  3. Despite war being an eternal focus in gaming, tank games are relatively thin on the ground. While there are titles like World of Tanks, War Thunder, Enlisted, and technically the Battlefield series, they tend to be the exception rather than the rule. Thankfully Armored Warfare also exists, a free MMO that's dripping with in-depth tank action. Now, that action has just ramped up considerably, as a brand new endgame mode has arrived filled with fresh rewards and tough challenges. Read the rest of the story... 5. EA is planning to make significant changes to Apex Legends designed to address a decline in player engagement and missed revenue targets. “We do have a moment right now where we are managing the current trajectory of the business,” CEO Andrew Wilson acknowledged during the company’s second quarter earnings call on Tuesday. “But we believe by virtue of the strength of the brand, the size of the global community, the position we hold in the top tier of these free-to-play live service games, that we’ll be able to return that to growth in the business side over the course of time.” Read More... 6. I never thought I'd tire of seeing new FPS games get announced, but I'm starting to get a bit weary of the stream of ********* shooters with extraction gameplay elements. So, I should be rolling my eyes at the sight of Active Matter. However, I'm not. This eerie, sci-fi twist on games like Escape From Tarkov actually looks super interesting - and what's more, there's a closed beta test you can sign up for right now. Read the rest of the story... 8. Apex Legends is now five years old, and still going strong. The game is currently headed toward season 23 in early November, and while its player numbers aren't quite at the heights they used to be, the hero shooter still seems to be doing all right for itself. Some companies might be thinking right about now as to how they can refresh and replenish that playerbase with a sequel, but EA CEO Andrew Wilson doesn't seem interested. During today's Q2 earnings call, Wilson stated in answer to an investor question that large live service games such as Apex that reach massive audiences must continue to creatively innovate and update, or they risk losing that coveted top spot. For that reason, he continued, EA recognizes a "need for meaningful systematic innovation that fundamentally changes the way the game plays," and said that this is something the teams are actively working on. As a follow up, someone else asked him that as the teams are working on that "systematic rethink of Apex," if they're considering doing "a whole studs-up rebuild" on something like an "Apex 2.0", as opposed to incremental change over time. Wilson's answer? No. Here's his response in full: Typically, what we have seen in the context of live service-driven games at scale is the 'version two' thing has almost never been as successful as the 'version one' thing. And so actually the objective right now is to ensure that we are continuing to support the global playerbase that we have, and deliver them new, innovative, creative content on a season-by-season basis, as well as build these other things, but build them in a way that players do not have to give up the progress that they've made or the investment that they've put into the existing ecosystem. Anytime we cause a global player community to have to choose between the investments they've made to date and future innovation and creativity, that's never a good place to put our community in. Our objective will be to continue to innovate in the core experience...and then build additional opportunities for engagement in different modalities of play beyond what the current core mechanic delivers. And we think we can do those two things together, and we don't believe we have to separate the experience in order to do so. So, per Wilson, no Apex 2.0 for the foreseeable future, but there is some sort of "systemic innovation" on the horizon that could shake-up Apex Legends in a big way. The good news is that Wilson's comments seem to jive with what the developers want too. Last year, Respawn's game director Steve Ferreira told GameSpot that the studio doesn't want to ever put the game in a position where the only option is to shut the whole thing down and launch Apex Legends 2, calling the idea an "anti-vision." EA reported a record Q2 today, with $2.08 billion in net bookings, and The Sims 4 gaining 15 million players in 2024. Apex Legends recently adjusted how it discloses loot box reward odds to players, and is gearing up for the start of Season 23 on November 5. Rebekah Valentine is a senior reporter for IGN. 9. EA CEO Andrew Wilson says BioWare has returned to its strengths with the impending release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, praising its reviews while predicting that it has "breakout potential" thanks to what he characterizes as limited competition. Speaking with investors in EA's quarterly earnings call, Wilson reflected on some of BioWare's troubled recent history, which has been defined in part by the ******** of Anthem — a multiplayer game Wilson described as "very, very different than something that would be known as a BioWare game." In the wake of Anthem, Wilson said a "big shift happened" that saw "BioWare really returning to BioWare-type games; really returning to BioWare's strengths." "BioWare has rallied around what made BioWare a fan-favorite studio and a fan-favorite brand and the types of games they make – incredibly rich worlds, incredibly nuanced characters, really powerful and compelling stories with comaraderie and friendships and relationships, and decisions that matter in the context of gameplay," Wilson said. "And I think it’s been that return to what made BioWare great and giving the studio time to deliver against what makes BioWare great in the context of the Dragon Age world is what amounts to Dragon Age: The Veilguard." BioWare has rallied around what made BioWare a fan-favorite studio and a fan-favorite brand and the types of games they make... Wilson's comments come in the context of what has been reported to be a sometimes fraught relationship with EA. Rumors over the years have suggested that BioWare has been pressured to match the success of highly profitable modes like Ultimate Team, though the studio is adamant in saying that EA has been supportive of the studio. Our report on how BioWare managed to get Dragon Age: The Veilguard to the finish line after a tumultuous decade details some of the challenges that the studio has faced over the years. Looking ahead to The Veilguard's release, Wilson praised its solid reviews and suggested that it has "breakout potential" thanks to BioWare's existing fanbase and the relatively clear release calendar. "We're going into a market with limited competition for this category of game given some of the moves that has happened across the broader industry," Wilson said, likely referring to Ubisoft's decision to delay *********'s Creed Shadows into 2025. Elsewhere, EA reported record earnings for its second quarter while adding around 15 million new players to The Sims 4 in 2024, and suggested that it isn't interested in making Apex Legends 2. Dragon Age: The Veilguard, for its part, releases October 31. Kat Bailey is IGN's News Director as well as co-host of Nintendo Voice Chat. Have a tip? Send her a DM at @the_katbot. 10. Stardew Valley may be viewed as the pinnacle of cozy gaming, but even creator ConcernedApe will attest to the fact that completing every achievement is a mammoth challenge. The PC version of the beloved Farming RPG has 49 achievements that range from simple tasks like crafting 15 different items to tests of endurance like reaching Level 10 in every skill. Yet one of the most brutally difficult is Fector's Challenge, which is so tough that even ConcernedApe has struggled with it for years. View the full article
  11. It's been a while since I could say that a game legitimately got much worse once it exited beta on PC for its full launch for consoles, but the Undisputed 1.0 launch has been worse than underwhelming for me; it's become downright unplayable. While I've enjoyed the updates to the career mode, the online multiplayer portion of the title something that I used to enjoy, has devolved into something that doesn't resemble the Sweet Science anymore. 16. Some games are compelling through their art styles and others grab attention with unique mechanics. Strategy 4X Songs of Silence manages to do both, with hand-painted Art Nouveau visuals that recalls titles like Wildermyth or Nine Sols combined with 4X strategy that brings to mind Endless Legend or Age of Wonders 4. My particular pick for what Songs of Silence reminds me of most is Master of Magic, at least when you get into its autobattler combat with vast armies facing off against each other. After a few months of early access it's almost ready to make its full appearance on the scene, and you won't have to wait too long to play the final release. Read the rest of the story... 25. Intel or AMD? It’s the greatest question for anyone who’s built a PC after 2017. There was a time when Intel was the de facto PC processor, meanwhile AMD was the plucky underdog brand for enthusiasts and risk takers unafraid of a chip that had zero CPU throttling. AMD introducing its Zen architecture in 2017 shook things up, making AMD a real contender to challenge Intel’s decades-long dominance. Which is better? AMD or Intel CPUs? Generally, Intel chips are preferred by consumers for productivity and design work and AMD chips are the go-to for gaming. This has changed a bit in recent years with the rise of Zen and the Intel’s Raptor Lake troubles. View the full article
