G2 Esports surprised the League of Legends community on May 14 by defeating Top Esports and disqualifying them from the Mid-Season Invitational 2024. After their victory, Caps called for Western teams to stop making excuses for their losses. In the League esports scene, North ********* and ********* teams frequently lose to ******** and Korean teams, and the so-called “gap” is widening each year. G2 is the only team that has looked competitive in the space for a while now. It's a common pattern in statistics. The more people watch, play, read, or otherwise experience something, the more varied the responses become. Then again, sometimes all the math and probability stuff doesn't apply whatsoever, and despite thousands upon thousands of players, the rating ******** stratospheric. I have a couple of takes on Nico Papalia's new RPG Athenian Rhapsody, which launched on Steam yesterday and still has a demo. The first is that it's a brighter, glitzier version of Toby Fox's Undertale that looks like it belongs on Gameboy Advance - a retro parody created in GameMaker whose turn-based combat houses many an inventive minigame, and whose writing doesn't so much break the fourth wall as moonwalk along the parapet, showering the player in *****, anime tropes and off-colour mental health advice. Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a mischievous sort. It lures you in with a first-person RPG framework that is instantly identifiable as 'The Bethesda Style', then quickly strips away all the comforts that we took for granted in those games, leaving us ******, starting afresh. Quests often require in-depth detective work, combat encounters are terrifying, and the nights are so dark that without a torch you risk breaking your leg (and you can forget about quick loading to before the incident - unless you patch the game, that is). Even fast-travel is fraught with danger, as you are forced to watch your little pawn slide across the hand-drawn map, vulnerable to random encounters. And, of course, there is no magic. This is Central Europe in the year of our Lord 1400ish; a place so religious that '**** Be With You' is the colloquial term for 'Hello'. Start spouting off about spells and wizardry around these parts and you'll be burned at the stake. It's a fascinating game to say the least - as maddening as it is, dare I say it, magical. Wayfinder, currently a free-to-play RPG developed by Airship Syndicate, is undergoing a pretty drastic change in its upcoming Echoes patch. Right now it's a live-service game with microtransactions, but soon it'll continue as a paid co-op RPG with no in-game monetisation. And that's alongside promised tweaks to how progression works, too. Huh. It's often you see paid games go free-to-play, but this is an unexpected switcheroo. Read more View the full article
Ubisoft has said its Call of Duty rival XDefiant does not feature skill-based matchmaking in its casual playlist. For years, skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) has been the hottest of topics within the Call of Duty community, with some proclaiming it ruins the experience, others saying quite the opposite. High-skilled Call of Duty players often bemoan SBMM for chucking them into what they call “sweaty” lobbies full of similarly high-skilled players. Activision has defended its use, insisting skill in matchmaking means all players (regardless of skill level) are more likely to experience wins and losses more proportionately. “We use player performance to ensure that the disparity between the most skilled player in the lobby and the least skilled player in the lobby isn’t so vast that players feel their match is a waste of time,” Activision said earlier this year. “Our data shows that when lower skill players are consistently on the losing end, they are likely to quit matches in progress or stop playing altogether,” Activision continued. “This has an effect on the player pool. A smaller player pool means wait times for matches increase and connections may not be as strong as they should be. This can compound over time to create a spiral effect. Eventually, when only high-skilled players remain because lower skilled players have quit out of frustration, the result is an ecosystem that is worse overall for everyone. “Game data indicates that having some limitations on the disparity of skill across the players in a match makes for a healthier ecosystem. We also understand that many high skill players want more variety of experience, but often feel like they only get the ‘sweatiest’ of lobbies. We have heard this feedback clearly and will continue to test and actively explore ways to mitigate this concern.” "Frankly, skill-based matchmaking means every casual game is repetitive. Ubisoft, though, clearly has a very different philosophy for its free-to-play first-person shooter, which it outlined in a blog post. “The most important thing to know is — there is no skill-based matchmaking in our casual playlist,” Ubisoft confirmed. “We believe that no SBMM is paramount to a fun and varied game experience in the long-term. Frankly, skill-based matchmaking means every casual game is repetitive — constantly repeating matches that are just as stressful and matched as ranked. We believe casual playlist should be fun and no SBMM is the way to do that. If you want that competitive every second counts go all out playstyle — you'll find our ranked mode to your liking.” Ubisoft’s stance on SBMM makes for a clear distinction between XDefiant and Call of Duty multiplayer, and is sure to go down well with a subset of ********* competitive FPS fans. Ubisoft has been keen to attract disgruntled Call of Duty fans with a number of crowd-pleasing design decisions as it works to wrestle players away from Activision’s behemoth. Indeed, XDefiant developer Ubisoft San Francisco is helmed by Mark Rubin, a former Call of Duty executive producer at Modern Warfare developer Infinity Ward. After a number of delays, XDefiant’s pre-season launches May 21 on PC via Ubisoft Connect, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. The game is not set to launch on Steam or the Epic Games Store. Ubisoft's upcoming multiplayer shooter XDefiant won't have skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in casual modes. The developer wants a "fun and varied game experience in the long-term," and believes that removing SBMM from casual playlists can help with variety, while a ranked mode can still offer a challenge. With XDefiant around the corner, this change should go down well, as it'll split players between those desiring a fair challenge, and others just looking for a quick, chaotic game. It's already been a few years since the first Mortal Kombat movie, but Warner Bros. has finally set a date for its sequel. While 2021's Mortal Kombat isn't the first live-action adaptation of the classic fighting game series, it's probably technically the best one, and it was generally received well upon its release. It also did quite well at the box office, despite being released on what was at the time called HBO Max on the same day, and a sequel was greenlit in 2022. Now, Warner Bros. has confirmed the release date of said sequel: October 24, 2025, more than four years after the first one was released. That's obviously still a good while away, so you shouldn't be expecting a trailer anytime soon, but at the very least you can put it on your calendars. Notably, the film will also be coming to Imax theatres, which certainly implies that it will be a ******* outing than the first one. Simon McQuoid is back on directorial duties for this one, with 2015's Fantastic Four and 2017's ****** Note writer Jeremy Slater penning the screenplay (those two films don't inspire confidence, but hey, never judge a writer by two not very well written films, as the saying goes). r/Games has opened a five-year time capsule containing thoughts and predictions for the future of gaming made by posters back in 2019, and it’s hard not to be impressed by how accurate some of the predictions are. The time capsule asked the Reddit community a series of questions about what the gaming landscape would look like in five years, including their predictions for the three major publishers, PC, and third-party game makers like EA. Some of the theories give credence to the idea that time travelers exist among us—while others make us question just how bad the industry has gotten over the past five years. View the full article

Ok. So, Yoko Taro and a couple of the other key people behind the NieR games have cheekily teased a new project that they're working on together, very much leaving it up in the air as to whether the thing is related to NieR or not. Seriously, the quote even has the word 'laughs' in it in brackets, who knows what they're cooking. Speaking in a Famitsu interview (thanks, Gematsu), NieR series producer Yosuke Saito was the one that did the teasing about the project, which involves him, director Yoko Taro and composer Keiichi Okabe. "I’ve been talking about wanting to do something with Yoko and Okabe for some time now," Saito said, "I’ll have something a bit more put-together to say in the not-too-distant future, so please stay tuned. It might be Nier, it might not be Nier. (Laughs.) That’s about all I can say for now." Read more View the full article
