  1. Stories of the people taken from Israel Stories of the people taken from Israel More than 15 months after the ******-led attacks on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza, a ceasefire agreement has come into effect, paving the way for a hostage release. ****** seized 251 people on 7 October 2023. On Thursday, ****** released Agam Berger, 20, a soldier who had been kidnapped from the Nahal Oz military base. Two more Israeli hostages are due to be released, along with five Thai nationals as part of a separate agreement. This is the third group to be released since the deal was agreed. Previously, ****** released three female IDF soldiers and, on the first day of the ceasefire, three other women. During the first six-week phase of the ceasefire, a total of 33 hostages should be freed in exchange for hundreds of ************ prisoners and detainees in Israel. According to Israel, 86 hostages are still unaccounted for, although only 52 are believed to be alive. In addition, ****** is still holding two men seized after crossing into Gaza from Israel before the war – Avera Mengistu, 27, an Ethiopian-Israeli dual national, and Hisham al-Sayed, 35, a Bedouin Arab, as well as the body of a soldier killed during a conflict in 2014. These are the stories of those hostages who are still being held, which have either been confirmed by the BBC or credibly reported. 3. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra May Have Fixed Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Grainy Screen Issue Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra May Have Fixed Galaxy S24 Ultra’s Grainy Screen Issue Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra was launched at the Unpacked 2025 event, as the company’s top-of-the-line model. While the smartphone brings expected hardware upgrades, it is also said to have fixed a key display issue which affected the Galaxy S24 series at low brightness. Although the display specifications largely remain unchanged from the previous generation, the Galaxy S25 Ultra features an upgraded Corning Gorilla Armor 2 protection with an anti-reflective coating. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra Fixes Display Issue In a post on X (formerly Twitter), tipster Ice Universe claimed that Samsung has allegedly addressed the issue of grainy particles appearing on the screen at low brightness across the Galaxy S24 series with its Galaxy S25 Ultra. A side-by-side comparison of both smartphones suggests that the issue has been minimised, with the tipster claiming improvements in screen quality and brightness uniformity. It has been confirmed that the S25 Ultra has fixed the issue of particles appearing in the S24 Ultra at low brightness, and the screen quality has been improved. (There was an error in comparing the materials just now, it has been corrected) S25U ,S24U pic.twitter.com/AkudA1naEG — ICE UNIVERSE (@UniverseIce) January 29, 2025 However, the tipster’s comparison only focuses on the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S25 Ultra, thus, it remains unclear if the same also applies to the Galaxy S25 and Galaxy S25+. Notably, the issue was highlighted last year by the same tipster who strongly criticised the South Korean technology company and called for a class action lawsuit. At the time, Ice Universe called Samsung “arrogant” and urged users in the US not to buy the Galaxy S24 lineup. In addition to the display issue, the tipster also claimed to experience problems related to colour inaccuracy and excessive sharpening with regards to Galaxy S24 Ultra’s camera system. The phone’s 5x telephoto camera was said to experience hardware issues which caused white objects to “glow”. While several of the camera-centric issues were allegedly fixed by the company with over-the-air (gaming platforms) updates, the grainy display problem on the Galaxy S24 Ultra reportedly remains persistent, which suggests that it may be a hardware-related issue. Rwanda-backed M23 rebels captured Goma, a city of 2 million people in the DRC, on Monday, ignoring widespread calls for them to halt their offensive and enact a ceasefire. They extended their advance on Wednesday. Rwandan forces backed up M23 in Goma, according to Congo, the United States and other Western powers. Rwanda has denied its involvement. British foreign minister David Lammy told parliament on Tuesday Rwanda received over 1 billion dollars in global aid every year, including around 32 million pounds ($39.80 million) of bilateral *** assistance but “all of that is under threat when you attack your neighbours”. “We in this House are clear that we cannot have countries challenging the territorial integrity of other countries,” Lammy said. “Just as we will not tolerate it in the continent of Europe, we cannot tolerate it wherever in the world it happens.” “We have to be clear about that,” Lammy added. This week’s events represent the gravest escalation of the decades-old conflict in eastern Congo since 2012. The hostilities are rooted in the spillover of Rwanda’s 1994 genocide into Congo and the struggle for control of Congo’s lucrative minerals. 8. Jacob Zuma’s daughter arrested on terrorism charges Jacob Zuma’s daughter arrested on terrorism charges A daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on Thursday to face terrorism charges. Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, who is also a member of the South African parliament, is accused of inciting violence during riots in July 2021 which led to the deaths of more than 350 people. Zuma-Sambudla handed herself over to police on Thursday to face charges under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act and incitement to commit violence, police said. “The arrest is as a result of a meticulous investigation by the Durban Crimes Against the State unit of the Serious Organised Crime Investigation, following the unrest that brought the country to a standstill in 2021,” police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said. Her political party confirmed that Zuma-Sambudla would appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. The case against Zuma-Sambudla is based on posts she made on Twitter, now called X, allegedly urging protesters to cause more damage during nationwide unrest that started after her father was sent to jail. Former president Zuma was taken to prison for defying a court order to testify before a corruption inquiry. Following that, angry mobs engaged in widespread looting of shops, arson and destruction of property. More than 5000 people were arrested. The riots, which lasted more than a week, were some of the worst unrest in South Africa since the end of the apartheid system of white ********* rule in 1994. Zuma-Sambudla was accused of encouraging the unrest as a sign of support for her father, although a later investigation into the riots found that they were partly spurred by frustration and poverty during South Africa’s harsh lockdowns because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jacob Zuma was president from 2009 to 2018 but was pressured to resign by the African National Congress party he then led over corruption allegations. That set in motion an ongoing political feud between Zuma and the man who replaced him, current President Cyril Ramaphosa. Jacob Zuma was expelled from the ANC last year and now leads a new political party called the MK Party, which became the official opposition following last year’s national election. Zuma-Sambudla has become a high-ranking member of the MK Party. Source link #Jacob #Zumas #daughter #arrested #terrorism #charges Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  12. DeepSeek Blocked on App Store, Google Play Store in Italy DeepSeek Blocked on App Store, Google Play Store in Italy The ******** artificial intelligence app DeepSeek could not be accessed on Wednesday in Apple and Google app stores in Italy, the day after the country’s data protection authority requested information on its use of personal data. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission said it had also requested information from DeepSeek about data processing in relation to Irish users. DeepSeek last week launched a free AI assistant that it says uses less data at a fraction of the cost of incumbent services. By Monday, the assistant had overtaken US rival ChatGPT in downloads from Apple’s App Store, sparking panic among tech stock investors. “The news of the withdrawal of the app was only a few hours ago, I cannot say whether it is due to us or not,” the head of the Italian data regulator, Pasquale Stanzione, was quoted as saying by news agency ANSA. “Our office will launch an in-depth investigation to see if GDPR rules are being respected,” Stanzione added, according to ANSA, referring to European Union data protection regulation. The Italian regulator, known as the Garante, said on Tuesday it wanted to know what personal data is collected, from which sources, for what purposes, on what legal basis and whether it is stored in China. It gave DeepSeek and its affiliated companies 20 days to respond. Stanzione also said the regulator was seeking reassurances on safeguarding for underage users of the app, on the avoidance of bias and avoiding electoral interference. A notice displayed to Italian customers on Apple’s App Store said the app was “currently not available in the country or area you are in”. A message on the Google app platform said the download “was not supported” in Italy. DeepSeek seemed to be still operational for Italian users who had previously downloaded the application, and was available for download and working on Wednesday in other European Union countries and in Britain. In Germany, an interior ministry spokesperson said the government was monitoring AI applications for potential interference before the February 23 national election. “Of course, the security authorities are concerned with AI applications and possible manipulation, possible influence on the formation of public opinion through AI applications, especially now in view of the Bundestag elections,” the spokesperson said, without naming any specific models. Italy’s Garante is one of Europe’s most active watchdogs on the use of AI. Two years ago it briefly banned the use of Microsoft-backed ChatGPT over suspected breaches of EU privacy rules. Ireland’s Data Protection Commission is the lead EU regulator for most of the top U.S. internet firms due to the location of their EU operations in Ireland, but DeepSeek has not designated Ireland as its EU headquarters. © Thomson Reuters 2025 (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.) Resolutions involving gym memberships, spin classes, outdoor runs or Pilates may spike in January, but for anyone hoping to have consistent gains, what you eat and drink immediately following a workout can matter. Theories abound on everything from chocolate milkto kimchi fried rice, but certain foods and beverages can slow digestion, cause inflammation, hinder muscle repair or cause unwanted weight gain. So, what truly helps ensure the fruits of your sweaty labors, and what are some of the worst things to eat and drink after a stint at the gym? To separate fact from fiction, we spoke with a doctor, nutritionists and dietitians focused on matters like digestion, building and repairing muscle, and weight management to learn what you should pack in your gym bag for postworkout power. Foods That Help Build Muscle Isa Kujawski, a functional registered dietitian, explained that the ******* immediately following a workout is known as the “anabolic window,” a time when the body is primed for nutrient uptake due to increased insulin sensitivity. “Insulin, a key hormone, helps shuttle amino acids and glucose into muscle cells to repair microtears and replenish glycogen stores,” Kujawski explained. “Whole-food proteins and complex carbs offer bioavailable nutrients that optimize this process while supporting long-term muscle health.” Kujawski recommended “a combination of high-quality protein and carbohydrates” to maximize muscle repair and glycogen replenishment. “Grilled chicken with roasted sweet potatoes, wild-caught salmon with quinoa, or a smoothy made with protein powder, frozen berries and nut butter” are all great options for building and repairing muscles, Kujawski said. Dr. Peter Brukner, a nutritionist, dietitian and sports physician who authored the book “A **** Lot of Good,” said the recovery time following a workout is vital. It’s “when your body acts like a sponge, ready to take in nutrients it needs for fixing muscles and getting back energy,” he explained. What you eat and drink in that time ******* will impact the repair of your body and the effects of all your hard work. “What you eat then can really change how good you feel and get better later,” Brukner said. He recommended aiming for 20 to 30 grams of high-quality protein — like eggs, grilled chicken, Greek yogurt and protein shakes. “Protein helps your muscles rebuild and recover faster, so don’t skip it!” he said. For protein options that are vegetarian-friendly, registered nutritionist Amie Parry-Jonessuggested cottage cheese, lentils, beans, chickpeas, nuts and seeds. She recommended consuming proteins “within 30 minutes to 2 hours” of a workout. Nutritionist therapist Fadumo Mohamed said the best drinks for building and repairing muscles are always going to be protein shakes. She said she prefers ones made with “whey or plant protein and a banana for quick energy.” Foods That Help With Weight Management Smart food choices after workouts include things like “a hard-boiled egg with cucumber slices, turkey patties with steamed broccoli, or a handful of almonds with an apple,” Kujawski said. After you exercise, your levels of leptin — a hormone that regulates hunger — “may fluctuate, and blood sugar levels may dip,” she warned. Kujawski said it’s best to consume high-protein and fiber-rich meals within an hour of your workout to “stabilize blood sugar and curb excessive postworkout cravings, supporting weight loss goals without sacrificing recovery.” For managing and losing weight, Chris Mohr, a registered dietitian and a fitness and nutrition adviser at the website BarBend, recommended “a protein shake made with water, low-**** dairy or unsweetened almond milk,” and to pair that with a small piece of fruit. “This combo keeps calories in check while providing essential nutrients,” he said. “Protein supports muscle repair and apples are high in fiber, which helps you feel full longer.” Complex carbs, like those found in brown rice, can help boost depleted glycogen levels after a workout. LauriPatterson via Getty Images Parry-Jones recommended replenishing “depleted glycogen following exercise with complex carbohydrates,” including options such as whole oats, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat or whole-grain rye bread. Complex carbs can keep you fuller for longer, and they contain lots of nutrients. She said to avoid refined carbohydrates like white bread, white pasta and cake, as “these products increase blood glucose levels rapidly, promoting insulin production, which is a **** storage hormone.” She also stressed the importance of lean meats for weight loss and appetite regulation after working out, but said to eat red meat and high-**** dairy sparingly, “as they are rich in saturated ****, which can interfere with insulin signaling.” Brukner said that you should add “some nonstarchy vegetables like spinach or cucumbers” to your postworkout diet for more fiber and to keep calories low. Foods That Fight Brain Fog If you’re hoping to avoid mental fatigue following a workout, there are some simple snacks that you can pack in your gym bag. Kujawski explained that exercise “temporarily increases cortisol, which can contribute to mental fatigue,” and that replenishing with omega-3s, antioxidants and vitamins supports the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin and reduces inflammation, helping the brain recover more quickly after exercise. “Include foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants and B vitamins, which enhance cognitive function and reduce oxidative stress,” she said. Kujawski recommended snacks like walnuts, pumpkin seeds, blueberries and avocado slices. And she noted that hydration is key. “Focus on hydration paired with antioxidants to further support brain recovery,” she said, suggesting “a green smoothy with spinach and cucumber or matcha tea.” Nicole Rubenstein, a sports dietitian and nutritionist who is the owner of the company Racer’s Edge Nutrition, also said to make sure you have enough omega-3s in your diet. “Foods such as salmon, chia seeds and walnuts contain omega-3s,” she explained. “Another option would be to add in an omega-3 supplement daily.” Rubenstein warned that if you only experience brain fog on workout days, it could indicate that you’re not meeting your fluid or carbohydrate needs on those days. And chocolate addicts should rejoice, because dark chocolate can also be a great snack following a workout. “A square of dark chocolate” was recommended by Mohr, who cited its brain-boosting flavonoids. In addition, he suggested snacks like blueberries, which are high in antioxidants, and green tea, which “enhances alertness with caffeine and L-theanine.” Alexandra Babcock, a registered dietitian and owner of the company Nutrition Innovations, said that eating carbohydrate-rich foods can combat brain fog after an endurance-heavy workout by replenishing glycogen. “Seasonal fruits like citrus, pears and apples provide 15 to 25 grams of carbohydrates and are fiber- and nutrient-rich additions that support recovery,” Babcock said. Foods That Improve Digestion (And Why This Matters) There’s almost nothing worse than an uncomfortable stomach. And if one of your health goals centers on digestion, we’ve got some suggestions to help get things … moving. Parry-Jones explained that when it comes to digestion, exercise provides long-term benefits in myriad ways, including “improving the gut microbiome.” She also said that it lowers your risk for conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome and colon *******. She noted that if you’re trying to improve your digestion, you should be mindful of the workouts you choose, as certain ones can restrict blood flow to the digestive system, “especially in hot conditions.” And she said to stick with “easily digestible foods,” such as rice, chicken, turkey, fish, cooked vegetables, bananas, smoothies and white potato or sweet potato. Pickles and other fermented food are more than just mood boosters and delicious snacks; Mohamed recommended ones like “kefir, sauerkraut or yogurt” for digestion. She also suggested “fiber-rich fruits like papaya and pineapple,” which contain enzymes that can aid in digestion, as well as “ginger or peppermint tea to soothe the stomach and coconut water to replenish electrolytes.” Mohr recommended yogurt after a gym session — specifically Greek or Icelandic yogurt with live probiotics — and to mix in a banana. He said that these foods are easy on the stomach, rich in protein and nourishing. “Probiotics in yogurt support a healthy gut, while bananas are a gentle source of carbs and potassium, aiding muscle function and easing digestion,” Mohr said. Foods To Avoid After A Workout There was a general consensus among all of the experts we spoke to about exercise and nutrition: To maintain a healthy diet and body, avoid the types of foods and drinks that you should only be consuming in moderation more generally. They are likely the ones you already have in mind, such as alcohol, greasy fast-food hamburgers and high-sugar treats with little nutritional benefit. Mohamed explained that alcohol “dehydrates and impairs recovery.” It topped Babcock’s list of foods and drinks to avoid following a workout, with the dietitian saying that “just one standard drink” will impair how glycogen is replenished “for up to 36 hours.” And if you love spicy food, you might want to wait a few hours before reaching for the Sriracha sauce. “Skip very spicy foods and high-fiber foods immediately after your exercise since they could upset your stomach or cause digestive discomfort,” Mohr advised. It might feel satisfying to reach for a candy bar after a particularly grueling workout, but Brukner advised against it, saying that kind of snack “can cause high blood sugar,” among other issues. Going for such quick fixes can “make you feel tired,” he said, adding that they’re “not good for body recovery.” “These kinds of fats can cause more inflammation and make it difficult for muscles to heal properly,” Brukner said. “It is better if you eat foods with good proteins, healthy fats and carbohydrates that do not make your blood sugar go up too much.” Related… Source link #Eat #Drink #Immediately #Workout Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  16. WWE 2K25 Does What the Stamford-Based Promotion Has So Cautiously Avoided for All These Years WWE 2K25 Does What the Stamford-Based Promotion Has So Cautiously Avoided for All These Years Intergender wrestling has been an aspect that the WWE has had a cautious approach to over the years. We have rarely seen male and female competitors face each other in direct competition in the WWE. It could be because of any number of reasons, from concerns about advertiser reactions to the company’s family-friendly image. WWE 2K25 already looks like a big upgrade. | Image Credit: Visual Concepts/2K In a surprising move though, this will change with the upcoming release of WWE 2K25 which is reintroducing intergender matches. Coming out on March 14, the game features the biggest roster ever in a WWE game, and with intergender matches, it is set to push the franchise into new territory. One that WWE itself has hesitated to explore in its televised side of operations. WWE 2K25 will feature intergender matches You can pit your favorite male and female wrestlers vs each other! | Image Credit: Visual Concepts/2K Intergender matches have been absent from the WWE 2K series for years, despite their previous presence in older wrestling games. WWE’s real-world restrictions on male vs. female matches have made it even more unlikely that the feature would make a comeback. Luckily for us, WWE 2K25 is bringing back intergender wrestling and will let male and female stars compete against one another in all game modes. You can check out the full details here. This feature hasn’t just been a big request from us players, even WWE stars like Rhea Ripley have talked about how they want to see these matches return to the games. Back in 2023, Rhea Ripley talked to GamesHub about this very topic and explained that intergender wrestling is a part of WWE history and it should be in more games. It is a game, so I feel like there’s no limitations to what you could do. I’ve done these things – they’re part of history. You can’t erase history. I think it would be cool if we could add intergender wrestling into 2K, even if it’s WWE 2K24. I would definitely put myself against a lot of men that I would want to wrestle. With WWE 2K25, that vision becomes reality. Players can finally recreate classic intergender showdowns, book dream matches that WWE would never allow, and even introduce custom-created Superstars into mixed-gender battles. You can now create your dream matches that you’d never see on television. WWE 2K25 has a number of new features and upgrades 2K may have cooked good this time. | Image Credit: Visual Concepts/2K This isn’t the only interesting thing about the upcoming title though. WWE 2K25 will also feature an entirely new way to experience the WWE Universe with The Island. Exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, The Island is an open-world hub where players can complete quests, challenge other wrestlers, and work toward earning a spot in The Bloodline. The game also introduces the Bloodline’s Dynasty Showcase, a tribute to the legendary Anoa’i wrestling family. Hosted by Paul Heyman, this mode will let us see all the iconic moments in the history of Roman Reigns’ Bloodline faction. We can expect to see stars like The Rock, Yokozuna, and Solo Sikoa. There’s no mention of a Create-A-Finisher return though. We’re also gonna see some familiar modes make a return with some improvements. MyGM now supports online multiplayer for up to four players so we can draft rosters and compete against one another in long-term brand management. MyFACTION has been expanded with new content, including 50 additional stages and updated faction wars. What kind of early expressions do you have of WWE 2K25? Let us know your thoughts! 17. American Airlines Stock Falls After Earnings: What to Watch Next? American Airlines Stock Falls After Earnings: What to Watch Next? American Airlines Group (NASDAQ:) is the largest commercial airline carrier in the United States. With the largest fleet, most passengers, and over 5,400 daily flights, the company is a key bellwether in the transportation sector for the commercial airline industry. Therefore, when American Airlines surprisingly issues downside guidance, systemic concerns about the travel industry naturally creep up. Investors in rival carriers like United Airlines Holdings (NASDAQ:) and Delta Air Lines (NYSE:) are naturally spooked and question whether their stocks will also suffer a sustained sell-off. A Stellar Holiday Travel Season Reflects in Q4 Results The 2024 holiday travel season was one of the busiest on record. American Airlines reflected this was solid Q4 2024 EPS of 86 cents, crushing analyst estimates by 20 cents. Revenues rose 4.6% YoY to $13.66 billion, firmly beating consensus estimates for $13.43 billion. Cargo revenue rose by 10.5%. Passenger revenue rose 3.3%. While domestic revenues rose 3.5% YoY, driven by a 3.6% increase in capacity, Latin American revenues declined due to capacity growth of 4.6%, which was overshadowed by the 5% decline in unit revenues. Surprisingly, the Pacific region saw a 39.4% growth in revenue, driven by a 32.3% increase in capacity and a 5.3% increase in unit revenues. American Airlines prioritized improving its balance sheet by seeking to trim debt by $4 billion by 2027. Unlike Delta and Southwest Airlines (NYSE:), American Airlines doesn’t pay stock dividends. Rising CASM Costs Lead to Lowered Forecasts Some key metrics to be aware of with airlines are the cost per available seat mile (CASM) and total revenue per available seat mile (TRASM). CASM is how much the airline spends per seat on a flight (cost), and RASM is how much money the airline takes in for the same seat (earnings). In Q4, TRASM rose 2% YoY. Operating CASM, excluding special items and fuel, rose 5.7% YoY. Incidentally, lower fuel costs in Q4 helped drive earnings higher. International travel experienced a sharp TRASM rise of 11.5% in the Atlantic and 3.5% in the Pacific. has risen over 8% since then, which was a key factor in their guidance. Investors are hopeful that President Trump’s “Drill, baby, drill” policy to bolster domestic fuel supplies will cause oil and gas prices to fall again. American Airlines issued downside guidance for Q1 2025 as it projects an EPS loss of 40 cents to 20 cents versus consensus estimates for a loss of just 4 cents. However, full-year 2025 EPS was in line between $1.70 and $2.70 versus $2.42 consensus estimates. This was enough to trigger an 8.7% sell-off the following day. American Airlines’ Woes Are Company-Specific, Not Systemic The Q1 2025 downside guidance was ugly. However, the company insisted that the demand environment was robust. The guidance was based on current demand trends and fuel price forecasts. Aside from that, American Airlines made a strategic mistake in the quarter by leaning on existing corporate accounts to squeeze more profits by scaling back on discounts. This caused corporate customers to switch to United and Delta as they expanded their promotions and added new premium services. Additionally, rising CASM costs are expected to grow by a high-single-digit percentage due to further reductions in capacity. This contrasts Delta Air Lines’s forecast of low-single-digit CASM growth. The silver lining is that the lower capacity will push fare prices higher, thereby lifting TRASM and improving margins. AAL Stock Triggers a Rising Wedge Breakdown A rising wedge is a bearish pattern comprised of an ascending (rising) upper trendline resistance and a converging ascending lower trendline support. As the channel gets tighter, the breakdown occurs when the stock collapses under the lower trendline support. AAL peaked at the $19.12 Fib, heading into earnings on a rising wedge pattern. The sell-the-news reaction triggered a gap down below the daily anchored VWAP at $17.49. This caused the daily RSI to reverse down to the 45-band sharply. (Fib) pullback support levels are at $16.76, $15.94, $15.36, and $14.78. AAL stock’s average consensus price target is 12.6% higher at $19.05, and its highest analyst price target sits at $25.00. Analysts will likely revise forecasts and price targets. It has 13 analysts’ Buy ratings and seven Hold ratings. The stock has a 6.9% short interest. Actionable Options Strategies: Bullish investors can consider using cash-secured puts at the Fib pullback support levels to buy the dip. If assigned the shares, then writing covered calls at upside Fib levels executes a wheel strategy for income. 18. Rwanda’s Kagame defiant on criticism of east Congo offensive; rebels push south Rwanda’s Kagame defiant on criticism of east Congo offensive; rebels push south By Yassin Kombi and Sonia Rolley GOMA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) – Rwandan President Paul Kagame blasted criticism of his country’s role in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo where rebels his government backs have seized its largest city, saying Kigali is prepared for “confrontation” if necessary. M23 rebels, with support from Rwandan troops, marched into Goma earlier this week and are now advancing south toward Bukavu, capital of neighbouring South Kivu province, in the biggest escalation since 2012 of a decades-old conflict. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Rwanda has drawn an international backlash over its actions in eastern Congo, where it has repeatedly intervened either directly or through allied militias over the past 30 years in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide. The United States has told Rwanda it is “deeply troubled” by Goma’s fall. Germany cancelled aid talks with Rwanda while Britain said the 32 million pounds ($39.80 million) of annual bilateral assistance it gives to Kigali were under threat. African countries have called for an immediate ceasefire. Any successful push south by M23 would see them control territory previous rebellions have not taken since the end of Congo’s major war two decades ago, and magnify the risk of a new all-out conflict drawing in forces from multiple countries. Troops from neighbouring Burundi, which has had hostile relations with Rwanda, support Congolese troops in South Kivu. A spokesperson for Burundi’s military declined to comment on the current situation in Congo. KAGAME THROWS DOWN GAUNTLET In comments at an emergency summit late Wednesday of the East African Community (EAC), of which Rwanda and Congo are both members, Kagame ripped neighbouring countries for the failure of diplomatic efforts to resolve fighting between Congo and the M23 over the past three years. “Is there anybody among us who did not see this coming?” Kagame said in his comments to other heads of state at the summit, videos of which his office posted to X. “I saw it coming because I did not see who was taking charge of the process.” Congo President Felix Tshisekedi did not attend the virtual summit, instead giving a speech to the nation in which he promised a military campaign to recover lost territory. Kagame also responded to an X post by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, 13 of whose soldiers belonging to a U.N. peacekeeping mission and separate southern African force in eastern Congo have been killed since last week. Ramaphosa attributed the fighting to an escalation “by the rebel group M23 and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) militia”, and called for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. Kagame responded by accusing South Africa of working alongside a militia in Congo with ties to perpetrators of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and “threatening to take the war to Rwanda itself”. “If South Africa wants to contribute to peaceful solutions, that is well and good, but South Africa is in no position to take on the role of a peacemaker or mediator,” Kagame wrote. “And if South Africa prefers confrontation, Rwanda will deal with the matter in that context any day.” REBELS THRUST SOUTHWARDS FROM GOMA After seizing Goma, a lakeside city of nearly 2 million, M23 fighters were advancing south from the town of Minova, along the western side of Lake Kivu, five diplomatic and security sources said on Wednesday. The M23 tried to take the town of Nyabibwe, about 50 km (30 miles) north of Bukavu, on Wednesday but were pushed back by Congolese forces, a local resident told Reuters by phone. M23 is the latest ethnic Tutsi-led, Rwandan-backed insurgency to fight in Congo since the genocide of 1994 when extremist Hutus killed about a million Tutsis and moderate Hutus, and then were toppled by Tutsi-led forces led by Kagame. He has been Rwanda’s president ever since. Congo and the global head of U.N. peacekeeping missions have said Rwandan troops are present in Goma, backing the M23. Rwanda says it is defending itself against threats from Congolese militias, without directly commenting on whether its troops have crossed the border. Rwanda says some of the ousted perpetrators have sheltered in Congo since the genocide, posing a threat to Congolese Tutsis and Rwanda itself. Congo rejects Rwanda’s complaints, and says Rwanda has used its proxy militias to loot its minerals. 19. ******* GDP, fourth quarter 2024 ******* GDP, fourth quarter 2024 The Frankfurt skyline at dusk on a November day. Helmut Fricke | Picture Alliance | Getty Images The ******* economy shrank by 0.2% quarter-on-quarter in the three months ending in December, according to preliminary data released by Germany’s statistics office Destatis on Thursday. The figure is adjusted for price, calendar and seasonal variations. Analysts polled by Reuters had been expecting the gross domestic product (GDP) to decline by 0.1%. An early first reading of Germany’s GDP based on data available at the time, showed GDP dipped by 0.1% when adjusted for price, seasonal and calendar variations in the three months to the end of December. Thursday’s figures compare to a 0.1% rise of the country’s GDP in the third quarter of last year. Germany’s economic performance has long been sluggish, with quarterly GDP readings mostly hovering around the flatline in the past two years. The economy has however managed to avoid a technical recession. On an annual basis, the ******* economy contracted in both 2023 and 2024, by 0.3% and 0.2% respectively. Some respite is expected in 2025, with the ******* government on Wednesday revealing its forecast of 0.3% growth for the year — still a notably downward revision from it’s previous estimate of 1.1% growth. “The diagnosis is serious,” Robert Habeck, economy and climate minister, said during a press conference Wednesday, according to a CNBC translation. He added that the ******* economy has been stagnating for a long time. He pointed to both internal and global political uncertainty as factors leading to the cut to expectations, and added that the outgoing government had been unable to fully implement its growth plans as its term was ending early. A federal election in Germany is slated for Feb. 23, which is earlier than originally planned due to the break up of the country’s ruling coalition late last year. Habeck also said that there were structural issues weighing on the ******* economy, echoing comment made by the Finance Minister Jörg Kukies last week. “The structural weaknesses of our economy absolutely have to be addressed,” Kukies told CNBC. “It’s really important that we embark on a path of economic growth.” This is a breaking news story, please check back for updates. 21. 88 Energy delivers 283MMbbl prospective Alaskan oil resource estimate 88 Energy delivers 283MMbbl prospective Alaskan oil resource estimate 88 Energy could be sitting on an estimated 283 million barrels of oil recoverable from its Canning prospect at the company’s Project Leonis in Alaska, according to its just released maiden, total net mean, unrisked prospective resource estimate. The company’s unrisked net entitlement to the prospective oil resource comprises 3U (High) 469MMbbls, 2U (Best) 259MMbbls and 1U (Low) 136MMbbls with an estimated 33 per cent chance of success. When combined with 88 Energy’s additional 381MMbbls unrisked net mean prospective resource entitlement estimated for its adjacent USB prospect, the total net mean prospective resource entitlement is 664MMbbls. An unrisked prospective resource is a high-level estimates of oil and gas not yet tested by drilling. The measurement is based on assumptions and is used to set targets for companies to discover and advance resources through drilling and eventual flow testing. With its combined prospective resource endowment of 664MMbbls, 88 Energy has become a multi-reservoir company of scale. It is planning its Tiri-1 exploration well to test both the Canning and USB prospects in the first half of next year after current site selection is completed. The Canning prospect was identified from an extensive data review that included recently re-processed and interpreted Storms 3D seismic data. Along with other recently completed quantitative interpretations, including rock physics, amplitude versus offset (AVO) geophysics and seismic inversion, the review enabled 88 Energy to confirm significant prospectivity at both reservoir intervals. AVO technology has played an important role in recent new discoveries on the Alaskan North Slope field and is now employed globally. The data review identified a significant geological characteristic attributable to basin-wide erosion during the Mid Campanian epoch of the late Cretaceous, which created canyon-like scours in the Hue shale which underlies the Canning horizons. The scours created space for high-energy, toe-of-slope turbidites, or poorly-sorted undersea landslide sequences, which now form a reservoir succession more than 100 metres thick. It extends across an area of about 43 square kilometres, providing the project with significant scale. We are pleased to announce the maiden, internally estimated prospective resource estimate for the Canning prospect, which closely follows the successful bid for four new leases at Project Leonis in December 2024 with award expected in the first half of 2025. Looking ahead, our focus is firmly on advancing the Tiri-1 well at Project Leonis scheduled to drill in Q1 2026 as well as finalising funding to deliver a horizontal well test at Project Phoenix. 88 Energy’s proposed Tiri-1 well site is strategically located within its Leonis acreage. It is 26km southwest of the community of Deadhorse at the centre of the renowned Prudhoe Bay Oil Field, discovered in 1967, and just 22km southeast of the southeastern margin of the Kuparuk Oil Field. Tiri-1 also lies 22km north of the existing Alkaid Well in the recently-discovered Brookian sequence and is 41km north of the company’s Phoenix project Hickory-1 well discovery. The Hickory-1 discovery is beside the Dalton Highway and the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System, which also runs through the company’s Leonis project. The Canning prospect remains untested by offset wells in its immediate vicinity but live oil shows have been logged in the Canning Formation in the Hemi Springs Unit 3 well. The Hemi Springs well is a few kilometres east of the proposed Tiri-1 site and has demonstrated porosities of up to 28 per cent. Reservoir quality within the associated canyon-scour features are anticipated to be even higher. The Hemi Springs well, drilled in 1985, targeted deeper reservoirs than the Canning and USB Formations and, without the benefit of modern seismic data, lead to overlooked low-resistivity payable oil. The oil shows in the Hemi Springs Unit 3 mud logs correlate with extensive mapped oil potential and recent advances in understanding low-resistivity oil pay have unlocked substantial reserves across Alaska’s North Slope, as shown by the Willow and Pikka fields. Additionally, the company says similar high net-to-gross turbidites are being produced from the Hue Shale scours in Conoco Phillips’ Tabasco field, 37km to the northwest. Its favourable location, all but surrounded by potentially payable ground, and promimity to key infrastructure adds to historical data that supports Project Leonis’ compelling technical and commercial potential and enabled the identification of oil in the USB and Canning Formations. 88 Energy’s re-evaluation of previous wells led to the successful drilling and testing of the Hickory-1 well in its Phoenix project in 2023-2024, an approach that guided the re-evaluation of Project Leonis to identify and target untapped resources. 88 Energy has engaged exploration and production management company Fairweather LLC to kick off planning and permitting for its proposed Tiri-1 exploration well to test the USB and Canning reservoirs. With drilling reliant on securing a farm-out partner, the company has commissioned Llamas and Bannister Energy Advisors to manage an active, re-launched and expanded farm-out process. The recent expansion of Project Leonis’ acreage and the addition of the Canning Formation reservoir opportunity in such prime prospective real estate invigorates the project’s significant status as a cornerstone asset in the company’s energy portfolio. 22. College staff vote to strike over job cuts threat College staff vote to strike over job cuts threat Staff at the University of Sheffield International College (USIC) have voted to strike over proposed job cuts. A total of 36 staff are at risk of redundancy, with private operator Study Group citing falling student numbers. Members of the University and College Union (UCU) voted in favour of the action, with a turnout rate of 72%. All of those taking part backed the action, the union said. Sam Morecroft, UCU branch chair, said: “It is clear these redundancies have nothing to do with falling student numbers and everything to do with an attempt to force an untested standardised operating model on our college.” Mr Morecroft said if the job cuts in the student support and academic teaching teams went ahead it would “increase staff workload and reduce the quality of academic and pastoral support our students receive”. Study Group recently signed a new 10-year contract with the University of Sheffield to run USIC. The organisation enrols students from around the world to improve their English and provide preparation courses for those who want to go on and study at the University of Sheffield itself. Courses can cost up to £26,000 per year. ‘Adapt staffing’ A Study Group spokesperson said they were committed to providing an “excellent education” but changes in international recruitment meant they had to “adapt” staff numbers. “We very much regret UCU members at Sheffield International College have made this decision, especially after months of active engagement to try to avoid such an outcome, to a point where compulsory redundancies have been minimised,” the spokesperson added. 23. European Central Bank interest rate decision, January 2025 European Central Bank interest rate decision, January 2025 The European Central Bank is widely expected to announce yet another interest rate cut on Thursday, in what would be the fifth reduction since the central bank began easing monetary policy in June last year. Markets were last pricing in an over 90% chance of a 25-basis-point cut on Thursday, which would bring the ECB’s deposit facility, its key rate, to 2.75%. Further rate cuts are then being priced in as the year continues, which would bring the deposit facility to 2% by the end of 2025, if they materialize. The ECB is grappling with balancing a re-acceleration of euro area inflation in recent months with sluggish economic growth in the region. Headline euro are inflation rose for the third consecutive month to 2.4% in December, after falling below the ECB’s 2% target several months earlier. A renewed pick-up in inflation was expected, as base effects from lower energy prices fade. A first reading of the euro area’s gross domestic product for the fourth quarter of 2024 is due out on Thursday, with economists polled by Reuters anticipating 0.1% growth from the previous *******. Markets will be closely following ECB President Christine Lagarde’s post-announcement press conference amid uncertainty surrounding newly inaugurated U.S. President Donald Trump’s policies. Investors are keen to gauge how comfortable the ECB is with diverging from the U.S. Federal Reserve in terms of monetary policy and prospective relaxation. The Fed on Wednesday left interest rates unchanged, in line with expectations. Markets are overall pricing in fewer interest rate cuts from the Fed than from the ECB this year. 25. It’s a sign: Warne’s legacy living on in Sri Lanka It’s a sign: Warne’s legacy living on in Sri Lanka It’s a sign. On the first day of Australia’s Test series opener with Sri Lanka, a large banner reading “Shane Warne Stand” adorned the historic Galle Fort that overlooks the seaside town’s stadium. By the time the majority of *********** fans had arrived for day two, the same sign had made its way on to the small stand next to the Galle Cricket Club on the ground’s western side. One of the touring supporters had hung a Collingwood guernsey next to the Warne tribute. You could imagine the late spinner, a St Kilda super fan, cringing down. More than 8000km away, a stand at his home ground the MCG was renamed in Warne’s honour in March 2022, only weeks after his death from a heart attack rocked the cricket world. The makeshift “stand” in Galle may not have been opened to as much fanfare, but still meant plenty. “Shoutout to you guys,” Warne’s son Jackson said on Instagram. “It looks awesome and dad would be so happy.” It was a small touch, a sheet of cloth with some lettering, but nevertheless demonstrated the continuation of Warne’s enduring bond with Sri Lanka. It’s been 20 years since a phone call with rival bowler Muttiah Muralitharan convinced Warne to travel to Sri Lanka in the wake of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami. The disaster killed 31,000 in Sri Lanka alone, and sparked a mass clean-up effort to help the country back to its feet again. Warne turned from villain on the cricket pitch – he took 59 wickets against Sri Lanka in 13 matches – to national hero when he arrived in the coastal village of Seenigama. About 40 minutes from the stadium in Galle that is hosting the current two-match series, Warne forged a partnership with local charity Foundation of Goodness. He spent time with local families who had lost their homes, lent a hand in the disaster effort and encouraged those abroad to dig deep. Warne would go on to help raise $1 million for the reconstruction of the stadium in Galle. Today, the trophy contested in Sri Lanka and Australia’s bilateral series bears the names of Warne and Muralitharan, the two leading wicket-takers in Test history. As an extra tribute, Sri Lanka has opened a Warne-Muralitharan legacy board at the entrance of Galle International Cricket Stadium. Fans will be permitted to pay tribute to the late spin great and his Sri Lankan rival by signing the board during the two-match series. Former Sri Lankan allrounder Farveez Maharoof was the first to write his name there. “This initiative honours the extraordinary achievements of the two greatest spinners in cricket history,” said a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket.
