  3. A fresh report has shed a bit more light on Dragon Age: The Veilguard's famously difficult time in development, offering info on culture clashes between BioWare's different teams, and revealing that the game was re-written due to concerns about its banter being too snarky. The report, from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, goes through the whole sordid story of Veilguard's journey from in-the-works single player game, to in-the-works online thing, back to in-the-works single player thing, parts of which you're likely familiar with at this point. There's also a bunch of context as to how wider events across the studio and publisher EA influenced the game that ended up hitting shelves after a decade or so of development. 4. Path of Exile 3.26, Secrets of the Atlas, launches this week alongside the new Mercenaries of Trarthus challenge league. It's a long-awaited moment for the hardcore champion of ARPGs; the free-to-play game hasn't had a new season since Settlers of Kalguur in July 2024, with PoE 2's early-access launch taking all of developer Grinding Gear Games' attention. As it makes its grand return, I sat down with game director Mark 'Neon' Roberts to talk about the new PoE league, returning to a four-month cycle, and whether the success of Path of Exile 2 has changed how GGG approaches its predecessor. 9. Man, I love Resident Evil. The announcement of Resident Evil Requiem was a highlight for me this past weekend, and I am fiending to play it and learn more. So much of my identity as a gamer is tied to Resident Evil. Some of my earliest memories are watching my uncle play RE1 on PS1 before I ever had my own. And then for my ninth or 10th birthday, I asked for a PS1 of my own and just one game: Resident Evil 2. And I got them, and so a survival horror fan was born. Image via Capcom I didn't end up beating RE2 until many, many years later (as a kid, the scene with the zombies crashing through the glass at Kendo's Gun Shop made me turn off the console and subsequently have nightmares for weeks). But I've since tackled just about everything else in the franchise since then, and I'm always excited to play and see what's next. I consider it in my "big three" of franchises I've been a fan of since childhood, along with Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy. And so I've seen just about every twist and turn the series has gone through. From tank controls and fixed camera angles, to Resident Evil 4's revolution of the third-person shooter, to Resident Evil VII and Village bringing everything into a claustrophobic first-person perspective. Previews of Resident Evil Requiem, or RE9, hit the internet this morning (I sadly did not attend Summer Game Fest). Those who saw a demo of the game confirm how you'll be able to freely switch between first and third-person. And thank goodness. Resident Evil has gotten so good at both perspectives, with RE7 and Village creating tension in first-person, while the remakes of 2, 3, and 4 are a master-class when it comes to third-person action horror. And now, we get the best of both. Previews from outlets like PC Gamer and Insider Gaming confirm attendees were shown gameplay of new protagonist Grace Ashcroft wielding nothing but a lighter and her wits as she navigates a dark, horrifying hotel as a grotesque creature stalks her. Perfect. But that's not all. Being able to switch to third person is an excellent option for those who maybe don't love first-person perspective or get nauseous from it. But I don't think this is just an accessibility feature. I think it's a necessity for when the game ramps up the action with an assumed second protagonist that gamers have known and loved for nearly 30 years. [Hidden Content] It's only a matter of time before Capcom reveals Leon S. Kennedy is the second character in RE9. Leaks point to that, the inclusion of a return to Raccoon City hint at it, and his action hero gameplay style not seen since Resident Evil 6 will be best suited for the third-person perspective. And of course, if this is truly going to be an end of the "OG" storyline and jumping-off point for something new, Leon needs to come back. Leon is Resident Evil's most famous character, along with Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, and Claire Redfield. Leon hasn't been seen in the games since 2012's RE6, so it's high time for him to make a return as a grizzled, veteran secret agent badass to bring everything to an explosive finale. Resident Evil has succeeded as both a first-person survival horror game and a third-person action horror game, and I'm expecting this title to be a little of both. Grace is an FBI agent but likely inexperienced when it comes to combat as she's described as an analyst in the reveal trailer, so she will take center stage in the cramped hallways and P.T.-like atmosphere of the hotel. And then, eventually, our boy Leon will come in, guns blazing, roundhouse kicks flying, and killing whatever needs to be killed. And so in this case, I think Resident Evil's identity crisis is a boon to the series and an excellent thing for Requiem. I believe we will get the best of both of the franchise's playstyles in this game. So far, Capcom is just showing Grace's gameplay in a small teaser. RE9 will be playable at gamescom later this summer, so players will be able to try it themselves in Cologne, Germany. The only question for me is if the publisher will use that event to confirm Leon's return. We all know it's coming. Image via Capcom And when Leon does arrive in both marketing and the game, the choice between first or third person will become very clear for long-time fans of the franchise. Let us see our bad-**** kicking heads off and saving the day one last time. Resident Evil Requiem launches on Feb. 27, 2026. 10. It’s nigh-on impossible for developers to release a karting game without drawing constant Mario Kart comparisons at the best of times. Given that Nintendo has just released the first new entry in the series in over a decade, however, ***** finds itself in an unenviable position – at least on paper – where it may be even more difficult to steer the spotlight away from Mario and chums. In a surprising twist of fate, however, this time ***** might actually have a better chance at competing. Mario Kart World’s new change in focus has not only provided Nintendo’s series with the dose of freshness some have been hoping for, it’s also now opened a gap that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds might just be able to powerslide through. 11. FromSoftware games have a history of "unconventional" weapons and attire. In fact, compared to players with a jar on their head or the bubble-sprayer, a Wraith Calling Bell is not too strange. It's fascinating, though, to watch one player clear the big bad of Elden Ring Nightreign with the bell. YouTuber Syrobe posted a solo Recluse run yesterday where, throughout the outing, they took down Nightreign's final Nightlord Heolstor using just the Wraith Calling Bell. It's a great run to watch, and also highlights some interesting tech being discovered in Elden Ring Nightreign right now. Through the whole run, you can see Syrobe ringing and flinging the little ghosts from the bell at their foes. Now, the Wraith Calling Bell is not an imposing weapon; it's a little bell that the player rings, and then a small wraith floats out and damages the enemy. By itself, it might already seem like an uphill battle to clear bosses with this instead of some of Elden Ring's more tried-and-true armaments. Much of this victory emerged from patience, skill, and really good play from Syrobe. There are some aspects that have helped, though. Namely, the technique Syrobe shows off at the beginning of the video, allowing players to be more mobile while casting spells, or in this case, ringing bells. It's a pretty handy bit of tech for the magic casters out there that I recommend writing down and trying out later. Otherwise, Syrobe locks in and focuses on building a run that can enhance all the necessary aspects for winning. Generating solid FP recovery, picking up some solid upgrades and items, and putting together a route for solo success. Yes, keep in mind, this is a solo victory. The fascinating thing is, Syrobe is not the only one putting up great clears and exploring the power of the Wraith-Calling Bell. A few other YouTubers have been ringing the bell over this item's power, and others have posted their own clears of bosses like Heolstor. Discussion has picked up on social forums on whether this item does, in fact, need some tuning and attention from FromSoftware. "It's a reasonable early game option for caster focused people," said one user on r/Nightreign. "It's hardly any more OP as an early than exec having bleed on his weapon and absolutely chonking church and keep 'bosses' every 3 hits..." Several point out, though, that it's not necessarily a broken item, but simply a useful boost for early game casting runs where you can't find the tools you need. Whether the Bell truly needs a tuning, it does seem like it's made quite an impact on Elden Ring Nightreign over the last few days. We’ve got plenty of Nightreign tips and tricks to help you take down all the eight Nightlord Bosses, and if you’re wondering how to unlock the two locked Nightfarer Classes, check out How to Unlock the Revenant and How to Unlock the Duchess, plus How to Change Characters. While Krafton's The Sims competitor has lost a significant number of players on the platform, InZOI has still seen incredible success since its early access launch, and planned updates will likely prompt many to return to the single-player title.
