Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones retires from politics after 15 years
Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones will quit politics at the next election, drawing his 15-year stint in parliament to a close.
Mr Jones, also the Financial Services Minister, was elected as the Whitlam MP in 2010 — an electorate that covers part of the Illawarra and the Southern Highlands.
He becomes the fourth high-ranking Labor member to quit ahead of the next election — due by May 17 — after Linda Burney, Brendan O’Connor and Bill Shorten all announced their resignations last year.
In a statement, Mr Jones said he was proud of his track record, and thanked Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for “his friendship and support over many decades”.
“I want to thank the members of the *********** Labor Party, whose values I hold dear and have always attempted to advance in my role as a Member of Parliament, Shadow Minister and Minister,” he said.
“To my family and friends, whose love and support has enabled me to represent our great community with the dedication it deserves, I thank you wholeheartedly. “
Mr Jones won the seat with a comfortable 10.1 per cent margin at the 2022 election, but this has narrowed to 8.3 per cent with redistribution.
More to come.

Mayor involved in massive brawl at board meeting
Mayor involved in massive brawl at board meeting
An Illinois mayor became embroiled in a massive brawl at a town meeting when someone in attendance reportedly called her a “b***h.”
The fight broke out at the Thornton Township Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday evening and saw Supervisor Tiffany Heynard lose a shoe and get thrown to the ground.
After the comment was directed towards her by activist Jedidiah Brown, Henyard’s boyfriend, Kamal Woods, confronted the man, causing the scuffle to break out, according to FOX32.
Henyard, who also holds the position of Mayor of Dolton, reportedly pushed her table to one side and rushed to the back of the room where she allegedly got involved in the brawl, the outlet reported.
Security officers swiftly broke up the squabble and police arrived and at least one person was escorted out, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Police said they had not made any arrests after the incident.
This week’s incident was caught on video and shows numerous attendees joining the altercation as few bystanders attempt to break it up. The Independent has contacted Heynard’s office for comment.
Her lawyers said on Tuesday that Heynard had been “verbally assaulted, and her personal safety threatened” at the meeting.
Tiffany Heynard’s photo on the Village of Dolton’s website (Village of Dolton)
On Wednesday morning, trustees issued the following comments about the incident: “We are deeply disturbed by the events that transpired during last night’s board meeting.”
“As public officials, we are entrusted with leading through professionalism, integrity and respect. What began as a productive discussion on critical community matters descended into chaos and violence, behavior that has no place in Thornton Township and will not be tolerated.”
Henyard has become embroiled in controversy after her government reportedly went millions of dollars into debt without explanation from her office. On Monday, former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot revealed findings of an investigation into Henyard’s alleged mismanagement of village finances.
Lightfood found Henyard allegedly mismanaged funds through “excessive” spending, hid financial information from trustees and the public and disregarded transparency guardrails.
“Beginning at least as early as late 2021, there was a concerted, systematic effort on behalf of Mayor Henyard and others in her administration to hide the true financial condition of the Village of Dolton from the trustees and from members of the public,” Lightfoot recently told local officials.
Among the findings were $779,000 in village debt without receipts or an explanation of what was bought and a $171,000 bill for unexplained travel expenses to Las Vegas for a convention held by the International Council of Shopping Centers. Additionally, Henyard’s government reportedly spent $51,000 on area restaurants and simply wrote them off as meals or doughnuts.

Lidl cleared to push forward plans for first Northern Ireland pub
Lidl cleared to push forward plans for first Northern Ireland pub
A High Court has cleared supermarket chain Lidl to push forward with plans for its first ever in-store pub after rejecting a legal challenge to the proposal in Northern Ireland.
A judge dismissed an appeal against the retailer being granted a provisional licence for operating a bar within its store in Dundonald, County Down.
The appeal, from another trader Philip Russell Ltd, said Lidl had failed to show there are inadequate licenced premises near the site.
Mr Justice Colton said the fact that “the application was a novel one is not a reason for refusing it”.
In 2020, Lidl secured planning permission for a tap room on the premises in Dundonald, just outside Belfast.
The proposed scheme involved reaching agreement with the owners of a local bar to surrender that licence and spending £410,000 for a new in-store pub alongside an off-sales area.
Under Northern Ireland licencing laws, no new alcohol ***** licences can be granted unless another one is surrendered.
Lidl was denied permission for an off-licence in the store a number of years earlier, but has now said it is determined to run a profitable pub if the new application is successful.
Philip Russell Ltd, which runs several off-licences across Northern Ireland, objected to the plans.
It claimed Lidl had failed to establish an inadequacy of licenced premises in the area, as required under the Licencing (Northern Ireland) Order 1996.
It was also alleged to be an impermissible attempt to circumvent the legislation by effectively making another application for an off-licence.
Ruling on the dispute, Mr Justice Colton determined that Lidl had established the necessary inadequacy.
He pointed out that if the application is successful, there will be only one licensed premises in a vicinity where two pubs previously operated.
The proposed new premises would be in the centre of an area with established shopping and transport facilities, along with an increasing adult population.
“It may well be that it will not meet the full demand for licenced premises within the vicinity given its size and lack of food provision,” the judge said.
“That however does not mean that (Lidl) fails to establish inadequacy.”
Dismissing the appeal, Mr Justice Colton held that Lidl had made a bona fide application to operate the premises as a public on/off-licence.
“It will invest a significant sum of money, at least £410,000 into fitting out the public house,” he said.
“I accept that it has concluded that the public house will be profitable, knowing that if it closed through lack of profitability an evitable consequence would be that the off-licence permission would lapse following any such decision.
“I am satisfied that it meets the statutory requirements and there is no good reason for refusing the application.”

What we know about Trump’s claim that the U.S. planned to spend $50 million on condoms for Gaza
What we know about Trump’s claim that the U.S. planned to spend $50 million on condoms for Gaza
Both President Trump and his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, have claimed that the administration has stopped a plan to spend $50 million on condoms for Gaza as part of the new administration’s reevaluation of federal funding.
“We identified and stopped $50 million being sent to Gaza to buy condoms for ******,” he said Wednesday. “They’ve used them as a method of making bombs.”
The U.S. Department of State said in 2021 that ****** and other militant groups have a history of launching incendiary balloons toward Israel. Previous photos taken by The Associated Press in 2020 show masked men attaching incendiary devices to gas-filled condoms and balloons.
However, neither Trump nor officials in his administration have provided evidence of the program they are referring to or whether ****** has used condoms as a weapon in its war with Israel. The Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Agency of International Development (USAID) have not responded to questions from CBS News. Available figures from the State Department show that previous shipments for contraception, including condoms, to the Middle East cost far less than $50 million.
Without specifying whether she was referring to a program that included the $50 million figure, State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that a federal pause in foreign assistance included preventing $102 million in “unjustified funding” to a contractor in Gaza, “including money for contraception.”
In an email to reporters, Bruce added that the administration stopped $102 million in funding to the International Medical Corps for Gaza.
In a news release, the International Medical Corps, a global aid organization based in Los Angeles, responded that it has received about $68 million from USAID since Oct. 7, 2023, and has used the funding to operate two field hospitals in Gaza.
“No US government funding was used to procure or distribute condoms,” the organization’s statement said.
The latest available report online on contraceptives and ******* shipments from USAID, from fiscal year 2023, states that the agency’s only shipment of contraceptives to the Middle East since fiscal year 2019 was made to Jordan and cost $45,680. The shipment contained injectable and oral contraceptives, not condoms.
According to USAID reports, shipments of contraceptives to the Middle East do not happen annually. In the decade before fiscal year 2023, there were only two shipments, including one in fiscal year 2019 and one in fiscal year 2013. In fiscal year 2019, USAID spent a total of $1.1 million on contraceptives for Yemen, with condoms comprising 4% of the total value.
It is unclear whether there were any planned contraceptive shipments to Gaza for fiscal year 2025. But the total value of all contraceptives shipped from the U.S. from USAID was $60 million in fiscal year 2023, which included shipments to 23 countries.

100-year-old Providence church consumed in devastating fire
100-year-old Providence church consumed in devastating fire
PROVIDENCE − A fire destroyed a century-old church building in the Elmwood neighborhood Wednesday morning, according to Providence Fire Chief Derek Silva.
Providence firefighters responded to the Impact Center Providence Church, on the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Greenwich Street at about 11 a.m. Wednesday.
There, they encountered a handful of workers, who had been involved with the rehabilitation of the church and helped them exit the burning church, Silva said.
No civilians or firefighters were injured, he added.
Firefighters have no reason to believe the fire was incendiary or intentionally set, Silva said, emphasizing that the cause of the fire is the focus of an investigation.
A fire tears into Impact Center Providence Church in Elmwood on Wednesday
Church built at outset of last century
The firefighting effort was unable to save the church structure, which was built in 1914 or 1915, said Silva, who anticipated that the church’s steeple was about to fall in.
The building’s exterior brick walls might survive “but there’s nothing left inside this thing,” Silva said.
“It’s a total loss,” he said.

Xbox revenue fell 7% in Q2 as hardware sales dropped 29%
Xbox revenue fell 7% in Q2 as hardware sales dropped 29%
Microsoft has reported a 7% revenue decline for its gaming division during its second fiscal quarter.
The division generated $6.6 billion in revenue during the three months ended December 31, 2024, which was down $530 million year-over-year.
The decline was attributed to a 29% drop in Xbox hardware revenue, driven by a lower volume of consoles sold during the quarter.
Xbox content and services revenue increased 2% year-over-year, fueled by growth in Game Pass.
Microsoft completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard in October 2023, in the process taking ownership of franchises including Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, Diablo and Overwatch.
That was followed by a significant rise in sales for its gaming division during Q2 last year, as well as the following three quarters.
The three months ended in December 2024 mark the first time it has been possible to compare quarters since the completion of the $75.4 billion Activision deal.
Microsoft will hold its Q2 earnings conference call at 2.30pm PT / 5.30pm ET / 10.30pm GMT, when CEO Satya Nadella may offer more insight into the Xbox division’s performance, and the company will provide guidance for Q3.
$465 million was spent on Microsoft games over December, making the company the world’s biggest publisher across PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, according to data from Ampere which was published earlier today.
Microsoft has been putting increased focus on its multi-format strategy, and 64% of consumer spending on its games in December was on PlayStation formats (driven by Call of Duty).
Ampere said that Microsoft was comfortably ahead of second-placed Electronic Arts, which generated $366 million over the same *******.

Chloe Kelly: England forward says future ‘not at Manchester City’ before transfer window deadline
Chloe Kelly: England forward says future ‘not at Manchester City’ before transfer window deadline
England forward Chloe Kelly says she wants “to be happy again” as she seeks a move away from Manchester City before Thursday’s transfer window deadline.
Kelly, who has started only one Women’s Super League game for City this season, said that she wants to put herself in the best position to represent her country as the Lionesses aim to defend their European Championship title this summer.
It is understood that Manchester City are open to allowing the 27-year-old to leave and that the player is considering an offer.
The WSL transfer window closes at 23:00 GMT on Thursday, 30 January.
With her City contract expiring in June, Kelly said she has “accepted my future is not at this club beyond then”.
In an Instagram message posted little more than 24 hours before Thursday’s deadline, Kelly wrote: “With the Euros fast approaching, this summer is a huge one and I want to be in a position to give it my best shot to represent my country.
“However, to be dictated whom I can and can’t join with only four months left of the football season is having a huge impact on not only my career by my mental wellbeing.
“The situation has been dragged on for too long, it’s disappointing and not right.”
Kelly scored the winning goal against Germany when England created history by winning their first major women’s tournament at Euro 2022.
She said she could not “control someone’s negative behaviour” towards her as she sought to clarify her position on Wednesday night – although she did not name any individual.
Her only WSL start this season came against West Ham back in October.
“I’m at a pivotal point in my life and my career is so important to me. [It] is very disappointing that the sport we love can make you feel this way especially after there’s been so much growth in our sport,” Kelly said.
“I am human and I have and will give everything to the game that I love.
“Ultimately, I just want to be happy again.”

Champions League: Villa Park bedlam sums up gripping Celtic campaign
Champions League: Villa Park bedlam sums up gripping Celtic campaign
While Celtic’s fightback and competitiveness was admirable, the defeat was a reminder of the unforgiveable nature of playing the best in the Champions League.
Villa scored four, missed a penalty, hit a post, had one cleared off the line, racking up a hefty expected goals rating of 3.62.
Celtic played on the edge of chaos as they pressed and tried to move the ball quickly. At times it worked, but there were also a lot of mistakes.
They were caught in possession trying to play out from the back for Villa’s second.
And Liam Scales was punished ruthlessly for pushing too high up the pitch for the third as Villa easily broke through on the counter.
Auston Trusty erratically slid in to give away a penalty, while a poor header from the American in the first half lead to Jacob Ramsey hitting a post.
Young defender Dane Murray – only recently returned from Queen’s Park – was robbed in his own box for the fourth in stoppage time.
There were plenty more moments when Celtic got themselves into trouble.
Without their best centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers it was always going to be a tough task defensively, while Daizen Maeda’s defensive output was missed as Villa got joy down the flanks in the first half.
Maeda will miss the first leg of the next round due to suspension, and with Kyogo Furuhashi away to Rennes, and left-back Alex Valle joining him out the door, the last few days of the transfer window are big for the club.
With Real or Bayern coming to town, they need to make sure they are as strong as possible from back to front.
Dortmund aside, Celtic have been competitive and adaptable throughout this campaign, and reaching the play-off round is just rewards for that.

Atari’s limited-edition watch has a display that’s out of this world
Atari’s limited-edition watch has a display that’s out of this world
Atari has teamed up with the watchmaker Nubeo to release a limited-edition, Asteroids-themed watch — and it’s indeed a swanky timepiece. It’s available for order now for $499 and is expected to begin shipping in early February. A watch like this would be a great gift for the retro gamer in your life, especially since only 700 will be manufactured.
With a look and feel that’s distinctly 1979, the watch face is represented by multiple rings and a spaceship in the center. The spaceship slowly rotates and fires a constant stream of lasers that represent the second hand, while a pair of UFOs on the other rings represent the minutes and the hour.
Colorful asteroids dot the watchface, printed with Swiss Super-LumiNova paint that results in a glow-in-the-dark effect. The asteroids move around the face throughout the day, too. If you didn’t know any better, you could almost swear a game of Asteroids was being played out on your wrist.
Image used with permission by copyright holder
The watch itself is 50mm in diameter and 16mm thick, so it’s a bit larger than the Apple Watch, though similar in size to the Galaxy Watch. It comes with a two-year warranty and is water resistant up to a whopping 21 atmospheres, or ATMs. For reference, that’s about 210 meters — although you probably shouldn’t swim that deep with this watch on.
Please enable Javascript to view this content
This isn’t Atari’s first attempt at branching out. The company debuted the GameStation Go at CES 2025 and launched the Atari 7800+ late last year.
Curious? You’d better act fast. While there are five different colored bands to choose from, three colors — Nebula Blue, Nova Nightfall, and Plasma Pumpkin — are already sold out. Only the Supernova Red and Celestial Citrine are still available for purchase. You can pick one of these up yourself from Atari’s website.

The RTX 5060 Ti might fall into a familiar VRAM trap
The RTX 5060 Ti might fall into a familiar VRAM trap
It seems that Nvidia is set to follow a similar approach to the RTX 4060 Ti launch by offering the upcoming RTX 5060 Ti in two configurations: 8GB and 16GB models. This information comes from a recent listing on the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC) website, spotted by @Olrak29_ (X formerly Twitter) which additionally confirms that the standard RTX 5060 will launch in a single configuration featuring 8GB of VRAM.
Nvidia is yet to confirm the existence of the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti, but it is expected that there are plans to unveil the GPUs in March. This information also falls in line with a report from last month which pointed out similar memory configurations and the inclusion of the PG152 printed circuit board (PCB) with the GB206 GPU die.
pic.twitter.com/4rySh6rw1k
— Everest (@Olrak29_) January 27, 2025
Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming
If you remember, both 16GB and 8GB versions of the RTX 4060 Ti received terrible feedback as they offered minor improvements over the previous generation. The RTX 5060 Ti could face a similar reception although we are sceptical that the move to GDDR7 memory may provide much-needed improvement. With both variants expected to offer 448 GB/s of bandwidth—a 55% increase over the RTX 4060 Ti—the new cards could have a significant performance boost.
It is also concerning that Nvidia will once again limit the lower end of its GPU lineup to just 8GB of RAM. As pointed out by my colleague Jacob in his overview of the RTX 4060 Ti, modern gaming titles are pushing their limits. Having just 8GB of VRAM, especially on a 128-bit memory bus, may not deliver the best results in games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Resident Evil 4, The Last of Us Part One, and Halo Infinite.
How much of an improvement will the upcoming RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti offer over their previous-gen counterparts? There’s still some time before we find that out. However, if we consider the performance improvements gained by the RTX 5090 over the 4090, the new RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti should offer similar performance uplifts.

DeSantis signals he will veto immigration bill passed by Florida GOP lawmakers
DeSantis signals he will veto immigration bill passed by Florida GOP lawmakers
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) said Wednesday he plans to veto a Republican-sponsored immigration bill that was passed by the Florida Legislature this week, marking the latest salvo in his feud with state GOP lawmakers.
“The veto pen is ready,” DeSantis said in a post on social platform X following the legislation’s passage Tuesday evening.
“The bill that narrowly passed the Florida legislature last night fails to honor our promises to voters, fails to meet the moment, and would actually weaken state immigration enforcement,” the governor wrote.
DeSantis’s veto threat comes amid a war of words between DeSantis and state House Speaker Daniel Perez (R) and state Senate President Ben Albritton (R). In a stunning move Monday, Perez and Albritton gaveled out a special session proposed by DeSantis to implement President Trump’s immigration agenda.
Instead, the state Legislature leaders introduced the Tackling and Reforming Unlawful Migration Policy Act, also known as the TRUMP Act. The legislation notably calls to make the state’s Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson the chief immigration officer. DeSantis has called the legislation watered down.
Like DeSantis’s proposals, the legislation would increase penalties for noncitizens who vote and those who aid noncitizens in voting. Additionally, it would up penalties for individuals who commit a crime while in the U.S. illegally and strips in-state tuition for students at public universities who came into the country illegally.
And while the bill also creates a chief of immigration, the most glaring difference is that it establishes Simpson as the chief immigration officer. Simpson, who has been floated as a potential 2026 gubernatorial pick, is not a DeSantis ally.
The events mark a potential new era for DeSantis, who has enjoyed loyalty from Republicans in the red state, as he seeks to curry favor with Trump. Both sides of the debate have lobbied with Trump over the issue.

Amazon hasn’t officially carried Nintendo-published games since Spring 2024, so you’ll only find third-party listings on Amazon once a Nintendo game launches. But you can use your Amazon account to purchase games from Woot, which makes things extremely simple for new Woot customers.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD has the same joyful cover art as the Nintendo Wii and 3DS versions.
Woot has a ton of Nintendo Switch game deals in general these days, including the other traditional Donkey Kong platformer with a physical version for Switch: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which is discounted to only $42. You can also snag Mario vs. Donkey Kong, which sees DK return to his villainous roots, for $42.
Check out the list below to get deals on other recent Nintendo games, such as the latest Zelda game and two Mario role-playing games.
Essentially presented as the “definitive” edition of the platformer, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD offers the original challenge of the Wii version while also giving players the option to play with the friendlier “Modern Mode” settings from the 3DS edition. It also contains all of the extra levels from the 3DS version. Even with Modern Mode enabled, DKC Returns is one of the more challenging contemporary Nintendo platformers. If you liked Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, you will almost certainly have a great time running through the 80-level, nine-world gauntlet solo or cooperatively with a partner.

Microsoft is rolling out Teams phishing protection for all next month
Microsoft is rolling out Teams phishing protection for all next month
Microsoft
Microsoft alerted Microsoft 365 admins that the phishing alert features will reach all users by mid-February, as Bleeping Computer reports. The new feature will be enabled by default and alert users when an attack is detected.
However, you can only see the phishing attack alerts if you have external Teams access, a feature that allows users in your organization to talk to others who are not part of your organization. Even though the rollout started in mid-November, it has not reached all users, but Microsoft hopes to achieve that goal by mid-February. Microsoft also advises users to familiarize themselves with the new high-risk Accept/Block screen.
If you get the message, you must preview it and decide whether to accept it. If you accept it, Microsoft will send you another warning message reminding you of the possible risk before you accept it again. Admins can also access the audit log to view the detected phishing attacks that employ this technique.
Suppose you don’t have the phishing alert feature yet and don’t need to communicate with anyone outside your team. In that case, it’s recommended that you turn off the feature from the Microsoft Teams Admin Center, followed by External Access. But if you need to use the feature, admins can add certain domains to an allowed list to reduce the risk of exploitation. Time will tell when the feature will reach all users, but hopefully, it’ll be soon. But when that time comes, threat actors such as the Russian group who bombarded a user’s email box with thousands of emails before calling and posing as an IT support worker are going to have a hard time reaching their goal.
Microsoft Teams has taken other measures to keep its users safe, such as the Safe Links feature that protects users against malicious links. We’ll see what other features it decides to add to Teams.
