American submarine, lost for over a century, discovered ‘remarkably intact’ off the coast of San Diego American submarine, lost for over a century, discovered ‘remarkably intact’ off the coast of San Diego When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. A reconstruction made from detailed digital photographs and sonar data shows the U.S. submarine F-1 lying on the seafloor a few miles from San Diego. | Credit: Image by Zoe Daheron, © Woods Hole Oceanographic Researchers have located the wrecks of two long-lost military vehicles on the seafloor a few miles from San Diego: an American submarine that sank during a training accident in 1917, and a U.S. Navy training aircraft that crashed nearby in 1950. The USS F-1 submarine sank in seconds after it was badly damaged in a collision with another U.S. Navy submarine. Nineteen of its crew drowned in the accident, and three were rescued by the other sub. The discovery, made by an expedition to the site earlier this year by researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) and the U.S. Navy, was the first time the sub wreck had been located and surveyed since the sinking. It now lies on the seafloor at a depth of more than 1,300 feet (400 meters). That’s too deep for human divers, so the wreck was surveyed by operators in the human-occupied underwater vehicle (HOV) Alvin and the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Sentry, which were based on the WHOI research ship Atlantis. “These two important oceanographic tools work extremely well together,” Bruce Strickrott, manager of the Alvin group at WHOI, told Live Science in an email. “The combined strength of the two capabilities has transformed deep sea oceanographic research and exploration, and is becoming a routine part of Alvin scientific missions.” Related: 30 incredible sunken wrecks from WWI and WWII Sunken submarine Bradley Krueger, an underwater archaeologist for the U.S. Navy’s Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), was on board Alvin during some of the dives and outlined the fatal 1917 sinking. “USS F-1 was conducting a 48-hour engineering run and performance test traveling from San Pedro and San Diego, CA, when the accident occurred,” Krueger told Live Science in an email. “[Navy submarines] USS F-2 and USS F-3 were alongside performing similar testing when all three vessels entered a fog bank. USS F-3 collided with USS F-1, and following the collision USS F-3 remained on scene to help rescue survivors from the water.” Image 1 of 3 a close-up of a submarine underwater The reconstruction shows the submarine’s “conning” tower and the damage on the submarine’s hull that caused it to sink. Image 2 of 3 a wrecked torpedo bomber The expedition also surveyed the wreck of a U.S. Navy Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber, which was being used for training in 1950 when it crashed nearby. Image 3 of 3 a close-up of a wrecked plane underwater The latest dives enabled the U.S. Navy to identify the aircraft and to confirm that no lives were lost in the accident. Stickrott said he had worked out the submarine wreck’s rough location from Navy records and that the AUV Sentry was sent out to survey the area. It located the wreck on the first afternoon of searching. The F-1 submarine now lies on its starboard (right) side with its bow (front) to the northwest, and subsequent explorations with the HOV Alvin showed the sub was “remarkably intact” after being underwater for more than 100 years, Stickrott said. The wreck is now a war grave for the 19 crew who died in the 1917 accident. WHOI and the Navy agreed not to make contact with the wreck, “to preserve its condition and be respectful of its legacy,” he said. Training bomber The expedition also surveyed the nearby wreck of a U.S. Navy Grumman TBF Avenger torpedo bomber, which crashed in the same area when it was being used as a training aircraft in 1950. Stickrott explained that the bomber wreck had been known to WHOI for several years and had sometimes been the target for engineering and training dives on Alvin. But the wreck’s location had been unknown to the U.S. Navy, so the site was surveyed to add information to the Navy’s records, he said. 3. 1 food this doctor always eats to get enough of it 1 food this doctor always eats to get enough of it Stephanie Venn-Watson studied longevity long before she realized it, she says. The veterinary epidemiologist was recruited by the U.S. Navy to take care of aging dolphins in 2001. Venn-Watson planned to research the dolphins to get a better understanding of infectious diseases, but “instead, very quickly pivoted to studying chronic diseases and diseases of aging,” which she’s done for more than 20 years, she told CNBC Make It in February. While dolphins in the wild typically live to around 20 years old, Navy dolphins were living much longer beyond the ages of 40 and 50, Venn-Watson says. Though some dolphins were developing conditions like chronic inflammation, high cholesterol and even changes in their brains similar to that of Alzheimer’s, others were completely healthy in old age. After analyzing thousands of samples collected over the span of about 50 years, Venn-Watson and her team were able to determine what the healthiest aging dolphins had in common. “We thought it was going to be omega-3′s, because all they eat are fish. And instead, it was C15:0, a saturated fatty acid I had never heard of,” she says. Venn-Watson and her team discovered a new essential fatty acid, C15:0, which like omega-3′s, can improve health outcomes in mammals. And additional research by experts outside of her team have supported this claim. Their discovery marks the “first essential fatty acid to be found in more than ninety years,” a finding which earned Venn-Watson a spot on CNBC’s 2025 Changemakers List earlier this year. With her husband, a Navy physician, Venn-Watson started Seraphina Therapeutics, and developed a C15:0 supplement for humans. She also published a book about her findings called “The Longevity Nutrient,” in March. To up her intake of the longevity nutrient in her own diet, Venn-Watson eats certain foods that are high in C15:0. Here’s the No. 1 food she eats to get more of the fatty acid. ‘I’ll have a cheese snack almost every day’ When Venn-Watson plans her meals, she always aims to maximize her intake of C15:0. “Key ways I do that are through grass-fed cheeses that come from grass-fed animals; those have some of the highest C15:0 levels,” she says. Often, it’s her daily snack that helps her increase how much of the longevity nutrient she’s getting: “I’ll have a cheese snack almost every day.” Pairing the grass-fed cheeses she eats with crackers helps her get yet another vital nutrient for her body: fiber. “We’ve also learned fiber has a lot of importance. So, classic cheese and crackers (high-fiber crackers, so not the ones that are chock full of processed carbs),” Venn-Watson says. “And pecorino, for example, has some of the highest nutritious content, including C15:0.” And though she discovered a new essential fatty acid, she still prioritizes the tried-and-true fatty acids like omega-3s. “My diet is high in fish. I probably have fish every day and dairy ****,” she says. In addition to the food she eats, Venn-Watson goes the extra mile to improve her health by taking certain vitamins: “I supplement with what the Navy invested 10 years in making, which is the pure C15:0 supplement.” Want to boost your confidence, income and career success? 4. Xbox Games Lineup Coming to PS5 in 2025 Is Still Missing the Most Vital Exclusive Xbox Games Lineup Coming to PS5 in 2025 Is Still Missing the Most Vital Exclusive Xbox has been very flexible with its exclusives, giving them away left and right to PlayStation with no plans of stopping anytime soon. With more of their flagship titles on their way to the platform, PlayStation fans have been gobbling them up after ridiculing them for years. Xbox’s lineup of games on PS5 has been stellar so far, with more heavy-hitters on the way. But a crucial exclusive that used to be one of the defining titles of the platform hasn’t arrived on PlayStation yet, and fans are wondering if it ever will. Halo’s PlayStation 5 port has still not been announced With an impressive lineup consisting of titles like Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Gears of War: Reloaded, Forza Horizon 5, and more making their official venture onto PlayStation, one might think that Xbox has already ordered Halo to join in on the fun. But it’s nowhere to be seen, and an official announcement is yet to be made. Xbox having a multiplatform strategy and porting all their first-party titles on PlayStation is old news, and it started with Hi-Fi Rush, Pentiment, Sea of Thieves, and Grounded making their way onto the competitor platform last year. Ever since then, Xbox hasn’t looked back, and in a very short amount of time, some of the platform’s best first-party exclusives have already gone to PlayStation, with Starfield rumored to be on the way too. So a Halo port still missing is a real bummer. Halo didn’t have the brightest time after Infinite was released, but after 343 Industries officially rebranded themselves as Halo Studios, it does seem like they’re working on something big. Additionally, they released footage of Halo running on Unreal Engine 5, which fueled rumors saying that a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved was in the works. What if the remake was being developed so that Halo could officially arrive on PlayStation, like how Gears is making its debut on PS5 with the remaster of the first game? Seems entirely possible with the way Xbox has been moving. However, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has the highest chance of making its way to PlayStation before any other Halo titles. Infinite probably has the lowest chance, firstly due to the mixed reception to the title, and secondly, because of how recent it is compared to the previous Halo games. Will Halo ever arrive on PlayStation? Not long now before we get Halo on PlayStation | Image Credit: Halo Studios The short answer is yes, Halo will most likely arrive on PlayStation in the future. It’s a matter of when rather than if. That “if” was obliterated the second Phil Spencer announced that there were “no red lines” for Xbox exclusive titles going to PlayStation. Their multiplatform strategy has been successful, as Xbox titles have been topping PlayStation charts ever since they were ported. Considering how big Halo is on Xbox, it would be a missed opportunity for them not to port it to PlayStation and milk the cash cow. June 8’s Xbox showcase should provide some information about upcoming Xbox titles like Gears of War: E-Day, Forza Horizon 6, and more. Who knows, maybe Halo can make a quick appearance at the event too. We’ll have to wait and see. After the disappointing Halo TV series, fans can use some new Halo content right now, be it new information about the rumored remake or the PlayStation port. But the possibility of the acclaimed series arriving on PS5 has never been higher. So, what do you think about Halo potentially coming to PlayStation? Do you think Xbox is ready to port its golden boy to its competing platform? Or do you think t? Let us know your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below. 6. Mortgage and refinance interest rates today, May 24, 2025: A surprise move downward Mortgage and refinance interest rates today, May 24, 2025: A surprise move downward Mortgage rates are slightly lower today. That’s welcome news after three days of rates stepping higher. According to Zillow, today’s 30-year fixed mortgage rate dipped by two basis points to 6.94%, and the 15-year fixed rate fell by three basis points to 6.09%. No, it’s not a huge move downward, but we’ll take any clue that the momentum for higher rates is easing. After the wild ride in the bond market in recent days, the fact that mortgage rates are going down is a little surprising. Read more: What determines mortgage rates? It’s complicated. Here are the current mortgage rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 6.94% 20-year fixed: 6.68% 15-year fixed: 6.09% 5/1 ARM: 7.35% 7/1 ARM: 7.33% 30-year VA: 6.41% 15-year VA: 5.69% 5/1 VA: 6.33% Remember, these are the national averages and rounded to the nearest hundredth. Learn more: 8 strategies for getting the lowest mortgage rates These are today’s mortgage refinance rates, according to the latest Zillow data: 30-year fixed: 7.06% 20-year fixed: 6.84% 15-year fixed: 6.15% 5/1 ARM: 7.85% 7/1 ARM: 7.39% 30-year VA: 6.50% 15-year VA: 5.91% 5/1 VA: 6.26% Again, the numbers provided are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth. Mortgage refinance rates are often higher than rates when you buy a house, although that’s not always the case. Use the mortgage calculator below to see how today’s interest rates would affect your monthly mortgage payments. For a deeper dive, you can use Yahoo’s free mortgage calculator to see how homeowners insurance and property taxes factor into in your monthly payment estimate. You even have the option to enter costs for private mortgage insurance (PMI) and homeowners’ association dues if those apply to you. These details result in a more accurate monthly payment estimate than if you simply calculated your mortgage principal and interest. There are two main advantages to a 30-year fixed mortgage: Your payments are lower, and your monthly payments are predictable. A 30-year fixed-rate mortgage has relatively low monthly payments because you’re spreading your repayment out over a longer ******* of time than with, say, a 15-year mortgage. Your payments are predictable because, unlike with an adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM), your rate isn’t going to change from year to year. Most years, the only things that might affect your monthly payment are any changes to your homeowners insurance or property taxes. The main disadvantage to 30-year fixed mortgage rates is mortgage interest — both in the short and long term. A 30-year fixed term comes with a higher rate than a shorter fixed term, and it’s higher than the intro rate to a 30-year ARM. The higher your rate, the higher your monthly payment. You’ll also pay much more in interest over the life of your loan due to both the higher rate and the longer term. The pros and cons of 15-year fixed mortgage rates are basically swapped from the 30-year rates. Yes, your monthly payments will still be predictable, but another advantage is that shorter terms come with lower interest rates. Not to mention, you’ll pay off your mortgage 15 years sooner. So you’ll save potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest over the course of your loan. However, because you’re paying off the same amount in half the time, your monthly payments will be higher than if you choose a 30-year term. Dig deeper: 15-year vs. 30-year mortgages Adjustable-rate mortgages lock in your rate for a predetermined amount of time, then change it periodically. For example, with a 5/1 ARM, your rate stays the same for the first five years and then goes up or down once per year for the remaining 25 years. The main advantage is that the introductory rate is usually lower than what you’ll get with a 30-year fixed rate, so your monthly payments will be lower. (Current average rates don’t necessarily reflect this, though — in some cases, fixed rates are actually lower. Talk to your lender before deciding between a fixed or adjustable rate.) With an ARM, you have no idea what mortgage rates will be like once the intro-rate ******* ends, so you risk your rate increasing later. This could ultimately end up costing more, and your monthly payments are unpredictable from year to year. But if you plan to move before the intro-rate ******* is over, you could reap the benefits of a low rate without risking a rate increase down the road. Learn more: Adjustable-rate vs. fixed-rate mortgage First of all, now is a relatively good time to buy a house compared to a couple of years ago. Home prices aren’t spiking like they were during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. So, if you want or need to buy a house soon, you should feel pretty good about the current housing market. However, mortgage rates are unpredictable right now due to the political and economic climate. Experts don’t think rates will plummet in 2025, so you might not want to base your decision on whether to buy strictly on interest rates. Recent news that home price gains are slowing, with predictions that house values may actually ease lower this year, can be part of your home buying decision. The best time to buy is typically whenever it makes sense for your stage of life. Trying to time the real estate market can be as futile as timing the stock market — buy when it’s the right time for you. Read more: Which is more important, your home price or mortgage rate? Have questions about buying, owning, or selling a house? Submit your question to Yahoo’s panel of Realtors using this Google form. According to Zillow, the national average 30-year mortgage rate is 6.94% right now. But keep in mind that averages can vary depending on where you live. For example, if you’re buying in a city with a high cost of living, rates could be higher. Overall, mortgage rates are expected to remain mostly steady in 2025. They probably won’t drop significantly anytime soon. Mortgage rates are down slightly today and lower than where they were in mid-January. In many ways, securing a low mortgage refinance rate is similar to when you bought your home. Try to improve your credit score and lower your debt-to-income ratio (DTI). Refinancing into a shorter term will also land you a lower rate, though your monthly mortgage payments will be higher. 7. PC Lovers Will Worship One Feature Nintendo Added in Switch 2 PC Lovers Will Worship One Feature Nintendo Added in Switch 2 Nintendo has always been the quirky cousin at gaming family gatherings—adored but never quite speaking the same language as PC enthusiasts. The Nintendo Switch 2 might finally change that dynamic in ways nobody expected. While everyone’s been obsessing over specs and pricing controversies, Nintendo quietly included something that’ll make even the most devoted PC Master Race members do a double-take. It’s not about raw power or flashy graphics. Sometimes the most revolutionary features hide in plain sight, waiting for the right moment to blow everyone’s minds. The feature that bridges two worlds Here’s what’s got a major part of the gaming population actually paying attention: the Nintendo Switch 2 supports full plug-and-play USB mouse functionality. Not some half-baked implementation—we’re talking genuine, seamless mouse support that works exactly like you’d expect. Producer Michi Ryu from Koei Tecmo demonstrated this during a showcase of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Awakening CE, casually plugging in a standard wired mouse and switching control methods instantly. He explained: In addition to the mouse operation with the Joy-**** 2, you can also connect a USB mouse, and it will work seamlessly. Once you connect the USB mouse, a message will appear in the top left indicating that the mouse is connected. When the USB mouse is connected, it takes priority over the Joy-**** 2. The original Switch technically supported keyboards and mice, but only a literal handful of games bothered implementing it. Nintendo‘s Game Builder Garage was basically the poster child for this forgotten feature. Switch 2 changes everything by making mouse support a core system feature rather than an afterthought. The Joy-**** 2 controllers include built-in mouse functionality, meaning developers can actually rely on this being available. As you can see, you can switch instantly. It’s very smooth. You can operate with both the controller and the mouse interchangeably. The switching speed is incredibly fast. This is more than just “convenience”—it’s about opening doors to entire game genres that previously felt awkward on consoles. Strategy games, simulation titles, and precision-demanding experiences suddenly become viable on Nintendo hardware. PC gamers are actually considering Switch 2 Console wars are getting spicy. | Image Credit: Nintendo The community response has been surprisingly positive, with even hardcore PC enthusiasts admitting the tech giant might be onto something special here: Comment byu/zaangie from discussion inNintendoSwitch2 That simple comment captures the broader sentiment perfectly. When PC gamers start using words like “huge” about Switch 2 features, something significant is happening. The portability factor, combined with proper mouse support, creates a compelling proposition that even gaming laptops struggle to match. Being able to play Civilization VII with full mouse controls on a plane or in bed? That’s genuinely appealing for many: Comment byu/zaangie from discussion inNintendoSwitch2 Mods have always been the trump card keeping strategy games tied to PC platforms. But when portability meets proper controls, that equation starts shifting. Comment byu/zaangie from discussion inNintendoSwitch2 Of course, mouse support in competitive games raises balance concerns that the devs will need to address carefully: Comment byu/zaangie from discussion inNintendoSwitch2 Whether Nintendo embraces this potential or keeps mouse support limited to specific genres remains the million-dollar question. But for now, PC gamers have one less reason to dismiss the Switch 2 entirely. What’s your take? Could this finally bridge the platform divide? Share your thoughts below, and let’s see if Nintendo can convert some PC Master Race loyalists. 8. Power outage Cannes Film Festival, possible arson Power outage Cannes Film Festival, possible arson People pose on the Croisette next to an installation of a Palme d’Or symbol during the 78th Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France, on May 24, 2025. Benoit Tessier | Reuters A major power outage struck southeastern France on Saturday morning, disrupting traffic and briefly halting events at the Cannes Film Festival as the prestigious event prepared to hand out its top prize. Power was restored around 3 p.m., as music began blasting again from beachfront speakers. The end of the blackout was greeted with loud cheers from locals. Earlier, about 160,000 households in the Alpes-Maritimes department lost electricity after a high-voltage line fell Saturday morning, electricity network operator RTE said on X. The outage came hours after a fire at an electrical substation near Cannes overnight had already weakened the grid. Police have opened an investigation into possible arson. “We are looking into the likelihood of a fire being started deliberately,” said a spokesperson for the French national gendarmerie. Cannes Film Festival organizers confirmed the outage affected the early activities of Saturday and said the Palais des Festivals — the Croisette’s main venue — had switched to an independent power supply. “All scheduled events and screenings, including the Closing Ceremony, will proceed as planned and under normal conditions,” the statement said. “At this stage, the cause of the outage has not yet been identified. Restoration efforts are underway.” Traffic lights in parts of Cannes and the surrounding city of Antibes stopped working after 10 a.m., leading to traffic jams and confusion in city centers. Most shops along the Croisette remained closed, and local food kiosks were only accepting cash. Train service in Cannes was also disrupted. Screenings at the Cineum, one of the festival’s satellite venues, were briefly suspended, the festival added. 10. Israel may change tack to allow aid groups in Gaza to stay in charge of non-food aid Israel may change tack to allow aid groups in Gaza to stay in charge of non-food aid TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — As pressure mounts to get more aid into Gaza, Israel appears to be changing tack and may let aid groups operating in the battered enclave remain in charge of non-food assistance while leaving food distribution to a newly established U.S.-backed group, according to a letter obtained by The Associated Press. The development indicates Israel may be walking back from its plans to tightly control all aid to Gaza and prevent aid agencies long established in the territory from delivering it in the same way they have done in the past. Israel accuses ****** of siphoning off aid but the United Nations and aid groups deny there is significant diversion. The U.N. has rejected Israel’s plan, saying it allows Israel to use food as a weapon, violates human humanitarian principles and won’t be effective. Israel had blocked food, fuel, medicine and all other supplies from entering Gaza for nearly three months, worsening a humanitarian crisis for 2.3 million Palestinians there. Experts have warned of a high risk of famine and international criticism and outrage over Israel’s offensive has escalated. Even the United States, a staunch ally, has voiced concerns over the hunger crisis. What does the letter say? The letter, dated May 22, is from Jake Wood, the head of the Israel-approved Gaza Humanitarian Foundation or GHF, and is addressed to COGAT, the Israeli military agency in charge of transferring aid to the territory. It says that Israel and GHF have agreed to allow non-food humanitarian aid — from medical supplies to hygiene items and shelter materials — to be handled and distributed under an existing system, which is led by the United Nations. U.N. agencies have so far provided the bulk of the aid for Gaza. The foundation would still maintain control over food distribution, but there would be a ******* of overlap with aid groups, the letter said. “GHF acknowledges that we do not possess the technical capacity or field infrastructure to manage such distributions independently, and we fully support the leadership of these established actors in this domain,” it said. The foundation confirmed the authenticity of the letter but did not comment on it further. COGAT declined to comment on the letter and referred the AP to the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which did not respond to a request for comment. U.N. officials also did not reply to requests for comments. The GHF, which is not yet up and working in Gaza, is run by security contractors, ex-military officers and humanitarian aid officials, and has the backing of Israel. The group says it plans to handle food aid, initially from a handful of hubs in southern and central Gaza with armed private contractors that would guard the distribution. Additional sites will be opened within a month, including in northern Gaza. The letter says aid agencies will continue providing food assistance in parallel to the GHF until at least eight sites are up and running. Aid groups have been pushing back on the GHF and Israel’s plans to take over the handling of food aid, saying it could forcibly displace large numbers of Palestinians by pushing them toward the distribution hubs and that the foundation doesn’t have the capacity to meet the needs of the Palestinians in Gaza. It’s also unclear who is funding the GHF, which claims to have more than $100 million in commitments from a foreign government donor but has not named the donor. What do others say? The letter says that GHF’s Wood was on a call with the CEOs of six aid groups discussing the new plans, including Save the Children, International Medical Corps, Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps, Care and Project HOPE. Rabih Torbay, head of Project HOPE, confirmed the call and said his organization was encouraged to hear that the delivery of medicines and other non-food items would continue under the current system. Still, Torbay appealed for food aid to be allowed into Gaza without “obstruction or politicization.” Mairav Zonszein, a senior analyst on Israel for the International Crisis Group, says the letter is a clear sign that both Israel and the GHF recognize the humanitarian catastrophe people face in Gaza and the need for immediate aid. “The GHF and Israel are clearly scrambling to get something that works — or at least the appearance of functioning aid — and that this mechanism is not ready or equipped or fitting for the needs of the population in Gaza,” Zonszein said. Ahmed Bayram, Middle East spokesperson for the Norwegian Refugee Council, said that Israel is part of the conflict and should not be in control of the aid distribution. “Israel interfering in parts or all of that process would be damaging to the independence and neutrality of humanitarian aid,” Bayram said. The GHF came under more scrutiny this week, with TRIAL International — a Geneva-based advocacy group focusing on international justice — saying Friday that it was taking legal action to urge Swiss authorities to monitor the group, which is registered in Switzerland. The foundation’s spokesperson has insisted that it abides by humanitarian principles and operates free from Israeli control. The spokesperson, speaking anonymously under the foundation’s policy, told AP earlier this week that it is not a military operation and that its armed security guards are necessary for it to work in Gaza. The war in Gaza began on Oct. 7, 2023, when ******-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 others. Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count. Sure, the physics and controls are more easygoing than any WRC game out there, but the reality is that its campaign is really long and repetitive, demanding way too much dedication from people who were just expecting to grab a little racing game to play a few arcadey rounds. It’s more of an entry-level racing simulator. If that’s fine by you, there’s a lot to like in here. A bit cheap in terms of presentation, and somewhat lacking in polish, but I had my fair share of fun with it. 13. Clues and answer for Saturday, May 24 Clues and answer for Saturday, May 24 Hey, there! Welcome to the weekend. We hope it’s a terrific one for you, and perhaps that includes keeping your Wordle streak in one piece. To help make sure that happens, here’s our daily Wordle guide with some hints and the answer for Saturday’s puzzle (#1,435). It may be that you’re a Wordle newcomer and you’re not completely sure how to play the game. We’re here to help with that too. What is Wordle? Wordle is a deceptively simple daily word game that first emerged in 2021. The gist is that there is one five-letter word to deduce every day by process of elimination. The daily word is the same for everyone. Wordle blew up in popularity in late 2021 after creator Josh Wardle made it easy for players to share an emoji-based grid with their friends and followers that detailed how they fared each day. The game’s success spurred dozens of clones across a swathe of categories and formats. The New York Times purchased Wordle in early 2022 for an undisclosed sum. The publication said that players collectively played Wordle 5.3 billion times in 2024. So, it’s little surprise that Wordle is one of the best online games and puzzles you can play daily. How to play Wordle To start playing Wordle, you simply need to enter one five-letter word. The game will tell you how close you are to that day’s secret word by highlighting letters that are in the correct position in green. Letters that appear in the word but aren’t in the right spot will be highlighted in yellow. If you guess any letters that are not in the secret word, the game will gray those out on the virtual keyboard. You’ll only have six guesses to find each day’s word, though you still can use grayed-out letters to help narrow things down. It’s also worth remembering that letters can appear in the secret word more than once. Wordle is free to play on the NYT’s website and apps, as well as on Meta Quest headsets. The game refreshes at midnight local time. If you log into a New York Times account, you can track your stats, including the all-important win streak. How to play Wordle more than once a day If you have a NYT subscription that includes full access to the publication’s games, you don’t have to stop after a single round of Wordle. You’ll have access to an archive of more than 1,400 previous Wordle games. So if you’re a relative newcomer, you’ll be able to go back and catch up on previous editions. In addition, paid NYT Games members have access to a tool called the Wordle Bot. This can tell you how well you performed at each day’s game. 16. Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers coach Justin Longmuir defends Alex Pearce after Darcy Byrne-Jones concussion Walyalup (Fremantle) Dockers coach Justin Longmuir defends Alex Pearce after Darcy Byrne-Jones concussion Walyalup (Fremantle) coach Justin Longmuir has launched a stern defence of captain Alex Pearce following his collision with Darcy Byrne-Jones saying the star defender will have no case to answer when the incident is assessed by the AFL. The Dockers beat Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) 15.10 (100) to 7.9 (51) and dominated the second half, but all eyes will be on the Pearce contest to see if he is free to play against Gold Coast next week. Byrne-Jones was concussed during the collision in the second quarter which occurred in a marking contest. The Match Review Officer will closely analyse the incident before making a call on Sunday but Longmuir is adamant Pearce should be available to face the Suns. “I’m not concerned at all,’ Longmuir declared. “I loved the courage of Byrne-Jones. You never like to see anyone get injured, but from what I saw, Alex was making a play on the ball. It was extreme courage to go back with the flight like that and touch the ball before Alex gets there but from what I see, Alex is making a play on the ball. “I don’t think he makes contact with the head. What’s Alex supposed to do in that situation? Pull out of that contest and let him mark it going back with the flight? He’d get crucified if Alex pulled out of that contest. That’s what would happen. “I don’t have any issues with it. There’s things that happen in our game and there’s unfortunate contact that happens in our game. It happens in marking contests a lot. I see it as one of those situations. Camera IconDarcy Byrne-Jones was concussed. Credit: Janelle St Pierre/AFL Photos/AFL Photos via Getty Images “I didn’t think it was a free kick. I’ve got no issues with it being paid as a free kick. But I didn’t think really think it was a free kick. I thought it was two guys contesting the ball. I didn’t see any head high contact.” The win lifted the Dockers to 6-5 and Luke Jackson was again brilliant while leading the ruck in Sean Darcy’s absence. Jackson had 21 disposals, eight clearances, 38 hit outs and kicked one goal and debate will now rage as to what Longmuir should do if Darcy is available for selection against Gold Coast. Longmuir said he’s viewing the situation vastly differently to everyone else. “I see it as a great problem to have,” he said. “To have two players who are really good at their position. Everyone else is seeing it as a bad problem. I see it as a good problem. Jacko has got flexibility to play other positions and there’s other ways we can get him around the footy. 20. ‘Can be silently compromised over time’ ‘Can be silently compromised over time’ Twenty-eight major U.S. cities are sinking due to groundwater extraction — a phenomenon that could affect 34 million people. What’s happening? A team of researchers from Virginia Tech used satellite radar to map subsidence — the gradual or sudden sinking of land — for 28 of the most populous cities in the United States. The research, published in the journal Nature Cities, revealed that all 28 cities studied are, in fact, sinking. The team estimated that at least 20% of the urban area is sinking in each city, and it’s over 65% in 25 cities. Cities like Chicago, Denver, Seattle, and New York are gradually sinking at about two millimeters per year, while parts of Houston are sinking up to 10 millimeters annually. The research team studied how variations in subsidence rates affect infrastructure risks. Inconsistent land motion can gradually weaken and damage buildings, foundations, and other structures. “The latent nature of this risk means that infrastructure can be silently compromised over time, with damage only becoming evident when it is severe or potentially catastrophic,” said Manoochehr Shirzaei, author of the study and associate professor at Virginia Tech’s Earth Observation and Innovation Lab. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Why is groundwater depletion concerning? In their study, the researchers discovered that groundwater extraction is the main cause of land subsidence. According to the EPA, 50% of people in the U.S. rely on groundwater for drinking, farming, livestock, industrial, and household needs. But when groundwater is pumped at a faster rate than it can replenish over the long term, it can lead to land collapse and compaction, reduced supply, and lower water quality. While extreme weather events have always existed, scientists note that human-induced climate crises supercharge these events. This exacerbates issues like droughts, which can accelerate groundwater depletion and make communities more vulnerable to its effects. What’s being done about land subsidence? Virginia Tech’s study stresses the significance of monitoring land movement when crafting policies for urban planning. The researchers recommended measures to mitigate infrastructure risks, including groundwater management to prevent excessive pumping, enhanced monitoring of critical infrastructure, and retrofitting existing infrastructure for increased resilience. People can help by showing support for responsible water management policies and staying informed about critical climate issues. Making homes more resilient can also help to better prepare for extreme weather events. For example, pairing solar panels with a battery system can help prepare your home for long grid outages while reducing energy costs to nearly $0. EnergySage provides a free service that allows you to easily compare quotes from reputable local installers and potentially save up to $10,000 on your solar installation. The tech boss had a cordial conversation with Governor Greg Abbott last week, but made it clear that Apple was interested in stopping the bill, sources told The Wall Street Journal. The proposal – House Bill 186, which was introduced by Jared Patterson in February – aims to crack down on the use of social media by minors, including prohibiting anyone under 18 from using any social media platform. Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly called the governor of Texas personally to request he veto proposed changes to the state’s online child safety laws (AP) According to the Journal, Cook asked for changes to the legislation or, failing that, for it to be dismissed. Abbott has not yet stated whether he will sign the bill or not. “Safety and online privacy for Texas children remain a priority for Governor Abbott,” the governor’s Press Secretary Andrew Mahaleris said in a statement. “The Governor will thoughtfully review this legislation, as he does with any legislation sent to his desk.” The Independent has reached out to Apple for comment. In a statement shared with the Journal and other outlets, a spokesperson said the company was “deeply concerned” about the effect of the legislation on the privacy of all its users. Abbott has not yet stated whether he will sign the bill or not, though a spokesperson for the governor said that safety and online privacy for Texas children ‘remains a priority’ (AP) “If enacted, app marketplaces will be required to collect and keep sensitive personal identifying information for every Texan who wants to download an app, even if it’s an app that simply provides weather updates or sports scores,” the statement said. “We believe there are better proposals that help keep kids safe without requiring millions of people to turn over their personal information.” According to the Journal, Apple has ramped up its efforts to stymie the legislation in recent weeks, including targeting areas in Austin with ads claiming the legislation is “backed by porn websites.” Source link #Apple #CEO #Tim #Cook #called #Greg #Abbott #press #stop #states #proposed #online #child #safety #laws #report #reveals Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  25. How Swiss sneaker company is challenging Nike and Adidas How Swiss sneaker company is challenging Nike and Adidas Swiss brand On is quickly emerging as a global challenger in the sportswear market. The company, which sells premium-priced athletic shoes and apparel, reported net sales for the three-month ******* ended March 31 rose over 40% to 726.6 million Swiss francs (US$869 million) compared with the year prior. Analysts say the brand has been able to capture market share from legacy competitors like Nike and Adidas through innovative products and timing. “The main thing they really understood was they went for the aesthetic of the shoe,” said Aneesha Sherman, managing director at Bernstein. “It’s really like no other silhouette that the consumer had seen. That is what drove the initial success.” Around the time of On’s 2021 initial public offering, Nike saw declining sales during a pullback from wholesale retailers and stalling innovation. Adidas also experienced rocky quarters as it ended its controversial partnership with Kanye West. Nike and Adidas still own a combined 58% of global market share, according to FactSet, while On makes up a little less than 3%. But its earnings growth rate has outpaced both companies in recent quarters. “It was luck as well as design that got them that huge scale in the years 2021, onwards, with that mass consumer,” Sherman said. “For the first time, retailers were actually going out there and looking for emerging, high-growth brands to take that [shelf] space and On was right there for them.” Now, Nike is mounting a turnaround plan under its new CEO, Elliott Hill, which analysts say could pose a potential headwind to On. The company also faces tariffs uncertainty along with the rest of the sportswear industry. Around 90% of On’s sneakers are manufactured in Vietnam, according the company, which President Donald Trump has said could face a 46% import duty. Watch the video above to learn more about how On is taking on sportswear competitors and how it plans to navigate tariffs.
