‘Sowing the seeds of hatred’: Aussie rocker Peter Garrett slammed after taunting billionaire Gina Rinehart at Perth Festival ‘Sowing the seeds of hatred’: Aussie rocker Peter Garrett slammed after taunting billionaire Gina Rinehart at Perth Festival Aussie music legend and former politician Peter Garrett has come under fire after encouraging festivalgoers to “pretend they’re dancing on Gina Rinehart’s grave”. The former Midnight Oil frontman took to the stage at Perth Festival with his other band The Alter Egos on Friday night. The 71-year-old told the audience to “pretend they’re dancing on Gina Rinehart’s grave” in a major dig at the billionaire mining magnate, while also slamming Woodside and US President Donald Trump, Perth Now reported. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia A Perth Festival spokesperson appeared to take no issue with the comments, and said artistic expression was personal, adding “views shared by artists are their own”. “Perth Festival recognises that people will have many different perspectives, experiences and opinions that reflect the complexity and rich diversity of our community,” the spokesperson said. Garrett is known for taking strong political stances, with his former band Midnight Oil shooting to stardom with political hits like Beds Are Burning and Blue Sky Mine. The rocker even moved into politics himself, becoming the Labor Member for Kingsford in 2004 before adding Minister for Environment and Arts and Minister for School Education and Youth to his portfolio. Second email to federal workers comes with caveat Second email to federal workers comes with caveat (NewsNation) — Federal workers received their second email asking them to explain their productivity in as many weeks. The Office of Personnel Management sent an email on Friday asking employees to list five bullet points worth of accomplishments. NewsNation obtained a copy of the email, which said it should be completed by each Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET. The email, titled “What did you do last week? Part II,” notes that links, attachments, or sensitive information should not be included. Crisis at the Border: On the Frontlines Last week, FBI director Kash Patel was among multiple chiefs to tell his employees not to respond to the email due to the sensitive nature of the job. Should workers be completing classified work, this week’s email says they should reply with “All of my activities are sensitive.” Earlier this week, Elon Musk said hundreds of thousands of federal employees have “another chance” to justify their recent accomplishments or risk losing their jobs. Donald Trump ‘tantrums’ spark security fears in Australia
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Donald Trump ‘tantrums’ spark security fears in Australia Donald Trump ‘tantrums’ spark security fears in Australia If Donald Trump continues his “tantrums”, Australia may need to “rethink our reliance on the US” and find other options to address security challenges, senators have said. The US President’s broadcast clash with Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky over the weekend triggered alarm bells in Western capitals and jubilance in Moscow. In Canberra, it sparked fresh concerns over Washington’s reliability as an ally, as Australia faces an increasingly hostile Indo-Pacific. Remarking on Mr Trump’s exchange with Mr Zelenskyy, Jacqui Lambie said on Monday it was clear the Ukrainian leader “has the backing of the Western world”. Camera IconSenator Jacqui Lambie says US President Donald Trump is ‘extremely unstable’. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia “There’s no doubt about that,” she told Nine’s Today, appearing opposite Coalition senator Dave Sharma. “If Trump wants to continue with his tantrums and change his mind every hour, then you have to leave him out of the equation because he’s extremely unstable and that is not good for world order.” The veteran went on say “we need to back Zelensky”. “If we let Russia take over … Ukraine, where’s it going next? Outside of Europe, inside of Europe, you know, what’s the next country? “That’s why they’re all. They’re all now spending more money on their defence.” Meanwhile, Senator Sharma said Australia may need to rethink its reliance on the US to guarantee its security. Camera IconSenator Dave Sharma, a former diplomat, suggested Australia needed to rethink its reliance on the US. NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia He said Mr Trump had “been quite clear that it is now a different foreign policy”. “America first, if you want to call it that,” he said. “It leaves us in a position where we need to do a lot more to look after our own defence and security needs. “I mean, in the Asia Pacific, the US has a strong network of alliances, including with Australia, but also with Japan, Korea, the Philippines, Thailand that underpins stability in that region. “And if the US can’t be relied upon to always uphold those alliance relationships unless it sees it in its own interests, then we will need to do more.” Source link #Donald #Trump #tantrums #spark #security #fears #Australia Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
Trump says he’s considering these 5 cryptocurrencies for new U.S. “strategic reserve” Trump says he’s considering these 5 cryptocurrencies for new U.S. “strategic reserve” President Trump on Sunday named five cryptocurrencies under consideration for a new U.S. “strategic reserve,” sending their values skyrocketing and partly reversing a recent slump. In a post on Truth Social, Mr. Trump said the President’s Working Group on Digital Asset Markets, a group he set up through an executive order shortly after taking office, is moving forward with the crypto reserve, which will include Bitcoin, Ethereum and three smaller cryptocurrencies: XRP, Solana, and Cardano. “I will make sure the U.S. is the Crypto Capital of the World,” Mr. Trump wrote. David Sacks, a venture capitalist and the president’s appointed White House AI and Crypto Czar, said on X Sunday that more details will be revealed at the White House Crypto Summit scheduled for Friday, March 7. Founders, CEOs and investors from the crypto industry will be among the attendees, according to the White House. The value of the digital currencies shot up following Mr. Trump’s social media post, with XRP trading up around 34% at 1:00 p.m. EST. Solana gained around 22% and Cardano rose more than 63%. A few minutes later, Trump posted again, noting that other valuable cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and ether would be at “the heart of the Reserve,” causing the price of the two major digital currencies to rise more than 10% and 12% respectively. Trump’s posts helped spur a broad rally among cryptocurrencies, which had plummeted in recent days as Trump’s tariff threats and new scandals affecting the sector shook investor confidence in the highly volatile assets. Sunday’s posts are not the first time that Trump and those in his orbit have weighed in on the crypto sector. Both Trump and his wife Melania recently launched their own branded meme coins, sparking accusations that they were seeking to make money from his political success. And the billionaire chief executive Elon Musk — a close political ally whom Trump has tasked with leading a government efficiency drive — has frequently promoted cryptocurrencies on his own social media network, X. The crypto industry also massively contributed to the 2024 election. Crypto companies made a third of all direct corporate contributions to super PACs last year, CBS News previously reported. Trump Marine One helicopter trip disrupts flights at Washington airport Trump Marine One helicopter trip disrupts flights at Washington airport By David Shepardson WASHINGTON (Reuters) -More than two dozen flights headed to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport were impacted on Friday by recent rules barring flights during presidential helicopter trips, flight tracking site Flightradar24 said. After a January 29 collision between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet killed 67 people, the Federal Aviation Administration adopted new rules effectively barring flights to the busy airport just outside the nation’s capital when the Marine One helicopter is transporting the president. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Flightradar24 said 10 flights on Friday night were diverted to other airports and more than a dozen others were held during a 38-minute ******* without arrival flights. Most flights were diverted to nearby Dulles International Airport, which, like Reagan National, is located in northern Virginia near Washington, while two were sent to Pittsburgh. The FAA did not immediately comment on Friday. Some airlines have told pilots to carry extra fuel because of the policy. The FAA has indefinitely barred most helicopter flights near Reagan National Airport and is only allowing police, medical and presidential transport helicopters. The FAA has said those restrictions will continue at least until the National Transportation Safety Board issues a preliminary report on the recent collision, which is expected in March. The Washington Post reported that on Feb. 14, a helicopter trip carrying President Donald Trump resulted in about 30 airliners bound for Reagan National having to circle for a ******* of time and at least nine aircraft being diverted to other airports. The policy also impacted flights on other days. Reagan National is home to the single busiest runway in the United States, and served 26.3 million passengers in 2024, a new record. Ilona Maher: American says ‘never say never’ on playing in the PWR again Ilona Maher: American says ‘never say never’ on playing in the PWR again Maher won bronze at the Paris Olympics last summer as part of the USA side and joined Bristol to switch back to playing XVs ahead of the World Cup in August. She said her focus now for the next few months will be to continue playing, with the American Eagles facing Australia and New Zealand in May as part of the Pacific Four Series. “We start with the Pac Four with USA 15s and I hope I’ve proven myself in this space to vie for a roster spot in the USA team and I hope I’ll be selected for that,” Maher said. “It’ll be a lot of continuing to learn the game and put myself in the position to make a roster for the World Cup but also be the best player I can be in the World Cup.” Bristol head coach Dave Ward and assistant coach Tom Luke were instrumental in bringing Maher to England and she said she was now a “Bear for life”. “I’m proud to have been part of this team, a special programme they have here,” Maher said. “The girls were so welcoming and made me part of the team and I got to play with some of England’s best players and Wales and Scottish, so it just set me up to be more successful at the World Cup. “I’ll be playing against them – I wish I was playing with them but it was amazing.” Source link #Ilona #Maher #American #playing #PWR Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

ODU study finds $15 billion in damage could occur if Category 3 storm hits Hampton Roads ODU study finds $15 billion in damage could occur if Category 3 storm hits Hampton Roads It could cost Hampton Roads tens of billions if a Category 3 hurricane were to hit the region, according to a new study by professors at Old Dominion University. Bob McNab, director of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy at ODU, said the team used Hurricane Florence to model scenarios for the region. Using a 3.6-foot tidal offset (meaning 3.6 feet in water rising from the median tide), potential damages across Hampton Roads were estimated at about $15.6 billion. Researchers found that funding better flood infrastructure now is a better investment than paying to repair damages down the line. “My worst-case scenario is Hampton Roads sees something happen like what happened to Homestead (Air Force Base),” McNab said. “Remember, there’s billions of dollars of military infrastructure, not including the defense industrial base, in the region. “If Oceana, for example, or Langley (Air Force Base) experiences significant flooding and damage to infrastructure, the Department of Defense, may just go, ‘That was enough. It was nice being there, but we’re going to move everything to Kansas,’ or somewhere else that’s not as flood prone.” The study also found storm of that magnitude would cause the short-term loss of more than 76,000 jobs. McNab said the positions affected would be concentrated in sectors that provide services to households. This includes industries such as retail trades, health care and social assistance and accommodation and food services. McNab said uninsured costs are a major driver of economic losses for a region. He said a single storm can take out a home, which means the homeowners’ main source of their wealth is gone as well as their source of income if their job is affected, as well. Homeowners in the 75th percentile for flood insurance claims observed “no loss in housing value,” the study found, and insured homes created “positive spillover” for the prices of nearby uninsured homes. The study’s researchers recommend increasing flood insurance enrollment and providing financial assistance to lower-income homeowners as potential policy solution to lessen impacts after a major storm. The study also found educating homeowners and renters on the costs associated with flood damage without insurance would be another step in the right direction. Though hurricanes of larger proportions are relatively rare for more direct hits in Hampton Roads, they are not impossible. McNab pointed to the 1821 Norfolk-Long Island hurricane, a heavily destructive storm, that caused $330 billion in damages — when adjusted for inflation. If federal assistance from entities such as FEMA becomes more limited, McNab said recovery and losses could persist for years after a storm. “One of the things that’s complicating the interpretation of the results is that we really do not know if the federal government would provide the level of assistance and in a post-hurricane environment that it has in the past,” he said. “We’ve seen, unfortunately, that the provision of aid can become a political question.” Eliza Noe, *****@*****.tld Source link #ODU #study #finds #billion #damage #occur #Category #storm #hits #Hampton #Roads Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

British PM outlines European plan to end Russia’s war with Ukraine – National British PM outlines European plan to end Russia’s war with Ukraine – National British Prime Minister Keir Starmer rallied his European counterparts Sunday to shore up their borders and throw their full weight behind Ukraine as he announced outlines of a plan to end Russia’s war. “Every nation must contribute to that in the best way that it can, bringing different capabilities and support to the table, but all taking responsibility to act, all stepping up their own share of the burden,” he said. Starmer’s exhortation to 18 fellow leaders that they need to do the heavy lifting for their own security comes two days after U.S. backing of Ukraine appeared in jeopardy when President Donald Trump lashed out at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and said he wasn’t grateful enough for America’s support. The meeting had been overshadowed by the extraordinary scolding. Starmer used the opportunity as part of his broader effort to bridge the gap between Europe and the U.S. and also salvage what had seemed like the start of a peace process before Friday’s spat. Story continues below advertisement Starmer said he had worked with France and Ukraine on plan to end the war and that the group of leaders — mostly from Europe —had agreed on four things. The steps toward peace would: keep aid flowing to Kyiv and maintain economic pressure on Russia to strengthen Ukraine’s hand; make sure Ukraine is at the bargaining table and any peace must ensure its sovereignty and security; continue to arm Ukraine to deter future invasion. A ‘coalition of the willing’ Finally, he said they would develop a “coalition of the willing” to defend Ukraine and guarantee the peace. “Not every nation will feel able to contribute but that can’t mean that we sit back,” he said. “Instead, those willing will intensify planning now with real urgency. The U.K. is prepared to back this with boots on the ground and planes in the air, together with others.” Story continues below advertisement 1:54 ********* volunteers in Ukraine more resolute after heated White House meeting He said any plan would require strong U.S. backing. He did not specify what that meant, though he told the BBC before the summit that there were “intense discussions” to get a security guarantee from the U.S. Get daily National news Get the day’s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day. “If there is to be a deal, if there is to be a stopping of the fighting, then that agreement has to be defended, because the worst of all outcomes is that there is a temporary pause and then (Russian President Vladimir) Putin comes again,” Starmer said. Starmer said he will later bring a more formal plan to the U.S. and work with Trump. Two diplomatic steps forward, one back Europe has been anxious since Trump initiated direct peace talks with Putin, who had been isolated by most Western leaders since invading Ukraine three years ago. The scramble to remain relevant and protect European interests as their once stalwart ally appeared to be cozying up to Putin was even more troubling when Trump called Zelenskyy a dictator and falsely said Ukraine started the war. Story continues below advertisement Meetings last week had provided some hope — until Zelenskyy’s trip to the White House. Visits to the Oval Office by French President Emmanuel Macron, who had declared his visit a “turning point,” and Starmer were seen as steps in the right direction. The meetings were cordial and Trump even took a gentler tone toward Ukraine, though he would not commit to providing U.S. security guarantees and maintained Europe would need to provide peacekeeping troops. 9:06 Ukraine deal off after Trump’s public spat with Zelenskyy Within 12 hours of Starmer’s return from Washington, the talk of peace seemed to collapse as Vice President JD Vance berated Zelenskyy for challenging Trump’s assertions that Putin could be trusted. During a press conference, Starmer rejected the suggestion that the U.S. was no longer a reliable ally. “There are no two countries as closely aligned as our two countries and our defense, our security and intelligence is intertwined in a way no two other countries are, so it’s an important and reliable ally for us,” he said. Story continues below advertisement Starmer does not trust Putin Trending Now Welcome to McDavid’s! Fast food eatery rebrands in honour of Edmonton Oilers captain How Canada plans to use Russian cash to help fund Ukraine’s war effort Starmer told the BBC before the summit that he does not trust Russian President Vladimir Putin but does trust Trump. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni said she was sorry for what happened with Zelenskyy in Washington. Meloni is both a strong Ukraine supporter and — as head of a far-right party —she is a natural ally of Trump. She was the only European leader to attend his inauguration. She said told reporters following the meeting that Europe must remain focused on its common goals and that “dividing the West would be disastrous for everyone.” “We need to work to reinforce our unity, and I think that Italy can play a role, not just in its own interest, but in everyone’s,” she said. “I don’t want to take any other scenario into consideration.” Story continues below advertisement Starmer hosted the meeting at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace, following his charm offensive with Macron to persuade Trump to put Ukraine at the center of negotiations and tilt his allegiances toward Europe. Leaders from Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Canada, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania were at the summit. The Turkish foreign minister, NATO secretary-general and the presidents of the European Commission and European Council were also in attendance. Turning Ukraine into a ‘steel porcupine’ Starmer used sweeping terms to describe the challenge ahead, saying Europe was at a crossroads in its history and needed to step up to meet “once in a generation moment.” European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen emerged from the meeting and said she would present a plan to “rearm Europe” to bolster the bloc’s security after a long ******* of under investment. Story continues below advertisement As for the future of war-torn Ukraine, von der Leyen said it needs security guarantees. “We have to put Ukraine in a position of strength, so that it has the means to fortify itself and to protect itself,” von der Leyen said. “It’s basically turning Ukraine into a steel porcupine that is indigestible for potential invaders.” 1:42 Displaced Ukrainians reflect on ‘surreal’ 3 years of war Last week, Starmer pledged to boost military spending to 2.5% of gross domestic product by 2027. Other European nations may follow suit. Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said Saturday that Europe faces a historic test and has to look after itself. He said European countries have to increase their arms spending to reach at least 3% of GDP. “If we don’t increase our effort fast enough and let the aggressor dictate its conditions, we won’t end up well,” he said. Story continues below advertisement Starmer pledged to supply more arms to defend Ukraine, announcing that the U.K. will use 1.6 billion pounds (US$2 billion) in export financing to supply 5,000 air defense missiles. —Associated Press writers Jill Lawless in London, Colleen Barry in Milan, Karel Janicek in Prague and Samuel Petrequin contributed. FAA reportedly ordered staff to find millions of dollars to fund Starlink deal FAA reportedly ordered staff to find millions of dollars to fund Starlink deal According to Rolling Stone, employees with the Federal Aviation Administration were told on Friday to “begin finding tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal,” after The Washington Post reported that the FAA may cancel its $2.4 billion contract with Verizon to overhaul the US’s airspace management systems and go with Elon Musk’s company instead. Whether the FAA has actually dropped its Verizon deal in favor of Starlink has yet to be confirmed publicly. Anonymous sources told Rolling Stone that the orders from FAA officials on Friday were “delivered verbally” to staff, in an “unusual” move. It comes a few days after Musk claimed on X that the situation around air traffic control communications is “extremely dire,” saying the existing system (which he wrongly attributed to Verizon before later adding a correction) is “breaking down very rapidly.” He went on to say that “Starlink terminals are being sent at NO COST to the taxpayer on an emergency basis to restore air traffic control connectivity.” Bloomberg, citing sources close to the matter, previously reported that 4,000 Starlink terminals were being sent to help upgrade the FAA’s networks, which the FAA confirmed. In a statement posted on X in response last week, the FAA claimed it’s “been considering the use of Starlink since the prior administration.” As recently as Wednesday, though, the FAA said in statements to The Washington Post and other publications that it had not made a decision about its Verizon deal. The agency is one of many that has been hit by layoffs led by Musk’s DOGE over the last few weeks, with hundreds of FAA employees fired in February. Arthur looking for answers despite Tigers mauling Arthur looking for answers despite Tigers mauling Leeds head coach Brad Arthur has criticised his side for trying to play “too cute and pretty” despite cruising to a 38-24 win over Castleford in their Super League clash at Headingley. A trio of late tries on Sunday lent the scoreboard a distinctly flattering look for the visitors, who had been wholly outclassed either side of the interval and remain pointless with three games gone. “I’m really happy with the first 60 minutes but we need to be an 80-minute team,” former Parramatta boss Arthur said. “We just tried to play too cute and too pretty in the last 20 minutes instead of playing tough like we had in the first 60. “We did all right to get to 38 points and I don’t know why we got bored with that.” Leeds laboured through the first 20 minutes before Jake Connor’s opener sparked a ******* of dominance in which the hosts ruthlessly punished their opponents’ errors. But, after seven players scored tries to put the result beyond doubt, the home side bizarrely let the visitors off the hook, much to Arthur’s annoyance. “The positive thing is that we didn’t get any injuries out of the game and we can learn the lesson of the last 20 minutes without it having cost us two points,” added Arthur. “The game was in the bag but Wigan wouldn’t do that, would they? We’re only in round three and we’re miles away from where I want to get to and where this team wants to be.” Former Rhinos hero Danny McGuire endured a painful return as Castleford head coach but tried to find some positives with his side still searching for their first points of the season. “I was proud of the way we kept battling to the end but I just think we’re lacking any kind of consistency with our actions at the moment,” he said. “There were some positive signs but there was some real lack of discipline, errors and poor skill, and Leeds took advantage.” McGuire, who won eight grand finals during his glittering playing career at Headingley, warned Tigers fans it will take some time before his efforts are reflected in results. “It was never going to be a straight road this year, there were always going to be some curves and bumps in it,” said McGuire. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves, and we’ve got to work to get better as a group.” Source link #Arthur #answers #Tigers #mauling Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Following Trump’s lead, his allies lash out at Ukraine’s Zelenskyy and suggest he may need to resign Following Trump’s lead, his allies lash out at Ukraine’s Zelenskyy and suggest he may need to resign PHOENIX (AP) — President Donald Trump’s senior aides and allies lashed out at Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy from Washington as he attended a European summit Sunday in London to rally international support for his military’s fight against the Russian invasion. Following Trump’s lead, White House officials and Republicans in Congress used news show appearances to demand that Zelenskyy display more gratitude for U.S. support and an openness to potential war-ending concessions to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Some suggested Zelenskyy should consider resigning even as Ukrainians rally around him. But they offered little clarity as to what Zelenskyy and Ukraine could do after Friday’s Oval Office meeting in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance berated him before canceling the signature of an economic agreement between Washington and Kyiv. The dispute leaves the future of that relationship in question, as well as the prospects for ending a conflict that began when the Kremlin invaded in February 2022. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. White House national security adviser Mike Waltz, who while in Congress went to Ukraine during the first year of the war to meet Zelenskyy and once compared him to wartime British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, said Zelenskyy’s behavior at the White House was “incredibly disrespectful.” Asked about that Churchill-Zelenskyy comparison, Waltz noted that Churchill was voted out of office in the final months of World War II. Churchill “was a man for a moment, but he did not then transition England into the next phase,” Waltz said. “And it’s unclear whether President Zelenskyy, particularly after what we saw Friday, is ready to transition to Ukraine to an end to this war and to negotiate and have to compromise.” Waltz said a negotiated end to the war would involve territorial concessions from Ukraine as well as “Russian concessions on security guarantees,” but he did not offer any more details about what Moscow would have to do. House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., echoed the suggestion that Zelenskyy may need to step aside. “Either he needs to come to his senses and come back to the table in gratitude, or someone else needs to lead the country to do that,” Johnson said. “I mean, it’s up to the Ukrainians to figure that out. But I can tell you that we are reexerting peace through strength.” Trump’s director of national intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, said the contentious meeting has led to “a huge rift in the relationship” and she took issue with Zelenskyy telling Fox News afterward that he did not think he did anything wrong. “There’s going to have to be a rebuilding of any kind of interest in good faith negotiations, I think, before President Trump is going to be willing to reengage on this,” she said. The coordinated campaign of pressure from Washington played out as Zelenskyy and European leaders came to terms with Trump’s overhaul of U.S. foreign policy. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the United Kingdom would use 1.6 billion pounds ($2 billion) in export financing to supply 5,000 air defense missiles for Ukraine. Support for Zelenskyy among congressional Republicans has been scant after the Oval Office meeting. But Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, one of the few GOP lawmakers willing to break with Trump publicly, criticized the Republican president’s stance toward the Ukrainians. “I know foreign policy is not for the faint of heart, but right now, I am sick to my stomach as the administration appears to be walking away from our allies and embracing Putin, a threat to democracy and U.S. values around the world,” Murkowski wrote on X on Saturday. Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., said it was inappropriate for senators to call for Zelenskyy to leave office and predicted that such a move would “spiral Ukraine into chaos right now.” Others were more vocal in support of Zelenskyy. Millions of Americans “are embarrassed, are ashamed,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. “Our job is to defend the 250-year tradition that we have of being the democratic leader of the world, not turn our backs on a struggling country that is trying to do the right thing,” Sanders said. Naomi Girma: Journey of the world’s most expensive female player Naomi Girma: Journey of the world’s most expensive female player Girma grew up in San Jose, California, to an Ethiopian-American family and played football in rented spaces in parks with friends. Her football experience began at the age of four, when her dad was a coach of local team Maleda Soccer Club, and she eventually joined Central Valley Crossfire five years later. She has said, external she was often “the only ****** girl on my team”, and praised the support of her fellow Ethiopian-Americans and family as her career developed, along with that of coach Bob Joyce. It was at Central Valley Crossfire where she linked up with Joyce in an all-girls team, and played there from the age of nine to 17. “She was a star track athlete in 400m at high school with good endurance and incredible speed,” Joyce told BBC Sport after revealing Girma had taken part in a training session only because she followed a class-mate to the club. “Most of the time she played for me as a central midfielder. I remember one coach coming up to me and saying ‘oh my god, she was shredding us today’. “With her left foot or right foot, it did not matter. She worked really hard on her weaker foot – the left. All of that contributed to her success.” By the time she was ready to join the National Women’s Soccer League, Girma was well-known in the US from her time at Stanford University. Former San Diego Wave manager Casey Stoney’s first job at the club was the college draft and there was no doubt in her mind who her first pick should be. “I remember watching so much footage [of Girma] and I was like ‘we need to pick this centre-back as number one,'” Stoney told BBC Sport. “I had a few good battles internally because other people didn’t want to pick her as number one and I was very strong because I saw so much talent and potential. “I know a centre-back when I see one. I’m very big on how we build our foundations and I just felt she would give us so much.” Source link #Naomi #Girma #Journey #worlds #expensive #female #player Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Researchers make concerning discovery while studying disease-carrying mosquitoes: ‘We cannot dismiss this’ Researchers make concerning discovery while studying disease-carrying mosquitoes: ‘We cannot dismiss this’ Recent research has revealed that mosquitoes may be able to transmit diseases across long distances by traveling via high-altitude strong winds, expanding their harmful impact on human health. What’s happening? A team of scientists conducted a study on the high-altitude movement of mosquito-borne pathogens. Science magazine reported on the findings, which support suspicions that mosquitoes can spread diseases farther than they otherwise would thanks to high-altitude movement. According to the report, mosquitoes typically stay close to the ground. They move at about the same pace as a human walking. Most travel no more than around three miles in their lifetimes. But some will soar between approximately 131 and 951 feet above ground. When this happens, they catch a high-altitude jet stream and can ride this powerful wind for 100 miles or more in one night. These trips appear to be purposeful, according to study author Tovi Lehmann, a mosquito ecologist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. Mosquitoes likely use the high-altitude winds to find resources elsewhere. And they can bring dangerous pathogens with them. Why is this mosquito movement important? The scientists captured over 1,000 mosquitoes moving at high altitudes over Mali and Ghana. They found mosquitoes carrying viruses like dengue, West Nile, M’poko, and avian malaria, per Science. “We cannot dismiss this movement of pathogens at altitude,” Lehmann said. He continued, “The relevance to human health is high, as it is to animal health, both domestic and wild.” Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Indeed, introducing such harmful pathogens to new locations could have catastrophic consequences, and Earth’s rising temperature only makes it easier for these vector-borne illnesses to spread, as a warmer climate allows mosquitoes to expand their ranges and supports their reproduction. Moreover, changes in climate may be impacting the high-altitude jet stream. A 2023 study suggested that the jet stream will move faster as the world warms. Per the National Center for Atmospheric Research, analysis suggests it will accelerate by 2% for every 1.8 degree Fahrenheit of temperature rise. This means mosquitoes could travel farther and faster than ever before. What’s being done about mosquitoes carrying pathogens long distances? Thankfully, scientists believe these movements may not massively impact the spread of diseases because traveling these enormous distances could weaken the mosquitoes. Heather Ferguson, an infectious disease ecologist at the University of Glasgow, told Science, “We don’t know if [they] would survive these long movements and be sufficiently fit to find and bite a host at the end of their journey.” After further investigation, these findings may ultimately influence future insect control methods in development, which include releasing genetically modified mosquitoes to control disease spread in some African countries, according to the report. For now, insect repellents and wearing long pants and sleeves are some ways to keep yourself safe from potential mosquito-borne diseases. In the long term, reducing pollution associated with warming global temperatures can bring the planet back into balance and make things less favorable for mosquitoes. Upgrading to energy-efficient appliances and technologies, like LED light bulbs, are simple actions to help.
