspond to all aspects of everyday life. Although there are differences between the musical traditions of Salento and Calabria, the popular poetry of these regions presents, for the most part, a varied but similar theme. Consequently, in all the communities of Southern Italy we see compositions such as laments, love songs (serenades), wedding songs, work songs, religious songs, lullabies, “short songs for the entertainment of children” and dance songs prevailing. The lyrics of the songs were written mainly in Greek and Romance dialects and more rarely in Italian, without showing any differences in the essence of their themes. Some of them are of particular beauty, emotionally charged and insightful. The tarantella is the most popular traditional dance of Southern Italy, also known as the “spider dance.” It took its name from the tarantula spider (tarantola) which was named after the Italian city of Taranto, where this species is found. Southern Italy and Sicily were colonized by the ancient Greeks in the 8th century BCE during the second colonization. From then on and for the next 200 years, Greek tribes founded colonies, creating the famous Magna Grecia (Greater Greece), which was marked by the cultural flowering of the Apulia and Calabria regions, starting from Brindisi and Lecce and reaching the Salento region. Despite the passing of centuries, Greek culture is still very strong in the region, with the famous tarantella forming a connection between Greek and Italian culture. Tarantella and the Grecanico dialect The Greek influence on the tarantella songs is in the lyrics, which are written and sung in the Grecanico dialect. The Greek community in Southern Italy remained distinct until the end of the Byzantine *******, when it merged with the Italian. This coexistence created a Grecanico-Italian dialect that combines words from ancient Greek and Byzantine times with the Italian language and musicality. The Grecanico dialect spoken by the inhabitants of the Greek-speaking villages of Southern Italy has reached modern times through oral transmission from generation to generation, and especially through the lyrics of the tarantellas. Today it is recognized as a dialect of the Greek language. It is the variety of Italiot Greek used by the ethnic Griko people in Calabria, as opposed to the Italiot Greek dialect spoken in the Grecìa Salentina. Both are remnants of the Ancient and Byzantine Greek colonization of the region. Myths about the origin of the tarantella vary, but there is no denying that it is a ritual and ecstatic dance, much like the frenzied celebrations and mystical rites of Dionysus, the Greek god of wine, revelry, but also of mysticism and spiritual ecstasy. One popular hypothesis about its origin is related to the ancient Greek Pantheon religion and in particular to the worship of the god Dionysus. This is due to the similarity in its dance movements with those of the depictions of the Bacchides on ancient Greek vases. Another version of the origin of the tarantella comes from the people of Taranto. The dance traces its origins to Taranto, a city in Puglia, the “heel” of Italy’s “boot.” The city, in fact, takes its name from a type of wolf spider native to the area, a spider that became the subject of considerable myth and lore. According to popular belief, the spider’s bite was particularly venomous and induced frenzied behavior in its victims, who were usually women of lower socioeconomic status. The dance represented the frenzy that the bite of the tarantula spider brings to a person through dance. In the Middle Ages, people believed that the antidote for the treatment of the poisonous bite was to dance around the patient with spasmodic movements, like those of the spider. In this way, the tarantella came to symbolize liberation from suffering, extending this meaning to other social occasions, such as the liberation of women. The most popular folk dance To this day the tarantella is the most popular traditional dance in Italy and people dance the crazy dance in local festivals and fairs, always using lyrics in the Greek dialect. Although it is a medieval dance, today there are many local musical groups and bands that play this music and have made it an integral part of the Italian music industry. In fact, every year the festival “La Notte della Taranta” is organized, where tarantella music is played, attracting over 120,000 thousand visitors every year. The tarantella is one of the remnants of Magna Graecia and the Italian Greeks, highlighting the history of the region and acting as a cultural diplomat of the dance drama that connects Greek and Italian cultural heritage. 11. Domino’s Pizza launches stuffed crust to rival Papa John’s, Pizza Hut Domino’s Pizza launches stuffed crust to rival Papa John’s, Pizza Hut Domino’s Parmesan Stuffed Crust. Source: Domino’s Pizza Domino’s Pizza is finally releasing its own version of stuffed crust on Monday, aiming to win over the customers who are willing to spend more on the pricey pizza customization. Thirty years ago, Yum Brands’ Pizza Hut debuted the cheesy stuffed crust, marketing the launch with a television commercial starring Donald Trump. As years passed, rivals Papa John’s and Little Caesars eventually followed with their own takes. Trump went from hawking pizza to sitting in the Oval Office. Generations of consumers have grown up with stuffed crust, including the increasingly important Gen Z diners, who are entering the workforce and buying their own pizzas now. The addition is critical for Domino’s, the top U.S. pizza chain, to compete with rivals Pizza Hut and Papa John’s, which have ceded market share to Domino’s in recent quarters but still steal the pizza chain’s customers. “Nearly 13 million Domino’s customers each year are buying stuffed crust from our competitors, and these are our customers who have to leave our brand because we’re the only national pizza brand that doesn’t offer it,” Domino’s Chief Marketing Officer Kate Trumbull told CNBC. Domino’s has taken so long to release stuffed crust that a survey of its customers found that 73% already believed that the chain offered it on the menu, according to Trumbull. That all changes on Monday, when Domino’s launches its Parmesan Stuffed Crust. The menu item is included in the pizza chain’s $9.99 carryout deal. When Pizza Hut originally launched stuffed crust, Domino’s viewed the menu item as gimmicky, according to Trumbull. Plus, the company heard that stuffed crust caused bottlenecks and slowed down service, leading to unhappy customers and workers. But Domino’s perspective changed after more national competitors followed Pizza Hut’s lead. The chain committed to launching its own version in 2022, when its sales were faltering in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic pizza *****. “It has been one of the longest development efforts in the company’s history,” Trumbull said. The process began with extensive market research. Findings included that stuffed crust customers tend to buy pizza more frequently and often spend more per transaction. Eight potential iterations followed before Domino’s landed on the right recipe for its Parmesan Stuffed Crust, made with mozzarella and topped with garlic seasoning and a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. At the same time, Domino’s was improving its restaurants’ overall operations, retraining its employees across the system on making its crust and rolling out a custom dough spinner to restaurants. If the pizza chain hadn’t made its kitchens more efficient, it wouldn’t have been able to launch stuffed crust, according to Trumbull. Ahead of the launch of Parmesan Stuffed Crust, the pizza chain spent 12 weeks training franchisees and 7,000 stores on how to make it properly. “We’re not going to leave anything to chance after taking three years,” Trumbull said. 13. Israeli police say one killed, others hurt in rare attack by Druze man Israeli police say one killed, others hurt in rare attack by Druze man An elderly man has been killed and four other people have been wounded in what police say was a terrorist stabbing attack in the northern Israeli city of Haifa. It happened at the HaMifratz Central train and bus station, and the attacker was shot dead at the scene by security guards, police said. The victim who died was aged around 70, the Magen David Adom ambulance service said. A 15-year-old boy and a man and a woman in their 30s were in a serious condition, while a 70-year-old woman was moderate hurt, it added. The police said the attacker was an Israeli Druze man from the town of Shfaram who had recently returned from abroad. Such an attack by a member of Israel’s Druze community is rare. The Druze are an ethnic and religious group whose faith is an offshoot of Shia Islam. About 150,000 live in Israel and the occupied Golan Heights, comprising about 1.5% of the population. A witness told Israel’s Walla news website that the attacker travelled to Haifa on a bus from Shfaram, which is about 10km (6 miles) east of Haifa. He began stabbing passengers when the bus arrived at the station, then got off and attacked others on the concourse, the witness said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “My wife Sara and I send our deepest condolences to the family of the man who was murdered in the shocking terrorist attack in Haifa. “We will continue to fight everywhere against those who seek to ******* us and we will defeat them.” There was no immediate claim from any armed groups, but ****** described the attack as “heroic” and a “natural response” to what it called Israeli crimes against Palestinians. It comes amid deadlock between ****** and Israel over moving forward with the six-week-old Gaza ceasefire deal. Israel stopped aid from entering Gaza after ****** rejected what Netanyahu’s office said was a US proposal for an extension to the first phase, which ended on Saturday night. ****** accused Israel of reneging on the deal and said the second phase should go ahead as agreed. Who benefits from Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act extension Who benefits from Trump Tax Cuts and Jobs Act extension Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) leaves after the House passed Republicans’ budget resolution on the spending bill on Feb. 25, 2025 in Washington. Kayla Bartkowski | Getty Images News | Getty Images As Congress debates how to handle trillions of dollars in expiring tax breaks, lawmakers on both sides have been lobbing claims about which consumers will see the biggest benefits from extending them. Economists and tax experts say the answer isn’t so straightforward. In short: Who benefits depends on your frame of reference. House Republicans passed a budget plan Tuesday that lays the groundwork to extend the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a package of tax cuts enacted in 2017 during President Trump’s first term. Many of the cuts for individual taxpayers will expire after 2025 unless Congress acts — and the GOP can do this with a simple majority vote in Congress by using a special legislative maneuver called budget reconciliation. Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass., ranking member of the House Ways and Means tax committee, said Wednesday that Republicans’ policy plan — central to which is an extension of the Trump tax cuts, estimated to cost more than $4 trillion — amounts to a “reverse Robin Hood scam” that gives to the rich and takes from the poor. Meanwhile, Republicans say low- and middle-income households stand to win under the plan. “Extending the Trump tax cuts delivers the biggest relief to working-class Americans and small businesses in a generation,” Rep. Jason Smith, R-Missouri, chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, said Tuesday. Experts say both sides’ arguments have merit. “The interesting thing is both can be true, depending on how you interpret what they’re saying,” said James Hines, a law and economics professor at the University of Michigan and research director in its Office of Tax Policy Research. The Trump law cut taxes for most people President Trump speaks about the passage of tax reform legislation on the South Lawn of the White House on Dec. 20, 2017. Saul Loeb | Afp | Getty Images The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act lowered taxes for most U.S. households, experts said. The legislation was broad, benefiting Americans across the income spectrum — which is broadly consistent with Republicans’ claims, they said. Changes like a larger child tax credit and an expanded standard deduction cut income taxes for many low and middle earners, while lower marginal tax rates and tax deductions for business owners largely helped the wealthy, experts said. If TCJA provisions are extended, 62% of tax filers would see lower tax bills in 2026, compared to if the measures expire, according to the Tax Foundation. (Put another way, many people’s tax bills would increase next year without an extension.) More from Personal Finance: Trump, DOGE job cuts may be biggest in history Funding freeze stymies Biden-era consumer energy rebates Trump, Musk float idea of $5,000 ‘DOGE dividend’ checks With those provisions in place, Americans would get a 2.9% boost in income after taxes in 2026, on average, according to the Tax Foundation. Income would rise by 3.4% if factoring in broader impacts of the tax cut on the U.S. economy, it said. A U.S. Treasury Department report issued in the waning days of the Biden administration had a similar finding: The average person would get a 2.2% tax cut by extending the Trump law. (Its estimate is for the 2025 budget year.) All income groups would get a boost in after-tax income, Treasury said. The rich are the ‘biggest winners’ U.S. House ********* Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), joined by Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-CA) and Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA), delivers remarks after the House passed Republicans’ budget resolution on the spending bill on Feb. 25, 2025. Kayla Bartkowski | Getty Images News | Getty Images However, with an extension, the largest tax cuts would accrue to the highest-income families, Treasury said. Household in the top 5% — who earn over $450,000 a year, roughly — are the “biggest winners,” according to a July 2024 analysis by the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. They’d get over 45% of the benefits of extending the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, it said. A Penn Wharton Budget Model analysis on the impacts of the broad Republican tax plan had a similar finding. The bottom 80% of income earners would get 29% of the total value of proposed tax cuts in 2026, according to the Wharton analysis, issued Thursday. The top 10% would get 56% of the value, it said. This dynamic speaks to Democrats’ arguments, especially when coupled with possible spending cuts for programs like Medicaid and food stamps. Such programs largely benefit lower earners. Wharton estimates that the combination of tax cuts and spending reductions for programs like Medicaid and food stamps would leave “low-income households worse off,” even after accounting for economic growth. Some tax analysts view after-tax income as among the best frames of reference to assess policy impact, because it estimates how much a household’s buying power improves. Others disagree, however, saying it’s hard to control for other economic variables that might alter income. The top 1% of households (who make about $1 million or more a year) would get a 3.2% boost in after-tax income in 2027 via an extension of the Trump law, the Tax Policy Center said. In dollar terms, their tax savings would be about $70,000, on average. By comparison, middle-income households, would get a 1.3% income boost, or a $1,000 tax cut, according to the Tax Policy Center. The rich ‘pay most of the taxes’ In a sense, this dynamic is to be expected because the U.S. income-tax system is progressive, experts said. That means high earners generally shoulder more of the overall tax burden than low earners. “If you ask, ‘Who gets the dollars,’ it’s mostly rich taxpayers,” said Hines of the University of Michigan. “But that’s because it’s a tax cut and they pay most of the taxes.” The top 1% paid 40% of all U.S. income taxes collected in 2022, according to a recent Tax Foundation analysis. The bottom 90% paid about a quarter — 28% — of total income tax. “Democrats say most of the tax dollars went to the rich: They’re absolutely correct,” Hines said. However, the TCJA cut taxes more for working families than rich families on a proportional basis, a White House spokesperson said. Experts agreed with that assessment. “Republicans say, ‘But the cuts were not slanted to the rich compared to how much people were paying originally,” which is also generally correct, Hines said. (Their rate fell to 3.4% from 4%.) By contrast, the top 1% saw their average rate decline by a lesser percentage (about 5%) during that *******, to 25.4% from 26.8%. “The reason why the debate is so fractured is there are elements of truth to both sides,” said Garrett Watson, director of policy analysis at the Tax Foundation. “It’s a battle of metrics, and what weight to place on each of them.” Source link #benefits #Trump #Tax #Cuts #Jobs #Act #extension Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  18. I stopped saying thanks to ChatGPT – here’s what happened I stopped saying thanks to ChatGPT – here’s what happened The first time ChatGPT responded to me, I instinctively typed, “Thank you, ChatGPT!” It just felt natural. But then I noticed a debate in which some people argued against using polite language with AI, claiming we should stick to direct, emotionless commands and avoid treating technology like a human. So, feeling curious and a little naive, I experimented. I stripped my prompts down to just instructions – no pleases, no thank yous, just blunt directives. But something felt off. My requests felt unnatural, and oddly enough, the responses seemed less helpful, too. That got me wondering, could politeness be more than just a social nicety? Could it actually influence AI’s responses – or even how we interact with technology in the long run? To find out, I asked the experts. Why are people polite to AI? It turns out that being polite to AI isn’t unusual – it’s the norm. A December 2024 study by Future (the owner of TechRadar) found that 71% of *** respondents and 67% of US respondents say they’re polite to AI – so reassuringly, I’m not alone. It’s easy to see why. Politeness is ingrained in us from childhood, and when interacting with AI, that habit naturally kicks in. As chatbots like ChatGPT become more sophisticated and human-like, many of us unconsciously treat them as more than just machines – which is known as anthropomorphism. But it’s not just habit. The way we talk to AI may reveal deeper social and ethical considerations. Does our tone with AI reflect how we treat people in everyday life? Could being respectful to chatbots reinforce positive communication habits overall? Some people even have a cautious superstition about it. In Future’s AI study, 12% of US respondents said they’re polite to AI because they believe it will “remember” them if it ever reaches Skynet (the fictional AGI from Terminator) levels of sentience. While this might sound far-fetched, it highlights a growing unease about the expanding role of AI in our lives – and an over-reliance on sci-fi to understand it, but that’s a topic for another day. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Ultimately, though, the big question is, does politeness actually change AI’s responses – or just our perception of them? How does politeness impact ChatGPT’s responses? Honestly, the answer to that question is complex and different depending on who you speak to. But the short answer is, sort of. “From a technical perspective, being polite generally doesn’t impact the actual accuracy of AI responses,” says Maitreyi Chatterjee, a software engineer at LinkedIn. AI models process queries based on content, not tone. But there’s more to it. “Software engineers like myself do usually train AI models to match the user’s communication style, and this can influence how we perceive the results,” she adds. In other words, AI mirrors our tone. If you phrase a question politely, the chatbot might respond in kind. Devansh Agarwal, a machine learning engineer at AWS (Amazon), agrees but adds that the effect depends on the AI model itself. “It’s less about politeness directly affecting the response and more about understanding why this happens,” he explains. For example, customer service chatbots are often designed to mirror user tone while avoiding conflict. “If a user is aggressive, the bot might try to de-escalate by keeping responses neutral and brief,” he says. “Conversely, in polite exchanges, the bot might offer more detailed answers, since there’s no risk of escalating tension.” This mirroring effect can shape how we perceive AI’s reliability. “Research suggests that tone influences trust, even when factual accuracy remains unchanged,” says Chatterjee. In short: polite phrasing doesn’t make AI smarter, but it can make it feel more helpful. It’s all about context Interestingly, politeness doesn’t just influence AI’s tone, it can actually improve response quality. But not because ChatGPT is helping you more because you’re being nice to it. But by being nice to it, you’re actually providing more context – maybe without even realizing it. “Polite phrasing often leads to richer prompts, which in turn result in better responses,” says Scott Valdez, the co-founder and CEO of Ari and Founder of VIDA Select. To illustrate his point, he asks me to compare these two prompts: “Give me dating advice!” is a vague command that will likely get a generic response. “Would you help me understand how to build dating confidence?” is more polite phrasing that adds layers of detail, which in turn provides: A focus area (dating vs. general confidence) A starting point (learning vs. demanding advice) A timeline (building confidence vs. quick-fixing a problem) A preferred response style (explanation vs. directive command) So it’s not just that the second version is politer, it’s clearer. Valdez explains that this pattern snowballs over time. Friendly, well-structured queries create a positive feedback loop: More context = better initial response. Users engage more deeply with thoughtful replies. Follow-up guidance becomes increasingly tailored. Conversely, blunt prompts tend to create a downward spiral. Give ChatGPT a vague command, it’ll give you a generic answer. You might get frustrated and give even shorter follow-ups, which leads to a decline in response quality. Beyond individual interactions, politeness may also tap into how AI is trained. “AI systems learn from millions of human exchanges, where polite, back-and-forth dialogue tends to produce richer, more nuanced conversations,” Valdez notes. “When users mirror this style, they unlock more sophisticated responses – like getting personalized advice instead of generic tips.” What does the research say? Well, it’s still early days. However, one 2024 study found that polite prompts did produce higher-quality responses from LLMs like ChatGPT. Conversely, impolite or aggressive prompts were associated with lower performance and even an increase in bias in AI-generated answers. However, the really interesting part is that extreme politeness wasn’t necessarily beneficial either. The study found that “moderate politeness” led to the best results – suggesting that AI models, much like humans, respond best to balanced, clear communication. Interestingly, the researchers also noted cultural differences in AI interactions. Since LLMs are trained on data from specific languages and regions, they may reflect the politeness norms of their training data. How to get the best responses from AI Use a moderate, natural level of politeness: Research suggests that balanced phrasing – not too abrupt or overly formal – produces the best results. Don’t overthink it: If you instinctively add “please” and “thank you,” there’s no harm in keeping them. But AI doesn’t require rigid politeness, so focus on clarity and context rather than etiquette. Use politeness to reduce bias: Early research suggests that aggressive or loaded prompts can increase bias and factual errors in AI responses, while neutral, structured queries lead to more reliable outputs. Be aware of global differences: Since LLMs are trained on different languages and cultures, politeness norms may vary across models. Does politeness to AI really matter? People have strong opinions about AI prompts. Some say they should be as direct as possible, while others prefer a human-like touch. Whether you should be polite or not is an ongoing debate with no clear yes or no answer – and it’ll largely depend on the AI tool you’re using. However if, like me, you instinctively add pleases and thank yous, research suggests that’s not just harmless – it might actually help. Polite, well-structured prompts often lead to better responses, and in some cases, they may even reduce bias. That’s not just a bonus – it’s a critical factor in AI reliability. As AI evolves, it will be fascinating to see whether politeness itself becomes a built-in feature. Could AI favor users who communicate respectfully? Will models be trained to respond differently based on etiquette? For now, one thing is clear: how we interact with AI shapes how we interact with the world. Politeness isn’t just about getting better answers – it’s about reinforcing habits of clarity and respect in all our interactions. 19. 5 Best Gold ETFs for March to Curb Recession Fears 5 Best Gold ETFs for March to Curb Recession Fears Several economic indicators are raising concerns and investor anxiety about a potential recession. When combined with persistent economic and geopolitical concerns, these indicators are leading investors to seek out safe-haven assets. ‘s ability to retain value has been recognized for centuries, making it a traditional haven during economic downturns. Its historical tendency to move independently from the stock market makes it a valuable diversification tool that can potentially protect investment portfolios from widespread market losses. Investors have access to a streamlined and efficient approach to gold investing through gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs). These instruments provide a convenient, liquid, and cost-effective method to gain exposure to the precious metal, offering an attractive alternative to holding physical gold. The Gathering Storm: Recession on the Horizon? Several economic factors are contributing to the current recessionary risk. The stall in U.S. business activity during February 2025 is a warning sign, suggesting that businesses are becoming more cautious in their operations and investments, which could lead to a slowdown in economic output. The sharp decline in consumer sentiment and confidence in February 2025 is also concerning, as it could lead to a pullback in consumer spending, which is a major driver of economic growth. While the fourth quarter of 2024’s rate of 2.3% was positive, it missed expectations and indicates a possible deceleration from previous periods. This underperformance, coupled with other warning signs, adds weight to the argument that the economy may be losing momentum. Specific sectors, such as construction, are already exhibiting signs of stress. Concerns regarding potential tariffs and their impact on material costs are weighing on homebuilder sentiment, creating potential headwinds for the real estate sector, a crucial component of overall economic health. In addition to domestic concerns, geopolitical uncertainties add another layer of complexity and risk. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the evolving trade policies of the U.S. administration create volatility and uncertainty in global markets. These factors contribute to a “flight to safety” mentality as investors seek assets perceived as less risky during turbulent times. Gold, with its long history as a haven, benefits directly from this shift in investor sentiment, explaining the increased demand and price strength. The ETF Advantage: Gold Investing Made Easy Gold ETFs offer a contemporary and streamlined approach to investing in this timeless asset. They provide a practical way for investors to participate in the gold market without the complexities and costs associated with physical gold ownership. To navigate the increasing recessionary concerns of March 2025, investors can consider the following five gold ETFs. 1. SPDR Gold Shares: The Gold Standard SPDR Gold Shares (NYSE:) is the world’s largest and most liquid gold ETF, with approximately $84 billion in assets under management (AUM) as of February 2025. It is often considered the benchmark for gold investment. This physical gold ETF has an expense ratio of 0.40%, and it holds physical gold bullion in secure vaults while it directly tracks the spot price of gold. GLD’s size and established reputation make it a preferred choice for institutional and individual investors seeking a reliable haven during economic uncertainty. Its unparalleled liquidity also makes it ideal for investors who prioritize ease of entry and exit, especially during volatile market conditions. As of February 27, 2025, GLD had advanced over 11% year-to-date, demonstrating its responsiveness to market conditions. 2. iShares Gold Trust: Cost-Effective Gold Exposure The iShares Gold Trust (NYSE:) has an AUM of roughly $33 billion. It offers a comparable investment strategy to GLD by holding physical gold bullion to track the spot price. However, IAU has a notably lower expense ratio of 0.25%. This lower expense ratio makes IAU especially appealing to long-term investors seeking cost-effective exposure to gold. IAU’s YTD performance stands at around 9.5%. For investors aiming to optimize returns during a recession, where every basis point is crucial, IAU presents an attractive alternative to GLD. 3. SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust: Maximizing Value SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (NYSE:) is the most cost-efficient option within the SPDR family of gold ETFs. With an exceptionally low expense ratio of 0.10% and an AUM of approximately $10.8 billion, GLDM is tailored for investors who prioritize minimal fees. This physical gold ETF holds gold bullion and tracks the spot price, providing a direct and inexpensive way to access the gold market. For long-term investors seeking to hold gold as a recession hedge, GLDM’s ultra-low expense ratio can translate to significant cost savings over time. 4. VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF: Leveraged Potential The VanEck Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:) invests in a basket of leading gold mining companies and offers leveraged exposure to fluctuations in gold prices. This ETF, which has an expense ratio of 0.51% and approximately $13.5 billion in assets under management, tracks the NYSE Index. GDX gives investors exposure to established gold mining companies whose stocks have historically outperformed physical gold during periods of rising prices. This makes GDX a potentially attractive investment for those seeking higher returns during a recession-driven gold rally. Additionally, GDX offers the potential for dividend income, which can provide a small buffer in a market downturn. 5. VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF: Higher Risk, Higher Reward The VanEck Vectors Junior Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:), which has an expense ratio of 0.52% and AUM of approximately $5 billion, tracks the Market Vectors Global Junior Gold Miners Index and focuses on small, junior gold mining companies. Junior gold miners are a riskier investment than more established mining companies, but they also offer a higher reward. This is due to their greater leverage on gold prices, which means their stock prices are more volatile and can rise and fall dramatically in relation to the underlying cost of gold. If recession fears trigger a substantial gold bull market, GDXJ could produce significant returns, but investors should be prepared for increased volatility and potential losses. Embracing Gold: A Strategic Move for Uncertain Times As economic concerns and recession fears escalate, gold ETFs are emerging as an increasingly important investment tool. These ETFs provide investors with a contemporary and streamlined method of incorporating gold into their portfolios. Gold ETFs present a range of choices for investors with varying risk profiles and investment objectives, enabling them to mitigate recessionary risks and strengthen their portfolio’s resilience. Strategic allocation to gold ETFs, customized to individual circumstances and risk tolerance, can serve as a valuable safeguard within a diversified investment strategy, assisting investors in navigating uncertain economic climates. 20. EU leaders prepare ‘concrete’ measures on defense financing, sources say EU leaders prepare ‘concrete’ measures on defense financing, sources say LONDON — The European Union is expected to announce “concrete” measures on boosting defense financing this week, sources told CNBC, as Europe and the United States clash over support for Ukraine. The 27 EU leaders will gather in Brussels on Thursday for a meeting dedicated to defense and support for Ukraine. It follows two particularly tense moments in U.S.-Europe relations: Vice President JD Vance’s speech in Munich in mid-February when he criticized European leaders; and the on-the-record clash between the U.S. administration and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in the Oval Office on Friday. European leaders are trying not to alienate President Donald Trump after he criticized Zelenskyy for “gambling” over a potential World War III. At the same time, Europeans know they have to take immediate action to ensure that Ukraine continues to receive the support it needs — and any further aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin is prevented. “There will be intense work in the coming days,” an EU official, who did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the discussions but is part of the preparations for Thursday’s meeting, told CNBC Monday. The same official said the aim is to announce “concrete deliverables” on the financing of defense. Traders will be watching the talks between EU officials closely. The European Stoxx Aerospace and Defense index has risen almost 23% in the year to date as investors bet on spending hikes, and was over 6% higher in Monday morning trade. Trump has often criticized European nations for failing to spend 2% of their GDP on defense, as stipulated by NATO rules. Since Trump’s first term, several countries have increased their defense spending and the latest NATO figures indicate that 23 of the 32 members are expected to have achieved the 2% target in 2024. Now, many NATO members are looking to increase spending even more, with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte telling CNBC in February that the figure will have to be “much more than than 2%.” Trump, meanwhile, has called for 5% of GDP as the NATO contribution target. How to spend more on defense European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced in February that EU fiscal rules will be updated to allow countries to spend more on defense without being constrained by specific debt and deficit targets. The unnamed EU official told CNBC that the next announcement will go even further. “We are looking at additional funding for defense at the EU level, including through flexibility in the use of structural funds and adaptation of the EIB mandate,” the official said. The European Investment Bank, which is targeting 95 billion euros ($99.26 billion) in investments in 2025, is currently constrained to only financing dual-use defense projects, which means they have to have both civil and military purposes. A second EU official, who did not want to be named due to the sensitivity of the talks, confirmed to CNBC Monday that Von der Leyen is expected to present “concrete measures” in terms of defense financing in the coming days. These will then be discussed by EU leaders on Thursday. Ukrainian servicemen drive Soviet-made T-64 tanks in the Sumy region, near the border with Russia, on August 11, 2024, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Russia on August 11 acknowledged Ukrainian troops had pierced deep into the Kursk border region in an offensive that a top official in Ukraine said aimed to “destabilise” Russia and “stretch” its forces. Roman Pilipey | Afp | Getty Images “We urgently have to rearm Europe. And for that I will present a comprehensive plan to the leaders on how to rearm Europe on 6 March when we have our European Council,” von der Leyen said at a summit in London on Sunday. In a recent report called “Defending Europe without the U.S.,” Brussels-based think tank Bruegel calculated that Europe could need “300,000 more troops and an annual defence spending hike of at least 250 billion euros in the short term to deter Russian aggression.” Goldman Sachs, meanwhile, said in a note Sunday that “in the absence of offsetting fiscal measures, the Euro area needs to fund an additional 0.6% of GDP annually to meet the defence spending target at 2.5%.” One key question is whether the EU will go so far as to agree to common borrowing for defense projects. The bloc decided to take that unprecedented step in 2020 in the wake of the pandemic (known as NextGenerationEU) and some member states believe this should be replicated for defense spending. However, more fiscally conservative nations want to exhaust other options before taking that step. According to Goldman Sachs, EU leaders could “repurpose” the outstanding financial capacity from the NextGenerationEU funds for defense. They could then look at a new program, which “could provide stable funding shielding defence spending from idiosyncratic national factors,” the analysts added. 21. Anora sweeps the board as Mikey Madison wins best actress at Oscars 2025 Anora sweeps the board as Mikey Madison wins best actress at Oscars 2025 Steven McIntosh Entertainment reporter Getty Images Anora star Mikey Madison said winning best actress was a “dream come true” Anora was the big winner at the Oscars, winning five awards including best actress for breakout star Mikey Madison, and a record-breaking four prizes for its director Sean Baker. The whirlwind drama stars relative newcomer Madison as a New York stripper who falls in love with the son of a wealthy Russian. She held off competition from Demi Moore, and described winning the best actress Oscar as a “dream come true”. Baker became the first person to personally win four Academy Awards for a single film – for directing, editing, writing and producing Anora. Other winners on the night included Kieran Culkin, Adrien Brody and Zoe Saldaña, while Flow won best animated film and I’m Still Here took home the best international prize. Watch: Standout moments from the Oscars 2025 In her speech, 25-year-old Madison said: “This is very surreal. I grew up in Los Angeles but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here standing in this room today is really incredible.” She added: “I want to honour and recognise the sex worker community. I will continue to support and be an ally… the women I’ve had the privilege of meeting from that community has been one of the highlights of this entire incredible experience.” The best director trophy was presented by Quentin Tarantino, who previously cast Madison in a small role in his film Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Accepting the trophy from Tarantino, Baker told him: “If you didn’t cast Mikey Madison… there’d be no Anora.” Getty Images Anora, directed and written by Sean Baker, won best original screenplay Baker went on to thank the Academy voters for “recognising a truly independent film”, and used his best director speech to champion cinemas. “Where did we fall in love with movies? At the movie theatres,” Baker said. “Watching a film in a theatre with an audience is an experience. “And at a time when the world can feel very divided, this is more important than ever, it’s a communal experience you just don’t get at home. “Right now the theatre-going experience is under threat, independently owned theatres are struggling, and it’s up to us to support them.” He concluded: “This is my battle cry: Film-makers, keep making films for the big screen. I know I will. Distributors, please focus first and foremost on the theatrical releases of my films.” Baker is the first person to win four Oscars for a single film. Walt Disney did win four prizes in a single night in 1953, but for four different films. Brody wins second OscarGetty Images The acting winners left to right: Adrien Brody, Mikey Madison, Zoe Saldaña, Kieran Culkin The Brutalist’s Adrien Brody was named best actor for his performance as a Hungarian-Jewish architect who moves to the US after World War Two to build a new life. Brody had not been nominated at the Oscars since 2003, when he became the youngest ever winner of best actor for The Pianist. “Acting is a very fragile profession,” he said. “It looks very glamorous, and in certain moments it is, but the one thing I’ve gained in having the privilege to come back here is to have some perspective. “And no matter where you are in your career, no matter what you’ve accomplished, it can all go away. And what makes this night so special is the awareness of that, and the gratitude I have to still do the work that I love.” Brody refused to be played off during his five-minute speech, continuing: “I’m here once again to represent the lingering traumas and repercussions of war, and systematic oppression, and antisemitism and racism. “And I pray for a healthier, happier and more inclusive world. And I believe if the past can teach us anything, it’s a reminder to not let hate go unchecked.” The Brutalist also scored two British wins – best cinematography for Lol Crawley, who grew up in Wales, and best original score for composer Daniel Blumberg. Saldaña successGetty Images Zoe Saldaña gave an emotional acceptance speech after winning best supporting actress Zoe Saldaña was named best supporting actress for her performance in Spanish-language musical Emilia Pérez, about a drug lord who changes gender. “I am floored by this honour,” she said in an emotional acceptance speech. “Thank you to the Academy for recognising the quiet heroism and the power in a woman like Rita,” referring to her character. “My grandmother came to this country in 1961,” she added, “I am a proud child of immigrant parents, and I am the first American of Dominican origin to accept an Academy Award, and I know I will not be the last.” Emilia Pérez also won best original song for El Mal, a song performed by Saldaña in the film. Culkin concludes clean sweepGetty Images Culkin was named best supporting actor for his performance in A Real Pain Succession star Kieran Culkin was named best supporting actor, a category he has dominated throughout awards season. The actor won for his performance in A Real Pain, about two cousins who travel across Poland in remembrance of their grandmother. In his acceptance speech, he said: “I have no idea how I got here, I’ve just been acting my whole life, it’s just been a part of what I do.” He thanked the film’s writer and director Jesse Eisenberg, telling him: “Thank you for this movie, you’re a genius. I’d never say that to your face, I’ll never say it again, so soak it up.” Culkin also paid tribute to his Succession co-star Jeremy Strong, who was nominated in the same category. Firefighters recognised The Oscars came two months after wildfires devastated Los Angeles. The best documentary award went to No Other Land, a collaboration between ************ and Israeli film-makers about the ongoing conflict in the region. “We made this film, Palestinians and Israelis, because together, our voices are stronger,” said co-director Yuval Abraham. Also during the ceremony, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande sang a Wicked medley, while Raye, Liza from Blackpink, Doja Cat and Margaret Qualley all performed as part of a James Bond tribute. 22. Capcom Is Turning Small Arachnids in Monster Hunter Wilds Into Jelly but the Big Ones Remain Pure Nightmare Fuel Capcom Is Turning Small Arachnids in Monster Hunter Wilds Into Jelly but the Big Ones Remain Pure Nightmare Fuel The latest entry in Capcom’s legendary action RPG, Monster Hunter Wilds has taken the gaming world by storm. Not only is the game fun and engaging, but it has also scared the socks off some players. To help with addressing this unsettling experience, the game has a feature called Arachnophobia Mode. Players are really enjoying the game. | Image Credit: Capcom However, while this mode transforms the smaller arachnid creatures into cute jelly monsters, it doesn’t work on the big ones. This has caused a ruckus in the community, as players unexpectedly find big monsters like Lala Barina and Nerscylla still running wild in their original form, leaving them terrified. Monster Hunter Wilds‘ one mode was meant to be a sweet solution to a spooky situation The mode doesn’t transform every single monster. | Image Credit: Capcom Players initially thought that turning Arachnophobia Mode On would modify the appearance of all the spider-like creatures in the game. Well, that is true to a certain degree. All the smaller arachnid creatures transform into blob-like jelly monsters. The change offers a humorous, lighthearted approach to addressing arachnophobia, turning unsettling monsters into almost comical jelly beans hopping around. For those who struggle with arachnophobia, it’s a clever and charming workaround, allowing them to continue enjoying the game. While the smaller arachnids get an adorable jelly makeover, the issues arise when players with the fear come face to face with the larger, more monstrous arachnids, specifically Lala Barina and Nerscylla. Why the issue? Because both of them remain unapologetically horrifying. When players face off against Lala Barina and Nerscylla, they’ll still experience the pulse-pounding terror that comes with hunting these colossal spiders. Not only are these monsters scary to look at, but they are also swift, their attacks deadly, and the environments they inhabit are full of tension. While the small, jelly arachnids might add an element of humor, the large ones are still nightmare-inducing, reminding players why Monster Hunter Wilds is still a heart-racing adventure that can take you on a wild ride, literally. A quirky yet effective accessibility feature This mode shows the developers understand the needs of players. | Image Credit: Capcom The addition of Arachnophobia Mode shows Capcom’s commitment to making Monster Hunter Wilds more inclusive without sacrificing the thrill of the hunt. By transforming the small arachnids into playful, jelly-like creatures, the mode offers an accessible way for those who struggle with arachnophobia to enjoy the game. Still, the studio is wise enough to keep the stakes high with the larger arachnids. This ensures that the horror and intense element of the game remains intact for players who enjoy those encounters. This way, players can test their courage and skill against the ******* scary monster, if they want to. Nothing better than testing your limits. Despite the lighter appearance of the smaller arachnids, there’s something hilarious about seeing these once-terrifying creatures now behaving like tiny, squishy jelly beans. Might make some players not want to kill them as these flopping jelly monsters have their own weird but adorable charm. In the end, Monster Hunter Wilds proves that Capcom is paying attention to the diverse needs of its player base while still ensuring the heart-pounding intensity that makes the series legendary. Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer review: tap your way to perfectly done meals Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer review: tap your way to perfectly done meals Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test. Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer: one-minute review The Kalorik Vivid Touch 7 Quart High-Resolution Touchscreen Air Fryer with Window stands out from the crowded air fryer scene in a couple of ways. First and foremost, it has a high-resolution touchscreen. I thought perhaps it was a silly gimmick until I actually tried it. The touchscreen meant that I didn’t have to refer to a guide to figure out how to cook a particular item. It’s all right there in the menu. For example, if you want to heat up some frozen french fries, just tap the French Fries option from the menu. From there, you choose from House Cut, Wedges, Fresh, Crinkle, Waffle, or Curly. Then you choose your quantity, make any adjustments to time and temperature you wish, and then hit start. The other feature that isn’t necessarily typical for air fryers is the large window and interior light so you can take a peek at your food’s progress without interrupting the cook cycle. Overall, this is a pretty typical drawer-style air fryer with some special touches that make it better. Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer: price and availability List price: $149.99 (about £119 / AU$240) The Kalorik Vivid Touch 7-Quart High-Resolution Touchscreen Air Fryer with Window is available at many retailers both online and in brick-and-mortar stores such as Amazon, Home Depot, HSN, Walmart, and more. Choose from three color options: stainless steel, graphite, and ******. The retail price is $149.99 USD for the 7-quart size. There is also a 5-Quart version, which retails for $129.99 and comes in just one color, stainless steel. You pull out the drawer by its large handle, place your food on the crisping tray, and air fry your food. However, instead of pressing buttons, the Vivid Touch is operated entirely via touch screen. (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) To use the air fryer, pull out the drawer and place the crisping tray inside. In the drawer, you’ll see markings indicating the level of food you have inside. These markings will come into play when you start a cooking cycle. In certain cook modes, you’ll select the quantity of your food of your based on these markings. Image 1 of 2 (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) The touchscreen menu technically has 12 cooking modes: French Fries, Frozen Faves, Pizza, Chicken, Red Meat, Pork, Veggies, Fish, Seafood, Bake, Vegan, Latin Food, Defrost, Preheat, Reheat, and DIY. In actuality, it’s much more than that. For example, if you tap on the Veggies menu, you’ll see more options: Florets (broccoli and cauliflower), Whole Corn, Cut Carrots, Cut Zucchini, Brussel Sprouts, and Green Beans. Under Chicken, you can choose from Wings, Tenderloins, Breast, Thighs, Drumsticks and Half Chicken. The Vegan menu includes Veggie Burger, Cauliflower Wings, Vegan Sausage, Tofu, Tempeh, and Seitan. Tap Latin Food and you’ll see Chimichangas, Taquitos, Arepas, Platanos Maduros, Enchiladas, and Nachos. Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) Choose your cooking mode, then choose your specific food. You’ll usually be asked to choose your quantity at that point, and also you’ll have the option to change the time and the temperature if you wish. Press Start. At the halfway point, you’ll get an alarm telling you to shake (or turn) your food for even browning. This is important, because the heat comes only from the top. If you don’t flip your food, only the top will get crisp and the underneath can get soggy. Tap the light bulb icon to turn on the interior light and keep an eye on your food through the window. You’ll be alerted when your cook time is complete. There is an “add two minutes” button you can tap if you like. Otherwise, remove your food and enjoy. Cleaning the Kalorik Vivid Touch is easy enough, just hand wash the drawer and crisping tray after use. I don’t even remove the tray for cleanup. You should also wipe down the interior of the air fryer outside of the drawer as needed. Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer: performance I tested a number of foods in the Kalorik Vivid Touch on various cooking modes with varying degrees of success. Generally it works best for air frying pre-made and frozen convenience foods or reheating and re-crisping leftovers. I did try baking in the Vivid Touch and that worked okay, but only when baking very small and thin items. (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) I can’t take credit for the tofu curry dish seen above, my youngest kiddo made this delicious dinner. They seasoned and breaded the tofu, fried it up in the Kalorik Touch and put it together with curry veggies and rice. It was truly perfection. (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) Frozen French Fries become a perfectly fried treat in the Kalorik Vivid Touch. The fries are crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. They couldn’t be easier to make. Just be sure to shake the drawer at the halfway point; you’ll be alerted when you should do so. This ensures even browning. Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) I made sweet potato “fries” from scratch in the air fryer with just a quick spritz of oil, salt, and pepper. They were delicious, browned on the outside and soft in the middle. I also make lots of fresh veggies and some definitely came out better than others. All of them got blackened, which I enjoy. But for some reason, the cauliflower came out perfect, but the broccoli and Brussels sprouts came out a little bit tough. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) Baking in the Kalorik Vivid Touch is possible but not ideal. I baked a quick two-ingredient bread (greek yogurt and self-rising flour) which came out pretty well. You definitely want to keep it thin and small, and even flip it if possible. I made pancake bites in a small silicone muffin mold, and it took two tries to get them right. The key is to fill the molds less than halfway. Fill them up any more than that and they come out burned on top, raw in the middle. I also attempted corn bread from a mix. I started with a baked the batter in two 5 x 5 inch pans instead of the 8 x 8 inch pan suggested on the box. I made one in the air fryer and the other in my toaster oven. The toaster oven one came out fine but the air fryer one was a fail. Though it was perfectly browned on top, it was raw in the middle. (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) However, when I heated frozen pre-made waffles in the Kalorik Vivid Touch air fryer, they came out just perfect. Nice and crisp on the outside, fluffy and warm on the inside. I did flip them halfway through the cook time and put a little chocolate on there which melted nicely. (Image credit: Karen Freeman / Future) Although I’m a vegetarian, I did make some chicken for my husband. I can barely touch raw meat, but I popped the chicken into the drawer, selected “Breast” from the “Chicken” menu, and it came out great. I did flip it half way as instructed, and I also added two minutes at the end of the cook time because it was a rather thick chicken breast. Should you buy the Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer? Swipe to scroll horizontally Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer report card Attributes Notes Rating Value Though the price is in line with typical air fryers, the easy touchscreen operation adds value. 4.5/5 Design Lookswise, the design is nothing special. But the high-resolution touch screen and interior light level up the design score. 4.5/5 Performance It performs as expected from an air fryer, keeping in mind that the heat comes only from the top so flipping is essential. 4/5 Overall This would be your typical air fryer except for the touchscreen that makes for a better user experience. 4.5/5 Buy it if Don’t buy it if Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer: also consider If you’re not sure about the Kalorik Vivid Touchscreen Air Fryer, here are some other options to consider … How I tested the Kalorik Vivid Touch Touchscreen Air Fryer I tested many different cooking modes multiple times I used it daily for two weeks to cook a variety of food I cleaned it daily I love to eat healthy meals but I don’t really enjoy cooking. I’m always on the hunt for a kitchen gadget that makes cooking quicker and easier. The Kalorik Vivid Touch does that, particularly for crisping up convenience foods so they taste amazing. 24. 25. Monster Hunter’s series producer is being put in charge of all Capcom’s development divisions Monster Hunter’s series producer is being put in charge of all Capcom’s development divisions One of the key producers responsible for the Monster Hunter series is being promoted to oversee all of Capcom’s development divisions. In a statement made by the company announcing various new personnel changes, it was stated that Executive Corporate Officer Yoichi Egawa will be resigning as of April 1, and stepping down from his role as Chief Product Officer in charge of Capcom‘s development divisions and pachinko business. Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto, who currently serves as ‘deputy in charge of development divisions’, will be promoted to the Chief Product Officer role and become the main person in charge of Capcom’s development divisions as of April 1. He will not, however, have to lead the company’s pachinko business too, with those duties moving to Capcom’s current COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto. Ryozo Tsujimoto has been at Capcom since 1996, where he joined directly after graduating from university. While he was originally given planning roles on arcade games such as Battle Circuit and Tech Romancer, it would be his work on Monster Hunter that would come to define his career. Ryozo Tsujimoto has been heavily involved in the development of most Monster Hunter games, mostly serving as producer. Initially working as a planner on the first Monster Hunter on PS2 and its PSP port Monster Hunter Freedom, Tsujimoto went on to produce Monster Hunter Tri, Monster Hunter Freedom 2 and Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. He has since held senior producer or executive producer roles on every major Monster Hunter game, including as senior producer of Monster Hunter World, Monster Hunter Rise and the recently released Monster Hunter Wilds. Monster Hunter World would go on to sell more than 25 million units worldwide, making it Capcom’s best-selling game of all time. Its successor, Monster Hunter Rise, has sold more than 15 million. The latest game in the series, Monster Hunter Wilds, looks set to enjoy equally impressive sales numbers, hitting a peak of nearly 1.4 million concurrent players on Steam during its first weekend.
