  1. Navy ship on rescue mission for stranded ocean rower Navy ship on rescue mission for stranded ocean rower A rescue ship is expected to arrive in the Coral Sea off Australia’s east coast, where a Lithuanian rower has been caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Aurimas Mockus ran into trouble about 740km east of Mackay while attempting a 12,000km Pacific Ocean crossing from San Diego to Brisbane in his solo rowing boat. He activated his emergency beacon late on Friday as Tropical Cyclone Alfred sent strong winds and heavy seas his way. A Cairns-based Challenger jet didn’t spot the tiny vessel on Saturday but managed to make contact with Mr Mockus, who said he was tired. The *********** Maritime Safety Authority shared images of the boat on Sunday and confirmed it had communicated with the adventurer via the rescue aircraft through an interpreter. “Mr Mockus has reported he has no major injuries,” it said in a statement on Sunday afternoon. HMAS Choules, a 16,000-tonne Royal *********** Navy landing ship, left Brisbane on Saturday to assist and was expected to arrive on Monday morning. Mr Mockus set off on the journey in October and was days away from reaching his final destination after rowing about 70 nautical miles a day. He was bracing for the “maximum power” of the cyclone on Thursday, saying he just needed to survive the next two days. Weather conditions have since eased but the Coral Sea was still within the category two cyclone’s influence on Sunday, with winds up to 100km/h and five to seven-metre seas, the *********** Maritime Safety Authority reported. Mr Mockus was attempting to join a short list of ocean rowers make the Pacific crossing solo without stopping. Brit Peter Bird was the first in 1983, followed by countryman John Beeden in 2015 and *********** Michelle Lee in 2023. Fellow *********** Tom Robinson, who was attempting to become the youngest to accomplish the feat albeit with a break in the Cook Islands, spent 265 days at sea before he was rescued off Vanuatu in 2023. The 24-year-old Queenslander’s rowboat capsized, leaving him clinging naked to the hull for about 14 hours before he was rescued by a cruise ship that made a 200km detour. 2. Man attacked by Mike Amesbury speaks out after MP walks free from prison Man attacked by Mike Amesbury speaks out after MP walks free from prison A man attacked by former Labour MP Mike Amesbury in a drunken row has said he feared he could have been killed as he spoke out about the politician being freed from prison. Paul Fellows, 45, was set upon by Amesbury after a disagreement about the closure of a local bridge as they both waited for a taxi at 2am in Frodsham, Cheshire, in October. CCTV showed Amesbury punch Mr Fellows to the head, knocking him to the ground, then following him onto the road, punching him again at least five times. Mr Fellows fell back and nearly hit his head on the curb of the high street. MP Mike Amesbury leaving Chester Crown Court after he had his 10-week prison sentence for assault suspended for two years (Peter Byrne/PA Wire) Amesbury was heard saying: “You won’t threaten your MP again will you, you f****** soft lad?” He was jailed for 10 weeks before being freed last week after winning an appeal and instead given a suspended sentence. Mr Fellows, a father of two, told The Sun on Sunday: “He could’ve killed me and deserves to be in prison. “Everyone knows one punch can kill. Any adult with an ounce of common sense knows that. As soon as you lay your hand on someone you’re committing an assault. “The intent was there. And if you punch someone you’ve got to accept the consequences. It could have been far worse.” He called on Sir Keir Starmer to change the rules to prevent Amesbury from earning his £91,346 annual wage as an independent MP after his conviction. Mr Fellows added: “If I got jailed I’d be sacked, so why should it be different for anyone else? Once you’re convicted you should just lose your job.” He also thanked a woman for intervening after claiming Amesbury “rained five or six punches” on the top of his head. “As these blows have come in, a lady ran over and shouted ‘Stop!’ and he’s walked away. I want to say thank you to that lady because it could have been far worse.” The former Labour MP, who is an independent after he was suspended by the party over the attack, refused to answer questions about whether he would resign as Runcorn and Helsby MP as he walked free from prison. Amesbury, 55, said: “I’d like to reiterate that I sincerely apologise once again to Mr Fellows and his family. I’m now going to go and see my family, and go home, and I’ll give a statement at a later stage.” He returned to Chester Crown Court in a prison van to appeal his sentence on Thursday, wearing handcuffs, after he was dealt an immediate jail term on Monday which saw him spend three nights at HMP Altcourse. Granting the appeal, honorary recorder of Chester, Judge Steven Everett, sitting with two magistrates, imposed another sentence of 10 weeks’ imprisonment but suspended it for two years. Trump announces strategic crypto reserve including bitcoin, Solana, XRP and more Trump announces strategic crypto reserve including bitcoin, Solana, XRP and more FRANCE – 2025/01/20: In this photo illustration, Trump Meme , Trump the Crypto president, is seen displayed on a smartphone screen. (Photo Illustration by Romain Doucelin/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images) Romain Doucelin | Getty Images Cryptocurrencies rallied on Sunday after President Donald Trump announced the creation of a U.S. strategic crypto reserve that will include bitcoin and ether, as well as XRP, Solana’s SOL token and Cardano’s ADA, he said in a post on Truth Social. “A U.S. Crypto Reserve will elevate this critical industry after years of corrupt attacks by the Biden Administration, which is why my Executive Order on Digital Assets directed the Presidential Working Group to move forward on a Crypto Strategic Reserve that includes XRP, SOL, and ADA,” the post said. “I will make sure the U.S. is the Crypto Capital of the World.” “And, obviously, BTC and ETH, as other valuable Cryptocurrencies, will be at the heart of the Reserve,” he said in a follow-up post. XRP surged 33% after the announcement while the token tied to Solana jumped 25%. Cardano’s coin soared more than 68%. Bitcoin and ether gained 7% and 11%, respectively. Stock Chart IconStock chart icon Bitcoin jumps on Trump’s announcement of a strategic crypto reserve Trump is hosting the first White House Crypto Summit on Friday, and investors will be watching closely for more clues about the direction of the reserve plans. Trump first introduced the idea of a national bitcoin stockpile last summer at Bitcoin 2024 in Nashville, one of the industry’s largest conferences, where he began courting the crypto vote. After his re-election in November, the drumbeat for a strategic bitcoin reserve grew louder, helping send the price of the flagship cryptocurrency to new all-time highs. That seemed to come to a halt after Trump issued his executive order on crypto in late January. It called for the President’s Working Group on crypto to evaluate the “potential creation and maintenance of a national digital asset stockpile, potentially derived from cryptocurrencies lawfully seized by the Federal Government through its law enforcement efforts,” among other things. Don’t miss these cryptocurrency insights from CNBC Pro: The industry had a lukewarm response to the language, however — in part because investors expected a focus on bitcoin, whereas the term “digital assets” suggested the stockpile could include other cryptocurrencies without giving specifics. Bitcoin had been in consolidation since the executive order. It just closed out its worst month since 2022, with its performance driven by macro uncertainty as it’s been absent a crypto specific catalyst. 5. NRL clubs looking to fight off Las Vegas ‘hangover’ NRL clubs looking to fight off Las Vegas ‘hangover’ Ivan Cleary expects Penrith will be in for a “comedown” after their win in Las Vegas as the four NRL clubs guard against starting slowly on return to Australia. It’s back to reality for Cronulla, Canberra, the Warriors and the Panthers on Monday (AEDT) as the four clubs begin their journeys home from the NRL’s second annual trip to Vegas. The quartet of teams have this coming weekend to reminisce on their Stateside visit, which ended in victories for Penrith and Canberra. As the four teams are overcoming jet-lag, the remaining round-one fixtures will play out in Australia from Thursday. It was a slow start to the season for the four clubs that made the trip to Vegas last year: none posted a winning record across the four weeks that followed their matches in Sin City. And the task of backing up could be more challenging this year. While last year’s Vegas visitors played one another in round two, the 2025 teams face sides that did not have to travel to the other side of the world to begin their NRL seasons. The Panthers lost their first game on return from last year’s World Club Challenge in England, and Cleary is bracing himself that his team could find itself with a “hangover” again in 2025. “There’ll definitely be a comedown, for sure,” he said after the four-time reigning premiers beat Cronulla in Vegas. “The Manchester trip last year, we felt that. The time difference is a lot more, so that’s more difficult. I think naturally there’s going to be (a comedown). “It’s just our job over the next couple of weeks to try and navigate through that.” Cleary was pleased the Panthers’ next game was against the Sydney Roosters in Parramatta, where the Panthers will play the majority of home games this year while Penrith Park is refurbished. “It’s handy that we’re playing our first game at CommBank next week against the Roosters, which will be a big occasion,” he said. The Sharks appear to have the toughest task ahead of them as the only one of the four Vegas teams to play away from home in round two. Cronulla travel to Townsville to face North Queensland in one of the NRL’s toughest away trips, and go on to visit Canberra, Perth, Newcastle and Brisbane before round 10. Coach Craig Fitzgibbon said his staff would be working to guard against a post-Vegas hangover. “We’ve got a plan in place for that, but we’re obviously still just addressing what happened in the game before we get to the next game,” he said. “We’ve got a thorough plan, we have to because we’re travelling a bit in the first six weeks.” Source link #NRL #clubs #fight #Las #Vegas #hangover Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Plane makes emergency landing on Galveston beach, allowed to take off again Plane makes emergency landing on Galveston beach, allowed to take off again The Brief A small plane made an emergency beach landing in Galveston Saturday afternoon. The pilot said the plane lost power to its engine. After being on the ground for about an hour, the plane was allowed to take off again. GALVESTON, Texas – A small plane made an emergency landing on Galveston’s West End Saturday, after losing power. What we know No one was injured after the plane lost power and made an emergency landing on the beach near 16 Mile Road. The pilot told Jamaica Beach Fire Chief Kyle Baden that the engine had stopped running and he had to quickly find a place to land. What they’re saying Barbara Bright was the lone passenger on the plane. She said the pilot remained calm during the ordeal, which made her calm. “All of a sudden, you could hear the engine change sounds,” Bright said. “I thought [the pilot] was joking at first. He said I better turn around and head for the beach. It all happened so fast.” Galveston Police Capt. Xavier Hancock said the pilot and police spoke with the Federal Aviation Administration and determined it was safe for the plane to take off again and return to its hanger in Pearland. “In my 18 years, 7 months, I cannot recall having done this evolution before,” Hancock said. The plane was on the beach for about an hour before it was allowed to leave. What we don’t know It is unclear what caused the power failure of the plane’s engine. 9. Cryptocurrencies to be in US strategic reserve: Trump Cryptocurrencies to be in US strategic reserve: Trump US President Donald Trump has announced the names of five cryptocurrencies to be included in a new US crypto strategic reserve, spiking the value of each in market trading. Trump initially said on social media on Sunday that his January executive order on digital assets would create a stockpile of currencies including XRP (Ripple), SOL (Solana), and ADA (Cardano). The assets rose 10 per cent to 35 per cent in trading on Sunday. Other digital assets also gained. Trump then added that the reserve would also include bitcoin and ethereum. Trump said his order “directed the Presidential Working Group to move forward on a Crypto Strategic Reserve that includes XRP, SOL, and ADA. I will make sure the US is the Crypto Capital of the World.” The Republican president won support from the crypto industry in his 2024 election bid, and he has quickly moved to back their policy priorities. Under his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, regulators cracked down on the industry in a bid to protect people from fraud and money laundering. In recent weeks though, cryptocurrency prices are down sharply, with some of the biggest digital currencies erasing nearly all of the gains made after Trump’s election win triggered a wave of excitement across the industry. Analysts say the market needs a reason to move higher, such as indications that the US Federal Reserve plans to cut interest rates or a clear pro-crypto regulatory framework from Trump’s administration. Trump is hosting the first White House Crypto Summit on Friday. His family has also launched its own coins. It is not clear how the new stockpile will be set up or work. Analysts and legal experts are divided on whether an act of Congress will be necessary. Some have argued the reserve could be created via the US Treasury’s Exchange Stabilization Fund, which can be used to purchase or sell foreign currencies. Trump’s crypto group had planned to look at potentially creating the stockpile with cryptocurrencies seized in law enforcement actions. Howard Lutnick said in an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures that there would be tariffs on Canada and Mexico starting on the announced March 4 date, though Trump would determine at what levels. “There are going to be tariffs on Tuesday on Mexico and Canada,” he said. “Exactly what they are, we’re going to leave that for the president and his team to negotiate.” The secretary’s comments come just three days after the president said his threatened 25 per cent tariffs against both countries were going ahead as scheduled. 1:58 ********* officials bracing for Trump’s trade tariffs In a post on Thursday on his social media platform Truth Social , Trump reiterated his claim these tariffs were linked to the flow of fentanyl and migrants into the U.S. from both countries. Over 19 kilograms of fentanyl from Canada were apprehended in the last fiscal year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and cabinet ministers have said fentanyl seizures at the border have dropped 90 per cent over the past month, something the White House highlighted in a readout of Trump’s call with Trudeau last weekend. Yet Trump said during an Oval Office meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday that Canada hasn’t made progress on stopping fentanyl “at all.” Story continues below advertisement It’s not just Canada and Mexico that will face tariffs Tuesday, however. 11. You Can See When Elon Musk Actually Sleeps by Analyzing His Tweets, and It’s Terrifying You Can See When Elon Musk Actually Sleeps by Analyzing His Tweets, and It’s Terrifying Perhaps more than anyone else, Elon Musk has a propensity for posting through it — and it seems that includes his apparent insomnia. As flagged by politics and sports analyst Nate Silver, a graph compiled by The Economist that tracked Musk’s tweets from 2014 until November 2024 illustrated in stark detail how frequently the billionaire posts — and, since it’s not (yet) possible to tweet while sleeping, how incredibly little sleep he gets. With tiny red dots, the graph not only charted the Tesla and SpaceX owner’s prolific posting output by date, but also by time of day. As his tweeting has become more and more frequent in recent years, so too has his short window of “off” hours when he’s presumably slumbering. Unsurprisingly, those gaps in tweet times also grew shorter and more erratic after he purchased Twitter in the fall of 2022, as the graph makes clear. That was also, as The Economist noted, when he began to delve seriously into politics, posting regularly — and at time incoherently — about free speech, immigration, and what he calls the “woke mind virus.” While the average person tends to sleep approximately when the Sun is down, Musk’s hours don’t follow conventional patterns. The alleged insomniac appears, per the shrinking blank spaces in that Economist tweet chart, to mostly sleep between 3 and 10 am — on that days that he actually stops tweeting and gets to sleep at all. Those chart gaps seem to jibe with previous remarks the billionaire has made about his sleep habits in years prior, when he was still something of a curiosity in the public imagination and not the trigger-happy government hatchet man he’s become today. Speaking to the “Full Send” podcast back in 2022, for instance, Musk said he’s generally asleep by 3 am and usually gets up around 9 or 9:30 in the morning. The next year, he admitted to CNBC that getting fewer than six hours took a toll on his mental state. “I’ve tried [to sleep] less, but… even though I’m awake more hours, I get less done,” the billionaire said in May 2023. “And the brain pain level is bad if I get less than six hours.” In the years since that admission, it appears that Musk has retreated further and further into that lack of sleep that he admits is bad for him, which according to accounts given to biographer Walter Isaacson were caused by stress and would often lead to intense nausea and vomiting. Sleep depriviation is no joke. It’s been employed as torture against prisoners and can lead to severe health problems including death; getting insufficient rest, like Musk, is known to cause a grim combination of brain fog, mood swings, unpredictable behavior, paranoia and even psychotic symptoms — and that’s without getting into Musk’s drug allegations. What’s worse, Musk seems to be forcing that unhealthy “all work and no rest” mentality onto his underling at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He even reportedly moved sofa beds for his DOGE boys into the Office of Personnel Management — the same thing he did when he took over Twitter back in 2022. “DOGE is working 120 hours a week,” the unelected official posted at the beginning of February. “Our bureaucratic opponents optimistically work 40 hours a week. That is why they are losing so fast.” Unfortunately, we don’t have an updated dot matrix graph like the one from The Economist for Musk’s tweets since Trump took office again — but it’s clear that he entered this chaotic post-election ******* in a state of rage-fueled sleep deprivation, and now we’re all suffering the consequences. 13. Champions Trophy 2025 results: India beat New Zealand to set up Australia semi-final Champions Trophy 2025 results: India beat New Zealand to set up Australia semi-final Both teams were unbeaten in the group coming into this encounter, which presented a fascinating opportunity how they would fare under significant pressure for the first time. India were immediately on the back foot with Shubman Gill pinned lbw by Henry for two, skipper Rohit Sharma fell to Kyle Jamieson for 15 and the crowd was silenced by another of Phillips’ one-handed acrobatic efforts. But Axar and Shreyas, whose partnership came from 136 ******, expertly rotated the strike calmly and adjusted to the tricky surface which enabled Hardik to play more expansively in the closing overs. While it was not explosive, it was the significant partnership that New Zealand’s innings lacked as nobody was able to support Williamson, with the stand of 44 between himself and Daryl Mitchell the highest contribution. They did not collapse or lose wickets in clusters but Rohit utilised his four spinners cannily, with each offering a different challenge and none of the batters were able to settle. At 133-3 with 18 overs remaining, the match was intriguingly poised but when Tom Latham was trapped in front by Ravindra Jadeja, India had their opening and Chakravarthy burst through. Having earlier removed opener Will Young for 22, he had Phillips and Michael Bracewell lbw, Mitchell Santner was bowled for 28 and Henry was caught at mid-off for two. New Zealand will still be confident as they head back to the batter-friendly surface of Lahore, but India’s spin quartet looks like it will be the biggest challenge for any team to overcome. 15. Overwatch 2 Lied To Us, Doomfist’s Ultimate Is Not At All What You Think Overwatch 2 Lied To Us, Doomfist’s Ultimate Is Not At All What You Think Not a single Doomfist main was happy with what Blizzard did to him in Overwatch 2. He’s not the same beast from the original game; Blizzard has tweaked him and reduced his damage and mobility in favor of making him a tank. Doomfist is one of the most beloved heroes in Overwatch 2. (Image via Blizzard Entertainment) Is Doomfist washed in Overwatch 2? Not really. He’s still an incredible hero who can change the tide of the battle if played correctly. However, Blizzard hasn’t exactly been transparent about Doomfist, as his ultimate, Meteor Strike, isn’t what the developers have made us believe! Blizzard lied about Doomfist’s ultimate in Overwatch 2 Doomfist’s ultimate has fooled everyone! (Image via Blizzard Entertainment) One of the best parts about Doomfist’s kit is undoubtedly his ultimate, Meteor Strike. It’s quite a simple one, actually; Doomfist goes up in the air and comes down to hammer his enemies by dealing massive area damage. Seriously, everyone is scared for their life the second they see Doomfist ascending up the sky. However, what if we told you Blizzard was lying about Doomfist’s ultimate? Overwatch 2 makes you believe that Doomfist goes up into the sky when he performs his special move, “expect he doesn’t actually go anywhere.” As explained by the YouTube video short above, Blizzard fakes Doomfist’s ascending to the sky using character animation. During Meteor Strike, the character’s true position is on the ground the entire time. All kinds of movement during the ultimate are handled by altering his position. This leads to Doomfist’s velocity staying the same. However, if you right-click during his ultimate, Doomfist actually goes up in the sky, but as soon as Meteor Strike comes to an end, he instantly travels back to the ground. This is noticeable if you use the character’s ultimate over any death barrier, as you’ll instantly teleport and die. Doomfist’s downward movement is locked at 50 meters. So, if he’s any higher than this, he won’t be able to teleport to the ground. Due to this reason, maps with large sky boxes, such as Lijiang Tower, make it impossible for Doomfist to land mid-air after performing his ultimate. Blizzard is bringing some major changes in Overwatch 2 The Perk system in Overwatch 2 will continue to get changes. (Image via Blizzard Entertainment) With Overwatch 2 Season 15, we saw the introduction of Perks. Each hero in the game gets four unique Perks to choose from, and they can give stat boosts, passives, and even brand-new abilities to dominate the battlefield. Perks have proven to be an incredible addition to Overwatch 2, but Blizzard isn’t quite done with them. During an AMA on Reddit, Alec Dawson, the lead gameplay designer for Overwatch 2, stated that the developers are looking to freshen things up by bringing changes to existing Perks and bringing in new ones. Comment byu/ModWilliam from discussion inCompetitiveoverwatch According to Dawson, every hero in Overwatch 2 will get at least one new Perk. Around 25% – 50% of the current Perks will also be overhauled or completely replaced with something else. Blizzard wants to refine all the underwhelming Perks and give gamers new toys to play with. It’s not just that either; Blizzard is looking at the big picture when it comes to the Perks system. The company is considering modifications to XP gain rates and catch-up mechanisms. It’s great to see that Blizzard is finally making the right moves. With that said, did you know the truth about Doomfist’s ultimate in Overwatch 2? Let us know in the comments below! 22. Two found dead, person of interest in custody Two found dead, person of interest in custody Two people have been found dead in a Waukesha home, and a person of interest is in custody on separate charges, the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department said in an update Saturday. The department initially found one person dead in the residence after conducting a ******** check Friday. At the time, authorities said the location of other family members living in the home was unknown. Officials have not shared information about the individuals found dead, their age or gender. The department has also not publicly disclosed the address of the home, but social media users have pointed to the village residential subdivision near Rose Glen Elementary School, off Genesee Road just west of the West Waukesha Bypass, or Highway 18. The investigation is “ongoing and remains active,” the department said. A family member who requested the ******** check told TMJ4 that her son was found dead Friday in the home, and his wife and family dog were also found dead. Her step-grandson was missing, she said. The school district had contacted her, asking why her step-grandson hadn’t been in school. Separately, police in WaKeeney, Kansas said Saturday they took a juvenile into custody that is a person of interest in a double ********* under investigation by a Wisconsin sheriff’s office. The WaKeeney Police Department did not specify which case and if the arrest was related to the Waukesha death investigation. The juvenile was stopped after running a stop sign, and the vehicle came back stolen from Wisconsin, police said. Police learned the juvenile was wanted in Wisconsin and may have been armed with a handgun. The person of interest is being held in a juvenile detention center and awaiting extradition to Wisconsin, WaKeeney police said. 24. DR Congo accuses Rwanda of faking capture of fighters linked to genocide DR Congo accuses Rwanda of faking capture of fighters linked to genocide The army of the Democratic Republic of Congo has accused Rwanda of dressing up prisoners in military uniforms in an effort to pass them off as newly-captured rebels linked to the Rwandan genocide. It comes after Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern DR Congo said they had captured fighters from the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) – a militia founded by ethnic Hutus who took part in the 1994 genocide against Rwanda’s Tutsis. But the DR Congo military said a video allegedly showing the handover of 20 FDLR rebels at a border crossing was “faked”. M23 fighters have been advancing through eastern DR Congo since January, seizing Bukavu and Goma, the biggest city in the region. The fighting has forced about 500,000 people from their homes, worsening an already dire humanitarian crisis, according to the UN. In its statement, the Congolese military said the Rwandan video was a “faked incident in poor taste orchestrated with the sole aim of discrediting our army”. It said Rwanda had taken old FDLR prisoners and dressed them in new military uniforms to claim they had been newly captured in Goma. “This is part of the Rwandan strategy to justify the invasion of parts of the DRC’s territory,” it added. Rwanda has used the presence of FDLR forces in eastern Congo to justify its support for the M23. The country previously denied backing the M23, but it has also stressed that due to the FDLR presence in eastern Congo it has a right to take military action in eastern Congo. UN experts have previously estimated that between 3,000 and 4,000 Rwandan troops are in eastern Congo. UN experts also reported last year that the Congolese military had been using several armed groups, including the FDLR, as proxies in the fight against the M23. The genocide in Rwanda took place over 100 days in 1994. The ethnic Hutu militia involved in killing up to 800,000 people – the vast majority from the Tutsi community – fled to what is now DR Congo, some forming the FDLR. Kagame, who headed the rebel Tutsi force that ended the killing more than three decades ago, sees this “genocidal militia” as an existential threat. On Thursday, gunfire and explosions ripped through a rally held by rebel leaders in Bukavu, the second-biggest city in the east. Videos showed chaotic scenes with bodies on the streets after the crowd fled. M23 rebels seized Bukavu from government forces last month following their rapid advance through the region. The rally had earlier been addressed by Corneille Nangaa, the head of an alliance of rebel groups that includes the M23. The rebels accused DR Congo President Felix Tshisekedi’s government of orchestrating the attack. However, Tshisekedi blamed it on “a foreign army” that he said was operating in the east. The African Union and the UN have called for a ceasefire and for the rebels to withdraw from areas they now control. 25. Next-gen Snapdragon X2 chips for PCs to boost core count from 12 to 18, says report Next-gen Snapdragon X2 chips for PCs to boost core count from 12 to 18, says report Significant new details of a next-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processor for Windows PCs have been shared Germany’s WinFuture (machine translation). The big news is that the new X2 chips may come to the PC market with up to 18 Oryon V3 cores, that’s 50% more than the current generation Qualcomm chips for PCs. The extra, more powerful, cores will help ‘Snapdragon X Elite Gen 2’ chips in the high-end laptop market and in desktops, reckons the source. This isn’t the first we have heard about the generational successor to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite processors for Windows-based client PCs. Last October from the same source we heard that Qualcomm had already got test silicon for the Snapdragon X2 chips, which were codenamed Project Glymur, and featured the model number SC8480XP. Today, the deeper dive into Snapdragon X2 details also focuses on the SC8480XP. However, this time, WinFuture says it has had eyes on undisclosed import-export databases and spews forth some important tech specs. In the intro, we mentioned that the next-gen Windows PC chips from Qualcomm might move up to 18 cores, from 12. That’s not all. WinFuture has spied documents which suggest the new Qualcomm SiP (system in package) will fold in both RAM and flash storage. Specifically, the SC8480XP features 18 cores, 48GB of SK hynix RAM, and a 1TB SSD onboard. Qualcomm comes at PCs from a different heritage to traditional players like AMD and Intel, so perhaps we shouldn’t be so surprised at its different take with the SiP implementation. The source also indicates that Qualcomm is testing the next-gen processor with an all-in-one cooler and 120mm radiator. It may be trying to see what advantages a desktop could bring compared to the thermally constrained portables its chips usually find a home. As if there weren’t enough Qualcomm codenames numbers and brands mentioned already, WinFuture indicates the upcoming chips might fall under the ‘Snapdragon X2 Ultra Premium’ brand. A wry response to that might be – why no AI? Lastly, remember this Snapdragon X2 information comes via an unnamed import-export database leak, so please regard it as an indicative information nugget, at best. Our next window of opportunity for some real first-hand information on Snapdragon X2 chips is very near, though. Qualcomm will have a significant presence at MWC, and this mobile trade show kicks off in Barcelona tomorrow. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox.
