****** Tale 2, a follow-up to the 2020 RPG from Koei Tecmo, was just announced today at the latest Nintendo Direct. In need of a new anime RPG? ****** Tale 2 is the one for you then, as Koei Tecmo just announced the sequel today during the latest Nintendo Direct. The game is set to arrive this winter, according to the first trailer, but there isn't much more of a release date than that. It did promise to let you "relive the climactic Alvarez Empire arc" from the ****** Tale anime, which will take you up to the ending of the series. You can use different kinds of magic depending on who's in your party, of course compromising various members of Team Natsu. The combat is described as real-time action, though the trailer didn't show it off too much. For now, you'll just have to wait to hear more about the upcoming RPG. Read more View the full article
Donkey Kong Returns...returns! Shown off during the Nintendo Direct a few minutes ago, Donkey Kong Returns HD has just been announced, bringing the beloved 2D paltformer to the Nintendo Switch with a new coat of paint. The game is set to launch on January 16, 2025. You can watch the trailer yourself down below, which shows many of the classic stages and setpieces from the original game in quick succession. If you've not seen or played a Donkey Kong game before, it does a godo job of establishing what the whole deal is about. This is an especially exciting HD re-release as the original Donkey Kong Returns has been largely trapped on the Nintendo Wii since its release. As such, it coming to modern platforms is sweet news for those eager to try out its 80-ish levels, or hop in with a friend with the game's two-player co-op. Read more View the full article

With Shadow Of The Erdtree about to launch this week, From Software president Hidetaka Miyazaki has been doing a round of interviews discussing next steps for the venerated action-RPG developer, or at least, hinting at them in the manner of a Dark Souls NPC suggesting that you might want to have a poke around New Anor Londo. In one such chat, Miyazaki strays perilously close to discussing the "themes or core elements" of whatever game or games FromSoftware are working on post-Elden Ring, commenting that he has been inspired, albeit perhaps in a "short-term way", by the experience of having a daughter. Mario & Luigi Brotherhood has just been announced during the Nintendo Direct. An RPG set in the Mario universe, you'll be able to take control of both the brothers yet again when the game launches on the Nintendo Switch on Nintendo 7, 2024. This was announced via a gameplay trailer which you can watch yourself below. It kicked off the Nintendo Direct this time around, setting the tone for a reveal-packed show. This marks the first entry in the Mario & Luigi series in over nine years, and will follow the pair's seafaring adventures across the world in a cute but distinct aesthetic that captures both the colour and tone of the series perfectly. The game even has "evolved bro moves" included, including one where the duo kick a shell to eachother before Mario punts a flaming shell shot. It looks pretty cool! Read more View the full article
Enlarge (credit: Bandai) [/url] {LINK REMOVED}Elden Ring was my first leap into FromSoftware titles (and Dark-Souls-like games generally), and I fell in deep. Over more than 200 hours, I ate up the cryptic lore, learned lots of timings, and came to appreciate the feeling of achievement through perseverance. Months ago, in preparation for Elden Ring's expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree (also on PlayStation and Xbox, arriving June 21), I ditched the save file with which I had beaten the game and started over. I wanted to try out big swords and magic casting. I wanted to try a few new side quests. And I wanted to have a fresh experience with the game before Shadow arrived. I have had a very fresh experience, in that this DLC has made me feel like I'm still in the first hour of my first game. Reader, this expansion is mopping the floor with me. It looked at my resume, which has "Elden Lord" as its most recent job title, and has tossed it into the slush pile. If you're wondering whether Shadow would, like Elden Ring, provide a different kind of challenge and offer, like the base game, easier paths for Souls newcomer: No, not really. At least not until you're already far along. This DLC is for people who beat Elden Ring, or all but beat it, and want capital-M More. Read 15 remaining paragraphs | Comments View the full article

It Follows star Maika Monroe has teased the upcoming sequel They Follow, saying it's "just ******* and darker and more f**ked up." The original It Follows was now released over a decade ago, and it's pretty easy to call it a modern horror classic. It's timeless, purposely so, and everyone that has seen it hasn't been able to get that clam shell screen reader out of their heads since it was released. Surprisingly, though, director David Robert Mitchell announced last October that a sequel, titled They Follow, was in the works, with the star of the first film Maika Monroe set to return. It felt like an odd choice, especially after all this time, but also because the film ended so purposefully ambiguous. In a recent interview with Collider, Monroe spoke about the film, assuring everyone that it's happening for a good reason. "But as you know with the first film, I'm not taking any credit in this, David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant," Monroe said. "The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn't ever make a sequel if he didn't think it was going to top it . He's very specific, turns down so many… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I'm like, 'Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?' And I read it, and it's just so f**king good. It's so good. I'm so excited. I think where you'll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what's expected, but it's so cool. It's just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just ******* and darker and more ******* up . Reading it was the craziest thing ever." Read more View the full article
The excitement of another Final Fantasy XIV expansion has the community on the edge of its seats as we’re less than two weeks away from the arrival of Dawntrail. But before this launch, the game’s developer addressed some looming issues that could occur for weeks following the launch: login queues. The Final Fantasy XIV team has thoroughly explained how they plan to address these issues in an official statement. They were a significant problem when the previous expansion, Endwalker, was released in December 2021, and the issues continued throughout early 2022. The issues were so bad that at one point, Final Fantasy XIV was unavailable to purchase from multiple storefronts as new players could not log into the game. The team and the community are hopeful these problems won’t be nearly as bad for Dawntrail. View the full article

Fancy playing through Baldur's Gate 3's first act on a notebook from 1983? Me neither, but Alex Bowen over on YouTube has created an incredible demake of the popular RPG, and managed to get working on one of the world's first commercially successful laptops, the Tandy TRS-80 Model 100. While Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't demand the best graphics card in its system requirements, it was never going to work on hardware from the 1980s, so this project required quite a bit of creativity from Bowen, who posted a video breaking down the project in great detail. Elden Ring creator and FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki has said he won't allow the devastating video game industry layoffs to affect his studio as long as he's in charge. Speaking to PC Gamer, Miyazaki said he can't 100% guarantee FromSoftware will be safe from job losses — which have so far seen thousands lose their jobs across the likes of Embracer Group, Microsoft, and Sony — but wouldn't allow it "as long as this company is [his] responsibility." FromSoftware is owned by ********* organization Kadokawa Corporation so the decision isn't wholly in Miyazaki's hands, however. Microsoft, for example, shut down Redfall developer Arkane Austin alongside Hi-Fi Rush and Ghostwire Tokyo developer Tango Gameworks in May 2024 despite posting a 17% increase in revenue and $21.9 billion in profit in its latest financial earnings report. As long as this company is my responsibility, that's something I would not let happen. But Miyazaki appeared confident Kadokawa shares his opinion on layoffs. "Speaking to myself and this company, I want to say that this is not something I would wish on the staff at FromSoftware in a million years," he said. "I'm pretty sure our parent company Kadokawa understands that and shares that view." He then referenced former Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who famously took a pay cut himself when profits were down instead of resorting to layoffs. "I sincerely doubt employees who ***** that they may be ***** off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world," Iwata said at the time. Miyazaki echoed this statement. "I think it was the old ex-president of Nintendo, Iwata, who said 'people who are afraid of losing their jobs are afraid of making good things.' I'm paraphrasing that, but I totally share this view," he said. "I think it's true, and I think the people at Kadokawa, our parent company, understand that I hold this view very strongly. While we can't say 100% — we can't say with complete certainty what the future's going to hold for From and Kadokawa — at least as long as this company is my responsibility, that's something I would not let happen. So hopefully our players and our fans can take a little bit of assurance from that." Miyazaki's comments come just as Embracer shut down Alone in the Dark developer Pieces Interactive after the game ******* to meet expectations. Pieces Interactive joins Free ******** Design, Onoma, and Volition Games as studios closed by Embracer in the last year amid layoffs affecting thousands of employees. Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm has delayed the launch of Kameo character Ferra and announced the release date of the next DLC character, Takeda. Ferra, the small fighter who sat atop the hulking Torr as part of the combined Ferra & Torr character from Mortal Kombat X, was set to hit Mortal Kombat 1 in Kameo form later in June, but now launches alongside Takeda's early access release on July 23. In a tweet, NetherRealm said it needed “a bit more time to make sure she can assist to the best of her abilities,” and thanked players for their patience. Before we can release Ferra as our next Kameo Fighter, we need a bit more time to make sure she can assist to the best of her abilities. Ferra will now be available alongside Takeda's early access release on July 23. We thank you for your patience and will keep you updated. — Mortal Kombat 1 (@MortalKombat) June 17, 2024 July's launch of Ferra and Takeda completes Mortal Kombat 1’s first Kombat Pack, which includes the Jean-Claude Van Damme character skin for Johnny Cage and six playable DLC characters: Omni-Man from the Invincible franchise, Quan Chi, Peacemaker from the DC Universe, Ermac, Homelander from The Boys, and Takeda Takahashi, as well as five DLC Kameo fighters: Ferra, Janet Cage, Khameleon, Mavado, and Tremor. Thoughts now turn to what follows for Mortal Kombat 1 during its second year, with NetherRealm yet to announce DLC plans. Earlier this month, a prominent Mortal Kombat 1 dataminer uncovered evidence to suggest that Ghostface from the Scream franchise is a future DLC character. Ghostface was assumed to be a part of the inevitable Kombat Pack 2, but the character's release may be tied up with the ongoing issues surrounding the next movie in the series, Scream 7. NetherRealm development chief Ed Boon has confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 will get story DLC and “a big surprise after that.” Meanwhile, the Mortal Kombat 2 movie is due out October 24, 2025.
