Obsidian's first-person action-RPG Avowed is one of our 75 most anticipated games of 2024, but according to a report, it's been booted back into early 2025 to avoid "very busy *******" on Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service. Thanks, Microsoft. Do you know how long it took to cobble together that 2024 list? I still get hand cramps. Read more View the full article
The brave folks at Arrowhead Game Studios have “leaked” found footage of Helldivers 2’s game master, Joel, and it’s safe to say that Joel isn’t who we thought he was. Arrowhead one-upped the seemingly omnipotent Joel by dropping exclusive found footage on X (formerly Twitter) of Joel working on Helldivers 2 on Aug. 1. With his own office space, he has the freedom to use his ****-like powers to bend the world of Helldivers 2 at his will. But Joel isn’t a simple human. His name alone is an acronym, suggesting J.O.E.L may be something more mechanical than human. View the full article
Recent LoLdle quotes have been a pretty fun mixture of short and long League of Legends champion quotes, but today’s LoLdle quote is another epically short single-word one. With only a single word to go off, things are going to be pretty tricky—especially if you don’t know your AD carry characters too well. Who says, “Cannonball!” in LoL? The LoLdle quote on Aug. 2 is, “Cannonball!” The League champion who says this line is Tristana. View the full article
Hogwarts Legacy was a spellbinding success for Avalanche Software, with over 22 million copies sold in its first year. And, all that magic came under a cloud built by J.K. Rowling and her controversies in recent years. After that success, it’s no surprise one of the long-lasting Hogwarts Legacy fandom’s most frequently asked questions has been if there’s going to be a sequel. While the developers have confirmed a director’s cut edition is currently in the works, it now appears players may be getting their wishes granted: A newly-spotted Avalanche Software job listing (thanks GameRant) suggests a Hogwarts Legacy sequel is on the way. Thank your own personal deity—possibly Melinoë—it's Friday! Depending on where you are, there's a fair-to-certain chance that it's going to be a mighty chilly weekend, so you'd best get some indoor entertainment sorted. Personally, I'd go make a quick (and free and easily cancellable) 30 day Amazon Prime Gaming account to secure the many free games on offer. Otherwise, there's my usual list of Cheap Stuff Worth Getting ***** out below. Meanwhile, in retro news, I'm commemorating the 43rd birthday of a true arcade cab classic, Donkey Kong. This one, I cannot confess to playing at launch—I wasn't old enough to stand, or not ***** myself, let alone grip a stick and go leaping/hammering barrels to save Pauline. To say gamers were taken by Shigeru Miyamoto's brilliantly designed platformer is quite the understatement; that OG Donkey Kong spawned a franchise of ports, spin-offs, and sequels that has endured to this very day. The last revenue estimate we have for the DK empire? 4.4 billion dollars (A$6.7bn). Which is bananas. This Day in Gaming Aussie birthdays for notable games. - Donkey Kong (ARC) 1981. Diablo 4 Season Five, the Season of the Infernal Hordes, will be the final season before the Vessel of Hatred expansion drops in October. Players hope that with all the significant changes from Season Four and the ones coming in Season Five, Diablo 4 will feel complete. It’s no secret that since Diablo 4 launched in mid-2023 the Blizzard action RPG has suffered several less-than-specular updates and seasons. Players went through long phases where they hated looting and many even requested refunds so they could buy Baldur’s Gate 3 during the darker days. Those struggles seem to be behind the mega-sequel though, with ecstatic players now feeling like Diablo 4 on the verge of being “finished” after Season Four’s base content updates and Season Five’s big promises. Though Stardew Valley is often one of the best-recognized cozy games, but those who have worked their way through the popular farming sim know there are some horrors lurking within the game specifically in the various caves and mines. Though mining and combat are essential parts of the gameplay experience (and players will have to max them out if they want to access the new mastery system in place), some of the monsters waiting in the various levels of the mines, Skull Cavern, and the Volcano Dungeon are no joke. It's the biggest and the greatest game show the world has ever known! Contestants from all over the world are honored to work their way up the ranks, dueling in a ruthless hybrid card/board game for dominance in an attempt to go all the way, using every tactic, trick, and special ability they can insert into their deck to go head-to-head with the reigning champion of Battle Train. Even the Supreme President Conductor can lose and be replaced by a skilled contestant, and just because it hasn't happened in thirty years doesn't mean it's impossible, no matter what he might say to the contrary. Logan Paul has walked back his statement about Imane Khelif, admitting he “might be guilty” of disseminating misinformation about the boxer. He maintains his beliefs around biology in sports though, stating “if you disagree you’re a ***** *****.” Paul’s declaration came in response to the pushback he faced over an earlier claim around boxing at the Olympics. In an Aug. 1 post, Paul misgendered boxer Imane Khelif, referring to her as a man who was “allowed to beat up a woman on a global stage.” After facing backlash over his correction, Paul has deleted the original tweet. Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree players looking to speedrun the DLC or simply avoid some of the expansion's more punishing areas should pay attention to this massive exploit. When it comes to speedrunning, one should never underestimate the community given how talented many runners are at discovering strange secrets and glitches that allow them to skip whole chunks of a game. Elden Ring is one such game that's so massive that anyone looking to complete it in as brief a time as possible needs to constantly be on the lookout for new routes. View the full article
Apex Legends Season 22 is just around the corner, and Respawn has just dropped some early details about what fans can expect. Of course, the headline act is its glorious-looking, neon-drenched new map called E-District, but the one new addition that has really caught my eye is the addition of Revival. This new mechanic aims to give eliminated players a second chance without the need for Respawn Beacons, and it essentially brings the vibes from Call of Duty Warzone's most hectic (and in my opinion, best) game mode to Apex Legends. Pour one out for World of Warcraft characters who are still in the last place you logged out. They could be on a mountain in the Dragon Isles, standing in a spaceship on Argus, or neatly tucked away in the Lion's Pride inn in Goldshire. No matter where they are, they don't know you're not planning on coming back. They'll wait eternally for you to make your return, standing guard on your gear and your poorly chosen transmog from a decade ago. If you did want to check them out again, however, Blizzard has just announced a free weekend, which means you can log in to your abandoned WoW characters without a subscription.
