1. Flu outbreak closes several North Texas schools for the week Flu outbreak closes several North Texas schools for the week The Brief Schools in Comanche and Godley ISD are closed because of an outbreak of the flu and other respiratory illnesses. Doctors at Cook Children’s and Children’s Health confirmed they are also seeing a high number of cases this week. Experts urge people to stay home if they feel sick. DALLAS – Several schools across North Texas have closed for the rest of the week as the flu and other illnesses spread through campuses, causing attendance rates to drop significantly. What we know At least three school districts and one charter school have shut down for the remainder of the week. In statements, district officials said attendance among both students and staff was already low, and even more students went home sick after being exposed to illnesses on campus. The following schools and districts have announced closures: Comanche ISD – Closed until Jan. 30 Godley ISD – Closed until Feb. 3 Treetops School International – Closed until Feb. 3 Other districts, including Caddo Mills ISD, have reported extremely low attendance but remain open. By the numbers On Tuesday, Godley ISD reported that nearly 650 students were absent, not including those who went home sick during the day. That’s out of 3,200 enrolled students. An additional 60 staff members were out sick on Tuesday. Districts that remain open have reported attendance rates between 70% and 80%, far below normal levels. What they’re saying “The overwhelming information that we received was that it was in the best interest of the health and safety of our students and staff to close down for a few days,” said Jeff Meador, the chief communications officer at Godley ISD. What’s next Staff at closed campuses will work to deep clean and sanitize facilities, according to officials from Treetops School International, Godley ISD, and Comanche ISD. Meanwhile, districts that remain open are urging students to wash their hands frequently and stay home if they are sick to prevent further spread. Respiratory illnesses surge in North Texas “It feels like everyone is saying that they have the flu or they know somebody who has the flu. That’s what we’re seeing,” said Dr. Preeti Sharma, a pediatric pulmonologist with Children’s Health. According to the Dallas hospital system, doctors saw 783 Influenza A cases during the week of Jan. 19. That’s an 83% increase from the week prior. They’re also seeing an increase in rhinovirus. “Sometimes you just get overwhelmed with the number of people who are sick at the same time. And so it may, that may necessitate kind of closing a school or trying to isolate people to control the spread,” Dr. Sharma said. Cook Children’s said flu cases are surging there too. Last week, the Fort Worth-based hospital system’s ERs and urgent care offices in Fort Worth and Prosper saw more than 900 positive flu cases. Cook Children’s said this year’s flu season is shaping up to surpass the past several years. RSV, Flu COVID-19 Symptoms Experts say it’s important to do your part to stay healthy. “Wash your hands. Use hand sanitizer. The other thing, if you feel bad and you don’t feel just right, and especially if you’re running a fever, you need to stay home,” said Stephen Love, the president and CEO of the DFW Hospital Council. Symptoms of common contagious respiratory illnesses include: Flu fever* or feeling feverish/chills some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. *It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. COVID-19 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing New loss of taste or smell RSV The Source Information in this article comes from statements made by Treetops School International, Godley ISD, Comanche ISD, and Caddo Mills ISD. 3. Moment that sparked alleged cop assault revealed Moment that sparked alleged cop assault revealed The man who is alleged to have instigated the vicious attack on two off-duty police officers taunted the men as one of them lay unconscious on a Sydney street, proclaiming “I could have stomped your head here”, a court has heard. Danai Deneiderhavsein, 18, appeared in Sydney’s Downing Centre Local Court where he was denied bail and told he would remain behind bars on remand after he was one of three men arrested over his alleged role in the assault of two young constables in Newtown last week. The court heard that Mr Deneiderhavsein, who only celebrated his 18th birthday in mid December, is alleged to have set off the violent incident when he shoulder charged one of the men as they were walking down Enmore Rd late on January 22. According to allegations contained in a set of police facts, during the melee, one of the three co-accused, Koby Weaver stomped on the head of one of the police officers with such “extreme force” that he forced the man’s head to “reverberate on the concrete”, instantly knocking him unconscious. Mr Deneiderhavsein on Thursday afternoon lost a bid to be released on bail after his Legal Aid solicitor Timothy Scott argued he could spend 18 months in custody before facing trial, as well as offering a $1000 surety and to live with family in Coffs Harbour. However, Deputy Chief Magistrate Theo Tsavdaridis denied his bid to be freed on conditional liberty, noting the seriousness of the allegations as the court heard the alarming details of the allegations against him. Mr Deneiderhavsein has been charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company, causing grievous bodily harm to a person with intent, and larceny. Camera IconDanai Deneiderhavsein is alleged have played a role in the assault of two police officers in Newtown. Supplied/Seven. Credit: News Corp Australia The court heard that the two young constables, both aged 25, were walking down Enmore Road when they came across three men who were involved in an argument. Mr Deneiderhavsein is alleged to have shoulder-charged one of the men, court documents state. “The facts and the CCTV will highlight the complainants moving down the footpath when this accused (Mr Deneiderhavsein) has moved towards the men in an aggressive manner and dropped his shoulder into (one of the off-duty police officers),” Police prosecutor Adrian Walsh told the court on Thursday. According to court documents seen by NewsWire, the off-duty officers backed away, with one of them holding out his hands saying: “It’s fine, we’re going, just leave it.” Police have arrested two men after an off-duty police officer was knocked to the ground and repeatedly kicked in the head when he tried to calm a group having a verbal argument in Newtown. The three co-accused – Mr Deneiderhavsein, Mr Weaver and Finley Goodwin – are alleged to have been “aggressive” and “worked up”. One of the officers is alleged to have pushed Mr Deneiderhavsein, however both off-duty cops repeatedly attempted to retreat from the other men, according to police. Mr Deneiderhavsein is then accused of punching one of the men, Sgt Walsh told the court, saying all three men launched a “ferocious attack” on the officers. According to the court documents, Mr Deneiderhavsein was punched by one of the officers in self defence. He is also alleged to have punched one of the men to the ground and kicked at him, the court heard. The altercation spilt onto Enmore Road, stopping traffic along the popular late night hotspot. At one point, it is alleged that Mr Weaver stomped on one of the men’s heads, prompting Mr Goodwin and Mr Weaver to flee. The court heard the officer suffered brain bleeding and multiple broken bones in his skull. An off-duty nurse commenced CPR before ambulance arrived, rushing him to hospital. The court heard that Mr Deneiderhavsein at first fled the scene, however returned shortly as the cop lay motionless, and taunted the men by saying: “know you place, I could have stomped your head here”. Camera IconDanai Deneiderhavsein and Koby Weaver were arrested in Mascot last week. NSW Police. Credit: Supplied According to the police fact sheet, Mr Deneiderhavsein “runs back to the road where (one of the cops) is laying motionless and tries to attack” the other man. It’s alleged Mr Deneiderhavsein was only stopped when the other cop pushed him away. Mr Deneiderhavsein was supported in court on Thursday by his mother and aunt as he was told he will remain in custody until at least his next court appearance in March. Mr Weaver was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm after he was arrested alongside Mr Deneiderhavsein at Mascot on Thursday last week. A third man, Finley Goodwin, 22, was arrested in Enmore on Tuesday night and charged with causing grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning actual bodily harm in company of others. 4. Windows 11 Start Menu Phone Integration Now Allows Support for iPhone Windows 11 Start Menu Phone Integration Now Allows Support for iPhone Microsoft is testing a new feature for Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta channels. Previously, the company tested the ability for Android users to access their handsets from the Start menu. Now, it is extending the phone integration to iPhone users. They can access calls and messages from the connected smartphones directly from the PC. It is said to improve the inter-device file-sharing experience. Users are required to be signed in to their computer with a Microsoft account for this feature to work. Windows 11 Start Menu Gets iPhone Support The company stated in a blog post for Windows Insiders that the Start menu phone integration in Windows 11 now works with the iPhone. This feature had been tested for Android last year, with iPhone support expected for a later date. The new feature is currently being rolled out to Windows 11 users running Insider Preview Build 4805 or higher in the Beta channel and Phone Link version 1.24121.30.0 or higher. To use this feature, users need a PC with Bluetooth LE support. They need to be signed in to their computer with a Microsoft account as well. The company plans to incorporate this feature into regular versions of Windows 11 in the coming months. Windows 11 Start Menu iPhone integration makes it easy for users to share files across their PCs and iPhone. Now, connected iPhone users can use the Start menu to access their handsets. They can view battery life and connectivity status of the phones as well as access their messages and calls and monitor their most recent activities, all from the Start menu. Notably, a recent report claimed that Microsoft is testing a new file-sharing UI in Windows 11 which allows users to share files with various applications by just dragging them. Users are reportedly needed to drag the files from File Explorer to the top edge of the screen. Then, a tray opens up showing the different sharing options. Users can drop it on top of the preferred icon to automatically attach the file. For the latest tech news and reviews, follow Gadgets 360 on X, Facebook, WhatsApp, Threads and Google News. 6. Care sector fears tax changes could threaten jobs Care sector fears tax changes could threaten jobs The chair of a care association has said home care companies could make staff redundant to stay afloat following changes made in the Autumn Budget. Prema Fairburn-Dorai, from Suffolk Care Association, said the government’s decision to lower the threshold at which companies start paying National Insurance for staff, from £9,100 a year to £5,000, would be “devastating” for the industry. Analysis by the Nuffield Trust think tank said the changes could cause providers to increase prices for people who pay for their own care, stop accepting council-funded work, or fold. Chancellor Rachel Reeves argued that the decision was “difficult” but necessary to fund public services, including the NHS. Prema Fairburn-Dorai says that the National Insurance changes will add £100,000 to the company’s annual costs [NIKKI FOX/BBC] Ms Fairburn-Dorai, who owns and runs Primary Homecare in Suffolk, said lowering the earnings threshold – which will start in April – would cost an additional £615 per employee and would raise the overall operational costs by 10.2%. The government also announced a rise in National Insurance contributions for employers from 13.8% to 15%. Ms Fairburn-Dorai added the current climate was the “worst situation” her company had ever faced and the directors could not take a dividend or wages because the company could not “afford it”. “It may mean making some staff redundant and slimming the business,” she said. “The more staff you have, the more your overheads are.” She added her company pays staff above the National Living Wage, but for other care companies a simultaneous 6.7% increase in the living wage could force them to “breaking point”. “At least during Covid we had a small buffer, we were helped by government. “This time round, it’s the biggest killer blow, and I think people are still in shock,” she said. Rebecca with her father Rob, whose brain is swollen from repeated head injuries [NIKKI FOX/BBC] Rebecca’s father Rob has encephalitis, a condition that causes the brain to swell due to inflammation. He is looked after by his family, but he needs staff carers to visit three times a day to provide personal care and hoist him into a chair or bed. His daughter said she was not sure where she would be without his staff carers and believed care companies should be exempt from National Insurance rises. “They’re caring for vulnerable people who will struggle to pay any more. “Care is very expensive as it is. There are so many different implications on either the care companies or the people they’re caring for.” Derek says help from staff carers helps take the pressure off his wife who still works from home to support them [NIKKI FOX/BBC] Lyn’s husband Derek, 76, is confined to a bed in his living room as part of his hip is missing. He contracted pneumonia and sepsis in hospital and is too unwell for a hip operation. Lyn worries about their mental health if they were to lose their care package. “I’ve been in a position where I’ve gone to attend Derek and the carers have turned up and I’ve just said I can’t cope, because it’s been a bad day for him and they go ‘leave it, just stand back Lyn, we’ll take over’. “Just knowing I’ve got that, really helps,” she said. Care assistant Rhoda Machenga Mutimkulu has been in the care profession for two years after teaching at a school in China [NIKKI FOX/BBC] Care assistant Rhoda Machenga Mutimkulu said that future support could suffer if social care was not prioritised. “I think if people didn’t have proper care, honestly they would die. Their mental health would go down and they would not be able to have food or medication. Companies such as Primary Homecare are funded largely by council contracts. Beccy Hopfensperger, a councillor and cabinet member for adult social care at Suffolk County Council, said the authority was receiving £16.9m from the government to support the care sector. She added, however, that sum was overshadowed by £35.3m increase in operational costs in the industry, which included rising demand for services, National Insurance increases, wage rises and inflation. She said the council was raising the proportion of council tax ring-fenced for social care by the maximum amount. “I think we have to ask the question of the government as to how they can support the care market and local councils. “We need to take adult social care seriously… the nettle needs to be grasped, we need a long term, sustainable plan for social care, and it needs to happen quickly.” Conservative councillor Beccy Hopfensperger thinks the government’s long term care plan is happening too slowly [NIKKI FOX/BBC] A government review of adult social care will complete in 2028. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Social Care said: “The Casey Commission will work to build consensus around the future of adult social care that is fair and affordable. The first report will be published next year. “We are also taking action now by increasing funding to allow disabled people to stay in their homes.. and making available up to £3.7bn extra for local authorities in 2025-26.” Follow Suffolk news on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram and X. The image shows the handset in a ****** shade and it appears to be covered in a hard case. The rear side of the phone is visible in the image with a horizontally aligned triple rear camera unit. 11. This Stock Is Up 168%, but Wall Street Still Thinks It’s Massively Undervalued. Here’s Why. This Stock Is Up 168%, but Wall Street Still Thinks It’s Massively Undervalued. Here’s Why. It’s not Nvidia. Instead, it’s an old-economy transportation stock in United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL). At the time of this writing, the stock is up 168% over the last 12 months, beating out Nvidia and other high-profile technology names. At this point, investors might think the stock should be pausing in its run-up to take a breather. However, that’s not how Wall Street sees it. Analysts have recently upgraded their price targets on the stock, including one at Morgan Stanley who has a $140 target on it, which would equate to a 36% upside. Here’s why United Airlines is an outstanding stock to buy now. Companies rarely fire on all cylinders, but United Airlines is doing that now. Back on the third-quarter 2024 earnings call, Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella signaled to investors to expect an excellent fourth quarter and start to 2025 when he remarked: “United expanded slower than most during the first three quarters of the year when capacity dynamics were less favorable, but importantly, our timing was right, tilting our growth to the quarter where the industry conditions would be the best.” In a nutshell, United Airlines management was counting on the airline industry to reduce unnecessary capacity over the summer and fall, leading to an improved pricing environment and profit growth. That’s especially relevant for airlines like United and Delta, which tend to maintain their pricing rather than adjusting it to improve load factors (percentage of available seat capacity filled by passengers). The good news is that’s what happened, and the even better news is that the return of corporate travelers and trans-Atlantic travelers (two demographics of relative strength for United Airlines) also creates growth opportunities for United. On the recent earnings call, Nocella noted that “flown business revenue” grew 16% year over year in the fourth quarter. “Premium passenger revenues increased 10% year-over-year and premium cabin unit revenues were positive,” he also noted, “Both trends have persisted throughout the year.” Image source: Getty Images. The improved pricing environment has resulted in a return to growth for United on a key industry metric: total revenue per available seat mile (TRASM). In the quarter, a 1.6% year-over-year increase in TRASM and a 6.2% increase in available seat miles (ASM) resulted in significantly improved operating revenue. That more than offset an increase in operating expenses, leading to a 50.6% increase in operating income. Story Continues Metric Q4 2023 Q1 2024 Q2 2024 Q3 2024 Q4 2024 TRASM growth (YOY) (4.2%) 0.6% (2.4%) (1.6%) 1.6% Operating revenue growth (YOY) 9.9% 9.7% 5.7% 2.5% 7.8% Operating expenses growth (YOY) 14.6% 8.4% 3.1% 4.2% 4.5% Operating income growth (YOY) (27.5%) N/A 27.2% (10%) 50.6% Data source: United Airlines presentations. With excellent momentum leaving 2024 and entering 2025, management expects another year of strong growth. The full-year outlook calls for adjusted diluted earnings per share of $11.50 to $13.50, representing an 8.3% to 27% increase on 2024’s figure of $10.61. That outlook is partly driven by a continuation of the trends discussed above and a return to growth in revenue per available seat mile (RASM) in the domestic market. United increased its domestic capacity by 7.8% in the fourth quarter, and its domestic RASM declined by 1.6%, but Noceall expects domestic RASM to “turn solidly positive in Q1.” Image source: Getty Images. Relatively high interest rates are curtailing discretionary spending in some areas, but that doesn’t appear to be the case for the aviation industry. In addition, the return of higher-margin corporate travel and ongoing growth in the premium market are contributing to United’s strengths. Pricing in the trans-Atlantic travel market is also likely to stay strong as long as there are issues with wide-body airplane deliveries (such as the Boeing 777X, which is now expected to have its first delivery in 2026 compared to an original estimate of 2020). Furthermore, the ultra-low-cost carriers are struggling (Spirit Airlines has filed for bankruptcy), and the market is moving toward United Airlines. Everything points to the airline having another strong year, and management’s forecast of $3.4 billion in free cash flow (FCF) puts it on a forward price-to-FCF multiple of less than 10 for 2025. As always, the travel industry faces cyclical risks, but United’s valuation and its prospects make the risk/reward calculation favorable for investors today. American Airlines collision is the worst U.S. air disaster in years American Airlines collision is the worst U.S. air disaster in years A screen grab captured from a video shows a regional plane collided in midair with a military helicopter and crashed into the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. United States on Jan. 29, 2025. Kennedy Center Cam | Anadolu | Getty Images The midair collision of a military helicopter and an American Airlines regional jetliner on Wednesday night brings to an end a streak of commercial air travel safety that was unknown to previous generations. It is the worst air disaster on U.S. soil in more than 15 years. American Eagle Flight 5342 from Wichita, Kansas was approaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport at an altitude of about 300 feet when a U.S. Army ****** Hawk helicopter carrying three people collided with the commercial jetliner. Sixty-four people — 60 passengers and four crew members — were onboard the American flight. The flight was operated by American subsidiary carrier PSA Airlines. 15. Tesla sees disappointing fourth-quarter earnings amid declining car deliveries | Tesla Tesla sees disappointing fourth-quarter earnings amid declining car deliveries | Tesla Tesla reported earnings for the fourth quarter of 2024 on Wednesday after US stock markets closed, capping a bruising year for the company’s sales but a stellar one for its stock price. The car company reported $0.73 per share and $25.71bn in revenue, slightly below Wall Street analysts predictions of revenue coming in at $27.22bn. Profit also declined year-over-year. Tesla’s shares fell about 4% in after hours trading. Musk presented the Tesla Cybercab, which he called a self-driving taxi, at a demonstration in October, and he said during Wednesday’s earnings call that the model would go into production in 2026, though Tesla has a long history of delayed releases. Musk added that Tesla’s robotaxi business would start in June this year, though what shape it will take is unclear. The company also announced that an advanced version of its Model Y sedan would go on ***** in March. Tesla is under federal investigation for the alleged use of its full self-driving feature in multiple fatal crashes in the US. “This is not some far-off, mythical situation,” he said. “2025 is going to be a pivotal year for Tesla.” Elon Musk’s electric carmaker has struggled in recent years to compete with cheaper alternatives to its electric vehicles from competitors such as China’s BYD, which overtook Tesla in the last quarter of 2023 to become the world’s top electric manufacturer of electric vehicles. Tesla regained the top spot for the first three quarters of 2024, thanks in part to steep price cuts. In its earnings report on Wednesday, Tesla reported 495,570 deliveries for the fourth quarter and 1.8m for the full year. This is the company’s first annual decline, which follows a year of repeatedly failing to meet quarterly delivery targets in 2024. European subsidies for electric cars have declined, hurting Tesla in that market, where October registrations of Tesla vehicles fell by 24%. Some Wall Street analysts expect demand for Teslas to increase after the US Federal Reserve cuts interest rates. Tesla’s disappointing delivery numbers point to its offerings failing to woo new customers last year. The trapezoidal, Hot Wheels-esque Cybertruck, released in November 2023 after lengthy delays and priced at roughly $80,000, has produced sales numbers that have not compensated for the decline in demand for Tesla’s older models. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Nevertheless, Tesla’s stock price has climbed more than 100% over the past year, rising 75% in the past six months alone. Musk’s proximity to Donald Trump has buoyed investors’ confidence in the billionaire’s ability to ensure a friendly regulatory and commercial environment for Tesla, despite congressional Republicans’ vows to do away with lucrative tax credits for electric vehicles. The president, for his part, has threatened tariffs on a wide range of goods, including cars from China, which could strongly favor Tesla. 17. Meta posts robust fourth-quarter earnings amid DeepSeek mania | Meta Meta posts robust fourth-quarter earnings amid DeepSeek mania | Meta After an unprecedented delay, Meta reported earnings more than half an hour after market close on Wednesday. The company posted $48.39bn in fourth-quarter revenue and earnings per share of $8.02, handily beating Wall Street projections of $46.9bn and $6.75 in earnings-per-share. “We continue to make good progress on AI, glasses and the future of social media,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Meta founder and CEO. “I’m excited to see these efforts scale further in 2025.” The day before, an internal memo leaked that said Meta’s Reality Labs division, which oversees its Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses, had grown by nearly 40% and beaten all its sales and revenue targets. “This is going to be a really big year,” Zuckerberg said on a call with analysts. “More than usual, it feels like the trajectory for most of our long-term initiatives are going to be a lot clearer by the end of this year.” Earnings were preceded by a Wall Street Journal report that Donald Trump signed an agreement to call on Meta to pay $25m to settle a lawsuit he filed against the company in 2021. Trump filed the lawsuit after Facebook banned him from the platform following the January 6 Capitol attacks. It is unclear if that caused the delay in reporting earnings. The company was not providing full-year revenue outlook for 2025 but expects “first-quarter total revenue to be in the range of $39.5-41.8bn”, according to a press release. That projection is less than analysts were expecting for the first quarter, which analyst Debra Aho Williamson, founder and chief analyst of Sonata Insights, said was “concerning”. “Meta’s solid revenue growth in the fourth quarter masks a looming problem,” said Williamson. “Its revenue outlook for Q1 was lighter than Wall Street was expecting, and it is planning exorbitant capital expenditures for AI infrastructure in 2025. That adds up to a concerning situation.” Earlier this week, Meta announced it was rolling out a more personalized AI assistant. The tech giant also maintains that Meta AI is the most used virtual assistant, though it is difficult to avoid using it on platforms such as Instagram and WhatsApp by design. Some analysts remain bullish about Meta’s AI capabilities despite the overnight success of ******** competitor DeepSeek. skip past newsletter promotion A weekly dive in to how technology is shaping our lives Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. The comparisons end there, as tonight we expect a doubling down on the AI vision/build-out from both tech stalwarts Meta and Microsoft, which will be another strong sign of confidence this AI revolution is just starting,” said Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities. Microsoft reported its quarterly earnings the same day as Meta. Analysts also expected AI would take a back seat to concerns over Zuckerberg’s decision to get rid of third-party factchecking programs. Forrester VP and research director Mike Proulx said: “Meta’s typical AI progress update will get overshadowed by analyst concerns about advertiser brand safety and user backlash.” However, Zuckerberg said people were interpreting the announcement as a sign that the company “didn’t care about adding context to things” or did not take misinformation on the platform seriously. But he said that was not true. “The community notes system is just going to be more effective than what we had before,” Zuckerberg said on the earnings call. Meta chief financial officer Susan Li said the company had not seen a noticeable impact on advertising in the aftermath of announcing the content policy changes. “We’re continuing to see strong advertiser demand,” Li said. “Our commitment to brand safety is unchanged.” Days after Meta announced it was doing away with its third-party factchecker program, news broke that the company would reduce its workforce by 5% – this time targeting what it called “low performers”. “Despite a rather frenzied start to 2025, Meta’s Q4, 2024 results will likely demonstrate continued company momentum heading into this year,” Proulx of Forrester said. “With yet another 5% reduction in workforce announced, Meta’s 2024 ‘year of efficiency’ gets trumped in 2025 with an apparent year of ‘intensity’.” Zuckerberg said he was also watching to see whether TikTok is banned – which could provide a windfall for Meta products. He said that regardless of what happens he expects Reels to continue to grow on Instagram and Facebook. A leadership shake-up at Reality Labs had been reported. According to the Information, Reality Labs will be brought closer to the main business and be led by Meta’s chief operating officer, Javier Olivan. It is unclear if Reality Labs’ current COO, Dan Reed, would remain at the company. 19. Meta agrees to pay Trump $25m for suspending accounts over Capitol riots | Meta Meta agrees to pay Trump $25m for suspending accounts over Capitol riots | Meta Meta has agreed to pay $25m to settle a lawsuit with Donald Trump. The suit originated in 2021 when Trump sued the social media company for suspending his accounts after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol. The settlement was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and has been confirmed by a Meta spokesperson. The majority of the settlement, $22m, will go toward a fund to pay for Trump’s presidential library, according to the Wall Street Journal. The remainder will pay for legal fees and go to other plaintiffs listed in the case. The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Trump’s lawsuit against Facebook, which is now under parent company Meta, was one of several he brought against social media companies in the wake of January 6. He also sued YouTube, Twitter (now renamed X) and those companies’ executives. A federal judge dismissed the suit against Twitter. The Google suit was closed in 2023, but has the option to be reopened. Shortly after the insurrection at the Capitol, Facebook suspended Trump’s accounts. At the time, the president was using the platform to spread false claims around election fraud and to repeatedly say he won the 2020 election. Facebook broke with its hands-off approach for political leaders and updated its rules to allow for suspensions of lawmakers to be used in “exceptional cases” during periods of civil unrest and violence. Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook CEO, said the company came to the decision because, “we believe the risks of allowing the President to continue to use our service during this ******* are simply too great.” The company gave Trump the maximum penalty under those rules, suspending his Facebook and Instagram accounts indefinitely. “They shouldn’t be allowed to get away with this censoring and silencing, and ultimately, we will win. Our Country can’t take this abuse anymore!” Trump said at the time. He later said, “Next time I’m in the White House there will be no more dinners, at his request, with Mark Zuckerberg and his wife. It will be all business!” A few months later, Facebook downgraded the suspension to two years. And, at the two-year mark in 2023, the company reinstated Trump’s access to the platform. Twitter and YouTube also allowed Trump back onto their platforms. Zuckerberg has now made it onto Trump’s good side. He met with the president several times over the last couple of months and sat front row at the inauguration. Zuckerberg also hosted a ******-tie party for the president during the inaugural celebrations. The settlement discussions over the lawsuit began in November when Zuckerberg dined with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, according to the Wall Street Journal. The president reportedly said the lawsuit had to be dealt with before Zuckerberg could be “brought into the tent”. The Journal reported that Zuckerberg returned to Mar-a-Lago in early January for a day-long mediation. Shortly after that trip to Florida, Zuckerberg made a dramatic public announcement saying Meta was lifting restrictions on its platform and allowing for more political content. Echoing Trump’s words, he said there was far too much censorship online and that “it’s time to get back to our roots”. 21. Toyota sells 10.8 million vehicles in 2024 to remain world’s top-selling automaker Toyota sells 10.8 million vehicles in 2024 to remain world’s top-selling automaker TOKYO (Reuters) -Toyota Motor sold 10.8 million vehicles in 2024, it said on Thursday, remaining the world’s top-selling automaker for a fifth straight year. The Japanese automaker posted a 3.7% drop in global group unit sales last year, including those of compact car maker Daihatsu and truck unit Hino Motors. The decline was largely due to a steep slump in sales in Japan where the automaker faced fallout from governance issues over certification test procedures, especially at Daihatsu. Second-ranked ******* rival Volkswagen Group earlier this month reported a 2.3% decline in unit sales last year to just over 9 million vehicles, as it seeks to cut costs at home and fight a price war in key market China. Sales of Toyota’s parent-only vehicles, which include those of its namesake and Lexus brands, fell 1.4% from a year earlier in 2024 to 10.2 million vehicles due to a double-digit decline in Japan. While Toyota sold a record number of cars overall, thanks in part due to demand for its hybrid vehicles in the United States, it saw unit sales in China decline by 6.9% amid heavy price competition in the world’s top car market. Of its parent-only sales, gasoline-electric hybrids made up a record 40.8%. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 1.4%. (Reporting by Daniel Leussink; Editing by Lincoln Feast.) It followed reports of the alleged assault, when no injuries were reported. Sailor, who represented the Broncos and Dragons during his 222-game NRL career, was taken to Day Street Police Station and reportedly hit with a string of charges. Sailor was one of the NRL’s most damaging wingers early in his career, tallying 17 games for Queensland, 22 matches for the Kangaroos and 189 games for the Brisbane Broncos. No stranger to controversy, he then crossed codes, playing 37 Tests for the Wallabies, before a drug ban for testing positive to ******** ended his time in rugby union. After a two-year ban, Sailor returned to rugby league, ending his career with the Dragons. However, he was critical of the club in April as he opened up about the “disgusting” treatment of son Tristan, who was unceremoniously dumped by the club at the end of the 2020 season after just five games for the team. A fortnight later, Sailor was charged with ******* assault, but was found not guilty in 2022. It saw Sailor attempt to rebuild his life and rugby league career, making a move to Brisbane. Having forged a career in the media, Sailor announced his retirement from Triple M “effective immediately” in July last year. 25. Lay’s Potato Chip Recall Clocks In At The FDA’s Highest Risk Level: What To Know Lay’s Potato Chip Recall Clocks In At The FDA’s Highest Risk Level: What To Know The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has updated a recall of Lay’s potato chips across Oregon and Washington and labeled the affected product with its highest risk level. According to the FDA, the recall was initiated on December 13, 2024, and the risk level was assessed as a “Class I” alert on January 27, 2025. The reason for the recall is the potential undeclared presence of milk, a known allergen, in the affected products. The voluntary recall was announced by the Frito-Lay company in December. According to the agency’s website, the FDA assigns Class I designation to recall situations in which there is “reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.” In this case, anyone with a milk allergy or sensitivity should avoid consuming the affected chips. Per the FDA’s enforcement report, 6,344 bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips were recalled. Those affected had both a Guaranteed Fresh date of February 11, 2025 and a manufacturing code of either 6462307xx or 6463307xx. In a December 16, 2024 press release, Frito-Lay clarified that no allergic reactions related to the recall had been reported. Read more: 7 Must-Have Canned Foods And 7 To Avoid In Your Pantry What The Frito-Lay Recall Means Person eating Lay’s potato chips from bag – Ekaterina79/Getty Images This is not the first recall in recent months related to undeclared allergens. Also in January, Quaker recalled boxes of its pancake and waffle mix due to potential milk allergens, and Paras Golden Raisins were recalled over undeclared sulfites, a chemical compound that can cause allergic reactions. Milk is one of the nine “major food allergens” identified by the FDA, which companies are required to clearly label on their products, in accordance with the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA). Symptoms of food allergies can include hives, cramps, facial swelling, difficulty breathing, and even loss of consciousness. Only the specified 13-ounce bags of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips have been recalled; other Lay’s products are unaffected. Customers who suspect they have been affected should check their products for the stated date and manufacturing code, and dispose immediately of any contaminated bags.
