  9. As they do pretty regularly, the Helldivers 2 community's managed to leave coming out on top in the latest Major Order to a big last minute push - which may or may not succeed in time. In a move that probably hasn't helped this heroic mass charge come together, Arrowhead's now finally decided to put out a video showing us its mysterious game master Joel, oh sorry, J.O.E.L. First, how's the MO going as of writing? Well, Super Earth forces have managed to wrestle control of four out ouf the five planets they need to grab in order to take back the momentum from the Automatons and their new orbital cannons. Wasat, Vega Bay, Varylia 5, and Ustotu are all in Super Earth's mitts, leaving just Wezen. The problem? Well, Wezen currently sits at only 25.82% liberation percentage, and there's just under 7 and a half hours left on the MO clock. At the current pace, Wezen will fall, but only once that deadline's passed. So, unless the big final push some of the players on Reddit who haven't already given up are trying to spur into action gains some serious steam over the next few hours, an L could be on the cards this time around. 13. With Valorant, Riot set out to integrate a bit of hero shooter into the Counter Strike template and made it a little more accessible than CS in the process. Now Mountaintop Studios, a new studio whose ranks include ex-Bungie and Respawn devs, have chucked themselves into the tactical FPS gauntlet with Spectre Divide. Made with input from former CS pro and streamer Shroud, it looks a bit like a mix of CS and Valorant, but has a big gimmick that sets it apart from the two: you can swap between two bodies. I… am cautiously optimistic? I think? Read more View the full article

  15. This week's mass layoffs at Destiny studio Bungie were planned out months ago, former employees have told journalist Stephen Totilo at Game File (paywalled). According to Totilo, Bungie leadership "overstated their studio’s financial prospects to Sony" after the latter bought Bungie in 2022 for $3.6 billion. The latest cuts were necessary to prevent continued losses, says the report, after Bungie missed Sony’s targets following the release of last year’s Lightfall. Read more View the full article

  21. It reportedly didn't matter whether Destiny 2's The Final Shape expansion delivered a "blockbuster performance", Bungie's latest layoffs were in the works prior to its release and "couldn't be avoided" even if the much-hyped bit of DLC, which garnered a positive reception, had been a runaway commercial success. This is according to a report from Stephen Totilo's Game File, which cites a number of sources having stated that this week's round of cuts were already planned as of early 2024. Said cuts saw 220 Bungie staff be ***** off and more have their roles shifted over into both Sony Interactive Entertainment and a new PlayStation studio which is taking on development of a Bungie "incubation project". The report goes on to quote one anonymous former Bungie worker as asserting that if the studio hadn't been acquired by Sony back in 2022, the "alternate history is insolvency." It's claimed that Bungie has repeatedly missed the financial targets set out by Sony, leading its management to have to conclude last year - seemingly with the studio's autonomy on the line - that it would "make deep cuts to show Sony's executives that it was taking its finances seriously".
