  1. Dune Awakening creative director Joel Bylos revealed during a press Q&A earlier this month that "a bunch of constraints" were put in place for the team as part of its collaboration with Hollywood. This, it turns out, was one of the core reasons why the game takes place in an alternate history. Read more View the full article
  2. Even by the standards of FromSoftware and the Dark Souls formula, Shadow of the Erdtree was, at times, absolutely brutal. If you've ground your way through the Lands Between, finishing off the Elden Ring DLC in style, you'd be forgiven for wanting some form of reprieve, a nice, long break to play something calmer, kinder. But the Elden Ring Nightreign beta, also known as the network test, is already almost upon us. A roguelike spin on the sadistic fantasy RPG, Nightreign pits you and three comrades against successively hard mobs and bosses in a white-knuckle fight for survival. If you applied to play it before launch, FromSoftware may have already been in touch. Read the rest of the story... 3. Sticking a media playtest for a Dune game in the frigid depths of a Norwegian January is peak comedic irony. Yet there I was, layered up, exploring the unforgiving Arrakean desert from Oslo's former multiplex-turned-gaming hub, Eldorado, having been invited by developer Funcom. While the venue may serve a different purpose nowadays, I still witnessed moments of absolute cinema during my six-hour Dune Awakening preview as I wrestled with raiders, legged it from sandworms, and familiarized myself with the laws of the desert. God made Arrakis to test the faithful, and Funcom's making Dune Awakening to test the gamers. Read the rest of the story... 4. Faction imbalance is a problem as old as MMOs themselves, one must only look at World of Warcraft servers being dominated by either the Alliance or Horde as an example of how players love flocking to the faction leading the pack. Dune Awakening is no different, though according to creative director Joel Bylos, the team has a solution in the works to combat it: a third faction. Read more View the full article
  5. This ******* Bodies experiment should have a cuddly nature because its cuteness tricks you into a false sense of security. It isn’t until it opens its face, revealing a mouth within a mouth, both bloody with chipped teeth, that you realize Yarnaby is just another monster you’ll have to run from in Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4. If you were wondering who Yarnaby is in Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4, here is everything we know about this ******* Bodies project. View the full article
  6. The Doctor is one of the most interesting characters in Poppy Playtime. While it’s clear he’s one of the antagonists, you cannot help but listen to his evil Bond-villain monologues and wonder if there’s some truth behind his words. After all, what would he get for lying to The Player? Here is everything we know about Harley Sawyer in Poppy Playtime, including his backstory and role as the doctor in Chapter 4: Safe Haven. 7. The descent into Playtime shows a surprising number of allies on your side, desperately hoping someone will save them from damnation and free them from The Prototype’s grasp. Poppy Playtime: Chapter 4 takes place inside Playtime’s Prison, a facility meant to house only the experiments. Now, it’s the home of the dead, but the few characters that remain are hoping you will stop The Prototype for good. As each Poppy Playtime chapter concludes, we never know what’s coming next. We defeat orphans-turned-monsters, their remains taken by Experiment 1006, creating a sense of wonder whether those who didn’t die on-screen will make their return or if Bron and Boxy-Boo will finally make an appearance. 9. Poppy Playtime Chapter 4 picks up where the last chapter left off, after showing another VHS ad for one of Playtime Co.'s toys from when the company still operated. This time, Doey takes the spotlight in both the ad and the concerning home video clips that follow it. Taking place in a prison this time around, where Playtime Co. is no longer hiding the sinister experiments they conduct behind the guise of innovation and making children happy, how does Chapter 4 live up to expectations? 10. Asus' new Q-Release Slim system for quickly removing graphics cards is damaging graphics cards and other PCIe cards, according to new reports. Q-Release Slim is designed to be an easier way to remove PCIe devices, such as graphics cards, from Asus motherboards by removing the need to press a lock release button - you just pull the card straight out - but it appears to be harming the cards in the process. However, Asus has been quick to respond, releasing a statement playing down the severity of the situation. With Asus motherboards featuring the new quick card release system now being out in the wild, reports are coming in of the new motherboards scratching the printed circuit board (PCB) when being disconnected. This is understandably a major concern for any graphics card user, but especially those looking to buy one of the new best graphics card options such as the $2,000 RTX 5090. That's if you manage to work out where to buy an RTX 5090, of course. Read the rest of the story... 11. The Sims 4 is a free game, but the extra content available for purchase can quickly add up. Searching for websites that offer player-made custom content, also known as CC, can be a good way to avoid burdening a wallet. Since its creation in 2014, The Sims 4 has put out several purchasable DLC packs ranging from full expansions to small "kits," with more continuously added to the shop. This means that staying on top of what's new in the game can add up quickly, totaling well over $1,000, unless players focus on the free mods others have made. View the full article

  13. All eyes are on Civilization 7 as February arrives, but the Firaxis giant is far from the only historical 4X game in town. Rival Old World has plenty of pedigree of its own, coming from former Civ 4 lead designer Soren Johnson and his studio Mohawk Games. It combines all the hex-grid tactics of modern Civilization with more character-led events and drama akin to grand strategy games like Crusader Kings 3. Now, however, a new expansion is coming that's set to take things in a more catastrophic direction with the introduction of dangerous deities willing to unleash sweeping natural disasters. 14. Silent Hill 2 was one of 2024's most shocking surprises when it launched in October. Bloober Team's remake of the classic horror experience was met with mixed opinions after the first few trailers, and due to Bloober Team's somewhat patchy track record, many were worried that the new version wouldn't live up to the 2001 original. But, in the end, it was a great game for newcomers and long-term fans alike. I loved it, and I recommend buying it while it's at its cheapest price yet in the Fanatical Lunar *****. 15. January is coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean the disgruntled League of Legends player base will let go of its grudges. In a new discussion, players have now expressed that even the premium battle pass is bad after Riot Games introduced a wave of changes to the ecosystem. “Finished the new premium pass and I’m never buying it again,” the title of a Jan. 30 Reddit thread reads, where players expressed their dissatisfaction with Riot’s new battle pass model introduced to League with the 2025 season. The thread’s creator felt that they were lied to since Riot promised they would earn more skins from this new model than before, only to earn fewer and worse ones at that. “The pass skins are simply horrible, not even the Katarina one is worth it. There are almost no orbs, the ‘random skin’ it’s also not worth it,” they said. The premium “Welcome to Noxus” pass nets you about seven orbs and a few skins, or about the equivalent of what one could have earned by playing the game casually pre-2025. View the full article
  16. The last Minesweeperalike I wrote up was a sparkling slurry of mind-altering pop-ups and resinous AI cleavage. It was David Cronenberg's Minesweeper: The Substance Edition, and I was sincerely worried that I'd put you all off Minesweeper for life. But before you mop your last munition and turn in your index finger for good, give Dragonsweeper a try. It's Minesweeper with an altogether less atrocious twist which you can hopefully deduce from the name. Read more View the full article
  17. One of the most common mobs you’ll regularly run into as you travel around your Minecraft world is Cows. You can find them grazing around most biomes with a few different Cow variants available to meet and befriend, depending on what type of region you’re in. Cows didn’t always have special variants, so you might not know how to track down the different versions. Each one calls different biomes home, so ensuring you’re in the right location is crucial for finding them. Here are all the Cow variants and how to find them in Minecraft. 20. Key Dragon Age developers have announced they are leaving BioWare after the developer restructured to focus on the next Mass Effect. Yesterday, January 29, IGN reported that BioWare had moved a number of the studio’s developers onto other projects within EA as it focuses entirely on Mass Effect 5. General manager Gary McKay said the studio is "taking this opportunity between full development cycles to reimagine how we work." "Given this stage of development, we don’t require support from the full studio,” McKay continued. “We have incredible talent here at BioWare, and so we have worked diligently over the past few months to match many of our colleagues with other teams at EA that had open roles that were a strong fit." IGN understands that EA has already placed an unknown number of developers from BioWare into other, equivalent roles within the company. But a smaller number of Dragon Age team members are also seeing their roles terminated, and are being offered time to apply to other roles within the company if they so choose. Following the announcement, a number of BioWare developers took to social media to say they were now leaving the studio. Editor Karin West-Weekes, narrative designer and lead writer on Dragon Age: The Veilguard Trick Weekes, and editor Ryan Cormier all said they were looking for work, with producer Jen Cheverie and senior systems designer Michelle Flamm also confirming their exit. BioWare already suffered a round of layoffs in 2023, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard director Corinne Busche announced her departure from the studio last week. IGN asked EA for specifics on how many individuals at BioWare were being impacted by this latest change, how many face potential layoffs, and how many remain at the studio, but EA’s response was vague: "The studio's priority was Dragon Age. During this time there were people continuing to build the vision for the next Mass Effect. Now that The Veilguard has shipped, the studio's full focus is Mass Effect. "While we're not sharing numbers, the studio has the right number of people in the right roles to work on Mass Effect at this stage of development." BioWare’s work on Dragon Age: The Veilguard was brought to an end last week with what sounded like its last major update. Dragon Age: The Veilguard was the first new game in the fantasy RPG series in 10 years, but it came and went not with a bang but a whimper. Amid the launch BioWare confirmed Dragon Age: The Veilguard wouldn’t get any post-launch DLC, shocking fans who had hoped for expansions as previous Dragon Age games had received. Last week, EA admitted Dragon Age: The Veilguard had failed to meet sales expectations by a whopping 50%; it had expected three million players, but the game managed only 1.5 million. We've chronicled some of the game's development challenges already, including layoffs and the departure of several project leads at different stages. As for Mass Effect, EA said a "core team" at BioWare is developing the next Mass Effect game under the leadership of veterans from the original trilogy, including Mike Gamble, Preston Watamaniuk, Derek Watts, Parrish Ley, and others.
