Trump’s involvement in Ukraine peace talks ‘giving Putin more power’, Yulia Navalnaya says
Yulia Navalnaya has said Donald Trump’s negotiations with Russia on Ukraine are making Vladimir Putin “feel stronger”.
The Russian activist and widow of the late Russian dissident Alexei Navalny said Trump speaking to the Russian president “like they’re equal” is making him more powerful.
She made the remarks while speaking at a sold-out event with Alastair Campbell at the Hay Festival in Wales on Friday, which The Independent is once again partnering with.
“Putin is [a] crime person; he is a kind of ****** boss. He kills people. He started the war,” Ms Navalnaya said when asked how she felt about Trump’s involvement in Ukraine peace talks.
(Billie Charity and Hay Festival)
“Trump – you can like him or not – but he’s an elected president of a big country. He participated in real elections, he won these elections.
“But all of these negotiations happening like they’re equal gives Putin – who is a tyrant – more power.
“I’m sure it was very difficult for Putin and that he suffered a lot during these last few years because nobody would have been meeting with him.
“He was just sitting in Moscow, scared to go anywhere because he was at war and he could be arrested somewhere.
She made the remarks while speaking at a sold-out event with Alastair Campbell at Wales’ Hay Festival on Friday, which The Independent is once again partnering with (Billie Charity and Hay Festival)
“But now all of these negotiations have given him again more power. I’m absolutely sure Putin now feels more strength and, like, he can do whatever he wants because he feels people want to speak with him, people want to negotiate with him.”

She added: “Trump promised to stop this war and he’s trying to show that he’s capable of doing it. But it’s very difficult in the end to do it with a person who promises something that you can’t trust.”
Ms Navalnya’s late husband was arrested in 2021 after returning to Russia and had been serving sentences totalling more than 30 years on a number of charges, which were widely rejected by the international community.
His death was announced by Russian authorities on 16 February 2024 while serving time in a “special regime” penal colony in central Russia. The 47-year-old had reportedly fallen unwell after a walk, before losing consciousness.
Ms Navalnaya has previously claimed that Putin is responsible for Mr Navalny’s death and today revealed how she found out about her husband’s death through a news story.
“I was at Munich Security Conference, just at regular meetings in my hotel room, just preparing. Then I just opened [my phone] and it was written, ‘Alexei Navalny dead in prison,’” adding she had seen false headlines about her husband being dead in media at least once before.

Since her husband’s death, Navalnaya has vowed to continue his fight. Last July, Russia issued an arrest warrant for Ms Navalnaya herself, over accusations she has participated in an “extremist” group.
She described her late husband as “courageous, funny and the best man in the world” after walking in to a standing ovation at the event to discuss his book Patriot.
When asked if she hoped Russia would be a democracy one day at the end of the talk, she replied simply: “Of course.”
Spread over 11 days, the 38th spring edition of the annual cultural event is set in Hay-on-Wye, the idyllic and picturesque “Town of Books”. The star-studded lineup includes Mary Trump, Michael Sheen, Jameela Jamil, and more.
The Independent has partnered with the Festival once again to host a series of morning panels titled The News Review, where our journalists will explore current affairs with leading figures from politics, science, the arts and comedy every morning.

‘He’d get crucified’ – Dockers coach defends captain
‘He’d get crucified’ – Dockers coach defends captain
Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir is adamant Alex Pearce should have nothing to worry about, declaring the skipper’s collision that concussed Port Adelaide’s Darcy Byrne-Jones didn’t even warrant a free kick.
Byrne-Jones was running with the flight of the ball when Pearce cannoned into him from the opposite direction in Fremantle’s 49-point win on Saturday night.
Although Pearce didn’t turn his body in a bumping motion, he took his eyes off the ball at the last moment and was airborne when contact was made.
Byrne-Jones was helped off the ground after the second-quarter incident and was subbed out of the game with a concussion.
Pearce looks set to face a ban in the vicinity of three weeks, but Longmuir reckons the star skipper should be cleared of any wrongdoing.
“I’m not concerned at all,” Longmuir said.
“I love the courage of Byrne-Jones. You never like to see anyone get injured.
“But from what I saw, Alex is making a play on the ball.
“Extreme courage (from Byrne-Jones) to go back with the flight like that and touch the ball before Alex gets there.
“But from what I see, Alex is making a play on the ball. I don’t think he makes contact with the head.
“What’s Alex supposed to do in that situation? Pull out of that contest and let him mark it, going back with the flight? He’d get crucified.
“If Alex pulled out of that contest, that’s what would happen. So I don’t have any issues with it.”
Longmuir described the collision as “unfortunate contact that happens in our game”.
“It happens in marking contests a lot, and I see it as one of those situations,” he said.
“I didn’t think it was a free kick. I’ve got no issues with it being paid a free kick, but I didn’t really think it was a free kick.
“I just thought it was two guys contesting the ball.”
Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley acknowledged there wasn’t any malice from Pearce’s side, but felt the incident will probably be punished.
“Once upon a time they were footy incidents that weren’t such a big issue, but they are now, and rightly so because of the concussion,” Hinkley said.
“I’m sure both players went at the ball pretty reasonable, but in the end, there was a brace, seemed like a brace that causes some problems.
“And whether that’s Darcy hitting his head on the ground or not, it causes a concussion.
“I’m sure Pearce wouldn’t have meant that, but it’ll play out with the AFL like it always does.”
Hinkley had some empathy for Pearce, given the split-second nature of the incident.
“It’s really hard for today’s modern players to play the game,” Hinkley said.
“But the reality is, we know what the rules are and what they’re adjudicated like now, so I think everyone knows when that happens there’s usually some type of consequence.
“I’ve seen that in my team, I can reflect on two or three of my players over most recent times who have had big suspensions because of those things, and they’re split-second decisions that slightly go wrong.
“Concussion seems to be … the overriding factor in it all.”

‘It is advisable to start action as soon as possible’
‘It is advisable to start action as soon as possible’
Coastal ports on the Caspian Sea could be left high and dry — and crucial habitats could be strongly affected — if the sea’s level continues to drop with increasing global temperatures, a recent study reported. The research warned of risks to humans as well as protected species.
What’s happening?
Researchers led by University of Leeds faculty explored the possible impacts of projected declines in the sea’s level by as much as 21 meters (about 70 feet) by the end of the century. They published their findings in April in the journal Communications Earth & Environment.
The water level of the Caspian Sea — the world’s largest landlocked water body — is declining as global temperatures increase, because more water is evaporating than flowing in, a university report about the study explained.
The researchers concluded that, even if global temperature changes are limited to 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels, the Caspian Sea will likely drop 16 to 32 feet.
This 2-degree mark is considered by many scientists to be a key threshold for efforts to limit the most severe effects on Earth’s climate. Recent assessments consider it likely that the world will exceed this temperature increase.
The new findings estimate that more than 27 million acres of the Caspian Sea — an area larger than Iceland — would dry up under even this more optimistic climate scenario.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? Why are lower Caspian Sea levels concerning?
According to the new study, the sea level change under this scenario will “critically disrupt key ecosystems” as well as “reduce existing marine protected area coverage by up to 94%, and render billions of dollars of civil and industrial infrastructure obsolete.”
Per the report, the Caspian coast is home to more than 15 million people — in Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Turkmenistan. They rely on it for fishing, shipping, and trade.
The research indicated that, depending on the scenario, Northern Caspian communities and port equipment could end up anywhere from six to 60 miles from the shoreline of a dried-up sea.
Dropping water levels will also reduce the breeding habitat of endangered Caspian seals and will limit access to rivers where several species of sturgeon spawn, per the research. A drying sea will also cause the loss of lagoons and other shallow-water habitats crucial to other fish and migratory birds.
What can be done about lower Caspian Sea levels?
The researchers noted that their findings come at a key juncture.
“Some Caspian Sea level decline appears unavoidable,” Simon Goodman, who supervised the research, said in the University of Leeds report. “It should be possible to find ways to protect biodiversity while safeguarding human interests and well-being … [but] it is advisable to start action as soon as possible to give the best chance of success.”
Included on the researchers’ list of recommendations are investments in biodiversity monitoring, conservation, and sustainable development. They advocated for helping coastal communities diversify their economies. They also argued for creating protected areas with flexible borders, to accommodate shifting habitats.
The recommendations also included cuts to heat-trapping pollution on a global scale — to limit the warming that carries with it risks to the Caspian and the world. These cuts require work for companies and countries — and individuals can also contribute, through efforts ranging from reconsidering what we eat to limiting the carbon pollution of our homes.

A hundred not out for master tennis centurion Djokovic
A hundred not out for master tennis centurion Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has finally clinched his 100th career singles title by rallying to beat Hubert Hurkacz 5-7 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-2) in more than three hours to become the Geneva Open champion.
Djokovic had lost his two previous finals since his 99th title win nine months ago at the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros.
But now he will head back to the same venue for the French Open in fantastic spirits after winning a tough final on Saturday two days after his 38th birthday.
“I’m just grateful to clinch the 100 here,” Djokovic said in an on-court interview, with his family watching on in the Swiss city where some of his relatives reside.
“I had to work for it, that is for sure.”
Djokovic joins fellow greats Jimmy Connors, who has a record 109 titles, and Roger Federer, on 103, as the only men with a century of tournament wins in the Open era.
The three-time French Open champion heads back to Roland Garros looking to add to his 24 grand slam singles titles.
He is set for a first-round match on Monday against American Mackenzie McDonald.
The Serb clinched with an ace down the middle to complete a surge to victory after breaking Hurkacz’s serve for the first time while trailing 4-3 in the deciding set.
Djokovic took that break-point chance with a forehand cross-court winner advancing to the net on Hurkacz’s sliced half-volley.
“Hubert was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was,” Djokovic said. “I don’t know how I broke his serve.”
Djokovic is now the first man in the Open era to win a title in 20 different seasons, his 100th singles title coming nearly 19 years after the first in July 2006.
That also was on clay, at Amersfoort in the Netherlands, against Nicolas Massu — the Chilean who now coaches Hurkacz.
“It’s really inspiring how you present yourself on the court, off the court. It’s just really incredible what you have achieved,” Hurkacz said to the winner in the on-court trophy presentations.
Since the Paris Olympics, he had lost finals at the Shanghai Masters to Jannik Sinner last year, and the Miami Masters to Jakub Mensik in March.
Djokovic got much more than the match practice he came to Geneva for. He had fallen to quick exits in April from the previous tournaments he entered in the European clay-court season, at Monte Carlo and Madrid.
He also got to spend time with his extended family in the Swiss lakeside city where he has an aunt, uncle and cousins. His wife and children joined him in Geneva to celebrate his birthday after cutting a day of school, Djokovic quipped.

Japan’s private Resilience lunar lander has given us a nice shot of the moon just two weeks before its historic touchdown attempt.
On Thursday morning (May 22), the Tokyo-based company ispace, which built and operates Resilience, shared a photo on X that the probe took of the moon‘s south polar region.
“Resilience snapped this photo of the moon’s south pole from lunar orbit, capturing the rough terrain of the many geological features of the lunar surface (which some say look like cheese from afar!). This image presents an optical illusion to some — although the image is filled with concave craters, from this orientation they may look like they are convex to the eye. What do you see: craters or bumps?” ispace wrote in the X post.
Resilience launched on Jan. 15 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that also carried another private moon lander: Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost.
Blue Ghost touched down on March 2, becoming just the second-ever commercial vehicle to soft-land successfully on the moon. (The first was Intuitive Machines’ Odysseus spacecraft that touched down on the lunar surface in February of 2024.) Resilience — ispace’s second-ever moon lander — took a longer, looping, energy-efficient route to Earth’s nearest neighbor, finally arriving in lunar orbit on May 6.
The Japanese lander is scheduled to touch down on June 5 in Mare Frigoris (“Sea of Cold”), a volcanic plain in the moon’s northern hemisphere. Success would be huge for ispace and for Japan; the nation has just one moon landing under its belt, that of the SLIM (“Smart Lander for Investigating Moon’) spacecraft that landed in January 2024. (SLIM was operated by JAXA, Japan’s national space agency.)
ispace came close to notching that milestone: Its first moon lander reached orbit successfully in March of 2023, but failed during its touchdown try a month later after getting confused by the rim of a crater.

Resilience is carrying five science and technology payloads to the moon, including a miniature rover named Tenacious.
The little wheeled robot, which was built by ispace’s European subsidiary, will attempt to collect moon dirt under a contract that signed with NASA in 2020. Tenacious is also carrying some art on its front bumper — a piece called “Moonhouse” by Sweden’s Mikael Genberg.

Russia launches massive missile, drone attacks on Kyiv
Russia launches massive missile, drone attacks on Kyiv
May 24 (UPI) — Russia, using missiles and drones, launched one of the biggest assaults on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, since the beginning of the war more than three years ago and hours after a prisoner exchange began.
Russia was retaliating after several days of Ukrainian drone attacks inside its territory, including in Moscow.
The first explosions in Kyiv were reported at 10 p.m. Friday, according to the Kviv Independent. Another wave was heard at around 1 a.m. and then, hours later, more missile debris was reported in the Obolonskyi district
CNN reported that 13 people died in the drone and missile attacks — at least four in the eastern Donetsk region, five in the southern Kherson and Odesa regions, and four in the northern Kharkiv region in the past 24 hours.
At least 15 people needed medical attention in Kyiv, including two children, the network reported.
Russia launched 14 ballistic missiles and 250 drones, with Ukrainian forces shooting down six missiles and stopping 245 drones before they reached Kyiv. Projectiles also hit the Dnipro, Odesa, Kharkiv, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reacted angrily after the attack and posted video with his message on X.
“It was a difficult night for all of Ukraine — 250 strike drones, the absolute majority of them Iranian ‘Shaheds,’ and 14 ballistic missiles,” Zelenskyy wrote. “The Odesa, Vinnytsia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kyiv, Dnipro regions suffered damages. All strikes targeted civilians. There are fatalities. My condolences to the families and loved ones.”
Zelensky called for more sanctions on Russia to achieve a cease-fire, including one lasting 30 days.
“With each such attack, the world becomes more certain that the cause of prolonging the war lies in Moscow,” Zelensky wrote.
“Ukraine has proposed a ceasefire many times — both a full one and one in the skies. It all has been ignored. It is clear that far stronger pressure must be imposed on Russia to get results and launch real diplomacy.
“We are awaiting sanctions steps from the United States, Europe, and all our partners. Only additional sanctions targeting key sectors of the Russian economy will force Moscow to cease fire.”
Amid explosions and loud sirens throughout Kyiv, people took shelter in the city’s subway stations as the air raid alert in lasted more than seven hours
A five-story building in the Solomianskyi district caught fire, and seven people needed medical attention, said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration.
“It’s terrorism,” said Mykyta Kruchan, a 22-year-old business development manager whose parents live in an apartment building in the Obolonskyi district hit by a Russian Shahed-type drone. Their apartment was not damaged, he told the Independent.
“What Ukraine does we shoot their military buildings, military stuff, centers. … But here, it’s not an adequate reply to me. All they do is on purpose.”
Kruchan, who described himself as once a supporter of President Donald Trump, said the president wants to “team up with terrorists rather than stop them.”
Olha Chyrukha, a 64-year-old resident of Kyiv, standing outside a damaged apartment building, said: “I wish they’d agree to a cease-fire. To bomb people like this …”
Ukrainian parliament member Kira Rudik told CNN hiding “under the stairs” overnight in Kyiv.
“It was terrifying, it felt honestly like armageddon, the explosions were everywhere,” she said.
Russia’s defense ministry claimed 94 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles over Russian territory were destroyed, mostly over the Belgorod and Bryansk regions. Also, some UAVs were shot down over the Kursk, Lipetsk, Voronezh and Tula regions.
Prisoner swap, cease-fire talks
Russia and Ukraine began a one-for-one 1,000 prisoner exchange of soldiers and civilians in the first phase of a deal agreed to in Istanbul, Turkey, this week.
In the first swap on Friday, 390 Ukrainians were back home, and on Saturday the Russian defense ministry said 307 prisoners from each country were exchanged.
The two sides, with help from the United States, have been working toward a permanent cease-fire.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said “one week has passed since the Istanbul meeting, and Russia has yet to send its ‘peace memorandum.’ Instead, Russia sends deadly drones and missiles at civilians.”
Ukraine and its allies want an immediate and unconditional cease-fire.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said his nation would give Ukraine a draft text stating its conditions for a truce after the prisoner swap is completed.
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin didn’t show up for a meeting with Zelensky in Turkey. Instead, lower-level officials negotiated.

Russia and Ukraine swap hundreds more prisoners hours after a massive attack on Kyiv – National
Russia and Ukraine swap hundreds more prisoners hours after a massive attack on Kyiv – National
Russia and Ukraine exchanged hundreds more prisoners Saturday as part of a major swap that amounted to a rare moment of cooperation in otherwise failed efforts to reach a ceasefire. The exchange came hours after Kyiv came under a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack that left at least 15 people injured.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s defense ministry said each side brought home 307 more soldiers on Saturday, a day after each released a total of 390 combatants and civilians. Further releases expected over the weekend are set to make the swap the largest in more than three years of war.
“We expect more to come tomorrow,” Zelenskyy said on his official Telegram channel. Russia’s defense ministry also said it expected the exchange to be continued, though it did not give details.
Hours earlier, explosions and anti-aircraft fire were heard throughout Kyiv as many sought shelter in subway stations as Russian drones and missiles targeted the Ukrainian capital overnight.

In talks held in Istanbul earlier this month — the first time the two sides met face to face for peace talks since Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion — Kyiv and Moscow agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners of war and civilian detainees each.
‘A difficult night’
Officials said Russia attacked Ukraine with 14 ballistic missiles and 250 Shahed drones overnight while Ukrainian forces shot down six missiles and neutralized 245 drones — 128 drones were shot down and 117 were thwarted using electronic warfare.
The Kyiv City Military Administration said it was one of the biggest combined missile and drone attacks on the capital.

“A difficult night for all of us,” the administration said in a statement.
Posting on X, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called it “clear evidence that increased sanctions pressure on Moscow is necessary to accelerate the peace process.”
Posting on X, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy spoke of “another night of terror for Ukrainian civilians.”
“These are not the actions of a country seeking peace,” Lammy said of the Russian strike.

Air raid alert in Kyiv
The debris of intercepted missiles and drones fell in at least six Kyiv city districts. According to the acting head of the city’s military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, six people required medical care after the attack and two fires were sparked in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district.
The Obolon district, where a residential building was heavily damaged in the attack, was the hardest hit with at least five wounded in the area, the administration said.
Yurii Bondarchuk, a local resident, said the air raid siren “started as usual, then the drones started to fly around as they constantly do.” Moments later, he heard a ***** and saw shattered glass fly through the air.
“The balcony is totally wiped out, as well as the windows and the doors,” he said as he stood in the dark, smoking a ********** to calm his nerves while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.
The air raid alert in Kyiv lasted more than seven hours, warning of incoming missiles and drones.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitalii Klitschko, warned residents ahead of the attack that more than 20 Russian strike drones were heading toward the city. As the attack continued, he said drone debris fell on a shopping mall and a residential building in Obolon. Emergency services were headed to the site, Klitschko said.

Separately, 13 civilians were killed on Friday and overnight into Saturday in Russian attacks in Ukraine’s south, east and north, regional authorities said.
Three people died after a Russian ballistic missile targeted port infrastructure in Odesa on the ****** Sea, local Gov. Oleh Kiper reported. Russia later said the strike Friday targeted a cargo ship carrying military equipment.
Russia’s defense ministry on Saturday claimed its forces overnight struck various military targets across Ukraine, including missile and drone-producing plants, a reconnaissance center and a launching site for anti-aircraft missiles.
A complex deal
The prisoner swap on Friday was the first phase of a complicated deal involving the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side.

It took place at the border with Belarus, in northern Ukraine, according to a Ukrainian official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.
The released Russians were taken to Belarus for medical treatment, the Russian Defense Ministry said.
POWs arrived at the medical facility in the Chernihiv region for a second day on Saturday. But for many their arrival was bittersweet.
Those who were not reunited with their loved ones took solace in the released POWs providing some information about when their relatives were last seen.

Anna Marchenko, the daughter of a missing Ukrainian serviceman, was elated when a released POW said they had seen her father.
“This is such a big news. It’s like a fresh breath of air,” she said. “I didn’t see him, but at least it’s some news. At least it’s news that gives us the opportunity to continue to breathe and live in peace.”
However, the exchange — the latest of dozens of swaps since the war began and the biggest involving Ukrainian civilians so far — did not herald a halt in the fighting.
Battles continued along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed, and neither country has relented in its deep strikes.
After the May 16 Istanbul meeting, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan called the prisoner swap a “confidence-building measure” and said the parties had agreed in principle to meet again.
But Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday that there has been no agreement yet on the venue for the next round of talks as diplomatic maneuvering continued.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Moscow would give Ukraine a draft document outlining its conditions for a “sustainable, long-term, comprehensive” peace agreement, once the ongoing prisoner exchange had finished.
Far apart on key conditions
Story continues below advertisement
European leaders have accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of dragging his feet in peace efforts while he tries to press his larger army’s battlefield initiative and capture more Ukrainian land.
The Istanbul meeting revealed that both sides remained far apart on key conditions for ending the fighting. One such condition for Ukraine, backed by its Western allies, is a temporary ceasefire as a first step toward a peaceful settlement.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said that overnight and early on Saturday its forces shot down over 100 Ukrainian drones over six provinces in western and southern Russia.
The drone strikes injured three people in the Tula region south of Moscow, local Gov. Dmitriy Milyaev said, and sparked a fire at an industrial site there.
Andriy Kovalenko, of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, said Saturday the drones hit a plant in Tula that makes chemicals used in explosives and rocket fuel.

Yards become rubbish dumps as flood clean-up continues
The front yard of the home Damian Newell and his family were forced to leave amid rising floodwaters has turned into a rubbish dump as their town continues to clean up.
Locals and emergency services are assessing more of the damage on Sunday following deadly floods around the NSW mid-north coast.
Months worth of rain was dumped in a matter of days in some areas, with five people killed during the floods that followed.
Mr Newell and his family evacuated their Taree home on Tuesday afternoon before the Manning River reached its highest level on record.
“Our front yard at the moment looks like a rubbish dump,” he told AAP.
Some sentimental items placed up high survived.
“All the mattresses and everything, that’s all gone.”
“Ridiculous” quotes for contents insurance at the rented home were too much.
“We ran the risk, it is what it is,” Mr Newell said.
But support from the community has been almost overwhelming.
“I know there’s others out there that are worse off than us by miles.
“It’s a pretty big, costly clean-up for us all.
“We’ve just been cleaning up as best we can and trying to see what we can salvage.”
His immediate focus was on trying to restore some normality for his three children.
“They’re a bit devo that they’ve lost most of their toys and stuff like that.”
The SES has conducted 200 resupply operations in recent days to cut-off communities, including parts of Kempsey, Port Macquarie, Dungog, Port Stephens, Maitland, Central Coast and Nambucca Valley.
Up to 50,000 people are estimated to be isolated.
The agency responded to more than 7200 incidents and conducted 774 flood rescues.
Assistant Commissioner Allison Flaxman said almost 10,000 properties had been flooded, with damage assessments beginning on Saturday.
“Please allow damage assessment to take place before you begin to washout your property.
“We need to evaluate the extent of property and infrastructure damage to ensure your property is safe to return to,” Ms Flaxman said.
Premier Chris Minns visited Taree and said the state government wants to help the community get back on its feet as soon as possible.
Hardship and disaster grants are planned to become available in the coming days and efforts to improve flood resilience in Taree and other communities will follow.
But previous attempts, while well intentioned, had not always delivered in areas hit by flooding.
“We’re determined not to repeat the mistakes of the past, given we’re having more and more of these natural disasters,” Mr Minns said.

Feargal Sharkey reveals prostate ******* diagnosis and urges men to get checked
Feargal Sharkey reveals prostate ******* diagnosis and urges men to get checked
Feargal Sharkey has urged men to get tested for prostate ******* after revealing he was diagnosed with the disease after a GP visit for a sore throat.
The environmental campaigner and former lead singer of the Undertones said the health problem was “resolved” a year ago.
Speaking to the Daily Express, he said: “About a year and a half ago, I randomly went to see my GP with a sore throat.
“So my doctor, being the beautiful, wonderful, awkward, cantankerous old man that is went: ‘Oh Feargal, by the way, you’re 65 now, I’m going to run the full battery of tests.’
“Two days later, it turns out, I began a journey which led to the [diagnosis] of prostate *******. Thankfully, that’s all now been resolved a year ago. But here we are, had it not been for that random visit to my local GP, I would never have known that I was at that point carrying prostate *******, and if it had not been seen to, it could have been a very different ending and a very different outcome to my life.
“The reason I’m very happy to talk about it is because if there’s one man out there over the age of 45 go and see your GP. Go and get the blood test done.”
Earlier this year, prostate ******* became the most commonly diagnosed type of ******* in England, surpassing breast ******* for two consecutive years. In 2023 there were 55,033 prostate ******* diagnoses.
On Sunday, the former US president Joe Biden was diagnosed with an “aggressive form” of prostate ******* that has spread to his bones.
Sharkey urged men to get a blood test for the disease, which can be treated easily in its early stages. “Now, for one in eight of you, you will be put in the same journey I’ve had and it’s quite astonishing to think that in this country right now, one in eight men have prostate *******,” he said. “Most of them don’t even know it. So go and have the blood test and if you’re lucky, you’ll walk away.”
He also expressed his “admiration” for the six-time Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy, who disclosed in October he has “two to four years” left to live after being diagnosed with stage 4 ******* which had metastasised from his prostate.
“I have such unbelievable admiration for Chris Hoy over the last couple of months. If you end up where Chris is, well you’re now looking for a very different outcome and not the one you were expecting for your life, my friend. So, for a blood test – go get it done right now.”

Zelensky condemns Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine amid prisoner swap
Zelensky condemns Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine amid prisoner swap
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky early Saturday condemned Russia’s overnight strikes on several areas in Ukraine, including Kyiv, as the two sides began the first stages of a prisoner swap this week.
Zelensky wrote on social media that the overnight attack targeted the Odesa, Vinnytsia, Sumy, Kharkiv, Donetsk, Kyiv and Dnipro regions, which suffered heavy damages. He added that the Kremlin’s drones and missiles “targeted” civilians.
“There are fatalities. My condolences to the families and loved ones,” he wrote on social platform X. “With each such attack, the world becomes more certain that the cause of prolonging the war lies in Moscow.”
“Ukraine has proposed a ceasefire many times — both a full one and one in the skies. It all has been ignored,” the Ukrainian leader added.
Zelensky stressed that only sanctions, imposed by the U.S. and Western Europe, will force Russia into agreeing to a ceasefire.
The Kremlin fired ballistic missiles and targeted Kyiv with drones overnight, injuring 15 people and damaging several apartment buildings, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks came after Ukraine’s drone attacks on Russia earlier this week, including deep inside the Kremlin’s territory.
The overnight attacks unfolded as the two sides, engaged in the war for over three years, had successfully swapped prisoners. Early Saturday, each side brought home 307 soldiers as part of the deal, ironed out in Turkey, to ultimately exchange 1,000 prisoners.
Zelensky said that, so far, 697 prisoners have been brought back to Ukraine, with more expected to be swapped on Sunday.
“Among those who returned today are warriors from our Armed Forces, the State Border Guard Service, the National Guard of Ukraine,” Zelensky wrote in a separate post on Saturday. “I thank everyone involved in the exchange process, those who have been working around the clock.”
The attacks also come as President Trump has largely stepped back from his demands for an immediate 30-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Instead, Trump has pressed the two sides to come to the negotiation table to discuss what broader peace talks could look like.

Police officer fighting for life with two men arrested on suspicion of attempted *******
Police officer fighting for life with two men arrested on suspicion of attempted *******
A police officer is fighting for his life after being seriously injured in a collision while on duty in Buckinghamshire.
Thames Valley Police have arrested two men, aged 28 and 38 from Slough, on suspicion of attempted ******* and causing serious injury by dangerous driving after an incident in Stoke Poges on Thursday evening (22 May).
A third man, 43 from Slough, was also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and perverting the course of justice.
The incident occurred at about 10.20pm on the B416 Bells Hill, between Decies Way and Rogers Lane, while the officer was on duty.
Allen *****, a 56-year-old postman who lives in the area, said: “The neighbours heard a car in a ****-de-sac race around and come back, but nobody saw anything as far as I know.
“I came out in the morning and the road is closed.”
Jennifer Tulloch, 79, who also lives nearby, said: “I only saw blue flashing lights that evening.
“It’s horrible, I think he’s seriously injured. He’s not local, I don’t think. I think he was on duty. We would have heard by now if he was local.”
The officer remained in life-threatening condition in hospital on Saturday. The force said it is supporting the officer’s family through this difficult time.
Matthew Barber, police and crime commissioner for Thames Valley, said: “My thoughts are with the officer, his family and his colleagues who will also be deeply affected.
“It is another stark reminder of the dangers that our police and emergency service colleagues face on a daily basis.
“Thames Valley Police is supporting the officer’s family at this difficult time.”
David Moore, Conservative councillor for Farnhams and Stoke Poges, said: “I am deeply shocked and saddened to learn that one of our brave police officers is fighting for his life following this horrific incident.
“My thoughts and prayers are with him and his loved ones at this incredibly difficult time, and I wish him a full and swift recovery.
“This has shaken Stoke Poges and our wider community across south Bucks. Residents and councillors alike are appalled by this incident.
“I urge anyone with information to come forward and support Thames Valley Police’s investigation so that justice can be served.”
Police asked that anyone with more information contact them either online or by calling 101, quoting reference 43250252869.

At West Point, Trump rips DEI policies in rally-style speech
At West Point, Trump rips DEI policies in rally-style speech
By Jeff Mason
WEST POINT, New York (Reuters) -President Donald Trump ripped U.S. diversity and inclusion policies, knocked NATO, and took credit for building up the military on Saturday in a campaign-style commencement speech at the prestigious West Point Military Academy in New York.
Trump, wearing a suit and his signature red “Make America Great Again” cap, mixed advice to “work hard” with a list of his top grievances about cultural and political issues while speaking to a stadium filled with cadets, family members and a largely supportive crowd.
“The job of the U.S. Armed Forces is not to host drag shows, to transform foreign cultures,” Trump said. “The military’s job is to dominate any foe and annihilate any threat to America, anywhere, anytime, in any place.”
Since coming into office for the second time in January, Trump has rolled back diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programs in the military and throughout the government as part of a larger effort to rescind policies enacted by his predecessor Joe Biden.
“We’ve liberated our troops from divisive and demeaning political trainings,” Trump told the 1,002 cadets graduating from the academy. “There will be no more critical race theory or transgender for everybody forced onto our brave men and women in uniform, or on anybody else for that matter in this country.”
Trump has been a strong supporter of the military even as he has put his own stamp on it, as he has other branches of government. In February he fired the then chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General C.Q. Brown, and pushed out five other admirals and generals in an unprecedented shake-up of military leadership.
It was the second time Trump addressed graduates of the academy on the Hudson River following his appearance in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when cadets sat further apart and wore masks to prevent spread of the virus.
West Point aims to educate the next generation of Army leaders for a military that is meant to be apolitical and is sworn to defend the U.S. Constitution.
In a speech full of partisan rhetoric on Saturday, Trump took credit for rebuilding the Army and referenced his tariff-fueled trade war while repeating his longstanding criticism of NATO allies for not spending more on defense.
“We’ve been ripped off by every nation in the world on trade. We’ve been ripped off at the NATO level,” Trump said. “We’ve been ripped off like no country has ever been ripped off, but they don’t rip us off anymore.”
The president will preside over the Army’s celebration of its 250th anniversary on June 14 with a parade on one of Washington’s main thoroughfares. The anniversary coincides with Trump’s own birthday.
This week Trump spoke about a signature piece of his military vision, announcing he had selected a design for the $175-billion Golden Dome missile defense shield and named a Space Force general to head the program aimed at blocking threats from China and Russia. Trump said on Saturday the shield would protect West Point.
Experts have said the Golden Dome could provoke other states to launch similar systems or develop more advanced weapons to evade the missile shield, escalating an arms race in space.
