  1. Ashbourne school evacuated as boy takes grenade to show-and-tell Ashbourne school evacuated as boy takes grenade to show-and-tell Dan Martin BBC News, East Midlands Supplied Head teacher Jeanette Hart put the grenade behind a “substantial” tree and called the police A school was evacuated and Army explosives experts called after a pupil unexpectedly produced a grenade from his pocket in a show-and-tell assembly. Staff at Osmaston CofE Primary School, in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, said they had not been expecting the boy to bring the World War Two weapon in for the assembly on Friday morning. Head teacher Jeanette Hart said she was unsure if the device was live, so she took it from the boy and slowly placed it behind a “substantial” tree in the car park as the school was cleared and emergency services were called. Army experts later established the grenade had been safe but police praised the “quick-thinking” staff. “It was quite an eventful assembly,” Mrs Hart told the BBC. “It was going fine and there was a boy who brought an old bullet case in, which I knew about, but then his friend produced a hand grenade from his pocket. “That, I was not expecting.” Matlock, Cromford, Wirksworth and Darley Dale Police SNT Pupils were said to be excited by the sight of police arriving at the school Mrs Hart said she had not wanted to cause a panic when she realised he was holding the grenade – a family heirloom the boy had picked up without telling his parents. “It looked old and I thought it might be safe but I didn’t want to take the risk,” she said. “I ended the assembly, took it off him and slowly carried it outside and put it behind a far tree in the car park. I wasn’t 100% happy carrying it to be honest.” Mrs Hart said the children were moved to safety while police and Army explosive experts were called to the scene. “The children didn’t really know what was going on but they knew something was different and they were excited because they saw the police and because they were playing out when they would have been in school,” she said. Osmaston CoE Primary School Mrs Hart said the boy had brought the grenade in entirely innocently Derbyshire Police said Army explosives experts determined the grenade was safe using X-ray equipment. Officers praised the school staff for their quick thinking. A spokesman for the Matlock, Cromford, Wirksworth and Darley Dale Police Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We even got to see those [X-ray] images and [were] told a detailed analysis of how there was nothing that would set the grenade off. “Just a word of guidance for parents and guardians – double check what your kids are taking to show-and-tell, especially when they are family heirlooms.” Family ‘taken aback’ Mrs Hart said she had had “a little chat” with the boy after the drama. “It was entirely innocent,” she said. “I don’t think he ever really knew what it was. “We’d been talking about VE Day and he knew it was from the war and just thought it was an interesting thing. “His family didn’t know [he took it] and they were a little taken aback.” Source link #Ashbourne #school #evacuated #boy #takes #grenade #showandtell Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  2. Helldivers 2 Heart of Democracy Update’s Greatest Gift Is the SEAF Forces, Not the Illuminate Super Earth Invasion Helldivers 2 Heart of Democracy Update’s Greatest Gift Is the SEAF Forces, Not the Illuminate Super Earth Invasion You’d think a full-scale alien invasion of Super Earth would be enough to steal the show, right? Not in Helldivers 2. While the Illuminate are raining down havoc and rewriting the rules of war, players have found something even more worth protecting than democracy itself. We’re talking about the blue-clad, brave-as-hell SEAF soldiers. These NPCs dropped into the battlefield like a surprise birthday gift from Arrowhead, and let’s just say… players are obsessed. Forget about them being cannon fodder, SEAF is family now. SEAF Troops are here, and they’ve hijacked the Helldivers 2 Those who paid attention know that the Super Earth Armed Forces (SEAF) have been part of the Helldivers lore for a while, but the Heart of Democracy update on May 20 marks their first real in-game appearance. These are your classic grunts: disciplined, loyal, and decked out in signature blue gear. But their arrival alongside helldivers during the battle for Super Earth has turned them into instant fan favorites. Once background scenery, SEAF soldiers now walk, run, and die alongside players in the urban hellscape of Super Earth’s megacities, defending against Illuminate invasion. Thanks to Arrowhead’s smart choices, these soldiers can even follow player commands, adding an unexpected (and strangely emotional) extra layer of immersion. In typical Helldivers’ fashion, players are overflowing with emotion towards them. Players are going out of their way to heal them with their Stims, not because it works particularly well, but because it just feels right. It’s pretty clear that players have found another reason to save the Super Earth, besides the ultimate goal of spreading democracy. Comment byu/Yurishenko94 from discussion inhelldivers2 Comment byu/Yurishenko94 from discussion inhelldivers2 Whether it’s shielding them, guiding them, or just keeping them alive a little longer, players are doing everything they can to protect these NPC comrades. And honestly? We can’t get enough of them. The Illuminate attacked, but SEAF made the headlines We came to repel aliens, but stayed to protect the soldiers. | Image Credit: Arrowhead Let’s be real: the Heart of Democracy update would have been all about the Illuminate’s dramatic return and their invasion of Super Earth. And while that galactic chaos is cool and all, the Helldivers 2 community has made it clear, SEAF soldiers are the real stars of the show. It’s the kind of unexpected twist only this player base could deliver, and we are here for it. Instead of just fighting enemies, they’re defending their AI brothers-in-arms like they’re part of the squad. Because now, they are. The update has been a hit across the board, from new enemies to new mission types, and the glorious mega city biome. But SEAF is the heart of it all. Arrowhead Game Studios ‘ developers clearly weren’t kidding when they said they were cooking. They’ve not only expanded the world but deepened the emotional stakes, and it’s working beautifully. So what are you waiting for? Suit up, drop in, and do your part, not just for democracy, but for every last SEAF soldier still holding the line. 3. Made in India iPhones Will Still Be Cheaper in the US, Even With Donald Trump’s 25 Percent Tariff: GTRI Report Made in India iPhones Will Still Be Cheaper in the US, Even With Donald Trump’s 25 Percent Tariff: GTRI Report Even if the United States were to impose a 25 per cent tariff on iPhones manufactured in India, the total production cost would still be much lower if compared with manufacturing the devices in the U.S, according to a report by Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI). This comes amid a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, threatening to impose 25 per cent tariffs on iPhones if Apple decides to make it in India. However, the GTRI report showed that manufacturing in India remains cost-effective, despite such duties. The report breaks down the current value chain of a $1,000 (roughly Rs. 83,400) iPhone, which involves contributions from over a dozen countries. Apple retains the largest share of the value, about $450 (roughly Rs. 37,530) per device, through its brand, software, and design. It also added that the U.S. component makers, such as Qualcomm and Broadcom, add $80 (roughly Rs. 6,672), while Taiwan contributes $150 (roughly Rs. 12,510) through chip manufacturing. South Korea adds $90 (roughly Rs. 7,506) via OLED screens and memory chips, and Japan supplies components worth $85 (roughly Rs. 7,089), mainly through camera systems. Germany, Vietnam, and Malaysia account for another $45 (roughly Rs. 3,753) through smaller parts. GTRI stated that China and India, despite being major players of iPhone assembly, earn only around $30 (roughly Rs. 2,502) per device. This is less than 3 per cent of the total retail price of an iPhone. The report argues that manufacturing iPhones in India is still economically viable even if a 25 per cent tariff is applied. This is mainly because of the sharp difference in labour costs between India and the U.S. In India, assembly workers earn approximately $230 (roughly Rs. 19,182) per month, while in the U.S. states like California, labour costs could soar to around $2,900 (roughly Rs. 2,41,860) per month due to minimum wage laws, a 13-fold increase. As a result, assembling an iPhone in India costs about $30 (roughly Rs. 2,502), while the same process in the U.S. would cost around $390 (roughly Rs. 32,526). In addition to this Apple gets the benefit of production-linked incentive (PLI) on iPhone manufacturing in India from government. If Apple were to shift production to the U.S., its profit per iPhone could fall drastically from $450 (roughly Rs. 37,530) to just $60 (roughly Rs. 5,004), unless retail prices are significantly increased. The GTRI report highlighted how global value chains and labour cost differences make India a competitive option for manufacturing, even in the face of potential U.S. trade restrictions. 5. A Rare Signal for the S&P 500 — Its 15th in the Last 75 Years — Points to the Stock Market Skyrocketing Over the Next 5 Years A Rare Signal for the S&P 500 — Its 15th in the Last 75 Years — Points to the Stock Market Skyrocketing Over the Next 5 Years Though stocks are a bona fide long-term wealth creator, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite don’t move from Point A to Point B in a straight line. Numerous catalysts — including President Donald Trump’s ever-changing tariff and trade policy — whipsawed Wall Street in April. An exceptionally rare ******* of outsize gains for the benchmark S&P 500 bodes extremely well for future stock returns, based on what history has to say. 10 stocks we like better than S&P 500 Index › For well over a century, the stock market has served as the premier wealth creator for investors. Though other asset classes, such as real estate, Treasury bonds, gold, silver, and oil, have increased in nominal value, nothing has come particularly close to matching the annualized return that stocks have brought to the table for more than 100 years. But just because stocks have demonstrated they’re a bona fide long-term moneymaker, it doesn’t mean equities get from Point A to Point B in a straight line. In April, the mature stock-driven Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI), benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC), and growth-oriented Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) showed that markets can, indeed, move in both directions. Image source: Getty Images. Over the ******* of one week, the S&P 500 logged its fifth-steepest two-day percentage decline since 1950, its 12th-biggest four-day percentage drop over 75 years, and its largest single-session point gain since its inception. In fact, April 9 marked the largest respective nominal point advances for the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite since they were incepted. Volatility of this magnitude is exceptionally rare — but when it does occur, it often leads to outsize returns for long-term-minded investors. One such rare event just triggered with Wall Street’s benchmark index, and it’s historically correlated with jaw-dropping future stock returns. But before looking to the future, it’s important to understand the foundation from which the future will be built. The historic volatility exhibited by the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite in April derived from multiple sources — many of which aren’t going to fade from center stage anytime soon. At the top of the list is President Donald Trump’s tariff and trade policy. On April 2, after the markets had closed for the day, Trump unveiled a 10% global tariff and introduced dozens of higher “reciprocal tariff rates” on countries that have traditionally run adverse trade imbalances with America. The unveiling of these tariff rates is what initially caused Wall Street’s major stock indexes to briefly ******. On April 9, the president initiated a 90-day pause on all reciprocal tariffs, save China. Less than five weeks later, the U.S. and China also announced a plan to slash most of their reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. The initial 90-day pause announced on April 9 is what coincides with the largest nominal point gains for all three major stock indexes in their respective histories. This tariff story is far from over. While a small number of trade deals have been announced by the Trump administration, approaching this on a country-by-country basis is going to be painstakingly slow. It also makes it virtually impossible for investors to forecast what’s going to happen more than a few days in advance. But it’s not just tariffs that wreaked havoc on Wall Street. S&P 500 Shiller CAPE Ratio data by YCharts. For instance, the stock market entered 2025 at one of its priciest valuations when back-tested more than 150 years. The S&P 500’s Shiller price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio, which is also referred to as the cyclically adjusted P/E Ratio, or CAPE Ratio, peaked at almost 39 in December 2024, and ended May 20 at a multiple of 36.51. For context, the average Shiller P/E since January 1871 is 17.24. The issue isn’t so much that the Shiller P/E is more than double its historic average (although this isn’t helping). Rather, it’s the historical correlation between a Shiller P/E north of 30 and seemingly inevitable downside. The five previous occasions when the Shiller P/E topped 30 since 1871 were eventually followed by declines of at least 20% in one or more of Wall Street’s major stock indexes. In short, extended valuations tend to be a harbinger of significant downside for stocks. Investors have also been concerned about rapidly rising Treasury bond yields. A noticeable uptick in yields has the potential to boost borrowing costs for consumers and businesses alike. It may also portend an increase in the prevailing rate of inflation, which is widely expected by economists in the wake of Trump implementing global tariffs. To round things out, but also build on the previous point, Moody’s recently downgraded the United States’ credit rating one level from the highest possible (AAA) to AA1. While this downgrade simply follows suit with other credit-rating agencies, it confirms the uneasy ground the U.S. economy is on at the moment. Image source: Getty Images. Though the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite are rife with headwinds, all three indexes have also bounced noticeably off of their 2025 lows. Neither the Dow Jones Industrial Average nor S&P 500 are in correction territory any longer. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq dipped into a bear market in April (its first since 2022) and now sits less than 1,000 points away from reaching a fresh all-time high. These wild gyrations point to one of the odder quirks of investing on Wall Street: When things appear most dire is often when the biggest gains can be made. In many instances, the S&P 500’s largest single-day advances are bunched in very close proximity to the broad-based index’s worst single-session performances. These top performances also tend to occur with increased frequency during bear market and near-bear market declines (i.e., 15% to 19.9% drops). Recently, the S&P 500 has come roaring back to life — and investors who love a good correlation have taken notice. According to data aggregated by Creative Planning’s Chief Market Strategist Charlie Bilello, the S&P 500 rallied by 19.6% (4,983 to 5,958) between April 8, 2025, and May 16, 2025. It marks the 15th time since 1950 that Wall Street’s benchmark index has gained at least 19% over 27 trading days. Yes, this is a bit of an arbitrary number, but play along. Bilello tracked the performance of the previous 14 times the S&P 500 rallied between 19.8% and 30.2% over 27 trading sessions and outlined the total returns, including dividends, of the index spanning seven timelines (ranging from three months to five years). All told, Bilello offered 98 points of total return data for the S&P 500 following these rare events. Bilello’s data set shows the S&P 500 was higher in 97 out of 98 future time frames. The lone outlier was an 11% decline three months after a 20% bounce in the S&P 500 in late 2008, during the height of the Great Recession. Meanwhile, the average gain after five years was 140% following these unique instances. For context, an annualized 10% return in the S&P 500, which is more in line with its long-term average, would have yielded a 61% five-year return. Historical correlations suggest that stocks have been given the green light to skyrocket over the next five years. Although no data points or correlative events can, with 100% accuracy, guarantee directional moves in the stock market, the nonlinear nature of stock market cycles is an irrefutable truth that works in favor of long-term-minded investors. According to Bespoke Investment Group, the average S&P 500 bear market since the start of the Great Depression in 1929 has lasted just 286 calendar days, which works out to about 9.5 months. In comparison, the typical bull market has endured for 1,011 calendar days (and this was as of June 2023), which is 3.5 times longer than bear markets. Emotion-driven moves lower in the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite continue to be surefire opportunities for long-term investors to pounce. 7. Mother of murdered teen Conner Marshall fears justice reforms Mother of murdered teen Conner Marshall fears justice reforms Gwyn Loader Chief correspondent, Newyddion S4C ‘His face was just a mass of bruising’ A mother whose teenage son was murdered by a convicted offender on probation says she fears proposed changes to the justice system. Conner Marshall, 18, of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, was beaten to death by David Braddon in March 2015 in a case of mistaken identity. But plans to deal with prison overcrowding would see more prisoners in Wales and England, including some serious offenders, eligible for early release after serving a third of their sentence. Mr Marshall’s mother, Nadine Marshall, is concerned reforms announced by Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood, including increased use of tagging and home detention, will put even more strain on the probation service “The problems are going to be magnified because the system isn’t fit for purpose as it is,” she said. The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) said the *** government inherited a criminal justice system “in crisis” but would include £700 million to fund “intensive supervision” of released prisoners by the Probation Service. Mrs Marshall responded: “I’m not confident in the slightest. “That money is just going to plug holes. “The staffing isn’t there, the processes aren’t there, the systems aren’t there for probation to actively be able to deal with the workload they have.” Mr Marshall was killed at Trecco Bay caravan park in Porthcawl, Bridgend county, in a drink and drug-fuelled attack. At the time, Braddon, 26, of Caerphilly, was subject to two community orders following his conviction for drug offences and assaulting a police officer, but was classified as a low-risk offender. He was among 244 criminals on probation who were charged with ******* in Wales and England between January 2020 and March 2024 – an average of one a week – according to statistics shared with BBC Wales-produced Newyddion S4C. At the inquest into Mr Marshall’s death, the coroner heavily criticised the Probation Service, particularly the “woefully inadequate” management of Braddon’s inexperienced new case worker. An MOJ spokesperson said: “Our thoughts remain with the victims of these horrific crimes and their families. “A 45% uplift in funding for the service will allow us to tag and monitor tens of thousands more offenders in the community. And we are on track to have recruited 2,300 probation officers by March next year.” South Wales Police David Braddon is serving a life sentence But an independent sentencing review has suggested wider use of probation services and the third sector in managing offenders after release from prison. It was carried out by the former Conservative Lord Chancellor David Gauke after prisons across Wales and England almost reached capacity last summer. It acknowledged the probation service is also currently “under great strain”. Mahmood told the Commons on Thursday she accepted most of the proposals but stopped short of allowing the most serious offenders from being released early and said nobody jailed for terror offences would be eligible. Between July 2024 and March 2025, the *** government recruited 1,000 probation officers and has set a target of recruiting a further 1,300 this financial year 2025-26. National Association of Probation Officers broadly supports the government announcement but warned proper investment must accompany the burden on staff. “We have long been saying if the prison system is full and it is, so is probation,” general secretary Ian Lawrence told Newyddion S4C. “Can the probation service cope with what will be a new cohort of early releases in Spring next year once this is all enacted? Not at the current rate of progress. “We currently have a system where staff are working massive hours under massive pressure just to cope with what I would call business as usual.” Source link #Mother #murdered #teen #Conner #Marshall #fears #justice #reforms Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Simpson put his body on the line by getting down low and bracing for contact from Power defender Logan Evans, but came off second-best as the bodies collided. Bailey Banfield was substituted into the contest within minutes. “That looks like a bad AC (joint). Not great,” Fox Footy analyst Matthew Pavlich said. Simpson was making just his third appearance of the season – and fifth in total – having shown impressing early signs in his new role as a rebounding defender. 9. Multiple injured after tree falls during Diablo Valley College graduation Multiple injured after tree falls during Diablo Valley College graduation PLEASANT HILL, Calif. – A tree fell near the stadium at Diablo Valley College shortly at the end of the graduation ceremony Friday evening, causing multiple injuries. What we know **** Fire officials said there were a handful of injuries, but it does not appear that the tree fell upon people or that anyone was trapped underneath it. However, witnesses told KTVU there were people trapped under the tree for some amount of time. Diablo Valley College said around 12 people who were standing on a walkway were injured when the tree fell shortly before 7 p.m. A spokesperson said the injured were bystanders watching the ceremony. The severity of the injuries is unknown, but at least two people were taken to local hospitals for treatment. School officials say all the victims were conscious, but beyond that there’s no word on the condition of those hospitalized. School officials said police and EMT personnel were already present per their event protocols, but additional emergency personnel arrived to treat those hurt. What we don’t know “We do not know the circumstances of why the tree fell,” said Jennifer Ortega, director of communications for the Contra Costa Community College District. “We were able to complete the graduation and an announcement was made for people to stay clear so that some response vehicles could get through.” Ortega says none of those injured were graduates–since they were all on stage at the time. School officials say they do regularly assess and maintain the trees on campus, and remove trees if necessary. Officials are already looking into exactly what caused the tree to fall, and will continue their investigation over the coming days. Tree falls at Diablo Valley College The college’s maintenance and operations teams removed the tree, school officials said. What they’re saying “The safety of our students and visitors to our campus is our top priority. We deeply regret that this incident occurred during this milestone occasion. We congratulate all of our graduates and hope they are able to celebrate with their loved ones this evening,” Diablo Valley College said in a statement. 10. Oblivion Remastered’s Dark Brotherhood Is Worth Joining Even if You’re Roleplaying as a Hero Oblivion Remastered’s Dark Brotherhood Is Worth Joining Even if You’re Roleplaying as a Hero The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered made us all come back to some of our favorite childhood experiences. But it also made us come back to one of Bethesda Game Studios’ best quests ever. If you don’t know yet, we’re talking about the Dark Brotherhood questline. It’s one of the best ever, but should you join the Brotherhood? Most Oblivion Remastered players cast themselves as noble heroes, so the idea of joining a death cult of assassins like the Dark Brotherhood might seem like a hard no. After all, it starts with murdering an innocent person; how does it make sense? Despite that, it’s one of the best questlines in RPG history. Here’s why its pros far outweigh the cons. The pros of joining the Dark Brotherhood in the Oblivion Remaster The Dark Brotherhood questline is still one of the best we’ve seen from Bethesda across all their RPGs. From the chilling moment Lucien Lachance appears at your bedside after your first innocent kill, to the final, blood-soaked twists within the ****** Hand, each quest is full of detail and dark mystery, and we love it. The characters also have some of the best writing in the game. Comment byu/AkimboJesus from discussion inoblivion If you can stomach the moral implications of this questline, the Brotherhood rewards you generously. You can get early access to unique gear like the Blade of Woe and Shadowmere, the game’s best mount. These can make your playthrough much easier. You’ll also earn a steady stream of gold, and eventually, you’ll gain the ability to become a Listener, netting you 200 gold per in-game week. Ironically, joining the Dark Brotherhood also contributes to the hero’s journey aspect of the game, in a way. The Hero of Kvatch begins the game as a prisoner, a blank slate with a murky past. It can mark a dark chapter in your character’s journey. A fall from grace, a moment of weakness, or even a necessary evil to save someone else. Some real Darth Vader type stuff, you know. The missions are no joke either. The quests you get often let you take different approaches. Stealth, deception, or outright violence. They are all options, and it makes the entire questline feel more than just the typical RPG fetch or kill quests. Unlike other guilds, the Brotherhood’s missions play out like something you’d read in a George R. R. Martin book. The pros of joining the Dark Brotherhood in the Oblivion Remaster It’s worth it, just do it. | Image Credit: Bethesda Game Studios Firstly, the Dark Brotherhood doesn’t send you a polite letter inviting you to join. Instead, you will have to ******* a completely innocent NPC without provocation. That requirement alone is often where most people draw the line. Especially if they’re trying to play the game as the hero. But this act immediately adds Infamy to your record. Joining the Brotherhood also locks you out of some roleplaying and gameplay options unless you’re willing to work to reclaim your lost virtue. The Infamy you gain not only limits your ability to wear divine gear but also distances you from factions like the Knights of the Nine. If you’re planning to be the symbol of justice and mercy, the consequences of joining the Brotherhood will make that harder. Being a part of the Brotherhood is no light work either. Be warned, the Brotherhood is unforgiving. Kill or steal from a fellow member, and you’ll be expelled. Get caught committing *******, and you’ll face a bounty and potential imprisonment. Unlike the Thieves Guild, the Brotherhood won’t assist you in dealing with the law. Once you’re in, you need to survive on your own. In the end, the pros and cons really don’t end up mattering. Because the cons are part of why the questline is so good in the first place. Regardless of why you choose to join the Brotherhood, it’s worth seeing through at least once. After all, in a fantasy world, even heroes sometimes walk through the shadows. Volunteers from the St Mary Magdalene Church food bank in Gorleston, Norfolk, were invited to the Stena Immaculate cargo vessel, which is docked at the Port of Great Yarmouth, to collect frozen meat and fish. The vessel was towed into the port on 11 April after it was involved in a collision in the North Sea. The Reverend Matthew Price, from St Mary Magdalene Church, said: “This has to rank up there with one of the craziest donations. It’s not often someone rings you up to say they have a cubic metre of meat.” The vessel, which had been transporting jet fuel for the US military, had been travelling to Hull from a Greek port when it was struck by Portuguese-flagged Solong on 10 March. It was towed to Great Yarmouth in April for inspection, where it has remained ever since. St Mary Magdalene Church The donations are said to be able to sustain the church food bank for “several months” Mr Price said he received a call from the crew on the ship who wanted to offload food that was meant to sustain them while at sea. “We had no clue what it was going to be,” he said. The food bank said the donation of meat and fish will sustain it for several months. The organisation runs a weekly community meal on Tuesday for about 60 adults and Mr Price said attendees will see beef and oxtail soup become part of the menu. “One of the biggest costs for sustaining our meal is meat… that will keep us going for a long time… it’s completely random but we were extremely grateful,” he added. St Mary Magdalene Church Mr Price said he had “no clue” the donation was about to be a cubic metre of frozen meat and fish Two volunteers and the food bank’s chef transported the donations off the ship’s gang plank on 15 May. Mr Price said: “It was tragic what happened to that ship and it’s great some good can come from it. “It’s really touching to think all the various connections that were made to make this happen. It makes it more special.” He added the Norwich Foodbank had first received items from the boat and it had put the vessel’s master in contact with the church. 16. Chicago couple locked out of their home for a month after a strange woman moved in with her family and **** dog Chicago couple locked out of their home for a month after a strange woman moved in with her family and **** dog Marcia and Carlton Lee’s month‑long property nightmare on Chicago’s South Side is finally over. The couple have reclaimed their vacant house — one they’re trying to sell — after police arrested and removed a stranger who moved in with her family, with paperwork to suggest she owned it. “I knew the ID was fake,” Marcia told ABC 7 Chicago. “I knew the documentation was fake. I’m just super excited that they finally got her out.” Don’t miss The woman in question — Shermaine Powell‑Gillard — now faces a stack of felony and misdemeanor charges. The Lees have to clean up a mess of trash and some minor damage in the home before they put it back on the market, but they’re just grateful to have it back. “It brings peace to my household,” Carlton said. “That’s what I need.” Why it took four weeks for the stranger to vacate The Lees’ trouble began in early April, when they arrived at the vacant property to show it to a realtor and prospective buyer and discovered a woman who introduced herself as “Stacy” living inside. She presented mortgage documents and photo ID that, at first glance, appeared legitimate. Officers called to the scene treated the confrontation as a civil dispute and said they lacked the authority to remove her. Illinois law requires property owners to evict squatters under the Forcible Entry and Detainer Act, a process that can drag on for months. Read more: This is how American car dealers use the ‘4-square method’ to make big profits off you — and how you can ensure you pay a fair price for all your vehicle costs Frustrated by the situation, the Lees approached ABC7 for help. Marcia noted that on the supposed mortgage documents the woman presented, the property PIN matched a different home. Following media coverage, police revisited the evidence and concluded the ID and mortgage file were indeed fakes. Officers escorted Powell‑Gillard out of the home and charged her with forgery, burglary, obstructing identification, and criminal trespass. She has since been released and is awaiting her trial. The Lees have boarded up every window and door of their vacant home to make sure they don’t have to deal with a repeat of the situation. Meanwhile, Illinois state representative La Shawn Ford is looking to change the existing eviction legislation so owners don’t have to go through the Forceable Entry Act and go to court to evict squatters. Under his proposed law, police could remove a squatter as soon as the legitimate homeowner can prove they own the home. The Illinois Senate has passed the bill but it awaits a House vote. Protect your vacant property from squatters Reports of squatting are on the rise across the United States, though it remains relatively rare. Experts say that a tight housing market, slow civil courts, and social-media how-to guides have emboldened squatters. Until legislation catches up, here are a few practical safeguards to protect your own vacant property: Get surveillance cameras Install cameras in secure, difficult-to-reach places. If a squatter claims a legal right to the home, footage can prove they broke in and move the case from civil to criminal court. Ask neighbors to keep an eye out Talk to your neighbors and let them know the home is vacant. Ask them to call or text you if they see anyone at the house so you can take action quickly. Remove or replace lock boxes If you’re using a lock box for realtor access, make sure it has a hard-to-guess code. For example, don’t use 1234 or the street number. Consider installing a keypad lock, which can have longer codes, or leaving the key with a property manager instead. Consider the pros and cons of for-***** signs While signs can help sell or rent your home, they also let squatters know a house is empty. If you’re worried about squatters, consider sticking to online listings. And if squatters do move in? Get the police involved and turn over as much information as possible. Don’t take matters into your own hands — you could wind up with legal trouble of your own. Hopefully, legal reforms will give homeowners across the U.S. more power to remove squatters. Until then, preventive measures remain your first and best line of defense. What to read next This article provides information only and should not be construed as advice. 18. Zoo animals to get more space in ‘long overdue’ ******** reforms Zoo animals to get more space in ‘long overdue’ ******** reforms Jonny Humphries & Esme Stallard BBC News BBC Chester Zoo has welcomed the changes and already developed plans to increase the size of its elephant enclosure Zoos will be legally required to give animals more enclosure space as “long overdue” animal ******** reforms come into force. The Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said new standards published on Saturday would modernise British zoo practices for the first time in over a decade. Under the changes, elephants must be given larger habitats and the legislation will bring an end to practices like the long-term tethering of birds of prey and letting visitors touch fish and cephalopods such as rays and octopuses. Jamie Christon, chief executive of Chester Zoo, told the BBC he welcomed the changes, and the process of rolling them out had already begun. Zoos and aquariums will face a two-year timeline to adapt to the changes, which will also require them to improve conservation standards and safety measures when keeping dangerous animals. Mr Christon said the zoo had been working with Defra to develop the reforms and they were not a “major surprise”. Jamie Christon, chief executive of Chester Zoo, said the reforms had been delayed for years “These standards have been delayed for the last two years, really, as a result of changing governments”, Mr Christon said. “That’s meant that zoos haven’t been able to invest, and now that we’ll be able to get the standards out there, all 196 pages of them.” ‘First step’ Chester Zoo has already planned to increase the size of its elephant enclosure. Animal ******** minister Baroness Hayman said the move was the “first step” in the government’s plan to deliver the “most ambitious ******** reforms in a generation”. She said: “We are a nation of animal lovers, and our best zoos and aquariums are truly world leaders in setting the standard for how wild animals should be kept. “Today’s long-overdue reforms lay the foundation for an even stronger, even more compassionate future for all zoos and aquariums – and the animals they protect.” Dr Jo Judge, CEO of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which represents over 130 zoos and aquariums, said its members have been “working closely” with Defra officials to meet the updated standards. “The new standards are a significant step up in legal requirements and cement Britain’s position as a global leader for zoos and aquariums”, she said. 19. ‘Celebration of life’ or calling hours? Hard feelings follow event at Sterling restaurant ‘Celebration of life’ or calling hours? Hard feelings follow event at Sterling restaurant STERLING — The death of a Fitchburg man and a subsequent event to honor his life has resulted in a dispute between some of his family and a local restaurant. It also spilled over into social media, where many commenters have weighed in. The epicenter of the disagreement is Barber’s Crossing North in Sterling, where the family booked a function room for a “Celebration of Matthew’s Life.” That is how the May 18 event was noted in Matthew Dube’s obituary. He died April 30 at 43 after a short illness, leaving behind his father, two brothers, his wife, two stepchildren and other family members. After the event, a Facebook post from Alicia Brown, Dube’s stepdaughter, claimed the restaurant overcharged the family by $1,500. “They did us wrong and it sucks,” the post said. Brown told the Telegram & Gazette that it was never about the food or quality of service. It was miscommunication, largely on the part of the restaurant. “They messed up,” she said. Aolani Brown, Dube’s wife, declined to comment. Matthew Wallace, whose family owns Barber’s Crossing North, disputes the narrative from Alicia Brown. Wallace said he “feels awful that a young father died so suddenly, but I also have a business to run.” Wallace noted that his restaurant has operated for 30 years, and has hosted many luncheons for families after services held at ******** homes. What happened at Barber’s Crossing on May 18, said Wallace, was calling hours for a ********, not a celebration of life. He said he based his determination on how many people showed up at his restaurant. “The swell of people was incredible,” he said. The guest count reached 150 — a conservative estimate, said Wallace — for a reservation of 100. The crowd spilled over into other parts of the restaurant, and the guests filled up his parking lot, with Wallace lamenting that spaces were taken up for other customers. As for the bill, Wallace said it was made clear to the family during booking that it was $29.99 per head, plus tax and gratuity, and that those charges would also apply to any guests above 100. Wallace said his staff went over the details and charges with the family several times before May 20. Brown’s post noted the family had been in contact with the restaurant for at least a week beforehand to make sure everything was in order. It also mentioned that Barber’s Crossing was her mother’s and Matthew Dube’s favorite date-night Keno spot. The total cost for the “celebration of life” that was arranged with the restaurant was roughly $3,900, said Brown’s post, that included the $29.99 per person charge for 100 people, taxes, tip, and $120 for two cheese plates. While the event ran smoothly for the most part, according to the post, the unexpected happened when the bill came. It was for 150 people, increasing the total amount by $1,500 before taxes. A total of 108 people signed the guest book, said Brown’s post, and the family was told by restaurant management that it would be charged for 150 guests. Wallace said the final bill was approximately $6,000, and that it was paid. “I’m disappointed in barbers,” reads Brown’s post, which noted the family has held gatherings at the restaurant over the years. “The restaurant knew it was a celebration of life. I don’t know why they are saying it was calling hours.” Meanwhile, a representative for Dube’s father, John Dube, and his brothers, Andrew and Stephen Dube, told the Telegram & Gazette that they side with the restaurant’s position that it was calling hours, that the total amount the restaurant charged is appropriate, and that they don’t support what the stepdaughter posted on social media. “It’s sad to think that,” Alicia Brown told the T&G of the position taken by the other side of the family. She explained that her late father never wanted calling hours. “He wanted a celebration of his life, and we tried to get it for him.” Going forward, Wallace said, he’ll have signed contracts with all parties that clearly spell out all charges and expectations. That’s not how Wallace used to do business, he said, as all details and charges were discussed in-person or by email. Brown also mentioned in her post the importance of a contract. “We now know in the future to have a contract written out or pre payment before the event.” Some social media posts were sympathetic to Alicia Brown’s accounting of events, while others wondered why the family would hold calling hours at a restaurant. Brown is moving on. “I’m done telling the story over and over,” her post said. “Two sides to every story right. Make your own opinion. Just sharing our experiences.” Contact Henry Schwan at *****@*****.tld. Follow him on X: @henrytelegram. 20. We have a chance to prevent AI decimating Britain’s creative industries – but it’s slipping away | Beeban Kidron We have a chance to prevent AI decimating Britain’s creative industries – but it’s slipping away | Beeban Kidron For months now, legends of music, literature, product design, the visual arts and more have been sounding the alarm about the British government’s plan to undermine copyright law. The fight kicked off when the government launched a consultation into regulating artificial intelligence with its own “preferred” outcome: letting AI companies steal copyrighted work by default unless the owners of that work “opt out”. But opting out is impossible to do without AI transparency. The plan is a charter for theft, since creatives would have no idea who is taking what, when and from whom. When the government stoops to a preferred outcome that undermines the moral right to your work and income, you might reasonably be angered. As Elton John said last weekend: “The government have no right to do this to my songs. They have no right to do it to anybody’s songs, or anybody’s prose.” His is just one voice among the thousands of British creators who are crying foul. My colleagues and I from all sides in the House of Lords have acted where the government has refused, adding emergency transparency measures to the legislation – the data (use and access) bill – that is passing through parliament. Our amendment would allow existing copyright law to be enforced: copyright owners would understand when, where and by whom their work was being stolen to train AI. The logic being that if an AI firm has to disclose evidence of theft, it will not steal in the first place. These measures, voted for in ever-increasing numbers by lords from all parties – and notable grandees from the government’s own backbenches – were voted down by a government wielding its significant, if reluctant, majority. But the Lords’ resistance did finally bring the secretary of state for technology, Peter Kyle, to the dispatch box on Thursday. Here, he bewilderingly admitted that “much content has already been used and subsumed by AI models, usually from other territories and under the current law” – meanwhile taking out the Lords’ provisions that would prevent that very theft. He mentioned his love for Kate Bush, one of more than 400 people, along with Paul McCartney and Ian McKellen, who signed a letter to the prime minister asking for a change of policy. But his policy resolutely remained unchanged. No transparency, no timeline and no help for creatives. Again, this week, the government missed its chance to get this right. To support one of our greatest industrial sectors, which provides 2.4m jobs and contributes £126bn and a whole lot of joy to the ***’s four nations. Not one MP from any side came to the government’s rescue. On the contrary, Kyle was subjected to a barrage of interventions that expressed an emergency he was failing to deal with. As one MP told me afterwards: “One of our greatest industrial sectors is on fire and ministers are having a picnic on the lawn with the arsonists.” With its enormous majority, the government will be able to bully its way to victory on any given bill. But a win for the government is a catastrophe for the creative industries and Britain’s indigenous AI economy (which, incidentally, has been critical of the government’s approach for the way it favours the larger US players). Britain’s creative industries embody our history, they hold our shared truth and they tell our national story. A nation that gives away its capacity to tell its own story is a fragile place indeed. But the fight isn’t over yet – the data (use and access) bill returns to the Lords on 2 June. 22. Expert calls Musk’s ‘Doge’ involvement ‘one of the greatest brand destructions’ | Elon Musk Expert calls Musk’s ‘Doge’ involvement ‘one of the greatest brand destructions’ | Elon Musk The prominent US marketing professor Scott Galloway says Elon Musk’s decision to implement brutal job and spending cuts within the federal government on behalf of the Trump administration was “one of the greatest brand destructions” ever. Speaking on Friday’s episode of the popular Pivot podcast, which he co-hosts, Galloway said Trump’s billionaire businessman adviser alienated the customer base of his electrical vehicle manufacturer Tesla – one of his most important holdings – while aligning himself with a president whose allies aren’t interested in the kinds of cars the company makes. Galloway then cited polling which suggested Tesla had fallen from the eighth-most reputable brand in 2021 to 95th. “He’s alienated the wrong people,” Galloway remarked. “Three-quarters of Republicans would never consider buying an EV. So he’s cozied up to the people who aren’t in EVs.” Galloway also rattled off figures maintaining that Tesla’s sales were down 59% in France, 81% in Sweden, 74% in the Netherlands, 66% in Denmark, 50% in Switzerland and 33% in Portugal after Musk sought to intervene in various European political affairs in recent months. Many in Europe, a lucrative EV market, were put off by Musk’s meddling. And Tesla’s ******** competitor BYD outsold the Austin-based company in Europe for the first time ever in April, a report from Jato Dynamics, which supplies automotive industry intelligence. “This has arguably been one of the greatest brand destructions,” Galloway said to his co-host, veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher. “Tesla was a great brand. “He’s alienated his core demographic.” The federal job and spending cuts attributed to Musk stem from his involvement leading the so-called department of government efficiency (Doge) during Trump’s second US presidency, which began in January. Musk landed the role after his super political action committee donated $200m to Trump’s successful run in November to return to the White House after he lost the 2020 election as the incumbent. Opinion polling since has suggested strong disapproval of the work Musk has done for Trump, including some research showing a majority of voters disliked the way the businessman and Doge had dealt with federal government employees in particular as the department slashed jobs. Toward the end of April, Tesla was reporting a 71% dip in profits – and, on an earnings call with Tesla investors, Musk said he would start pulling back from his role at Doge beginning in May. Musk said his work getting the government’s “financial house in order is mostly done” and therefore his “time allocation to Doge will drop significantly”. One nonpartisan research group, the Partnership for Public Service, estimated in late April that about $160bn in cuts touted by Doge were on track to cost roughly $135bn.
