Reserve Bank interest rates: NAB moves forward cut call to February, in line with other bank majors
Reserve Bank interest rates: NAB moves forward cut call to February, in line with other bank majors
NAB has brought forward its prediction for when the Reserve Bank will cut interest rates by three months after inflation cooled more than expected.
It means all four big Aussie banks now expect a cut at the meeting on February 17 and 18. Westpac shifted its guidance on Wednesday.
Core inflation slowed to 3.2 per cent for the year to December, down from 3.6 per cent in the previous quarter.
The pace remains above the Reserve Bank’s target, but analysts took the numbers as a clear sign inflation was getting under control.
“The (December data) confirms that inflation has moderated more quickly than the RBA expected and sets up a likely downward revision to the inflation profile in the February Statement of Monetary Policy,” NAB chief economist Alan Olster said.
“This now makes February the most likely starting point for a gradual easing in interest rates.
“While the labour market remains strong, we do not see current conditions as inflationary.
“However, the RBA’s growing confidence will need to come in part from a reassessment of tightness in the labour market.“
When the central bank does cut, borrowers should not expect rapid movement, however.
Mr Olster said there was value in the Reserve waiting longer before making a decision. Yet he said the RBA had clearly changed its communications at the most recent meeting, in December, opening the door for a move.
Markets were overnight pricing in a 95 per cent chance of a rate cut in February.
Not all economists believe a move next month is locked in, however.
On Wednesday, EY’s Cherelle Murphy said relief was “closer, although a February rate cut is not a done deal.”.
Ms Murphy pointed to the strong labour market and low productivity growth as adding to cost pressure.
Jobs growth smashed expectations through 2024 and unemployment remains close to multi-decade lows.
Economists warn that trying to push the jobless rate too low through stimulus or rate cuts will reigi the inflation fight.

Intel Corporation (INTC) Reports Strong Q3 Growth, Expands AI and EV Leadership with New Product Launches
Intel Corporation (INTC) Reports Strong Q3 Growth, Expands AI and EV Leadership with New Product Launches
We recently compiled a list of the Goldman Sachs’ 35 AI Superstars. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) stands against the other AI stocks.
In September 2024, Peter Oppenheimer, the chief of global equity strategy and the head of macro research for Goldman Sachs in Europe, opined that the rise of tech stocks due to the AI ***** was not indicative of a financial bubble. Instead, per the Goldman bigwig, the performance of these companies was expected to continue delivering solid returns to investors, fueled by the rise of AI superstars outside of the magnificent seven, among smaller tech firms and in non-tech sectors. In the months since, the AI hype has only grown stronger, leading to a massive surge in the value of tech offerings, only offset by the recent emergence of ******** AI startup DeepSeek which is positioning itself as a budget ChatGPT. The success of this ******** startup, popularized by the downloads that the DeepSeek application has achieved on the mobile operating system markets, has led to a downward spiral in American tech futures.
Although the tech sector selloff has caught many investors by surprise, a new investor note by Goldman Sachs, as seen by news agency Reuters, contends that hedge funds were already anticipating this slump. Per the Goldman report, in the last two weeks, hedge funds have significantly reduced their positions in technology stocks. This retreat is part of a broader trend, as hedge funds have remained hesitant to reinvest in tech-related sectors following the sell-off from June to August last year. Alongside selling major technology stocks, hedge funds have also been offloading shares in adjacent industries, such as power and energy companies that would benefit from AI advancements—especially those supporting data centers and electric vehicle infrastructure.
Read more about these developments by accessing 10 Best AI Data Center Stocks and 10 Buzzing AI Stocks According to Goldman Sachs.
However, Goldman remains bullish on AI futures. Per Oppenheimer, tech stocks have dominated global and US equity returns since 2010, contributing 32% and 40%, respectively. The Goldman executive further claims that unlike speculative bubbles, these gains are backed by strong financials, with tech sector earnings per share surging 400% since the 2008 financial crisis, compared to a modest 25% increase across other sectors. Hyperscale companies in software and cloud computing have been key drivers of this growth, leveraging their vast resources and high profitability, he notes. Recent AI advancements have further boosted their valuations, concentrating gains among a few market leaders. Oppenheimer highlights that this pattern is consistent with past technological innovations, where capital inflows and competition drive rapid growth before eventual consolidation.
Story Continues
While dominant AI companies today were also leaders in the previous tech wave, new competitors are emerging, he predicts. The report further notes that the number of AI patents jumped from 8,000 in 2018 to over 60,000 in 2022, signaling growing competition. History suggests that the companies pioneering a technology may not be the ones to benefit most in the long run, Oppenheimer claims. Just as internet infrastructure investments paved the way for social media and ride-sharing dominance, the greatest value in AI may emerge from new players that leverage current advancements in unexpected ways, per the Goldman strategist. The Oppenheimer point of view is echoed in the latest Goldman report. This report highlights that over the past year, hedge funds have been more inclined to sell rather than buy stocks that would typically gain value from a US-driven AI *****.

However, a smaller group of hedge funds has maintained long positions, meaning they are betting that stock values will rise. In fact, these hedge funds currently hold the highest number of long positions in two years, indicating some confidence in future AI-driven growth, the report adds. Goldman underlines that the investment climate in AI has been heavily influenced by substantial spending from major US technology firms. Following the success of ChatGPT, companies have invested tens of billions of dollars in AI infrastructure. Notably, OpenAI and SoftBank recently committed $19 billion to fund Stargate, a joint venture aimed at developing AI data centers in the United States. Despite these large-scale investments, competition from international players such as ******** AI startup DeepSeek has raised concerns about the long-term sustainability of US leadership in the AI sector.
Bruno Schneller, managing director at Erlen Capital Management, noted that hedge funds are adopting a cautious wait-and-see approach toward US AI-related stocks. Schneller further highlighted that large projects like Stargate come with significant regulatory complexities. The ongoing uncertainty regarding regulatory execution and enforcement has left many investors wary, contributing to the market’s volatility. While the US AI sector continues to receive significant investments, hedge funds remain uncertain about its profitability in the face of growing international competition and regulatory uncertainties. This cautious stance has led to stock market fluctuations, with many hedge funds opting to sell their tech-related holdings while a select few continue to maintain long positions, betting on future growth.

In the second quarter, revenue was $12.8 billion, reflecting a 1% decrease year-over-year, indicating a slight slowdown compared to the same ******* last year. However, the first-quarter revenue of $12.7 billion marked a 9% increase YoY, demonstrating solid growth at the start of the year. Moreover, the company extended its computing leadership in the AI PC, edge and auto spaces with the launches of Intel Core Ultra 200V series mobile processors with Intel vPro, a new line of Intel Core Ultra processors for enthusiasts and edge computing, and a new Adaptive Control Unit designed for electric vehicle (EV) power trains and zonal controller applications at Consumer Electronic Show 2025.

Heathrow’s third runway and London ‘gold shortage’
Heathrow’s third runway and London ‘gold shortage’
“It’s ***** or bust!” reads the Metro headline as it – like many of Thursday’s papers – looks at Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ “plan for rapid growth” as laid out in her speech on Wednesday. Her plans include backing for a third runway at Heathrow airport, and creating “Britain’s Silicon Valley” between Oxford and Cambridge. The paper also says she have given the “green light” to Premier League’s Manchester United’s hopes of turning their stadium, Old Trafford, into a mega stadium with 100,000 seats.
The i paper splashes on the chancellor’s “vision to ignite” the *** economy, but adds that, as well as tax rises later in the year, more public spending cuts cannot be rule out. According to the paper, sickness benefit cuts are also “likely”, while businesses “push to water down” a new workers’ rights law.
The Daily Telegraph says Heathrow’s third runway will not be ready until 2050, according to Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary. The paper quotes him as saying the airport will not get a new runway “in my lifetime and certainly not in [Reeves’] political lifetime”, and adds his warning that the project would be delayed for decades for a number of reasons, including planning processes, engineering challenges and climate protests.
“Chancellor’s Heathrow plan flies straight into turbulence”, the Daily Mail says, referring to opposition to a new runway at the London airport. The paper says she faces opposition from a “top Labour donor” and Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, who has condemned the proposal. Like many of Thursday’s front pages, the Mail also carries an image of actress Renee Zellweger, saying she “dazzles” in a strappy, floor-length dress at the London premiere for the latest Bridget Jones’ instalment.
The Guardian calls the response to the chancellor’s backing of a third runway “furious backlash” for reasons including climate obligations. But the paper notes the chancellor says the government will write up a policy in coming months to ensure that the new runway is “in line with legal, environmental and climate obligations”. According to the paper, some Labour sources say this means the expansion will never happen as it would “trash” the government’s emissions targets.
“The Reeves Revolution,” is what the Daily Mirror calls the chancellor’s “vision for growth”. In her speech on Wednesday, she pledged a £78bn boost to what the paper calls the ***’s “battered economy”.
The lead story in the Financial Times reports there is a “gold shortage” in London following a surge of bullion shipments to the US, driven by fears of President Donald Trump’s tariffs. According to the paper, traders have amassed an $82bn stockpile in New York. One industry executive tells the FT that “liquidity in the London market has been diminished”, as the wait to withdraw bullion stored in Bank of England vaults, has risen from a few days to between four to eight weeks, due to the shortages.
Assisted dying campaigners will look at dropping the requirement of having a High Court judge sign off on deciding where or not people should be allowed to end their own lives, the Times says, over concerns for Britain’s “struggling” court system. Under plans for England and Wales being looked at by MPs supporting the law change, a panel of experts, and not a judge, would make the decision on approving an assisted death. According to the paper, supporters of the bill say a panel is better suited to provide “proper scrutiny and safeguards” than the current plans.
The Daily Express leads on a poll it commissioned on Sir Keir Starmer and Brexit – saying it suggests that voters believe that the prime minister “can’t be trusted”. The paper says when questioned on whether the PM would “maximise” on the ***’s departure from the EU, about “just 9%” said they trust him “a lot” to do so.
The Sun reports that police are investigating after a security guard was allegedly assaulted at former Manchester United footballer Nicky Butt’s 50th birthday party. The paper says police are “questioning witnesses and scouring CCTV footage” from the venue.
The Daily Star focuses on Lord Mandelson – who has been nominated as the ***’s ambassador to the US – highlighting his previous criticism of President Donald Trump. Lod Mandelson on Wednesday said his earlier comments about Donald Trump were “ill-judged and wrong”.

Anti-Semitic explosive caravan terror plot: *********** Jewish fears ‘not unfounded’ in wake of foiled attack
Anti-Semitic explosive caravan terror plot: *********** Jewish fears ‘not unfounded’ in wake of foiled attack
Treasurer Jim Chalmers says fears held by the Jewish community in Australia “are not unfounded” in the wake of an explosive filled caravan being found north of Sydney, while Jewish leaders have criticised police and Government for a lack of leadership and action.
Dr Chalmers described the discovery of the van in Dural as “incredibly disturbing”.
“What it shows is that the fears that many have in the Jewish community in Australia are not unfounded when we hear these kinds of reports,” he said on Sky News.
“Now I know that the joint counter-terrorism teams have described this as a potential mass casualty event which is chilling, which is disturbing.
“We know that the threat is now being contained, we know that arrests have already been made and I thank the police and the authorities for what they’ve been able to do here.”

Following the potential “terror” plot being foiled after a by-chance discovery from a Dural local, NSW Police said they were doing “everything” to investigate what could have been a “mass causality event”. However, they have not yet ruled the evolving situation a terror incident.
NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb lashed out on Thursday, saying the investigation becoming “compromised” following a leak that is understood to have occurred from agencies investigating the discovery in secret for 10 days.
Opposition leader Peter Dutton threw his support behind the NSW Police, AFP and ASIO as questions continue to swirl around when the Government were briefed on the potential “terror” attack.
“Had this terrorist attack taken place, if the reports are correct, around 40m blast zone, this would have been the most significant terrorist attack and loss of life in our country’s history,” he said at a press conference on Thursday.
“So full marks to the New South Wales Police, the AFP and ASIO and everyone else involved in this investigation. This is a deeply serious matter, and it has not gone away as an issue for our country.”
“I think we have had a terrorist attack that has been thwarted that had the potential to kill hundreds of people.”

Australia, Israel and Jewish Affairs Council executive director Dr Colin Rubenstein said: “Enough is enough; we are fed up.”
“We haven’t seen the appropriate leadership and enforcement that I think most Australians expect,” Mr Rubenstein told Sky News Australia.
The discovery of the caravan follows a string of other incidents including synagogue fires, car fires, and even an attack on a childcare centre.
Jewish Liberal MP Julian Leeser, whose electorate includes Dural, told ABC News: “The time for half measures is over.”
“We need to throw the book at anyone and everyone engaged in anti-Semitic attacks and we need to improve and increase security provided to the Jewish community as we would to any community that is facing the sort of threats that the Jewish community is facing today,” he said.
“Because this is not just an attack on the Jewish community. It’s an attack on our *********** way of life.”
Peter Wertheim, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of *********** Jewry on Monday said the community should have been informed about the caravan discovery, saying instead they found out via media reports.
“I think they should have told us earlier, before it hit the media, because the impact on the community then could have been managed,” he said at a press conference.
“It’s always better to face your fears when you understand what you’re facing rather than to be presented with something out of the blue. And so, whilst there might have been some justification for secrecy in the initial stage of the investigation, I think that time had long passed.”
The community were left in the dark so that NSW Police could conduct investigations covertly, according to Ms Webb and NSW Premier Chris Minns.
Defending the decision not to inform the Jewish community about the threat that reportedly could have caused a 40m-wide explosion, Mr Minns said: “We would let the public know immediately unless it compromised the police investigation.”
“I want to make it clear, if a counter-terrorism investigation began this afternoon I wouldn’t issue a media release unless NSW Police told me that is what we needed to do for the inquiry,” he told Sunrise.
“These are complicated inquiries. I have confidence in their experience and expertise in relation to this because they have foiled terrorist attack after terrorist attack and kept Australia safe for over 20 years since September 11.
Camera IconNew South Wales Premier Chris Minns. Credit: STEVEN SAPHORE/AAPIMAGE
“So, these are difficult decisions, I am not suggesting otherwise, but there is a massive police inquiry that is taking place and police should be able to continue those inquiries.
“They make a decision that this needs to be done behind the scenes without talking about methods and tactics that they deploy … There is a very simple reason for that. So, the criminals don’t know what the police are getting up to.”

Meta won’t slow AI spending despite DeepSeek’s breakthrough
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., arrives for the Meta Connect event in Menlo Park, California, on Sept. 25, 2024.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday said it’s too early to tell what impact DeepSeek’s breakthrough AI model will have on his company and the broader tech industry.
Still, Zuckerberg poured cold water on the notion that Meta’s overall AI spending will soon drop now that DeepSeek has allegedly proven that cutting-edge AI requires far less money and computing resources than previously thought.
“It’s probably too early to really have a strong opinion on what this means for the trajectory around infrastructure and CapEx,” Zuckerberg said. “There are a bunch of trends that are happening here all at once.”
The technology markets were reeling this week over an AI model created by DeepSeek, which is a Hangzhou-based AI lab linked to the ******** hedge fund High-Flyer. DeepSeek claims it only took two months and less than $6 million to develop its R1 large language model. That news caused Nvidia shares to tank 17% on Monday because of the implications that companies don’t need as many of the chip-maker’s graphics processing units for their own artificial-intelligence projects.
Zuckerberg discussed DeepSeek during a call with analysts Wednesday as part of Meta’s fourth-quarter earnings. The company reported that sales rose 21% year over year to $48.39 billion, ahead of Wall Street expectations.
Meta’s shares rose nearly 2% on Monday, indicating some investors believe DeepSeek’s cost-efficiency could mean the social media company may be able to create powerful AI systems for less money. Meta announced last week plans to invest between $60 billion and $65 billion this year as part of its AI push. The company on Wednesday said its 2025 total expenses would come in between $114 billion to $119 billion.
Meta is still digesting some of DeepSeek’s feats and that his team hopes to eventually implement some of those advancements for its own AI projects, Zuckerberg said.
“That’s part of the nature of how this works, whether it’s a ******** competitor or not,” Zuckerberg said, referring to how one company’s advances end up benefiting others.
While it’s possible that companies will eventually require less computing resources to train these powerful models, Zuckerberg said that having a ton of server power may be necessary when the software is actually running and performing actions, resulting in “a higher level of intelligence and a higher quality of service.”
“It’s going to be expensive for us to serve all of these people because we are serving a lot of people,” said Zuckerberg, whose company said it had 3.35 billion daily active people in the fourth quarter.
Meta will continue to learn from technologies like DeepSeek’s and release its own open source and free Llama AI models that can also push the industry, Zuckerberg said.
“I continue to think that investing very heavily in CapEx and infra is going to be a strategic advantage over time,” he said. “It’s possible that we’ll learn otherwise at some point, but I just think it’s way too early to call that, and at this point, I would bet that the ability to build out that kind of infrastructure is going to be a major advantage.”
Zuckerberg also said that DeepSeek’s emergence validates Meta’s commitment to an open-source approach to AI, Zuckerberg said.
“There’s going to be an open-source standard globally,” he said. “For our own national advantage, it’s important that it’s an American standard.”

COLDSPRING, Texas (AP) — A man accused of killing five people in Texas in 2023 after a neighbor complained that he was keeping a baby awake by firing a gun in his yard late at night pleaded guilty Wednesday to ******* charges and will serve a life sentence without the possibility of parole, a prosecutor said.
Francisco Oropeza, a ******** national, pleaded guilty to capital ******* of multiple persons as part of a deal to avoid a possible death sentence, San Jacinto County District Attorney Todd Dillon told The Associated Press. Oropeza was offered the deal after prosecutors had lengthy discussions with family members of the victims, he said.
U.S. immigration officials said Oropeza had been deported four times between 2009 and 2016. But Dillon said he will spend the rest of his life behind bars in Texas.

“He is not eligible for deportation. He is not eligible for anything,” Dillon said. “He will stay in the custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice until he breathes his last breath.”
Oropeza entered the pleas Wednesday after listening to emotional testimony from family members of the victims, Dillon said.
Oropeza’s attorney, Anthony Osso Sr., didn’t immediately respond to a Wednesday phone message seeking comment. He previously said that tension between Oropeza and his neighbors had been building for quite some time.
Police say Oropeza stormed into his neighbor’s house on April 28, 2023, after being asked to stop firing his gun late at night. All five victims, including a 9-year-old boy, were from Honduras. The baby wasn’t harmed.
The shooting happened in the rural town of Cleveland, about 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of Houston. Police say Oropeza fled the neighborhood after the shooting, setting off an intense search. He was was eventually arrested near Conroe, roughly 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the crime scene.

Russia withdraws military equipment from Syria’s Tartous port, images show
Russia withdraws military equipment from Syria’s Tartous port, images show

BBC Verify
PA Media
The Royal Navy released images of the Sparta II (centre) as it moved through international waters in late December, before arriving in Syria
Russia has stepped up its military withdrawal from Syria, removing vehicles and containers from its key Tartous port on the country’s Mediterranean coast, analysis by BBC Verify suggests.
After the fall of the Assad regime in December, verified footage showed columns of Russian vehicles moving north towards the port. Satellite images subsequently showed military hardware being stored there.
But new images published on Wednesday by Planet Labs showed that much of the material has now disappeared, after the departure of vessels linked to the Russian military.
It comes as Russian officials held “frank discussions” with the new government in Damascus, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
There have been reports that the new Syrian government has cancelled Russia’s lease at the port – but government departments contacted by the BBC would not confirm a final decision had been made.
Tartous has been a key base for Russia in recent years, allowing it to refuel, resupply and repair vessels in the Mediterranean. But warships previously docked at the port have not appeared in satellite images since the collapse of the Assad regime – which Moscow backed throughout the Syrian civil war.
The Kremlin has signalled its desire to retain control over the base, and said in December that it was speaking to the new authorities about maintaining a presence there.
However, evidence suggests that Moscow has now decided to move valuable equipment away from the port. Satellite images have also shown Russian hardware being removed from the nearby Hmeimim airbase for several weeks.
Two vessels – Sparta and Sparta II – docked at Tartous on 21 and 22 January, ship tracking sites showed. Both vessels are owned by Oboronlogistika LLC – a shipping company which operates as part of the Russian ministry of defence.
Both ships are sanctioned by the US and have been linked by Ukraine to the transportation of Russian arms. They are roll-on/roll-off vessels that can carry vehicles.
Sparta II departed the port by Monday, according to data from the tracking website MarineTraffic. Satellite images also revealed that a large quantity of military vehicles previously parked near the vessel were no longer there.
The signal of the ship’s onboard tracker was briefly picked up by MarineTraffic on Tuesday morning, showing it was travelling west through the Mediterranean near the coast of Cyprus. But since then, no signal has been received, suggesting the tracker may have been turned off.
On Wednesday, satellite images showed another vessel – identified by experts as the Sparta – had also left the port. The images also show a large quantity of containers parked nearby had been removed.
A signal from Sparta’s onboard tracker has not been detected since it docked at Tartous – suggesting it may have been turned off as well.
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) requires all ships over 300 gross tonnes to broadcast their signal at all times, except in some limited circumstances.
Ships may choose to turn off their tracking signal for legitimate reasons – such as when navigating high-risk piracy zones. But according to Nato it could also suggest the vessel is trying to “conceal ******** activities”.
Maritime expert Frederik Van Lokeren, a former Belgian navy lieutenant and analyst, said he was “highly confident” the vessel that had left the port was Sparta, based on satellite images.
BBC Verify has previously monitored Sparta and the area where it had been docked is now empty.

Military vehicles at Tartous port on 17 December
It is unclear where exactly the ships are heading. Mr Van Lokeren told BBC Verify that they could be en route to Libya, where the Kremlin already boasts a significant military presence supporting the Tobruk-based warlord Khalifa Haftar.
Last week, Ukrainian military intelligence told BBC Verify that Russian flights had transferred military personnel and equipment from Russia’s other Syrian base – Hmeimim – to airbases in Libya at least 10 times since mid-December.
However, Mr Van Lokeren also suggested that the ships could be bound for Russia, where he said there was a “large probability that the military equipment might end up being deployed on the frontline against Ukraine”.
Dmitry Gorenburg, an expert on security issues in the former Soviet Union at Harvard University, told BBC Verify that the movements suggested Russia’s presence at Tartous was coming to an end.
“I don’t know whether additional ships will be needed to remove everything or not, but to my mind that’s largely immaterial,” he said. “It’s just a question of time until Russia’s military presence at the base is concluded. We shall see what comes after.”

2027 Rugby World Cup: Perth snubbed for quarter final hosting duties in blow for WA rugby
Perth has been snubbed for a Rugby World Cup quarter final hosting opportunity in 2027, with Optus Stadium deemed not large enough to host one of the tournament’s knockout matches despite being the third-biggest stadium in Australia.
WA tourism minister Rita Saffioti said the state government received feedback Optus Stadium’s capacity, rather than its isolation and travel factor, was the reason given for missing out on the key games.
Sydney will host the final, the two semi-finals, and the bronze medal match.
Optus Stadium was on Thursday morning confirmed to host the opening match of the tournament on October 1, which will feature the Wallabies.
Seven matches will be played in WA.

Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg defends $65bn AI spend after DeepSeek rise
Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg defends $65bn AI spend after DeepSeek rise
Getty Images
Meta has defended its $65bn (£52bn) investment in artificial intelligence (AI) days after US tech stocks wobbled in the wake of ******** AI app DeepSeek’s sudden rise.
Chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said to investors on Wednesday there was a lot to learn from DeepSeek, but that it was too soon to have “a really strong opinion” about what the app means for the future of AI.
“If anything, I think the recent news has only strengthened our conviction that this is right thing for us to be focused on,” he added.
Many US tech stocks sank this week after DeepSeek surged in popularity, though Meta’s has bucked this trend by rising.
The stock was up in after hours trading after it posted better than expected financial results on Wednesday.
However, questions remain about what advances in ******** AI will mean for the US AI market generally considering DeepSeek’s claim it was developed at a fraction of the cost of its US rivals.
Zuckerberg said in a call to investors following the results on Wednesday that DeepSeek’s rise strengthened his conviction in his company’s embrace of “open-source” AI.
Meta, parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, took a different tack from many US companies by releasing an open source AI model for free.
Zuckerberg on Wednesday said he thought that approach was important to keeping the US at the cutting edge, as countries around the world compete to become the key players in the still-emerging industry.
“There’s going to be an open source standard globally and I think for our own national advantage it’s important that it’s an American standard,” he said.
“We take that seriously. We want to build the AI system that people around the world are using.”
‘Major advantage’
Meta last week announced it was planning to spend as much as $65bn this year to expand its AI infrastructure.
Zuckerberg on Wednesday acknowledged ongoing debate about how best to direct AI investments, but told investors that for his firm, which serves billions of people globally, big investments made sense.
“I would bet the ability to build out that kind of infrastructure is going to be a major advantage – for both the quality of the service and being able to serve the scale we want to,” he said.
He said it would also be a critical year for the company in other areas, saying he this year would be key to determining whether sales of the company’s smart glasses will take off as hoped.
Zuckerberg has said he expects all glasses to be replaced by smart glasses within a decade, a prediction he repeated on Wednesday.
He also spoke of plans to revive the “cultural relevance” of Facebook, the social media sight that launched his fortune but which has fallen out of favour compared to other offerings such as Instagram and tikTok.
Zuckerberg also defended his recently announced decision to end fact-checking, saying he thought plans for community notes would be more effective.
He said the company had seen no hit to advertiser demand as a result of its changes.
It reported more than $48bn in revenue in the last three months of 2024, up 21% from the same ******* the prior year.
Though AI spending has weighed on the company, it still reported quarterly profit of more than $20bn, up 49% from a year ago.

Evacuation order issued in mountain community due to ‘out of control’ wildfire
Evacuation order issued in mountain community due to ‘out of control’ wildfire
An “out of control” wildfire has prompted an evacuation order for residents in the Crooked Creek community near Bat Cave Road south of Old Fort, according to McDowell County Emergency Management.
L.A. wildfire survivors struggling with FEMA applications could benefit from disaster case managers
The fire began after a tree fell on a power line and is currently burning in the 3000 block of Bat Cave Road. Residents in the 3000-4500 block of Bat Cave Road, Pine Cove Road, Cherry Springs Road, Roy Moore Road, Julia Drive, the 1000 block of Lavender Road, and Cozy Cove Drive.
The order includes all private drives that turn off the roads listed above.
An emergency shelter has been established at First ******** Church in Old Fort on East Main Street to accommodate evacuees, ABC affiliate WLOS reported.
Emergency crews are on the scene working to contain the blaze.
As of 6 p.m., the 200-acre fire was 5% contained with no reported injuries. There are no expansions to the evacuation order for the Crooked Creek Fire, officials said.
Western North Carolina is under an increased fire danger warning due to gusty winds, making it more difficult for the fire to contain.
Firefighters are focusing on structure protection for multiple homes are working on establishing fire containment lines.
Officials have closed Bat Cave Road to through traffic and vehicles are being detoured onto Pine Cove Road. Drivers are advised to use caution and seek alternate routes.
Dozens of firefighters from both the N.C. Forest Service and local fire departments scrambled to protect the homes of residents near the fire including Lloyd Davis, who has lived here much of his life.
“This house wouldn’t have been standing if not for the Dysartsville Fire Department and all these other groups,” Davis said. “They’ve done a wonderful job here.”
A viewer shared a video of the fire spreading around several homes three miles south of Old Fort. In the North Carolina mountains, gusts topped 60 mph causing hundreds of outages in Ashe County.
Resident Rellon Walker says he is prepared to evacuate.
“As you see, it’s still boiling and it looks like it’s almost behind that ridge,” Walker said. “I assume the wind is blowing it across the ridge and down the ridge.”
Neighbors gathered in a field near the homes as firefighters headed up the mountainside along Bat Cave Road.
Emily Brooks lives there and her boyfriend is a firefighter.
“I know we have a lot of heroes up in there right now trying to get it under control,” Brooks said.
She said she is proud of her boyfriend.
“Makes me want to tear up I’m so proud of him,” she said. “He’s a lineman too so he got off work to just to fight this fire.”
Marion wildfire
Another wildfire was sparked along 80 Watson Place on Highway 221 North in Marion but there is no evacuation order for that at this time.
Officials said Wednesday to halt any outdoor burning because of the dry, windy conditions.

Water bills in England and Wales to rise by £123 a year in April
Water bills in England and Wales to rise by £123 a year in April

Households in England and Wales will pay £123 more on average on their annual water bills from April, final figures show.
The rise – higher than stated last month – will see the average annual bill rise to £603, but there are significant variations between regions.
Water companies have committed extra money for investment in infrastructure, such as reservoirs, and more help for struggling customers.
However, consumer groups are warning the rise means more households will fall into debt.
‘Difficult’ increase
Regulator Ofwat outlined forecast bill rises in December, which would cover the next five years.
But the bill rises for the year from April, announced by industry body Water ***, are higher than those announced by Ofwat as the calculations now include inflation – so account for rising prices that suppliers face.
The average bill increase equates to around £10 a month, from £40 to £50, but millions of households face even steeper rises.
Southern Water customers told they will see a 47% increase to £703 a year while Hafren Dyfrdwy and South West Water bills are rising by 32%.
Thames Water customers have been warned they will see a 31% hike and Yorkshire Water is raising bills by 29%.
Bournemouth Water customers will also see a 32% increase to their bills.
Other factors, such as whether a customer is metered and how much water they use, means the bill changes will vary considerably for customers depending on their circumstances.
Bill rises for the next five years are being front-loaded, with a big increase this April so that spending on new infrastructure, such as new reservoirs, can get going.
Water *** chief executive David Henderson said: “We understand increasing bills is never welcome and, while we urgently need investment in our water and sewage infrastructure, we know that for many this increase will be difficult.”
Water companies say they will also set aside more than £4bn to fund social tariffs – discounted bills for vulnerable people – over the next five years.
But the Consumer Council for Water (CCW), which represents billpayers, said support did not go far enough, as about 2.5 million households were already in debt to their water company.
“These rises will heap considerable pressure on millions of customers who are already having to make difficult choices,” said its chief executive Mike Keil.
“Customers want to see investment in improving services and cleaning up our rivers but that can’t come at an unbearable cost to struggling households.”
The CCW said this was the largest rise in water bills since the privatisation of the water industry 36 years ago.
David ******, chief executive of Ofwat, said: “We have pushed companies to double the amount of support over the next five-year ******* and strongly encourage customers who are struggling to pay their water bills to contact their water company to access this.
“While bills are rising, the £104bn investment we have approved over the next five years will accelerate the delivery of cleaner rivers and seas and help to secure long-term drinking water supplies for customers.”

Could Racheal Reeves’ new reforms boost growth?
Could Racheal Reeves’ new reforms boost growth?
Getty Images
Chancellor Rachel Reeves said on Wednesday that “economic growth is the number one mission of this government” as she unveiled a series of proposals to boost the ***’s economy.
But how quickly could the government get growth from the plans she announced?
Critics have argued some of the projects – such as expanding Heathrow – would not help in the near term.
BBC Verify has examined some of the key numbers and claims.
How slow is the ***’s growth?
The most recent official data shows there was virtually no growth in GDP – the overall size of the *** economy – between the July 2024 election and November 2024.
And the latest medium term official growth forecast from the Office for Budget Responsiblity, the government’s official forecaster, is for 1.6% GDP growth in 2029, which would be well below the pre-2008 financial crisis average growth of 2.8% a year.
However, the International Monetary Fund has forecast that the ***’s growth rate for 2025 and 2026 will be higher than in France and Germany.
Lower rates of GDP growth would translate into slower growth in our wages and incomes and general living standards.
Heathrow expansion
The chancellor said that allowing Heathrow to build a third runway would “create 100,000 jobs”, boost investment and exports and “unlock futher growth”.
She cited a new report by the consultancy Frontier Economics which found it could increase the ***’s potential GDP by 2050 by 0.43%, around £17bn.
That is broadly in line with the findings of an independent commission by Sir Howard Davies in 2015, which concluded a third runway at Heathrow would support *** trade and enhance productivity and push up GDP by 0.65-0.75% by 2050 relative to otherwise.
However, most analysts believe it would likely take many years before shovels went into the ground to start building a new runway, even with new reforms to speed up the planning process.
And the government will have a difficult balancing act to both expand Heathrow and meet its climate goals.
BBC Verify asked the Treasury for its source for the 100,000 jobs figure and it pointed to a 2017 report by the Department for Transport estimating that a new runway at Heathrow could add between 57,000 and 114,000 additional local jobs. Though that report added that “these jobs are not additional at the national level, as some jobs may have been displaced from other airports or other sectors.”
Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor
The chancellor in her speech claimed an Oxford and Cambridge Growth Corridor “could add up to £78bn to the *** economy by 2035”.
This corridor is a resurrection of the previous government’s plans to join Oxford and Cambridge with new transport links and allow those two university and research hubs to expand.
In support of the chancellor’s figure, the Treasury has cited research by an industry group called the Oxford-Cambridge Supercluster.
This research shows that this £78bn is a “cumulative figure” over 10 years, not the boost in a given year.
The analysis suggests the project could add £25bn in Gross Value Added (GVA) a year to the *** economy by 2035.
That would constitute roughly a permanent 1% boost to *** GDP by that date.
EPA
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said that growth is “the defining mission” of his government
Estimates of the impacts of an infrastructure project on growth are inherently uncertain and very sensitive to the assumptions of researchers about what would have happened to growth if it had never been built.
Yet most economists do believe infrastructure projects, especially those that allow already productive places to expand, will ultimately help the *** economy grow more rapidly than otherwise.
Ben Caswell, a senior economist at The National Institute of Economic and Social Research (Niesr), said: “Big infrastructure projects typically deliver growth over the long term, approximately 10 to 20 years.”
“There may be a small demand side boost in the short term when shovels are in the ground, but nothing so significant that you would see it in headline GDP growth figures.
“However, after the project is complete, the supply capacity of the economy is permanently enhanced, and, all other things equal, that delivers higher sustained GDP growth than would have otherwise been.”
Pensions reform
Another reform the chancellor says will be pro-growth is enabling *** companies to access the funds from their “defined benefit pension” pots, held on behalf of their workforces to fund their retirement.
Defined benefit pension schemes guarantee an annual pension payment to retired workers, based on their salary while they were in work.
Many of these defined benefit pension pots have moved into surplus in recent years due to the rise in interest rates since the pandemic, meaning their financial assets (their investments) are greater than their financial liabilities (what they have to pay out to pensioners).
The Treasury has said that approximately 75% of schemes are now in surplus and that the total surplus adds up to £160bn.
The chancellor wants to legislate to allow the firms to use these funds to invest, while keeping safeguards to protect and guarantee workers’ pension pay-outs.
Measuring the size of the surplus of defined benefit scheme depends on various complex assumptions about the scheme and its relationship to the employer.
The official Pension Regulator estimates that on one measurement the size in September 2024 was £207bn, but £137bn on a different measurement.
The Treasury’s estimate is roughly midway between the two.
If such sums were deployed that could, in theory, make a positive difference to overall *** business investment, which is regarded by economists as both a short term and a long term driver of GDP growth.
Total business investment in 2023, according to official data, was £258bn.
But the size of any boost from this pension reform would depend on companies being willing to invest their surpluses, which is subject to great uncertainty as many firms have been looking to offload their defined benefit pension schemes to insurance companies in recent years.

Olympian Gabby Thomas says a group of men have been following her at airports
Olympian Gabby Thomas says a group of men have been following her at airports
Olympic gold medalist Gabby Thomas asked for advice from her social media followers after she says a group of men have been stalking her at airports in multiple cities.
Thomas, a five-time Olympic medalist, said in a TikTok video Tuesday that a group of men have appeared at airports across the country while she’s traveling, harassing her and asking her to sign a stack of pictures. She believes the men are resellers but alleges they have been “aggressive and hostile” when she rejects them.
“It doesn’t matter what city,” Thomas said. “They’ve come when I was traveling to and from Chicago, they’ve come when I’m traveling to and from Miami. And they have my flight information.”
The men, about three to six of them, have shown up at the airport door, she said. But, Thomas said, they have also approached her at her concourse or gate, meaning they appear to have to have a flight ticket and go through airport security.
She says the encounters are particularly frightening when she’s traveling alone. The fact that they seem to know exactly where and when she is traveling, Thomas said, is “freaking” her out.
“What scares me is that they have my flight information even when I don’t even know what time I’m flying out sometimes — I don’t tell anyone my flight information,” Thomas said.
Last year in Paris, Thomas ran in her second Olympics and brought home three gold medals. It was a redemption from her second and third place finishes at the Tokyo Games a few years prior.
Many found Thomas to be an inspiration as she trained for the global competition in between taking neurobiology courses at Harvard University and volunteer work at a health clinic in Austin, Texas.
Now, Thomas is turning to the more than 260,000 followers for guidance to help her feel safe again while traveling.
“I don’t know what to do,” Thomas said. “Any advice is welcome.”
Commenters expressed sympathy and acknowledged the situation is alarming. Fellow Olympian Ilona Maher wrote that it was “so scary.”
“These guys are done,” Thomas said in a reply to Maher. “Once I figure this out they won’t be harassing anyone else.”
Tennis player Coco Gauff said she has had the same experience.
“This happens to me too, I don’t know how it happens,” Gauff wrote. “My theory is maybe someone at the airport tips them off.”
Others offered advice including to contact the FBI and to check her accounts for any connected apps that the men could be accessing.
One commenter suggested she make a report to her local police and to airport security to start a record of the encounters. Another said Thomas should see if recording the men would scare them off.
She shared a video in reply of two men at Chicago O’Hare International Airport. In the video she narrates that the men were “stalking” her. One man pulls a hood over his face and walks away as she records.
“I took this video once when they were following me past TSA,” Thomas wrote. “I’ll see who I can report it to. I’ll continue to take pictures and video. It scared them away.”
