Rival coaches back AFL umpires over Bedford injury call
Rival coaches back AFL umpires over Bedford injury call
Rival coaches Adam Kingsley and Michael Voss are united in the belief that umpires made the right call to stop play when GWS tagger Toby Bedford was nursing a shoulder injury.
Bedford hurt his right shoulder when attempting to tackle an opponent in the third quarter at Marvel Stadium on Saturday, and play continued nearby for several seconds.
But the controlling umpire eventually blew his whistle, with Carlton’s Tom De Koning in possession just metres from Bedford, who was crouched down clutching his shoulder.
A ball-up was called after Bedford rose to his feet, and he eventually took his place next to Blues skipper Patrick Cripps at the stoppage.
The incident came with umpires still under a fierce spotlight after play was allowed to continue when Collingwood’s Lachie Schultz was concussed a fortnight ago.
GWS coach Kingsley said it was “a really tricky one” for umpires, but backed their decision to stop play during his side’s 17.8 (110) to 12.10 (82) win.
“A ball-up, I thought, was the fair outcome,” Kingsley said.
“The last couple of weeks the umpires have been under a bit of pressure around not stopping the play, so what would we expect them to do?
“Of course they’re going to be cautious, and so I thought they made the right call, absolutely.”
Carlton coach Voss agreed, noting the scrutiny umpires have been under in the media after the Schultz incident.
“That’s why you’ve got to be really careful how hard you go on those things,” Voss said.
“Their intention was fine, so we’ve got to give them a little bit of a break on this.
“You’d love it to be perfect, and the reality is maybe that could’ve been handled differently.
“But you’ve got to look at the umpire’s intention, and he’s trying to do the right thing.
“And the ball-up (call) ended up being the right thing, I guess.”
Kingsley laughed off suggestions players or coaches could try to exploit umpires’ caution by faking injuries.
“Asking our players to lie down in critical moments during passages of play or something? It’s probably not something that will happen,” he said.
“There’s a fairness with every competitor in this competition, whether they’re coaching or playing, that would suggest they’re not going to try to do that.”
Kingsley did not agree with suggestions an injured player should be forced off the field before play restarts.
“Then you’re kind of at the discretion of an umpire’s assessment of an injury, which I don’t particularly like,” he said.

Ultron Breaks the NetEase Formula In a Big Way
Ultron Breaks the NetEase Formula In a Big Way
Marvel Rivals is about to welcome its most attitude-heavy Strategist yet. Forget gentle encouragement and supportive callouts—Ultron’s version of bedside manner will probably involve questioning your tactical decisions while reluctantly keeping you alive.
The mechanical menace drops into Season 2.5 on May 30th, armed with enough sarcasm to power a small arc reactor. This isn’t your typical backline babysitter who panics when teammates take damage. Ultron operates on a different philosophy entirely: if you’re constantly getting hurt, maybe the problem isn’t his healing output but your positioning choices.
The anti-healbot strategist we didn’t know we needed
Ultron’s approach to battlefield medicine in Marvel Rivals is beautifully simple: dead enemies can’t hurt your teammates. His kit revolves around dealing damage while providing support, making him the first Strategist since Mantis who doesn’t apologize for having an offensive bone in his metallic body.
The character trailer showcases his “Encephalo-Ray” beam melting faces while his drones simultaneously heal allies. It’s preventative care taken to its logical extreme—why patch up wounds when you can eliminate the source?
The community has already embraced this delightfully hostile approach to support gameplay. Players are genuinely excited about a Strategist who won’t get flamed for prioritizing damage over constant healing streams:
Comment byu/zanzomon from discussion inmarvelrivals
This philosophy perfectly encapsulates Ultron’s design ethos. His “Imperative: Patch” ability lets him deploy healing drones while focusing on eliminating threats. It’s multitasking at its finest—keeping allies alive while making enemies… very dead:
Comment byu/zanzomon from discussion inmarvelrivals
The beauty lies in this tactical approach. Instead of frantically healing damage after it’s dealt, Ultron prevents it entirely. His ultimate, Rage of Ultron, summons multiple drone copies that simultaneously damage enemies and heal allies in the same devastating barrage:
Comment byu/zanzomon from discussion inmarvelrivals
Comment byu/zanzomon from discussion inmarvelrivals
That Team Fortress 2 reference hits different when applied to Marvel Rivals‘ support meta. Ultron represents everything the Medic couldn’t be—a combat-ready healer who doesn’t hide behind teammates but actively hunts down threats.
NetEase’s concerning healbot conversion program
From “land shark” to “sitting duck.” | Image Credit: Marvel Entertainment/YouTube
Unfortunately, Ultron’s aggressive design comes at a time when NetEase seems determined to homogenize all Strategists into passive healers. The pattern started with Rocket Raccoon’s controversial rework earlier this season.
Rocket used to embody the “good offense is best defense” mentality. His mobility allowed aggressive positioning, and his ultimate focused on empowering team pushes rather than reactive damage control.
The rework has since stripped away his tactical flexibility, forcing him into a traditional backline role with reduced mobility and a watered-down ultimate that prioritizes healing over the devastating team-wipe potential it once offered.
Jeff the Land Shark faces an even worse fate with the upcoming Season 2.5 changes. His Hide and Seek ability—the core of his self-sufficient playstyle—now has a six-second energy cap. His Healing Bubble switched from instant healing to healing over time, with charges reduced from six to three.
These changes transform Jeff from a flanking menace into another stationary healbot. Sure, his Joyful Splash now damages enemies, but the overall rework pushes him toward passive gameplay that competitive players apparently prefer.
Comment byu/zanzomon from discussion inmarvelrivals
This cynical take unfortunately aligns with NetEase‘s recent track record. The company seems to be catering to players who spam “gg no heals” whenever they overextend and die, rather than supporting the unique playstyles that made these characters interesting.
The real concern is whether Ultron will survive his initial popularity intact. His current kit promises something genuinely different—a support who insults you for needing healing while efficiently eliminating the problems causing that need. Let’s hope NetEase doesn’t strip away that personality in favor of another generic healbot.
What’s your take on Ultron’s aggressive support style? Drop your thoughts below and let’s discuss whether he’ll survive the inevitable nerf cycle.

Seven Knights Re:BIRTH is a remake of the original 2015 RPG, now in pre-registration
Launch goodies await from the website and the app store
OG elements with modernised features
Legendary Heroes Rachel of the Seven Knights and Ace of the Four Lords to be given away
Netmarble has officially opened pre-registration sign-ups for Seven Knights Re:BIRTH, the studio’s upcoming adventure based on the popular Seven Knights IP. Combat will be a turn-based affair, and it will supposedly offer a remake of the OG 2015 RPG that boasts more than 70 million players around the world.
Now, I don’t doubt the popularity of the franchise, especially with Seven Knights Idle Adventure and Seven Knights 2 still in the mix. For this one, it seems it’ll stay true to its roots with key elements of the characters and the narrative staying intact. It will supposedly retain the combat systems and core mechanics as well, albeit upgraded with modern gameplay features.
Of course, pre-registering now will reward you with launch goodies, including Legendary Heroes Rachel of the Seven Knights and Ace of the Four Lords. This comes with Hero Summon Vouchers (x10) and 2 million Gold as well, plus Key Bundles (x10) simply by signing up on the official website.
On the other hand, if you pre-register via Google Play and the App Store, you’ll score a Vanguard Set plus a special package with a 5-star **** Croa, not to mention a Skill Enhancement Stone, Golds, Topaz, and Superb Eggs to boot. It’s not bad for a simple sign-up, eh?
In the meantime, you can also join the community of followers on the official Facebook page to stay updated on all the latest developments, visit the official website for more info, or take a little peek at the embedded clip above to get a feel of the vibes and visuals.
It’s free-to-play with in-app purchases, and the App Store gives it an expected launch date of Sept 30th. Do take that with a grain of salt, though, as these things often change without prior notice.

Historic Goldfields cycle race canned for 2025
Historic Goldfields cycle race canned for 2025
One of the region’s most time-honoured annual sporting events, the Goldfields Cyclassic, has been cancelled this year with no guarantees that it will be resurrected.
Since 1928, the Cyclassic has taken pride of place among Australia’s oldest and most historic road races on the June long weekend, as the blue-ribbon event on the Eastern Goldfields Cycle Club’s annual calendar.
Club chair Angus McConnell could not be reached for comment on Friday.
However, formal notification of this year’s cancellation was made on the event’s official website, via a statement.
“The EGCC wishes to announce that this year’s Goldfields Cyclassic will not be going ahead,” the statement said.
“We would like to extend our sincere thanks to all stakeholders, sponsors, volunteers, suppliers and to everyone who has participated in the event over the years.
“While the EGCC won’t be hosting the event in 2025, we remain committed to our members and assessing the future viability of the Cyclassic.”
Logistically, the event requires a power of work that includes operating special charter flights from Perth to the Goldfields and back for competitors and support crews.
Charters were made available for last year’s events because commercial flights to Kalgoorlie-Boulder do not arrive in time for race registrations and briefings.
It is understood dwindling numbers had placed additional pressure on the EGCC committee, following the withdrawal of a Perth-based events company as the main organisers.
The Cyclassic was cancelled in 2020 because of COVID-19 but was revived in 2021 amid an excellent field, and the 2022 event comprised $20,000 prizemoney.
Formerly the Menzies to Kalgoorlie Classic, the format was changed in 2011 to coincide with the Leonora Golden Gift athletics carnival.
It was just the second time in the program’s long history the race did not end in Kalgoorlie-Boulder and reinforced its standing as one of *********** cycling’s most historic events.
The route was reversed in 1994 as part of the Menzies Shire Council’s centenary celebrations and was won by star Kalgoorlie-Boulder rider Paul Miller, a former European professional.
The 2023 Cyclassic was boosted by the inaugural Minara Resources Leonora Women’s Classic, from Menzies to Leonora, that was raced on the second day of the two-stage program.

How Nanai’s club axing steeled him for Maroons
How Nanai’s club axing steeled him for Maroons
Queensland second-rower Jeremiah Nanai’s round-one axing for North Queensland has proven to be a blessing in disguise, particularly for the Maroons.
That is the view of Maroons No.14 and Cowboys co-captain Tom Dearden who said Nanai’s response in clubland was outstanding and had led to him being chosen for the State of Origin series opener on Wednesday night.
Nanai was dropped after the loss to Manly for defensive issues and after one game in the Queensland Cup he was recalled and has not been out of the Cowboys side since. He has still missed 28 tackles in nine games but his efforts have been much improved.
Maroons coach Billy Slater is a fan of Nanai and he has played eight Origin matches since Slater became coach.
“Jeremiah has been playing back row for a long time, he brings so much punch,” Dearden said.
“I thought since he came back from getting dropped in round one, he has been awesome for the Cowboys in the back row and he deserves his spot.
“(The axing) was about him wanting to work hard and be hungry to play footy again.
“He was back in there pretty quickly and since he came back in, the way he has gone about his defensive part of the game and his efforts have been brilliant.
“Jeremiah has got some of the best punch of any back-rower in the game and that’s what makes him such a great player.”
Maroons legend Justin Hodges said on Fox League that the Nanai axing was “the kick up the butt he needed” to get him back in the Origin frame.
Nanai’s line running and ability to catch a high kick are his strengths.
“He is very skilful for a back-rower. He has got big hands, he would probably be good at basketball,” Dearden said.
“He understands where to be in the right place at the right time. He is an aerial threat.”
Nanai is named to partner North Queensland lock Reuben Cotter in the back-row. Cotter has proven adept both in the middle or on an edge in Origin.”Rubes, him moving to the back row, he is the ultimate competitor in Origin and just the toughness he plays with, he is built for that arena,” Dearden said.
“It doesn’t matter where you put him in the forwards, you know he will turn up and do his job.”
Cotter has not appeared happy with his form at times this year but Dearden said he had been strong.
“I thought he has been great this year, he plays with so much effort and that’s what makes him such a great player to play with,” Dearden said.
“When you watch the game from the outside in, you don’t always notice the areas he does so well. There is a reason he is in this team, it’s all about those little effort areas and the toughness he plays with. He has been a great player for Queensland and I’m excited for him next Wednesday.”

US judge ordered Trump to facilitate return of Guatemalan deportee
US judge ordered Trump to facilitate return of Guatemalan deportee
Guatemalan migrants arrive at La Aurora Air Force Base on a deportation flight from the U.S., in Guatemala City, Guatemala, January 20, 2025.
Cristina Chiquin | Reuters
A federal judge ordered the Trump administration on Friday to facilitate the return of a gay Guatemalan man who said he was deported to Mexico despite fearing he would be persecuted there, after officials acknowledged an error in his case.
U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy in Boston issued the order days after the Justice Department notified him that its claim that the man had expressly stated he was not afraid of being sent to Mexico was based on erroneous information.
The Justice Department said last week that upon further investigation, officials were unable to identify any Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer who had asked the man, identified as “O.C.G.,” about fears he had for his safety.
Murphy, an appointee of Trump’s Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, called the case a “horror” and said that “while mistakes obviously happen, the events leading up to this decision are troubling.”
The ruling marks the latest instance of a judge ordering President Donald Trump’s administration to facilitate the return of a migrant swept up in the Republican’s efforts to carry out mass deportations as part of his hard-line immigration agenda, following a mistake in an individual’s case.
In a class action lawsuit filed by O.C.G. and other migrants, the judge had blocked the administration from swiftly deporting people to countries other than their own without first hearing any concerns they had about their safety.
“Due process is, in some sense, a binary – one either receives what the Constitution requires, or one does not,” Murphy wrote. “It has been clear that O.C.G. did not receive what the Constitution requires.”
The Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The government likewise made an error with Maryland resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador in March despite an order protecting him from removal. He remains there, despite a judge ordering the administration to facilitate his return.
Guatemalan migrants arrive at La Aurora International Airport after being deported from the United States, as the U.S. prepares to lift the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) era restrictions known as Title 42, that have blocked migrants at the U.S.- Mexico border from seeking asylum since 2020, in Guatemala City, Guatemala May 11, 2023.
Luis Echeverria | Reuters
Friday’s ruling comes two days after Murphy, in the class action lawsuit case, concluded that the Trump administration had violated his earlier ruling by attempting to deport a group of migrants to South Sudan.
According to his lawyers, O.C.G. is a gay man who fled Guatemala in 2024 after facing death threats based on his sexuality. He entered the United States through Mexico in May 2024.
Murphy said that while an immigration judge in February found O.C.G. deserved protection from being returned to Guatemala, authorities two days later wrongly placed him on a bus to Mexico, where he had recently been ****** and kidnapped.
Trina Realmuto, a lawyer for O.C.G. at the National Immigration Litigation Alliance, said his legal team was “elated” by Murphy’s ruling and would work to facilitate a return plan.
After arriving in Mexico, O.C.G. had to choose between waiting months in detention to apply for asylum in Mexico or return to Guatemala. He chose the latter and went into hiding, his lawyers say.
