When you start playing Obsidian's Avowed, one of the first things you do is create a character. This involves choosing a background, which might seem like a small choice, since there are just five options that look similar. However, this choice is more important than it seems and can shape the game experience. Even though it is possible to change the character's abilities later, the background picked gives you some initial advantages. View the full article
There are plenty of insect collectibles in Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, including the Dragonfly, which can only be found in specific locations. Bugs like the Dragonfly can be caught in large numbers and used as ingredients to craft important items. However, they are also used as key items for important quests and substories, making it worth knowing where you can track down each insect type. View the full article
I recently decided to watch What We Do in the Shadows, Taiki Waititi's bizarre vampire mockmentary. It was the logical next step in my 'things to watch/play while I wait for Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2' journey, and I regret absolutely nothing. Yet, I know that, by the end of it all, the streets of Seattle will likely still be shrouded in shadows; I'm Transylvania dreaming of a release date, but it just isn't here yet. Swooping in to save me, however, is Cabernet, a stylish 2D vampire RPG that just dropped on Steam - and it's been on my wishlist for some time. Read the rest of the story... View the full article
It's pretty rare these days that creepypastas find any kind of success - they were popular in the earlier, more mysterious days of the internet. But one of the few that's really taken off in recent years is The Backrooms. Originally emerging back in 2022, between short stories, videos, and memes, The Backrooms tells the tale of a strange middle dimension, outside the borders of reality. The Backrooms 1998 is part of that universe. Almost three years after it entered early access, the game's full 1.0 release is finally here - and for a limited time, you can get it at a pretty nice discount, too. Read the rest of the story... Every time a new Pokémon GO event rolls around, there is always a long list of new Pokémon making an appearance for the first time or becoming more common during the duration of the event. The Pokémon GO Tour: Unova Global event is no different, and there are a lot of Pokémon on the event list. Whether you’re looking for something extra special or you just want a Pikachu with a specific hat, there’s something for everyone to aim for during the Unova Global event. Table of contents****** and White KyuremShiny MeloettaEvent themed Pokémon HabitatsPossible Pokémon from EggsPokémon attracted with IncenseRaid Pokémon ****** and White Kyurem Image via Niantic Perhaps the biggest draw of the event is the debut of Kyurem’s alternate forms, ****** and White Kyurem. These Pokémon will be available to battle in 5-star raids, and you’ll be able to add them to your own Pokédex using Fusion. If you want to know more about ****** and White Kyurem in Pokémon GO, check out our full guide on how to get them. Shiny Meloetta Image by Destructoid For the first time, players will be able to get a Shiny Meloetta in their Pokédex during the Unova Global event. To do so, you’ll need to purchase a ticket for Masterwork Research, which costs $4.99 (or the equivalent in your local currency). Completing this Masterwork Research will guarantee an encounter with the never-before-seen shiny Pokémon. On the plus side, Masterwork Research does not expire, so you’ll be able to purchase the ticket and then complete the tasks in your own time without having to rush through it during the event. Event themed Pokémon Habitats Image via Niantic There will be four timed “Habitats” to explore during the Unova Global event, each with their own selection of Pokémon to find and capture. The Pokémon GO Tour: Unova Global event is set to start on March 1, lasting for 48 hours. While the event itself is filled with new features and Pokémon to encounter, it also heralds the arrival of some long-awaited legendary Pokémon. Kyurem was first introduced to the Pokédex in Generation V alongside two other Legendary Pokémon, Reshiram and Zekrom. It’s already possible to get Kyurem in its basic (unfused) form in Pokémon GO, but the two ****** and White forms are set to make their debut during the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova events in New Tapei City and Los Angeles on February 21, later being released to players around the world during the Global event on March 1. Table of contentsHow to get ****** and White KyuremHow to fuse KyuremHow to get Fusion EnergyHow to get Kyurem Candy****** and White Kyurem attacks learned by fusing How to get ****** and White Kyurem Image by Destructoid From the beginning of the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova Global event on March 1, players everywhere will begin to encounter either ****** or White Kyurem in 5-star raids. Sadly, defeating these two legendaries will not be enough to bag you an encounter to catch one, but you are guaranteed an encounter with an unfused Kyurem if you get through the raid. Using this unfused Kyurem, you’ll be able to use DNA Splicers to fuse Kyurem with either Zekrom or Reshiram, ending up with a ****** or White Kyurem, respectively. Shiny versions of both ****** and White Kyurem will also immediately be available from the start of the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova Global event, but getting your hands on one of those is purely down to luck. How to fuse Kyurem Image by Destructoid Fusion is not a new mechanic in Pokémon GO. It’s been used previously with Necrozma, fusing it with either Solgaleo or Lunala to get Dusk or Dawn Wings Necrozma. If you’ve already done that, then you’ll have a good idea of how this will work for Kyurem. If not, then here’s a breakdown. To create a ****** or White Kyurem, you’ll need the following: Fused PokémonFused withCost****** KyuremZekrom1,000 Volt Fusion Energy 30 Kyurem Candy 30 Zekrom CandyWhite KyuremReshiram1,000 Blaze Fusion Energy 30 Kyurem Candy 30 Reshiram Candy How to get Fusion Energy Every time you encounter and defeat a ****** or White Zekrom in a 5-star raid, you’ll earn yourself some Fusion Energy specific to the form. ****** Kyrum will reward Volt Fusion Energy, while White Kyurem will reward Blaze Fusion Energy. Stocking up the necessary 1,000 of each type is likely to take a fair amount of time and lots of successfully completed raids, but it’s definitely worth it for ****** and White Kyurem. How to get Kyurem Candy Image by Destructoid Even when you do manage to hoard away the 1,000 Fusion Energy needed for each fusion, there is still the issue of Candy. Kyurem, like all other Legendary Pokémon, will only pick up one Candy per 20km walked. As you need 30 for each fusion, that’s a total of 600km or triple that if you also need to collect Zekrom or Reshiram Candy as well. That’s a lot of walking, even for the most outdoorsy type. With that said, you can use Rare Candy that you’ve hoarded away instead of specific Pokémon Candy, making this process much easier. Rare Candy is rewarded for Research Tasks through the GO Battle League and for completing Raids. ****** and White Kyurem attacks learned by fusing If you happen to have a Kyurem obtained from a 5-star raid during the Holiday 2022 event, then it will have an event-specific Charged Attack called Glaciate. If a Kyurem with this Charged Attack is fused, this attack will transform into one of two attacks exclusive to ****** or White Kyurem: ****** Kyurem’s Freeze Shock White Kyurem’s Ice Burn If you don't have a Kyurem from the Holiday 2022 event, don't worry; there is still a way to get a Kyurem that knows Glaciate. When the Pokémon GO Tour: Unova Global event begins on March 1, all players will gain access to the "It's Not Over Yet" Special Research story. You'll have a choice between a Zekrom path or a Reshiram path. If you go for Zekrom, any Kyurem obtained after defeating a ****** Kyurem will know Glaciate. If you select Reshiram, you'll need to defeat White Kyurem in raids to get a Kyurem with the Glaciate attack. Sid Meier's Civilization 7 features several fun ways to win, but the Culture Victory isn't one of them. First introduced in Civ 3, I've rarely found the franchise's Culture Victories to be as assured in design as, say, the path to scientific domination, but they're generally capable of at least holding their own. Civ 7's approach to the concept, however, strikes me as unfinished in a way that stands out both among the victory paths available in-game and the history of the series as a whole. The Monster Hunter Wilds beta taught me two things. The first is that more games should be like Monster Hunter, or rather, specifically, like Wilds. It's bursting to the seams with content, even in the limited beta, it has an incredibly dynamic open world that's unlike any other and has largely functional multiplayer that's both immensely intense and relaxingly casual, a seemingly impossible feat executed well by few. I'm very grateful, in this regard, that I got to try out the beta prior to launch. View the full article

I think the first time I really understood what Moroi was, I mean the down-in-your-bones feeling you get when you’re playing something and the lighting bolt of understanding strikes you right on the noggin, was when my character fed himself to a talking meat-grinder because “something inside [him] screams let's do it!” Admittedly, it would have probably been funnier if Moroi had flashed a game over screen, and most games might’ve as a gag, but Moroi plays it straight. Into the meat-grinder you go, head-first. It chews for a bit and spits you out. You taste terrible, you see, and the grinder’s palate for manflesh is, for whatever reason, a bit more refined. Later on, you can offer it a severed hand (don’t ask) and it’s happy about that, and to grind up the bones and turn the leftover dust over to you so you can use it to help an old woman make “soup” (again, don’t ask), but eating the hand causes it to explode. “You are on fire,” your character remarks glibly as the machine spits binary. But you have your bone dust and it’s not your job to save sentient meat grinders who have developed a taste for longpig, so off you go to break some more stuff. And I said, out loud, “Ah, it’s a game like that.” And I was intrigued. The word moroi comes from Romanian folklore; it’s used to describe a vampire or ghost, or in some cases, a phantom that rises from the grave to draw energy from the living. I don’t know which part of the definition Moroi the game draws from. What I do know is this: your character, a bearded bear of a man, wakes up in a strange prison, in pain, with no memory of how he got there. Everyone else seems to know him, but he doesn’t recognize any of them. But maybe, as a very tall man in a very strange hat tells him, that’s for the best. Your first order of business is to get out, and that means solving simple puzzles, many of which boil down to “acquire item, take it somewhere.” Go talk to the cannibal eating himself as performance art who asks that, if eating himself isn’t his magnum opus, lightning strikes him dead. When lightning strikes him dead, take his severed hand and bring it to the sentient meat grinder, who gives you bone dust before catching fire. Then you take that to the tall man in the funny hat, who tells you to take it to the old lady making soup (she needs some salt; you have bone dust. Same thing, right?) before reminding you that “Death will meet you soon enough” and weirdly offering up that his name is Edgar. So it’s off to the old woman, who gratefully accepts your “salt” and is pulled headfirst into the cauldron by the soup to see what’s on the other side. “I'm starting to think that wasn't soup,” your character says. Noticing a pattern here? It’s got Doom’s Glory Kills, which quite literally teleport you across the screen for very satisfying slow-motion execution that drops health. On and on it goes, whether it’s a toenail from an overfed corpse still being pumped full of… something, or taking the old woman’s spoon and using it to wake up the rat with the important job of running in his wheel and powering The Horrors (and the doors). But then something strange happens. Moroi gives you a sword, and throws a bunch of enemies at you, and that’s where the magic happens. Combat is simple — the top-down, twin-stick perspective seems a little weird when you’re solving puzzles, but then you get to a combat section and it’s like “Oh” — but it’s fast and hits feel weighty and satisfying and it’s got Doom’s Glory Kills, which quite literally teleport you across the screen for very satisfying slow-motion executions that drops health. And then you get a minigun that shoots harpoons. And that’s rad. When Moroi is flipping between the two — quick, simple puzzles like using the number of corpses in a freezer to work out a door code, and combat sections against multiple enemies howling for blood like it’s ****** Friday and you’ve just snatched the last George Foreman grill — it’s pretty grand. But there’s also plenty of weird stuff beyond that, too. At one point, you save a duck with human teeth from being turned into a wide variety of duck-based cuisine and he rewards you with his teeth so you can reinforce your weapon, and then explains the way out through bloody gums. Sometimes messages pop up on-screen offering cryptic hints at something more. Other times, story details are left to collectibles scattered around the environment. I particularly liked the one that listed Duck of Eternal Torment as a type of potential meal prepared from our toothy friend, and the one where the cleaning lady resigns because the furniture is upside down every day and she’s convinced the place is cursed and/or haunted. And it’s never afraid to be weird. One of my Moroi demo’s last segments thrust me into the role of a strange, winged doll tasked by his mother (another doll) with helping his brothers – an increasingly rude group of trees – survive some incoming horror that’s killing all of them by literally giving away pieces of himself to do it. It’s an odd segment, but a compelling one, and when the credits rolled shortly thereafter, I wasn’t quite sure what to make of it, but I am interested in seeing where it goes from here. There are some things about Moroi that concern me: my demo was buggy (It crashed once;I got stuck between a door and a bookcase a couple times; once I fell through the floor) and some of the writing is uneven. But those are things that can be ironed out. Moroi marries the macabre and the mysterious, and it often went to places I didn’t see coming in my half-hour demo. I’m still not sure what a moroi is in this context, but I would like to find out. After all, who can resist a game with a meat grinder that lusts for the flesh of men and a duck with human teeth? I genuinely believe that Project Zomboid is one of the best games I've ever played on PC. Its modding community is a huge reason why that is the case, and I'm sorry to report that the creator of the legendary Vanilla Firearms Expansion mod has sadly passed away. As per a recent announcement from modder Vilespring over on the Project Zomboid subreddit, the original creator of Vanilla Firearms Expansion has died at the young age of 26. Michael Shtudiner, more commonly known in the Zomboid community under his Stendo_Clip moniker, made a name for himself by massively expanding and improving upon the base game's rather meager arsenal. Most impressively, Shtudiner did so by incorporating era-appropriate firearms, attachments, and other related doodads, which made his work almost universally acclaimed. I mean, Brita's Firearms Pack is great and all, but Vanilla Firearms Expansion really is the golden standard as far as weapon mods go for Project Zomboid, and this is a major loss for the community, let alone Shtudiner's family. [Hidden Content] Work on Vanilla Firearms Expansion for Project Zomboid B42 continues While the information on late Shtudiner's passing is understandably scarce, his sister Katherine has organized {LINK REMOVED}a GoFundMe campaign where members of the community can chip in to help out with ******** expenses. According to Katherine Shtudiner, "Michael passed away on February 17 at 2:47pm after a tragic gun accident. He was only 26 years old & things were really looking up for him after a long history of life struggles." Michael was, according to people close to him, eager to continue working on Vanilla Firearms Expansion in light of Project Zomboid's recent Build 42 release. The mod had as of yet not been updated to the game's latest version, though Shtudiner's fellow modder and the author of the Reddit announcement, Vilespring, aims to continue working on it. "When it comes to VFE, the part more immediately relevant to the Project Zomboid community, I am still planning on making the B42 update. Especially recently I have gotten a better understanding of Stendo's ultimate vision with the mod, and I will act within the best of my ability to continue that vision." Vilespring stated. For a community as long-lived as that of Project Zomboid, creators such as Michael are the ones who keep things trucking when official development slows down. He will be sorely missed in the modding circles, but it's his fellow creators such as Vilespring who will memorialize him for times to come. For example, Vilespring's already got plans for this specifically: [Hidden Content] If you're fond of Michael's work, consider chipping in on the family's ******** service GoFundMe campaign. Otherwise, if you're not familiar with his Vanilla Firearms Expansion mod, be sure to give it a whirl the next time you play B41. Or, perhaps, once Vilespring gets it up and running in B42. It's well worth the effort, and I'm sure you, too, will find Michael's vision for the game's guns was definitely something special. At the end of October, after PC fans had been enjoying the game for several years, Phasmophobia finally came to console. Now, you could get your ghost-hunting fright on via Xbox Series X|S or PS5, but there was one vital piece of the puzzle missing: voice recognition. Part of the game's immersive appeal is being able to elicit a ghost response by talking to it over a microphone directly or through the Spirit Box item. This was not the case if you were playing on console. Fortunately, developer Kinetic Games has finally added voice recognition to the PlayStation and Xbox ports of Phasmophobia. [Hidden Content] As noted in the most recent patch notes, v.0.11.1.2 implements the much-needed VOSK system on console. It also adds it to the PS VR2 version of the game. Now, you'll be able to do the following: Utilize the Spirit Box by speaking phrases such as "Are you friendly?" and "Give us a sign" to communicate with the ghost. Use Curse Possessions such as the Ouija Board to interact with the ghost and the Monkey Paw. Say the ghost’s name or other recognizable phrases near the ghost to be provided with a chance to increase the ghost’s activity for a short time. More on the way The update says a multitude of languages are now supported on PS5 and Xbox Series (with more on the way), including: English French Italian ******* Spanish Brazilian Portuguese Japanese While we're at it, Kinetic also recently revealed the update roadmap for Phasmophobia. Long-time fans have been looking forward to new content and the developer's ongoing commitment to the game. There are a bunch of exciting things coming our way, such as a complete rework of the Bleasdale and Grafton farmhouse locations, an overhaul of the playable characters, new ways to capture and gain bonuses for evidence in the upcoming Chronicle update, and a brand-new map. That last one is particularly noteworthy, seeing as Phasmo recently had a new map in the form of the Point Hope lighthouse. Typical, isn't it? We wait all this time for new levels, and then two come along at once. The post Phasmophobia update enables voice recognition on Xbox and PS5 appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
