Most of these memorable characters are split up into countless factions across the series, with some of the hostile ones posing a deadly threat to anyone they encounter across the wasteland. While some factions can have their own goals or explanations behind their cruel treatment of others, there are plenty of others that cross the line into irredeemably evil territory. So, it’s inevitable at the start of your journey that you go through a lot of lows—and we mean a lot. Death is only the beginning here at R.E.P.O., but paying your taxes are a little easier when you have friends there to revive you. View the full article

Mecha BREAK, the PVP mecha action title which recently got a free-to-play demo, has broken through a massive wave of negative review bombs and become one of Steam’s most-played titles. The game aims to launch later this year and plays as if Armored Core 6 was a multiplayer shooter. The demo for Mecha BREAK came out on Feb. 20 and attracted a ton of players internationally. Developed by ******** studio Amazing Seasun Games, it builds on the foundations laid by the Armored Core franchise and other mecha series, granting players controls of massive combat mechs that would put Pacific Rim to shame and pitting them against each other in colossal maps or versus AI-controlled enemies in narrative missions. While the demo performed quite well worldwide, peaking at over 300,000 players and becoming Steam’s sixth most-played game during peak hours (thanks, SteamDB), its ******** fan base embarked on a review-bombing campaign, causing it to receive a “Mostly Negative” label. Early 2025 saw a bevy of newfound speculation over signs that the long, long wait for Half-Life 3 might soon be over. Now, data contained in some new Valve game updates suggests that the project known in Valve engine code as "HLX"—and widely assumed to be Half-Life 3—might be reaching the final stages of production. In a new video, longtime Valve watcher Tyler McVicker goes into detail on a bevy of new variables and strings found after spending hours datamining the latest update to Dota 2 (the first update for that game since mid-December). The strings suggest a wave of behind-the-scenes Source engine changes dealing with the kind of "optimization and polish" that "happen at the end of a game's production cycle," McVicker says. "This is getting to the point where it does feel as if Valve is nearing completion of the production of HLX." [Hidden Content] Tyler McVicker goes over all the new datamined evidence that "HLX" development is wrapping up. Those changes include a set of new code in [Hidden Content], which is not actively used by Dota 2 and which includes many circumstantial Half-Life references (e.g. "machinery," "alien blood"). The specific code in this latest update deals with letting the engine scale the level of an NPC's AI simulation based on its distance from the player, a refinement that McVicker says is "absolutely... optimization work" and an apparent sign that "Valve has hit the optimization and polish phase" on HLX. Game studio Monolith, part of Warner Bros. Games until yesterday's multi-studio shutdown, had a notable track record across more than 30 years, having made Blood, No One Lives Forever, Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, F.E.A.R., and, most recently, the Lord of the Rings series, Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War. Those games, derived from J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction, had a "Nemesis System," in which the enemies that beat the player or survive a battle with them can advance in level, develop distinct strengths and weaknesses, and become an interesting subplot and motivation in the game. Monolith's next game, the now-canceled Wonder Woman, was teased more than three years ago, and said to be "powered by the Nemesis System." Not only will Wonder Woman not be powered by the Nemesis System, but likely no other games will be, either, at least until August 2036. That's when "Nemesis characters, nemesis forts, social vendettas and followers in computer games," patent US2016279522A1, is due to expire. Until then, any game that wants to implement gameplay involving showdowns, factions, and bitter NPC feelings toward a player must either differentiate it enough to avoid infringement, license it from Warner Brothers, or gamble on WB Games' legal attention. Ever get sick of dying and getting respawned, only to die almost immediately in Apex Legends? Well, this week, all of those respawns and revives will help you get a whole lot of free Apex Packs from the fine folks at Respawn. Season 24‘s Creator Commissioner event kicked off this week with challenges from Apex streamer Ninjayla, and they’re ones the community can all complete together. If the entire player population in Apex revives or respawns teammates or themselves in any battle royale mode this week a total of 70 million times, every player will receive 20 free Apex Packs courtesy of Respawn. Sounds like a lot, right? It’s not—the official Apex account revealed the community has already hit the first milestone after just over a day of the challenge being active, coming in at 20 million revives and respawns. That means the community has already locked in 10 free Apex Packs and 20 battle pass stars—but there’s more rewards where that came from. View the full article
It’s always sad when a face from our childhood passes away, and as someone who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer every day with my dad after school, I’m utterly heartbroken by the sudden death of Michelle Trachtenberg, who starred as Buffy’s sister. Well, eventually. Dawn Summers was originally introduced in an in-story retcon moment that saw characters blindly accepting that Buffy had always had a sister, even though she’d never existed before. It was later revealed that Dawn was actually the key to unlocking dimensions. Dawn’s debut as a character came in the first episode of season five, and she continued to be a central star until the end of the show. Image via HBO Max For many, especially those younger than me, Michelle Trachtenberg is probably more remembered for her role as Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl. But to me, she will always be Dawn Summers, everything I grew up wanting to be and the make-believe big sister I never had. Buffy was always too much older than me to be a reliable role model, although I’m still shaped by the things I witnessed in the show, but Dawn was just close enough to me in age to be something to aspire to. And when she turned out to be this supernatural thing that unlocked different dimensions? Well, that made her all the cooler in my eyes. Then, when I was a lowly emo going through the throes of adolescence in 2007, she made a sudden and unexpected reappearance in my life in a cameo role in the video for “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” alongside Seth Green, who played Oz in Buffy. The perhaps two-second segment of the video sparked a rewatch of Buffy from the very beginning, and I once again adored Dawn. Image via Island Records Trachtenberg was found unresponsive in her New York City home by her mother on January 26 at the age of just 39. According to ABC News, she had recently undergone a liver transplant, and her death is not being considered as suspicious, but rather more likely due to complications in the aftermath of the procedure. In recent months, fans have taken to questioning both Trachtenberg’s physical and mental health, posting comments on her Instagram posts about her “thinning hair” and “yellow eyes”. Of course, these comments are now buried under more recent RIPs after the news of her death, but isn’t that always the way when a celebrity dies? Before an expansion pack is sold to the public, The Sims 4 developers always release a free game update that brings fresh content—and in this instance, one of the most terrifying bugs to ever grace the game. Boy howdy, PCs sure are neat when your GPU isn't actively trying to kill itself in a blazing flame of glory. If you're not keen on that idea, looking into pre-builts with AMD GPUs may be the way to go, and Framework's fancy new Desktop PC is right on schedule. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm all for DIYing your own desktop from parts. Heck, that's what I've always done, and piecing the hardware together is great fun in my book. Choosing appropriate and compatible hardware can be a pain from a layperson's perspective, though, and it would seem that Framework understands this quite well. The company behind the snazzy semi-DIY Framework Laptop has just announced that it's working on a very exciting semi-DIY desktop PC as well, and everything points to it being a real hoot. [Hidden Content] The Framework Desktop PC is phenomenally neat, but it won't come cheap The Framework Desktop PC was just announced as part of the company's 2nd Generation 2025 launch event. It's effectively a pre-packaged set of finely tuned parts that the end-user simply needs to put together according to the provided instructions. Framework claims it shouldn't take more than 10 minutes to get your Desktop up and running, which is an impressively short build time if I'm honest. At the same time, the company also notes that the build process is "moderately" difficult, so that's something to keep in mind if you're interested in the device. A wealth of information about the Framework Desktop is available on the official order website. Two things to note on that front, though. Firstly, it's not a cheap PC by any stretch of the imagination, starting at just under $2000 US for the base model. Secondly, it's running some really exciting hardware, such as the fancy new AMD AI Max APU. In a practical sense, this means the Framework Desktop is going to be a remarkably potent workstation and gaming PC and should be capable of pulling its weight no matter what the workload might be. Here are some selected specs of note: APU (accelerated processing unit): AMD Ryzen AI Max 385 / AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 NPU (neural processing unit): Up to 50 TOPS @ 32 tiles Power draw: up to 120W sustained RAM: 32-128 GB of soldered-on LDDR5X-8000 memory Ports: 1x HDMI 21, 2x DP 21, 2x USB-C, RJ45 (5 Gbit), 2x USB-A 3.2, 3.5mm combo plug There's loads to like about this setup, but remember that all Framework Desktops also support all standardized Framework Laptop expansion modules, allowing you to add even more utility to your handy little rig, to say nothing of the lovely customizable front-end. Setting the Desktop's machine learning capabilities aside for a moment, Framework claims that the base $2000 spec of the PC should net you an average of 67 FPS at 1440p/Ultra in Monster Hunter Wilds, though admittedly with frame-gen technology enabled. Still, it's a very competent result for something as small and handy as this PC. Now, I'm not saying that the Framework Desktop is a phenomenal bang for your buck. You could feasibly build a substantially faster rig with an Nvidia GPU for about the same price if you wanted to. That's what I did, though I skipped the blazingly fast RTX 5000 series for obvious reasons. Framework's stuff is really neat, however, and the company's laptops have held up from the very start, so there's merit in choosing this particular device. Just note that the first couple of batches of the Framework Desktop have already sold out, so you may wait a while before yours ships out. The post The open-source laptop maker Framework now has a gaming Desktop PC as well appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
At long last, we're nearing the end of Disney Dreamlight Valley's Aladdin Realm story with just a couple more missions to complete. After obtaining the Protection Amulet and repairing Agrabah's Alchemy Table, you'll wrap up the Breaking Through mission and immediately begin the Wish Magic quest. Wish Magic quest walkthrough After repairing the Artisan District's Alchemy Table and crafting a Gold Lamp, you'll chat with Jasmine about deciphering the Ancient Tome before talking to Aladdin. This conversation with Aladdin marks the beginning of the Wish Magic quest, bringing you on a journey to uncover his three wishes. He remembers what they are, but they now need to materialize into magical fragments. First Aladdin wish remnant location Aladdin's first wish remnant is just outside the entrance to Agrabah. As you exit Agrabah and approach the portal back to Dreamlight Valley, turn right to find a desert oasis. While this only had one fishing circle previously, it now has four for you to target. Screenshot by Destructoid Although this quest task only asks you to find a wish fragment, you'll still want to cast your line in all four circles. Three will give you Quicksand Mud, while the fourth grants you the Remnant of the First Wish. Keep this mud on hand, as you'll need it later in this quest. Once you catch the mud and wish remnant, head back to Jasmine to hear about his second fragment. Second Aladdin wish remnant location Before we can collect Aladdin's second wish remnant, we must solve the fountain water puzzle connected to the Artisan District. First, you'll need to take the Quicksand Mud from before and Gold Shards from breaking sandstone rocks to create new pipes. Head to the massive fountain area near the Artisan District and Central Market before talking to Jasmine again. Screenshot by Destructoid From here, you have a new puzzle: rotating each circle so the water flows through the pipes. Starting with the circle closest to Jasmine, turn it once before moving clockwise, following each circle until their ends connect to the rest of the piping. The fourth circle is already in the right spot, so skip this and rotate the fifth until the Remnant of the Second Wish appears on the ground. Third Aladdin wish remnant location After solving the fountain puzzle, talk to Jasmine again about the last wish remnant. He freed the Genie, making this the most memorable and heartwarming wish he could've made. It's so special that it manifested into Genie's Joy, an item you now have to locate. You'll find Genie's sparkles in front of the palace where you first met Aladdin. Screenshot by Destructoid Once you collect the Remnant of the Third Wish, head back to the Artisan District and interact with the Alchemy Table you made during Breaking Through. Tossing all three remnants inside the cauldron will give you the Lamp Enchantment. Give everything to Jasmine to wrap up the Wish Magic quest, leading you directly into the Carpet Diem mission. If you're eager, like me, to jump into Monster Hunter Wilds on February 28 but don't want to wait a long time (unlike me), there's a cool way to save almost half a day if you're on Xbox. Once again, Capcom has decided to go for a regional launch on consoles. In simpler words, Monster Hunter Wilds is going to be released on your console when the midnight clock strikes 12 in your region. Naturally, some countries will have the game available earlier as the Sun appears there sooner. This creates a fun opportunity for Xbox users to jump in early with the help of a simple trick. How to play Monster Hunter Wilds early The following process is a tried-and-tested method specifically available for Xbox consoles. It's not available for all video games, as the system relies on regional launch schedules to work. Open the settings of your Xbox Series X|S console. Ensure that no game is running in the background. Just to be sure, restart your console once before starting the process. Go to System under your Xbox Settings. Select Language and Location. Select Location. Set your location to New Zealand. You'll have to restart your console. Once the console restarts, you can start playing Monster Hunter Wilds if it's already February 28 in the nation from Oceania. It doesn't matter where you're geographically as your console's location has temporarily been set to New Zealand. Image via Capcom YouTube. This method is pretty easy to try out, and it's safe. It's not any form of exploit, as Xbox allows you to switch the location of your console easily. If you're on PlayStation (like me), there's no such benefit to avail. The only thing to do is to wait patiently for midnight to arrive in your region. If you're on PC, you'll have to wait for a different system, as Steam will follow a simultaneous launch schedule across all regions.
