Starfield's Shattered Space DLC might fix the biggest issue with the base game's combat. Due for release on September 30, 2024, Shattered Space will be the first DLC for Starfield. It's expected to address many of the game's biggest flaws, including the lack of handcrafted environments and the unsolved mysteries of House Va'ruun. However, these could all be minor tweaks in comparison to Starfield's biggest combat change. View the full article

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has asked fans to please not make "offensive or inappropriate" mods upon the game's PC release tomorrow, September 17. Yoshida wouldn't comment on any specific mods he wants to see in Final Fantasy 16 in an interview with PC Gamer, though made clear what he doesn't want to see. "If we said, 'it'd be great if someone made X, Y, Z,' it might come across as a request, so I'll avoid mentioning any specifics here," Yoshida said. "The only thing I will say is that we definitely don't want to see anything offensive or inappropriate, so please don't make or install anything like that." Mods allow players to create custom content for games, often resulting in incredibly useful gameplay changes such as the ability to play Elden Ring with friends seamlessly, or major additions such as an entire new expansion for Fallout 4 or the ability to play as custom characters in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Due to the nature of the internet, however, many mods are also, as Yoshida put it, "offensive or inappropriate." While cheating is one thing, fellow publisher Capcom expressed concern in November 2023 that "there are a number of mods that are offensive to public order and morals" which cause damage to the property itself. Final Fantasy 16 arrives on PC after lots of back and forth from developer Square Enix. The original reveal trailer claimed blatantly the game is "also available on PC," and while Square Enix mysteriously scrapped this claim soon after, its status as a PlayStation 5 exclusive was brought into question again in November 2022 when an advertisement for the PS5's DualSense controller said Final Fantasy 16 would only be a "PS5 exclusive for six months." Yoshida himself then denied a PC version existed at all. "Nobody said a word about a PC version releasing," he said, incorrectly. "Why is it like a PC version is releasing six months later? Don't worry about that, buy a PS5. Sorry, I went overboard. We did our best, so please look forward to it." Yoshida then admitted in February 2023 it's true that "Final Fantasy 16 is a six-month limited time exclusive on the PS5" but "the PC version will not come out in half a year." This is because the team wouldn't be able to start development until the PS5 version launched in June that year. Finally, however, the role-playing game was announced for PC in August 2024, with the aforementioned September 17 release date. This came after Final Fantasy 16 ******* to meet the expectations of Square Enix alongside other PlayStation exclusives including Foamstars and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, prompting a shift to an aggressive multiplatform strategy going forward. Yoshida made clear in August that Square Enix would be doubling down on Xbox releases following this change in strategy, while Final Fantasy 16 director Hiroshi Takai said future games in the franchise would likely come to PC on launch. In our 9/10 review of the PC version, IGN said: "Final Fantasy 16 is certainly a departure from what fans may expect out of a Final Fantasy game, but its excellent story, characters, and world building are right up there with the best the series has to offer." Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. View the full article
UFO 50[/i]."> Enlarge / Just some of the inventive character designs included in UFO 50. (credit: Mossmouth) [/url]If you've spent any time with retro gaming emulators, you're likely familiar with the joy of browsing through a long list of (legally obtained) ROMs and feeling overwhelmed at a wide range of titles you've never even heard of. Picking randomly through such a game list is like wandering through a foreign country, searching for hidden jewels among all the shovelware in the bewildering and wildly imaginative early video game history. UFO 50 captures that feeling perfectly, combining the freewheeling inventiveness of old-school game design with modern refinements and more consistent baseline quality bred over the ensuing decades. The result is an extremely playable love letter to the gaming history that will charm even the most jaded retro game fan. A loving homage UFO 50 presents itself as a collection of 50 dusty game cartridges made by UFO Soft, a fictional developer that operated from 1982 to 1989. Working through the company's catalog, you'll see evolution in graphics, music, and gameplay design that mirror the ever-changing gaming market of the real-world '80s. You'll also see the same characters, motifs, and credited "developers" appearing over and over again, building a convincing world behind the games themselves. The individual games in UFO 50 definitely wear their influences on their sleeves, with countless, almost overt homages to specific '80s arcade and console games. But there isn't a single title here that I'd consider a simple clone or knock-off of an old gaming concept; each sub-game brings its own twist or novel idea that makes it feel new. AMD is reportedly already lined up to make the CPU in the Sony PlayStation 6, after beating Intel to the contract, according to the latest reports. Thanks to its ability to integrate its CPU cores and Radeon GPU cores into the same silicon, AMD has long been a firm favorite among console makers, with its chips used in the PS4, PS5, and PS5 Pro, as well as the Xbox Series X, and Xbox One, among others. However, Intel was apparently working hard to win the contract to make the chip in the Sony PS5's so-far-unannounced successor, which is expected to be called the PS6. AMD makes the best gaming CPU on the PC right now, in the form of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and while the company's GPU tech is lagging behind that of Nvidia at the moment when it comes to ray tracing, AMD has a longer pedigree than Intel when it comes to making fully-fledged gaming GPUs. In theory, vampires and immersive sims go together as naturally as bats and caves. Immersive sims tend to involve a balance of stealth, acrobatics, raw strength and crafty manipulation, and vampires are celebrated for all of these things. Despite this, actual vampire-themed immersive sims are rare. My list starts with Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines... and sort of ends there. In a devastating betrayal, Arkane Austin's Redfall wasn't an immersive sim but an open world co-op shooter (a not very good one). The much-delayed Bloodlines 2 was recently downgraded from immersive sim to RPG by new developers The ******** Room. Arkane Lyon's Blade adaptation seems promising, but it's a ways off. Here to paper over the immersive vamping gap in the market is Byte Barrel's Trust, "a new first-person shooter with immersive sim elements". It takes place in a world where the vampires are hunted for their blood, which has become an everyday human energy source, used for everything from car batteries to streetlights. The irony! I feel like, in the circumstances, the ideal solution would be for humans to let vampires ***** their blood in return for vampires letting humans use their blood for electricity, but that wouldn't make for a very thrilling shooter. Anyway, here's the trailer. Read more View the full article

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge What’s next after the PS5 Pro? A report from Reuters focuses on Sony’s plans beyond this fall’s new $700 system, saying that the battle to win a contract for the chip powering a future PlayStation 6 came down to AMD vs. Intel, with others like Broadcom eliminated earlier, with AMD eventually winning out. According to Reuters, since AMD makes the chip in the PS5 and PS5 Pro, maintaining backwards compatibility in a possible move was part of “months” of discussions in 2022 between executives and engineers at Sony and Intel. However, Intel’s bid was blocked because they couldn’t agree on how much profit Intel would make from each chip it would design as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) handled the manufacturing process.
