  2. Zach Barth, the namesake of game studio Zachtronics, tends to make a certain kind of game. Besides crafting the free browser game Infiniminer, which inspired the entire global Minecraft industry, Barth and his collaborators made SpaceChem, Infinifactory, TIS-100, Shenzen I/O, Opus Magnum, and Exapunks. Each one of them is some combination of puzzle game, light capitalism horror, and the most memorable introductory-level computer science, chemistry, or logistics class into which you unwittingly enrolled. Each game is its own thing, but they have a certain similar brain feel between them. It is summed up perhaps best by the Zachtronics team itself in a book: Zach-Like. Barth and his crew have made other kinds of games, including a forward-looking visual novel about AI, Eliza, and multiplayer card battler Nerts!. And Barth himself told PC Gamer that he hates "saying Zach-like." But fans of refining inputs, ordering operations, and working their way past constraints will thrill to learn that Zach is, in fact, back. Read full article Comments View the full article

  4. I want to be hyped for Assassin's Creed Shadows, but I have too many reservations to let that happen. Not only is it a game developed by Ubisoft, a company famous for making iterative entries in its long-running franchises that feel disappointingly uninspiring, but it's also part of a series that hasn't, in my opinion, had a solid entry in several years. There is also the problem of the game's dual protagonists, two characters that look incredibly interesting, but I fear will be robbed of any import thanks to AC Shadows' instance of letting you be either at any point. Shadow-dropped during PlayStation's State of Play in February, Warriors: Abyssis an isometric roguelike that's home to 100 playable characters from Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors franchises. The game is commonly likened to 2022'****** indie roguelike Vampire Survivors and is a perfect fit for the Warriors franchise, as it sees players mow down waves of enemies in true Musou fashion. 10. Since launch, PC players of Monster Hunter Wilds have been tinkering with the game, working to optimize their performance and settings. As it turns out, some even dug all the way into the config files and found a typo, which they subsequently tested to see if that could bump up their numbers. As discovered on Steam over the weekend (thanks, Kotaku), inside the config file of Monster Hunter Wilds, there's a line where "Resolution" is spelled "Resoltuion". According to the original Steam poster, fixing the misspelled word gave them a "perfomance boost," though they also said it made their processor temperature "jump significantly," from 50 degrees Celsius to 70. A Reddit thread spun up too, where the original poster claimed to get a mild performance bump from around 120 FPS with Frame Gen to around 140. "Again, maybe a coincidence but I have no idea," the OP said. "Needs more testing. I'm just happy to gain FPS somehow." Now, several repliers have commented with some words of caution and reason: adjusting this variable could be doing something completely different. "Renaming could just be setting whatever it is to a default which is lower than whatever it was, hence the perfomance increase," one Reddit commenter said. Another user said it's a placebo. The executable contains the same typo, so it actually refers to a specific node. "By 'fixing' the typo, that makes the game not find this one specific config key/value, so perhaps [its] defaulting to some other value," the responder said. There are, of course, posts disputing the placebo effect. Without official confirmation from Capcom, this does seem like a red herring. And it's best to advise caution when diving into the config files or other parts of the critical game files. Players' avid search for what fixing the typo does, however, indicates the fervor with which Monster Hunter Wilds players are hunting for performance bumps. The PC optimization has been a point of discussion for Monster Hunter Wilds players, up to the point that even social posts about an upcoming fix for a progression-breaking bug are garnering responses asking for optimization fixes. PC players continue to flood into Monster Hunter Wilds though, as Capcom's latest has been a record-breaking entry for both the series and the Steam storefront. With this much popularity, hopefully we see some fine-tuning in the weeks and months ahead, typo or not. A title update for Monster Hunter Wilds is expected in April, which is due to add a new endgame area to gather, as well as more monster hunting action for players to embark on. Sonic Unleashed was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo Wii in late 2008, with a PS3 version launching shortly afterward. It famously saw Sonic transform into a werewolf-like “Werehog” as he raced to gather the Chaos Emeralds and restore the shattered world after another one of Dr. Eggman’s schemes goes awry. As a result, Sonic Unleashedsplit its gameplay into day and night sections, with the regular Sonic speeding through the former and the Werehog smashing his way across the latter. This mining ore only spawns in one biome, but finding it isn’t entirely difficult—though it does rely on some RNG. In most cases, Gracium is required to advance in the Ore tree, which is an excellent stepping stone for better gear. The third tier of the Iron weapons can give you a good bump in damage, and you may even revisit this tree later as you cross into the upper echelons of the high rank. View the full article

  18. Looking for a list of all hobbies in The Sims 2? The Sims 2: Freetime expansion introduced 10 hobbies for Sims to pick up, each with a different associated career and secret lot. Read on for a list of all hobbies and more information on how to unlock them in The Sims 2. In this guide:Sims 2 hobbies listPredestined hobbiesHobbies and careersSecret hobby lotsHow to get a Genie lamp Sims 2 hobbies list Image by Destructoid As mentioned above, there are 10 possible hobbies to pick up if you have The Sims 2: Freetime installed. These can be discovered when Sims perform an activity associated with the hobby. You’ll know when this happens as the game will issue a pop-up message in the top right corner telling you that a Sim has discovered a new hobby. Sims with certain personality traits are predisposed to pick up a hobby relating to their traits. You can check a Sim’s personality traits by navigating to the 'Hobby Enthusiasm' menu (click on the head symbol, then the kite symbol on the bottom left panel). Here are all the available hobbies in The Sims 2, which personality types are more pre-disposed to pick them up, and which activities may trigger them. HobbyPersonality traitsActivities to raise enthusiasm Arts and CraftsSloppy, NiceRegularly view art and photo albums. Create art pieces like paintings or pottery. Flower arranging, sewing and toy making also raise enthusiasm for Arts and Crafts.CuisineNeat, LazyCook, bartend, or simply eat food. You can also enter cooking contests and write restaurant guides. Use a Schokolade 890 Chocolate Manufacturing Facility for an extra boost.Film and LiteratureShy, LazyYou can raise enthusiasm by watching most TV programs, particularly the Sims Broadcasting Network, KidzTube, or a movie. You can also write a novel or simply read books from a bookcase.FitnessOutgoing, ActiveAny physical activity will generally raise Fitness enthusiasm. This includes activities like jogging, yoga, swimming, rope jumping, ice skating, and roller skating. You can also take a spin on the Electro Dance Sphere.GamesPlayful, GrouchyPlay computer games, video games, pool, poker, chess, arcade games, or darts. You can also go bowling or enter a gaming contest.Music and DanceOutgoing, SeriousThe easiest way to raise enthusiasm for Music and Dance is to (unsurprisingly) perform music with an instrument or dance. You can also enter a dance contest, listen to an MP3 player, and DJ at a booth. Doing ballet exercises and singing karaoke also works.NatureSloppy, PlayfulIn general, be outside and engage in nature activities like bird watching, catching bugs, cloud watching, watering flowers, and feeding fish. Gardening, raking leaves, sleeping in tents, and fishing can also contribute.ScienceNeat, SeriousThe easiest way to earn enthusiasm for science is by stargazing through a telescope. You can also observe ants, summon aliens, and use various science equipment like the Surgical Training Station or Weathernaught 57X.SportsActive, GrouchyPlay sports like catch, soccer, boxing, basketball, golf, or kicky bag. You can also toss a football, go axe throwing, and log rolling.TinkeringShy, NiceHave your Sim repair broken electrical objects to quickly raise enthusiasm for Tinkering. You can also raise your level by playing with toy robots, RC toys, restoring the junk car, and using the robot crafting station. Along with the activities listed above, you can also gain enthusiasm for any hobby by browsing or blogging about the topic on a PC. You can also read hobby magazines, their respective sections in the daily newspaper, or talk about the topic with other Sims. A Sim’s enthusiasm level for a hobby isn’t the same as their skill level. A Sim may find enjoyment in cooking, for example, but have a low cooking skill. To see a Sim’s skill levels to compare, navigate to the ‘Skills & Career’ panel represented by the desk icon at the bottom left of the screen. Predestined hobbies Image by Destructoid Although a Sim may pick up any hobby, each Sim will have a special predestined hobby that they are more enthused with and will gain levels in faster than others. This is determined by your Sim’s personality traits. Once discovered, the hobby will be outlined in silver in the ‘Hobby Enthusiasm’ panel, a special noise will sound and you’ll get a pop-up message saying “I’m very excited that I tried this [hobby name]! That was a lot of fun!”. Hobbies and careers Certain hobbies are connected to careers. When a Sim excels at a hobby, they may be approached with a job offer at an elevated level, giving them a fast track onto the career ladder. The following hobbies can help you get a starting jump on these careers: HobbyCareerArts and CraftsArtistCuisineCulinaryFilm and LiteratureEntertainment, Journalism, Show BusinessFitnessAdventurerGamesGamerMusic and DanceMusic, DanceNatureNatural ScientistScienceScienceSportsAthleticTinkeringIntelligence, Military Secret hobby lots Image by Destructoid When a Sim gets to level 5 ‘Enthusiasm’ for a hobby, they may receive a visit at their lot by an ‘Instructor’. Instructors are masters of a particular hobby and can coach other Sims to help them gain levels faster. They will usually introduce themselves to your Sim and then leave. You’ll be able to visit them again at their associated secret lot. Alternatively, they may just leave a message with your Sim, inviting them to a Secret Lot. You’ll know when you’ve got access as there will be a membership card icon next to the Hobby Enthusiasm meter. To visit a secret lot, prepare your Sim to travel (select your Sim and select the ‘Walk to Community Lot’ option or call a Taxi). From the neighborhoods menu, select ‘Hobbies’. How to get a Genie lamp Image by Destructoid If you reach level 10 ‘Hobby Enthusiasm’ in any hobby whilst also achieving a high Lifetime Aspiration level, there is a chance the matchmaker NPC will visit your lot with a Genie Lamp. If you interact with the lamp and rub it, a Genie will appear and grant your Sim three wishes. These wishes can range from money to attraction and even have the power to bring a Sim back to life. Careful though, if the Genie is in a bad mood they may sabotage the wish and bring them back as a zombie. That rounds up our guide to all hobbies in The Sims 2. One of the more difficult items to obtain is the Bird Wyvern Gem, a rare item that only appears in select monsters. The Bird Wyvern Gem is a critical item you’ll need to complete a handful of weapons and armor. Knowing where to find it is essential, but the best way to get it to drop from a monster is also good to know, too. A monster might have a higher chance of dropping if you break a particular body piece or cut through a wound. Here’s what you need to know about the Bird Wyvern Gem in Monster Hunter Wilds. 22. Monster Hunter Wilds has a patch arriving soon, addressing a known but fairly important issue with its story progression. As noted over the weekend by the Monster Hunter Status account on X/Twitter, players encountered an issue where a certain NPC didn't appear. Without the NPC there, this disabled story progression for Main Mission: Chapter 5-2 "A World Turned Upside Down." The main Monster Hunter account followed up with an update this morning, and confirmed a patch addressing the known progression blcokers will be deployed tomorrow morning, March 4. The update will briefly drop players from their online sessions when it goes live, but they will be able to jump back in after updating. It's a fast turnaround for a very frustrating bug, which is good to see. Hopefully anyone stalled out by the random disappearing NPC will be able to find them now. Repliers and commenters are still clamoring on social media for performance and optimization updates though. PC players have been voicing concern over Monster Hunter Wilds' performance on their set-ups, and joining together in various communities to try and find settings to help optimize play. A title update for Monster Hunter Wilds is expected in April, which is due to add a new endgame area to gather, as well as more monster hunting action for players to embark on. We'll see if the update takes aim at PC performance and optimization. In the meantime, though, it doesn't seem to have affected player counts: Monster Hunter Wilds has been shattering records for both its own series and the PC storefront Steam. To help get your Monster Hunter Wilds adventure started, take a look at what Monster Hunter Wilds doesn’t tell you, and a guide to all 14 weapon types in the game.
