  1. Two-year-old debutant takes the eye as Belmont is postponed prior to Sprint Two-year-old debutant takes the eye as Belmont is postponed prior to Sprint Following two encouraging trials and hot betting support, newcomer Too Darn Stormy made a winning start to his career courtesy of a brilliant William Pike ride. From gate 11, Pike pushed his way to be prominent and wedged his way into a position one-off the fence in fifth place. The son of Too Darn Hot, who was backed from $7 down to $2.45 on TABtouch, travelled powerfully into the home bend as Moonwalk ($5.50) mastered Queen Selyse ($126). As Moonwalk committed for home 250m out, Pike unwound Too Darn Stormy down the outside, making his run with Playin’it Sweet ($5). At the 150m, both Moonwalk and Pony Up ($34) dipped while Queen Selyse stumbled noticeably, further enhancing Too Darn Stormy’s already tight winning claims. Despite a gallant fighting effort from Moonwalk, Too Darn Stormy drew away to win by a half-length on his fellow debutante. Camera IconToo Darn Stormy wins on debut. Dan Morton turned out some capable youngsters earlier in the season and Too Darn Stormy appears yet another Ascot carnival prospect for the trainer later this year. “It was a little bit sticky being wide early, but he slotted in nicely and the horse was good enough to get it done,” Morton said. “I’ll probably give him another go around. He’s been well looked after to this point, so he’s fit and ready to go around again. “We’ll get a couple of runs under his belt and then look at the end of the year. “It goes a long way when they’re schooled up good for you, which he has been. “Hopefully he can keep building on that for us. He’s a nice horse.” Pike also credited the attitude of the gelding, saying he was a ready-made racehorse despite his inexperience. “Initially I thought, ‘this is good, I’ll get across easily’ but a couple kicked up quite strongly,” Pike said. “I was umming and ahhing on what to do, whether I give him a good kick and go around. “Luckily for me, two-year-olds are green and they’re wobbly and a couple of holes appeared, and I was able to get a nice cart up behind them. “He was actually an absolute ripper. He jumped cleanly, came back to me when the pace steadied and, most importantly, has a lovely turn of foot. “He trialled professionally, he’s racing professionally, and there’s definitely some upside there.” Upon review of the race footage, stewards were accompanied by senior jockeys and trainers to assess the portion of the track near the 150m where the three horses had stumbled. Stewards could find no identifiable reasons for numerous horses reacting to the area, but the track was deemed unsafe for racing to continue and subsequently postponed the meeting. 2. Ukraine is using helium-filled balloons to extend the range of its attack drones Ukraine is using helium-filled balloons to extend the range of its attack drones Aerobavovna, a Ukrainian startup, is making helium-filled balloons to aid Ukraine’s drone attacks. Its balloons help to keep drones on the grid when they’re on the ground or flying low. Aerobavovna’s CEO told *** that 50 aerostats are deployed along the frontline. Against the backdrop of Ukraine’s drone-packed skies, one startup is offering a surprisingly low-tech solution to a modern problem. Aerobavovna, which was founded in 2023, is supplying Ukraine’s military with tethered, helium-filled balloons equipped with airborne radio repeaters, extending the range and effectiveness of the country’s drones. The Russia-Ukraine conflict has been defined by drone warfare, but drone operators have faced a number of challenges, including line-of-sight obstacles, which can cause drones to lose contact if radio signals are disrupted, and electronic warfare systems, which can jam communications. That’s where Aerobavovna comes in. The company’s aerostats are designed for surveillance, communication, and first-person-view (FPV) drone signal transmission, and help establish stable communication signals in the battlefield’s tricky conditions. Fitted with antennas and radio repeaters, Aerobavovna’s aerostats anchor high over the battlefield to help Ukrainian drones continue operating in spite of obstacles and to maintain comms over much greater distances. You need “some kind of airborne radio repeater that allows drones to fly closer to the ground,” Yuriy Vysoven, Aerobavovna’s CEO, told Business Insider. “For ground drones, it’s crucial because their ground-to-ground signal would only reach the first hill; beyond that, you lose direct line of sight and, consequently, the connection,” he said, adding that about 50 balloons were deployed “all around the front line” in Ukraine. While aerostats aren’t new technology, Aerobavovna’s products have been designed to meet the demands of the modern battlefield, allowing for rapid deployment times. Aerobavovna’s balloons, which the firm says can be deployed in five to 25 minutes, are made with lightweight polymers and can remain airborne for up to seven days. They can lift repeater systems up to a height of 1 km (about 0.6 miles) and carry a payload of up to 25 kg (around 55 lbs), the company said. The company, which says it produces around 10 to 20 balloons per month, recently announced that it had developed a new aerostat capable of carrying more advanced equipment. In an interview with the Ukrainian outlet Militarnyi, engineers from Aerobavovna said they had created a new model that can hold a payload of up to 66 lbs, enabling it to carry more powerful equipment such as electronic warfare systems. While the company has found success supplying tethered aerostats to the Ukrainian military, it continues to grapple with technical and structural hurdles as it scales. One persistent challenge is maintaining stability and precision in airborne conditions, especially critical for payloads like FPV drone radio repeaters, which require highly accurate antenna positioning. “Stability is a big problem,” Vysoven said. “For FPV drone radio repeaters, you need to position the antennas really, really precisely,” but wind and turbulence make that very hard. Funding also remains a major constraint. Despite strong demand and a battlefield-proven product, capital is scarce for Ukrainian hardware startups. Vysoven said the company has received investment offers in the range of $40 million, but considers that far below what’s needed and called that figure “a shame.” “In California, you can raise that with just a pitch deck and a latte. I have a real product, 30 engineers building it, and it’s already deployed,” he said. “And we still struggle to raise enough to scale,” he added. 3. Trump floats bringing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public. Here’s what it could mean to homebuyers and investors. Trump floats bringing Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public. Here’s what it could mean to homebuyers and investors. President Trump said this week he may take Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac public, winding down 17 years of federal control over two central parts of the U.S. housing market — a move that was cheered on by Trump ally and noted Wall Street investor Bill Ackman. Ending the conservatorship of Fannie and Freddie — which guarantee trillions of dollars worth of mortgages — would be complicated, and critics say it’s risky. A plan to do so in Mr. Trump’s first term did not come to pass. But the president says he’ll decide “in the near future” whether to try again, pointing to the firms’ return to profitability since their 2008 government takeover. “Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are doing very well, throwing off a lot of CASH, and the time would seem to be right,” Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social late Wednesday — prompting a double-digit rally in shares the next day of both Fannie and Freddie, which trade over the counter rather than on a major stock exchange. The idea of taking the two government-sponsored enterprises public has drawn some support for years, with advocates arguing Fannie and Freddie could function better if released from federal control. Releasing Fannie and Freddie could also benefit some investors who have bought shares in the firms over the years, betting on an eventual federal spinoff of the mortgage giants. One of the largest — and most vocal — is Ackman, whose hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management invested in Fannie and Freddie over a decade ago. The firm is the biggest private holder of Fannie, at just over 115 million shares according to S&P Capital IQ data — worth over $1.2 billion at Friday’s price. Ackman said in an earnings call Thursday that Pershing Square owns about 220 million shares in Fannie and Freddie combined. Other major holders of the two enterprises include Capital Research and Management Company, which has the largest known stake in Freddie ($350 million) and the second-largest stake in Fannie (over $1 billion), according to S&P Capital IQ. Paulson & Co., founded by billionaire John Paulson, also invested in Fannie and Freddie at one point, the Wall Street Journal reported in 2021 — though the size of its current stake is unclear. Since Mr. Trump was reelected last year, Ackman has publicly pushed on X to end the federal conservatorship of Fannie and Freddie, calling it a good deal for taxpayers that could generate as much as $300 billion for the government. In January, Pershing Square put together a presentation called “The Art of the Deal” that made the case in more detail. “Trump likes big deals and this would be the biggest deal in history. I am confident he will get it done,” Ackman wrote on X in December. When Mr. Trump announced Wednesday he’s “giving very serious consideration” to the idea, Ackman responded on X with a thumbs-up emoji. In Thursday’s earnings call, Ackman said, “[W]e’re extremely encouraged by the president’s announcement.” Ackman also said Thursday the firm wasn’t aware of any plans by the Trump administration to release Fannie and Freddie from conservatorship. Famous for his sharp-elbowed activist investing strategy and pandemic-era bets, Ackman has made waves in recent months for his political views. He endorsed Mr. Trump in 2024 and has taken aim at the leadership of Harvard University over its handling of Israel-****** war protests. Skeptics of releasing Fannie and Freddie, like Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren, have pushed back on the idea, warning it could benefit investors at the risk of disrupting the mortgage market. “[The president] hasn’t come to Congress with any kind of plan for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac – and the last thing we need is to privatize them in a way that rewards Wall Street while driving up housing prices for people already struggling to buy homes,” Warren, a Massachusetts lawmaker and the top Democrat on the Senate banking committee, told CBS News in a statement. White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement, “The Trump Administration is committed to strengthening the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) to advance the President’s mission of restoring the dream of homeownership for all Americans. Any actions under consideration will be carefully evaluated in a safe and sound manner to deliver on the President’s historic agenda.” Ackman’s Pershing Square declined to comment to CBS News. FHFA — which oversees Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — did not respond to a request for comment. What are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — and why could they be privatized? The government created Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac — or, more formally, the Federal National Mortgage Association and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation — in the 20th century, with Fannie Mae dating back to the Great Depression. They essentially buy mortgages from lenders like banks and bundle them together into guaranteed mortgage-backed securities that can be sold to all kinds of investors — a space known as the secondary mortgage market. The point of this work is to bring more money into the nation’s residential lending system, making it easier for average families to buy a home. Fannie Mae describes itself as “the backbone of the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage.” For decades, Fannie and Freddie were both publicly traded companies, though many observers believed they operated with an “implicit guarantee” that the government would step in if either company wobbled. But after a mortgage crisis sparked the 2008 recession, the Bush administration bailed out Fannie and Freddie and put them under federal conservatorship to save them from collapse. Since then, the FHFA has effectively controlled the two firms. That arrangement wasn’t necessarily supposed to be permanent, but it has lasted for over a decade, with the two companies making billions in payments to the government. A push for the government to end its conservatorship of Fannie and Freddie has been brewing for years. Some critics view the firms as unfairly dominant in the mortgage industry and believe they fill a role that should be played by the private sector. Other supporters of privatization like Ackman argue it could provide a windfall to taxpayers, partly because, in a holdover from the financial crisis, the government has the right to purchase almost 80% of both firms’ shares. Opponents of privatization argue it could push up mortgage rates, especially if Fannie and Freddie are no longer viewed as backstopped by the government. How that plays out could depend on how the government decides to end the conservatorship, though, and whether it still offers some kind of guarantee. Credit agency Fitch Ratings said it would keep rating Fannie and Freddie’s debt similarly to the U.S. government’s debt if the firms maintain a federal backstop, but if not, they would be rated separately — and could slip if their market dominance shrinks. The risk of higher mortgage costs could be a major stumbling block in an era of elevated interest rates. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Bloomberg earlier this year, “anything that is done around a safe and sound release [of Fannie and Freddie] is going to hinge on the effect of long-term mortgage rates.” In part for that reason, Jaret Seiberg, an analyst at TD Cowen, said in a note Friday that the firm expects the Trump administration to make changes to Fannie and Freddie at a “slower and more deliberate” pace than it has moved on other issues, like tariffs. “Tariffs may have impacted the stock market, but they did not result in immediate price hikes at Walmart or Dollar General. By contrast, the price of mortgages will respond to each recap and release development,” Seiberg wrote. “That makes the political cost more immediate and gives the President less room to alter positions as he has done on trade.” In his first term, Mr. Trump’s Treasury Department proposed ending Fannie and Freddie’s conservatorship. While the first Trump administration ultimately didn’t take this step, it made some changes to how the two institutions operate. Ackman’s Pershing Square called releasing Fannie and Freddie the “Unfinished Business of the First Trump Administration” in its January presentation. The firm laid out a possible roadmap to turn Fannie and Freddie into independent publicly traded companies: It suggested holding initial public offerings by 2026 for Fannie and 2027 for Freddie, and then allowing the federal government to sell its stakes over five years. But it’s unclear how — or if — the Trump administration may pursue the idea. In his Senate confirmation hearing earlier this year, FHFA Director William Pulte said he believed that any end to government control of Fannie and Freddie needed to be “extremely thoughtful.” “While their conservatorship should not be indefinite, any exit from conservatorship must be carefully planned to ensure the safety and soundness of the housing market without upward pressure on mortgage rates,” Pulte said. 6. How appealing property taxes can benefit new homeowners How appealing property taxes can benefit new homeowners If you just bought a house, it may be a good time to check the accuracy of your property tax assessment, experts say. Your property tax assessment is the way officials determine the value of your property for tax purposes. Inaccuracies about your home that factor into that formula could mean that you’re overpaying. If it’s inaccurate, you likely have most of the essential documents you need to appeal, as part of your recent home purchase, according to Sal Cataldo, a real estate lawyer and partner at O’Doherty & Cataldo in Sayville, New York. The title report, for instance, is going to tell you the age of the house, Cataldo said. You might have a home inspection report on hand that details the property’s flaws, as well as an appraisal and your mortgage, which show the value of the house and the comparable value in the neighborhood. “You’ve gotten a wealth of information about your house, whether you realize it or not,” Cataldo said. More from Personal Finance: House Republican bill calls for ******* child tax credit College majors with the best and worst job prospects Here’s how to save on groceries amid food price inflation A home ***** will typically trigger a property tax reassessment because the property is changing hands, with the new market value applied to the assessment. But the specific rules of when the new value is applied and the frequency of reassessments will depend on your area. Here’s why it may be valuable to add reviewing your property tax assessment to your to-do list as a newly minted homeowner: Property taxes on the rise In addition to your mortgage payment, home insurance and maintenance costs, property taxes are another factor to consider as you assess your housing expenses. In recent years, property taxes have climbed because of rising home values and tax rates. The median property tax bill in the U.S. in 2024 was $3,500, up 2.8% from $3,349 in 2023, according to an April report by Realtor. How much you pay varies widely depending on where you live, and some areas see higher bills and price hikes. As of 2023, the median property tax for homeowners in New York City was $9,937, LendingTree found in a recent report. The city ranks first among the metropolitan areas with the highest median property taxes. Rounding out the top three are San Jose, California and San Francisco, where homeowners paid a median $9,554 and $8,156, respectively. Inaccuracies may be costing you It’s not uncommon for properties to be over-assessed, meaning you end up paying more taxes than you should be, said Pete Sepp, president of the National Taxpayers Union Foundation: “It pays to check.” Sometimes it’s because details in your assessment were never corrected over the years, such as an incorrect square footage of livable space or the amount of bathrooms that are actually in your home. NTUF estimates 30% to 60% of taxable property in the U.S. is over-assessed, based on reports from individual state tax assessors. Success in the appeal can lead to savings for several years as the change becomes the basis for the next assessment, said Sepp. While some state or local governments reassess annually, others have less-frequent cycles with gaps of several years. Some have no set schedule at all. Over 40% of homeowners across the U.S. could potentially save $100 or more per year by protesting their assessment value, with median savings of $539 a year, per Realtor.com estimates. 8. Assassin’s Creed Hexe – Europe Witch-Hunt Setting, Female Lead Rumors, Horror Tone, and Everything We Know Assassin’s Creed Hexe – Europe Witch-Hunt Setting, Female Lead Rumors, Horror Tone, and Everything We Know Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe was first officially revealed back in 2022, and despite the years since, it remains one of the most mysterious projects of Ubisoft. While Shadows gave us a clear action-packed direction with its dual protagonists, Hexe looks to take the franchise in a chilling new direction. From the eerie trailer to cryptic developer comments, it’s clear this isn’t your typical leap-of-faith adventure. Hexe promises something darker, stranger, and entirely different from what we’ve come to expect from the Assassin’s Creed franchise. Here’s everything we know so far. When will Assassin’s Creed Hexe be released? There is no official release date for Assassin’s Creed Hexe yet. Industry speculation and Ubisoft’s own roadmap hint at a launch around 2026 or possibly 2027. The timeline aligns with Ubisoft’s plan to integrate Hexe into their new Animus Hub, following the release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows. However, as Shadows experienced several delays and with the current internal shifts at Ubisoft, it’s hard to even pin down the year. Since Hexe is confirmed to be a mainline title (first mentioned during the 2022 UbiForward), 2027 seems like a fair assumption for now (if we go by the recent roadmap). What kind of game is Assassin’s Creed Hexe going to be? The obvious answer used to be “stealth-action,” but Ubisoft has teased something much more unconventional. Hexe is described as a “very different” title. It seems that the installment may be departing from the historical action-adventure formula to embrace darker, horror-infused elements. The game is supposedly blending RPG mechanics with supernatural and psychological themes. This shift toward a witchy, eerie atmosphere could redefine the series’ genre entirely, taking players from assassinations and politics to fear, paranoia, and the occult. Trailers and Fan Reactions Forget the Hidden Blade, bring garlic and a crucifix. | Image Credit: Ubisoft Ubisoft dropped just 30 seconds of Assassin’s Creed Hexe footage during its 2022 showcase, and that’s all it took to send fans spiraling into speculation mode. The trailer doesn’t show any characters, combat, or gameplay. Instead, it sets a chilling tone: dead leaves drifting through a foggy forest, dogs barking, and an Assassin’s insignia made from broken branches, slowly spinning over an open flame. It’s more horror short film than a video game teaser, and fans immediately noticed. The reaction? A mix of awe and excited confusion. Ubisoft’s Marc-Alexis Cote even encouraged viewers to “tear apart that trailer and find all its secrets,” and the community has happily taken up that challenge. Rumored story, setting, and characters If the trailers are any indication, Assassin’s Creed Hexe is about to drag the series into its darkest setting yet, literally. The game is rumored to be set in 16th-century Central Europe, smack in the middle of the Holy Roman Empire’s brutal witch hunts. This was a time when fear ruled the land, suspicion spread faster than wildfire, and tens of thousands were executed in the name of rooting out evil. Now imagine navigating that world… as an Assassin. There’s also growing speculation that Hexe will feature a female lead, possibly one accused of witchcraft herself. If true, this opens the door for a deeply personal and powerful story, blending historical tragedy with the franchise’s signature stealth and rebellion themes. Forget climbing towers and chasing Templars under blue skies, Hexe might have us surviving torch-lit mobs, spectral paranoia, and something even more terrifying: the truth behind the hysteria. Who’s developing Assassin’s Creed Hexe? The franchise is done sneaking around… now it’s creeping. | Image Credit: Ubisoft Montreal Behind the dark and mysterious curtain of Assassin’s Creed Hexe is none other than Ubisoft Montreal, the studio that launched the entire franchise back in 2007 and most recently brought us Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. These are the veterans of the Hidden Blade, and they’re not afraid to push boundaries when it comes to reinventing the series. On top of that, Clint Hocking is leading the charge as creative director. If that name rings a bell, it’s because he’s the mind behind genre-bending titles like Far Cry 2 and Watch Dogs: Legion. Hocking is known for ambitious, sometimes experimental storytelling and gameplay systems, exactly the kind of vision that could turn Hexe into something completely unexpected. With this team at the helm, don’t expect just another Assassin’s Creed game. Expect a bold reimagining. Pre-order information At the time of writing this, Ubisoft hasn’t shared any details about pre-orders, collector’s editions, or special bundles for Assassin’s Creed Hexe. Given its early development stage and projected release window, fans will have to wait a bit longer to start throwing money at limited editions. Available platforms Given the platform rollout of Assassin’s Creed Shadows, it’s safe to expect Hexe on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (likely via Steam). With the next-gen Nintendo Switch 2 on the horizon (June 5), don’t be surprised if that console joins the party as well. Integration with the Animus Hub If we take Ubisoft’s words at face value, it plans to include Hexe in the evolving Animus Hub, a unified launcher and ecosystem for the Assassin’s Creed universe introduced alongside Assassin’s Creed Shadows on March 20. This approach aims to keep players connected to the franchise through shared features and seamless access to multiple titles. Maybe this approach interconnects the different installments and expands on the interconnected world of the franchise. In the end, Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe stands out as a promising new chapter in the series: a bold fusion of history, horror, and RPG elements set amidst one of Europe’s darkest eras. With a talented development team, a mysterious but captivating premise, and a shift in tone, it is shaping up to redefine what the franchise can be. 9. Forget the iPhone 17 Air for a moment — these are the 5 most exciting rumors about the other iPhone 17 models Forget the iPhone 17 Air for a moment — these are the 5 most exciting rumors about the other iPhone 17 models When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: AppleTrack When it comes to rumors about this year’s iPhone releases, the iPhone 17 Air is the belle of the ball. And it’s easy to understand why — the rumored ultra-thin model would mark a departure for an iPhone lineup that’s been set in stone for several years now. Naturally, people want to hear about what an entirely new iPhone will be like, and rumor mongers are eager to fill in the blanks. But all the excitement over the iPhone 17 Air threatens to overshadow the rest of the iPhone 17 lineup. And that would be a mistake as this year’s iPhones figure to deliver some key changes to Apple’s phones, even if they’re not as headline-grabbing as an ultra-thin frame that is rumored to be slimmer than even the 5.8mm-thin Galaxy S25 Edge. We’re keeping tabs on all the iPhone 17 rumors here — not just the latest on the iPhone 17 Air, but what’s going to happen to all the models Apple is likely to introduce later this year. So in case you only have eyes for the Air, here’s a look at the most exciting rumors we’ve heard so far about the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Finally, a fast refreshing display Credit: Future The entry-level iPhone has stood out for years when compared to the best phones you can buy — and not for a good reason. Rather, it’s because the iPhone 16 is one of the few flagship models currently available where you’re still stuck with a 60Hz display. In recent years, smartphone makers have shifted to displays with adaptive refresh rates, which can ramp up to 120Hz when there’s a lot of on-screen activity. A faster refresh rate means smoother scrolling and more immersive graphics on games that can take advantage of fast-refreshing displays. It’s a dramatically better experience when you see a phone with a fast-refreshing display next to one with the screen locked at 60Hz. Apple’s been releasing iPhone Pro models with fast refreshing displays since the iPhone 13 Pro came out in 2021, but it’s kept giving the standard iPhone a 60Hz display for the three iPhone launches since then. In the meantime, not only do phones that share the iPhone 16’s $799 starting price offer fast-refreshing displays of their own, so do many of the best cheap phones under $500. The iPhone is way behind the curve here. Things should change this fall. Multiple reports claim that Apple is switching to an LTPO display for its entry-level flagship — that’s the kind of panel that supports faster refresh rates. The Pro models may still have a wider refresh rate range — the current iPhone 16 Pro offerings can scale all the way down to 1Hz when the on-screen action is static, for example — but it seems nailed on that the iPhone 17 will offer a much more capable screen than its predecessor. A telephoto lens upgrade on the iPhone 17 Pro Credit: Apple/ Tom’s Guide The last couple iPhone upgrade cycles have seen a number of improvements to the cameras on Apple’s Pro models. The iPhone 15 Pro Max added a longer optical zoom — a feature adopted by the iPhone 16 Pro last fall. And both Pro models saw their ultrawide camera sensors boosted to 48MP. Apparently, Apple isn’t done with the camera array upgrades. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are both in line to get a 48MP telephoto lens this fall. And yes, that would mean three 48MP sensors making up the rear cameras on the iPhone 17 Pro. The improved telephoto lens could come at a cost. Currently, the iPhone 16 Pro models support a 5x optical zoom, wile one rumor suggests the higher resolution sensor will reduce zoom capabilities to 3.5x. Nevertheless, the higher resolution camera could mean more detailed images even if longer zooms may not look as sharp as before. Lots of memory Credit: Tom’s Guide Apple is all about AI these days, and you’d imagine a whole new batch of Apple Intelligence tools are in the works with this fall’s phone release in mind. And there’s still the matter of the AI-based Siri improvements Apple promised with iOS 18 before pushing them back to a later update. All this AI requires a lot of memory. The current iPhone lineup comes with 8GB of RAM, based on teardowns. (Memory and battery size are two iPhone specs Apple doesn’t officially reveal.) But reports claim that the new iPhones could bump that number to 12GB with an eye toward future-proofing the phones for future AI enhancements. It’s worth noting that some of the rumors suggest that only the iPhone 17 Pro models are in line to see an increase in memory, with the iPhone 17 potentially sticking at 8GB. Still, if you’re excited about the prospect of better Apple Intelligence performance, you’ll want Apple to add as much memory as possible to whatever models it can. New iPhone 17 Pro design Credit: AppleTrack It doesn’t sound like a major redesign, and not everyone’s going to love the rumored look, but from the renders that have emerged so far, the iPhone 17 Pro models should have a different look from their predecessors. So if you think Apple’s designs have gone stale, you’ll want to at least take a look at what this fall’s releases could bring. Specifically, Apple sounds like it’s taking a page out of Google’s design manual and extending the camera array for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The triangular setup of the main, ultrawide and zoom lenses will remain in place, but the flash, LiDAR depth sensor and microphone will move to the other side of the phone. There could be a change up front on the iPhone 17 Pro models, too. Reports suggest Apple is going to shrink the Dynamic Island for the Pro and Pro Max, which will free up a little screen real estate. Credit: Future The tweaks don’t appear to be as prominent on the iPhone 17 renders we’ve seen. Leaked iPhone 17 designs show a pair of vertically stacked lenses housed in a rectangular camera bump rather than the oval array Apple used for the iPhone 16. Battery life improvements it doesn’t seem like any of the iPhone 17 models are due big boosts to battery size, though we might see some increased capacity here and there. The ******* advance could be a vapor cooling chamber in the iPhone 17 Pro models aimed at keeping the phones from overheating and suffering dips in performance. And as always, advances in power management from the new A19 silicon expected to power this year’s phones could improve battery life over the current models. Really, the battery capacity of the conventional iPhones could wind up contrasting with that of the iPhone 17 Air, which could have a 2,800 mAh power pack — a decidedly smaller power pack than the 3,561 mAh cell in the 6.1-inch iPhone 16. Even with a report that claims Apple could turn to a new generation of silicon-anode battery from TDK for the iPhone 17 Air, that thin phone could struggle to last a long time on a charge, making the endurance of the other iPhone 17 models seem even better by comparison. 12. The Washington Post: Teens are sexting with AI. Here’s what parents should know. The Washington Post: Teens are sexting with AI. Here’s what parents should know. Parents have another online activity to worry about. In a new tech-driven twist on “sexting”, teenagers are having romantic and ******* conversations with artificial intelligent chatbots. The chats can range from romance- and innuendo-filled to ********* graphic and violent, according to interviews with parents, conversations posted on social media, and experts. They are largely taking place on “AI companion” tools, but general-purpose AI apps like ChatGPT can also create ******* content with a few clever prompts. Experts warn the chats with AI can lead to unrealistic expectations of sex and relationship dynamics. Parents worry about the dangers to their children’s mental health, or exposing them to described ******* scenarios too young. Some think the tools might have some value, with limits. We tested 10 chatbots ourselves to identify the most popular AI characters, the types of conversations they have, what filters are in place and how easy they are to circumvent. Know your bots AI chatbots are open-ended chat interfaces that generate answers to complex questions, or banter in a conversational way about any topic. There is no shortage of places minors can find these tools, and that makes blocking them difficult. AI bots are websites, stand-alone apps and features built into existing services like Instagram or video games. There are different kinds of chatbots. The mainstream options are OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and Meta AI, which recently launched as a stand-alone app. These have stronger filters, and their main products aren’t designed for role-play. They can partake at least suggestive or romantic conversations and create ******* content with the right prompts. They can switch over to voice-based chat, reading the replies aloud in realistic — even sultry — sounding voices. Companion AI tools are far more popular for suggestive chats, including Character.AI, Replika, Talkie, Talk AI, SpicyChat and PolyBuzz. ChatGPT and Meta AI have also launched companion-chat options. These types of tools have libraries of characters and preprogrammed personalities, many designed with titillation in mind, like those from romance novels or the many “step-sibling” options on Meta’s AI Studio. We tested a Meta AI Studio chat, and the flirtatious direction of the “Step sis” character was immediately clear. The smaller apps tend to have fewer limits or filters. Look for anything that has “AI girlfriend,” “AI boyfriend,” or “AI companion” in the name or description. More are being added to app stores daily. What are they talking about? It’s not just sex, according to parents and experts. Teens are having a range of conversations with character bots, including friendly, therapeutic, funny and romantic ones. “We’re seeing teens experiment with different types of relationships – being someone’s wife, being someone’s father, being someone’s kid. There’s game and anime-related content that people are working though. There’s advice,” Robbie Torney, senior director of AI programs at US family advocacy group Common Sense Media, said. “The sex is part of it but it’s not the only part of it.” Some confide in AI chats, seeing them as a nonjudgmental space during a difficult developmental time. Others use them to explore their gender or sexuality. When they partake in ******* chats, they vary between innuendo and graphic descriptions. The chats can involve power dynamics and consent issues in ways that don’t mimic the real world. “Where some of the harm or risk comes in is the bots aren’t programmed to respond in the same way they would in a real relationship,” Mr Torney said. Aren’t there filters? The default settings on most AI companion tools allow, and sometimes encourage, risqué role play situations, based on our tests. Some stop before actual descriptions of sex appear, while others describe it but avoid certain words, like the names of body parts. There are work-arounds and paid options that can lead to more graphic exchanges. Prompts to get past filters — sometimes called jailbreaks — are shared in group chats, on Reddit and on GitHub. Sometimes all it requires is patience and ignoring warnings. A common technique is pretending you need help writing a book. Many apps have a built-in filter based on the age of the user. Meta said it prevents accounts registered as minors from searching for “romance” AI characters, and that ********* explicit chats are prohibited for users under 18. The filter can show parents what AI characters their children have used in the past week. Google says Gemini has different content restrictions for people it knows are under 18. Character.AI has stricter limits for people it knows are under 18, while some AI apps have teen modes that need to be turned on. In a recent risk assessment of companion AI apps, Common Sense Media found that safety measures like content restrictions and age limits were often easily circumvented. In our own tests, we were able to easily work around filters to generate detailed ******* content while logged in as an adult. On one filter we ran into while testing Character.AI, one of the most popular companion AI apps, the warning came up after the conversation described sex. What are the risks? Experts agreed that for children and young teens, it never makes sense to have access to unmonitored chatbots because of the risk that they can encounter inappropriate content. For older teens, the choice is more nuanced, the experts said, depending on how much exposure to ******* or intimate themes they already have, the types of content they’re accessing and what their parents consider appropriate. Potential harms from AI bots extend beyond ******* content, experts said. Researchers have been warning AI chatbots could become addictive or worsen mental health issues. There have been multiple lawsuits and investigations after teens died by suicide following conversations with chatbots. Common Sense Media also flagged harmful advice, like requests to self harm, as an issue with companion bots. Similar to too much ************, bots can exasperate loneliness, depression or withdrawal from real-world relationships, Megan Maas, an associate professor of human development and family at Michigan State University, said. They can also give a misleading picture of what it’s like to date. “They can create unrealistic expectations of what interpersonal romantic communication is, and how available somebody is to you,” Associate Professor Maas said. “How are we going to learn about ******* and romantic need-exchange in a relationship with something that has no needs?” Some experts said there can be advantages to teens exploring in a somewhat safe space, without the unpredictable factor of a human being on the other side. It’s a chance to practice some limited interpersonal skills, or ask questions someplace other than Google. “If you have a kid who has an AI chatbot and they’re mostly asking this bot questions they’re too embarrassed to ask you or a nurse or a therapist, then that chatbot is doing good things for that kid,” Associate Professor Maas said. However, the bots could replace much needed human experiences, like rejection. What can parents do? Monitor what apps your children and teens are using and if they require logins, make sure they are using accounts set up with their accurate age. Most built-in parental controls on tablets and smartphones will let you require permission when a child downloads a new app. Many of the companion apps are labeled “Teen” on the Google Play store and 17-years old and up on iOS. Set up your child’s devices with their correct age and add limits on app ratings to prevent them from being downloaded. Using their proper age on individual chatbot or social media accounts should trigger any built-in parental controls. However, most chatbots can easily be accessed online where accounts require only a self-reported age. Some internet-level filters can block access or flag specific language. Beyond regularly finding ways around parental controls, tweens and teens can access the internet at their school or on friends’ devices. Parents may want to prepare them for a world where they will need to know how to navigate these tools. Experts suggest creating an open and honest relationship with your child. Teach them about what AI is and isn’t, and how tech companies collect and use personal information. Check in regularly with your kids and make sure they feel safe coming to you with questions or issues. Have age-appropriate conversations about sex, and don’t shy away from embarrassing topics. © 2025 , The Washington Post Source link #Washington #Post #Teens #sexting #Heres #parents Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  13. Lindsey Graham Dumps Cold Water on Trump-Backed Budget Bill Lindsey Graham Dumps Cold Water on Trump-Backed Budget Bill While House Republicans celebrated passing the president’s “big, beautiful” spending bill by a one-vote margin Thursday, caucus members in the upper chamber remained unimpressed. Speaking with CNN’s Manu Raju later that day, South Carolina Senator Lindsay Graham shot down some of the cuts as “not real,” arguing that the House had done next to nothing to actually bring down federal spending. Even a $880 billion cut into Medicaid couldn’t offset the gargantuan price tag on extending Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, which are estimated to add somewhere between $3.8 trillion and $5.3 trillion to the national debt. Those numbers have ruffled feathers among congressional budget hawks, who were under the impression that the Trump administration would be sizing down spending rather than beefing it up. America’s national deficit is currently more than $36.8 trillion, as of the time of publishing. “Some of the Freedom Caucus members are warning you guys not to water down any of their cuts, what do you say to them?” Raju asked. Graham could only laugh. “Well, you had your chance,” the lawmaker said with a chuckle. “Some of these cuts are not real. And we’re talking about over a decade—you know, if you do a trillion and a half, that’s like a percent and a half.” “So don’t get high on our horse here that we’ve somehow made some major advancement of reducing spending because we didn’t,” Graham noted. Several conservative senators have indicated they won’t vote for the bill if it includes a debt limit increase, including Senators Rand Paul, Ron Johnson, and Rick Scott. The growing coalition of budget-conscious naysayers is threatening enough to potentially keep the bill from reaching the president’s desk, as Republicans grapple with their narrow majority in the Senate. 17. More About La Horde du Contrevent: The 2004 French Novel That Inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 More About La Horde du Contrevent: The 2004 French Novel That Inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Most Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 players probably think the game’s expedition concept came from typical JRPG tropes. They’d be wrong. The real inspiration comes from a French novel so “obscure” that it’s never been translated into English. La Horde du Contrevent by Alain Damasio hit French bookstores in 2004 and became a cult classic. Twenty-one years later, Sandfall Interactive turned its core premise into what is now one of the most celebrated RPGs in recent memory. The connection runs deeper than surface-level borrowing. This isn’t just about “numbered expeditions”; it’s about existential dread wrapped in beautiful prose. The novel that nobody outside France knows Damasio’s masterpiece follows groups of warriors attempting to reach the source of an eternal wind that dominates their world. Every expedition fails. New groups form, push further than their predecessors, then inevitably perish in the attempt. Sound familiar? That’s because Sandfall Interactive lifted this structure wholesale for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and the developers weren’t shy about admitting it either. François Meurisse, the game’s producer, explained the connection to CNET in a recent interview: About the countdown, I think Guillaume woke up one morning and though that idea could be cool. But the expedition concept, the special inspiration behind it is a French novel called La Horde du Contrevent. It wasn’t translated in other languages, but it’s a cult classic now in French, published in 2004. The honesty is refreshing. Most developers would dance around their influences or claim everything was original. Meurisse straight-up credits the novel as fundamental to their vision. He continued by describing what specifically captivated the development team about Damasio’s work: It’s a great novel about a group of warriors, like an expedition of 20 or 30 people that try to find the origin of the wind in the world, which always blows from west to east. The parallel structure becomes obvious when laid out this way. Both stories feature large groups with specialized roles attempting to reach an impossible destination. The wind source mirrors The Paintress as an unknowable force that must be confronted. Every expedition fails, and they send a new one. We loved this idea of like trying to overcome what the best group did before you, trying to find out which point they reached in the world, how they failed and will you succeed? That cyclical failure concept became the emotional backbone of Clair Obscur. The Paintress erases everyone who reaches age 34, so Expedition 33 represents humanity’s final desperate attempt. From French literature to gaming excellence Literary adaptation without the usual Hollywood butchering. | Image Credit: Sandfall Interactive The adaptation process reveals something fascinating about cross-media inspiration. Damasio’s novel works through internal monologue and poetic description, while video games need action, combat, and player agency. Sandfall Interactive solved this by keeping the emotional core while completely reimagining the mechanics. The wind becomes The Paintress. The endless journey becomes turn-based combat with real-time defensive elements. What they preserved was the psychological weight—both the novel and game focus on characters who know they’re probably walking toward death but choose hope anyway. That’s not typical video game storytelling. It’s literary fiction disguised as entertainment, and it works brilliantly because the developers understood what made the source material compelling beyond its surface elements. The novel’s influence extends beyond plot structure, too. Damasio wrote each character with distinct narrative voices and specialized roles within the group, and Clair Obscur mirrors this with party members who feel genuinely different rather than cosmetically varied. The untranslated status actually works in the game’s favor—players experience the story fresh without preconceptions about how it “should” be adapted. 18. WAFL 2025: South Fremantle smash Subiaco for biggest loss since 2012 by 103 points WAFL 2025: South Fremantle smash Subiaco for biggest loss since 2012 by 103 points South Fremantle have picked the bones of a hapless Subiaco clean in a 103-point mauling at Community Bank Oval on Saturday, the Lions’ largest defeat since 2012. Trey Ruscoe and Brandon Donaldson outscored the Lions on their own with five and four goals, respectively, while Dylan Main was just one point short of doing the same with three goals in the embarrassing display. Subiaco barely released a whimper as they were hunted out of the game. Matt Parker took little notice of the pouring rain, his classy ball use defying an otherwise uninspiring contest as he collected 28 touches. He also could have had five goals had he kicked straight, but ended with one to complement another from Jake Florenca, who also produced 34 disposals, five tackles and seven clearances. Henry Berenger was a silver lining for the Lions, stopping Ruscoe kicking any majors for the best part of two and half quarters in the 18.14 (122) to 2.7 (19) smashing. Half of Ruscoe’s six first-quarter touches came with goals, the electric small forward constantly free inside 50 as the Bulldogs booted the first five majors. Taj Schofield, who was Subiaco’s best on the day, opened the scoring for WA a week ago and provided the same for the Lions to avoid a goalless first term. Camera IconSouth Fremantle defender Noah Strom gets a handball out of traffic. Credit: Jack Foley/JACK FOLEY A quarter-time downpour killed any chance of a free-flowing contest, but Subiaco relished the tight spaces, staling South Fremantle’s scoring. However, they couldn’t deny Parker, who snapped a classy goal on the run just after a miraculous flying shot from the boundary thundered into the post. The Lions’ lack of method leaving defence left them helpless to the ruthless hunt of the home side who were almost toying with the opposition. The only thing heavier than the Dogs’ onslaught was the rain, forcing fans to huddle in behind the goals to find cover. It was more of the same in the second half as Subiaco failed to respond in any meaningful way, inside 50s blowing out to 57-36 in the home team’s favour. Inaccuracy with a slippery ball was the only barrier to a massacre; the day summed up as the Lions’ late call-up Richard Bartlett was smashed in the face by the ball, stopping a goal after it was soccered by a teammate. Hamish Free remained a domineering figure in the middle, claiming ascendancy with 60 hitouts in the ruck as well as winning five clearances. This book has so many pages. • Xbox was dying in revenue • Regulators put a 10 year deal on CoD • Microsoft had to give away the streaming • Spencer himself only offered 3 yrs initially And most importantly • Again, Xbox was dying in revenue Xbox have the benefit of their actual financial situation giving regulators and courts the impression they release games everywhere, what they actually do. But for reasons they can’t be proven guilty of anything in court. I’m not judging, it’s just what it is. IF the Series generation would have developed differently and was much more successful, I don’t hesitate any second to believe in what Spencer had originally planned to do: • Make everything Xbox exclusive • We today know that Spencer had also approached *****, From Software, CD Project, Nintendo, and even Valve was on their list of buyouts. MS are playing a card here everyone knows why they are doing it. Putting Doom “everywhere”, which even was it already before it got bought, ain’t a MS thing. It would had hurt them in many ways if they’d put it exclusively to Xbox. But, no matter what – it is what it is. Xbox bought themselves back into the game. And I think many people just don’t have very fond feelings towards this behaviour, wether on corporate nor private levels. Let’s see how they’ll run with it. 21. Lucas magic consigns Penrith to last on ladder Lucas magic consigns Penrith to last on ladder Dylan Lucas’ hat-trick has powered Newcastle to a vital 25-6 defeat of four-time reigning premiers Penrith, who slumped back to the bottom of the NRL ladder in Bathurst. As injuries and State of Origin absences depleted both sides, Lucas showed his credentials as a future NSW player, helping the struggling Knights ease pressure on coach Adam O’Brien with an improved attacking performance. Fletcher Sharpe excelled replacing Queensland’s Kalyn Ponga at fullback, scoring the Knights’ first try at close range to trigger a 24-0 first-half skirmish. Sharpe finished with a staggering 18 tackle busts and four line breaks to go with a game-high 272 metres and was the Knights’ best in a more even second half on Saturday night. Penrith’s five Origin absences notwithstanding, O’Brien may have found the solution to his long-running halves problem as five-eighth Tyson Gamble laid on all three of Lucas’ tries. Two came from beautiful flat ****** in back-to-back sets before Gamble put boot to ball and helped the second-rower make it a four-score game after 25 minutes. Lucas could’ve had a fourth try in the shadows of halftime had he not spilt the ball over the tryline with Daine Laurie covering in defence. Adam Elliott tore a bicep in the first half as the only sour note for Newcastle. The loss laid bare the mighty task ahead of the Panthers to salvage an already dire campaign in the always-testing Origin *******. The Panthers mercifully have byes before the final two Origin games but may need to rest players after Origin II given a trip to Auckland three days later. Goal-line defence was again a major issue for Penrith in the first half, with back-up halfback Brad Schneider targeted by Lucas ahead of his first two tries. The Panthers are now one point adrift at the bottom of the ladder and could lose prop Liam Henry to suspension for a crusher tackle on Sharpe. Henry went to the sin bin for the shot in the first half, putting the Knights in position for their fourth try. Highly-touted forward Harrison Hassett cut through for a try on debut in the second half. But that was good as things got for Penrith as former Panther Jack Cogger put the cherry on top with a field goal as the last five minutes approached. Newcastle debutant Paul Bryan dislocated his shoulder in his first minute but played on after having it popped back in. Antino destroys classy Doomben Cup field in race-record time Antino destroys classy Doomben Cup field in race-record time Antino continued his imperious vein of form in the Group 1 $1 million XXXX Doomben Cup (2000m), annihilating his rivals in a four-length romp. The last into stride, Antino ($3f TABtouch) settled third from the back as invariable pace-maker Pride Of Jenni ($5) adopted her customary role. Beyond halfway, Pride Of Jenni had opened up by three lengths on Linderman ($10), who in turn held a similar margin over the chasing pack. Past the 800m, Blake Shinn hooked Antino to the outside to begin his trademark long run and the six-year-old rapidly began to loop the field, making up ground hand over fist. Despite being four wide, Shinn had a vice-like grip of Antino as he moved past Pride Of Jenni at the 400m like she was stood still. With Shinn getting stuck-in up the straight, the son of Redwood effortlessly increased his margin with Fawkner Park and Kovalica toiling away to fill the remote placegetter positions. Gollan, a Toowoomba boy, has won multiple Group 1s and 11 straight Brisbane training premierships but said this horse was a different breed. “This is a new beast in my career,” he said. “This has been the best horse I have trained . After winning the Toorak Handicap last year, we have all just gotten better as a team. “Antino has gone to another level, what we have seen today is pretty special. “It was a pretty good Doomben Cup field and now we will set our sights on the Cox Plate in the spring. “His style of racing will suit a Cox Plate where you can build and build into it. “Sometimes he doesn’t break out of the barriers well, but Blake just lets him get into his stride and he knows when it is time to go. “I just said to Blake today I couldn’t get him any better and he will do the job for you. “That’s as good a win as I’ve been involved in.” Pride Of Jenni’s trainer and record-breaking master Ciaron Maher summed up the performance in a simple quote: “That was serious, wasn’t it?” A Brisbane Racing Club promotion meant that free beer was enjoyed by patrons at the meeting thanks to Antino’s win.
