  1. Spider-Man 2. The Last of Us. God of War. Horizon Zero Dawn. There are a lot of Sony-published games that you want to play on PC and Steam, but in some cases, logging in means linking your existing player accounts to the PlayStation maker's very own PSN. Last year, Helldivers 2 became mired in controversy after Sony announced, months after launch, that players would eventually need to wed their Steam accounts to the PlayStation Network. While that decision was rolled back, other Sony games, including Horizon and the remake of Until Dawn, still demand account linking. But the whole system is about to be partially transformed. 2. Obsidian Entertainment’s next fantasy RPG is set to release on Feb. 18, but those who can’t wait to get their hands on Avowed and explore the world of one of the most anticipated games of 2025 can play the game earlier with the Premium Edition. The studio has a 15-year history of releasing great games such as Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, The Outer Worlds, Grounded, and Pentiment. With such a portfolio, fans have high expectations for Avowed, a game set in the world of Eora first introduced in the Pillars of Eternity franchise. View the full article

  6. One of the most anxiously awaited features in Pokémon TCG Pocket has been trading—but now that it’s finally in the game, players are less than pleased with the new mechanic. Released just before the new expansion set Space-Time Smackdown, the trading mechanic in Pocket revolves around Trade Tokens and prioritizes lower-rarity cards. It is possible to trade high-rarity cards, but doing so requires having several copies, which has upset a number of collectors. Players dug into the new mechanic online, with one person posting a screenshot of the Trade Tokens tab and declaring, “Let’s face it, the game does NOT want you to trade cards.” Other fans were inclined to agree, chiming in with their thoughts on the new addition. 8. Following the success of the DOOM reboot, its sequel, DOOM Eternal, managed to take the series to greater heights with even faster action-packed gameplay, although its story ultimately left more questions than answers. Given that DOOM: The Dark Ages will expand the Doom Slayer's origins leading up to DOOM 2016, The Dark Ages has a great chance to go into even greater detail about the game world. While players will have to wait and see if The Dark Ages will answer every lingering question from its predecessor, it will likely provide a better perspective on one relatively mysterious faction. 9. PlayStation exclusives eventually releasing on PC has largely been a popular move. However, the one drawback has been the need to connect to a PlayStation Network account to play them, something PlayStation has walked back with previous releases due to backlash. Instead of getting rid of that hurdle entirely, PlayStation is now offering those playing its console exclusives on PC incentives to sign up to PSN and link their accounts to PC. 10. PC players will soon no longer require a PlayStation Network account to play Sony’s first-party games, but having one will now also unlock in-game extras. With the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 for PC on January 30, having a PSN account to play the game will be optional. That will also be the case with previously released titles God of War Ragnarök and Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered, plus The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, which will be released on April 3, 2025. 12. Call of Duty’s season two for ****** Ops 6 launched yesterday after weeks of waiting for new content, and it definitely has not been without its fair share of issues. The biggest issue by far has been an error that says “join failed because you are on a different version,” and it’s been happening consistently for players on both BO6 and Warzone whenever they try to group up for games with friends in a party. 13. Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card was faster than the RTX 3080 card it replaced. But it was also faster than the RTX 3080 Ti, 3090, and 3090 Ti. One of the good things about a new graphics card generation is that the new cards bring the last generation's inaccessibly expensive high-end performance down to cards that more people can actually afford. That's not the case with the new $999 RTX 5080, which beats the previous-generation RTX 4080 Super by a little bit and the older RTX 4080 by a slightly larger bit but doesn't come close to beating or even replicating the performance of the outgoing 4090. Nvidia points to its new DLSS Multi-Frame Generation technology as a mitigating factor here, leaning on its AI-generated frames to close the gap that the 5080's raw rendering performance can't close on its own. And sure, it's nice that this card can do that. On paper, the 5080 is also technically a good value compared to the flagship RTX 5090—between 60 and 75 percent of the performance for half the price (though talking about the MSRP of any of these cards at launch is strictly theoretical, given allegedly short supply and the demand from both actual buyers and scalpers looking to make a buck). 14. Nic says that RPG remake sequel Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is "uneven, unfocused, and unmissable". You also can’t miss its regular performance hiccups, which most often manifest as little but frequent stutters that occur as you’re moseying around its poorly planet. Or can you? News comes via Nic himself that modder FrancisLouis, whose previous works include performance-enhancing rejigs of various games (and one that turns the Silent Hill 2 remake’s pipe weapon into a rigid, A-posing wife), has produced Fantasy Optimizer: an overhaul of how FF7 Rebirth handles shaders and streamed visuals. Both Nic and myself have tried it out on our respective rigs, and it works! Mostly. Read more View the full article
  15. Friday December 10, 1993: That's the day the FPS genre changed forever as Doom came barreling onto our PCs. The weapon feedback, blood-pumping soundtrack, and unashamed over-the-top violence might seem quaint today, but that's only because the entire videogame industry learned from the lessons id Software was teaching. That was over 30 years ago, though, and since then every other shooter to grace our screens owes the Doomguy an unpayable debt. This is why the recent Doom re-releases from Bethesda are so important, because not only do they make these classics easier to play than ever, but they're spruced up for the modern age. There was one thing missing at launch, however, and Bethesda has finally added it to the games. Read the rest of the story... 16. Seeing new simulation sandbox game RoadCraft in action has me very eager to get stuck into its gorgeous heavy-industry construction projects. It's a spiritual follow up to Saber Interactive's realistic, physics-driven off-road driving simulator SnowRunner, and leans into that delightfully weighty sense of vehicular heft. It's all about rebuilding some of the planet's most devastated locales, putting construction equipment to work in either single player or co-op, and it's looking spectacular. 17. Almost a year ago to the day, Arrowhead dropped Helldivers 2. Perfectly balancing Starship Troopers-esque satire with a simple yet fun gameplay loop, the futuristic co-op shooter was everywhere for months on end, spiking at a colossal 450,000 players on PC alone. While a series of awkward balance changes and the infamous PlayStation Network account link controversy hit the game hard, it remains one of 2024's biggest winners. But there's still room for newcomers to muscle their way into the fray, and Phantom Line, a co-op FPS from a team of ex-Bioshock and Cyberpunk 2077 devs, is designed to do just that. 18. Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090 stock will suffer from "significant demand" that will inevitably lead to GPU shortages, according to the GPU maker. In news that will surprise absolutely nobody, RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 stock is expected to be so highly sought after that Nvidia has itself warned potential customers to expect "stock-outs" to occur. The launch of these new Nvidia graphics cards is highly anticipated, but it's expected to be a bumpy one. While the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 are set to be the best graphics cards you can buy once they're released on January 30, actually getting your hands on one might be difficult, with some gamers already camping outside brick-and-mortar stores for the chance to own one.
