  1. Canada should appoint ‘border czar’ to work collaboratively with U.S., Alberta premier says Canada should appoint ‘border czar’ to work collaboratively with U.S., Alberta premier says As the threat of 25 per cent tariffs looms over Canada, Alberta’s premier says Ottawa should appoint a “border czar” to work collaboratively with the United States. Danielle Smith told reporters Wednesday that a ********* border czar would work with American counterpart Tom Homan to crack down on fentanyl and ******** crossings — something U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly said is a major issue. 2:06 Trump’s border czar to focus on ********* side, says it ‘can’t be a gateway to terrorists’ Smith said having a border czar, on top of a $1.3-billion border security plan pledged by Ottawa, would further help Canada’s chances to avoid the tariffs that Trump has threatened to impose on Saturday. Story continues below advertisement “The one thing that we can do this week, in just the next couple of days, to have the best chance to avoid tariffs is to show clear and unequivocal action to secure the border,” Smith said. She said a retired military general would be the right fit for the role. Get daily National news Get the day’s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day. “We need someone who understands military operations, who understands deployment, who understands the seriousness with which we have to take this issue.” Smith said she would endorse Alberta’s interim top bureaucrat, Paul Wynnyk, for the position. Wynnyk is a longtime bureaucrat who has served as Alberta’s deputy minister of health and municipal affairs since his 38-year career in the Armed Forces. Smith said creating a border czar position likely wouldn’t appease Trump, but it wouldn’t hurt Canada’s chances either. “I think there’ll be other things that we will need to work on, and we will do so. “But I am convinced, after speaking with dozens of elected representatives, administrative administration officials and the president himself that this is the most important first step.” Trump’s pick to lead the U.S. Department of Commerce, billionaire financier Howard Lutnick, told the U.S. Senate during his Wednesday confirmation hearing that he sees the tariffs as a way to get Canada to take action on border security. He said he believes Canada and Mexico are “acting swiftly” on border security “and if they execute it there will be no tariff, and if they don’t then there will be.” Smith said Lutnick’s comments suggest Canada should continue to make sure Americans understand that Canada takes those concerns seriously. “If (Trump’s) senior trade person says, ‘Be serious about the border,’ let’s be serious about the border,” Smith said. “And then let’s see if that manages to avoid tariffs.” Smith said her government invited American network Fox News to the Coutts border crossing to help demonstrate Alberta’s efforts to beef up security. Tesla CFO says tariffs would ‘have an impact’ on profitability Tesla CFO says tariffs would ‘have an impact’ on profitability U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and Elon Musk watch the launch of the sixth test flight of the SpaceX Starship rocket in Brownsville, Texas, on Nov. 19, 2024. Brandon Bell | Via Reuters President Donald Trump campaigned on a promise to slap tariffs on goods from many top trading partners. Elon Musk’s electric vehicle company may feel some of the pain. During Tesla’s earnings call on Wednesday, Chief Financial Officer Vaibhav Taneja said the company’s profitability could take a hit if the new administration implements tariffs. “Over the years we’ve tried to localize our supply chain in every market, but we are still reliant on parts from across the world for all our businesses,” Taneja said. He said the “imposition of tariffs” would “have an impact on our business and profitability.” President Trump, who returned to the White House last week, is weighing tariffs on China, Mexico and Canada in an effort to protect U.S. business interests. Tariffs were a popular tool in the first Trump administration, and were used on goods including solar panels, steel and aluminum. It remained a major talking point on the campaign trail. The president has touted a 60% tariff on China, and over the weekend threatened Colombia with a 25% tariff on goods coming into the U.S. Musk was Trump’s biggest backer, pouring $277 million into his campaign and in support of other Republican candidates. Musk is now running the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and many analysts have speculated that his tight relationship with the president could benefit his companies. 4. Why leaving X can be a tricky decision for companies Why leaving X can be a tricky decision for companies Dan Rosney BBC Business Reporter Getty Images Elon Musk bought Twitter in 2022 On March 21, 2006 the first ever tweet was posted by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey: “Just setting up my twttr”. It was a simple introduction to a brand new platform. Backed by celebrities, it was different to other social media sites, like MySpace or Facebook, because you could interact with any user without them having to approve a request. Companies rushed to join the service, hoping to get closer to their customers. “If you were a brand that wanted to be part of any cultural moments that were happening, Twitter was a great place to be,” Alex Wilson, a senior strategist at the marketing agency Pitch tells BBC News. On June 4, 2010 Elon Musk, the owner of Space X, logged on for the first time: “Please ignore prior tweets, as that was someone pretending to be me This is actually me.” Twelve years later he would buy the platform for $44bn (£38.1bn), reshape the algorithm, reinstate banned accounts, repurpose the policy around “free speech”, and rename it X. He also fired thousands of staff – around 80% of the workforce. Since Mr Musk’s takeover companies have been choosing to leave the platform in what’s been termed “the great X-odus”. One of their main concerns was the content that would be seen around their posts that users could screengrab and share. For example, between June 2022 and February 2023 antisemitic posts on X doubled, according to research by the Institute of Strategic Dialogue. More recently in the ***, Mr Musk’s posts about British politics have stirred up controversy. In particular, his posts on the subject of grooming gangs put pressure on the government, which announced a review of the issue. “There is no doubt that Musk’s ownership of X is having an impact on public opinion in the ***,” Luke Tryl from the research group More In Common tells BBC News. However, according to More In Common, only 16% of Brits believe his interventions are designed to achieve justice for victims, whereas 44% think he is doing it for attention, and his approval rating with the British public sits at -35. Pitch Marketing X has become “less relevant” across the world says Alex Wilson The changing tone of X and the controversy surrounding its owner have spurred some firms to leave the platform and others have pulled their advertising as well. At the end of 2023 firms including Apple, IBM and Disney paused advertisement on the platform. Others brands including Unilever and Mars were sued by Mr Musk, who accused them of unlawfully agreeing to boycott the site. “It’s broadly fair to say Twitter is becoming less relevant across the world,” Mr Wilson says in the Pitch office in central London, with posters of clients ranging from charities, telecommunications, and sports leagues. “It’s been a very long time since clients came to us and say: ‘Twitter’s fun and exciting. We want to be in that space’. “Unless you are targeting specific audiences, maybe certain political audiences or sports – football is still big on Twitter – it’s hard to see the value in it.” Getty Images ******* football club FC St. Pauli left X in late 2024 Trump’s election victory has prompted other organisations to leave X, with others considering their positions as Mr Musk’s influence in the White House grows. Beginning in 2013, ******* football team FC St Pauli, which plays in Germany’s top league, the Bundesliga, posted more than 60,000 times, racking up nearly 250,000 followers. But less than 10 days after Trump’s return to the White House was confirmed, the club posted: “You can find our statement about saying goodbye to X on BlueSky. Feel free to follow us there. We’re out of here.” “We discussed the decision for a year. We were mostly posting content with counter speech to hate. We had a lot of content for diversity, anti-racism, and anti-sexism,” club spokesperson, Patrick Gensing told the BBC. “We have seen assaults on X, antisemitism, conspiracy theories,” he says. The argument that such posts are justified by freedom of speech, does not convince him. “We don’t think racism is freedom of speech,” says Mr Gensing. One of the most recent departures from X was by the *** arm of BMW. In late January it announced it was no longer posting on X and directed people to its posts on Facebook and Instagram. There’s no definitive way to know how many brands are choosing to leave or reduce their posts on the platform. When approached, X did not respond to the points raised in this article. But last year Mr Musk claimed X had 600 million monthly active users, and said the platform maintains its “purpose is to serve the public conversation”. Mr Musk “has been clear that X is willing to make trade-offs to adopt a more open, less moderated approach compared to Twitter”, says Goran Calic, visiting scholar at Harvard Business School. Getty Images X remains useful for the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority But leaving X can have negative consequences for organisations and their relationships with customers. “When users leave, the impact depends on who is leaving and why. A local authority posting news provides significant value to the network. If such an account leaves, it can hurt both the platform and its users,” he tells BBC News. “Users protesting by leaving should weigh the broader social implications of staying versus exiting.” For some organisations who need to get their message out quickly, X still has value that other competitors simply can’t offer. “For us there is still that value [on being on X],” says Andrew Cassidy, senior director of digital strategy and engagement at the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). “We try to match where our riders are. When people are tweeting at the MBTA someone can provide a definitive answer in the moment. Our broadcasting system is exclusively tied into our X account, but we still field customer service questions across other platforms.” “Our focus is providing customer service to the largest number of riders that we possibly can,” Mr Cassidy says. “With the current landscape being what it is, X still feeds that need.” It’s “unthinkable”, Mr Gensing explains, not to have a presence on social media in 2025. “We have to view all the platforms critically, it’s not only X. The companies behind them set up the rules of the game and they can change them.” More Technology of Business Source link #leaving #tricky #decision #companies Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. Warning high borrowing costs may mean tax rises or spending cuts Warning high borrowing costs may mean tax rises or spending cuts Higher borrowing costs for the government may mean tax rises or spending cuts if it wants to stick to its own self-imposed rules, a leading economic think tank has warned. According to a report from the Resolution Foundation, the government is spending £7bn a year more paying interest on its debt than it was at the time of the Budget. As a result, the think tank said higher tax or cuts “may be needed” if the government wants to keep its promise not to spend more day-to-day than it brings in through tax. A Treasury spokesperson told the BBC its commitment to its fiscal rules is “non-negotiable”. The report comes after Chancellor Rachel Reeves revealed her plan to boost the economy through backing a series of infrastructure projects, including a third runway at Heathrow. Government borrowing costs began rising after the Budget last Autumn. The Resolution Foundation said the rise has been “primarily driven by international factors”, with US and European government debt also rising. Other economists have said higher borrowing costs are at least partly a reaction to sluggish growth in the *** economy. The increase has been much lower than following the 2022 mini-Budget, and borrowing levels have fallen since hitting their highest levels in several years earlier this month. However, the Resolution Foundation said the risk of the government of breaking its own fiscal rules “remains on a knife edge” because borrowing costs remain higher than in the Autumn. Resolution Foundation research director James Smith said Chancellor Rachel Reeves will need to meet the fiscal rules “or risk further market jitters”. “While the chancellor is rightly focused on fleshing out her long-term strategy for economic growth, tough short-term decisions, including fresh tax rises or spending cuts, may also be needed in the coming weeks to demonstrate her commitment to sustainable public finances,” he added. The government has already said it wants to cut down on “waste” and has said tax rises might be a possibility. Reeves said in December departments would be asked to identify 5% “efficiency savings” as part of a review to set their budgets for the coming years. “The chancellor has already shown that tough decisions on spending will be taken, with the spending review to root out waste ongoing,” a Treasury spokesperson told the BBC. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer did not rule out more tax rises when asked by the BBC in December. “If you look at Covid and Ukraine, everyone knows there are things we can’t see now, but I can tell you our intention was to do the tough stuff in that Budget, not keep coming back,” he said. 9. Socceroos hopeful Jed Drew seals European move Socceroos hopeful Jed Drew seals European move In-form A-League Men star Jed Drew has sealed a move to the Austrian Bundesliga in a bid to bolster his shot for a Socceroos call-up. Drew is tipped to join top-flight side TSV Hartberg after Macarthur FC confirmed his departure on Thursday. The 21-year-old sets sail off the back of a thrilling campaign in the *********** domestic league. After debuting in 2022, Socceroos hopeful Drew leads the league with seven assists and has scored six goals in 13 matches. He is the third Macarthur player to secure an overseas move during the January transfer window, joining Ariath Piol (Real Salt Lake) and Oli Jones (Randers). The transfer fee for Drew has not yet been disclosed. “My time at the Bulls has been unbelievable,” Drew said in a club statement. “I’m so grateful for the club giving me a chance and to give me my debut a couple years back was such a good feeling. “Starting in the NPL side a few years back, I really found my enjoyment for the game again that year.” Drew departs with Australia Cup champions Macarthur sitting fourth on the table, despite a tumultuous off-season headlined by a spot-fixing investigation into some of the club’s leading players. Former captain Ulises Davila and midfield duo Kearyn Baccus and Clayton Lewis have all been charged and are due to face court in the coming months. Drew was named in court documents relating to the allegations but has not been arrested or charged, with NSW Police previously stating that the winger is not considered a suspect in the case. “It wasn’t the greatest year last year, but the club really made sure I was in a good headspace coming back into the pre-season this year,” Drew said in a statement. “I think the group of players this season have been the best group we’ve had.” Drew moves to Europe as Socceroos coach Tony Popovic mulls the make up of his squad ahead of the World Cup qualifiers against Indonesia and China in March. Bulls captain Germain endorsed Drew for a national team call-up. “I hope in the future, he will go maybe with the Socceroos – he deserves it,” Germain said on Thursday. “He’s still young, but he has shown (quality) in the last six months with a lot of goals and a lot of assists. “For the club, it’s a big loss, but at least it’s a big opportunity for him and even for the club to make money. “It’s like this in Australia when you have a good, young player with a lot of quality, for sure, big clubs or clubs in Europe will watch them and try to find them.” Source link #Socceroos #hopeful #Jed #Drew #seals #European #move Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  11. Abortion opponents praise RFK Jr., after he vows to follow Trump Abortion opponents praise RFK Jr., after he vows to follow Trump Abortion opponents praised Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday, after he vowed at a Senate hearing to implement “whatever” position President Trump takes on regulating abortion pills, if confirmed as the next secretary of health and human services. Kennedy’s pledge comes as conservatives have stepped up pressure on the Trump administration to force the Food and Drug Administration to roll back decisions that eased restrictions on the abortion pill mifepristone, also known as Mifeprex. If confirmed as head of the department that oversees the FDA, Kennedy would have broad authority over how the pills are regulated, among a number of powers that HHS has to affect access to abortion nationwide. “Today, we received clear signals that the prolife movement can work with RFK Junior. Acknowledging that every abortion is a tragedy left my team applauding,” John Mize, head of the conservative group Americans United for Life, said in a statement. Mize’s group led a “coalition of leading pro-life organizations” ahead of the hearing that called on the Trump administration to step up restrictions on the abortion pill or pull it from the U.S. market altogether, ending access to the medication abortion option, even in states where abortion is legal. “President Trump has asked me to study the safety of mifepristone. He has not yet taken a stand on how to regulate it. Whatever he does, I will implement those policies and I will work with this committee, make those policies make sense,” Kennedy told the Senate Committee on Finance. Kennedy also told the committeee that the president had “made it clear to me that he wants me to look at safety issues, and I’ll ask NIH and FDA to do that.” Democrats on the Senate panel expressed alarm about Kennedy’s apparent openness to restricting mifepristone. “Women deserve to know if Mr. Kennedy will abuse his power as our country’s chief health officer to essentially implement a national abortion ban by restricting access to the safe and legal medication,” said Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon, the ranking member on the committee. After the hearing, a spokesperson for Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America said the group was looking forward to Kennedy’s second round Thursday before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. “We were encouraged by the questions asked and the answers given,” said Kelsey Pritchard, the group’s political communications director, in an email. Not all conservative organizations were persuaded by Kennedy’s answers at the hearing. The group Advancing American Freedom, backed by former Vice President Mike Pence, doubled down Wednesday on calls for senators to reject Kennedy’s nomination. “The American people deserve an HHS Secretary with a firm commitment to protecting life, who doesn’t fall for or promote health-related misinformation,” the group said on X. Democrats also pointed to Kennedy’s long record of voicing support for abortion, including a previous statement that he supported abortion up to full term. “You have clearly stated in the past that bodily autonomy is one of your core values. The question is, do you stand for that value or not? When was it that you decided to sell out the values you’ve had your whole life in order to be given power by President Trump,” New Hampshire Democratic Senator Maggie Hassan asked Kennedy at the hearing. Kennedy said multiple times during the hearing that he now agrees “with President Trump that every abortion is a tragedy” and serves “at the pleasure of the president.” “President Trump has told me that he wants to end late-term abortions. And that he wants to protect conscience exemptions and that he wants to end federal funding for abortions here or abroad,” he said. Other HHS authorities over abortion Beyond the FDA’s regulation on mifepristone, it would be up to Kennedy to sign off on other changes called for by conservatives around abortion policy, including limits on how money is used under the so-called Title X funding for family planning clinics. He pledged at the hearing to “support President Trump’s policies on Title X.” Under the first Trump administration, rules levied by HHS on Title X resulted in Planned Parenthood’s departure from the funding program, decrying the rules as a “gag order” on providers referring patients to abortion services. Another major way the department has wielded its authority in the past on abortion has been through the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, or EMTALA. The Biden administration used the law to sue states with sweeping abortion bans, saying the laws were blocking doctors from offering care to stabilize pregnant patients in emergencies. Kennedy said Wednesday he didn’t know he had that authority. “You will be enforcing EMTALA laws. And it’s important that you understand their impact and don’t play politics with the patient presenting at the ER based on a position that this administration has taken,” said Sen.Catherine Cortez-Masto, a Democrat from Nevada, at the hearing. 12. Meta agrees to pay $25 million in Trump lawsuit settlement over suspended accounts Meta agrees to pay $25 million in Trump lawsuit settlement over suspended accounts U.S. President Donald Trump and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Cheney Orr | Manuel Orbegozo | Reuters Meta said Wednesday it would pay $25 million to settle a four-year-old lawsuit from President Donald Trump over the social media company’s decision to suspend Trump’s accounts after the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol. Meta, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, filed a notice of the settlement in federal court in San Francisco, where the lawsuit was pending. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone separately confirmed the terms: a $25 million payment from the company, with $22 million going toward a fund for Trump’s presidential library and the balance dedicated to legal fees and other plaintiffs in the case. The settlement does not require Meta to admit wrongdoing, Stone said. The White House declined to comment on the settlement. The settlement was earlier reported by The Wall Street Journal. Meta is at least the second major corporation to pay to settle a Trump lawsuit since he won a second term in the November election. In December, ABC said it would pay $15 million to close out a dispute in which Trump alleged that anchor George Stephanopoulos had defamed him. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has worked aggressively to court Trump since the election. He had a prime seat for Trump’s swearing-in this month and hours later hosted a party in Trump’s honor. Meta has overhauled its content moderation policies to more closely align with the Trump administration, including allowing insults against transgender people and ending its independent fact-checking program in the United States. Also, Zuckerberg promoted a longtime Republican, Joel Kaplan, to be chief of global policy at the company. Trump has previously been critical of Zuckerberg and Meta. In late August, Trump published a book of photographs in which he said Zuckerberg “will spend the rest of his life in prison” if he does “anything ********” to influence the presidential election. At the time, Meta declined to comment on the statement. After Trump won the Nov. 5 election, Zuckerberg wished Trump well and donated to his inaugural fund. Meta, along with nearly every other major tech company, suspended Trump’s social media accounts after the Capitol riot by Trump’s supporters, limiting Trump’s presence online for the final two weeks of his first term. Zuckerberg said in a Jan. 7, 2021, post on Facebook that Trump’s refusal to condemn his supporters who stormed and occupied the Capitol showed that he “intends to use his remaining time in office to undermine the peaceful and lawful transition of power to his elected successor, Joe Biden.” Trump’s accounts remained locked on Facebook and Instagram until February 2023. 14. Man City: Pep Guardiola needs improvement for Champions League play-offs Man City: Pep Guardiola needs improvement for Champions League play-offs Even in victory here, City were too often vulnerable on the counter-attack, with too many spaces in midfield for Club Brugge to exploit, but they dug deep when it mattered and clawed themselves out of the hole they were in. City will somehow have to fashion a vast improvement in the short ******* between this win and the play-offs if they are not to slip out at that stage. This was unthinkable at the start of the season given their pedigree, but it has become very thinkable in recent weeks, especially after the fearful going over they got when losing 4-2 in Paris. Guardiola, relieved as well as pleased, is hoping City will soon be in a stronger position, able to call on new forward Omar Marmoush among others, while history is littered with teams who turned early struggles into Champions League triumph. John Stones made a welcome return, while Guardiola is hoping others such as Ruben Dias and Nathan Ake could be back, along with Oscar Bobb, while Kevin de Bruyne can acquire more minutes and fitness. Guardiola can also call on the memories of beating Bayern and Real on their way to Champions League final victory against Inter Milan in Istanbul in 2023. “It might seem impossible today, but tomorrow the mindset, the vibes will change,” Guardiola said. “We will try against Real or Bayern. We will create problems. These players have something special. We will try to do it.” It was almost the talk of an underdog, rarely Manchester City’s station in recent years. This is where they stand now in this tournament – but when a team of proven quality have a fighting chance, then can defy the odds. City, however, will have to climb several levels if this painful, tortuous Champions League journey is to continue in the last 16. 16. This Colorado town is one of the fastest-growing wealthy suburbs in America This Colorado town is one of the fastest-growing wealthy suburbs in America DENVER (KDVR) — Colorado is home to one of the fastest-growing wealthy suburbs in America, according to a recent study analyzing population change. To determine the fastest-growing American suburbs, personal finance website GoBankingRates used data from the U.S. Census American Community Survey to identify all U.S. suburbs with 25,000-100,000 people and median incomes of $150,000 or higher. Researchers then used U.S. Census data to see each city’s change in population from 2018 to 2023. Study ranks Colorado among worst states for driving, auto theft The top three suburbs on the list are all in Texas, and there were several cities that made the list in California, New York, Massachusetts and Maryland. One Colorado town made the list — Erie, located about 27 miles north of Denver, ranked at No. 4 among the 30 fastest-growing suburbs in America. According to the study, the population in Erie grew 39.02% from 2018-2023, which is more than double the growth seen in most of the following cities on the list. Meanwhile, the No. 3 city on the list saw more than double the growth that Erie saw. 17. Fund manager names 3 emerging markets with great 2025 investment story Fund manager names 3 emerging markets with great 2025 investment story Just one month into the new year and one portfolio manager is already confident that Argentina is “going to be a great story throughout 2025.” “Argentina’s momentum story is fantastic, so it moved from being my top contrarian idea in 2024, to one of my top bets for this year,” Malcolm Dorson, senior portfolio manager at Global X ETFs told CNBC Pro on Jan. 24. Dorson’s conviction in the Latin American country is due in part to a “dramatic” drop in interest rates as well as declines in credit spreads and the cost of capital. The country’s central bank lowered its benchmark interest rate to 32% in December from a record high of 133% in October 2023. Argentina’s annual inflation rate hit 117.8% in 2024, nearly 94 points lower than in 2023 . Argentina’s economy is slated to expand 5% this year and 4.7% in 2026 after two years of recession, data from the World Bank shows. A boost from sectors like agriculture, energy and mining, supported by macroeconomic stability are expected to drive that forecast in economic growth, the World bank said. “Everything looks good for Argentina: the economy is improving, bond yields are coming down and markets are picking up,” Dorson said. He added that the MSCI Argentina Index is trading at 0.9 times book value, implying that the country’s stocks are undervalued. The MSCI Argentina Index — which tracks the performance of large and mid-cap stocks on the country’s market — has gained 156.57% in the last 12 months, according to FactSet data. For comparison, the MSCI Emerging Markets index — which captures large and mid-cap stocks across 24 emerging markets, including Brazil, China and India — gained 13.81% during the same *******. Dorson is particularly interested in the energy sector as the government “unlocks Argentina’s natural resource potential.” His top picks include YPF Sociedad Anonima and Vista Energy which trade on Argentina’s Buenos Aires Exchange and as American Depositary Receipts in the U.S. under the tickers YPF and VIST . Other stocks on Dorson’s radar include Arcos Dorados Holdings , the master franchiser of McDonalds, across Latin America and the Caribbean, and e-commerce platform MercadoLibre , or what he calls “the Amazon of Latin America that everybody loves.” Greece: A fantastic story Besides Argentina, Dorson considers Greece a “fantastic investment story.” “Greece is offering roughly 15% returns a year for the foreseeable future. That is based off 10% earnings growth plus a 67% dividend yield. Put that together and you can sit back and have downside protection,” he said. “With Greece, you have a market that is investment grade credit, the fastest growing GDP in Western Europe, and you’re still trading below book value. Its a boring, good story that’s nice to sit on.” Greece has emerged from a years-long debt crisis and is expected to grow 2.2% this year and 2.5% in 2026, according to projections from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development . Its credit rating was raised to investment grade by S & P and Fitch Ratings in 2023 while Moody’s has upgraded it to a notch below investment grade. The MSCI Greece Index tracking the performance of large and mid-cap stocks on the Greek market is up 17.26% in the last 12 months, according to FactSet data. Dorson is particularly bullish on Greek banks after a clean up in their balance sheets. Their asset quality is very safe “after securitizing their non-performing loan books and selling them to alternative credit managers and hedge funds,” he said, naming Alpha Services & Holdings as his top pick in the theme. He also likes toy retailer Jumbo, given its “potential from a rapid expansion into under penetrated markets in Eastern Europe,” and lottery and gaming company Greek Organisation of Football Prognostics, or OPAP, which he describes as “very profitable and highly patronized by locals.” India: A long-term story In Asia, Dorson is betting on India over the long-term given its ” absolutely fantastic structural setup .” “It is a market that is going to generate returns that I can invest in my children and grandchildren,” he said. His conviction comes even as India’s benchmark Nifty 50 and Sensex are hovering at more than seven-month lows. The portfolio manager sees India as a beneficiary of the strong headwinds between the U.S. and China. He added that India — along with other emerging markets — will also see an easing in monetary policy after “pricing in a stronger U.S. dollar and an incrementally hawkish U.S. Federal Reserve.” The financial sector, namely banks, stand out to him, given that it is a “levered play on the broad Indian market.” “Banks have been smart and prudent in committing a strong capex [capital expenditure] cycle. They’ve been investing in technology and offering more digital banking over the last five years, which is allowing them to cut expenditure, raise revenues and improve asset quality,” Dorson explained. Banks are also “one of the few areas in the Indian market with relatively attractive multiples,” he said, naming HDFC , ICICI Bank and Federal Bank as his top bets in the theme. 19. Game Pass “Doesn’t Hurt Game Companies,” Says Doom Co-Creator Game Pass “Doesn’t Hurt Game Companies,” Says Doom Co-Creator There’s an ongoing debate as to whether Microsoft’s Game Pass hurts or helps sales of titles that are available on the service. But as far as id Software co-founder and Doom co-creator John Romero is concerned, Game Pass is beneficial to the video game industry. Via True Achievements, Romero was recently interviewed by Xbox Expansion Pass, and he was effusive with his praise for Game Pass. “I love it,” said Romero. “I mean, who doesn’t love Game Pass? It’s Netflix for games; who doesn’t want that? It’s great because it’s try before you buy… one thing after another thing. Really the barrier for people to play games is just access to those games. Even free-to-play games, it’s like, knowing that those games exist, and Game Pass is like ‘Here they are!'” Romero went on to add that Game Pass “doesn’t hurt the game companies that made those games,” because players get to experience titles more quickly even if they don’t keep them. It’s unclear if Romero feels this way even about games that launch on Game Pass at the same time that they hit stores. Call of Duty: ****** Ops 6 was seemingly unaffected by its availability on Game Pass, and it was the top-selling game in America for 2024. Conversely, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle only debuted at No. 14 on December 2024’s list of best-selling games. That game may have also been hampered by the fact that its PlayStation 5 port won’t arrive until later this spring. Although Romero didn’t work on Doom: The Dark Ages, that title will be a day-one release on Game Pass when it arrives on May 15. And unlike Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, it will also be hitting PlayStation 5 at the same time as its debut on Xbox Series X|S. 20. ‘I paid because my son can’t deal with crowds’ ‘I paid because my son can’t deal with crowds’ Alix Hattenstone & Kristian Johnson BBC News Handout Sarah says her family holiday in Turkey was an educational experience “My son doesn’t do well in large crowds,” says Sarah, who paid a £320 fine for taking her two children on holiday with her partner during school term time. Sarah’s 10-year-old son, Tyler, has autism and ADHD, and struggles to cope with large groups of tourists during the school holidays. It means Sarah has to choose between avoiding popular destinations, or visiting them in the quieter periods during the school term. Schools and councils say children should not be out of class during term time, but Sarah says the holiday crowds “would be too much” for Tyler. In July 2024, the family from Leicestershire went on holiday to Turkey during the summer term, which meant the children missed six days of school. Sarah says she has even considered home-educating her children, adding: “I feel like I don’t have full responsibility for them, the fact I can’t pull them out of school for a holiday.” Handout Sarah says going on holiday when it is quieter makes a big difference to her son Tyler, who struggles in loud, busy places Leicestershire County Council says it offers advice to parents to “minimise the impact that missed school days can have on a child’s education”. However, Sarah says her family’s trip to Turkey was educational. “The kids got to learn about all sorts of Turkish culture, Turkish food, Turkish currency,” she says. “But that doesn’t mean anything, because I’m neglecting my children because I took them out of school.” For many families, cost benefits also play a huge part in the decision to take holidays during term time, with trips often costing thousands more during the school holidays. A record 356,181 school holiday fines were issued in England during the 2022-2023 academic year, three times as many as when the government started recording figures in 2016-17. Figures due to be published on Thursday will tell us if the upward trend is continuing. How much do you get fined for taking a child out of school for a holiday? In August 2024, the Department for Education (DfE) introduced a new national framework to bring councils more in line with each other. However, it says it is the local authority’s responsibility to decide when to issue fines to parents. The government says, in most cases, schools and local authorities will try to provide support to help improve a child’s attendance – but if this is ineffective or the absence is for an unauthorised term-time holiday, parents may face a fine. According to DfE guidelines issued in August 2024: Schools must consider fines if a child misses five or more days unauthorised Fines rose from £60 to £80 if paid within 21 days, or £160 if paid within 28 daysIf a parent gets a second fine for the same child in three years, it costs £160 immediatelyFor a third unauthorised absence, other action like prosecution is considered. A court appearance could result in a fine of up to £2,500. The DfE says money from fines goes to the local authority. Doncaster Council issued the highest number of fines per 1,000 pupils of any local authority in England in 2022-2023, with 149. Katy Taylor-Clarke, principal at The Laurel Academy in Mexborough, near Doncaster, says “it’s a big issue”. BBC / Kristian Johnson While Katy Taylor-Clarke has “some sympathy” with parents, she says children should not be going on holiday during the school term The school employs two attendance officers who spend all day phoning and visiting the parents of children who do not show up in the morning. In a bid to help parents try to find cheaper holidays, schools across Doncaster have moved their Easter holidays a week earlier this year. “Some of the frustration lies with the travel companies who inflate the prices,” says Miss Taylor-Clarke. “But ultimately, children need to be in school. “As a general rule of thumb, we won’t authorise a term-time holiday. We have to be consistent, because it’s not fair if we fine some parents and not others.” Paul Whiteman, general secretary at the National Association of Head Teachers, says fines are a “crude tool, and do not address more complex underlying causes of absence”. To improve attendance, he says there needs to be more support for children with special educational needs, as well as more investment in community services, mental health support and social care. School leaders are also in a difficult position, he says, because there are no national guidelines on what the “exceptional circumstances” are in which schools can give pupils time off. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said “we need a national effort to tackle the epidemic of school absence”, adding fines have a “vital place in our system, so everyone is held accountable” for ensuring children are in school. “When children miss school unnecessarily, all children suffer, as teachers’ attention is diverted to helping them catch back up, and we will not apologise for ensuring every child is in school accessing high and rising standards so they can achieve and thrive,” she said. 24. Apple Just Changed a Key Setting On Your iPhone. Here’s Why You Should Change It Back Apple Just Changed a Key Setting On Your iPhone. Here’s Why You Should Change It Back iOS 18.3 is out now. iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.3 Apple rolled out iOS 18.3 this week, delivering several key new Apple Intelligence features to all compatible iPhones. Chief among them are new Visual Intelligence features, which use Apple’s AI to tell you about the world around you. For example, if you have an iPhone 16, you can use its camera and Camera Control button to identify specific plants, animals, and insects. You can also use the same method for event flyers and posters, which will automatically add those events to your iPhone’s Calendar app. (Note: only iPhone 16 models — not the iPhone 15 Pro/Max — support Visual Intelligence features, as the iPhone needs to have the new Camera Control button.) iOS 18.3 is out now and turns on Apple Intelligence by default. – Credit: Photo by Tucker Bowe for Gear Patrol A new default setting But iOS 18.3 also changed an iPhone setting. In the past, iPhone 16 and iPhone 15 Pro/Max owners have had to manually turn on Apple Intelligence if they wanted to access those features. But with iOS 18.3, it turns Apple Intelligence on by default. This means that if you have one of the newest iPhones (or last year’s Pros) and you download the latest software, 7GB of data — the amount needed to support all Apple Intelligence’s various features — will eat into your iPhone’s storage. Additionally, Apple Intelligence will take up 7GB of storage on any device that it’s turned on for, such as a compatible iPad (with A17 Pro or M1 chips and later) or Mac (M1 chip or later). So, if you have one of those devices and don’t use any Apple Intelligence features, there’s a real case for turning it off. Admittedly, if you have one of the newest iPhones, you’re probably not worried about storage (at least, not just yet). But it’s a little annoying — especially if you don’t use any Apple Intelligence features (and there’s a good chance you’re not). iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.3 How to turn off Apple Intelligence The good news is that you can quickly and easily turn off Apple Intelligence and take back the 7GB of storage that it eats. Here’s how: Open the Settings app on your iPhone. Scroll down and select Apple Intelligence & Siri. Toggle off Apple Intelligence. Confirm “Turn Off Apple Intelligence” when prompted. With Apple Intelligence turned off, it disables all Apple Intelligence features, including its advanced writing and photo editing tools, Notification Summaries, and Type to Siri. Reminder: Only the newest iPhones, specifically all iPhone 16 models and the iPhone 15 Pro/Max support Apple Intelligence. 25. Gemini AI can see and talk to you about what’s on your screen – which could be more helpful than it sounds Gemini AI can see and talk to you about what’s on your screen – which could be more helpful than it sounds Google Gemini is releasing a feature for Pixel 9 that lets it discuss what’s on a screen in real-time Gemini Live can discuss images, files, and YouTube videos The feature makes Gemini Live more aware of the context of discussions Google is giving its Gemini AI assistant a new perspective, your view of what’s on a smartphone screen. Specifically, the Pixel 9 series of devices, where Gemini Live is now able to “Talk Live about this” and have a real-time chat about images, files, and YouTube videos as you see them, as first spotted by 9to5Google. It’s ideal if you’re keen to ask about a cooking tutorial mid-recipe or demand an explanation about a meme you’re not hip enough to understand. Gemini Live’s role until now has been much like any standard AI voice assistant, powered by the more conversational models in the mold of ChatGPT. But, now, it can peep at specific content on your screen and add that to its discussions. Pixel 9 owners can access the feature by launching the floating Gemini overlay, where a suggestion will appear suggesting the AI “Talk Live about video” on YouTube, “Talk Live about PDF” in Files by Google, and “Talk Live about this” for images on the screen. It gives Gemini context without you having to explain what’s there. That’s a lot faster than having to manually upload an image from your gallery. Once you activate the feature, Gemini Live opens up with a preview of whatever’s on the screen you might want to discuss. The AI might offer destination ideas based on a YouTube travel video, summarize a contract PDF, or explain the allegory of a piece of Rennaisance art you’re examining on your phone. If you find it all a tad intrusive, you can stop Gemini Live from automatically ogling what you’re looking at. If you don’t have a Pixel 9, don’t worry. Google has said it will release the feature for Samsung Galaxy S24 and S25 smartphones soon, followed by other Android devices. Gemini alive The feature fits neatly into Google’s Gemini strategy. In case you haven’t noticed, Google dreams of cementing Gemini’s place at the center of people’s lives, especially on mobile devices, as evidenced by its ongoing integration with Android. And this feature won’t be the end of Gemini Live’s upgrades. Google is gearing up for Project Astra, a still evolving toolkit that should let users share their screen and stream video in real-time while conversing with Gemini Live. Google is leaning hard into real-time, in-context assistance. Rather than just generating responses based on abstract queries, Gemini Live wants to be part of the moment, reacting to whatever’s on your screen with (hopefully) useful insights. To keep ahead of Apple’s plans for Apple Intelligence and whatever OpenAI and Microsoft plan, Google wants Gemini to be as omnipresent as possible.
