  1. Extraction games are all the rage at the moment - it appears battle royales have now fully passed the 'multiplayer game trend' baton over now. Existing stalwarts like Hunt Showdown and Escape From Tarkov are now staring at a swathe of new challengers, and it seems like there are new reveals, updates, betas, and launches occurring on a weekly basis right now. However, according to the Steam wishlist charts at least, it's Team *****'s Delta Force that is leading the chasing pack - in fact, the milsim FPS has now been wishlisted over 2.1 million times. 2. Steam has begun displaying a new notice in its shopping cart, explicitly clarifying the transaction: "A purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam." 3. Image: The Verge Valve is now explicitly disclosing that you don’t own the games you buy from its Steam online store. The company has added a note on the payment checkout screen stating that “a purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam,” as reported earlier by Engadget. We confirmed the message appears in the Steam desktop app, but we haven’t seen it in the mobile app yet. Some Steam users noticed the disclosure go live earlier this week and posted their findings on Reddit. Image: Steam My colleague Sean is not actually buying this yet, he says he has to play Persona 3 first. Why? Probably, a new law. California has a law going into effect next year that’ll require digital storefronts like Valve’s... Continue reading… View the full article

  5. Destiny 2 kicked off its dungeon cycle for this year with Vesper’s Host, a dungeon with a bunch of loot to chase. As usual, different drops come from different encounters, so a loot table comes in handy. This dungeon takes guardians to the Vesper Station, a derelict BrayTech facility. Some of the aesthetic is clearly from old BrayTech, with Augments seen in Deep Stone Crypt and later ported to Operation: Seraph’s Shield. If you’re a bit unfamiliar with Scanner, Operator, and Suppressor, it’s time to shake off that rust, since they play an important part. View the full article

  10. Illustration: The Verge Microsoft is planning to support the streaming of Xbox game libraries next month. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the company is getting ready to test the ability to stream games that you own that aren’t part of the existing Xbox Game Pass library. As part of a long-running project known as Project Lapland inside Microsoft, the software giant has been readying its Xbox Cloud Gaming servers to be able to support streaming thousands of games. I’m told Microsoft will first test its new Xbox Cloud Gaming streaming capabilities with Xbox Insiders in November, before expanding them to more Xbox users. 14. The concept of actually owning anything you purchase on a digital storefront like Steam has always been hazy, with many of us amassing vast libraries that we may not actually "own" in any meaningful sense. Now, Valve has updated the messaging you receive when making a purchase on its platform to clarify matters, making it clear that you are only buying a license for a product - you don't own the product itself. 15. A few years ago, the idea of running PC games on a Mac, in Linux, or on Arm processors would have been laughable. But the developers behind Asahi Linux—the independent project that is getting Linux working on Apple Silicon Macs—have managed to do all three of these things at once. The feat brings together a perfect storm of open source projects, according to Asahi Linux GPU lead Alyssa Rosenzweig: the FEX project to translate x86 CPU code to Arm, the Wine project to get Windows binaries running on Linux, DXVK and the Proton project to translate DirectX 12 API calls into Vulkan API calls, and of course the Asahi project's Vulkan-conformant driver for Apple's graphics hardware. Games are technically run inside a virtual machine because of differences in how Apple Silicon and x86 systems address memory—Apple's systems use 16 KB memory pages, while x86 systems use 4 KB pages, something that causes issues for Asahi and some other Arm Linux distros on a regular basis and a gap that the VM bridges. 16. The ***** comes from the ******** video platform Bilibili, where someone shared a Cinebench R23 benchmark run supposedly from the unannounced 9800X3D chip. The most eye-catching specification is its 4.7GHz base clock, which would be a staggering 900MHz higher than the standard Ryzen 7 9700X's 3.8GHz base frequency. 17. There comes a point in most experienced Steam shoppers' lives where they wonder what would happen if their account was canceled or stolen, or perhaps they just stopped breathing. It's scary to think about how many games in your backlog will never get played; scarier, still, to think about how you don't, in most real senses of the word, own any of them. Now Valve, seemingly working to comply with a new California law targeting "false advertising" of "digital goods," has added language to its checkout page to confirm that thinking. "A purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam," the Steam cart now tells its customers, with a link to the Steam Subscriber Agreement further below. California's AB2426 law, signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom Sept. 26, excludes subscription-only services, free games, and digital goods that offer "permanent offline download to an external storage source to be used without a connection to the internet." Otherwise, sellers of digital goods cannot use the terms "buy, purchase," or related terms that would "confer an unrestricted ownership interest in the digital good." And they must explain, conspicuously, in plain language, that "the digital good is a license" and link to terms and conditions. Read full article Comments View the full article

While Helldivers 2 is set for some big upgrades, including some major balancing fixes, Arrowhead Game Studios doesn't want to release it over a weekend, when player counts are at their weekly peak. 19. Atlus' new JRPG, Metaphor: ReFantazio, looks set to be 2024's JRPG of the year, if not game of the year, at least to those more inclined to sink hundreds of hours into a single story-driven adventure. What makes it so unique, at least in today's gaming culture, is that it's not a sequel, reboot, or remaster, but an entirely original IP set in an original world featuring original characters. It's a breath of fresh air, but more importantly, it's a game with a huge leg up over Atlus' other beloved games, the Persona series. View the full article

Atlus' rather brilliant turn-based JRPG boasts a lovable cast of followers who support you on your journey to become the king of Euchronia. 25. "Post Void is a masterpiece of compulsive motion and hypnotic, irresistible sounds," wrote Sin of YCJY Games's "orgiastic" shooter. "It does something to my brain that I've never experienced before." The developer's just-announced Keep Driving seems a lot less inclined to scramble your grey matter, though it's partial to the old rose-tinted goggles. It's a droll, backward-glancing and slightly ominous 2D management RPG in which you drive to a music festival on the other side of the country. Along the way, you will pick up hitchhikers, upgrade your car, fill your boot with random junk, and participate in turn-based, non-lethal "combat" with dawdling children and obstinate tractors. Here's a trailer. Read more View the full article
