  1. Complete Ultron Guide – Best Builds, Abilities, and Pro Tips Complete Ultron Guide – Best Builds, Abilities, and Pro Tips Ultron’s arrival in Marvel Rivals will dominate every team, as players will rush to insta-lock him when he drops on May 30th. Being a strategist won’t stop him from dealing massive damage to those he considers inferior—Stark needs to watch out if he wants to maintain his kill streak. What makes him a terrifying strategist is the fact that he can fly, making him the first flying healer in the game, which has unprecedented potential. Pair that with his kit, and you get a hybrid like Adam Warlock, minus the abysmal movement. Kicking off the mid-season event with an explosive arrival, here’s everything you need to know about Stark and Pym’s sentient robot who thinks he’s better than everyone, and that might just be true in Marvel Rivals. Ultron’s abilities breakdown: How each skill works in Marvel Rivals Ultron, being a strategist by classification, means most of his abilities will heal teammates. But if you think he’ll falter when it comes to dealing damage, you’re gravely mistaken. Having a base health of 275, here’s a breakdown of all his abilities and what they do in Marvel Rivals: Encephalo-Ray: Ultron’s primary fire is an energy beam that he unleashes. This can be used to target and damage enemies, but it won’t heal teammates, much like Warlock’s primary fire. It’s similar to Iron Man’s unibeam, except it deals burn damage. Dynamic Flight: This is Ultron’s flight ability that enables him to dash in the direction of movement. It helps to get out of dicey situations, and this is the ability that sets Ultron apart from other strategists. Talk about being superior. Other than that, his free flight mode is similar to Human Torch’s base flight. Imperative: Patch: Ultron deploys a giant drone to follow an ally, healing other allies within its radius, and also offers extra healing for the selected ally. An impressive ability that not only heals an ally but also takes care of others in the area. Ultron doesn’t seem that hateful after all. Imperative: Firewall: This is Ultron’s secondary fire, and as the name suggests, he summons drones to create a firewall that provides bonus health to nearby teammates, focusing on both Ultron and the ally selected with Imperative: Patch. This ability will come in handy when capturing objectives or holding them. Rage of Ultron: Ultron’s ultimate ability summons Ultron drones to unleash Encephalo-Rays with an AoE splash effect, healing nearby allies and damaging opponents at the same time. This will not only help clear enemy clusters but also increase the team’s overall survivability. That’s all of Ultron’s abilities in Marvel Rivals, and from the looks of it, he’s shaping up to be an absolute unit of a healer. But wait, there’s a whole lot more, as it’s merely the beginning of the Age of Ultron. Best Ultron builds for maximum damage and survivability in Season 2.5 More than just a strategist | Image Credit: NetEase Games Ultron, being a hybrid in Marvel Rivals, should be used as one, and that’s one of the best builds for him to ensure maximum damage and survivability in Season 2.5. His abilities can heal teammates and damage opponents from great distances, so there’s no reason to be pushing the enemy’s backline. Play defensively and heal teammates from above. Keep an eye out for flanking enemies, as Marvel Rivals players tend to flank a lot, looking at you, Spider-Man mains. But other than that, keep using your abilities at the right time, and you should be good. Ironically, the best build for Ultron requires Iron Man on the team since he has a team-up ability with him called Stark Protocol, as revealed in Dev Vision Vol. 06. This team-up allows Ultron to shoot Stark’s unibeam that pierces teammates, healing them while also damaging enemies through them. So, Ultron’s best build that ensures massive damage and maximum survivability requires him to shake hands with the person he hates the most. He can probably set aside his differences for this one since the fate of the team is at stake. Top team compositions to pair with Ultron in Marvel Rivals With Ultron on the team, the inherent sense of having the perfect team composition in Marvel Rivals rises, since he is a strategist, and a great team requires heroes who can take damage with a smile. Here are the top team compositions to pair with Ultron in the game: Iron Man, Storm, and Human Torch are all flight duelists who are hard to reach when you’re playing with ground healers like Cloak & Dagger, Luna Snow, Adam Warlock, etc. Here, Ultron can make use of his flight ability to provide sufficient healing to these flying duelists while also having the team-up ability with Iron Man, ensuring no one gets overlooked. Tanks like Venom, Thor, Hulk, and Captain America can dive the backlines well, and hold point when needed. Ultron’s Imperative: Patch ability can help these tanks get the additional healing when holding down the point for others to catch up. Spider-Man, Iron Fist, and ****** Panther are characters who are extremely agile, which makes them particularly hard to heal. Ultron can make quick work of his abilities, especially Imperative: Patch, to assign a drone to them, giving them the required healing without the need to follow them everywhere. These team compositions in Marvel Rivals will guarantee your team’s survival on the battlefield and will make the best use of Ultron’s abilities. His disdain for humanity won’t stop him from locking in with his teammates when needed. Pro tips and strategies to master Ultron in competitive matches Ultron’s army is at your disposal | Image Credit: NetEase Games In Marvel Rivals, the basic pro tip for mastering Ultron in competitive is to not rush the backline for the love of *****. Ultron can deal great damage, sure, but that doesn’t mean he should be at the frontline of the battle. Play aggressively but not too aggressively and don’t get greedy. His flight ability is perfect for dealing damage as well as healing teammates from a distance, so don’t go flying into the lion’s den. Get your ultimate charged up, then push the backline with your team to heal them as you wipe out the clusters and prevent opponents from running back to spawn to regain health. If Iron Man is on your team, use his team-up ability to deal damage to enemies by piercing your allies, healing them in the process, as the beam does both simultaneously. Get behind tanks to receive additional protection, heal them with the beam, and damage enemies in front of them to get the best of both worlds. Ultron’s flight and dash will also help in tactical retreats, so whenever you find yourself in a sticky situation, and you undoubtedly will in competitive matches, use his Dynamic Flight ability to retreat, but make sure you don’t abandon your teammates. That’s everything you need to know about Ultron in Marvel Rivals. Now, it’s up to you to use him once he drops next week, beginning Season 2.5 and infecting the Hellfire Gala with his virus. 2. Be prepared for a shock Up North Be prepared for a shock Up North If you’re headed Up North for the holiday weekend, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is warning that you may be in for an unpleasant surprise: The tree damage from a deadly spring ice storm may be unsettling. It’s so bad, the agency charged with maintaining state parks, forests and recreation areas sent an email to Michiganders on Wednesday that cautioned the lush-green landscape that you are used to, “may look different.” To put the storm damage in context, the state DNR said, it covers more than 3 million acres. That, according to the state, is an even larger area than was destroyed in the Great Michigan Fire of 1871, which every Michigan third grader learns swept across the state and burned down about 2.5 million acres of forests. More: How Michigan’s Great Fire of 1881 launched American Red Cross disaster relief The DNR is still trying to clear debris, but it also is now fighting tree-killing pests, such as native pine bark beetles that thrive in areas with stressed, damaged pine trees and fresh pine debris. The ice storm hit the Midwest in late March, bringing freezing rain and sleet to northern Lower Michigan. Icicles weighed down limbs and snapped the trunks of trees — many pine — like twigs. It also wreaked havoc in other parts of the state. In Kalamazoo County, a tree struck a vehicle, killing three children, ages 11, 4 and 2. The state’s new warning calls for ongoing vigilance. It urges vacationers to look up for weakened and dangling limbs that could fall, and look down to avoid tripping on branches that are now on the ground, and could create hazards underfoot, especially in wooded areas. It asks hikers and ATV riders to “respect all nonmotorized and motorized trail closures,” and to stay on reopened trails and not venture off the paths to avoid potential dangers, including “numerous leaning trees and hanging tree limbs.” More: Expert offer tips on how to limit distracted driving this holiday weekend It says those planning to be on the water, who may be fishing or paddling, to be aware that the waterways are filled with downed trees and branches, too, and to be cognizant that some boat launches may be closed. And it reminds visitors that while most state park campgrounds and lodging areas have reopened, some of the state forest campgrounds, state forest roads, trails and bathrooms and showers still may be temporarily unavailable. Review – The Midnight Walk (PC) | WayTooManyGames Review – The Midnight Walk (PC) | WayTooManyGames WTMG’s Leo Faria: “I gave a lot of emphasis on the presentation because, to be fair, the story and the gameplay weren’t that engaging. I kept playing The Midnight Walk, and enjoying my time with it, because it was just a blessing for my eyes (and occasionally for my ears). By featuring the bare minimum of gameplay to make it stand out from other walking simulators, it’s vastly more enjoyable than most of its peers. That being said, it’s a one-and-done experience at best. One that you should probably try out in VR, unlike the flat version I reviewed, if you have the means to do so.” Source link #Review #Midnight #Walk #WayTooManyGames Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. Who needs DCE? Savala shines as Roosters stun Sharks Who needs DCE? Savala shines as Roosters stun Sharks Hugo Savala has led a depleted Sydney Roosters side to a 42-16 win over Cronulla that will ignite questions over the NRL glamour club’s pursuit of veteran halfback Daly Cherry-Evans. Savala stole the show at Industree Group Stadium in Gosford, the 23-year-old scoring a try, contributing three try assists and outgunning Sharks halfback Nicho Hynes on his home patch. Leading a Roosters side missing five State of Origin players and three NRL regulars through injury, No.7 Savala delivered the most mature display of his nine-game first-grade career on Saturday. Savala’s long-term future at the Roosters has been subject to scrutiny this season, with his agent declaring he would explore loan options if Trent Robinson does what many expect him to do and lands the signature of Manly veteran Cherry-Evans. But on the evidence so far this season – and with Sam Walker still sidelined for a further month with an anterior cruciate ligament injury – Savala and Sandon Smith look to be bona fide NRL playmakers. The Roosters led 14-0 in as many minutes, with left winger Daniel Tupou catching and grounding two pin-point Savala kicks to the air. Both tries were converted by Smith, who added a penalty and finished the night with seven goals from eight attempts. Cronulla finally had some decent attack 15 minutes in, and on their first real foray forward the Sharks crashed over through Cameron McInnes. But the Roosters didn’t go into their shell and instead combined for one of the plays of the season. Beginning in their own half, Savala started and finished it. He and Mark Nawaqanitawase combined to put Dom Young away down the right edge. The English winger burned KL Iro, then flicked a one-handed offload inside to James Tedesco, who tipped on to a supporting Savala to score. More woe was to come for the Sharks, with winger Ronaldo Mulitalo sin-binned for a shoulder-charge on Nawaqanitawase as the winger set the wheels in motion for Savala’s try. The Sharks weathered the storm to trail 20-6 at halftime, but another Savala kick moved the Chooks out of reach. This time it was to the right wing, and while Young missed the ball, it fell kindly for former Wallabies winger Nawaqanitawase, who crashed over for his eighth try in nine NRL games. Debutant Roosters prop Xavier Va’a crashed in on just his second touch in the NRL, before Cronulla launched a late and short-lived fightback. Iro and Mulitalo crossed in the final 20 minutes, before Tedesco and Young wrapped up a deserved Roosters victory with late tries. 9. West Aussies stuck with higher power bills than national average as the cost of energy rises West Aussies stuck with higher power bills than national average as the cost of energy rises West Australians are being slugged some of the highest prices in the nation for tasks around the house as basic as heating, cooking and doing the laundry, new figures show. The cost of power for daily routines has been laid bare in a new crunch by insurance and utility comparison service iSelect, revealing at least 10 chores and appliances that cost more in WA than the national average. The biggest money drainers are air conditioning, with heating and cooling topping the chart, and running an electric heater following behind. General manager of utilities at iSelect Julia Paszka said that sandgropers were having to fork out a higher bill on average than the rest of the nation. “Western Australia has the third highest electricity prices in the country, which means everyday appliances can really drive up power bills,” she said. Comparisons on power costs are common in the rest of the country because deregulated electricity markets allow consumers to switch providers and retailers — though critics of the east coast system say deregulation has led to higher prices overall. WA’s State-regulated power network means there are only options for different providers in few circumstances. The analysis by iSelect is the first the comparison website has conducted, allowing Australians to understand how much their energy bills cost. “To calculate these costs, we analysed the average energy consumption of common household appliances and the approximate time each activity takes to complete. We then worked out the cost of each task based on hourly energy prices in each State,” Ms Pazska said. Only NSW and South Australia had higher costs, she said, largely due to elevated wholesale prices — due to reduced coal supply, network limitations, and increased demand “Both States are also in the middle of a major shift to renewable energy, which can push prices up in the short term, especially in NSW following the closure of the Liddell Power Station, and in SA, where gas is often used when renewables can’t meet demand,” Ms Pazka said. WA’s Synergy and Horizon Power declined to comment on the analysis. Ms Paszka said though the independent electricity grid in WA, and its more regulated market, helped to insulate it from some pressures seen in NSW and SA, other factors pushed prices higher. “WA’s electricity prices are pushed higher by the cost of servicing a small population spread across a vast area, including many remote communities,” she said. “Unlike other States that rely more heavily on renewables, WA continues to depend on gas-fired power, which can be more expensive to generate and distribute.” The State Government has committed to phasing out coal-fired power by 2030, to be replaced by renewables. But in the meantime, iSelect recommends some straightforward ways to save on bills — particularly as West Australians reach for the heating as winter approaches. Switching appliances off at the power point when not in use, naturally trapping heat in the house, opting for energy efficient appliances like air fryers over ovens and timing energy usage. “Energy companies typically charge higher rates for electricity during peak hours, usually from 4pm to 9pm, when everyone is home and using power for heating, cooking, and entertainment,” Ms Paszka said. “If you can adjust your habits to run your appliances outside peak times, you can save a significant amount on your bill.” Source link #West #Aussies #stuck #higher #power #bills #national #average #cost #energy #rises Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  11. ********* Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Nicole Williams English says she was ‘literally crawling out of bed’ before starting treatment for low testosterone ********* Sports Illustrated Swimsuit model Nicole Williams English says she was ‘literally crawling out of bed’ before starting treatment for low testosterone Nicole Williams English is back to feeling like herself again. The 41-year-old ********* model recently told Yahoo Canada that she’s prioritizing her health by working out regularly, eating healthfully and continuing hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for low testosterone. Williams English, who appears in the latest issue of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit, said she began noticing she was extremely run down when her daughter, India Moon, was about 18 months old. This article is for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. Contact a qualified medical professional before engaging in any physical activity, or making any changes to your diet, medication or lifestyle. “I would get 10 hours of sleep and wake up feeling like I had one-and-a-half hours of sleep. I couldn’t open my eyes. I was dizzy, I wasn’t feeling myself,” she said. “…I was very moody. I was snapping at everybody in the morning. I wasn’t depressed, but I was just kind of mad. Angry at everything. Everything was a catastrophe for me… I was having really bad anxiety.” Williams English, pictured with husband and retired NFL player Larry English, said HRT has helped her regain energy. (Image via Getty Images) Williams English’s husband, retired NFL player Larry English, put her in touch with a doctor based in Florida who ordered bloodwork and a full hormone panel. The results showed that she was low in testosterone, and would require daily medication to help balance her testosterone levels. “I thought I would just go to (the pharmacy), get my iron pills, get my D3, but no. Until I did a deep dive and they really looked at my blood, I never would have known,” she said. “I was literally crawling out of bed. I was really, really exhausted.” Now that Williams English has found a dosage that works for her, she has the energy to keep up with a toddler and continue to grow her career. But what is HRT and how do you know if you have low testosterone? Keep reading to learn more. Hormone replacement therapy and low testosterone Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is more than just a treatment option for women in menopause. Although HRT gained popularity in the ‘90s as a form of treatment to help lessen menopause symptoms — which greatly impact a woman’s quality of life — its uses are not limited to treating brain fog, hot flashes and other side effects from low estrogen and progesterone. HRT can also be used for women with low testosterone levels. But it’s not as straightforward as it may seem. “Testosterone is a really important hormone in women… but it is one that has been poorly studied and really only focused on niche areas like libido and sexuality,” said Dr. Michelle Jacobson, an OBGYN and co-founder of Coven Women’s Health, in an interview with Yahoo Canada. While testosterone does impact women’s libido, it also impacts things like mood, energy levels and bone and muscle health, as well as menstrual cycle and fertility. HRT can take many forms, including pills, creams, gels and injections. (Image via Getty Images) What are the signs of low testosterone in women? Symptoms of low testosterone in women can include: Jacobson, who did not treat Williams English, explained that the lack of quality information and evidence makes it difficult to measure and understand lower levels of testosterone in women, since women already naturally have lower testosterone levels than men. Without sufficient research, there’s a gap in understanding what testosterone levels in women mean for their functioning and how they feel. “We’re left with many years of kind of poor evidence that don’t really answer the questions that we should have been asking,” Jacobson said. “So we don’t have strong evidence to direct the use of testosterone one way or another.” Although there are currently no Health Canada approved testosterone medications for women in Canada and no federally approved testosterone drugs for women in the U.S., Jacobson said healthcare providers can repurpose and prescribe testosterone medications that are approved for men at much lower doses. What are the side effects of testosterone HRT for women? HRT for testosterone can be in the form of gels and creams, injections, implanted pellets or oral medications. Although there are benefits to using testosterone HRT for women, there can also be side effects. Potential side effects can include: Although some side effects are reversible with hormone level adjustment, there are some like deepening of the voice or clitoral enlargement that are permanent. How do you know if testosterone HRT is right for you? Blood tests can help determine if your hormone levels are low, however Jacobson noted it’s important for healthcare providers to consider the patients symptoms and the potential benefits of testosterone HRT. “We really need to figure out a way to meet in the middle in order to attend to not only the patients needs but their quality of life,” she said. “So much of medicine ignores quality of life and focuses on what is medically necessary or indicated or contraindicated, but that informs a big part of function and compliance and well being.” Speak to your doctor about options regarding hormone replacement therapy. (Image via Getty Images) Why do testosterone levels drop? There are many reasons why women can have low testosterone levels. Testosterone levels naturally begin to drop as women age, particularly around early menopause. However, certain medications, like birth control and acne medications or medications for hair loss can also lower the body’s level of free testosterone (testosterone not attached to protein). Women who have had their ovaries surgically removed or who live with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) can also have lower levels of testosterone. There are multiple factors that impact testosterone levels, including lifestyle factors like poor nutrition, sleep deprivation, prolonged stress, substance abuse, alcohol use and smoking. What can women do to naturally raise testosterone levels? Outside of taking hormone supplements, Jacobson said there are things women can do to help naturally raise testosterone levels. “Things that you can do to help improve your testosterone are to build more muscle mass and eat more protein,” she said. “It’s sort of a positive reinforcement feedback loop, and that’s just outside of taking exogenous (external) testosterone.” Let us know what you think by commenting below and tweeting @YahooStyleCA! 16. COVID-19: New subvariant NB.18.1 driving increase in infections in WA COVID-19: New subvariant NB.18.1 driving increase in infections in WA A new COVID-19 subvariant is driving an increase in infections in WA, with hospitalisations increasing to an average of 38 per day in the latest figures. That was up from an average of 31 per day in the previous week. The subvariant NB.1.8.1 is now the dominant COVID-19 subvariant in Perth wastewater, with concentrations of the virus also increasing. NB.1.8.1 is behind surging infections in parts of Asia. In Hong Kong, COVID-19 cases and hospitalisations have climbed to the worst levels in the past 12 months. It has recently been detected in the United States as well. Whilst more transmissible, it’s not believed to cause worse symptoms than its antecedents. The World Health Organisation claims NB.1.8.1 is growing rapidly compared to co-circulating variants. COVID-19 vaccines are expected to remain effective against the subvariant in regard to symptomatic and severe disease. “Despite a concurrent increase in cases and hospitalisations in some countries where NB.1.8.1 is widespread, current data does not indicate that this variant leads to more severe illness than other variants in circulation,” it reported on Friday. Influenza activity in WA also increased in the week up to May 18. “While notifications are above the seasonal threshold it does not yet indicate the start of the influenza season,” WA Health reported. More than a quarter of influenza notifications so far in 2025 were in children aged under 15 years. Influenza notifications and hospitalisations are higher than the previous five-year average, while the number of deaths are lower. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) activity remains stable in WA, indicating the RSV season has not started. West Australians are being urged to get their flu jabs, with health authorities warning influenza and respiratory syncytial virus cases are set to rise heading into winter. State-funded free flu jabs are available for all West Australians aged five to 64 — including international visitors and those without a Medicare card — until June 30. Free RSV immunisation is also available for infants and pregnant women. As of Thursday this week, there had been 6528 cases of the flu in WA so far this year — while 469,475 people received the jab. “WA Health encourages all eligible Western Australians to stay up to date with their immunisations and practise good hand and respiratory hygiene,” a spokesperson said. The Smartest High-Yielding Dividend Stocks in the Nasdaq Composite Index to Buy With $1,500 Right Now The Smartest High-Yielding Dividend Stocks in the Nasdaq Composite Index to Buy With $1,500 Right Now Investors may prefer to hunt for strong dividends right now, as opposed to playing in the volatile stock market. While not as many can be found in the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index, there are still several stocks with strong dividends. Good dividend companies have a solid history of regularly paying dividends, and generate enough free cash flow to keep paying the dividend. 10 stocks we like better than Sirius XM › The stock market is anything but normal right now. Not even halfway through the year, the broader benchmark S&P 500 index fell nearly 20% from highs made in February, only to make a full recovery for the year (as of May 22). Investors are still grappling with how high tariffs will ultimately be, the potential impact of a major tax bill being proposed by House Republicans, and whether or not the economy will fall into a recession or see inflation reverse course and rise again. With so many variables, some investors may prefer to find stocks that generate reliable passive income through dividends. Pharmaceutical company Amgen (NASDAQ: AMGN) develops a range of drugs to treat a variety of different diseases and medical conditions. Some of its largest drugs include Enbrel for treatment of several autoimmune diseases, Prolia for osteoporosis, XGEVA for strengthening bones, Otezla for managing inflammation, and Repatha for lowering cholesterol. Amgen is regularly developing new drugs including its much anticipated weight-loss drug MariTide, which the company has recently initiated two phase 3 trials for. Image source: Getty Images. Amgen reported solid first-quarter earnings, with adjusted earnings of $4.90 per share easily beating Wall Street estimates of $4.26. Revenue also grew 9% year over year. Management’s guidance for 2025 remained unchanged and was roughly in line with what analysts had been projecting at the midpoint of the guidance range. The company has regularly paid dividends since 2011 and has increased the dividend in all 14 years as well. The dividend yield is now close to 3.5%. While quarterly free cash flow has trailed dividend payments as of late, management expects free cash flow to rebound to 2023 levels of $7.4 billion, which would easily cover the $5.2 billion of expected dividend payments for the year. Sirius XM (NASDAQ: SIRI) is one of the largest digital audio companies in the U.S. as the operator of Sirius satellite radio and the Pandora music streaming service. The company says it reaches 160 million listeners each month. Sirius has struggled immensely with the stock down about 57% over the last five years (as of May 20). Rising competition and declining subscribers have hit the company hard. Story Continues Management is attempting to turn things around by investing in its tech platform, building out its podcast network, and streamlining its various subscription and pricing offerings. Last September, the company laid out a long-term plan of growing subscribers by 25% to 50 million and increasing free cash flow by 50% to $1.8 billion. But it seems like investors are going to need to be patient. In the first quarter of the year, revenue fell 4.3% year over year, while total U.S. subscribers declined 2%. Management, however, is implementing a cost-savings plan that calls for hitting a $200 million run rate by the end of 2025. Luckily, investors are paid at a 4.9% dividend yield for their time. Sirius has regularly paid and increased its annual dividend since 2017. Additionally, the company’s trailing free-cash-flow yield of close to 10% easily covers the dividend. The stock’s performance hinges on tangible progress, especially regarding subscriber growth; until then, it’s uncertain. But the dividend yield is strong, free-cash-flow generation is robust, and the stock is cheap. Review – Deliver At All Costs (PC) | WayTooManyGames Review – Deliver At All Costs (PC) | WayTooManyGames WTMG’s Leo Faria: “Deliver At All Costs is filled with creative mission ideas, an awesome physics engine and an emphasis on an above-average story, but it’s also marred by technical and design issues, as well as an overall repetitive nature. Its presentation is also a mixed bag, but then again, I don’t think the game is that bad. In fact, there’s a lot to enjoy in it. It is a very unique experience, and it’s so devoid of urgency, it almost feels relaxing at times. You can’t say no to driving through entire houses, destroying them in the process, whilst listening to some good old surf rock from the 50’s.” Source link #Review #Deliver #Costs #WayTooManyGames Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  19. There is an alternative, Labour MPs tell Rachel Reeves There is an alternative, Labour MPs tell Rachel Reeves Iain Watson Political correspondent PA Rachel Reeves has insisted on the need to “get a grip” on the ******** bill Tina – an acronym, not a person – was very popular with the late Lady Thatcher. It was in 1980 that the then prime minister – introducing what were radical economic policies – first insisted “There Is No Alternative”. Although politically on the left, Chancellor Rachel Reeves has used similar rhetoric. She has claimed there is no alternative to last year’s tax-raising budget, blaming the previous Conservative government for a “****** hole” in the public finances. And she has defended making the “difficult decision” to cut ******** payments and restrict eligibility. But an increasing number of Reeves’s fellow MPs across Labour’s political spectrum – from social democrat to hard left – are now begging to differ. The leaking of a memo from Angela Rayner’s department to the Telegraph this week highlighted disagreements at the heart of government. The deputy PM was suggesting tax rises worth £3bn-£4bn while the chancellor was cutting the ******** budget by £5bn. When Gordon Brown was chancellor he would often say he was “receiving representations” from critics with alternative ideas. Rachel Reeves certainly knows how that feels. In a sign that unease in Labour’s ranks is increasing as its polls ratings decrease, the current chancellor now seems to be inundated with suggestions from her own side. From my conversations with Labour MPs, some of these are being put as an alternative to ******** cuts. But there is also a growing realisation that further tax rises are all but inevitable if deeper cuts to unprotected departments – those outside of the NHS, defence, and schools – are to be avoided. Some of those pushing alternative ideas want their names to remain off the record. Others have been openly campaigning for a different approach. EPA-EFE/Shutterstock The leaked memo also called for a higher level of corporation tax on banks Unions such as Unite – along with predominantly left-wing MPs in the Socialist Campaign Group – have called for a new tax on the wealthiest, which they claim could raise as much as £25bn. Another popular demand is for the chancellor to relax her own fiscal rules on borrowing and debt to free up more funds for investment – which in turn, it is hoped, would push up growth. The Treasury has been resistant to a wealth tax, fearful it could scare off investors, and to further changing the fiscal rules (they have already been tweaked once) as they claim this could – to be blunt – freak the markets, and push up interest rates. Reeves’s self-imposed rules require day-to-day government costs to be paid for by tax income, rather than borrowing; and to get debt falling as a share of national income over a five year *******. But some of Reeves’s colleagues argue she can be more bold within her fiscal rules. Squeezing pips The Poole MP Neil Duncan-Jordan – who organised a letter signed by 42 Labour MPs opposing the proposed ******** cuts – has called for the restoration of the 50p top tax rate; and increasing capital gains tax rates to align with income tax. He claims this could bring in £12bn a year. That policy change is also backed, off the record, by some MPs not regarded as on the Left. Jo White is from a different wing of the party – the leader of the Red Wall group of MPs, who largely see Reform *** as their main opponents. She is the MP for Bassetlaw in Nottinghamshire, and has called for the shredding of the “Green Book” – the Treasury ****** which is used to assess the costs and benefits of new projects. She believes the current orthodoxy holds back investment – and therefore growth – in parts of the country which feel overlooked. Off the record, a former Labour cabinet minister strongly agrees. The Crawley MP Peter Lamb is one of the around 100 or so Labour MPs expressing concern about the forthcoming restrictions on eligibility to Personal Independence Payments. He believes the remit of the Office for Budgetary Responsibility – set up by George Osborne as chancellor – needs to be revised. For example, the OBR doesn’t take in to account potential savings from the £1bn that is being invested in getting people back to work. So by not assessing the likely, financially positive, effect of measures that take people off benefits there is more pressure on the chancellor to make cuts to balance the books – or to meet her own rules on getting debt down. Some of his colleagues are more critical of the OBR – one asked why Labour was tying its own hands by adhering to a body set up by an austerity Tory chancellor. Another pondered why the government was making cuts now to meet debt forecasts which are five years hence and are unlikely to be accurate. Demands for reform have also been made from inside the Department of Work and Pensions. Past inspiration Lamb is also one of a number of MPs calling for a new type of windfall tax on companies which made excessive profits from Covid contracts, and for more to be invested in mental health treatment which, in turn, would cut the demand for ******** payments from those struggling with untreated conditions. Former cabinet minister Louise Haigh has called for Labour to reconsider its manifesto pledges not to increase income tax or employee national insurance. Some MPs are still wary of making their demands public. One who has had experience of government told me they were looking for a wider economic reset. And some of the new intake, not on the Left, are looking to the past for inspiration. They are saying that ideas being put forward by Gordon Brown – now making representations of his own – should be taken seriously. Brown has suggested raising around £3bn by doubling taxes on online casinos and bookies. But some of these MPs also believe the current frontbench should be arguing that reducing poverty is good for the economy – and that cutting PIPs will take money out of local economies. Back to the future There have been calls for – perhaps unsurprisingly – greater taxation on multi-nationals and on tech giants. A number of MPs also favour a land tax. Raising revenue from an immovable asset would be difficult to avoid. One ambitious backbencher has backed a land tax and argued for £20bn of revenue-raising, including a revaluation of council tax in England, and higher levies on the savings and investments of high earners. Admittedly, that was in 2018. And that backbencher’s name? Rachel Reeves. Source link #alternative #Labour #MPs #Rachel #Reeves Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force lose in golden point as Waratahs prevail 23-17 Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force lose in golden point as Waratahs prevail 23-17 Western Force’s Super Rugby Pacific season has ended in heartbreaking fashion, as Waratahs winger Darby Lancaster’s incredible acrobatic try secured a 23-17 win golden point win. In a feisty affair played out in wet conditions, the Force came from behind before letting a late lead slip which resulted in an encore of their extra-time ******* against the Hurricanes from earlier this season. For the second time this season, the Force came away without a win from golden point after the two sides were unable to be split after 80 minutes. And the Force’s season finished in sour fashion after the siren in golden point when Lancaster cartwheeled over the try-line in the corner and his effort was approved by the Television Match Official. Camera IconHarry Potter of the Western Force. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images A season which promised so much a month ago, when the Force’s previous golden point draw against the Hurricanes left them in fifth spot, ended with five consecutive losses. And a wooden spoon which seemed unthinkable with the Force in a finals spot for the first half of the season is not off the cards if Fijian Drua and the Highlanders win next week. The Force had led 17-14 at the break after two quick tires, while Carlo Tizzano made history with his 13th five-pointer of the season to become the out-right holder of the record for most tries by a forward in a Super Rugby campaign. Hamish Stewart’s late first-half try for the Force proved to be a flashpoint of sorts; not only did it give them their first lead of the game, it triggered a melee which set off a chain reaction of chagrin which persisted throughout the encounter. Camera IconWestern Force and NSW Waratahs players scuffle after a try. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images But the Force could not make their chances count in the second half as they were held scoreless, and while both teams missed penalties in golden point, it was the Waratahs who ultimately prevailed to keep their own finals hopes alive. The Force were close to beating themselves at numerous points in the first half, like when Ben Donaldson’s pop pass in the fourth minute was picked off by Triston Reilly and taken to the house. But the visitors soon found themselves on the back foot as penalties began to accumulate against them and Tizzano responded when he drove over from close range, taking Joey Walton with him. Waratahs fly-half Tane Edmed was at the heart of the way side’s best moments and he helped the ‘Tahs to a 14-5 lead when his clever chip kick was collected by Darby Lancaster, who then scored after some nice work from Jake Gordon and Hugh Sinclair. Camera IconBayley Kuenzle celebrate with Mac Grealy of the Western Force. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images The Force narrowed the margin to four points in the 33rd minute when Harry Potter and Dylan Pietsch combined down the left edge to allow Bayley Kunzle to gallop free, and his inside pass was carried over by Mac Grealy. And the hosts then took the lead when Stewart smashed through Gordon’s tackle to find the line, which was followed by a prolonged skirmish between the two sides when Stewart took umbrage to the close attention of Fergus Lee-Warner. The pre-break hostilities set the stage for the second half and the Waratahs were guilty of of losing their cool early. Miles Amatosero was penalised for a crude clean-out on Jeremy Williams, Taniela Tupou was sin-binned for an attemped slide tackle Roy Keane would have been proud of and then Angus Bell gave away a penalty for throwing the ball at an opponent. Camera IconBen Donaldson of the Western Force is tackled. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images But even with Tupou yellow-carded, the Force were unable to turn their numerical advantage into points, keeping the Waratahs in the game — and momentum shifted in favour of the Waratahs. As the rain thundered down late, the Force lost Tiaan Tauakipulu to a yellow card, which allowed Jack Bowen to level the scores with a penalty goal. A Potter breakdown penalty gave the Force a penalty near the sidelines as time expired, but Kurtley Beale’s ambitious goal-kick narrowly missed the mark, triggering golden point. Alex Harford’s attempted penalty goal missed the mark, but Bowen failed to convert his own attempt before Lancaster’s acrobatic placement in the corner secured the win. 21. Exxon, Hess to face off over Chevron deal for oilfield riches Exxon, Hess to face off over Chevron deal for oilfield riches By Sheila Dang HOUSTON (Reuters) – Top U.S. oil producer Exxon Mobil and Hess will meet face-to-face on Monday in a court hearing to determine the fate of Chevron’s $53 billion deal to buy Hess and with it a prized stake in Guyana’s prolific oilfields. The planned acquisition, announced in October 2023, is one of the oil industry’s biggest deals in years. It is key to Chevron CEO Mike Wirth’s strategy of improving the oil company’s performance. Exxon and China’s CNOOC, Hess’ partners in Guyana, filed arbitration disputes early last year, which have delayed the deal’s closing and caused Chevron to miss out on increased output and revenue. Hess’ most attractive asset is its 30% stake in the Stabroek Block off the coast of Guyana, operated by Exxon. Guyana is one of the world’s fastest-growing oil producers and the Stabroek Block is estimated to hold more than 11 billion barrels of oil equivalent. Exxon and CNOOC claim that they have a contractual right of first refusal to purchase Hess’ stake in the Guyana field. Chevron and Hess argue the clause does not apply to the ***** of the whole company. If they lose the arbitration and are unable to agree on an acceptable resolution with Exxon and CNOOC, the acquisition would fail, according to the terms of the deal. A three-member arbitration tribunal under the International Chamber of Commerce will analyze the dispute in a confidential hearing that starts on Monday in London. The joint operating agreement in the Stabroek Block between Hess, Exxon and CNOOC is governed by *** law, according to a source familiar with the terms. By the time the hearing kicks off, Hess, Exxon and CNOOC should have already submitted in writing the majority of the testimony that will be considered by the tribunal, according to four international arbitration attorneys who are familiar with the ICC’s procedures. A spokesperson for Hess pointed to a previous filing that said the company expects a decision after the hearing in the third quarter, while an Exxon spokesperson referred back to previous public comments about the case. Chevron and CNOOC did not respond to requests for comment. Prior to the hearing, the companies may submit documents and written statements from witnesses or experts they have called on to support their claims in the dispute. This phase is typically the longest portion of arbitration proceedings, often taking a year, said William Kirtley, managing partner at Aceris Law, a boutique international arbitration law firm. The average ICC arbitration case takes over two years to reach a resolution from the time proceedings are initiated, according to the court’s annual report. Story Continues Hess, Chevron and Exxon have said they expect a resolution in their dispute by the third quarter of this year, which would be about 18 months after Exxon and CNOOC initiated arbitration proceedings. “This is relatively fast for an ICC arbitration, especially when considering the size of the dispute,” Kirtley said. “It suggests that neither party is engaging in delaying tactics to increase the duration of the case.” WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE HEARING On Monday, each party will begin with opening statements before the arbitration tribunal. Witnesses or experts will be cross-examined, having already submitted direct testimony to the tribunal prior to the hearing. The arbitrators will interrogate the claims of each side of the dispute and may also ask questions of the witnesses and experts. Hearings involving large companies or disputes are typically scheduled over the course of five days, three of the attorneys said. Hess, Exxon and CNOOC may elect to give oral closing statements at the end of the hearing, submit a written closing statement, or both. The arbitrators may provide a list of key points or remaining questions for the parties to address in their closing statements, two of the attorneys said. WAITING GAME The tribunal will formally close the hearing, after which Hess, Exxon and CNOOC will not be allowed to submit further arguments unless authorized by the arbitrators. Two of the three arbitrators must agree on the final decision, one of the lawyers said. While the ICC’s rules of arbitration state that the tribunal must render a decision within six months, the four attorneys said the waiting game can vary greatly and the timeline may be extended in some cases. The tribunal will send its draft decision to the ICC, which will review and approve the award before it is delivered to the parties. Under the English Arbitration Act of 1996, parties may challenge an arbitral decision on limited grounds, such as serious irregularities, including violations of due process. While parties frequently attempt to set aside awards, such challenges are rarely successful, Kirtley said.
