These Altcoins Are Teetering on the Edge of a Bearish Breakdown These Altcoins Are Teetering on the Edge of a Bearish Breakdown The cryptocurrency market faces mounting pressure, with altcoins at pivotal levels following a week of volatility. Ethereum finds crucial support at $3,190 but risks a deeper decline if it fails to hold this level. XRP eyes a breakout above $3, while TRX struggles to break resistance, holding key support at $0.23. Are you looking for actionable trade ideas to navigate the current market volatility? Unlock access to InvestingPro’s AI-selected stock winners using this link. The cryptocurrency market, after a ******* of bullish momentum, is now in a phase of price consolidation. With the total market cap stabilizing around $3.5 trillion, last week’s trading saw a surge of exits, signaling potential trouble ahead. This shift triggered sharp sell-offs at the start of the new week, with cryptocurrencies feeling the pressure. The sudden rise of China’s AI model, DeepSeek, spooked tech stocks in the U.S., and given the strong correlation between tech and crypto, it sent digital assets into a tailspin. Adding to the market’s unease, global sentiment faltered ahead of the Fed’s , with risk appetite on the decline. Yet, as the made its move, the mood shifted, and the market regained a bullish tilt, partly fueled by Powell’s moderate stance on cryptocurrencies. As the week unfolded, led the recovery, with price action that was uncertain, yet promising for the longer term. The downside risks seem to have softened, but several altcoins are still at critical crossroads. Here’s a look at four altcoins that are teetering on the edge of a bearish breakdown. 1. Ethereum Bounces Back from January Support has seen significant consolidation around the $3,300 mark before its recent drop. A triangle formation on the daily chart pointed to an imminent breakout in either direction. After the negative impact of DeepSeek, ETH fell below $3,300, then broke $3,200 with strong volume. The decline continued to $3,000, hitting the Fibonacci 0.618 retracement level. However, aggressive buying from this support zone confirmed $3,000 as a strong demand level, much like the January 13th sell-off. Currently, ETH is finding support between $3,190 and $3,200, a crucial range that has acted as a key support level throughout January. As long as Ethereum closes above $3,190 on a daily basis, it could continue its recovery, with $3,300 serving as the next key resistance. A breakout above this could open up further gains toward $3,600–$3,700, breaking the consolidation phase that’s lingered since December. However, failing to hold the $3,190 level could reignite bearish pressure, with a break below $3,000 likely to test deeper support at $2,700 (Fibonacci 0.786). 2. Ripple Seeks a New Breakout Point started the year strong, holding at $2 before entering a correction phase in December. Its second upward phase in January led it to test resistance around $3.3. Yet, since mid-January, XRP has been on a downward trend, maintaining support at $3. The first day of this week saw a dip to $2.7, creating a prime buying opportunity, and aligning with the support trend line from the last rally. After this brief pullback, XRP is now attempting to regain momentum above $3. Despite a failed breakout attempt earlier this week, XRP is still in an uptrend, holding above its short-term support line. If this pattern continues, XRP’s next target could be the $4 region. But if XRP fails to hold the $3 level, daily closes below this point could invalidate the bullish setup and bring $2.88 and $2.5 back into focus. 3. TRON: Will It Violate the Rising Channel Again? experienced a meteoric rise last month, doubling its price before returning to its long-term rising channel. Despite the recent market-wide sell-off, TRX held steady at the $0.23 support level, staying within its short-term trading range. However, its bearish bias persists. The immediate resistance stands at $0.25, and if TRX can break above this level with volume, it could spark a new uptrend. If the price stays below $0.25, we’re likely to see continued sideways action with a bearish tilt. The first support remains at $0.23, and a breakdown could pull the price to $0.21, aligning with the mid-line of the rising channel. Short-term indicators, like the Stochastic RSI, suggest the downtrend could persist. However, if buying volume picks up at $0.23, a new bullish trend could emerge. On the flip side, a drop below $0.20 would raise the risk of further downside for TRX. 4. Chainlink: Searching for a New Direction After peaking at $30 in December, has since fluctuated, dropping to $19 before finding support at its 3-month EMA, a potential dynamic support point. This sparked a rally, which met resistance at $26. Though LINK has been on a downward trajectory over the past week, it’s showing signs of recovery, moving above the 21-day EMA at $23.8. If LINK holds this level, it could test the $25 resistance in the coming days. To turn its outlook bullish, LINK needs to reclaim and close above $25, with strong confirmation. Success here could see LINK testing resistance levels at $26.6 and $29, possibly accelerating bullish momentum. *** How are the world’s top investors positioning their portfolios for next year? Lake Erie ice shoved onto shore in 1910 Lake Erie ice shoved onto shore in 1910 CATAWBA ISLAND – The Lake Erie ice heave was remarkable enough in 1910 to inspire this class of students to have their photo taken in front of it. This photo is from the Catawba Island Historical Society, found by trustee Craig Koerpel. Students in front of ice heave, 1910. He explained how this is a Lake Erie “ice shove,” an example of uncommon ice-linked behavior that was captured for posterity at the Union Chapel Museum. “Shoves” or “heaves” occur when a strong onshore wind continuously blows large pieces of ice against the shore. When chunks of frozen water hit immovable land, the slabs slide up and over one another to create a tall, jagged wall. Seeing this phenomenon firsthand has long been a valued subject of school field trips. This photo has a note written on it: “Pupils of Miss Lecrone at Catawba Island, around 1910.” “The photo is all we have. So there isn’t anything else about Miss Lecrone,” Koerpel said. “I can’t even tell you if it was in Port Clinton or out on Catawba — but I would guess it was Port Clinton.” The Catawba Island Historical Society is based at the Union Chapel, 5258 E. JackJumpers’ title defence in tatters as Hawks roll on JackJumpers’ title defence in tatters as Hawks roll on Tasmania’s NBL title defence is over after they suffered a crushing 102-78 loss to the ladder-leading Illawarra Hawks in Hobart. The injury-hit JackJumpers entered Thursday night’s match at MyState Bank Arena knowing they needed to win their final three games to have any hope of reaching the play-in tournament. But the Hawks led from start to finish in a dominant display, with Sam Froling scoring 16 of his 18 points in the first half to set up the win. Tyler Harvey (15 points), Mason Peatling (12 points), William Hickey (12 points), Todd Blanchfield (12 points) and Trey Kell (10 points) all reached double figures in an even team performance from Illawarra. The result improved the Hawks’ record to 18-9, putting them within touching distance of finishing in top spot for the first time in the club’s history. Illawarra finish their season with games against the Breakers and Kings. The JackJumpers (12-15) enjoyed an eight-match winning streak during the middle part of the season, but have lost seven of their past eight games to slip out of the finals mix. Milton Doyle (17 points) led the way for Tasmania, with Jordon Crawford (16) and Clint Steindl (13) the only other JackJumpers players to reach double figures. “They’re really good. I hope they get into the grand final and I hope JT (Hawks coach Justin Tatum) gets coach of the year,” JackJumpers coach Scott Roth said. “We’re obviously not playing very well just in general, but it is what it is at this point. “We’ve just got to keep battling and keep our heads up. “You have the highs and lows in sport, and this is a low. But it’s also a great character builder for our organisation.” The JackJumpers were ice-cold from the perimeter in the opening quarter, missing all eight of their attempts from long range on the way to a 21-13 deficit at the break. Doyle caught fire with three triples in the second term on the way to 15 for the half. But 12 points to Froling for the term and nine from Blanchfield ensured the visitors entered the half-time break with a dominant 52-34 advantage. It was more of the same in the second half as the Hawks were able to answer every challenge Tasmania threw at them. Steindl scored eight quick points to start the third quarter, and Tasmania were finally able to quell Froling’s influence as the margin was reduced to 12 points. But the Hawks were able to pull away again, with big triples to Harvey and Kell early in the last quarter killing off the contest. Hawks coach Justin Tatum was happy with the way his team bounced back from last week’s shock loss to last-placed Cairns. “I’m pretty happy with it. Our effort level was high, through the roof. Our attention to detail was great,” Tatum said. “I still have some things to complain about, but our team got better this week. “We were determined to play better today.” Source link #JackJumpers #title #defence #tatters #Hawks #roll Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Congo says French foreign minister arrives in Kinshasa Congo says French foreign minister arrives in Kinshasa KINSHASA (Reuters) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot has arrived in Congo’s capital Kinshasa, an official at the presidency said on Thursday, as Rwanda-backed rebels consolidated control of Goma in the east of the African country. “The Minister of Foreign Affairs of France will be received in the next few minutes by the president,” said Giscard Kusema, deputy director of press for President Felix Tshisekedi. A French diplomat confirmed that Barrot had landed in Kinshasa, days after M23 rebels, with support from Rwandan troops, marched into Goma and were continuing their offensive southwards in the biggest escalation since 2012 of a decades-old conflict. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. France’s foreign ministry declined to comment. Rioters stormed foreign embassies including the French mission in Kinshasa on Tuesday, drawing tear gas from police, in an eruption of protests over the conflict in the east. Barrot said in parliament on Wednesday that there had to be diplomatic solution to the crisis and that Paris would do all it could to help mediation efforts between the two sides. Rwanda has drawn an international backlash over its actions in Congo, with the United Nations warning the violence could spill over into a regional war. Switch’s Japan eShop will no longer accept foreign cards or PayPal to ‘prevent fraudulent use’ Switch’s Japan eShop will no longer accept foreign cards or PayPal to ‘prevent fraudulent use’ Nintendo has announced that it will soon stop accepting payments on its Japanese eShop from credit cards or PayPal accounts issued overseas. In a statement on the company’s support page, Nintendo said the new policy will start on March 25 and is designed to fight “fraudulent use”. “In order to prevent fraudulent use, the Nintendo eShop and My Nintendo Store for Japan will stop accepting credit cards issued overseas and PayPal accounts opened overseas from Tuesday, March 25, 2025,” the statement reads. “For customers who have previously used overseas-issued credit cards or PayPal accounts opened overseas, we ask that you please use other payment methods, such as credit cards issued in Japan, from now on. “We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.” 「日本国内向け『ニンテンドーeショップ』『My Nintendo Store』における海外発行クレジットカードおよび海外で開設されたPayPalアカウントの取り扱い終了について」を掲載しました。 pic.twitter.com/aY17lMTOfj — 任天堂サポート (@nintendo_cs) January 30, 2025 While Nintendo doesn’t specify what it means by “fraudulent use”, the multi-region nature of the Switch means players can easily create extra accounts on their console, assign them to different countries then view that country’s eShop. Some players based outside of Japan prefer to buy their games from the Japanese eShop, either because they aren’t yet available in their own country, or because the exchange rate sometimes makes it cheaper to buy from there. Nintendo’s new policy means players who have been paying for these eShop purchases with a credit card or PayPal account set up in their own country will soon no longer be able to. As such, they’ll need to look for alternative payment methods, such as buying prepaid Japanese Nintendo eShop cards online, which let them redeem a code to top up their eShop funds without having to disclose their location. MAGA diehards learn their votes have consequences MAGA diehards learn their votes have consequences John Silvercloud/Shutterstock; Evan Al-Amin/Shuttestock On Monday night, President Donald Trump caused his MAGA base to start questioning their allegiance when his administration announced an abrupt halt of federal grants and loans that many Republican voters realized they’ve been relying on. Today, the White House rescinded the executive order its directive that froze trillions of dollars in federal funding — an attempt to purge the government of waste and the “woke” ideology Trump has been railing against — shortly before a federal judge temporarily blocked it, the New York Times reports. Between his desire to slash the federal budget and the mass deportation plans he already has underway, many MAGA supporters were still in Trump’s corner until some began to realize how detrimental his policies (and their support of him) could be to their lives. From a xenophobic Republican’s offensive comments in support of Trump’s policies that are separating families at the border to an elderly woman realizing that her vote for Trump could mean she loses her food stamps to a woman leaving her husband after he voted for Trump, these MAGA die-hards are starting to seriously regret their votes. Regardless of your political affiliation or how you cast your ballot last November, you deserve access to social safety nets and federal programs, but there is no denying that actions have consequences. As the internet loves to point out, you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Keep scrolling to experience the catharsis of people finding out that a vote for Trump might have really been a vote against themselves! x.com April Martinson (@hot_take_melody) was fired from her job at Bidadoo, a global remarketing company based in Kent, Washington, after making offensive comments about immigrants being separated from their families because of Trump’s new policies in a now-viral TikTok video. x.com Trump voter Lucinda Krosnicki posted a series of messages on X on January 28, decrying Trump’s new federal funding policy that will take “away food stamps and WIC,” writing that the MAGA leader is only fighting for billionaires. She later posted that she is an elderly woman and will be impacted by losing food stamps if Trump’s freeze on federal funding stands. x.com A woman on TikTok said that she left her husband after he voted for Trump and joked that she is now planning to sleep with all of his liberal friends. www.reddit.com Posted on the LeopardsAteMyFace subreddit, someone from conservative Reddit complained that the churches they work for have “about a million dollars in projects between all the churches, through federal grants,” and they won’t be able to pay the bills if the federal grant money doesn’t come in now that Trump has instituted the funding freeze. Screenshot via Blluesky @meteofur.bsky.social Trans Bluesky user Ashe wrote that their conservative parents own a business writing federal grants, so now that Trump has put a freeze on them, all of the work has dried up. “The leopards are having an absolute FEAST,” Ashe posted. Screenshot via Bluesky @coriseasinger.bsky.social On Bluesky, Cori Classen wrote that her college’s dean was sure “was going to be a good thing for out college” and wondered if she should “laugh in her face” now that Trump froze federal student loans. x.com Yesterday, Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry took to X and posted a link to an article about Trump shutting down FEMA to do a review, writing that Trump understands “that we have regulated ourselves into disfunction in this country,” but people on social media were quick to point out that Lousiana is one of three red states that receive more FEMA assistance than any other state. Keira Walsh: Chelsea agree £800,000 deal with Barcelona for England midfielder Keira Walsh: Chelsea agree £800,000 deal with Barcelona for England midfielder Chelsea have agreed an £800,000 deal for England midfielder Keira Walsh to join on the Women’s Super League’s transfer deadline day. Barcelona had been unwilling to sell but it is believed Chelsea’s bid was accepted late on Wednesday evening and Walsh is due in London for a medical on Thursday. The 27-year-old, who left Manchester City to join Barcelona for a then world record fee of £400,000 in 2022, was keen to return to England to be close to family. The fee of £800,000, plus add-ons, is under the world record transfer Chelsea paid for USA defender Naomi Girma earlier this month. Chelsea’s interest in Walsh has been long-standing and the club have been looking to bolster their midfield options since the summer. It is believed Walsh told Barcelona in September that she did not wish to extend her contract. Her current deal was due to expire in six months and Barcelona were likely to lose her on a free this summer. Arsenal had maintained their interest but Walsh’s preference has always appeared to lean towards Chelsea. It is another huge signing for Chelsea with Walsh becoming the second most expensive female footballer in the world. During her time at Barcelona, Walsh has won back-to-back league titles and the Champions League. How to Build The Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon in The Tomb Zombies in ****** Ops 6 How to Build The Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon in The Tomb Zombies in ****** Ops 6 ****** Ops 6 Season 2 takes us to The Tomb, where we can get the Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon. It’s a cold killer, and perfectly devastating on its own. But we need the Staff of Ice for a different purpose, especially if you want to complete the map’s Easter Egg. The Tomb is another fascinating round-based map in an already stellar selection of maps. ****** Ops 6 was already smashing it with CoD Zombies and going a long way to erase bad memories from recent years. Then The Tomb was released in Season 2 to give us more Easter Eggs than a bunny can handle; along with new weapons, secrets, and more. The Staff of Ice is one of these additions, and the Wonder Weapon is a multi-functional necessity I’ll help you get. How To Get Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon in The Zombies Where the magic happens. Credit to Activision You must solve several puzzles, gather the Staff of Ice pieces, take them into the Dark Aether Nexus, and assemble the Staff of Ice in The Tomb Zombies. To make this easier, I’ve tried to dissect the process into easy-to-read instructions so you know what you’re doing every step of the way in ****** Ops 6: Start a game of The Tomb. Acquire Points, unlock doors, and eventually reach the objective room requiring you to Open the Doorway to Nowhere. Hold down the reload button next to the pedestal when prompted. Doing so puts an Amulet down and opens a portal. Purple Crystals appear all over the map. Reach Round 8, kill the Shock Mimic, and claim its Monocle. You now need to find a Purple Crystal hanging down in one of several rooms. If there isn’t one in the Neolithic Catacombs room with a Workbench and a mural featuring a hunter holding a bow, you need to find where the nearest overhead crystal is, shoot it, and keep repeating this until it appears in the room with the mural and Workbench. This should now cause symbols/glyphs to appear on the hunter mural. The symbols are in numerical order and resemble Roman Numerals. Shoot the symbols in numerical order, and fight off the waves of Zombies that spawn as a result. If you’re successful, claim the Staff of Ice part. Once they do, head to the Tombs and locate a bull mural. Again, it has an empty cradle on the wall opposite it, and you need to find and shoot nearby lanterns until the Purple Crystal spawns next to the bull and makes symbols/glyphs appear on it too. Now repeat steps 12-13. With both murals done, go into the Portal I mentioned in step 4, and find the rock formation—next to the Pack-A-Punch Machine—with two big holes on either side and a smaller hole in the middle. Hold the reload button on the smaller circle in the middle. A new wave-based onslaught begins and you need to fend off teeming hoards of the undead who try to stop the formation of the staff—this should take about one minute. When it’s ready, pick up the staff! What Does The Staff of Ice Wonder Weapon Do in ****** Ops 6 Zombies? The Staff of Ice is a powerful Wonder Weapon that can freeze enemies, deal tons of AoE damage, revive teammates, and is an integral part of The Tomb Zombies Easter Egg. You can get the Staff of Ice and use it as a weapon to survive many rounds in The Tomb. But like the Liberty Falls Jet Gun, this Wonder Weapon is used en route to completing the Tomb’s Easter Egg. Hopefully, I’ve cracked it and put you on the right track. We have many more ****** Ops 6 guides such as unlocking the PPSh-41, Cypher 091, and Feng 82 guns, and disabling crossplay in Ranked. Is AT&T Inc. (T) Unstoppable Dividend Stock to Invest In?
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Is AT&T Inc. (T) Unstoppable Dividend Stock to Invest In? Is AT&T Inc. (T) Unstoppable Dividend Stock to Invest In? We recently published a list of 8 Unstoppable Dividend Stocks to Invest in. In this article, we are going to take a look at where AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) stands against other unstoppable dividend stocks to invest in. On December 27, the Magnificent Seven tech stocks declined by 3.1%, driven by the rising popularity of China’s DeepSeek, which uses cost-effective technology, tempering expectations for increased AI-related spending. The broader market also dropped 1.5%. While the long-term potential of DeepSeek remains uncertain, the market’s nervous response highlights the fragile state of the two-year-old bull market. Stocks, which recently reached record highs, are now trading at price-to-earnings ratios not seen since the 1990s. According to analysts, for investors seeking stability amid market volatility, dividend stocks may offer an appealing alternative to bonds, providing strong yields without some of the recent challenges facing the fixed-income market. Dividend stocks underperformed in 2024 as the ongoing AI ***** and growing enthusiasm for tech stocks drew investor attention elsewhere. The Dividend Aristocrats index, which tracks the performance of companies with at least 25 consecutive years of dividend growth, trailed the broader market during the year. Despite this, analysts are confident about the long-term prospects of dividend stocks. Their optimism stems from the strong cash reserves held by many US companies, which provide a solid foundation for maintaining or increasing dividend payments. According to the Wells Fargo Investment Institute, large-cap US companies collectively hold over $2.4 trillion in cash, offering ample potential to initiate or boost dividends. READ ALSO: 12 Best High Dividend Stocks Under $100 Dividend growth stocks often appeal to investors because they signal a company’s long-term commitment and financial strength. Regular dividend payments typically require profitability, reliable returns, and steady cash flow, making them a strong indicator of a company’s quality. Companies that consistently raise their dividends demonstrate their ability to maintain earnings, which often reflects greater resilience during economic or market challenges. Research shows that dividend-paying companies within the broader market have historically been more profitable than those that do not distribute dividends. In line with this investor preference, many US companies have been increasing their payouts and establishing dividend policies. By September 30, 2024, approximately 80% of companies in the Index were paying dividends, a figure unchanged from a decade ago. Notably, the technology sector now accounts for 24% of these dividend-paying companies, up from 13% ten years prior, according to Franklin Templeton. Other sectors, such as healthcare and industrials, have also seen a rise in the number of companies offering dividends. Story Continues Since the beginning of 2025, the broader market has experienced a gain of just 2.88%. In this context, UBS has highlighted high-quality stocks that are less likely to reduce their current dividend payouts compared to peers. The firm predicts a 22.9% overall likelihood of dividend cuts across regions and sectors, with the US emerging as the most secure market, showing only a 6.2% chance of reductions. In addition, most sectors in the US demonstrate relative stability. Japan, however, stands out as the most promising region for dividend growth, with an expected growth rate of 9.9%. Companies that prioritize increasing their dividends tend to have characteristics that position them for strong future performance. Over time, firms that regularly raise or initiate dividends have outperformed other market sectors, delivering higher annual returns with less volatility. For this article, we first used a stock screener to identify stocks that have reported positive returns in 2024 so far. From this selection, we chose dividend stocks with 12-month gains of at least 30%, as of the close of January 27. The stocks were then arranged in ascending order of their 12-month gain. We also considered hedge fund sentiment around each stock using Insider Monkey’s data for Q3 2024. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points. (see more details here). Is AT&T Inc. (T) Unstoppable Dividend Stock To Invest In? A person in the field using their smartphone to connect to wireless communication services. 12-Month Return as of January 27: 40.4% AT&T Inc. ‘We must exit this road to ruin’ ‘We must exit this road to ruin’ Earth has reached another climate milestone. Our planet had its second straight warmest year on record in 2024 to cap a decade of record heat. What’s happening? The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has made it official: 2024 was the warmest year on the planet for both the United States and globally. According to NOAA, the global surface temperature was 2.32 degrees above the 20th-century average, topping 2023, the next-warmest year, by 0.18 degrees. This means the 10 warmest years on record have all happened in the past decade. The United States also experienced record warmth last year. The contiguous U.S. also saw unprecedented warmth in 2024, with average temperatures soaring almost 4 degrees above normal — a record-breaking year for the nation. Seventeen states hit record highs, and just two avoided ranking among their top five warmest years. “This is climate breakdown, in real time,” U.N. Secretary General António Guterres said, per the Guardian. “We must exit this road to ruin and we have no time to lose. In 2025, countries must put the world on a safer path by dramatically slashing emissions and supporting the transition to a renewable future. It is essential, and it is possible.” Why is a record-warm year important for our planet? World Weather Attribution’s report, When Risks Become Reality: Extreme Weather In 2024, sounds the alarm about the link between unprecedented heat last year and extreme weather events. “Extreme weather reached dangerous new heights in 2024,” it reads. “This year’s record-breaking temperatures fueled unrelenting heatwaves, drought, wildfire, storms and floods that killed thousands of people and forced millions from their homes. This exceptional year of extreme weather shows how dangerous life has already become with 1.3 degrees Celsius of human-induced warming, and highlights the urgency of moving away from planet-heating fossil fuels as quickly as possible.” Watch now: Did you know your sauce packets could help save the planet? A joint report by World Weather Attribution and Climate Central revealed that in 2024, an overheated planet added 41 extra days of dangerous heat. WWA has found a warming world’s “fingerprints” on many recent extreme weather events. What’s being done about record-breaking global warmth? WWA recommends some resolutions for 2025 to help mitigate future warming. They include a more rapid move away from dirty energy, better real-time reporting of heat casualties, and increasing financing for underdeveloped countries that are many times the most vulnerable to the impacts of an overheating planet. There is hope on the horizon for speeding up the shift toward cleaner, renewable energy sources. The price of solar power has been plummeting, dropping 43% in just a decade. Scientists are working on record-breaking technology that could cut the costs of solar power even more. Yen edges up against euro, dollar as rate outlooks diverge Yen edges up against euro, dollar as rate outlooks diverge By Wayne Cole SYDNEY (Reuters) – The yen made broad gains on Thursday as Japan looks on track to keep raising interest rates while others cut, with the European Central Bank seen certain to deliver the latest in a series of policy easings later in the day. The yen was the notable mover in currency markets, with the dollar down 0.6% to 154.35 yen and the euro falling a similar amount to 160.62 yen. The single currency dipped 0.14% against the dollar to $1.0407 after data showed Germany’s economy shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the dollar index was little changed at 107.96 after ticking up slightly overnight when the Federal Reserve paused it easing cycle. The index tracks the U.S. currency against six major peers. Markets are more than fully priced for the ECB to trim rates by 25 basis points to 2.75% later on Thursday, with even a small chance of a 50 basis points reduction given the weakness of the euro zone economy. “The euro area’s inflationary pulse is evaporating, and the risk of a sustained inflation undershoot is material,” warned analysts at ANZ. “The complex economic and political challenges facing the euro area’s largest economies increase the onus on the ECB to support growth.” This is one reason markets are priced for further ECB cuts in March, April and June, with about 90 basis points of easing implied for 2025. Were ECB President Christine Lagarde to affirm such a dovish outlook at her media conference later Thursday, it could pile fresh pressure on the euro. In contrast, Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino said on Thursday that Japan’s central bank would continue to raise interest rates if the economy and prices move in line with the bank’s forecasts. PARSING POWELL The dollar briefly popped higher overnight when the Fed dropped a reference to making “progress” on inflation, which was taken as hawkish. Yet, Chair Jerome Powell used his media conference to say progress was still being made and rates were “meaningfully” above neutral, implying there was still plenty of scope to cut. As a result, Fed fund futures still imply around 48 basis points of easing this year, compared to 49 basis points earlier in the week. The next move is not expected until June. Data on U.S. advance GDP due later on Thursday are expected to show a modest pullback in growth to an annualised 2.6% in the fourth quarter, though forecasts range widely from 1.7% to 3.2%, suggesting some chance of a market-moving surprise. The Fed’s pause came as Canada and Sweden both cut rates by a quarter point overnight, but removed guidance on future easing, noting uncertainty about U.S. tariff policy. Story Continues Howard Lutnick, U.S. President Donald Trump’s nominee to run the Commerce Department, said on Wednesday that Canada and Mexico could avoid looming U.S. tariffs if they act swiftly to close their borders to fentanyl. Going the other way on rates, Brazil’s central bank hiked by a full percentage point to 13.25% overnight and flagged more to come. The attraction of such high yields has seen the real rally around 5% since the start of the year. Elsewhere, the pound was steady at $1.2446, while the *********** dollar fetched $0.623, also flat on the day. (Reporting by Wayne Cole in Sydney. Additional reporting by Harry Robertson in London. Consent for Rosebank and Jackdaw fields was unlawful Consent for Rosebank and Jackdaw fields was unlawful James Cook Scotland Editor, BBC News BBC A worker inside Shell’s Jackdaw gas platform in Aker’s yard at Verdal, Norway A court has ruled that consent for two new Scottish oil and gas fields was granted unlawfully and their owners must seek fresh approval from the *** government before drilling can begin. The written judgement on the Rosebank and Jackdaw fields came after a case brought by environmental campaigners, Uplift and Greenpeace, at the Court of Session in Edinburgh. In his judgement, Lord Ericht said a more detailed assessment of the fields’ environmental impact was required, taking into account the effect on the climate of burning any fossil fuels extracted. He said work on both fields could continue while the new information was gathered but no oil and gas could be extracted unless fresh approval was granted. Shell’s Jackdaw gas field in the North Sea was originally approved by the previous *** Conservative government, and the industry regulator, in summer 2022. Permission for the Rosebank oil development, 80 miles west of Shetland in the North Atlantic, was granted in autumn 2023. In a 57-page judgement, Lord Ericht wrote that there was a public interest in having the decision “remade on a lawful basis” because of the effects of climate change – which he said outweighed the interests of the developers. Map showing the Rosebank and Jackdaw gas fields Tessa Khan, executive director of Uplift, welcomed the ruling as “common sense” and said the government should now refuse approval for both projects. “The climate science is crystal clear that we can’t create new oil and gas fields if we’re going to stay within safe climate thresholds,” she said. The companies involved insist their projects are vital for *** energy security and should be allowed to proceed. Rosebank contains an estimated 300 million to 500 million barrels of oil, making it the largest known untapped field in *** waters. Norwegian state energy giant Equinor has an 80% stake in Rosebank with Aberdeen-based Ithaca Energy owning the rest. The plan was for oil to be taken off by tanker and sold on the international market, with some gas being piped to Shetland. Production was scheduled to begin at Jackdaw in 2026 and at Rosebank in 2026/27. See drone footage of Jackdaw gas platform under construction As part of the original consenting process, environmental impact assessments were carried out to identify, describe and assess “the direct and indirect effects” of the projects. Those assessments took into account emissions generated by the process of extracting oil and gas but not the greenhouse gases which would be released when those fossil fuels were eventually burned – known as “downstream” or “Scope 3” emissions. But last June, in a dispute about oil wells near London’s Gatwick Airport, the *** Supreme Court ruled that environmental impact assessments must also include downstream emissions. Now Lord Ericht has ruled that the decision in that case – Finch v Surrey County Council – should apply retrospectively to Rosebank and Jackdaw. As a result, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and the regulator, the North Sea Transition Authority (formerly known as the Oil and Gas Authority), must reconsider whether or not to grant consent, taking into account those downstream emissions. Charlie Kronick of Greenpeace said granting approval would be inconsistent with meeting the ***’s national and international targets to reduce carbon emissions. “There is no way that we can meet those targets by approving new oil and gas,” he said. Oil firms insist there will still be domestic demand for fossil fuels whether it is produced in *** waters or not, arguing that importing gas would produce higher emissions. The *** government has been considering how to calculate downstream emissions, and a consultation on the subject had been due to conclude in the spring. In a statement, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero said the consultation was now complete and it would respond to it “as soon as possible…to provide stability for industry, support investment, protect jobs and deliver economic growth.” “Our priority,” said the statement, “is to deliver a fair, orderly and prosperous transition in the North Sea in line with our climate and legal obligations, which drives towards our clean energy future of energy security, lower bills, and good, long-term jobs.” A spokesperson for Shell said swift action was needed from the government to grant fresh approval for Jackdaw, adding: “Today’s ruling rightly allows work to progress on this nationally-important energy project while new consents are sought.” Equinor said it welcomed the ruling and promised to continue to work closely with government to progress it. “Rosebank is critical for the ***’s economic growth,” a spokesperson said, adding that it was investing £2.2bn in the project and a pause would have meant job losses and a cut in tax income for the Treasury. Shell said the ruling would allow work to progress on the project In court, counsel for Shell had argued that quashing consent could threaten the overall viability of Jackdaw, not just costing the company and its partners huge sums of money but also impacting *** energy security, the transition to renewable energy and the wider economy. However, Lord Ericht concluded that these were not matters for him, writing: “The question for me is not whether the projects should go ahead, but whether the unlawful decisions should be retaken in a lawful manner.” He also rejected arguments from the companies that they had acted in good faith because the *** government had told them there was no need to include downstream emissions in their environmental assessments. “Shell, Equinor and Ithaca,” wrote Lord Ericht, “knew or ought to have known at the time that the consents were granted that the law was uncertain.” Shell has already spent £800m on Jackdaw, which it says will employ “at least 1,000” people between 2023 and 2025, and account for about 6% of future North Sea gas production, providing enough energy to heat 1.4 million homes, and reducing the need to import energy from abroad. The platform is currently in a fabrication yard at Verdal near Trondheim, Norway and is due to be lifted onto a barge and towed into place in the next few months. BBC News visited the yard earlier this month and witnessed engineers making final adjustments to a vast and complex array of shining pipes, valves and dials. On a misty and mild winter’s day, the platform loomed up beneath a giant red and white crane, boasting a gleaming aluminium helipad and a bright orange lifeboat. The structure to support the platform, known as a jacket, is already on the seabed 150 miles east of Aberdeen. Several Norwegians we spoke to on our brief visit to Verdal, some 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle, said the weather was remarkably warm for January. This would be no surprise to climate scientists who have pointed out that Norway is home to some of the fastest-warming places on earth. PA Media Energy secretary Ed Miliband is reportedly uneasy about the environmental implications In court last year, Shell’s lawyer, Christine O’Neill KC, said the company accepted that greenhouse gas emissions contributed to climate change and urgent action was needed to tackle it. However, she added, “whether, how and to what extent” any individual project contributed to climate change was “a complex one.” In his judgment, Lord Ericht wrote: “The effect of the burning of fossil fuels on climate change and the lives of individual persons is now well recognised in law.” The judge has now, in effect, batted the case out of the judicial arena and into the wilds of politics, where the landscape has shifted even in the two months since verbal arguments in the case were heard in Edinburgh. Republican Donald Trump is now back in the White House promising to “drill, baby, drill” while Labour chancellor Rachel Reeves is stressing economic growth over environmental concerns as she backs airport expansion. There has been speculation that Ed Miliband is uncomfortable with this position but he has not broken ranks. On the other hand, the oil industry says it is already facing difficult conditions because of political uncertainty and high levels of taxation, with the US firm Apache recently announcing it would leave the North Sea by the end of 2029. Given that backdrop, Shell is now understood to be pressing government in private for assurances about Jackdaw. “The addition of downstream emissions will add to the assessment process a new and significant factor which was not included on the previous assessment and may change the result of the assessment,” wrote Lord Ericht. If it does, that would delight climate campaigners and dismay the oil companies but industry insiders have told BBC News it is more likely that, in the end, the government will allow both Rosebank and Jackdaw to proceed.
