Ohio State quality control coach placed on leave amid university investigation
Ohio State quality control coach placed on leave amid university investigation
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State defensive quality control coach Joe Lyberger has been on paid administrative leave for the last month while the university investigates him.
Ohio State’s human resources department sent Lyberger a letter on Dec. 27 that noted he would be placed on leave immediately. The investigation is being conducted by the university’s Office of Institutional Equity.
The letter was obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press through a public records request. The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch first reported Lyberger’s situation and noted that the Office of Institutional Equity deals with complaints of harassment, discrimination and ******* misconduct among other things.
The letter didn’t specify the nature of the investigation.
“He’s going through proverbial hell and back,” said Sam Shamansky, an attorney representing Lyberger. “The university sets up a system whereby the lawyers are effectively neutered and reduced to advisers with absolutely no ability to assist in the hearing in a meaningful way. It’s an absolute travesty of justice.”
Shamansky said the university hasn’t given him any indication of how long the investigation could take.
“The university chooses to keep people in the dark and maintain a system of we’ll call it pseudo-justice that puts the accused individual under an incredible disadvantage,” he said. “That is done by design because the university is regrettably interested only in itself as an institution, and not in protecting basic rights of the accused, whether they be a student, coach, employee, an athlete. They couldn’t care less.”
Lyberger has been part of Ohio State’s football staff for the last four seasons. He previously had worked two seasons as a defensive assistant at Bucknell, and he was a graduate assistant at Ohio Dominican before that.
He played at Slippery Rock before graduating in 2016.

‘Bronze for Betty’: cricket great wants MCG statue
‘Bronze for Betty’: cricket great wants MCG statue
*********** cricket’s newest hall of famer Christina Matthews is pushing for the legendary Betty Wilson to become the first female cricketer to have a statue at the MCG.
Matthews, who was announced as the 65th member of the *********** Cricket Hall of Fame before the historic women’s Ashes Test at the MCG on Thursday, believes the honour for Wilson is overdue.
Considered one of the greatest female cricketers of all time, Wilson played 11 Tests between 1948 and 1958 for a batting average of 57.46, and also took 68 wickets at a miserly 11.80.
In 1958, Wilson became the first male or female cricketer to score a century and take 10 wickets – including a remarkable first-innings haul of 7-7 – in a Test match.
“The general view here is Betty Wilson should be acknowledged,” Matthews said on Thursday.
“There’s been a bit of a push, ‘bronze for Betty’ statue at the MCG, and let’s hope that’s going to come to pass.
“The SCG led the way with Belinda Clark, and I think the MCG needs to catch up with it.
“It is time to recognise our past players in statues, and the visual cues are so important; people come by and they see and then they want to know more, and then they understand.”
Don Bradman, Shane Warne, Neil Harvey, Bill Ponsford, Dennis Lillee and Keith Miller are the male cricketers to be immortalised outside the MCG.
Of the 16 statues around the famous stadium, only two – Olympians Betty Cuthbert and Shirley Strickland – are women.
The rest are made up of *********** football identities such as Leigh Matthews and Ron Barassi.
Christina Matthews could be a candidate in her own right, having played a record 20 Tests for Australia. She also played in the 1988 and 1993 ODI World Cup victories.
Originally from Victoria, Matthews’ contribution extends to the ACT, NSW and most recently Western Australia.
She served as boss of WA Cricket for more than a decade, and in 2024 was made a Member of the Order of Australia.
“It is fitting to make this announcement on another historic day when the MCG hosts the first women’s Test at the venue in more than 75 years,” *********** Cricket Hall of Fame chair Peter King said.
“Christina’s incredible contribution to improving participation and the standing of women’s cricket in the community is the reason why she is a deserved inductee into the *********** Cricket Hall of Fame.”

North Eugene High principal to step down effective immediately
North Eugene High principal to step down effective immediately
North Eugene High’s principal has officially stepped down just two and a half weeks after his resignation was made public.
Principal Nain Muñoz emailed the North community Wednesday afternoon, communicating his intent to step away as the school’s administrative lead, effective immediately. Originally, Muñoz had planned to finish out the 2024-25 school year.
“This has been an emotional process and I believe that this is the right course for our school,” Muñoz said in the email. “This decision gives our staff the best possible opportunity to start fresh and have enough time to find new leadership for the following school year. For myself, I am eager to focus on my family before my next major professional undertaking.”
Muñoz submitted his resignation on Nov. 13, but it wasn’t publicly announced until Jan. 10. When the North community learned he was leaving, they rallied around Muñoz, urging both him and Eugene School District 4J to reconsider. Muñoz sent out an email on Jan. 17, stating he intended to reverse the resignation, but 4J upheld it.
After a whirlwind month for NEHS, Muñoz has officially left his role.
Muñoz told The Register-Guard that his time at NEHS would forever include some of his favorite experiences as a principal. He expressed his gratitude to the entire North community and said it was an honor to be in the role.
North Eugene High School principal Nain Muñoz introduces dignitaries on the stage during graduation on June 8, 2024.
“The whole staff are second to none, I have never been around a group of professionals who care and give so much for students,” Muñoz said. “I am also going to miss the Highlander students. I never took one of those days as their principal for granted. I loved every minute of it, and will miss many.”
4J assistant superintendents Larry Williams and Brooke Wagner sent a release to community members Wednesday afternoon confirming Muñoz’s exit and giving updates on who will be taking over NEHS’s leadership in the meantime.
The district stated that 4J Director of Secondary Education Greg Borgerding will temporarily serve as interim principal, pending the district’s placement of a longer-term interim principal through the remainder of the school year. NEHS assistant administrators Jesús Sandoval, Steven Humble and Peter Barsotti will remain on staff.
“We know this was a hard process for all, including Principal Muñoz and the North Eugene Community,” Williams and Wagner stated. “We were not prepared for his initial resignation and anticipated that we would begin recruitment with him still at North through year-end. We want to recognize that these situations are painful for many who are connected to the North Eugene community. However, there simply have been a combination of difficulties that could not be resolved.”
Nain Muñoz on his first day as principal at North Eugene High School, at the opening of the 2023 school year.
Williams and Wagner thanked Muñoz for his time at NEHS, which began in the fall of 2023.
When his resignation was initially announced, 4J leaders expressed their intent to organize “opportunities” for parents and guardians to give input on qualities they’d like to see in NEHS’s next principal.
“We love and respect the whole North community and want nothing more than for it to have a great leader who will focus on all the great things North Eugene High School does,” Williams and Wagner stated. “We will work closely with the North community as we seek the right person to exemplify Highlander Pride.”

Elon Musk says Tesla will launch a robotaxi service in Austin this June
Elon Musk says Tesla will launch a robotaxi service in Austin this June
Tesla will introduce a paid autonomous ride-hailing service in Austin, Elon Musk said during an earnings call discussing the automaker’s financial results for 2024. As TechCrunch reports, he said the company will use cars with no human driver behind the wheel and with the unsupervised version of its Full Self-Driving software, which Tesla has yet to release. The service will launch with the company’s internal fleet in Austin this June before expanding to other locations in the US. And then next year, Tesla owners will be able to add their cars to the fleet whenever they want, kind of like how people can list and unlist their properties on Airbnb, Musk said. He explained that the automaker wants to iron out any kinks first, such as making sure billing works well and that the robotaxis will stop at the right spot when they’re ordered.
Since the plan is to allow vehicle owners to add their Teslas to the company’s robotaxi fleet, the automaker is also planning to release its unsupervised FSD software in California and other regions in the US before the year ends. Knowing Musk’s tendency to overpromise on timelines, though we’d take that announcement with a (huge) grain of salt.
Musk has been talking about robotaxis for a while now and said back in 2019 that Tesla will “have over a million robotaxis on the road” within a year. When he launched the Cybercab in 2024, he said he envisions a future wherein people own several robotaxis that they can then earn money from through a ridesharing network. It’s worth noting that Waymo started offering fully autonomous rides to select users in Austin in late 2024 and will be launching the service fully in the city sometime this year.

Four in the mix as Dolphins captaincy battle heats up
Four in the mix as Dolphins captaincy battle heats up
The Dolphins will make a call in the next month on their next captain and it will come from one of their “Fab Four” forwards in the new leadership group.
The standard wisdom is 24-year-old warrior lock Tom Gilbert will be given the honour after foundation skipper Jesse Bromwich retired at the end of last year.
Gilbert is the favourite but veteran forwards Felise Kaufusi, Kenny Bromwich and Mark Nicholls are all in the leadership group and have stellar credentials of their own.
All of the quartet have the experience, gravitas and respect of the playing group.
Nicholls, 35, did lead the side last year when Jesse Bromwich was unavailable, but he is in the twilight of his career. Kaufusi and Bromwich, who won premierships together at Melbourne, are also closer to the end than the beginning of their stellar contributions as players.
Gilbert appears the hot favourite in a long-term sense but he has not played an NRL game since May 2023 due to a shoulder injury before doing his ACL in last season’s trials.
It is why any announcement about the captaincy is not expected until late in February and once all the trials are done and dusted. Gilbert has set round one as a goal for his return and the coming month will be crucial in his development.
At this stage the Dolphins have Gilbert slated to play in the NRL’s Pre-Season Challenge clash against Gold Coast on February 22 in Redcliffe.
New coach Kristian Woolf is yet to make a call on the captaincy but Nicholls said he would be proud to play under the leadership of Queensland representative Gilbert.
“Kristian hasn’t given much away,” Nicholls said.
“Tom plays footy the way I love.
“I don’t think there’d be any player at the Dolphins that wouldn’t want to follow Tom into battle.
“The way he plays and conducts himself around training is one of the reasons he’s in the leadership group despite his age.
“All the boys would get behind him.”
Dolphins CEO Terry Reader also said the decision was far from settled.
“That’s something that’s been talked about but we’re going to get through the trials and see how the guys come together,” he said.
“We’ve got a wonderful leadership group and the captain will come from that group.”
Reader did say “everything about Tom” made him a strong candidate.
“He’s had two season-ending injuries and just the way he’s done his rehab, come back and how he’s handled himself in the group,” he said.
“He’s a wonderful leader when he’s on the field and with what he does off the field.
“The biggest thing to worry about with Tom is getting him on the field. We’ll just be happy to see Tom playing football.”

Google Play Store Rolls Out Verified Badge for VPN Apps Focused on Privacy and Safety
Google Play Store Rolls Out Verified Badge for VPN Apps Focused on Privacy and Safety
Google on Tuesday announced a new way for users to identify ‘trusted’ apps and make informed choices on the Play Store. Consumer-facing VPN apps that meet the user privacy and safety standards will now appear with a verified badge, in compliance with the Mountain View-based technology company’s Play safety and security guidelines. Currently, NordVPN and Aloha Browser are some of the apps which are available with the verified badge on the Google Play Store.
Verified Badge for VPN Apps
In a blog post, Google highlighted that its new verified badge for VPN apps complements existing features like Google Play Store banner for VPNs and Play’s Data safety declaration. Verified VPN apps will now be highlighted in search results, on app details pages, and in a dedicated section listing approved VPNs. To earn the verified badge, apps must meet the following criteria:
Complete a Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2 validation
Have an Organization developer account type
Meet target API level requirements for Google Play apps
Have at least 10,000 installs and 250 reviews
Be published on Google Play for at least 90 days
Submit a Data Safety section declaration, opting into:
Independent security review, under ‘Additional badges’
Encryption in transit
Google Play’s MASA AL2 Lab Evaluation Photo Credit: Google
One of the first steps is to successfully undergo the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) Level 2. Google’s lab evaluates public versions of apps, provides assessment feedback and remediation steps for flagged issues directly to developers. While this doesn’t guarantee approval, Google says fulfilling the aforementioned requirements “significantly” enhances the chances of earning the badge.
The company claims a verified badge can help developers enhance their app’s credibility and attract more users. Currently, NordVPN, hide.me, and Aloha Browsers are some of the VPN apps on Google Play Store listed with the badge, helping them stand out in a “fairly crowded” marketplace.

St. Norbert recommends cutting 13 majors, and more cuts may be coming. What’s changing?
St. Norbert recommends cutting 13 majors, and more cuts may be coming. What’s changing?
St. Norbert College announced at a student town hall Tuesday night it’s recommending cutting 13 majors and making revisions to four more at the end of this school year — and that more cuts will likely be coming. The town hall, one of three last night, came two weeks after professors received notice they’d been recommended for cuts.
Majors ranging from art education to physics are being recommended for cuts by Valerie Martin Conley, vice president of academic affairs. Mathematics education, music education, philosophy and Spanish education are recommended for “reimagination.” It’s unclear what that reimagination will look like.
In addition, the college will “probably” have another round of cuts in coming years, according to students and faculty. It’s still not clear how many faculty will be affected by this recommended round of cuts.
For students whose majors are being cut, the college will create individualized plans to make sure the courses students need to fulfill their degree requirements are available. To meet those needs, St. Norbert is exploring a variety of options to allow them to complete their degrees, including online programs, working with partners like the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and hiring adjunct professors. St. Norbert’s faculty handbook forbids the college from hiring new professors in academic areas where tenured faculty have been terminated unless the terminated professor was offered and rejected reinstatement.
The college did not provide answers to the Press-Gazette’s questions about last night’s announcements. The Press-Gazette requested permission to attend the town hall but was denied, and the campus is closed to media.
The majors recommended for cuts, according to students who attended the meeting, are:
Earth science and geology
Theology and religious studies

Nothing Phone 3a and Phone 3a Pro Tipped to Launch on March 4: Report
Nothing Phone 3a and Phone 3a Pro Tipped to Launch on March 4: Report
Nothing will debut as many as two smartphones during its March 4 launch event, according to a report. The British smartphone maker has been rumoured to be developing the Nothing Phone 3a as the successor to the Phone 2a. While this model is likely to see the light of day, it will reportedly be joined by another model with the “Pro” moniker — marking a first for the company. This follows earlier speculation that Nothing plans to launch three smartphones before introducing its flagship Phone 3 later this year.
Nothing Smartphones Launching on March 4
According to an Android Headlines report, the purported Nothing Phone 3a and Phone 3a Pro are expected to be launched at the company’s March 4 product showcase. While previous leaks suggested that a “Plus” variant could accompany the Phone 3a, this latest claim hints towards it being replaced by a “Pro” model.
Upon launch, the Nothing Phone 3a is said to be available in two configurations — 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB. It may be offered in ****** and white colourways. Meanwhile, the Phone 3a Pro could have a single 12GB+256GB variant and a single grey colour option.
Nothing’s upcoming launch event has the tagline “Power in Perspective”. The phone is teased to have a Glyph interface around the two camera rings, which are stacked vertically at the back. While specifications remain unknown, the company is expected to drop many more teasers leading up to the launch event.
Nothing Phone 3a Specifications (Expected)
Previous reports suggest that the Nothing Phone 3a will sport a 6.8-inch full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate. It is said to be equipped with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset under the hood, paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of onboard storage. The phone is reported to bear the model number A059.
For optics, it could have a triple rear camera unit, comprising a 50-megapixel main camera, a 50-megapixel telephoto sensor with 2x optical zoom, and an 8-megapixel ultra wide-angle sensor. The handset may boast a 32-megapixel front camera for selfies and video calls.
The Nothing Phone 3a is likely to get a 5,000mAh battery with 45W charging support, similar to its predecessor. It could also offer NFC connectivity.

Sinkhole widens as rescuers try to save truck driver
Sinkhole widens as rescuers try to save truck driver
Rescue workers in Japan are trying to pull out a truck driver from a sinkhole that appeared on Tuesday and has since widened.
The sinkhole appeared in Yashio city in Saitama prefecture, near the capital Tokyo, swallowing a truck.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by road collapses, and officials have ordered scores of households in the area to evacuate their homes.
The 74-year-old driver was last heard responding to rescuers on Tuesday afternoon, according to local media.
While emergency crews managed to remove the truck bed from the pool-sized sinkhole, the driver’s cabin remains buried under soil and debris.
The hole measuring about 10m (33ft) wide and 5m deep first appeared on Tuesday morning at a road junction.
It is believed to have been caused by an underground sewage pipe rupturing.
Officials said that as waste water from the damaged pipe flooded the hole, it caused a second sinkhole to appear on Thursday.
Video footage showed a lamp post and a restaurant signboard falling in that collapse.
The road then collapsed further, merging the two sinkholes together to become a 20m-wide crater, further complicating the rescue operation.
The massive sinkhole also contains a gas pipeline, prompting fears of a potential leak. Officials have issued evacuation orders for 200 households in the surrounding area.
They have also urged residents in and around the city to use less water.
Sinkholes are increasingly common in Japanese cities, as many have ageing sewage pipeline infrastructure.
In 2016, a giant sinkhole in Fukuoka swallowed a five-lane street in Fukuoka, disrupting power, water and transport. No serious injuries were reported.
Last August, a search for a woman who disappeared into a pavement sinkhole in Kuala Lumpur’s city centre was called off after a week. Authorities deemed it “too risky” to continue deploying divers into the underground sewer network, which had strong currents and hard debris.

Golfing great Greg Norman reportedly called on as go-between for Trump administration and Australia
Golfing great Greg Norman reportedly called on as go-between for Trump administration and Australia
Golfing legend Greg Norman was reportedly called on to act as a go-between for Donald Trump and the Albanese Government.
The Aussie sporting great, who counts Mr Trump as a friend, famously came to the former Turnbull government’s aid in 2016 the day after Mr Trump’s first electiony.
Mr Turnbull’s staff found themselves in a mad scramble at the time after Mr Trump’s surprise win, with no one in the administration having contact details for the new president.
Norman came to the rescue, allowing Mr Turnbull to be one of the first leaders to speak with him after his victory.
In 2018, Norman played 18 holes of golf with Mr Trump in a successful bid to persuade him to exempt Australia from crippling steel and aluminium tariffs.
On Thursday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Norman had again helped in smoothing relations between the two countries.
“There was a request put through, yeah,” Norman said.
He reportedly declined to reveal details of the request, including who made it and where it came from.
Camera IconMr Trump and Norman in 2022. Credit: Seth Wenig/AP
But he said the result was “positive”.
“It worked … we’ll just leave it at that,” he said.
Norman reportedly said his assistance was not related to an interaction between Mr Trump and *********** Ambassador Kevin Rudd at Mr Trump’s Palm Beach golf club before his inauguration.
Dr Rudd has had a nervous few months after it was revealed that he had deleted old X posts criticising Mr Trump on the day that the US President won the 2024 election.
The post, published in 2020, contained a picture of Mr Trump and labelled him “the most destructive president in history”.
After the post was deleted, Dr Rudd’s office issued a statement saying it was done “out of respect for the office of President of the United States”.
“This has been done to eliminate the possibility of such comments being misconstrued as reflecting his positions as ambassador and, by extension, the views of the *********** Government,” the statement said.

Earlier in 2024, Mr Trump told *** MP Nigel Farage in an interview that Dr Rudd was “not the brightest bulb”, warning that if he was hostile when Trump was voted back in he would “not be there long”.
Mr Turnbull spoke last week, ahead of Mr Trump’s second inauguration, urging Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to “stand up” to Mr Trump in his dealings with the US.
“The big mistake that people make with Donald Trump is to pretend the best way to deal with him is to ***** up to him. You don’t win his respect by doing that any more than you win the respect of any bully you ***** up to,” he told The Nightly.
“To deal successfully with Trump, you need to win his respect, and you do that by standing up for yourself and looking after your own interests just as assiduously as he’s looking after his.
“If you’re the Prime Minister, you have one responsibility, which is to defend and advance Australia’s interests.”
Mr Turnbull was bullish in a leaked transcript of a conversation he had with Mr Trump back in 2017, convincing the President to stick with a deal the *********** Government had struck with the previous Obama administration on resettling asylum seekers.
