  6. A place in four pictures: Mundaring Weir A place in four pictures: Mundaring Weir I always enjoy a drive or ride through the Perth Hills and one of my favourite places is the iconic Mundaring Weir. I love it when I catch sight of it as I round the last bend after driving along Mundaring Weir Road from Kalamunda. Not only is it one of the world’s greatest engineering projects — it is also a thing of beauty. Camera IconIn this shot I have kept the composition nice and clean. With the rule of thirds grid enabled on my camera’s viewfinder as a guide, I place the valve tower along the right hand vertical line to create a pleasant composition. The person by the valve tower helps to add a sense of scale. The pic was taken with my Sony A7III and a 24-240mm zoom at 110mm. The camera settings were: ISO 200, 1/320 sec shutter speed, and f/11 aperture. Credit: Mogens Johansen/The West *********** Snapping four pictures from this place is easy because it looks great from so many angles. So, for something a little different, I decided to capture it in ****** and white because I can, and because I think it suits the 1903 structure better. I like ****** and white photography because forces you to focus more on light and shadow, contrast, texture, and composition, as these elements are even more crucial for creating visually appealing and impactful images in ****** and white. Most cameras and phones have a ****** and white or monochrome mode you can use as you take the shots but you can also shoot in colour and convert to ****** and white after. Camera IconIn this shot I have framed Mundaring Weir and the iconic valve tower to create a natural vignette and to show that is in the middle of the forest. It is shot using my Sony A7III and a 24-240mm zoom at 80mm. The camera settings were ISO 200, 1/320 sec shutterspeed and an f/11 aperture. Credit: Mogens Johansen/The West ***********Camera IconThe spillway at Mundaring Weir looks particularly good in ****** and White. I like the symmetry of the spillway gates, the shadows and the aged concrete on the spillway. It is taken with my Sony A7III and a 24-240mm zoom at 240mm. The camera settings were ISO 200, 1/320 sec shutterspeed and an f/11 aperture to keep eveything in focus. Credit: Mogens Johansen/The West ***********Camera IconThe beautiful valve tower at Mundaring Weir makes an excellent subject on its own or as an addition pic in a series. I have zoomed in close to show the detail in the tower and keep the composition clean. It is shot with my Sony A7III and a 24-240mm zoom at 2400mm. The camera settings were: ISO 200, 1/250 sec shutter speed, and f/11 aperture. Credit: Mogens Johansen/The West AustralianTIPS FOR CREATING A PHOTO STORY Once you’re at your chosen location, put your photographer’s hat on and start looking for pictures. Set the scene: Look for a nice establishing shot that shows where you are. Keep it simple: Identify a key element in the shot and use composition techniques like leading lines, frames or rule of thirds to draw attention to it. Simple, easy-to-understand pictures are always best. Keep it clean: Eliminate unsightly elements in the frame by changing your point of view or focal length. Mix it up: A mix of wide and deep pictures or a close-up or detail shot in a series can add some variety. Pick your time: When we travel, we aren’t always at a location at the best time for photography. The soft light and long shadows around sunrise and sunset are always nice, so if you can, time it so you are there for the “golden hours” to really make your pictures pop. Once you’re home: Edit your pictures hard. Quality beats quantity. If you have taken lots of photos at a place, you may end up with several sets. Group them together like chapters in a book. Camera IconThis detail pic of the pipelines at the base of the weir makes a perfect detail shot to accompany the others. 7. This Stunning Beach Is the No. 1 ‘Bacteria Hot Spot’ in the U.S.—What Travelers Should Know This Stunning Beach Is the No. 1 ‘Bacteria Hot Spot’ in the U.S.—What Travelers Should Know Key Takeaway A new report from Surfrider Foundation ranks the U.S. beaches that are the biggest bacteria hot spots. A popular beach in Hawaii was found to be No. 1, with a high bacteria rate of 92 percent. Beach season is coming, but some of the most beautiful beaches in the U.S. might be hiding an invisible menace—and might be dangerous for your health. Surfrider Foundation recently released its 2024 Clean Water Report, which ranks the beaches in America that are bacteria hot spots to help raise awareness of water quality issues that affect public health. The No. 1 “bacteria hot spot” in the report is the beach of Kahalu’u in Oahu, Hawaii, with a 92 percent high bacteria rate. That rate means that 92 percent of the samples taken at Kahalu’u beach failed to meet the state health standard for recreational waters, the report states. A close second is Waikomo Stream at Koloa Landing in Poipu, Hawaii, with a high bacteria rate of 90 percent. The top 10 beach bacteria hot spots include beaches on the East Coast, West Coast, and Puerto Rico, as well as Hawaii. All the beaches are important to local communities and can have negative effects on public health. Stormwater and agriculture, industrial, and sewage runoff all contribute to water contamination. This creates “a ********* of pollutants including road dust, oil, animal waste, fertilizers, and other chemicals,” the report states, as well as raw, untreated sewage in some instances. In 2024, the Blue Water Task Force (BWTF) had 60 labs processing more than 10,000 water samples from 604 sites to analyze the water quality. Additionally, the Surfrider Foundation used volunteers to test beaches that are not covered and monitor potential sources of pollution. A shocking 80 percent of the beaches and sites tested gave high bacteria results, exceeding state health standards. “Here at Surfrider, we believe everyone should have access to clean water to surf, swim, and play in. Improving coastal water quality has been one of our top priorities since the Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984,” the Surfrider Foundation website states. “Unfortunately, the President’s budget proposal for next year (FY2026) eliminates all funding for the EPA’s BEACH Act Grants program that funds beach water quality monitoring and public notification programs in 35 coastal states and territories—which could leave families completely blind to pollution issues at America’s beaches.” Surfrider has launched a petition to Congress to reject the proposal to cut EPA funding and support clean water programs that benefit public health. The Surfrider Foundation has volunteers at the 10 top spots to build awareness of the problems with pollution that contribute to the high bacteria content. Ideally, releasing the data will help raise awareness of the problem and fix the sources of pollution and bacteria. Hawaii has a wealth of iconic beaches, so it’s important to clean up the ones that ranked poorly for bacteria content and protect the natural beauty of the islands. 9. Adrian Newey says Aston Martin’s F1 ambitions may be hampered by ‘weak tools’ Adrian Newey says Aston Martin’s F1 ambitions may be hampered by ‘weak tools’ Two and a half months into his time with the team, Newey said: “There’s a lot of individually very, very good people. We just need to try to get them working together, perhaps in a slightly better organised way. “That’s simply a result of the roots of the team at Jordan, that became Force India, that became Racing Point, and was as such always a small but slightly over-performing team, to now in a very short space of time a very big team that the truth is has been underperforming this year.” Newey, who joins the team after an illustrious career with Williams, McLaren and Red Bull, said one of the factors he was looking forward to in Monaco was working for the first time at a live event with 2005 and 2006 world champion Fernando Alonso. “Fernando, he’s such a cool character,” Newey said. “He’s been an enemy for many years, along with Lewis (Hamilton), and I think I’ve said before that you can only work with so many drivers, but two drivers I always wanted that I felt I would enjoy working with, were Lewis and Fernando, and I couldn’t work with both, so at least I got one of them. “It’s only when you get to the racetrack that you really start to develop that relationship, so I’m looking forward to that developing a little bit this season, but particularly next season.” He added that he felt that Lance Stroll, the son of team owner Lawrence, “has an unfairly bad rap, on average”, adding: “Any driver who gets to Formula 1 is clearly very good, but I think Lance is much better than people who’ve been very poor.” Source link #Adrian #Newey #Aston #Martins #ambitions #hampered #weak #tools Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  10. Western NSW residents shake through 5.2 magnitude earthquake Western NSW residents shake through 5.2 magnitude earthquake An earthquake has shaken parts of western NSW in the early hours of Saturday morning, but some are reporting the event could be felt hours away from the epicentre. Geoscience Australia confirmed a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck just after 2.30am in a remote part of Orana region, about 160 kilometres southeast of Bourke. The initial quake was followed seven minutes later by a magnitude 4.2 aftershock and another magnitude 3.6 tremor was also felt around 5.30am. The shocks continued throughout the day with a magnitude 3.0 at 11.46am and magnitude 3.5 at 1.03pm. Camera IconGeoscience Australia confirmed a magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck in a remote part of Orana region, about 160km southeast of Bourke. Geoscience Australia Credit: Supplied Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Phil Cummins said any aftershocks felt in the NSW region is following a normal pattern. “As far as we can tell this is all part of a normal aftershock sequence and therefore expect the earthquakes to decrease in frequency and magnitude,” he said. The senior seismologist said a number of people in western NSW are feeling the effects of the shock. “It was widely felt, getting over 260 reports, ranging as far as Orange and Dubbo,” he said While Australia sits in the middle of a tectonic plate, meaning it is less likely to get an earthquake, the continent can still experience earthquakes. Local residents took to the Geoscience Australia Facebook page to discuss the impact of the earthquake. One person living in Forbes said they “felt my floor vibrate last night twice about 10 minutes apart, though there was something under my house.” A second person said “my dogs woke me up whining and my daughter was awake and felt the bed shake in Coonamble after a house rattle beforehand.” While another reported saying they “felt nothing in Narromine, slept straight through it.” A fourth person working in the mines also reported that they did not feel the shock. “Working underground at Peak Gold Mines Cobar last night l didn’t fill a thing or ground movements.” Any members of the public who feel the impact of an earthquake are encouraged to lodge a felt report at Geoscience Australia. 11. Ex-army chief says Ukraine cannot hope for ‘miracle’ to restore 1991 borders Ex-army chief says Ukraine cannot hope for ‘miracle’ to restore 1991 borders By Anastasiia Malenko KYIV (Reuters) -The former head of Ukraine’s armed forces has said Kyiv cannot hope for a miracle to happen and regain all the territory it has lost at war with Russia. Valery Zaluzhnyi said in a speech that Ukraine should not dream of restoring either its borders established with the 1991 collapse of Soviet rule or the frontiers just before Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. President Volodymr Zelenskiy wants the 1991 borders restored but acknowledges Ukraine cannot recapture all occupied land by force and that diplomacy and time will be needed. Russia occupied the Crimea peninsula in 2014 and annexed it in a move recognised by few countries. Its armed forces now control about a fifth of Ukrainian territory, including large parts of eastern Ukraine. “I hope that there are not people in this room who still hope for some kind of miracle or lucky sign that will bring peace to Ukraine, the borders of 1991 or 2022, and that there will be great happiness afterward,” Zaluzhnyi, who was a popular commander-in-chief of the armed forces for the first two years of the war, said in a speech at a forum in Kyiv on Thursday. “My personal opinion is that the enemy still has resources, forces and means to launch strikes on our territory and attempt specific offensive operations,” he said in the speech, which was published by the Ukrainska Pravda news outlet on Friday. Zaluzhnyi, who is 51, was replaced as top commander in February 2024 after months of reported disagreements between him and Zelenskiy. He is now Ukraine’s ambassador to London. There was no immediate comment by Zelenskiy’s office on Zaluzhnyi’s remarks. Zelenskiy and other public figures have long called for the eviction of Russian forces and a return to the 1991 borders, including Crimea. But as efforts over recent months have focused on launching talks to secure a ceasefire, public statements by Kyiv have been more moderate on the question of ceding territory. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko told the BBC last month that Ukraine may need to temporarily cede land as part of a peace deal with Russia. He said Zelenskiy might be forced to accept a “painful solution” to achieve peace although the Ukrainian people would never accept occupation by Russia. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY Zaluzhnyi said Russia had been waging a war of attrition for more than a year and, given Ukraine’s smaller forces and difficult economic circumstances, Kyiv’s only hope was to rely on advanced technology. “We can speak only about a high-tech war of survival, using a minimum of human resources, a minimum of economic means to achieve maximum benefit,” he said. “And in this situation, we need to understand that: Our financial and economic resources are limited; Our dependence on the help of our partners is absolutely obvious and this must be taken into account.” Opinion polls show Zaluzhnyi is still among the most popular public figures with Ukrainians. Polls also show Zelenskiy’s rating rising since his confrontation with U.S. President Donald Trump at a White House meeting in February. The European Union, in the absence of Russian agreement on a ceasefire, this week imposed new sanctions on Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin said discussions on a memorandum it proposes to draft with Ukraine would include the principles of a settlement and the timing and definitions of a possible ceasefire, including its timeframe. Marian Beattie, 18, from Portadown was last seen leaving a charity dance at Hadden’s Garage in Aughnacloy on 30 March 1973. She was observed leaving the premises with a young man just after 01:00 but five hours later her partially-clothed body was found at the bottom of a quarry between Aughnacloy and Ballygawley. Her brother Gerard Beattie said his family have never recovered. Gerard Beattie said his family never fully recovered following his sister’s ******* “Marian was a special person, she would have gone out of her way to help anyone out”, he said. He added: “She didn’t deserve what happened to her and we know there are people out there who have information about who was involved in her *******. “So we’re asking again for those people to please come forward because we just want justice and the truth for Marian.” This week police said they were reviewing the ******* and appealed to anyone with fresh information to come forward. PSNI Dt Insp Thompson said: “I appreciate this ******* took place over 50 years ago but we would like to talk to anyone who was at the dance at Hadden’s Garage on the night of Friday, 30th March 1973. “Marian went there with a girlfriend to listen to her brother’s band. Did you see who she was dancing with or speaking with? Did you see her leave the dance with a man? “Do you know who he was? Did you see her in the car park at the quarry any time after 1.15am on the Saturday morning? Dt Insp Thompson added: “Marian’s family deserve to know what happened to her that night. I am appealing to anyone who may be able to help us progress the investigation and bring some closure to the Beattie family to come forward and speak to Detectives in Legacy Investigation Branch.” A still image of BBC Archive from 1973 of the quarry where Marian Beattie’s body was found What happened to Marian Beattie? In late March 1973, Marian Beattie went to a charity dance at Hadden’s Garage on the outskirts of Aughnacloy with her best friend and brother. During the night she was seen dancing with a young man. She left with him after 01:00. Marian’s body was found in the early hours of the following day at the bottom of the nearby quarry, and the police opened a ******* investigation. More than 50 years later nobody has ever been charged with a ******* that police described at the time as a “vicious and cruel *******, with sadistic overtones”. PSNI As part of their latest appeal, police released a ****** and white still of the quarry in County Tyrone where Marian Beattie’s body was found ‘I was in complete shock’ Gerard Beattie said he can still remember when he heard about what happened to Marian. He said: “I was only 13 years old, I was out playing football and my dad called us into the house and next thing there was a priest there and he told us Marian was found dead in a quarry. “I was just in a complete and utter shock, it felt like the ground had just opened up, it just felt like a complete and utter disaster.” Gerard said despite the passage of time, his family will continue to campaign until they find out the truth. “It was devastating for our entire family, my mother was never the same and she died of a broken heart,” he said. “But we’ll never give up, if something happens me, my daughter will carry it on, we need to get answers for Marian.” Source link #murdered #sister #years Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  14. Untold History: The glorious trailblazing days of the Harley Scramble Untold History: The glorious trailblazing days of the Harley Scramble Bill Watson admires the beloved red 1960 Maico sitting in his garage workshop and summarises the secret of being a champion motocross rider. “Don’t follow where the sheep go,” he observes. It was simple really, he said. Make sure you don’t get bogged down and slowed down in the tyre tracks left by other riders. Choose your own line. It is advice the 96-year old has followed himself over many years. And it stood him in good stead over the course of his highly successful riding career. Mr Watson’s record includes twice being runner-up *********** Motocross Champion, WA State Motocross Champion six times and podium finishes in the blue-ribbon WA event, the Harley Scramble, including when it was run on the legendary Rope Works circuit in Mosman Park. And next month he will take part in a special event to celebrate the Scramble, considered the birth of *********** motocross nearly 100 years ago. John Steyntjes, a past rider and author of the *********** Motocross History website, wrote that Aubrey Melrose and Roy Charman had taken part in an emerging new sport called “scrambles” during their stay in England in 1927 and 1928. They came up with the concept of an event in Perth and convinced the Harley-Davidson Motor Cycle Club of the merits of the idea. Shortly after returning to Perth from overseas, Melrose and Gavin Casey rode their motorcycles to Mosman Park and mapped out a circuit wedged between Cottesloe and Leighton beaches and the Swan River around Buckland Hill. They called the circuit the “Rope Works Course” after the nearby rope factory. The original course ran on the peninsula between the ocean and river to what was known as Billy Goat Farm for a lunch stop, before looping back to Buckland Hill in the afternoon. The first Harley Scramble was held on Sunday, June 17, 1928. The circuit had been shortened to about 4km so most of the racing was visible from one vantage point, Mr Steyntjes wrote. Marked by arrows, the total distance was about 16km with the winner being “the rider who gets to the finish line the quickest without missing any of the course”. The first event was called the 1928 TT Scramble. But the reporter at The West *********** gave it the name The Harley Scramble (after the hosting club). The name stuck. More than 5000 people attended the first Harley Scramble. Riders took off two at a time at one minute intervals (this was gradually reduced to 10 seconds in the future) with the fastest riders at the rear of the field, Mr Steyntjes wrote. The circuit was mapped out in a natural valley of grass and sandy terrain with a high sandstone ridge along one side. “The track wound back and forth across the flats to up and down the steep cliffs (called slides) providing spectacular climbs and descents to a series of short straights along the opposite side of the valley that included a quarry section to add more variety to the circuit,” Mr Steyntjes wrote. He wrote that according to The West *********** “the course included 75 different bends, 25 hairpin turns, eight slides, seven sharp ascents and about 200 smaller bends”. “For the greater part, the track is only about a foot wide.” The event was so rough on the bikes that riders even took to storing spare wheels and chains around the track. “In the early years of the event, rope gangs were placed at the top of the highest hills, armed with ropes and grappling hooks, to haul stricken riders to the top if they lost momentum on the climbs and to avert blocking the riders behind them,” Mr Steyntjes wrote. This was no longer needed as the bikes became more powerful. Most bikes in the early years were Harley-Davidsons. Ken Vincent won the inaugural event in 1928 on his V-Twin Harley-Davidson four-stroke. The bikes were for many years street machines stripped down for the event. “Brakes were optional, but lights and mudguards and rear vision mirrors had to be removed before racing,” Mr Steyntjes wrote. The event went from strength to strength, regularly drawing crowds in the many thousands. Perhaps the high point of the Rope Works circuit came on July 3, 1955 when more than 20,000 people went to watch the combined Harley Scramble and *********** Motocross Championships. This was the era when Mr Watson rode in the big events. He was working in Kalgoorlie as a fitter and turner when he developed his love for bikes, and joined the Goldfields Motorcycle Club in 1947. And he was soon attracted by the prospect of riding in the Harley Scramble. Even getting to the start line could be a challenge, and he recalled how it could mean riding out of Kalgoorlie on a Friday night after finishing work, arriving early in the morning in Perth. Saturday would be to scout out the circuit and prepare the bike for competition. Then came racing on the Sunday. “The story was don’t follow the sheep,” he told The West ***********. “Where the ground gets chewed up you go somewhere else,” he said. After the event it might mean getting back on the bike to ride through the night back to Kalgoorlie — still with no lights on his racing machine. “I had an army kitbag that would sit between my arms with all the gear in it and on the handlebars,” he said. “Get home about 3.30 in the morning, have a shower and get a clean pair of overalls on so you can go to work on Monday,” he said. Mr Watson rode the Harley Scramble six times. Keeping fit helped a rider make it to the finish of the testing event, he said. It has clearly paid dividends. He has continued riding, and in recent years took part in “Super 70s” events. “I would race in with the 70-year-old kids,” Mr Watson said. “I won that a few times and got some places.” His most recent event was just last year at Wandering. “If you relax and let the bike do the work it doesn’t wear you out,” he said. “And you pick the smooth paths. I always had a reputation for having the hot mix people out there making a track for me to ride on.” Over time urban development and the Harley Scramble at the Rope Works became incompatible. The end for the circuit came in April 1964 when the Mosman Park council called time on the Rope Works Course. The event was then run in Rockingham, Narrogin and then Mount Brown in York. There the Harley Scramble continued to be one of WA’s premier motocross events through to 1978. The event was then held at Belmont and then on to Gidgegannup and in 2028, it will be 100 years since it was established. June 2025 will mark the 70th anniversary of the combined Harley Scramble/1955 *********** Motocross Championships. The milestone will be celebrated on June 13 and 14 with the screening at Camelot Arts Club in Mosman Park of a documentary about the Harley Scramble produced by Mr Steyntjes: Harley Scramble: The Birth of *********** Motocross. The event will pay tribute to the late Peter Nicol, a five-time Harley Scramble winner. Some champion riders including Mr Watson will take part in a panel discussion and there will be a vintage bike display. For details, visit camelotartsclub.com/whats-on. 15. Harvard Professor Reveals Stunning Advice He Gave Student Amid Trump Battle Harvard Professor Reveals Stunning Advice He Gave Student Amid Trump Battle A Harvard University professor surprised MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace on Friday after he spilled on what he told a student considering graduate studies at the Ivy League institution as it tries to fend off attacks by the Trump administration. ″‘Well, you should look overseas,’ I never thought I’d say that,” said Dr. Jeremy Faust, an assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “Wow,” Wallace replied. “But I did say those words that they should consider that,” Faust continued. “Now, I’m not saying that everyone should but I never even thought I would consider telling somebody to do that but that’s how many question marks we have.” Faust’s remarks arrive on the same day that a federal judge blocked the Trump administration’s plan to bar enrollment of foreign students. The administration’s move marked an escalation in its ongoing battle with Harvard, which has also seen President Donald Trump propose stripping the university of its tax-exempt status. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Bloomberg Television on Friday that the administration is “moving forward” with such efforts. Last month, Harvard refused to bend the knee to Trump’s funding demands — made under the pretexts of combatting antisemitism, transgender rights along with diversity, equity and inclusion efforts. This led to the administration freezing billions in federal funding at Harvard, sparking fears over how the move would affect ongoing research and sparking a lawsuit from the university. Earlier in the MSNBC program, Faust stressed the importance of the international science community along with the value of scientific research by referring to biochemist Katalin Karikó, who left her native Hungary and came to the U.S. where she collaborated with immunologist Drew Weissman. 17. Reds seek ‘focus’ to prove early Super form no Flook Reds seek ‘focus’ to prove early Super form no Flook Josh Flook’s pending return and Harry Wilson’s strong injury comeback have sweetened the taste of another gutting Queensland Reds loss. The hosts were beaten 31-27 by the Hurricanes at Suncorp Stadium on Friday, some moments of brilliance not enough in a 10th-straight defeat to the Wellington side since 2013. It meant they jumped the Reds into fourth spot with one Super Rugby Pacific round remaining, Les Kiss’s side to host Fijian Drua in Brisbane next Saturday. They could still sneak back into fourth place with a win and Hurricanes loss next week, with that spot crucial in a new six-team finals format that means the highest-ranked loser still progresses to the final four. Incumbent Wallabies captain Wilson played 80 minutes in his return from a fractured arm, charging hard and defending stoutly in positive signs ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour that begins next month. The Reds have slid from first spot, with a 2-4 record since Wilson’s injury in a loss to the Chiefs. They’ll face either the Crusaders, ACT Brumbies or the Chiefs in the first week of finals, depending on final-round results. Test centre Flook should feature, the 23-year-old potentially back to face the Drua next week after a hamstring injury suffered in the third round. Influential backrower Seru Uru could join him, but Matt Faessler and Lukhan Salakaia-Loto won’t despite the pair running well in their rehabilitation sessions last week. Kiss also confirmed fellow backrower and one-time Test captain Liam Wright had surgery on his troublesome shoulder that’s again plagued him this season. Flook’s blend of toughness and silky skill would be a timely addition but he could find it hard to crack the side, given the emergence of Dre Pakeho alongside Hunter Paisami – and the versatile Filipo Daugunu – this season. The Reds haven’t beaten any of the sides in the top four this year, captain Tate McDermott again ruing costly errors with the game on the line on Friday. Knock-ons from Wilson and Paisami when they led by one point with 15 minutes remaining followed two late Hurricanes tries in the first half that blew the game open. Friday’s defeat followed a 10-point loss to the Brumbies in which the Reds dominated field position and possession but couldn’t find the knock-out blow. “Heaps of positives but there is a 10-minute ******* that’s plagued us two weeks in a row now, just before halftime that really hurts us,” McDermott said. “It comes down to a lack of focus. It’s not one thing. Missing tackles, out of position in the back-field, drop ****** …. that’s where the frustration comes from. “We showed a huge amount of fight but … we couldn’t ice it and to their credit they got the ball back and they scored.” Source link #Reds #seek #focus #prove #early #Super #form #Flook Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. Should you open a savings account or CD before the Fed’s next meeting? Should you open a savings account or CD before the Fed’s next meeting? If you’re considering opening a new savings account or certificate of deposit (CD), knowing how the Fed’s decisions impact your interest earnings over time is key to making an informed decision about where to put your money. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is set to hold its next meeting on June 17-18, 2025. During this time, committee members will determine whether to raise, maintain, or lower the federal funds rate. These rate decisions are key indicators of the health of the economy and, ultimately, trickle down to affect deposit accounts. Here’s a closer look at how you can take advantage of today’s CD and savings rates in light of the Fed’s policy decisions. This embedded content is not available in your region. The federal funds rate is the target interest rate set by the Federal Reserve. It determines the rate that banks charge one another to borrow funds overnight in order to meet reserve requirements. The federal funds rate is expressed as a range, which is currently 4.25%–4.50%. Banks negotiate a specific rate between each other within that range. The Fed uses the funds rate as a tool to quell inflation. When inflation is high, the Fed raises its target rate to make borrowing money more expensive, which discourages consumer spending and helps bring everyday costs down. When the economy needs a boost, the Fed might initiate a series of rate cuts to encourage more spending and borrowing. Read more: A look at the federal funds rate over the past 50 years: How has it changed? Changes to the federal funds rate have major implications for financial institutions and the economy at large. But these decisions also affect your bottom line. Although the Fed’s rate doesn’t directly impact the interest rates set by individual banks for consumer deposit accounts and loans, they are closely correlated. When the Fed raises its rate, for example, interest rates on deposit products such as high-yield savings accounts and CDs also tend to go up. And when it lowers its rate, deposit interest rates generally fall. The Fed will meet again on June 17-18 and decide whether or not to adjust the federal funds rate. (In its last meeting, the committee maintained the target range for the federal funds rate at 4.25–4.50%.) The Fed has maintained this target range since its last rate cut in December 2024. As economic activity continues to expand at a solid pace, many wonder whether the Fed will cut its target rate this year. In its last meeting, the committee released the following statement: “In considering the extent and timing of additional adjustments to the target range for the federal funds rate, the Committee will carefully assess incoming data, the evolving outlook, and the balance of risks. The Committee will continue reducing its holdings of Treasury securities and agency debt and agency mortgage‑backed securities. The Committee is strongly committed to supporting maximum employment and returning inflation to its 2 percent objective.” It’s expected that the Fed will once again hold its target rate steady in its next meeting. That means there likely won’t be any major movements to interest rates for the time being. That said, we can’t know for sure what will happen. So, while you wait for the Fed’s official announcement about how rates will change (or not), it could be a good time to evaluate your current savings account or consider opening a new account. Should the Fed decide to keep rates the same, it won’t have a direct impact on your savings and CD rates, which means now is as good a time as any to open an account and take advantage of historically high interest rates. As it stands, the best savings and CD accounts are paying around 4% and up. However, if the Fed does decide to lower rates, now might be your last chance to lock in today’s competitive rates with a CD. This embedded content is not available in your region. Ultimately, waiting until the Fed’s next announcement before opening a new deposit account won’t have a significant impact on your potential earnings. Now is as good of a time as any to compare the current rates on your existing accounts and see if you could be earning more elsewhere. For example, say your existing savings account earns 0.42%, the national average for traditional savings accounts. If you deposited $10,000, you’d earn a total of $42 in interest over one year. However, some of the top high-yield savings accounts offer around 4%. If you deposited $10,000 at that rate, you’d earn $400 in interest over one year. That means you could be missing out on significant earning potential by leaving your money in a low-interest account. Regardless of how the Fed adjusts the federal funds rate, it pays to reevaluate your current accounts and ensure you’re earning the best rate possible. Kim Kardashian issues statement after Paris robbery guilty verdict Kim Kardashian issues statement after Paris robbery guilty verdict Kim Kardashian “will never forget what happened” to her during the Paris robbery. After eight people were found guilty by a Paris court of crimes connected to the gunpoint robbery of Kardashian, 44, in 2016, she said she is “deeply grateful to the French authorities for pursuing justice in this case”. Kardashian added in a statement to PEOPLE: “The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family. While I’ll never forget what happened, I believe in the power of growth and accountability and pray for healing for all. I remain committed to advocating for justice, and promoting a fair legal system.” Her attorneys Michael Rhodes, Léonor Hennerick and Jonathan Mattou added in their own statement that Kardashian “appreciates the Court’s decision and once again thanks the French authorities for treating her with great respect throughout the process”. They went on: “It has been a long journey from that terrible night back in 2016 to her standing courageously in a historic Paris courtroom to confront these criminals. “She looks forward to putting this tragic episode behind her, as she continues working to improve the criminal justice system on behalf of victims, the innocent, and the incarcerated seeking to redeem themselves.” The eight suspects who were found guilty will all walk free due to the fact that they have served time previously. According to CNN, Judge David De Pas called the sentences “quite lenient”. De Pas said: “They were thought of a long way away from this serious event, which impacted the civil parties. 22. What is ‘Ozempic Teeth’? The Truth About the Rapid Weight Loss Treatment’s ‘Damaging’ Side Effects What is ‘Ozempic Teeth’? The Truth About the Rapid Weight Loss Treatment’s ‘Damaging’ Side Effects With weight loss drug advertisements infiltrating aspects of everyday life from scrolling on social media to in-person shopping, it’s become quite clear just how mainstream these medications are now. They may not be sold next to standard supplements like magnesium and creatine in stores, but they’re practically being put on the same shelf by the upper echelons of Hollywood. Ozempic, specifically, has been on the rise in the last few years with several celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey and Sharon Osbourne openly admitting to taking the GLP-1 drug, originally designed to treat type-2 diabetes, to help them lose weight. As of 2024, approximately 5.7 million people are doing the same, according to a study by KFF Health Track. Yet, the short-term benefits of this injectable drug are currently being outweighed by a very serious potential side effect that has become so common that it has earned a nickname online: Ozempic teeth. More from WWD What is Ozempic Teeth? Ozempic teeth refers to the deterioration of oral health seen within prescription semaglutide users. Videos from certified dentists and Ozempic users posted on TikTok and Instagram suggest issues with oral health – such as tooth decay, bad breath and bleeding or irritated gums – may be a result of symptoms of the drug such as dry mouth, acid reflux and vomiting. How Symptoms of Ozempic May Lead to Dental Issues According to Dr. Sandip Sachar, a Manhattan-based dentist, there is no scientific evidence to suggest Ozempic can lead to oral health complications, however, people taking GLP-1 medications tend to drink less water, which has subsequently led to the presence of dry mouth. “One of the ways that GLP-1 medications work is by reducing or slowing the emptying of the GI (gastrointestinal) contents,” she told WWD. “This is more prevalent in emptying of foods that are consumed but also can affect liquids that are consumed. Slowing of GI emptying may prevent hunger but also may prevent thirst.” When a person experiences dry mouth, it means there’s less protective saliva being produced to help “neutralize acidic foods and drinks, wash away food debris and decreased plaque buildup,” Sachar explained. “Bacteria in plaque as well as acidic foods and drinks can erode tooth enamel leading to tooth decay and more severe problems down the road,” she said. “In addition to tooth decay, other symptoms include increased tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, enamel erosion, tooth fractures, receding gums, generalized oral discomfort and acid reflux.” Meghan Garcia-Webb, a board-certified obesity medicine doctor, listed acid reflux and vomiting as other potential side effects of GLP-1 medications that could cause oral health issues. “That can be very damaging to the teeth,” she said. “If these become chronic problems, then, of course, they can be more damaging to the teeth, throat and esophagus,” Garcia-Web noted. How Poor Oral Health Can Be Prevented This is all not to say dental and oral hygiene issues are guaranteed with weight loss treatment. In fact, the prescribing doctor can help catch these symptoms before they make their way to the mouth. Garcia-Webb said decreasing a patient’s dose, switching them to a different medication or starting them on an additional one to “help with nausea or excess stomach acid” can help manage the side effects. Additional measures to avoid oral complications should also be taken, according to Sachar. “I recommend that they maintain good oral hygiene with twice a day brushing with a fluoride toothpaste, and flossing every day. They should consume enough water to stay hydrated and prevent dry mouth,” she said. She also suggested chewing sugar-free gum to increase saliva production and actively avoiding acidic or sugary drinks, as well as sticky foods and candy. For anyone already exhibiting signs of Ozempic teeth, Sachar said frequent dental cleanings are necessary. Best of WWD Sign up for WWD’s Newsletter. 24. ‘I want a child but I’m scared to come off the pill’ ‘I want a child but I’m scared to come off the pill’ Elin Alexander BBC Wales News BBC Marianne Barry, 29, believes there is a lack of understanding about PMDD If 29-year-old Marianne Barry doesn’t take the contraceptive pill each day, she could have symptoms of severe anxiety or even suicidal thoughts. Marianne has pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), a condition which affects as many as 8% of women, but for which the average wait time for a diagnosis is around 12 years. Contraception remains the primary course of treatment for women living with PMDD, but for women who wish to become pregnant this poses a dilemma. “I want to have a child, but I also want to be sane,” said Marianne. The Welsh government said it was “determined to improve the diagnosis, treatment and awareness of conditions affecting women”, including PMDD. Marianne, a teaching assistant from Cardiff, spent eight years going back and forth to her GP before seeking a private diagnosis two years ago, when her symptoms became overwhelming. “I would wake up in the morning and I could feel this thing bubbling up inside of me,” she said. “It was like my brain was almost hot with feelings of anger, being upset, anxiety – the anxiety was just insane.” She began to realise that her symptoms coincided with her menstrual cycle, and started to make a record of them. “I could feel it and I’d go ‘OK, well I know my *******’s coming.'” Before she was prescribed the contraceptive pill, Marianne’s symptoms would re-appear each month, which she said left her in a constant cycle of anxiety. “You almost feel like you’ve made it up because you have this really bad low and then everything seems to start getting better again as you’re coming towards that ovulation *******.” “I want to have a child, but I also want to be sane.” What is PMDD? According to the NHS, symptoms of PMDD are “similar to PMS, but are much more intense and can have a much greater negative impact on your everyday life”. Symptoms can include: Headaches and joint and muscle painOvereating and problems sleepingFeeling very anxious, angry, depressed or suicidal. The exact cause of PMDD is not fully understood, but the average wait time for a diagnosis is around 12 years in Wales. Dr Llinos Roberts, a GP, believes this is due to a lack of research. “The treatment options are somewhat limited and I think this reflects the lack of research historically that’s gone into health issues particularly affecting women,” said Dr Roberts. “The options we have are contraception, which helps reduce the symptoms of PMDD. Also you’ve got the options of treating the actual symptoms with CBT and antidepressants.” Dr Llinos Roberts says that GPs should consider learning more about PMDD to improve their understanding of the condition For Marianne, who wants children in the future, the idea of coming off her medication and her symptoms potentially returning is too daunting for her. “There’s no certainty that you’re going to get pregnant, you don’t know how long it’s going to take. So, I want to have a child but I also want to be sane,” she said. “I’m too scared to come off my pill now.” Corinne has opted for antidepressants to treat her PMDD symptoms Corinne Sinclair, 30, from Cardiff, was diagnosed with PMDD two months ago and is currently trying for a baby. Antidepressants are her only treatment option but she has been told by doctors that if she gets pregnant, she will have to think about coming off those too. “I think more research could be done into PMDD to give women more options that isn’t just taking the contraceptive pill,” said Corrine. “It’s a bit of a cop-out really and I feel they tend to do that with a lot of women’s issues.” Corinne also has endometriosis, which can make conceiving a child more difficult. She said the worry of this, and the potential return of her PMDD symptoms – which include dark thoughts and struggling to find the motivation to get out of bed – caused her a lot of stress. “When you’re trying for a baby, it’s supposed to be an exciting and happy time and it is, and I’m still hopeful and looking forward to it, but there is that niggly worry at the back of your head,” she said. “After having the baby, am I going to suffer with my mental health? “During pregnancy, am I going to be really unwell mentally?” No silver bullet Dr Roberts said PMDD could be difficult to diagnose as it was often mistaken for depression or anxiety. She advised women with suspected PMDD to keep a detailed diary of their symptoms, to keep track of when they occur and subside, and to provide that evidence to their GP. She said there was no silver bullet for women with PMDD who wanted to have children. “This can be very challenging for women who want to conceive but know that if they come off their contraception that’s likely to exacerbate their PMDD symptoms,” she said. “If they’re somebody who  has significant PMDD symptoms, it’s a matter of balancing the pros and cons of coming off contraception.” The Welsh government said its Women’s Health Plan for Wales outlined how it was “determined to improve the diagnosis, treatment and awareness of conditions affecting women”. “Pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is included as part of the menstrual health priority area within the plan,” a spokesperson said. “Funding of £3m will be used to deliver the actions in the plan.” Additional reporting by Dani Thomas. 25. ‘I was about to cry’: Emotional scenes before, during and after Joash Papalii’s first game in the NRL ‘I was about to cry’: Emotional scenes before, during and after Joash Papalii’s first game in the NRL Joash Papalii may have had his eyes closed when he scored a try on debut on Friday night, but they were wide open as he embraced family and took photos with everyone in the CommBank Stadium sheds as they celebrated a moment that he’d been dreaming about since he was a young kid supporting the blue and golds. There were emotional scenes after the game as friends and family held up posters as Papalii posed with anyone and everyone in the home dressing room, with pride replacing the sheer hysteria they showed when he ran out for the first time two hours earlier. His dad was hugging senior players in the sheds while everyone soaked up the atmosphere, before the 20-year-old was whisked away from the deafening celebrations to a quiet place where he smiled for eight minutes straight in his first proper interview. It was a much more relaxed feeling compared to Monday when he was ushered into Jason Ryles’ office after training with no idea what was about to unfold. Camera IconThere were emotional scenes as Joash Papalii made his debut for the Eels on Friday night. Parramatta Eels Credit: Supplied “I was walking in the physio room and he goes ‘Joash’ loud as. ‘Come here, I need to talk to you in my office’, so I ran there straight away,” the youngster explained. “Nathan Brown then asked me if I was in trouble and I was nervous. He told me to sit down and I was shaking my legs. “He asked me how it was going with my performance. He said I was killing it and then told me straight that I would be debuting this week. “When he told me, in my mind I was saying ‘are you joking?’ “I was about to cry but I held my tears. I didn’t expect it this week, but I had to be ready for anything.” Camera IconJoash Papalii was the happiest man at CommBank Stadium. Parramatta Eels Credit: Supplied Papalii spent a couple of years in the Canterbury system but made the move to Parramatta this season where he’s starred in reserve grade. But after being so close a number of times as 18th man, Papalii finally earned his shot after being picked on the bench for the showdown with the Sea Eagles. The message from Ryles was simple, with the rookie told to be ready for anything. So when Will Penisini came off inside the opening two minutes following a head knock, the lifelong Eels fan hopped off the bench and was straight into the action without any time to worry about what might happen. He was strong from the outset, with Papalii living out a childhood dream in the 24th minute when he finished off a big break up the middle to score in the right corner. It’s a moment he’ll never forget, but it’s one he’ll have to watch again and again given his eyes were closed as he grounded the ball for what should be the first of many NRL tries. “I did not expect it,” he said. “I just told myself, just keep moving, just push and then when I saw Dylan Walker break the line, I was like, ‘he’s breaking’. I had to get on my bike. “And then when I saw Dean Hawkins, he got tackled, and then he looked at me and he just chucked it (the ball). “I was like oh, I’ve got to grab it. And I was about to go in the corner, and then I was like, I’ve got to come back in, and then I threw the ******, and I was like, am I actually over the line? “And when I opened my eyes I was like, wow, I actually got it. And I did not expect it. “I was so happy. And when I heard the crowd it was so loud. I’ve always dreamed about this – watching it as the 18th man, experiencing the boys playing, it’s all I ever wanted to do.” Papalii isn’t sure if there were 150, 250 or 300 people who were there to support him on Friday, with friends and family travelling from as far as Melbourne to cheer him on. He was a ball of energy on and off the field, with the nephew of Raiders legend Josh Papalii cracking jokes and exuding pure joy from the moment he ran on until the recorders were switched off at the end of the interview, with the rookie just glad his parents were there after supporting him throughout his journey. “All I ever wanted to do was to give back to them for all the sacrifices they’ve given me throughout my life,” he said. “I just wanted to make them proud.” Source link #cry #Emotional #scenes #Joash #Papaliis #game #NRL Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
