NSW Police arrest 30-year-old man after alleged car pursuit at Nambucca Heads NSW Police arrest 30-year-old man after alleged car pursuit at Nambucca Heads NSW Police have arrested a 30-year old man without incident and taken him to Kempsey Police station following an alleged active pursuit and stand-off. Police say the man discharged shots towards a police officer in the early hours of Saturday morning. The saga began after the 30-year-old allegedly failed to stop his Subaru Impreza on the Giinagay Way, Valla, north of Nambucca Heads. Police initially pursued the vehicle before terminating the attempt to stop the man on the back of safety concerns, the police claimed in a statement on Saturday. But the Police said they continued to patrol the area and then found the vehicle again turning onto Jellico Street Macksville, where they re-engaged the suspect. NewsWire/ Gaye Gerard Credit: News Corp Australia The driver eventually crashed the car and became bogged, the police said. He then allegedly fled the scene on foot and hid under a nearby house. After establishing a perimeter, NSW Police say the man “discharged a number of shots” towards officers. The residents in the house were evacuated and specialist police were sent in to negotiate with the man. Following negotiations, the 30-year-old man was arrested about 9am without incident. A crime scene has been established as inquiries continue. Used Cybertruck prices plunging to ‘insane’ levels, report says Used Cybertruck prices plunging to ‘insane’ levels, report says Not even two years since its launch, the value of Cybertrucks has dropped more than a third for owners over the original purchase price, adding to evidence that the car has been a commercial flop. Scott Brauer/ZUMA Press Wire/dpa Tesla’s much-hyped Cybertruck is turning into a financial disaster for owners as prices drop sharply for second-hand examples on the US used car market, US electric transport website Electrek reports. After a year of refusing trade-ins, the EV giant has begun offering deals on used Cybertrucks, but owners are aghast then they hear how little money is on the table. Tesla is offering just $65,000 for a $100,000 electric truck bought in 2024 with 10,000 kilometres (6,000 miles) on the odometer. This was according to an owner who shared the information with the Cybertruck Owners Club, the website said. Another buyer has covered 51,499 kilometres (32,000 miles) in his Cybertruck and received an offer of $60,500. This equates to a loss of 39.5% over the purchase price. The pick-up already faced criticism for its futuristic stainless-steel-clad body, which some owners say is prone to rust spots. The trucks have also been recalled for minor problems several times and Tesla has dropped plans to offer a useful range extender. Meanwhile Tesla owners have become worried about attracting vandalism after a string of cars in several countries were damaged and set on fire in protest against Tesla boss Elon Musk’s support for far-right politics, massive accumulated wealth and sharing of misinformation. Electrek, which first reported the trade-in offers, described the devaluation as “insane” and said the Cybertruck has been “a commercial flop”. The low trade-in value appeared to reflect a glut in supply of the vehicle, with Tesla’s Cybertruck inventory reportedly reaching a record high of 10,000 units this month. Tesla was reportedly having to offer heavy discounts to shift them. At one point, Tesla boasted having over one million reservations for the electric pick-up truck, but only about 40,000 people ended up converting their reservations into orders, said the report. Data from Tesla-info.com, which tracks listings in the US, suggests Tesla has unsold Cybertrucks worth around 800 million dollars. The Cybertruck was first revealed in 2021 but production only began in November 2023, with customer deliveries following later that month. Urgent mental health centres to open across England Urgent mental health centres to open across England Specialist mental health crisis centres will be opened across England over the next decade in a bid to reduce crowding in accident and emergency departments (A&E), the NHS has confirmed. Ten hospital trusts have been piloting new assessment centres to deal with people experiencing a mental health crisis. The aim is to get these patients to appropriate care in a calm environment, avoiding long waits in A&E. NHS England said the new units would reduce overcrowding in hospitals and relieve pressure on emergency services, including the police. But Andy Bell, the CEO of the Centre for Mental Health, said any new provision needed to be properly funded. The scheme is expected to be expanded nationally to “dozens of locations”, the government said, as part of its ten-year NHS plan. These clinics will be open to walk-in patients as well as those referred by GPs and police, with specialist staff present to treat people in acute mental distress. Speaking to the Times newspaper, NHS England chief Sir Jim Mackey hailed the “pioneering new model of care”, where people can “get the right support in the right setting”. “As well as relieving pressure on our busy A&Es, mental health crisis assessment centres can speed up access to appropriate care, offering people the help they need much sooner so they can stay out of hospital.” Andy Bell told BBC Breakfast he was sceptical of the scheme because it was untested. He said it was impossible to separate out physical and mental health problems so simply, calling for separate facilities to be put in place “carefully”. “We need to robustly test the model at every stage before we even think about rolling it out nationally,” Mr Bell added. Calling for better funding of NHS mental health services, he noted the share of health spending on mental health treatment had gone down last year and was set to do so again. A recent study of emergency care in England found that the number of people waiting 12 hours or more in A&E after a decision to admit to a ward was the highest since modern records began. It topped 60,000 in January, or 11% of emergency admissions. The government also announced the expansion of a scheme last month to help GPs provide care and advice to patients, without them joining long NHS hospital waiting lists in England. Walyalup (Fremantle) call on favourite son to toss the coin for Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash with Yartapuulti Walyalup (Fremantle) call on favourite son to toss the coin for Sir Doug Nicholls Round clash with Yartapuulti Walyalup (Fremantle) legend Jeff Farmer will return to the field later tonight with the Dockers inviting him to toss the coin ahead of their Yartapuulti (Port Adelaide) clash. The small forward, who played 269 games and kicked 537 goals across stints at Melbourne and Walyalup has been heavily involved in this year’s clash, having designed the jumpers for Sir Doug Nicholls round along with his Father Jeff Farmer Snr, Mother Iris and in collaboration with Roger Hayden. “To put something out there that, year to year, generation to generation, our family can see and hear – this story that ties my life, my footy life and then obviously the combination of being able to play at Fremantle,” Farmer told the club’s website last week. He even signed some of the jumpers after visiting the club earlier this week to give them a rev up ahead of the crucial clash, which could see the Dockers re-enter the top eight. Indigenous star Michael Walters was on hand to present the coin to Farmer. If you’d like to view this content, please adjust your Cookie Settings. The great thing about this football club is the way they continually reach out to me and make me feel a part of it even though I left a long time ago,” he said. “Thank you very much, hopefully I get the opportunity to see the Premiership come home later this year.” Source link #Walyalup #Fremantle #call #favourite #son #toss #coin #Sir #Doug #Nicholls #clash #Yartapuulti Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Teacher had sex with pupil at teen’s family home Teacher had sex with pupil at teen’s family home A teacher has been banned from the profession after admitting to a six-month ******* relationship with a pupil 25 years ago. Helen Flinders, 55, was working at St Joseph’s School in Swindon when she kissed the student at another teacher’s house following sports day, leading to regular ******* encounters at the student’s house throughout 2000. The incident came to light in 2011 while Ms Flinders was employed at another school, from which she resigned a few months later. Wiltshire Police said no action was taken due to legislation at the time. Giving evidence at a professional conduct hearing, Ms Flinders said: “During July 2000, I went for a drink with Pupil A after sports day. “We then went to another teacher’s house. I asked Pupil A for a kiss goodbye. He kissed me and it was consensual.” She explained a “consensual ******* relationship” then began. The pupil said: “During the summer, my parents worked during the day and were out of the house, so they were not aware that our relationship had progressed to a ******* relationship.” The pupil ended the relationship in December 2000. Rumours confirmed Ms Flinders left St Joseph’s in March 2002 and started working as an art teacher at Churchfields school in September 2002. In 2011, the pupil was asked about the rumours of their relationship and confirmed it to someone whose relative worked as head of art at Churchfields School, leading to the police investigation. Ms Flinders resigned and did not return to teaching. A referral was made to the Teaching Regulation Agency in March 2022. The Abuse of Position of Trust legislation, making it an offence for anyone over 18 to have ******* intercourse with a younger person if they are in a position of trust over them, was not enacted until 8 January 2001. This was weeks after the ******* relationship ceased, so no further action was taken by the police. During the hearing, the pupil agreed the relationship was consensual, stating he never felt taken advantage of and did “not hold any bad feelings toward her”. In a witness statement, Ms Flinders apologised to the pupil, adding: “I hope the process for him of reliving these events have not harmed him in any way. “I hope he can move forward in a positive light.” The panel said she “seriously breached the teacher pupil boundary, abused her position of trust and failed to protect the safety and well-being of Pupil A”, banning her from teaching for life. Despite wet weather, thousands gather for day one of Boston Calling music festival Despite wet weather, thousands gather for day one of Boston Calling music festival Boston Calling had a wet start to the weekend on Friday, but the rain did not stop people from smiling and enjoying the music. Tens of thousands of music fans are expected to attend the annual music festival this Memorial Day weekend. Country singer Luke Combs took to the stage Friday night, as well as Sheryl Crow and Megan Moroney, along with dozens of other artists set for Saturday and Sunday. “I’m looking forward to seeing Luke Combs,” said Joe Mazzarella. “He’s my inspiration.” “Tonight, it’s T-Pain, tomorrow Fall Out Boy, Avril, All Time Low, it’s our pre-teen emo years that we’re reminiscing,” Kara Corslund said. The rainy and dreary weather is not fazing those who have been looking forward to this weekend for months. “It’s not too bad either, just a couple sprinkles,, not going to hurt nobody,” Charlie Bowe said. The music festival at Harvard’s Athletic Center looks a lot different compared to last year. “It was really fun, really hot the day that I went,” Allison Stacey said. “A lot of people were passing out and stuff.” Organizers with Boston Calling added extra water stations throughout the venue, redesigned the stages to help with congestion, and also added an indoor arena. Meanwhile, the group TLC did not perform on Friday due to a medical issue. “Any time that an artist needs to be like, ‘hey, I can’t do this for whatever reason’, that’s their choice, it stinks they’re not here, but take care of yourself,” Corslund said. Fall Out Boy and Avril Lavigne are Saturday’s headliners with the Dave Matthews Band on Sunday. perform This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Mortgage holders tipped to pay their bank millions in additional payments Mortgage holders tipped to pay their bank millions in additional payments *********** mortgage holders will give the major banks $76m in additional payments due to the 10 days it takes for them to pass on a rate cut. New figures released by Finder shows the big four banks hold approximately $1.13 trillion in household debt, with a 25 basis point cut earning roughly $7.6m a day on the debt. This means, the 10-day delay on average it takes for the banks to pass on an interest-rate cut will cost households $76m. Finder home loan expert Richard Whitten said even with the 10-day delay, the major banks were so far passing on the rate cut, something they had not always historically done. “Of course, the banks aren’t setting rates to be generous. They’re responding to their own funding costs,” he said. “That is, their costs for borrowing money to fund customers’ loans and other business.” “And how much profit they think they can get on top of that. The cost and profit calculations of each institution are going to look a little different.” Camera IconAustralians will save $91 a month on an average mortgage rate after the rate cut. NewsWire / Nicholas Eagar Credit: NewsWire The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) announced on Tuesday, May 20 that it was cutting the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 3.85 per cent. It follows a fall in Australia’s headline inflation rate to 2.4 per cent in the March quarter, while the all-important trimmed mean inflation rate – which removes volatile components such as electricity and fuel costs – came in at 2.9 per cent. Either rate falls within the RBA’s inflation target rate of 2 to 3 per cent. How much will Aussies save? How much Aussies will save after the rate cut will depend on the size of their mortgages. Those with a $500,00 debt will save about $76 a month, while those with a $750,000 mortgage are tipped to be $114 better off and Aussies who borrowed $1m will save about $152 a month. Finder head of consumer research Graham Cooke said more than one in two homeowners didn’t even know their own rate. Australia’s Cash Rate 2022 ‘Mortgage repayments have a huge effect on the monthly cash flow of *********** households, yet more than half are unaware how much they could be overpaying each month,” he said. “With two rate cuts in three months, the average homeowner could be saving thousands.” He said the average borrower stood to save about $213 per month – $2553 annually – thanks to the interest rate cuts in February and May. Mr Cooke said loyalty to your lender could be expensive. “Banks rarely reward complacency, so reviewing your mortgage once a year should be as routine as your tax return,” he said. When will a rate cut be passed through? Within 24 hours of the RBA announcing a rate cut, 30 lenders said they were passing on the full rate cut. This included all four major banks that within 30 minutes of the announcement informed customers that the rate cut would be passed on. Camera IconThe major banks are passing on the interest rate cut. NewsWire Credit: NCA NewsWire NAB confirmed it would decrease its standard variable home loan interest rate by 0.25 per cent, effective from Friday, May 30, with the 10-day delay in line with previous changes to interest rates in the wake of a cash rate change. ANZ followed, saying it would also be dropping its variable rate by 0.25 per cent, effective on May 30. Commonwealth Bank of Australia has moved in line with the other majors and will also drop variable interest rates on home loans by 0.25 per cent. Westpac told customers it too would pass on the rate cut in full to mortgage holders and savers, albeit a touch slower. Westpac explained to NewsWire it is faster to move on savings rates compared with mortgages due to the complexity of the different products. Savings rates are applied universally to every customer, while mortgage holders have differing rates depending on their circumstances. It was the only one of the major banks to make an announcement on savings rates. From June 3, the bank will decrease its variable interest rates by 0.25 per cent for new and existing customers. Bendigo Bank says it will reduce the cash rate in line with the majors from June 6. Australia’s fifth largest bank, Macquarie, passed on the rate cut on Friday. What’s a Normal A1C for Your Age? The Answer May Surprise You What’s a Normal A1C for Your Age? The Answer May Surprise You Monitoring your A1C is essential for both preventing and managing type 2 diabetes. Why? Regular testing can help detect elevated blood sugar levels and assess the effectiveness of your current treatment plan, especially when it comes to warding off diabetes complications. But what is considered a normal A1C, and does it change with age? Here, experts break down what you need to know about A1C—how to keep it steady, what can affect it and the simple lifestyle changes that help. What is A1C and why does it matter? The A1C blood test, also known as the hemoglobin A1C or HbA1c test, provides a “big picture view” of your blood sugar levels over the past two to three months, explains Cory Rice, DO, chief clinical advisor at Biote. It’s one of the most common tools for diagnosing or monitoring diabetes. Here’s how it works: Sugar in the blood attaches to hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells. The higher your glucose levels, the more sugar binds to the hemoglobin. The A1C test measures the percentage of hemoglobin with sugar attached to it, says Dr. Rice. What is a normal A1C by age? Doctors explain the range Healthy A1C targets can change over time and may differ if you have underlying health conditions such as diabetes. In fact, research shows that A1C levels tend to rise about 0.1 percent per decade with age, even among people without diabetes, notes Dr. Rice. Generally speaking, here’s what your A1C test results indicate: Healthy A1C: below 5.7 percentPrediabetes: between 5.7 and 6.4 percentDiabetes: 6.5 percent or higher As for how your A1C readings may change, Erich S. Huang, MD, PhD, associate chief clinical officer for informatics and technology at Verily, says the following ranges are considered normal for most adults: 20s-30s: 4.0 to 5.8 percent40s-50s: 4.1 to 6.1 percent60s+: 4.4 to 6.5 percent What affects A1C levels? Key risk factors While a healthy A1C level is typically defined as below 5.7 percent, several conditions and risk factors can influence what’s considered “normal,” especially in women as we age. And one of the biggest influences is hormone status, explains Dr. Rice. “Premenopausal women tend to have lower A1C levels, while postmenopausal women tend to have higher A1C levels,” he says. It’s important to know what’s considered healthy for your age, since keeping your A1C in check helps prevent conditions such as chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, stroke and eye diseases, says Yoon Kook Kim, MD, endocrinologist at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. How to check your A1C at home safely For those who want to monitor their blood sugar more closely in between regular doctor’s visits, an at-home A1C testing kit is convenient and helpful. “These kits allow you to check your average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months without visiting a lab,” says Dr. Rice. However, he suggests looking for validated home kits, as there is variability in the marketplace. And while you can’t “feel” changes in your A1C, Dr. Huang says you’ll know when your blood glucose is low (a condition known as hypoglycemia that requires immediate treatment). He notes that symptoms to watch out for include shakiness, palpitations, anxiety, sweating and hunger. Simple lifestyle changes to keep A1C in a healthy range The good news is that consistent, everyday habits can make a meaningful difference in keeping your A1C healthy with age. Dr. Rice says one of the most powerful habits is regular exercise, especially when it involves both aerobic exercise and resistance training. And what goes hand in hand with exercise? A balanced diet such as the Mediterranean diet, which emphasizes fresh produce, whole grains, lean meats and healthy fats. Dr. Kim also suggests avoiding sugary drinks high in calories, controlling your stress and maintaining a regular sleep schedule as much as possible. Can hormone replacement therapy lower A1C? HRT may help lower A1C levels that increase with age—especially in postmenopausal women—even if you’ve already been diagnosed with diabetes. Estrogen, in particular, influences insulin sensitivity. After menopause, the drop in estrogen can lead to increased insulin resistance, making it harder to maintain stable blood sugar levels, explains Dr. Rice, who recommends checking your hormone levels if your A1C is elevated. HRT can help improve insulin resistance and counteract some of those changes. Nancy Pelosi Reveals Top Dem She Thinks Will Run in 2028 Nancy Pelosi Reveals Top Dem She Thinks Will Run in 2028 Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is already placing her bets on who will run for president in 2028. Pelosi said she thinks that Rahm Emanuel—the former chief of staff to former President Barack Obama, former Chicago mayor, and longtime Democratic congressman—will step up to the plate. “I think he’s going to run,” Pelosi told The Free Press in an interview published Friday. In the same Free Press article, he revealed: “I’m not done with public service. I’m hoping it’s not done with me.” He did not, however, admit that he plans to run for president outright. “Before I make a decision, I want to know that I have an answer to what I think ails our country, ails our politics, and ails the party—and they may all be the same answer,” he said. When reporter Peter Savodnik asked how he was doing, he quipped: “I don’t have prostate *******,” referring to former President Joe Biden, who was diagnosed with prostate ******* last week. Hegseth puts new limits on reporters in the Pentagon Hegseth puts new limits on reporters in the Pentagon US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has issued orders that require journalists to have official escorts within much of the Pentagon building, the latest in a series of Trump administration restrictions placed on the press. The measures, which take effect immediately, bar credentialed reporters from most of the Department of Defence headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, unless they have an official approval and *******. “While the Department remains committed to transparency, the Department is equally obligated to protect CSNI (classified intelligence) and sensitive information – the unauthorised disclosure of which could put the lives of US Service members in danger,” Hegseth said in a memorandum. He called the protection of classified national intelligence information and operational security “an unwavering imperative for the Department.” The Pentagon Press Association, a membership organisation representing the interests of the press corps covering the US military, said the new rules appeared to be a “direct attack on the freedom of the press.” “The decision is purportedly based on concerns about operational security. But the Pentagon Press Corps has had access to non-secured, unclassified spaces in the Pentagon for decades, under Republican and Democratic administrations, including in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, without any concern about OP-SEC from DoD leadership,” the statement said. The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment on the press association’s statement. Since President Donald Trump returned to office in January, the Pentagon has launched an investigation into leaks that resulted in three officials being placed on administrative leave. It has also required legacy media organisations, including the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN and NBC News, to vacate their Pentagon office spaces in a new rotation system that brought in others, including outlets generally friendly to the Trump administration such as the New York Post, Breitbart, the Daily Caller and One America News Network. The Trump administration says the move is intended to allow other media outlets the opportunity to report as resident members of the press corps. More broadly, the Trump administration has deployed lie detector tests to investigate unclassified leaks, with some Department of Homeland Security officials being told they could be fired for refusing polygraphs, Reuters reported. The White House says Trump will not tolerate leaks to the media and that federal employees who do so should be held accountable. Hegseth’s order also requires members of the Pentagon press corps to acknowledge a responsibility to protect national intelligence and sensitive information, and says they will be issued with new credentials that more prominently identify them as members of the press. “We also anticipate a forthcoming announcement of additional security measures and enhanced scrutiny on the issuance of (credentials),” the memo said. Arizona plans to carry out its second execution this year

Arizona plans to carry out its second execution this year Arizona plans to carry out its second execution this year This photo provided by the Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry, shows death row prisoner Richard Kenneth Djerf. (Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry via AP) PHOENIX (AP) — The state of Arizona is planning to carry out a second execution this year, this time for a man convicted of violently killing four members of a family in 1993 at their home in metro Phoenix. Prosecutors filed a request Thursday with the Arizona Supreme Court to set a briefing schedule leading up to the execution of Richard Kenneth Djerf, who pleaded guilty to killing Albert Luna Sr., his wife, Patricia, and their 18-year-old daughter Rochelle and 5-year-old son Damien. A judge later sentenced Djerf to death. If the court agrees to the schedule suggested by prosecutors, the state’s highest court would consider the request for Djerf’s execution warrant in late July, with the execution likely occurring in early September. The Associated Press has sent an email seeking comment to attorneys who represented Djerf. Two months ago, Arizona executed 53-year-old Aaron Brian Gunches in the 2002 killing of Ted Price, marking the state’s first use of the death penalty in over two years Gunches’ execution had originally been scheduled for April 2023, but it was called off after Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs ordered a review of the state’s death penalty procedures. Late last year, Hobbs fired the retired judge she had appointed to conduct the review, and the state’s corrections department announced changes in the team that lethally injects death row prisoners. Arizona, which has 111 prisoners on death row, has been heavily criticized for its use of the death penalty. It underwent a nearly eight-year hiatus in the use of the death penalty after a 2014 execution was botched and because of difficulties obtaining drugs for execution. Why people are stockpiling ahead of disposable vapes ban Why people are stockpiling ahead of disposable vapes ban Ruth Clegg Health and wellbeing reporter Cara Hallinan Cara is stockpiling ahead of the ban and says she is hoping to buy enough disposable vapes to last her through the summer Cara Hallinan says she and many of her friends are feeling very nervous about the looming disposable vape ban. In fact, she says: “I’m not sure what we are going to do.” The 25-year-old took up vaping five years ago. One of her friends gave her a puff on theirs and that was it, she could finally wean herself off cigarettes. Cara says it was cherry fizz flavoured vapes which helped her quit her 20-a-day smoking habit, and now, as the ban looms, she’s buying as many as she can before they become ******** to sell or supply across the ***. “I’ve been buying boxes of them from my local discount store. They’re trying to get rid of them, so I’ve been getting ten vapes for £20.” Cara says she’s got about 40 vapes now, enough to last a few weeks, but she wants to stockpile enough to get her through the summer. Cara Hallinan Cara says she has been buying boxes of vapes from her local discount store and she will continue until the ban comes in From 1 June, it will be ******** to buy or sell disposable vapes. Only devices considered to be reusable will be legal. They must have a rechargeable battery, a replaceable coil and be refillable. Cara understands there will still be a wide variety of vapes out there to buy, but she’s not convinced they will work for her. “With everything else going on in my life, what if I forget to recharge my vape? And then I wake up one morning without a vape, or I run out of charge at work? “I’m used to the ease of being able to buy a disposable one when I need.” Cara is one of more than three million ex-smokers who have made the switch from cigarettes to vapes over the past few years. While vapes are considered a healthier alternative to cigarettes, there are concerns that vaping provides a gateway into nicotine addiction – with disposable vapes enticing children and young people with their fruity flavours and cheap prices. Even though rechargeable vapes are the most popular, there are still around 30% of vapers who prefer to use disposable vapes. “One of the big attractions is ease of use,” Dan Marchant, owner of online retailer, Vape Club, and co-founder of the *** Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA), says. “Buying a disposable vape is like buying a packet of cigarettes – just **** to the shop and get one over the counter.” He says he’s seen sales of the most popular flavours of vapes double over the past few weeks as some customers stock up. Another online retailer, Haypp, has also seen sales rise ahead of the ban. Haypp’s scientific director, Dr Marina Murphy, said: “Daily sales are now regularly surpassing even our ****** Friday peaks, which had previously been our biggest sales days.” Some are worried about the change in taste. Disposable vapes tend to be sweeter than refillable vapes due to them often having more sweeteners and nicotine salts in the E-liquid. ‘Smoker of the year award’ After 40 years of chain-smoking cigarettes, Baroness Claire Fox of Buckley says it was the strawberry and banana flavour disposable vapes that finally helped her quit. “They worked a treat and for the past 18 months I have been smoke-free.” The 64-year-old peer admits it wasn’t easy, but after being advised by two doctors to try vapes, she’s gone from being the “proud winner of the smoker of the year award” to a life free from the harms of tobacco. Andrew Firth Baroness Fox smoked for 40 years but says she finally stopped 18 months ago with the help of strawberry and banana flavoured disposable vapes And now, she says, she is dreading 1 June when the disposable vape ban comes in. “I’ve been stocking up with stashes of brightly-coloured vape boxes both at home and at work. “The rechargables have a metallic, battery taste which I don’t like.” She says disposable vapes have had a “miraculous impact on smoking levels”. “Finally, we have a smoking cessation device that works and we ban it – it’s counter- productive and daft.” The outspoken peer, who often berates legislation she sees as infringing civil liberties, says environmental concerns are clearly trumping public health concerns. The *** government wants to reduce the impact on the environment – an estimated five million disposable vapes were thrown away last year – and cut the number of children and young people vaping. Health experts agree anyone who does not smoke should not start vaping, as it may cause long-term damage to lungs, hearts and brains. A Censuswide poll, commissioned by Vape Club, asked 2,000 vapers across the *** how their habits were going to change in the wake of the ban next month. While 49% of people who use disposable vapes said they were going to switch to different types of rechargeable devices, and 16% said they were going to stop vaping altogether, it has also produced some “worrying results”, Mr Marchant says. “We found that 11% said they were going to stockpile after the ban – by going abroad and buying from countries where disposables are sold legally and then bringing them back into the ***. “And more worryingly, 18% said if they couldn’t get hold of disposable vapes they would go back to smoking after the ban comes in.” Ruth Clegg Nick says he’s going to have to throw out £6,000 worth of disposable vapes when the ban comes in This is something, Nick, who owns Mist Vapes, recognises, as he points to the local newsagent a few shops down the road in Whalley Range, south Manchester. “Many of my regular customers say they will stop vaping when the ban comes in, instead of coming here, they’ll go to Booze and ***** down the road and pick up a pack of cigarettes and go back to smoking.” He is worried about the future of his business. He points to the rows of pastel-coloured boxes, lined up on shelves that cover a whole wall in his shop. There are popular flavours like pineapple ice, rainbow and blueberry sour. “They’ll have to go,” he says. “And that’s nearly £6,000 worth of stock down the drain. “I only set up my business a year ago, so it’s relatively new. I knew the ban was coming, but with 90% of my sales being disposable, I’ve had to keep on restocking.” He believes the government has failed small retail shops like his own. “I don’t think it’s going to make much difference to vaping habits – many of the rechargeable vapes now look the same as the disposable, you can buy them pre-filled and charged.” He turns one over – the only difference he says is the charging point at the bottom. “I’m selling the rechargeable at the same price but with less of a mark-up.” Ruth Clegg Nick says there is very little difference between the disposable and the refillable The government says disposable vapes “blight our towns and cities”. Circular economy minister, Mary Creagh, says the ban will boost the economy long-term. “This is an important step on the road to a circular economy, where we use our resources for longer, clean up our communities, accelerate the path to net-zero and create thousands of jobs across the country.” Source link #people #stockpiling #ahead #disposable #vapes #ban Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Siakam takes Pacers one step closer to NBA big dance Siakam takes Pacers one step closer to NBA big dance Pascal Siakam scored a playoff career-high 39 points as the Indiana Pacers beat the New York Knicks 114-109 to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals. Myles Turner had 16 points while Tyrese Haliburton registered 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who head home halfway to their second trip to the NBA Finals. They lost to the Lakers in 2000 in their only shot at the title. Game 3 is on Sunday in Indiana, though the Pacers might prefer to keep it right where it is. They have won six straight road games since falling at Milwaukee in Game 3 of the first round. Jalen Brunson had 36 points and 11 assists for the Knicks, who need a quick turnaround or their first appearance in the conference finals in 25 years will be a brief one. They defended much better after their crushing collapse in a 138-135 overtime loss in Game 1, but couldn’t find enough scoring to come back after a bad start to the fourth quarter. Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns each had 20 points and seven rebounds for the Knicks, but Towns played just 28 minutes as coach Tom Thibodeau went longer with backup Mitchell Robinson, a much better defender who grabbed nine rebounds. It was tied at 81 after three, before the Pacers opened the fourth with a 13-4 run to move ahead 94-85 on Siakam’s 3-pointer with 9:17 remaining. They would quickly push the margin back to around there every time the Knicks got any momentum, and it was 110-100 after another basket by Siakam with 2:45 to play. The Knicks scored nine straight to make it 110-109 on Josh Hart’s basket with 14 seconds to go. Aaron Nesmith made two free throws for the Pacers, Brunson was well off on a 3-point attempt and Turner finished it out with two free throws. The 50th playoff meeting between the rivals – the Pacers lead 28-22, all since 1993 – more closely resembled their defensive battles of the 1990s than the shootout of two nights earlier. The Knicks led that one by 14 with 2:45 to play before the Pacers caught them on Haliburton’s jumper as time expired and won it in OT. This time, Indiana raced to a 19-9 lead, but the Knicks quickly caught them when Robinson and Deuce McBride entered and the game remained within a single-digit margin nearly the entire rest of the night. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways McDonald’s hours of operation are changing this summer. The beloved burger joint knows that longer days can also mean longer nights, so it’s extending its late-night hours at almost all of its locations in the U.S. According to a statement from a company spokesperson, “a vast majority” of McDonald’s locations nationwide will now be open until midnight or later beginning this summer and throughout the year. To prepare for the big shift, the fast food giant said it plans to hire somewhere around 375,000 new employees. The spokesperson also said most of the menu will be available during those extended late-night hours, with some room for leeway as McDonald’s will leave certain decisions up to individual franchisees. So you should be able to get that McFlurry or the new Chicken Strips and tangy dipping sauce, even after midnight (whether or not breakfast menu items will be made available is currently unclear). Related:The One Thing That Surprised Us About McDonald’s Newest McCrispy Chicken Strips There are a few exceptions to the rule regarding the new hours, with restaurants in “non-traditional locations” like airports, rest stops, and shopping malls not expected to enforce the extension. This latest update follows several other recent revisions announced by Mickey D’s, including the introduction of some CosMc’s items to regular McDonald’s menus, the permanent addition of real lemonade, along with upgraded breakfast offers—not to mention its plans for the future of CosMc’s locations.
